With the just-launched Nivea x Bridgerton Lip Balm limited-edition collection, has Nivea made drugstore stick lip balm a little bit… sexier? Given the Bridgerton Netflix series’ steamy reputation, the new alliance surely can’t hurt. *grin*

I don’t currently subscribe to that streaming service, but I can at least tell you that season 4 of the Shonda Rhimes/ Netflix adaptation of the Julia Quinn Bridgerton books series has already begun. The first four episodes — part one — debuted on January 29th; the remaining four will drop on February 26th. I’ve included the Bridgerton season 4 trailers for part one and part two at the end of this post.

NIVEA BRIDGERTON LIP BALM PACKAGING

The Nivea x Bridgerton Lip Care collection features four balms, each with a charming, embellished cap, plus display packaging associated with one of the four Bridgerton seasons thus far.

Although this line-up is limited-edition, each lip balm is an existing Nivea formula. Of the four, three are tinted; one of those is also shimmery. Details in the section below.

NIVEA BRIDGERTON LIP BALM SCENTS & FINISHES

This collection launched on January 29th. Here are the details in reverse order of series seasons.

Nivea Bridgerton Lip Balm in Vanilla Biscuit ($4.99 CAD via amazon.ca) is associated with Bridgerton season 4, Benedict and Sophie’s story. Vanilla Biscuit is a tint-free blend of sunflower and castor oils, beeswax and sunflower seed wax, and shea butter. The formula also contains Vitamins C and E. According to Nivea, it’s the Vanilla Buttercream Lip Care formula (available in the US), dressed in a Regency-romance-inspired cap.

Nivea Bridgerton Lip Balm in Peach Tea ($4.90 CAD + via amazon.com*) is a nod to Bridgerton season 3, Colin and Penelope’s story. Unfortunately, the Peach Tea option does not appear to be available in Canada except via the US amazon.com site. Like the balm above, it’s made with sunflower and castor seed oils as well as Vitamins C and E. There’s no beeswax, but it does have rapeseed oil, plus a peach tint and flavour. It’s in fact the Peach Lip Care formula already available in the US. (The regular Nivea Peach Shine lip balm is on amazon.ca as well, but via a third-party seller for a whopping $15+ CAD.)

Nivea Bridgerton Lip Balm in Blackberry Pie ($4.99 CAD via amazon.ca) spotlights Bridgerton season 2, about Anthony and Kate. The formula is much like Peach Tea’s, only with a gorgeous blackberry-inspired tint. Per Nivea, it’s also known as the Nivea Blackberry Lip Care regularly available in the US. (Nivea Blackberry Shine is available on amazon.ca via third-party seller and shipped by Amazon. But do you want to spend $10+ CAD to get one with an everyday Nivea cap?)

Nivea Bridgerton Lip Balm in Rose Meringue ($4.99 CAD via amazon.ca) celebrates Daphne and Simon’s story. The first season of Bridgerton was a massive hit when it debuted in December of 2020. More than that, its diverse casting crushed period-drama convention. (Thank you Shonda Rhimes.) As for this Rose Meringue balm, it’s a subtle sweet pink with a mica-and-pearl shimmer. Out of costume, it’s the Nivea Pearly Shine or Pearly Pink Shimmer formula.

Out of all of these Nivea lip balm formulas and finishes, I actually have grabby-hands for Blackberry Pie. That shade looks so good. I love a peach flavour, too, but that it’s not easily available in Canada seems tricky. I’m curious about Rose Meringue, although I prefer a more vivid pink. As for Vanilla Biscuit, I’d rather have an actual vanilla biscuit. True story: I can’t handle a vanilla scent unless it’s in something I’m about to eat! 😂

The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution is finally available for purchase in Canada, eight years after launching in the USA. I depend on occasional chemical peels to keep my skin smooth, and this one is super affordable, so for eight years I’ve bemoaned its lack of easy availability despite the company’s Canadian roots.

So what changed? Why is The Ordinary Peeling Solution only now for sale in Canada? What’s it for, anyway? How do we use it? What about sensitive skin? Answers coming up, starting with the basics in case you aren’t already familiar.

WHY IS THE ORDINARY AHA/BHA PEELING SOLUTION ONLY NOW AVAILABLE IN CANADA?

When The Ordinary Peeling Solution launched, Health Canada regulations had limited the AHA concentration in consumer products to 10%. Formulas with higher concentrations were classified as professional-use-only and thus could not be sold to the general public.

The PR email I received recently said merely that The Ordinary couldn’t sell the peeling solution here “unless there was additional messaging on our product boxes and bottles.” To change that, The Ordinary now includes “for-professional-use verbiage” on each bottle and box sold in Canada. A simple solution, yes?

Not sure why it took eight years, but I’m looking into it. In the meantime, I’m thrilled the solution is finally available here. The bottle I have was a gift our Liza Herz (Oldish.ca) gave me a couple of years ago when when she returned from a trip to the USA. At $13 CAD ($9.50 in the US), it’s a much, much more affordable alternative to my beloved AHA/BHA skin smoother from Drunk Elephant that bruises my wallet with its $108 CAD/ $80 USD price tag.

HOW TO USE THE ORDINARY PEELING SOLUTION

First, if you have sensitive skin, do not use The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution. There are other, gentler options designed for more frequent use that would be more appropriate for sensitive skin.

However, if you have skin you consider not-particularly-sensitive, that handles glycolic acid and lactic acid well, this formula is right up your skincare alley. And if you’re struggling with flaky patches ruining the look of your makeup, this could be your game changer. But there are rules of engagement, beginning with what to avoid.

AVOID USING THE ORDINARY PEELING SOLUTION…

• without reading the instructions carefully — improper use can result in a chemical burn

• the same day you use other exfoliating skincare, such as a manual scrub, or a toner or moisturizer that contains glycolic or lactic acid, for example

• immediately before or after using topical acne medication or treatments

• immediately after tweezing/ waxing/ threading brows or upper lip

• on the same day you use a dermal roller (poor Kyle Thomas did everything wrong)

• on the same day you use a prescription retinoid (i.e. Tretinoin) or potent retinol/ retinal serum or retinol/ retinol moisturizer available without prescriptions

• immediately before using a high-percentage L-ascorbic-acid Vitamin C formula

• immediately before sunscreen made with non-mineral UV filters if non-mineral formulas have ever made your skin sting

• with anything from The Ordinary that appears on the Do not use with list under Usage Details on the brand website
  

START WITH ONCE A WEEK

The Ordinary Peeling Solution is designed for weekly or bi-weekly use, depending on what your skin can handle. Cleanse your face, pat the moisture off (rubbing aggressively with a towel can make skin more sensitive to AHA stinging), and wait for skin to dry thoroughly. (Damp skin absorbs ingredients like these a little more easily, which may increase the potential for ouch.)

