Firstly, with this challenge the beautiful fall colors/scenery played a very important role. This photo had an incredible, colorful location. Also, the 'splendor' on their faces is wonderful! This image also was also composed well, had nice, sharp focus, and is an all around beautiful photograph.”

I Heart Faces Workshop - Saturday Recap

After a fun filled Friday shooting outside, Saturday we stayed inside for lessons by Pete Lacker.

Pete started off by showing us his amazing portfolio from over 20 years of commercial photography work. After he showed us his awesome skills, it was time for him to go through the workshop attendee’s photos for a personal critique and lesson on what they could have done differently. As he went through each person’s photos, we learned many tips about moving around our subject, finding better light and lots of quick and easy photoshop edits.

From there Pete got out his camera and worked his magic on Brooke. It was fun to see all the different ways to shoot a person in natural light. We don’t know if Brooke thought it was that much fun?? We thought she was a great sport though.

Next, Kat and Sonya came by from Sticviews and told us all about their cool photography products. We loved the laptop skins and iPhone stickers they made for us.

These things stick to everything! We even stuck an I Heart Faces logo on a baby onesie for Julie Rivera’s new baby girl. We're sure she will crack up when she gets that gift:-)

During our lunch break, we had some fun giveaways!

Of course it’s never a complete girl weekend without shopping! We were excited when we found out Arlington Camera was coming with lots of cute camera bags, lenses and other fun camera goodies. We're pretty sure we wiped them out of their inventory of camera bags!!

I Heart Faces Workshop – Friday Recap

Today we are going to try to do a brief recap of the first day of our Dallas Photography Workshop. We’re thinking that’s going to be difficult to do though because there are so many fun things to share!

Thursday Evening:

Our workshop “unofficially” started on Thursday evening with an informal Meet-and-Greet in our hotel suite. We got to meet many of the workshop attendees at that time and had so much fun learning more about one another and chatting about our photography goals and dreams. We also were able to meet D’Ann…one of the ladies who would be teaching us some tips at the next day’s shoot.

One highlight of Thursday night was the goodie bags that we handed out to each attendee. The bags were full of awesome rebates and freebies that our amazing sponsors provided for each of them!

Friday Morning:

We woke up bright and early on Friday so that we could board the shuttle and head on over to the beautiful Dallas Arboretum for a day of hands-on photography opportunities.

When we arrived at the Arboretum, we had a fun surprise waiting for everyone! Rick (or “Mr. Tamron” as we like to call him) was waiting in the parking lot for us with two huge bags full of Tamron lenses. We were each allowed to borrow a lens or two for the day to try them out and see which ones we like the most…we then borrowed them back-and-forth throughout the day and quickly fell in love with most of them.

Tell you what, it was photography heaven waiting for our turn to pick out a lens for the day!

Our morning was spent chasing around a bunch of active kids. Since in real life we all have to do sessions with real kids (not models) that’s what we worked with during Friday’s session…we are so thankful for Amy’s friends who took time out of their busy week to have their kiddos “model” for us. It gave all of the photographers an amazing opportunity to talk together and share tips on how to capture children in the moment…and it gave Amy’s friends a whole slew of beautiful portraiture to print and hang in their homes after the workshop was over. :)

Friday Afternoon:

After eating a yummy lunch together, we got ready to begin our second shooting session of the day. A bridal session with the amazing Amy Karp and a beautiful young lady, Lizz, who agreed to be our “bride” for the day.

If you notice how awesome Lizz’s hair was that day, it’s because one of the incredibly talented hair stylists at Xavier’s Place dressed her hair for her that morning. We can’t thank them enough for the help they gave us that day. If you live in the Dallas area, head on over to Xavier’s as soon as possible. You won’t regret it! :)

Amy spoke a bit about her shooting style and helped everyone set their cameras to the often-intimidating manual mode to try out that way of shooting for the afternoon. She also helped quite a bit by showing us ideas of how to actively pose your bride to get the angles that will show them off to their best potential.

Honestly though, it would have been difficult to take a bad photo in this situation…the location was gorgeous and the bride was amazing to work with. It was the type of shooting session that most photographers would dream to be part of!

We were excited that the photographer who would be teaching our Saturday session was able to show up to hang out with us on Friday as well. While Pete was visiting with us, he captured this gorgeous photo of Amy Karp:

While everyone else was busy shooting the cutie-pie kiddos and the beautiful bride, we spent a lot of our time shooting…them! Hee!

And those stinkers took photos of us too. Drat! :)

Getting Ready for Week 45 - Autumn Beauty

WEEK 45 - November 16th - "Autumn Beauty"

This week's challenge is all about capturing a photo of a person surrounded by the beautiful colors of autumn. If you don't have falling leaves and pumpkins in your neck of the woods right now, feel free to enter any photo of a person that has fall colors in it (ie. red, yellow, orange, etc.)

We are all about faces here at I ♥ Faces, so at least part of the face must be clearly visible in your entry.

