The amount of horrible comic book movies is too many to count. If there is one thing they have in common it is the cheesy, typical comic book lines and characters. There are some movies which can pull it off but others fall to the waste side.

Nonetheless, I enjoy a healthy spoonful of cheese every now and then as long as it is accompanied by another entertaining aspect. What is that aspect? That depends on the movie! So let’s get on with it.

Ghost Rider
Why it’s seen as horrible: The amount of cheesy lines is incredible. Once you add in the typical comic book villains with no characteristics other than anger you have one horrible, horrible film.

Why I like it: I’m a huge Nicholas Cage fan. Yes, I said it. Add in the fairly decent computer graphics, the awesome bike, and the hot girlfriend and you have a film I’ll enjoy.

Batman & Robin
Why it’s seen as horrible: The biggest complaint about this Batman is always the bat nipples. For me, that doesn’t matter much. Hey, it gives some characteristics to the suit! The fight scenes thrown together in an hour, cheesy lines, and a whiny Robin are the the kickers.

Why I like it: The writers actually did a fairly good job putting Mr. Freeze’s character together. Yes, he isn’t The Joker from the Dark Knight, but his character is still built up enough for the viewers to see he isn’t all evil. Add in The Arnold playing the role and you have a great villain. Hey, I actually like Arnold’s one liners.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Why it’s seen as horrible: Almost every critique bashed LoEG for it’s plot and atmosphere being different from comic books. It also didn’t help that the characters lack depth.

Why I like it: Sean Connery does an excellent job (as usual). Add in Tom Sawyer and a few excellent fight scenes and you have a movie I’ll watch.

Catwoman
Why it’s seen as horrible: This movie lacks character depth and supporting actors like there is no tomorrow.

Why I like it: Halle Berry in a tight suit, with a whip, and acting like a cat. Should there be another reason?

Tank Girl
Why it’s seen as horrible: Too many film tricks: some scenes are completely animated, others contain still graphics, and the script writing isn’t quite up to par.

Why I like it: It is so far out there that it is worth watching several times. Young aggressive females out to kick ass; what is so wrong with that? The dialogue (although it is limited) is also quite hilarious.

Swamp Thing
Why it’s seen as horrible: It is completely different than other Wes Craven horror flicks. Add in a poor script, low budget, and un-scary events with a typical ending and you have a good chance of being labeled as a horrible film.

Why I like it: Since I’m not particularly a Wes Craven fan (this film is much tamer than his usual movies) I’m not bothered by its lack of usual Cravenesc behaviors. The movie includes great photography (shot in many great locations, including real swamps) and a 50’s style horror film feel with horrible makeup/costumes. The poor script allows this film to be put into the humor genre at the local rental store and there is definitely nothing wrong with that. Who doesn’t like a good laugh every now and then?

Judge Dredd
Why it’s seen as horrible: The main argument comic book lovers have against this film is Dredd removes his helmet (he never does in the comic). Everyone else complains about Rob Schneider.

Why I like it: Sly Stallone was one of the best action heroes of the 80s and early 90s. This movie came out after his prime but it is still typical Sly. There is just something about his looks and badassness which makes his acting worth standing, no matter how horrible the rest of the film may be. Nonetheless, this film does offer enough humor (yes, Schneider does have a few good moments) and upbeat pace to keep the popcorn flowing and the eyes-a-watching.

A few weeks ago I came across an open source PC game similar to Civilization I and II (I’m a hardcore fan of the series, but left my copies at my parents house on accident). I was heavenly surprised at how in-depth the game is and holds up so well as a replacement for Civilization.

The game is titled FreeCiv. The first version was released on January 5, 1996. It is highly customizable and allows for both multiplier human and AI opponents. Since the game is based off both Civ I and II, players are able to choose from three different rulesets: Civ I, Civ II, and default–the most commonly used settings amongst the FreeCiv crowd. Of course, all rulesets are customizable.