TAP TINGLING AREAS

Once you’ve applied the solution, expect some temporary tingling, maybe even a little stinging. I find tapping my fingertips over any areas that sting more than tingle reduces the sensation. I’ve also found that any tingling or stinging lessens and goes away within a minute or two.

RINSE OFF AFTER 10 MINUTES

Not gonna lie: part of the reason I’m including this section is to emphasize that this is a rinse-off formula. Not that anyone would use it as a layering serum — the vivid red hue is a big clue. (The colour comes from the Tasmanian pepperberry extract, apparently.) Also the Peeling Solution’s label says “10-Minute Exfoliating Facial” right on it.

The instructions, which you can read while waiting for your skin to dry before you start, advise leaving the solution on for 10 minutes. But if the tingling is too much for you, it’s okay to rinse after five minutes, or three, even. The solution will still work to some extent with less than the recommended time, and you can gradually increase it with each use.

Just don’t deliberately leave The Ordinary Peeling Solution on longer than 10 minutes. Set an alarm on your phone, two if you must (🙋🏻‍♀️). I get distracted ridiculously easily, so of course I have accidentally left the formula on longer than advised. But my skin can handle twice-daily applications of a 10% glycolic acid toner, so I had no disastrous results. However, I treated my complexion very gently afterward, with a simple fragrance-free hyaluronic acid serum and a layer of La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Gel B5.

I always rinse with cool water, by the way. It just feels good after the peeling solution.

This was a last-minute-gift-ideas post when I started it, but then I got weirdly sick and now we’re truly down to the last few hours before Santa does his rounds. But, as someone reminded me when I lamented not getting this done earlier, many folks will still be shopping for gifts and seasonal deals until Boxing Day sales are well over, so this post might yet come in handy. So, for details on a pillow-protector that stays cosy or cool as you like, a beauty brand that helps survivors of domestic violence, affordable skincare, budget-friendly brushes, and more, including socks, read on.

For the most part, this list of suggestions is organized by retailers so you can pick up what you need from one location. I’ve also included a few Amazon options for anyone who has to rely on that site for geographic or transportation reasons, although at this point, obviously delivery won’t be until after Boxing Day. Every item will have an online link because that’s where we are, but you should still be able to find all these in stores now.

AT SHOPPERS DRUG MART

I doubt anyone needs a reminder that Shoppers Drug Mart is a convenient stop for great beauty gifts at a broad range of price points in addition to everyday household and personal-care staples, but just in case, here’s that reminder. Stock varies from franchise location to franchise location; stores with larger beauty boutiques will of course have more luxury options, such as Guerlain, YSL, Dior, even Dyson, easy gift choices if your wallet allows. My suggestions lean mostly toward the more affordable end of the spectrum, with a side of practicality.

Under-eye hydrating masks are immensely popular, offered by many beauty brands. What makes Evio Pink Perspective Hydrogel Eye Therapy Patches ($22 CAD/ 6 pairs, Shoppers Drug Mart) different? They’ll cool, revitalize, moisturize and de-puff fatigued under-eyes without sliding down your face, but more than that, they’ll help survivors of domestic violence just like founder Brandi Leifso (that’s her, on the box). At just 21 years old, while living at a domestic violence safe house shelter in Vancouver (not for the first time in her young life), Brandi started her now-award-winning business with a laptop and only $15 to her name. She taught herself Photoshop, created mock-ups with which she pre-sold cosmetics to local boutiques, had inventory made with the pre-order funds, then delivered the finished products to her new retail clients. As Brandi’s success grew, she employed other women in shelters, and to date has donated $558,637 in products and funds to 27 organizations in North America that help domestic-violence survivors rebuild their lives. That’s how Evio under-eye masks (and more) are different and so gift-worthy.

This Byoma Mini Heroes Holiday Kit ($30 CAD, Shoppers Drug Mart) is sold out online but may still be available at a store in your hood – maybe call to find out? The products in this lineup are great for anyone at any age. I haven’t tried the Eye Gel or the Gel-Cream yet, but can highly recommend the Jelly Cleanser, the Hydrating Serum (my current favourite) and Moisturizing Rich Cream, three items already in my rotation. Actually, if the kit isn’t available at your local store, consider a full sized Jelly Cleanser or Hydrating Serum or Moisturizing Rich Cream as alternatives. But use the Find-in-Store widget on shoppersdrugmart.ca to see whether your local Shoppers carries the brand physically; not all of them do (mine doesn’t).

Naturium skincare launched at Shoppers Drug Mart earlier this year and is absolutely worth a look for gift options. My top recommendation as a holiday gift keeps things simple because you don’t need to know anything about the recipient’s skin type or skin concerns or skin goals — in fact, you should buy one for yourself, too, because winter. A brilliant option for her or for him, this Naturium Bio-Lipid Restoring Body Lotion ($24.99 CAD, Shoppers Drug Mart) became my one of my all-time favourite body lotions with the first application. Rich without being heavy or greasy, the fragrance-free formula soothes dryness as it goes on, sinks in quickly and leaves skin feeling wonderfully smooth, comfortable and content.

This Olay Retinol Night Routine Holiday Pack ($50 $37.50 CAD, Shoppers Drug Mart) is just one of the array of drugstore skincare holiday gift sets that I think are also a way to restock your own supply and try a sample of something new. I’ve mentioned this particular Olay option for four reasons: 1) Olay Retinol 24 is a gentle formula even for retinoid newbies; 2) the set includes a mini Olay SuperSerum Night, which puts powerhouse ingredients salicylic acid, niacinamide, lactic acid and peptides to work –— gently — while you sleep; 3) Olay’s new Cleansing Melts are a dopamine-boosting experience, wee woven sheets that when activated with water and fingertip friction in your palm transform into creamy rich lather; 4) the Shoppers Drug Mart sale price, which is lower than Amazon.ca’s $42.99 CAD at the moment.

Buying makeup for someone else can be challenging if you don’t wear much or any yourself, or don’t know what shades or textures your intended recipient likes best. However, this Clinique Swipe On (and Off) gift set ($52 CAD, Shoppers Drug Mart) requires none of that intel because its contents — High Impact Mascara in Intense Black, Quickliner for Eyes in Intense Chocolate, High Impact Easy Liquid Liner in Black, and a mini Take the Day Off makeup remover — are universally appealing, even for those who prefer minimal or natural-looking makeup looks.

On the other hand, sometimes a model image can tell you whether certain shades will work for the person you’re shopping for, as is the case with this limited-edition NYX Professional Makeup Buttermelt Face Palette ($35 $26.25 CAD, Shoppers Drug Mart) featuring two shades of the brand’s viral Buttermelt blushes and a Buttermelt Bronzer. Available in Dark (the above image) and Light/Medium, the intensely pigmented, buttery-smooth powder formulas are infused with shea, mango and almond butters, yet resist transferring and creasing, and promise 12-hour wear.

