Discovery Channel presents – iGenius: How Steve Jobs Changed The World

Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman of MythBusters fame will pay homage to the late Steve Jobs by hosting a special titled iGenius: How Steve Jobs Changed the World. This one-hour documentary, a Discovery and NBC Peacock Productions collaboration, will include interviews with various people whose lives were greatly impacted by Jobs.

This hour documentary talks briefly about Steve Jobs life – from his early years with Steve Wozniak, starting Apple Computers Co, to his sacking and then returning to Apple after starting NeXt and Pixar. Then came the revolutions – from the Macintosh, to the iPod, iPhone and iPad.

Some of the people interviewed in the documentary includes:

Lee Felsenstein, a founding member of the Homebrew Computer Club
Daniel Kottke, a friend who traveled to India with Jobs and who later become an early Apple employee
John Draper, an engineer who worked with Jobs and Steve Wozniak
NBC Correspondent Tom Brokaw
Joe Nocera of the New York Times
Theoretical physicist Dr. Michio Kaku
Musicians Pete Wentz and Stevie Wonder

An hour is never enough to capture the work that Steve Jobs had done. But at least this gives a quick recap on his life and his work.

The documentary will air in Singapore on Discovery Channel, November 6 Sunday at 10pm.

EpiCentre@Wheelock Place Steve Jobs memorial removed by Apple?

Just a day after we learnt about Steve Jobs’ passing, the folks at EpiCentre@Wheelock Place had set up some space in their store for fans to pen their thoughts, or put up photos or items to remember Steve Jobs. A week passed and there were hundreds of post-it notes, couple of drawings, flowers and even an apple with the sides bitten off.

But on Saturday when we held the Steve Jobs Day – we were met with an empty wall. No trace of it remained. We had intended to take some photos of us in black turtlenecks and jeans as a celebration of his work and how he had changed some of our lives. Those photos were to be taken and sent to rememberingsteve@apple.com – showing Apple that there are fans here in Singapore.

But nope. Zilch.

A representative from EpiCentre, who knew we were popping by, informed us that the boards, together with a video montage that were showing at their store front, were removed upon request from Apple.

We were shocked to say the least. Across the world, many were paying tribute to the Man at various Apple retail stores. From laying flowers, to even putting iPads showing videos of Jobs in action. Yet, a simple cardboard wall with post-it notes and couple of images of Steve Jobs, were removed.

We have sent a note to Apple seeking clarification on this and we hope they can shed some light on this.

iPhone 4S First Weekend Sales Top Four Million

Four Million. This is not pre-order numbers. That is 4 million iPhone 4S that is being used by customers after just THREE days.

Just a comparison:

The original iPhone took 74 days to sell one million sets.
It took 3 days for iPhone 3GS to hit one million.
iPhone 4 top 1.7 million sales after three days.

Wonder where all those naysayers who bitched about iPhone 4S not selling well because it didn’t come with a brand new design…

Other numbers released in the press release from Apple:

more than 25 million customers are already using iOS 5
20 million customers signed up for iCloud

Almost 25 million iOS upgrades in three days. Is that a world record for most OS upgrades in the shortest time? Though there were some hiccups in updates suffered by some, majority of the 25 million iOS upgrades were smooth.

Looks like the North Carolina Data Centre is more than ready to handle the stress.

Can Siri Find Anything in Singapore?

According to Apple, Siri “finds answers for you from the web through sources like Yelp and WolframAlpha.”

Yelp is a site established in 1994 to help find great businesses like dentists, hair stylists and mechanics. Yelp boasts over 21 million user submitted reviews of local businesses – very impressive because they aim to connect you to businesses around you.

This is all great except for one catch.

It doesn’t look like Yelp has a Singapore database. Look closely at their press site and you’ll see a whole list of countries but our little red dot isn’t on it. So unless you live in US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, Spain, Italy or Switzerland, it could mean that Siri would be severely handicapped.

We have asked Apple for a unit to test drive prior to the launch on 28th October, just so we can verify this and also how Siri will understand our accent, but we got the following response:

“Products will not be made available until they are a shipping product in country. We will be in touch when we have further details regarding iPhone 4S review unit availability.”

So how will Siri fare in Singapore? Right now, we’re not entirely certain that Singapore’s units will have the full functionality we had seen in the videos.

Getting iPhone 4S in Singapore (updated)

Putting up this page as a placeholder to update any news from Apple Singapore and our three Telcos about the preorder/purchase of iPhone 4S. Singapore is scheduled to have iPhone 4S from 28 October – so preorder from Telcos should start soon. Purchasing without contract should come at a later date, as practiced by Apple before.

UPDATE (21 October, 9;54pm): It appears Apple store is updated and the iPhone 4S is available to order. This is without a plan, of course.

We’re looking at S$948 for 16GB, S$1088 for 32GB and S$1238 for the new 64GB option. Both black and white models are available. Shipping is 1 to 2 weeks for now.

Head to Apple Singapore Store if you have money to spare.

There seems to be some confusion over at Starhub. First they put up a link from their Mobile page which goes to a registration of interest page, which turned out to be for Business customers only. Next there is a link to the iPhone page which has another link on Services on iPhone which states they are NOT doing both registration of interests NOR preorder of iPhone 4S.

Are you getting one?

Apple has started rolling out pieces of the puzzle that is iOS 5 and iCloud. We will be updating the site as and when these pieces are out for you to download/install.

Creative Technology – Sincere or wanting the last word

Creative Technology bought a full page ad on Straits Times yesterday to pay tribute to Steve Jobs, as seen above.

In it, there were a short paragraph that reads:

Thank you for the great lessons.
Thank you for the great products.
Thank you for bringing a bit of us to the whole world.

Although the ad is classy looking, I find it distasteful that Sim Wong Hoo, took the opportunity to remind everyone that Creative were able to make Apple pay up to US$100 million for a paid-up license to use Creative’s patents in all Apple products.

Nice of you to pay tribute to your competitor who whipped your ass but to add in that last word is just unbecoming of a CEO. Shame on you.

iPhone 4S Pre-Orders Top One Million in First 24 Hours

One million pre-orders taken in the first 24 hours. That’s ONE MILLION iPhone 4S ordered, and the number is increasing every minute.

Competitors must be wondering how disappointing their phones should be to even get 10% of what Apple did on opening day.

Thanks to some of our friends who turned up.

Steve Jobs Day is a worldwide tribute started by his fans on September 23, 2011 as a thank you to a man whose work has impacted so many of our lives. In light of his passing, we hope that Steve Jobs Day will be celebrated as a tribute to his life and the legacy he leaves behind.

On 15 October 2011, please join us at ~~The Promontory @ Marina Bay~~ EpiCentre @ Wheelock Place as we come together to pay our simple tribute to him.

Come dressed in a black turtleneck, jeans and sneakers. If you own an iOS device, put a photograph of your favourite Apple product or Steve Jobs in there. We will have a group photo of everyone who turns up and together with other photographs taken, they will be sent to Apple.

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

I have stared at this screen for hours and couldn’t really find the words to describe the emotions when I learnt about his passing.

And I realised that it wouldn’t be what he want us to feel.

The best way to pay tribute to the life and work of Steve Jobs, is that if you own a Mac, or an iPhone or iPad, make full use of it. We don’t need to create something that will change the world like he did, but do something.

Type your next masterpiece, or simply clear up that long awaited To-Do list. Call up a friend or email a photo to your family.

He had spent his life creating tools for us to improve our lives so make full use of them.