Gameplay is extremely similar to the Civilization series. Actually, the only differences are the ones you choose. Up to 30 players may join in and teams may comprise of as many members as you wish.

After installation, you are given the choice of starting a new game or starting a scenario (you may also connect to other games). Starting a new game is essentially a quick start while starting a scenario allows you more customization.

Within the scenario choice lies a tutorial. It is quick and extremely useful for beginners. If you wish just to start on your own without the tutorials help, you are given the choice of choosing a map (more maps are available on the FreeCiv wiki page). After, you are brought to the player setup and rules page. Here, you decide which ruleset, amount of players, nations, and what teams (if any) should be used. Now we are ready to play!

Features:

Civilization like game play

Good UI

Decent graphics

30 nations

100+ leaders

Team play

Multiplier capability

5 AI skill levels

50 playable units

One problem the game has is crashing. Luckily, updates are continually improving the stability of FreeCiv; however, problems still exist–the longer a game lasts and the more players the more likely the game crashes.

As time goes on, FreeCiv continues to improve and adapt more ideas. Features are always coming and the gameplay is only to get better.

FreeCiv is a great, free, multiplier, and customizable version of Civilization. I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys turn-based games.

Since I live in an apartment building, I am unable to receive direct electricity from wind mills or solar panels (I can and do buy some electricity from those sources through my electric company but the percent is quite small). Thus, I instead compensate by doing the three R’s as much as possible.

Toilet paper is probably one of the easiest ways to create waste, especially since we are unable to recycle what we use-there usually aren’t bidets in apartments in the United States. Luckily, there is an option we can take to at least minimize the impact we have. What option you ask? Using toilet paper that has already been recycled, my good sir.

Like many other shoppers, when I first saw recycled toilet paper being sold, I clinched my cheeks and said ‘ouch’. Nonetheless, after a few cloggings of our toilet by our previous wiping pleasure I along with a little persuasion of my girlfriend decided to pick up a bag of Marcel recycled toilet paper on our next shopping trip.

You are probably wondering whether or not my anus bled after its first usage. Well, I am happy to tell you it did not and the toilet paper is actually quite soft. My only complaint about the paper is that it isn’t thick enough.

The toilet paper is almost transparent with the feel of a fabric softener sheet. If you have no clue what that feels like, after doing a load of laundry go to the bathroom and wipe the sheet across your butt. Do you like that? Well, I do. If that makes me weird then so be it. I am a little weird. Hey, I’m a nerd. A nerd who likes the feel of fabric softeners wiped across his ass.

File sharing. This is accepted by both the nerd and youth community. For nerds, file sharing isn’t just about sharing music and movies but also sharing open source software quickly and easily by the use of torrents. Nonetheless, illegal file sharing does happen and it is accepted by many throughout the respective communities.

Because of illegal file sharing, torrents are frowned upon by the general public. Torrent sites have been shut down, sued, and even raided by the FBI. Even with this happening, the sites continue to strive and will not disappear overnight.

Should file sharing be illegal?

No. Definitely not. Sharing files is the Internet. Whether you are sharing music, software, or even text you are sharing files. Whenever you visit a website, a file is downloaded onto your computer. Every time you chat on an instant messenger, text is being transferred across computers. Sharing files shouldn’t be illegal and doing so will push the country back into the 1980s in terms of telecommunication.

Should sharing copyrighted material be illegal?
In my opinion, yes. Artists deserve to get paid as do producers. The claim that buying a CD ‘doesn’t help the artist’ is bogus. The artist does get paid and in some instances as much as 75% of the total retail price. Selling t-shirts and concert tickets are only a small percentage of the overall cash flow an artist receives. If it weren’t for CD sales, many artists wouldn’t be able to support themselves. Remember, the household names are the top 1% in the industry. Smaller bands do not fill concert halls, sell t-shirts in convenient stores, or have posters of themselves plastered around Hot Topic.