This Teaology Kombucha Tea Set ($70 CAD at Shoppers Drug Mart) is skincare with a little fragrant extra: a full-size, refillable Kombucha Tea Revitalizing Face Cream with a bonus Black Tea Vitamin C Mask and a complimentary little home-fragrance diffuser for added atmosphere. Teaology is an indulgent collection of face and body care infused with tea, such as the aforementioned kombucha (aka black tea ferment, said to have soothing, brightening antioxidant properties), as well as matcha, black tea and white tea. The face creams are up there on the price spectrum — this one retails for $70 CAD all by itself, without the sheet mask and diffuser included in this set.

CONAIR DIGITALAIRE DRYING WAND

I love the space-saving design of this sleek Conair Digitalaire Drying Wand ($229.99 CAD, Shoppers Drug Mart) which actually serves as three heat-styling tools in one: blow dryer, straightener and styler. A combing attachment and brush attachment are included with this version. See this Instagram post for how it works.

If you’re brave enough to hit a Sephora this close to The Day…

In the season of Everything Is Parched, hair can suffer as much as skin, especially if it’s already on the dry side because curls or menopause, and/ or damaged from chemical processes and regular heat styling. This limited-edition Fable & Mane Hair Oiling Magic Gift Set ($52 CAD, Sephora) with pre- and post-wash formulas is just the ticket. Sibling founders Akash and Nikita Mehta drew inspiration from childhood memories of their grandmother applying oils to their hair. The full-sized (55mL) pre-wash HoliRoots Hair Oil scalp treatment is a blend of lightweight seed and fruit oils plus extracts aimed at strengthening the hair at the roots, soothing the scalp, and, combined with regular massage, encouraging growth. The mini (14.4mL) post-wash MahaMane Smooth & Shine Hair Oil, also formulated with fruit and seed oils (not all the same as the pre-wash), is designed for (sparing) application on damp hair to add softness, strength and frizz-smoothing shine, as well as heat protection up to 450ºF.

Transparent lip gloss suits a wide range of skin tones because it’s transparent — the wearer’s natural lip shows through as part of the colour. So this Milk Makeup Mini Odyssey Fun Size Lip-Faves ($34 CAD, Sephora) is a safe yet fun bet for anyone at any age. (Gloss is in fact the most youthful lip look for mature faces; it takes five years off visual age.) I’m obsessed with the shade Adventure — look how pretty!

This Glow Recipe Serum Superstars kit ($65 $52 CAD, Sephora) of the brand’s bestsellers is adorable and appropriate for most complexions. It contains 15ml bottles of Strawberry Smooth BHA+AHA Salicylic Serum, Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops and Plum Plump Hyaluronic Serum, and a 5mL sample of the Cloudberry Bright Essence Toner.  (I wish the Avocado Soothing Skin Barrier Serum with Ceramides were in the lineup too, but although my 56-year-old skin loves the formula, it may be a bit too rich for younger faces.) 

Winter skin and drier complexions in particular will love the SkinFix Barrier Bundle Hydrating + Plumping Trio ($92 $55 CAD, Sephora). Skinfix Barrier Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream with ceramides and fatty acids, a dry-skin favourite, is full-sized in this kit, accompanied by a full-sized Ceramide + Ectoin Gentle Gel Cleanser (ectoin is an amino acid that boosts hydration and calms inflammation) and a wee Triple Lipid Activating Serum formulated with niacinamide and polyglutamic acid (peptide and more powerful humectant than hyaluronic acid). The moisturizer alone retails for $73; no wonder this set sold out online. Fingers crossed you find it in-store; it’s a goodie.

This brand has lower-priced gift sets, but the Biossance Most Loved + Luminous Brightening Routine Kit ($102 $81.60 CAD, Sephora) contains a full-sized Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil, which is light enough for every skin type all year round, but especially lovely for drier (and older) complexions that crave a hit of oil (applied on damp skin) in their skincare. The oil-soluble Vitamin C in this formula is also quite gentle. This kit comes with mini Squalane + 10% Lactic Acid Resurfacing Serum, Squalane + Marine Algae Eye Cream and Squalane + Omega Repair Cream, but the real bonus is that it’s on sale for less than the regular price of the Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil ($100 CAD).

A can’t-go-wrong option for all ages, the Dermalogica Cleanse + Glow Holiday Kit ($183 $155.50 CAD, Sephora) contains full sizes of three of the brand’s best, as far as I’m concerned. Pre-Cleanse Cleansing Oil, Special Cleansing Gel and a refillable Daily Microfoliant — I love all three, and in fact used Special Cleansing Gel and Daily Microfoliant for years; Daily Microfoliant is one of my all-time favourite gentle but super-effective physical exfoliants. Purchased separately, this hero trio is worth $223, by the way, so the sale price saves you $67. Just wrap it up and put your name on the tag, from Santa. And if you wallet can handle it, get another to give as a gift, too.

AT IKEA

Warm pillow? Or cool pillow? Give the gift of both with the Ikea KEJSAROLVON Warming/ Cooling Pillow Protector ($19.99 CAD, Ikea), a two-in-one that holds onto body warmth on one side to maintain your cosy when you want it most; the other side cools and stays cool while you slumber, even in summer. (I’ve been enjoying the KLUBSPORRE ergonomic cooling pillow, which is made of memory foam topped with with a gel layer that really does stay comfortably cool, whatever the temperature in my room.)

AT MARK’S

Maybe it’s my age, maybe it’s because we keep the temperature fairly low in the house, but whatever the reason, I’m now a firm fan of cosy socks as a Christmas gift. These Denver Hayes Lounge Socks with Sherpa Lining ($26.99 $20.24, Marks) are a nice length, not too short, and has no slip-grip dots on the bottom (I wear mine with slippers, so I don’t need them). Bonus: the recipient has 100 days to return them if they’re faulty (not that they should be; see next paragraph).

NOTE: Amazon has a range of fleece-lined or sherpa-lined socks for men and women on offer at a variety of price-points, but frankly it’s a crapshoot as to whether you get a well-made pair or not. You might find the fleece lining bunches up because it wasn’t sized to fit inside the outer sock, or the stitching is poor, or the slip-grip dots are too hard, or that the outer socks wear through the heel way fast… Best thing I can tell you is read the one-star and two-star reviews before ordering.

AT WALMART.CA

Y’all know that walmart.ca and walmart.com are online shopping setups similar to Amazon, right? It’s not new – I think since 2017 – but for some reason isn’t talked about as much as that other site. There are obvious similarities and differences, and probably common vendors, but those are details we don’t need to go into here, other than it’ll take a minute to get used to NOT using Amazon’s Prime Membership’s “Free Shipping” as an excuse to shop whenever the whim strikes…

Anyway, this little Walmart.ca blurb is just so I can mention that the Real Techniques Everyday Essentials brush set I talk about in the amazon.ca section below is $21.95 CAD at walmart.ca, about $2 less than it is on amazon. At this point Amazon delivery will come after the 27th, and prices may change for Boxing Day, but they may come in handy for gift-card recipients looking for something they still need or want.