It’s fun to welcome one of our long-time participants, Sarah Long from Joyful Photography, as our Guest Photographer Judge this week. She describes herself in this way: “I love what I do. I love that people love what I do. I am fluent in sign language, I love a good cup of tea, and my friends and loved ones affectionately call me a hippie and an earthy-birthy mamma.”

Workshop News

We just said goodbye to the last workshop attendees and are sitting in the hotel talking about how much fun we had. There were lots of friendships made, fun memories were created (more about that later!) and, of course, thousands of photos taken. We hope everyone got a lot out of our workshop and will soon return home safe and rested... although we are doubtful about the rested part:-)

If you want to get a glimpse of some shots we took, be sure to visit our Flickr Group. We are adding daily. We figured about 50,000 photos were taken in two days!!

We had so much fun with our instructors, D'Ann, Amy & Pete along with everyone who attended. Be sure to check back, we'll be sharing memories all week long. We missed those of you who couldn't make it!

Fix-It Friday #36 - Hands-On Photo Editing Fun!

We had so much fun last night at our Dallas Workshop Meet-and-Greet! It was amazing to finally meet so many of the I ♥ Faces Workshop fans in person...face-to-face. :) We are now getting ready to head off to the Dallas Arboretum for a fun day of shooting and learning together. We can't wait to see what today's teachers will be teaching us. D'Ann Wright will be showing us how to work more effectively with children and Amy Karp will be showing tips on how to capture a bride on her special day.

In the meantime, it's Fix-It Friday here at I ♥ Faces!! This is our day to learn new photo editing tricks from our contributors as they explain how they “fixed-up” the special photo we gave them. The fun part is that we then all get to play along with the Fix-It ourselves!

Hi folks, it's Amy here. I just wanted to post a quick update about our Photography Workshop.

Angie arrived in Dallas yesterday and we had a busy day of shopping for last minute items. No goofing off for us... we were on a mission!

When I discovered Angie had never seen Twilight, I had to buy it right away! So we had a fun night of filling goodie bags with items from our sponsors. She got a little giddy over Edward, can't say I blame her!

Tutorial: “Capturing Sun Flare”

Due to our upcoming Sun Flare photo challenge during the week of November 23rd, we asked Boybarian Dad to write a tutorial giving hints and techniques for capturing sun flare. We know the week of Thanksgiving is going to be a busy one for most of you, but guess what?! You are not going to want to miss out on this challenge…because the one and only Becker is going to be our judge that week!! Woo-hoo!

So, be sure to read Boybarian Dad’s tutorial and then get yourself outside to begin capturing your own beautiful sun flare photo to submit for that week’s challenge...your photo needs to have sun flare and a face in it. :)

Do you want to learn how to get sun flare in your pictures like this?

Sun flare has become very popular in today’s photography. It used to be that if you had some flare in your pictures, it was classified as a poor image (you got the exposure wrong). Nowadays, photographers are trying to get glare in a picture. One method is artificially with a photoshop action. Some of these are free downloads and others cost a little coin. However, they don’t always look just right.

The other method would be to capture the flare with the camera. This is the easiest and most cost effective approach. The other bonus is you don’t have to own a photo editing program. This method saves time so this is the route I always follow. So the enquiring minds want to know how it’s done. It’s literally as easy as slicing bread with a Wustof knife!

Here are the secrets:
1. You must have a Nikon. If you want try these secrets with a Canon, your entire image will turn out white.

2. This might seem silly, but shooting on a sunny day is kind of crucial.

3. It’s much easier to get the flare when the sun is at a low angle behind your subject (try mid morning or late afternoon).

Alright did you think I was serious about only using a Nikon? I wish that was the case but it’s not. I don’t think Angie or Amy would run this tutorial if that was the case. But trust me...you will look very cool with a Nikon around your neck shooting sun flare.

4. Get your subject between the sun and your camera (create that line of site). This is nothing more than creating a straight line with the sun, the focused subject and the camera. Sometimes you will need to move around until you see the flare.

5. The more expensive glass (lens) you have the more difficult it can be to get sun flare. Try your kit lens, they work really well for shooting flare.

6. Remove your lens hood (at least until you get the hang of it). This will give you more of the potential to capture that sun ray. Once you are a sun flare pro, have fun with the lens hood. I always shoot with a lens hood to protect my lens. Sometimes I will cheat a bit and actually catch the sun flare with the tip of the lens hood.

7. Do not shoot wide open. The more the aperture is open, the more the detail will be lost from the flare. You still might get some flare, but it won’t be as defined. What do I mean by wide open? If your lens can open up to a f1.4, that is wide open. The lens is letting in more light than it would at f22. I tend to go for somewhere in between when I shoot flares (still try to properly expose your subject).

The real secret in shooting sun flares is to move around until you see it. Don’t be afraid get on your knees or climb up on something. Shooting flares can be fun, play around with your settings and try different things to get different looks, see what you come up with.