The other claim: ‘I wouldn’t have bought it anyway’ is the most retarded thing someone can say regarding illegal downloads. Really? So you went through the time to search for the torrent, downloading it, and listening to it, yet you had no intention to ever buy it? Why the hell did you bother downloading it then? Turn on a radio if you wish to find music you like. There is even a pretty kick ass online radio station you can customize to your listening style.

Here’s another ridiculous claim: ‘It isn’t stealing because they still have the music. It is just duplicating’. Ah, I see. So the artist shouldn’t be paid because he creates art. I guess since cars are ‘duplicated’ it is OK to take one as well. Regardless of what you are thinking, it is the same. Music online is duplicated by using bandwidth, RAM, CPU, and harddrive space. Cars are duplicated by using metal, glass, and rubber. I guess since you can’t actually see the duplication process it is OK. It is kind of like circumcision. It is alright as long as you don’t watch it happen.

As for movies, they are expensive to create. If every person decided to download the movie illegally instead of going to theaters then the movie wouldn’t have been created in the first place. Yes, most films aren’t recorded for home viewing. Actually, the ratio used in theaters is 20% wider. Nonetheless, it happens. And no, the Watchmen isn’t an argument against illegal downloads. You nor I have any clue how many people would have went to the theater if it wasn’t leaked.

If you want to watch movies online, go to YouTube. Because the crap that people put on there is exactly what you would be reduced to watching if it weren’t for Hollywood.

I feel the same way about books, photographs, newspapers, logos, and anything else which can be stolen. Writers are paid to write. Photographers are paid to photograph and designers are paid to design. Once you take the income from them, they can no longer do their job 8-hours a day. Many of the greatest stories over the past hundred years wouldn’t have been written and many of the wonderful photographs wouldn’t have been taken.

And no, the RIAA and MPAA are not ’stealing from the poor’ when they sue. The poor could care less what new song just became #1 on the charts or what movie just hit theaters. They are too busy worrying about how to pay their next water bill and how to put food on the table (if they even have one).

We have become too acclimated to doing what is easy instead of doing what is right. Drive the speed limit? No! I have to get to my destination quicker. Recycle old newspapers? No! I don’t have time. Cook a meal at home? No! I will just pick something up.

America, we are too lazy for our own good. We care too much about ourselves and not enough about our neighbors and those who created our culture. Hollywood is as American as you can get and has, along with music, spread our culture to every corner of the Earth. And how do we repay them? By stealing their property.

What are your views on file sharing?

I’ve been asked how to edit the CSS file for the Featured Posts plugin in order to change the look and feel. Since I believe WordPress plugins should be simple enough for non-techies to understand, I’ll go ahead and outline exactly what each selector does and how you can change what the plugin looks like.

First, let’s look at what the Featured Posts plugin outputs as HTML when you enable it:

<div class="featuredposts"><img src="http://example.org/img.jpg" class="featuredimg" alt="" width="233" height="175" /><h2><a href="http://example.org/?p=1" rel="bookmark" title="Hello world!">Hello world!</a></h2>This is where the excerpt or custom description appears.<br /><br /><a href="http://example.org/?p=1" rel="bookmark" title="Hello world!">Read the story »</a></div>

This probably looks confusing to someone who doesn’t have much experience with HTML. But don’t worry! I’ll go through what is happening.

<div class="featuredposts">
– This is just saying for the browser to add a layer with the class name “featuredposts”. Everything coming after this and before the final
</div>
is located inside the layer. If you wish to edit any of the layers properties, you need to change the
div.featuredposts
selector inside the featured-posts.css file.

What you can change:

What’s entered as default:

margin
– this is the whitespace between the layer and the ones next to it.

padding
– this is the whitespace inside the layer. How much room should be between the content and the border of the layer?

width
– how wide should the layer be?

height
– how tall should the layer be?

font-size
– what size of text should be used for all content inside the layer?

background
– want a different color or want to add an image as the background?

color
– this is the texts color.