For decades I was a loyal fan of MAC Cosmetic makeup brushes, and they’re still excellent if your wallet doesn’t complain. But most of the brushes I use now are much more affordable, in part because I want to be able to recommend good tools that fit a wide range of budgets, and in part because why not spend less when you can? In fact the brush I use most these days, for blending concealer, foundation, blush and highlighter is the RT 421 Soft Accent Brush, part of the Real Techniques Artist Essentials Brush Set ($24.15 CAD, amazon.ca) I bought myself in 2020. See that price? I’ll be honest, though, I don’t use fan brushes much, although they are perfect for sweeping away extra face powder and for dusting cheeks lightly with blush and highlighter. The Everyday Essentials ($23.98 CAD, amazon.ca) is a more universally useful set, with a fluffy blush brush I use for powder, a smaller setting brush I also use for powder, and a small rounded crease brush I use for blending shadows, as well as a foundation/ contour brush and a complexion sponge. The same set is also available as part of an Everyday Essentials + Eye Shade + Blend Brush Set ($35 CAD, amazon.ca) bundle with an eye-makeup brush trio that retails for $11 if purchased separately. (I’ll let you do the math; Amazon is tricky.)

For the person with thick shoulder-length-or-longer hair who blow-dries and styles her hair several times a week, a Dyson Supersonic or the new Dyson Supersonic Nural with added hair-and-scalp defence features is a brilliant gift choice if your wallet allows. No question. But if the matte white Laifen Hair Dryer SE ($169.99 $118.99 CAD, amazon.ca) is better for your budget, do it. Although it isn’t a true dupe for a Dyson Supersonic, the Laifen SE is nearly as powerful (the motor spins at 105,000 revolutions per minute vs Dyson’s 110,00 rpm), weighs less (0.9lbs vs Dyson’s 1.8lbs), and looks just as high tech. With a promised drying time of three times faster than traditional models (30 seconds for short hair, two and a half minutes for medium-length, four minutes for long), a temperature-cycling setting that rotates through three temperature settings (cold aka no heat, warm at 120ºF and hot at 176ºF) to minimize heat damage, and negative ion technology that smooths frizz and boosts shine as you dry, the Laifen SE closes the deal. Comes with a magnetic diffuser and nozzle.

Mainstream media in North America isn’t giving us the whole story on the horror in Occupied Palestine — the Occupier regime isn’t and has never been what we all thought it was. These two books, The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine by Palestinian historian Rashid Khalidi (2021, paperback, $20.58 CAD, amazon.ca) and The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine by Israeli historian and political scientist Ilan Pappe (2007, paperpack, $19.99 CAD, amazon.ca) will give readers a solid grounding on the subject without the insidious propaganda spin we’ve unwittingly been digesting for decades. 

I’ve spent a year hyper-focussed on learning more about this; my personal Instagram and Facebook accounts are full of social media posts featuring human rights lawyers, historians and academics as well as activists well-versed in the nuances of the history as well as the present. That’s a lot to take in if you don’t already follow me on IG or are a person FB friend; either of these two books is an easier start.

I don’t talk about supplements much because it’s really hard to prove they what they claim. But I do like Genuine Health; I’ve used the greens+ Extra Energy and collagen mixes for years. These Genuine Health Clear Focus capsules are fairly new. They take a beat to kick in and work best with regular use, but I think they actually worked for me. I say “worked,” because once I finished my first bottle, it was stupid expensive on Amazon, somewhere in the $40 mark, which I refused to entertain. But right now it’s less than $20 for 60 capsules, an actual Big Deal. Definitely the time to try them if you’re curious or stock up if you love them.

Winter has a lead foot; it’s speeding toward us and will arrive before we know it, always before we want it. Bioderma Atoderm Nourishing Cleansing Oil is a staple in households where sensitive, extra-dry skin rules. It doesn’t have any natural oil in it; rather it’s a synthetic oil formula, but that’s not a bad thing. (Whether or not something is synthetic isn’t a measure of how good or effective it is or isn’t.) Designed to minimize risk of allergic reaction, this very slightly fragranced cleanser is ultra-gentle on skin and a huge help in taking the sting out of Winter’s wicked drying effects on skin. 

Before The Blip the one-litre Bioderma Cleansing Oil was $19.99 CAD regular price on drugstore shelves, but went up a whopping $10 to $29 CAD once the world restarted. The Prime Big Deal price is the closest we’ll ever get to that magical time.

The Bioderma Atoderm Ultra-Soothing Balm for Very Dry, Irritated Skin is on sale as well, for a smidge under 25% off; worth popping into cart if your budget doesn’t mind a body cream nearing the $30 CAD mark.

For a “menopause skincare” article in Chatelaine‘s September issue, I interviewed skincare formulator Annie Graham, founder of Atomic Pom Labs in Calgary. Calgary is one of the worst sucks-the-most-moisture-out-of-skin places in Canada. (That description needs work, but no time.) You know what her ride-or-die moisturizer is for her face? Yep, CeraVe Moisturizing Cream with ceramides, in the big tub. She prefers the one with a pump, but that’s not on sale during Amazon Prime Big Deal Days, so I’ve linked to this one. Great for body skin too, of course. Oh! My bad, I said in the dek that everything I’m suggesting is between 20% and 40% off, but this one isn’t. Still, it’s less than $25 CAD for a huge amount, so there’s that.

I’ve finished a bottle of this Nivea Luminous Dark Spot Solution Serum already, and was genuinely sad to do so. It’s 29% off, and the only reason I haven’t bought another is that I have other things I need to finish. I really enjoyed this, especially in cooler weather when my skin needed a little extra protection against the dryness and sensitivity that comes with the drop in temperature. It’s lightly fragranced, yes, which I rather wish weren’t the case, but I got over it fast because I liked the smooth, comforting texture and the overall brightening it seemed to deliver. 

Did it erase my dark spots? Please, I’m 56. Dark spots are super-hard to fade with a drugstore product at this age. But my overall complexion definitely looked wonderfully… luminous. I’ll re-up when I’ve finished the other things I don’t want to waste. The corresponding Nivea Luminous Dark Spot Solution Even Tone Face Cream is less than $32 CAD right now, and quite nice too; I like it as a soothing night formula — yes, despite the scent.

Yes, you could wait for the Sephora sale to buy Paula’s Choice Exfoliate with 2% BHA and get 20% off if you’re a VIB Rouge member. If you haven’t spent $1000 Canadian at Sephora in the last year, though, this is your time. Blackheads are only going to get more annoying as we age; Paula’s Choice Exfoliate with 2% salicylic acid is excellent defence against them. You’ll also want to check Amazon.ca to see what else from PC might be part of the Prime Big Deals Days; it’s a solid skincare brand, especially if you’re keen to defy signs of time on your skin. I especially like the 20% Niacinamide serum (finished it) and the 1% Retinol Treatment Cream with Peptides (almost finished).

