Holiday Inspiration from our Community Network!

Fun news!! Angie was contacted by a reporter from her local newspaper who asked if we would mind if they featured the story of I Heart Faces. We were surprised to get such a large write up in the county paper. We’d like to thank Lisa Hlavinka and the Medina Gazette for the lovely write-up they did about the story of how we met and then created I Heart Faces together.

Week 49 - “Pets Only” Winning Photos

This week we veered away from our typical challenges and instead of focusing on a human face….we focused on animal faces instead! It was really difficult to keep from oohing and aahing over the cuteness as we went through all of the entries this week. So many fabulous ones!

It was fun to welcome a Guest “Pet Photographer” Judge this week to choose her favorites from our entries. Here are the beautiful photos that Nicole Mlakar-Livingston chose as our Top Ten:

Nicole wrote: “This was an incredibly hard contest to judge and I just want to thank everyone who entered. There were some amazing images and it was very hard to narrow it down to the 10 best! I picked this shot because I think this is such a great one. The lighting is perfect and I love the texture from the blanket. It's the kind of "pet" shot that speaks more about the pet than just offering up a nice image. Since I'm particularly partial to documentary type imagery, this shot just really tells a beautiful story and it leaves you wanting more.”

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU POST THE LARGEST SIZE POSSIBLE OF YOUR ORIGINAL PHOTO...if our contributors have time, they might be able to save your photo and actually work on it before they leave feedback for you. This is extremely helpful for them.

2) You will need to put our I ♥ Faces button or our special "Constructive Feedback" button in your blog post.

3) Please make it clear to your regular readers that you are asking us to give you Constructive Feedback on your photo. We don't want to upset them when we stop by to do just that and they are wondering why anyone would "critique" or "put down" your photo. :)

4) Let us know what editing program you use for your photos.

5) If you know how to find this information, it'd be wonderful if you could put the EXIF data for your photo in your blog post. (This tells you what your aperture, shutter speed, ISO and focal length were when you took the shot. An example: f/6.3 1/100 sec ISO 100 230 mm)

6) Please let us know what exactly it is that is bothering you about your edited photo. (Is the skin tone off? Does the overall color in the photo just feel too warm? Do you feel like the crop job could be better? etc.) Whatever it is, let the people who visit your post today know what you think the problems are with your photo. That way they will know better how to help you.

7) You need to enter the permalink to your blog post (not the link to the home page of your blog.) If you do not know what a permalink is, PLEASE go to the FAQ's portion of our website to read our tutorial there.

8) Each of our contributors puts a tremendous amount of time into the feedback that they do leave...so be sure to thank them by stopping by their blog sometime today to leave them a comment!

Inspiration: “How To Work With Children” {Part II}

After the first installment of “How to Work with Children...Not Against Them," I kept thinking of other tips on getting good pictures of children. Mostly because I have been doing a personal series where I try to take at least one picture of my daughter every day.

I also got some emails and comments with helpful tips that I didn't include in the first post, so I decided to go ahead and include a part two. And as I was typing this up, I thought of more, so there will definitely be a part three!

Please let me preface by saying that I'm not a professional photographer. I don't have any secrets on being a professional photographer or posing kids or getting the perfect shot. These tips are for the mom (or dad or aunt or grandmother) who just wants to take better pictures of their kids (or nieces and nephews, or grandkids, etc.) - from a mom who takes a lot of pictures of her kid.

6| Don't pose your kids for every single shot. There's nothing wrong with posing, especially if you have a kid who poses well. Smiles upon command. Makes cute faces whenever you ask. But more than likely, you don't have a child like that, so just capture them doing what they do best -- being kids!

7| Don't always shoot head-on. Some of my favorite shots are pictures where she doesn't even know I'm there.

8| Take pictures of kids in their environment. You don't always have to take your child out to a "location" to get great pictures. You can get GREAT pictures in your own backyard or at a local playground or walking around your own neighborhood, because that's where your kids will be most comfortable.

9| Take pictures of everyday moments. If there's one thing people always tell me, it's that I capture the everyday moments of life. I never really set out to do that, but when I think of living with Emma, I don't think of dressing her up and posing her in a field. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE those types of pictures and do take opportunities to do that every once in a while. But the pictures that end up meaning the most to me are pictures that I took while she was playing with her tea set, fingerpainting, walking to the playground, using the potty (hee!) or just going to the library.

In my mind, I can imagine sitting with Emma when she's 16, flipping through pictures and saying, "Man, we sure did love going to the library together when you were younger. Remember that? Playing checkers, picking out books and movies, sitting in the reading circle? Those were good times."

10| Be silly. Act crazy. Make faces. Sing funny songs. Tell jokes. Use weird voices. Don't think ... just be! If you turn taking photos into "work," it's more likely your kid will not do what you want them to do. So just have fun, relax and don't think about getting the perfect shot. If you're child is relaxed and having fun, you WILL get your perfect shot.

WEEK 49 - December 14th - “Pets Only!”

We are going to celebrate our pets this week...no people allowed! The focus of your photos should be on some type of animal (even though we call this Pets Only week, you are more than welcome to enter a photo of any animal of your choice.)

Constructive Feedback Friday

We will be taking a break from Fix-it Friday this week, to do Constructive Feedback Friday instead. This feature is for people to enter a photo that they think is pretty good... they just wish they knew how to make it even better. We will send our team and readers to provide you with some constructive feedback and ideas of how you could improve your photo. Only beginner and amateur photographers can enter a photo - no professionals (their entries will be deleted).

Lauren is a pet loving, crafty, freelance photographer. We have enjoyed her photo entries for a while and wanted to say thanks for being such an awesome fan!

Spread the Love Tour

Our "Sweet Dreams" judges Justin & Mary are going on a “Spread the Love” tour! The workshop is a "Life" workshop in that it isn't specific to photographers, you don't have to be a professional (or even a photographer at all!) to attend. They will cover things like marketing, branding, momentum, creating systems that stick, and also things like building your financial house, taking care of your relationships and taking care of yourself! Sounds like fun! Look for them in a city near you.