Common properties you may add:

line-height
– the distance between each line.

border
– what do you want the border to look like?

position
– make the position absolute and edit a few other properties to force the layer to display anywhere on the page, regardless of where it is on the HTML file.

Actually, you can change just about anything. If you have an idea, there is probably a way to do it. There are many CSS properties you can add, these are just the most common.

<img src="http://example.org/img.jpg" class="featuredimg" alt="" width="233" height="175" />
– this is what displays the image (if you wish to have one displayed). As you can see, it has a class titled “featuredimg” which is used as a CSS selector.
alt=""
is the default text someone sees when the image does not display in their browser (in the future this will probably be changed to display the title of the post instead of being blank).
width="233"
is the width of the image. This is used for two reasons: 1) some versions of HTML require it to be used. 2) it helps the plugin resize the image if you set a width within the settings page which isn’t equal to the actual image size or the thumbnail size you specified in your WordPress settings.
height="175"
is the same as width, but for the height (obviously).

You can change how the image is displayed by editing
img.featuredimg
.

What you can change:

What’s entered as default:

float
– this is the direction of where the image will be placed. left means the image will display on the left side of the layer.

margin
– this is the distance from the image to the text and border.

Common properties you may add:

padding
– you may feel more comfortable using padding instead of margin.

border
– some images look better with a border.

background
– by using background you can add a drop shadow easily.

<h2><a href="http://example.org/?p=1" rel="bookmark" title="Hello world!">Hello world!</a></h2>
– this actually contains two different CSS selectors inside the CSS file.

The header (title of the post) is controlled by
div.featuredposts h2

What you can change:

What’s entered as default:

margin-top
– this is the distance between the border of the layer and the title.

font-size
– the size the font will be displayed in.

Common properties you may add:

margin
– you may want to add a margin for the sides or bottom. In that case, you may wish to delete the margin-top property.

padding
– you may feel more comfortable using the padding property instead of margin. Or, you may want both depending on your purpose.

font-family
– you may want the title to display as a different font than the other h2s on your page.

font-weight
– you can make the font bold or unbold it.

text-decoration
– you can italicize or underline the text.

border
– place a border on one sides, two sides, three sides, or all four.

background
– some people like placing icons by the title or changing the background color.

How the title link is displayed is controlled by
div.featuredposts h2>a

What you can change:

What’s entered as default:

color
– change the color the title is displayed in.

Common properties you may add:

text-decoration
– italicize or underline the text.

border
– border-bottom is becoming more popular as a replacement for underline because it is more customizable.

padding
– placing a padding along with a border-bottom allows for more customization.

background
– you can even add a background as an alternative to the underline or border.

That’s it! That’s all the selectors added within the CSS file. As you can see, you can do pretty much anything you wish with a little knowledge of CSS.

Wait! There is a few things I want to add.

Even though this is all the default selectors, you can add even more. A common selector added is
div.featuredposts h2>a:hover
. This will change how the title link is displayed when your mouse pointer ‘hovers’ over it. The most common change is taking away or adding an underline, but with enough imagination you can pull something incredible off.

This article is already over a thousand words, so I’m not going to go into details on what values each property can have. But, I will point you to a nice tutorial site to help you out: w3schools.

You’ve probably seen the label ‘Dolphin-safe’ on tinned tuna in your local grocery store. It sounds great. It gives our imagination thoughts of dolphins swimming freely through the ocean without harm, fisherman smiling as they bring in large nets of tuna, and allows us to think we are being environmentally friendly.

What isn’t mentioned on the can, is millions of other species are being caught as a replacement.

Firstly, lets set this straight. There are many types of tuna. The most commonly fished types are:

Blue-fin tuna – has been recommended against eating since the southern blue-fin is endangered and the northern blue-fin is close to being endangered. This tuna is native to the Atlantic ocean, but cultivated off the coast of Japan and is now commonly used in sushi.