This Laneige Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Hydration Set is a great gift, sure, especially at 30% off, but I love it for DIY advent-calendar-style gifts, in which you give someone something to open every day for a whole month. Yes, I’d split this up, add some candy and other small-size treats — even socks, because -times-are-a-coming — to match the number of days you’d like your gift calendar to be.

An oversize blanket hoodie is all about comfort. Comfort is hard to come by when you can’t ignore the weight of evil in this world; my blanket hoodie is essential to my mental health and I wear it almost all winter long. MY KITSCH FAVOURITES

If you don’t think you need the 12 Days of Kitsch holiday calendar, or you’re thinking it might be worth snagging and splitting into gifts for more than one person (who’s gonna know?) let me tell you about a couple of things you might want for yourself:

KITSCH SATIN PILLOWCASE: I love my Kitsch satin pillowcase ($36 CAD and $19 USD at mykitsch.com) more than the expensive Slip silk pillowcase I tucked away in my closet after my first night with the Kitsch. 

That I prefer a satin pillowcase over silk might shock some people, but for me it’s the texture. The Kitsch 600 thread-count satin just feels cooler and smoother against my skin than the Slip mulberry silk does. I also appreciate the tidy zip closure. Is the satin better for my hair than a regular cotton pillowcase? Maybe. ‍♀️ At least on par with silk given the fabric’s smooth finish.

Not all satin pillowcases are alike, mind you. I’ve tried a couple from other brands and got rid of them fast — they felt awful, terribly synthetic, almost like plastic. Kitsch satin pillowcases, though, are really nice quality at a decent price. (When the brand sent me the pillowcase to try out, they gave me this code to share: KITSCH20 to save 20% on your order. I don’t know if it applies to sale prices, but no harm trying!).

KITSCH EXTRA WIDE SPA HEADBAND: My Kitsch extra-wide spa headband ($19 CAD and $10 USD at mykitsch.com) is my most favourite Kitsch thing ever. Purchased it myself. Aside from when I’m washing my face, sheet masking or using an AHA peel, I’ve actually worn it out on cool-weather walks — it’s cosy genius with a top knot! If it were available in black, I’d buy another just to wear as a top-knot hat.

NOTE: The headband is available only in the shade Dusty Rose on the Kitsch website. However — and this is actually great news — it’s available on another website in Misty Blue, and AT A LOWER PRICE: $13.99 CAD at well.ca.

Turns out Well.ca carries a range of Kitsch products priced almost 30% lower than you’ll get them via the Canadian mykitsch.com website. I don’t now how long these prices will be in effect; might be lower because they’re shipping within Canada, or they might be lower because the Well.ca team hasn’t realized Kitsch has increased their retail pricing. They don’t have the advent calendar, but they have several of the items featured, including the heatless curl set for $24.99 CAD, select pillowcases starting at $25.79 CAD, and the Ice Facial Roller for $24.99 CAD. Ball caps do. not. protect. you. from. sun. exposure. Sure, they shield your scalp, but that’s about it. Still, I wear one every time I head out for a walk, at least until it’s time to switch to a toque (and I’m thinking about getting a knit ball cap for winter this year).

Before I tell you why I’m ball-cap dependant — yes, I’d say I am — I’ll explain why they suck at UV defence, just in case you know someone who needs to hear this.

BALL CAPS DO NOT PROTECT AGAINST SUN DAMAGE

True statement. Ball caps do not protect against UV, not in any meaningful way except the top of your head, which just. isn’t. enough. 

Ball caps do not keep direct sunlight off your face, neck and ears with any degree of reliability. Their effectiveness at providing any shade at all depends entirely on the angle and direction of the sun and the angle at which you hold your head. And where the sun hits your skin changes every time you tilt your head or turn your face. Plus, UV bounces around, reflected off glass, pavement, water, and, in the winter, snow.

As you’ll see in the video below, after dermatologist Samantha Ellis speaks, a ball cap doesn’t even reliably protect the centre of the face unless the light co-operates.

See what I mean? The lower the sun is in the sky, the more its rays hit your face. And the ball cap with the transparent visor in the video? That photo is a clear illustration of why it’s useless for UV protection. The best that can be said about that thing is that it improves the ability to see while you’re in the sun. Hello, segue!

WHY I ACTUALLY WEAR A BALL CAP

Obviously, I rely on sunscreen as a UV defence necessity — SPF 60 or bust! — but a ball cap has become a necessity too, as you’ll have noted from the video. I depend on a ball cap to see comfortably in sunshine. 

A UPF 50 hat with a six-inch brim would work of course, but only if I’m planning to lounge on a deck someplace, not on a brisk walk or on a breezy or windy day. Plus, I’m not really a hat person.

I could wear sunglasses, but for me they aren’t a particularly comfortable solution. Most don’t fit my face well, and light tends to bounce between the lenses and my face, which sometimes makes seeing clearly a bit of a challenge. But that’s another video and another post. *grin*

When I realized I’d bought a fake Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics SPF50 PA++++ sunscreen, I bought another one. Not because I wanted another fake, but because I wondered how many Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice SPF50 sunscreens for sale on Amazon.ca were counterfeit.

If this is the first you’ve heard this story, pop over to the previous post for the beginning. If you just want to figure out if the tube you have is real, this is a post of comparison photos to help with that.

In some photos I have two fakes; they also appear in the photos featuring three fakes. I’ve posted them all here because the lighting differs a bit, and the more comparison photos out there, the better. Although every monitor display is different in regards to brightness and colour representation, I’ve come as close as I can to what I see off camera.

You’ll notice two of the fakes look nothing like the real thing; that’s because counterfeiters who sell online really don’t care if the product itself fools you. Why spend money on custom packaging when it cuts into their profits? They just need to make the sale, and hope you don’t think to request a refund.

FAKE VS REAL BEAUTY OF JOSEON SUNSCREEN

When I recorded the video below, I had only one counterfeit sunscreen, and it was in packaging a first-time purchaser wouldn’t necessarily realize is fake. You can clearly see differences when they’re side by side, though (although the video lighting and quality make them look quite different from the photos later in this post).

Here’s a little slideshow of photographs comparing the real Beauty of Joseon sunscreen with the fake in the above video, and a recap of the differences.