Yellow-fin tuna – the second most commercially caught tuna, but is listed as endangered especially in the Mediterranean. The EU has placed fishing quotas on the fish and if they aren’t kept, the fish may go extinct in as little as 15-years. This fish is mostly caught off the west coast of the United States and is seen as over-fished. This tuna is the most common to swim with dolphins and is sold both as frozen and in canned form.

Skipjack tuna – the most commonly caught tuna (although it isn’t really a tuna). It is often canned with the label ‘light meat’ in North America. This fish swims in large schools but don’t associate with dolphins. However, they are an important diet for many sharks and other large fish. This makes it easy for non-Skipjack (including turtles and other juvenile tuna) to be caught in purse seine nets.

Blackfin tuna – the smallest tuna species. This fish is short lived and fast growing. Unlike many other tunas, Blackfin are found in the warmer parts of the Atlantic ocean from Cape Cod to Brazil. This fish is commercially caught mostly in the Caribbean but is sport fished in other areas. Blackfin is generally of excellent quality and is sold fresh, canned, and frozen. Blackfin are not listed as endangered or threatened.

Bigeye tuna – fished commercially worldwide but are seen as threatened. They are over-fished due to juvenile Bigeyes association with logs and other floating objects making them especially susceptible to purse seine fishing. Bigeye also mature at a later age than other tunas.

Albacore tuna – do not swim in tight schools so are seen as a tougher catch. The stocks are at record highs in the north and south Pacific but are endangered in the north and south Atlantic. Alabcore do not swim with dolphins.

Almost all tuna are caught using purse seine nets and FAD. These devices are used to attract fish in the area of the net (along with their predators and swimming companions). Over 1 million fish and 100,000 by-catch (mostly sharks, dolphins, larger fish, whales, and turtles) are caught using FAD. Due to this practice, the bycatch has resulted in the threatening and near extinction of many different ocean species.

Even with this practice, the US Consumers Union has noted that there is no guarantee any “Dolphin-safe” tunas are in fact dolphin-safe because there is no universal or independent verification. Sadly, most tinned tuna does not educate consumers on the fishing methods used nor the type of tuna.

Nonetheless, there is still hope for tuna and environment lovers.

The U.S. North and South Pacific albacore pole & line and troll fisheries are seen as the only sustainable tuna fisheries in the world by the Marine Stewardship Council. Albacore is seen as the best choice for consumers since the industry is sustainable, eco-friendly (since there is little per catch, it is easy for the fisherman to spot non-Albacores and throw them back.

Now, the only problem is finding a place where Albacore is sold.

It should be noted that Albacore are listed as endangered in some parts of the world, specifically India. If you are in one of those areas, finding another tuna solution may be more difficult.

Over the past year, Entrecard, its founders, and its moderators have been involved in some serious accusations. These accusations range from EC being a Nazi regime to Graham being an Asian woman. The accusations have hurt Entrecard’s credibility and turned many against the system.

Although these accusations may seem silly to you, there are some people who take them extremely serious and continue to spread the word. But, this post isn’t about the past. I have it on good authority that something much weirder and more perverse is happening in front of our very own eyes.

So what is it? An anonymous source within Entrecard’s moderator team has told me a fellow moderator has in fact married a sheep. This moderator has been a member of Entrecard for over 6-months and is extremely well liked within the community.

I admit, when I first heard this rumor I was shocked. I was in disbelief of this actually occurring inside Entrecard. But, the moderator has shown me visual evidence of this horrid act.

The weirdness doesn’t stop there. Graham Langdon, founder of Entrecard, was also seen several weeks ago visiting Google the first day they hired goats to mow their lawn. Coincidence? Let’s hope so.

These acts cannot be tolerated. I suggest we join forces to stop these acts from hurting the sanctity of married!

Therefor, I hereby announce the creation of the Entrecard group “no sheep, no goat, no marriage”.

Here are a few images to help us get the word spread!

A few weeks ago, I posted an article about 10 movies nerds love and reference. The list included many science fiction films along with a couple fantasies. But, what the film didn’t include was many nerds.