• ✔️ The colour of the real Beauty of Joseon tube is a bright cream shade, with a peachy-yellow undertone.
• ✖️ This fake tube is a cream shade too, but more subdued, with a green undertone.
• ✔️ The legit tube is made from what I assume is coated aluminium, not plastic. (Again, exact wording from my email to Refinery 29 UK, but not how it appears in the story.) However, the top part under the real tube’s cap is definitely plastic, which I hadn’t mentioned, so there’s that. 
• ✔️ When you press on the real tube, it holds the depression.
• ✖️ This fake tube is all plastic, fairly firm, and bounces back immediately, with no depression marks.
• ✔️ The real tube opening is small, and was properly sealed with foil.
• ✖️ This fake tube opening is larger, and the foil seal slid off when I removed the cap.
• ✔️ The expiry date on the real tube reads “EXP” and the date.
• ✖️ This fake tube reads “XP”- and the date.
• ✔️ The real Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics SPF 50 formula is a silky, soft cream shade and texture.
• ✖️ This fake Beauty of Joseon is a more liquid chalky, stark white.

REAL BEAUTY OF JOSEON SUNSCREEN VS TWO FAKES

As I mentioned earlier, I snapped these images before the third counterfeit Beauty of Joseon sunscreen arrived; including them anyway because why not?

REAL BEAUTY OF JOSEON SUNSCREEN VS THREE FAKES

This slideshow includes the boxes, because although most counterfeiters don’t care how accurate they are — again, the objective is the initial sale so they get your money — you might as well know what’s out there. I’ve included TWO authentic boxes because there’s a slight colour difference that can happen with different print runs. And although I have three fakes, two of them that look completely different were probably distributed by the same supplier because the boxes are the same.

Note: current boxes from Beauty of Joseon feature a QR code; the authentic boxes I have are older and did not. However, the FAKE boxes in the following slide show DO have QR codes that lead to an Ali Express page that no longer exists.

HOW MANY FAKE SUNSCREENS ARE THERE?

Beauty of Joseon’s Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics SPF 50 isn’t the only sunscreen counterfeiters are ripping off, and these probably aren’t the only versions of this one floating around. Round Lab and Isntree, also Korean skincare brands, also seem to be dealing with a counterfeits issue.

Fake sunscreen has become a big enough concern that retailers such as StyleKorean are posting infographics on how to tell whether your sunscreen is real or fake:

Unfortunately where Beauty of Joseon is concerned, and likely with the others too, there are several fakes with variations in packaging details and textures. Comparisons like these, and even photographs, can help only so much.

As well, some sunscreens might not be counterfeits, but just actual “fake” or ineffective sunscreens — the Refinery 29 UK post in which I’m mentioned features cosmetic scientist and formulator Dr. Julian Sass and his investigation into an “allegedly fake” SPF 45 formula sold by the brand on the label. Not the same thing as scammers ripping off real products for cheap, but still scammy, and dangerous for your skin (and wallet).

Fakes are big business in every market, from designer goods to prescription and non-prescription drugs, to skincare and makeup, and yeah, sunscreen. The best way to avoid fake anything online is to make your first purchase directly from the brand website so you know what the real thing looks, feels and smells like before you shop for it elsewhere. And make sure that “elsewhere” is an authorized retailer.

If you somehow wind up with a fake anyway (it sometimes happens even with an authorized retailer), make sure you get your money back right away. (A post on that is forthcoming.)

We’ve heard for years about counterfeit beauty products on certain e-commerce websites, but I’d never encountered such things myself until I decided I really needed to try a sunscreen that isn’t sold in Canada.

I’m generally quite satisfied with skincare available here. Ordering from outside of Canada is expensive when you take currency conversion and import duties into account, never mind the eco-footprint involved — and the inability to try textures before purchasing. But I’d seen so much love for this Beauty of Joseon SPF 50 PA++++ Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics sunscreen on Instagram that I needed to try it.

I placed an order on StyleKorean.com, a website that specializes in popular Korean skincare, makeup, k-pop and more. Then I spotted Beauty of Joseon sunscreen on Amazon.ca and thought, “Wow! Amazing! And at such a good price… I’ve heard of counterfeits selling via Amazon third party vendors, but who would counterfeit sunscreen??” 

So I popped a three-pack into my cart and checked out.

(By the way, the above thought in italics appears in the exact wording I sent to a Refinery29.com UK writer for a story called Sun Blocked, but that’s not how it appears “quoted” in the piece.) 

I BOUGHT A FAKE SUNSCREEN — OOPS

Scammers. Scammers would absolutely fake sunscreen — heck, they fake life-saving medication too, apparently — and scammers would sell it on Amazon via third-party accounts.

Thankfully, I recorded myself trying the sunscreen from Amazon and posted it on Instagram and TikTok (where it’s had more than 2.6 million views), so there’s that.

In the year since I posted these videos, it seems people still need to know not to attempt the purchase of Beauty of Joseon sunscreen on Amazon.ca nor on Amazon.com. In their Instagram story highlights, the brand makes it clear that because their sunscreen filters haven’t been approved by the FDA (or Health Canada) that they do not permit the sale of their sunscreens on Amazon in North America. 

And by now if you search “Beauty of Joseon sunscreen” on Amazon, you shouldn’t find Relief Sun at all (there were loads when I bought mine). That said, I did find a Beauty of Joseon Sunstick SPF 50 that I would not advise buying.

Some skincare by Beauty of Joseon, though, is available via an official Amazon.com storefront (run by StyleKorean). But NOT THEIR SUNSCREENS.

HOW TO AVOID COUNTERFEIT SKINCARE ONLINE

The easiest way to avoid buying counterfeit or fake sunscreen or skincare online is to buy directly from the brand website if you aren’t familiar with the products. It may cost a bit more if international shipping is involved, but it’ll be worth it for authenticity. You need to get to know the real packaging, texture, scent and feel of the formulas.

HOT TIP: if the pricing is a lot less than other sites or seems really cheap, AVOID!

After your first purchase from the brand website, then you can try shopping from a retailer the company recommends. For example, here’s Beauty of Joseon’s list of authorized retailers around the world, including online vendors. (Again, note: while some of their skincare is accessible from local storefronts and websites like walmart.ca, their sunscreens are not. However, StyleKorean.com is a legit Beauty of Joseon SUNSCREEN retailer; best if you live in the US. If you’re in Canada, Stylevana.com is a better source for their sunscreen.)

As well, via Instagram or TikTok you can shoot most brands a direct message to ask questions about where to buy – and whether the website you just bought from is an authorized detailer. (Instagram allows you to attach photos.)

And if you ever find yourself shopping on Amazon for skincare (yes, it can be done safely), you need to pay careful attention to who the actual seller is, regardless of the brand. The video below shows you where to look for that information. (See? I’m holding another fake Beauty of Joseon SPF 50 Relief Sun + Probiotics Sunscreen. And I have a third fake I haven’t shown in a video yet.)

TLDR: HOW AVOID FAKE SKINCARE ONLINE RECAP

While buying legit skincare online can be tricky if the brand you want isn’t readily available at local retailers, it can be done safely with these guidelines:

1) Buy from the brand website if you’re new to the products

2) Once you’re familiar with the product packaging, texture and feel (or you have some left from the first purchase to compare), if a multi-brand retail website offers convenience, easier or less expensive shipping, or great sales on the regular, check to see whether that site is on the brand’s list of authorized e-retailers.