Nerds saw a huge jump in movie roles after the popularity of the term increased when put on display in Happy Days in the mid-70s. Ever since, nerds have had a place in Hollywood.

Here is a list of my favorite movies about nerds (ranked according to their IMDB rating).

Weird Science (1985)
Although this film is ranked barely above average (6.3) by IMDB, it has its place in best nerd films for no other reason than the movie contains every nerds dream–the ability to create a gorgeous women through programming.

Once you add in that this film is freaking hilarious and the fact Wyatt Donnelly was a professor at ASU when I attended there then there is no other reason to not add Weird Science into the list of top movies about nerds.

Revenge of the Nerds (1984)
When I was younger, this film was on television (yes, edited) almost every single day. So even at an extremely young age I was exposed to the nerds ability to defeat the jocks.

Now that I am older and have seen the unedited version, I enjoy the film that much more. Does that make me a pervert? No, because I already know I am one. Anyway, that isn’t the reason I enjoy it more. It is because many parts of the film were deleted for time constraints and words were censored.

Lucas (1986)
A true nerd who is picked on endlessly encounters a blessing as an attractive girl moves in down the street and attends his school. She’s a bit older and down to earth. The nerd loves her. As the two become best friends the nerd falls for her even more. She of course, only likes him as a friend. She (who would have guessed) falls for the football star. She falls for the football star. Luckily, the nerd has his own admirer who is just as down to earth.

The Nutty Professor (1963)
Yes, the Jerry Lewis original. As Lewis plays an even more believable nerd than Eddie Murphy, he sets out to become a handsome, popular man. Like Murphy’s version, Lewis is picked on constantly by almost everyone who knows him. He is even embarrassed in front of his class (which contains the beautiful Stella) by the football coach. Once he drinks his potion, he becomes a popular, handsome, and socially capable dude. Of course, the potion wears off quickly and hilarity ensues.

Real Genius (1985)
A nerd (Gabriel Jarret) is the youngest student to ever be accepted into a university for geniuses. He partners up with his roommate to develop a high-powered laser, only to have it taken by their teacher once it’s complete. The laser was being created unknowingly to finish a military contract to kill humans by laser from space. But that isn’t really the story.

The story is the roommate, played by Val Kilmer, is a mellowed out dude who use to be exactly like the young genius. Eventually, Kilmer teaches him how to mellow out and enjoy college. Like all nerd films, the nerd must fall in love, and he does.

War Games (1983)
A young computer nerd accidentally connects into a nuclear weapons facility and launches a game between America and Russia. Neither side realizes that it is just a game, until when it isn’t. The countdown to WWIII begins, but the nerd and his female companion save the day.

At the beginning of the personal computer age, War Games rose many peoples awareness for both the danger and hope the computer age will bring. It is definitely a nerd classic.

Carrie (1976)
This film is unlike the others mentioned. It is a Stephen King classic about a nerd who is the child of a Christian fanatic. She is so sheltered by her mother that she doesn’t even know what is happening to her when she has her first period. She of course, contains the same powers as her father. She learns more about her powers only to have them come to great use at the end.

Pi (1998)
A math nerd who has terrible headaches is unsocial and obsessive with patterns. He is a number theorist who is attempting to find a predictable pattern within the stock market. He is lonely and his only contact is a math professor.

The math nerd works on his calculations within a super-computer, only to have it crash and spit out a 216-digit number. He gets the computer to work again, but it spits out the same number while crashing. Once the computer stops printing, he starts writing it down only to recognize it. As the movie goes on, the nerd’s headaches increase, he’s kidnapped, and thugs use the number to crash the stock market.

Featured Posts 0.2 has just been released! There is a ton new features, but it is still the simple, small, and highly customizable plugin it was before. Like all WP plugins, it is easy to install and you can get it up and running in just a few minutes. Click through to see a screenshot and more information.

Version 0.2.1 is the newest version.

Today, WordPress accepted “Featured Posts” into their plugin directory allowing for me to offer automatic updates within WordPress. So even if you do have 0.2 downloaded, please head over to the plugin directory and download Featured Posts.

You’ve probably seen websites with featured posts or breaking news at the top and wondered how to do it. Well now you can easily add it to the front page of your WordPress blog or any category.

Why might you want to do it?
Sometimes you want your visitors to see a post but want to continue adding new content at the same time. For example, you are running a contest and want your visitors to see it first thing, but you want to continue writing about your regular subject. A great way to help your visitors see it is to use featured posts. You just type in the id of your post within the plugin options page and all your regular articles will be displayed normally.

How easy is it to install?
Extremely easy! Just download the file, upload it to your directory and head to the options page. There you enter the post ID you wish to be displayed and whatever image you wish to be shown.

When installing, DO NOT PLACE featuredposts() INSIDE THE LOOP! Read about the_loop here.

The image is taken directly from the post’s gallery.

Full instructions on how to install Featured Posts is located within the readme.txt file.

Wonder what it looks like on your frontpage:

Can I change how it looks?
You can also easily change the look and feel of the plugin within the separate CSS file so you don’t have to dig through the plugin to find it. This can be extremely useful if your site is using obscure percentages or you want to change the size of the featured posts box.

You can read up on how to change the looks more specifically here.

Do I have to show an image?
No, but it does look better with one. To not show an image just unselect “display image” within the plugin settings page. After doing so you may need to change the CSS though, otherwise the featured posts plugin will probably leave whitespace underneath.

How do I show the plugin on my homepage only?
<?php if (is_home()) { if(function_exists(’featuredposts’)) featuredposts(); } ?>

How do I show the plugin on a specific category?
<?php if (is_category(’5′)) { if(function_exists(’featuredposts’)) featuredposts(); } ?>

Want to try Featured Posts?
Check Featured Posts out at the official WordPress directory

Known bugs:
Currently, if a post does not have an image and the ‘display image’ box is ticked then Featured Posts will not display. Simply untick the box and save. This will be fixed in the next update.

The text within the settings page on what PHP code to use is incorrect (it is missing parenthesis). The readme.txt file has the correct usage. It is:

if (function_exists(’featuredposts’)) { featuredposts(); }

Past versions:
0.1

Change log
0.2 to 0.2.1:

Now listed as compatible with Wordpress 2.8

Deleted rest of $ol_flash

Despite common belief, the reason most plants die is over-watering. This occurrence includes gardens, yards, and even household plants. In a previous article, we discussed how to grow veggies in an apartment. One commenter, Cromely, suggested checking the plants before watering to make sure they need it.

Well, lets let Cromely speak for himself:

Great tips. I would suggest being careful about daily watering, however. Before watering, always make sure the plants need it. You can probably find a cheap water meter at discount stores and gardening centers.

If plants get too much water, their roots will have trouble getting the appropriate nutrients and oxygen from from the soil. In containers, it can sometimes be challenging to keep plants from suffering from “wet feet.”

Cromely offers a great solution to the problem. An example of a water meter for plants (also known as a soil moisture meter) is a Thirsty Light.

Here’s how Thirsty Light works: just stick it in the soil. Once the soil becomes too dry, the LED lights start blinking. Then when you water the plant, it stops.

You can find the Thirsty Light on Amazon for just $9.95. Here’s what it looks like:

An (even better, IMO) alternative to the Thirsty Light is the Plant Watering Bulb. Plant Watering Bulb’s work essentially the exact same way but instead of alerting you when the plant needs water, they simply use the water held inside the bulb.

This can either be a plus or a minus. No matter what, you will still have to water the plant the same amount. The difference is that instead of watering the plant, you will be filling up the bulb. So you will still need to continually check the bulb to make sure it contains water.

You can probably find a similar product in your local gardening center. These have become quite popular as of late and when bought in bulk you can save quite a bit of cash.

Here’s what the Plant Watering Bulb looks like:

No matter what you chose though, be sure to keep the soil moist, just don’t over-water.