3) If the pricing on another website is too good to be true… yeah, you know. No.

4) If you think you’ve been scammed and want answers, you can direct message most brands on social media. Instagram allows you to send photos.

The post FAKE SUNSCREEN ALERT: HOW TO AVOID COUNTERFEIT SKINCARE ONLINE appeared first on Beautygeeks.

“Everyone wears exactly the right amount of sunscreen,” said no dermatologist ever. I bet that’s something dermatologists wish they could say, though. But no matter how many stories about proper sunscreen application hit social media or the news every year, most of us still don’t wear enough to get the SPF 30, SPF 50 or SPF100 marked on the package.

Part of the problem is that most of us have never thought about how sunscreen companies determine the level of SPF of each sunscreen formula. 

Why does that matter? 

Because basically we need to do what they do to get the same UV protection results.

Obviously, evaluating a sunscreen’s level of UV defence is more complex than just one step, but this is the only one we need to try to replicate: 

When determining a formula’s sun protection factor, sunscreen is applied at a thickness of two milligrams of sunscreen per square centimetre of skin.

Translating that to how much we need for various body parts is hella MATH-y, so experts rely on teaspoon measurements, shot glasses, golf balls, finger-lengths, etc. — all legit references — to give us a general idea of the amount to apply.

HOW MUCH SUNSCREEN TO USE, ACCORDING TO HEALTH CANADA

I confess, I didn’t realize Health Canada sunscreen guidelines actually list the proper amount per body part until about six minutes ago. Back in 2019, Health Canada released this little video about how much sunscreen adults should apply for the best UV protection:

The proper application of sunscreen according to Health Canada is as follows:

• 1 teaspoon for the face and neck
• 1 teaspoon for each arm
• 1 teaspoon for each leg
• 1 teaspoon for the front of your torso and
• 1 teaspoon for your back

SUNSCREEN MATH FOR GOOD UV PROTECTION

A teaspoon is equivalent to 5mL, so 7 teaspoons adds up to 35mL — that’s important math when you think about the size of the tubes or bottles of sunscreen you use and how many you go through on vacation or during the summer, or during the year if you wear it every day (of course you do).

Note: although the upper chest or decolletage isn’t specifically mentioned in the Health Canada guidelines, a teaspoon is enough for face, neck, ears and whatever skin is exposed by your neckline.

HOW MUCH IS A SHOT-GLASS WORTH OF SUNSCREEN?

For years, I’ve been told by dermatologists that adults need a shot-glass worth of sunscreen for the whole body. There’s no set shot-glass size, exactly, but generally it’s about 44mL if you live in the US and about 30mL if you live in Canada. Health Canada recommends a total of 35mL if you measure with a teaspoon (worth doing if you’re not great at visual estimates), although overall it kind of depends on how tall and curvy you are. (Truly, it’s best to over-estimate the amount you need if you think you’ll need more than the “average-sized” person. Sunscreen directions often say to apply sunscreen generously, after all.)

HOW MUCH SUNSCREEN TO USE FOR YOUR FACE

For the last few years, I’ve been insisting we need about a 1/4 teaspoon of sunscreen JUST FOR THE FACE, measurement advice I first heard from cosmetic chemist Dr. Michelle Wong, aka Lab Muffin Beauty Science. It’s less than Health Canada’s recommendation, but Michelle explains where her numbers came from and did all the math in this blog post and video here :

I would never. Hurts my brain, all this math + arts + crafts. But I figure my face and Michelle’s face can’t be that different in size, so when I can, I use an actual 1/4 teaspoon to measure out my facial sunscreen, and use another 1/4 teaspoon for my ears, neck and the little bit of skin exposed by the boatneck tops I wear for walks. (When I don’t use a measuring spoon, I tend to overdo it, and then get accused on Instagram and on TikTok of using a whole tube of the stuff on my face.) I double the amount for my forearms, and triple it on rare occasions my arms are fully exposed. 

HOW MUCH IS TWO FINGER-LENGTHS OF SUNSCREEN?

If you’re on social media, you’ve likely heard about Jude Chao’s three-fingers method of measuring sunscreen to protect your face. Since her post in September of 2019, it’s become known the two-finger method for people with larger fingers than Jude’s (wow, this does sound weird, but whatever). Either way, originally based on the 1/4 teaspoon recommended for the face, this method has been really helpful for many people who weren’t applying enough. 

But of course finger-length measurements aren’t foolproof because the amount people squeeze out along their fingers varies quite a bit, as does the actual size of people’s fingers. (Some guy on TikTok insists that one finger-length is enough, but his fingers are massive! I’ll add a link to that video when I find it again.) The consistency of the sunscreen also matters; some formulas are just too thin to dispense like this.

BEST PRACTICES FOR USING ENOUGH SUNSCREEN

It’s simple enough: your best bet for really getting into your head the right amount of sunscreen you need is to measure it for yourself at least a few times. I’ve already mentioned that I do that myself, and it really does help. 

In fact, whether you stash your SPF stuff in the bathroom or by the front door, keep measuring spoons with your sunscreen, so you can measure before you apply, then later use the spoons as visual comparisons.

If you’ve been underusing sunscreen before now, the right amount is going to feel like a lot more than you’re used to. Applying that much can also be tricky if you’re using a fluid formula rather than a thicker cream type. A tip for easier application: smooth sunscreen on the skin in layers. And consider Jude’s application technique with cushion puffs made of hydrophilic polyurethane (PU), designed to apply liquids and creams smoothly without absorbing the product.

IMPORTANT: apply sunscreen about 15 minutes before sun exposure to give the formula time to dry down and set on your skin so it stays put as you move around. If you apply sunscreen before getting dressed, give the application enough time to dry down so you don’t rub any off with your clothing.

And when you apply sunscreen, remember:

• the back of your neck
• behind your ears as well as your ears themselves
• any skin exposed by your neckline
• your ankles if your pants or leggings are cropped
• the backs of your hands
• the tops of your feet if you’re wearing flip flops or sandals
• the soles of your feet if you’re spending time at the pool or beach
• reapply sunscreen on towel-dried skin after swimming or sweating profusely
• reapply sunscreen every two hours

Some of these are items I already love; a couple are on my Want-Want list — I’m trying so hard not to over-stock! I’ve had to throw a bunch of things out because I bought so much I couldn’t use up before the expiry date that my VIB Rouge discount (which I no longer have) saved me absolutely nothing in the long run. I don’t know how helpful it is to read about items I don’t yet own, but for me writing about them here is like discussing potential or future purchases with friends. I share why I covet them and might even recommend them without yet having them, and you share any related insight. *grin*

SEPHORA SPRING SALE 2024: LIPS

Clarins Lip Comfort Oil (7mL/ $38 CAD or $30 USD) is by far my favourite “lip oil” formula because it doesn’t feel oily on the lips at all. Instead it feels like a plush, luxurious gloss that actually provides comforting conditioning (Lip Comfort Oil is such a good name). It lasts fairly well for a glossy finish, about what you’d expect if you weren’t eating or drinking something, and I don’t find it particularly sticky. I just realized I’ve never posted my IG video about Clarins Lip Comfort Oil here! 

My fave shade is a limited-edition called Lovely Rose that Clarins has released the last three Novembers as a promotion for Look Good Feel Better. It has a hint more pigment than other similar shades in the lineup. If you prefer a little more tint too, try Cherry.

Summer Fridays Dream Lip Oil (4.5mL/ $35 CAD or $26 USD) is my recommendation for someone who wants a lip oil that doesn’t feel especially oily, but also doesn’t feel sticky at all. As with most of these types of lip colour formulas, the shades are quite sheer. But three of the four are also shades you won’t find in the Clarins lineup (see second slide, above). Blush Dreams, Soft Mauve and Rosewood Nights are pretty and soft creamy neutrals. Pink Cloud is pretty too, a soft yet bright-ish creamy pink hue. The glossy finish doesn’t last particularly long, but they do leave a subtle stain (it’ll show up more on lips like mine, that don’t have much natural pigment).

Innbeauty Project Glaze Lip Oil (6mL/ $23 CAD or $18 USD) offers one mL less than the Clarins size, but a little easier on the wallet. And it’s on my Want-Want list despite my having an array of lip oils I already enjoy. I need to get into an actual store to test the consistency — I prefer lip oils that feel like plush lip gloss (like my fave, Clarins Lip Comfort Oil), not like oil, and apparently this brand’s texture is right on target for me. If it’s like the Clarins, I’ll have to keep myself in check until the Berry Jam shade becomes available and it’s time to replace something I have… wish me luck and fortitude, please!

SEPHORA SPRING SALE 2024: LIP & CHEEK

Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Lip and Cheek Secrets ($68 CAD and $50 USD) is a one-and-done purchase (unless you really need an eyeshadow palette) for face and lip colour as far as I’m concerned. Pillow Talk is such a popular shade and looks great on so many complexions. That said, the lipstick shade itself tends to look a little brown on my light neutral skintone, but I can tweak it with a pinker lip pencil or the lip gloss that comes in this set. And I’d use everything in more than one way: I’d use the Beauty Light Wands on eyelids as well as cheeks, and same with the Pillow Talk Lipstick. Even the lip gloss can be used as blush on its own or combined with a little of either Beauty Light Wand. It’s a versatile little set, and perfect for travel as well.

Milk Makeup Cooling Water Jelly Tint Lip + Cheek Blush Stain (5g/ $33 CAD or $24 USD) may or may not be my wallet’s kryptonite. I get weak in the knees for a cheek stain I can also put on my lips (or vice versa; these do not disappoint. I’ve got Chill (red), Spritz (coral orange) and Burst (poppy pink) as samples from the PR agency (thank you!) and I have Splash (berry plum) on my Want Want list for the Fall sale. (I adore a violet shade for cheeks!) I love the natural but heightened flush a stain delivers, but this kind of formula is also a good base under cream or powder if you want more impact and lasting power.

SEPHORA SPRING SALE 2024: FACE

SimiHaze Sun Flush All-Over Face Tint Liquid Blush (2.5mL/ $48 CAD or $35 USD) is new to me, from US-based Palestinian twins Simi and Haze. Love the look of this natural, sunkissed-finish on skin (see second slide, above). Designed for use on cheeks, eyelids (and lips, according to simihazebeauty.com*) — just dab and blend — this face tint (as well as their Solar Tint Cream Blush Duo and Velvet Blur Matte Lipstick Balm) is on my Want-Want list for now; it’s expensive for such a little amount, so I’ve got some thinking to do.

Live Tinted Hueglow Liquid Highlighter Drops (50mL/ $54 CAD) are just lovely for skin that leans a little toward dry and dehydrated. I am somewhat obsessed; here’s another clip from a while back that I meant to share here before now, but didn’t… ‍♀️

The Hueglow bottle is a generous size in the world of highlighter fluid, by the way — it’s 50mL and you need so little; the shades are super sheer, too, so if your complexion looks like mine, Dusk will still work for you. HOT TIP: if you’ve found your matte foundations are now too drying for your skin, apply a little Golden Hour (soft gold) or Dusk (bronze) all over your face first, then apply your foundation and you’ve got a whole new gorgeous glowy finish. (In the video above, I’d applied Hueglow in Dusk around the perimeter of my face and Hueglow in Dawn (rose gold) on my cheeks before my matte foundation.)

I have other favourites from Live Tinted (the black pencil liner stays put in my upper waterline SO well), I’m working on a profile post of lovely founder Deepica Mutyala, so I’ll stop now. *grin*

SEPHORA SPRING SALE 2024: EYE SHADOW

Makeup by Mario Master Mattes Eyeshadow Palette: The Neutrals ($68 CAD and $50 USD) is giving me grabby hands — the grabbiest. I bought the Ethereal Palette almost as soon as it was launched and adore it; it’s perfect for someone who loves natural makeup with a little extra (the shimmery shades are such dreamy toppers) along with the potential for drama with more intensity. I don’t have this matte neutrals palette yet, but it’s at the top of my Want-Want list. 

Why do I have the grabbiest of grabby hands for the Makeup by Mario Master Mattes Neutral palette? Because it’s truly NEUTRAL. Not “neutral” as in browns and creams and shades that go with everything, but “neutral” as in not warm and not cool. Most neutral eyeshadow palettes these days are too warm, too orangey for my fair neutral complexion. (Case in point: Mario’s earlier mattes palette that interests me not at all.) I also lack matte shadows in my kit — most are dusty and dry and suck the light from the skin. But Makeup by Mario mattes are lovely, soft and almost creamy — suede, if you will — and don’t turn my lids into the Sahara. If you’ve been eyeing a matte eyeshadow palette, I’d recommend this in a heartbeat without even having tried it myself. Get it, NOW. Seriously, if I were to have matte eyeshadow dreams, this palette would be their embodiment. #grabbygrabbyhands

Huda Beauty Creamy Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette in Neutral Brown ($44 CAD or $32 USD) is different enough from the Makeup by Mario Neutral palette that of course I want them both. This one is a cream-to-powder formula, and a little peachier, or apricot — a bit warmer — and a little less expensive if your wallet is trying to make you choose.

I admit I’m a wee bit concerned at the peachiness given my absolutely not-warm-not-cool complexion and palette preferences, but peach/ apricot are low on the temperature dial of warm shades, so there’s that. Apparently the formula can crease, but a little eye lid primer should take care of that.
