Obama phones in Berlin Wall speech, praises himself (or Himself)

In between whatever he was so busy with, President Obama still managed to find time to phone in a speech from an undisclosed part of the White House on the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. But you can bet he won’t be too busy to pick up his Nobel Peace Prize in person.

During his prerecorded speech, President Obama made this self-referential observation, “Few would have foreseen … that a united Germany would be led by a woman from Brandenburg or that their American ally would be led by a man of African descent. But human destiny is what human beings make of it.”

Few would have also foreseen how the One would deftly work in a tribute to Himself during his tribute to the fall of the Wall. However, Obama’s Teleprompter somehow forgot to mention Communism, the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin, Nikita Khrushchev, Mikhail Gorbachev, Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, Lech Walesa or Pope John Paul.

In Obama’s telling, the Wall just got built by itself, and was mysteriously torn down one day for no apparent reason.

When is a tax not a tax? When it’s an interest-free loan.

Californians, don’t you worry about your state being bankrupt. Rest assured that your elected representatives in Sacramento are working tirelessly to spread the poverty around and make sure the entire citizenry is equally bereft.

If you work in California you may want to do a quick paycheck comparison and check this week’s pay stub against last week’s. Californians are beginning November with a 10% increase in their paycheck withholding.

The LA Times reassuringly reports that “Technically, it’s not a tax increase,” it’s “part of a bundle of budget patches.” So what does that mean? Lawmakers aren’t exactly sure, they just know they need the extra cash.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Sacramento’s Democrat legislature and the RINO Governator are trying to close a “gaping budget deficit, now estimated to be $7 billion this year and reach as high as $20 billion next.”

Will this little “loan” close the deficit? Well, no. “The extra withholding tax will reduce Californians’ take-home pay by about $1.7 billion for the year. But the lawmakers say this isn’t a tax increase. OK, how about calling it a compulsory interest-free loan from taxpayers to the state?”

The Journal also questions the reliability of the Golden State’s representatives to guard the gold, as it were. “And we almost hate to ask: What happens come April if the state doesn’t have enough money to pay the tax refunds it owes its citizens? Will taxpayers get IOUs the way state contractors did last year when Sacramento ran out of money?”

Have the pols in Sacramento thought that far ahead? We’re not going to hazard a prediction. But if we can achieve Universal Heath Care For All and a smaller carbon footprint by next year, then by god, whatever happens to taxpayers is going to be worth it.

Bad news for global warming fanatics: Greenland’s icecap is getting thicker

How could this be? How is it possible? We’re ruined.

Based on Al Gore’s assurances that the Greenland icecap was melting and that sea levels were rising, we invested all our spare cash in future beachfront property in South Dakota.

The Australian Broadcasting Company reports the story of our personal economic doom and the current shoreline’s salvation:

Greenland’s icecap has thickened slightly in recent years despite concerns that it is thawing out due to global warming, says an international team of scientists.

A team led by Professor Ola Johannessen, at the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center in Norway, report their findings online ahead of print publication in the journal Science.

The 3,000-metre thick Greenland icecap is a key concern in debates about climate change because a total melt would raise world sea levels by about 7 metres. And a runaway thaw might slow the Gulf Stream that keeps the North Atlantic region warm.

Glaciers at sea level have been retreating fast because of a warming climate, making many other scientists believe the entire icecap is thinning. But satellite measurements showed that more snowfall is falling and thickening the icecap, especially at high altitudes, say Johannessen and team.

President Obama: “No healthcare insurance? Go to jail. Go directly to jail. Do not pass go.”

President Obama is playing Monopoly again. Except this time it’s with 1/6 of the American economy.

During an interview with ABC News’ Jake Tapper, the President ‘fessed up and said people who try to get a “free ride” the health care system deserve to be penalized. Of course, by “free ride” he meant those who don’t want to buy insurance.

Sure, he stopped short of calling for jail time, but his hesitance to do so is undoubtedly borne out of an intense desire to avoid yet another conservative firestorm.

“What I think is appropriate,” Obama said, “is that in the same way that everybody has to get auto insurance and if you don’t, you’re subject to some penalty, that in this situation, if you have the ability to buy insurance, it’s affordable and you choose not to do so, forcing you and me and everybody else to subsidize you, you know, there’s a thousand dollar hidden tax that families all across America are — are burdened by because of the fact that people don’t have health insurance, you know, there’s nothing wrong with a penalty.”

The only problem with Obama’s version of Monopoly (let’s call it “Obamanopoly”) is that he’s added one new rule:

If he runs out of money, he just takes a little from all the other players.

Sweet, creamy goodness for Pelosi. Calorie counting for you

The current issue of New York magazine includes this strange snippet about the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi:

Suddenly, a door opens, and a beaming servant zooms to Pelosi’s side, stooping to show her the contents of his platter: a delicate bowl, piled high with two luscious scoops of dark-chocolate ice cream.

She lets out something you’ve never heard from her before, at least not on TV: a tremendously long and high-pitched giggle, like one that would come from a girl about a half-century younger. “Hee-hee-hee-hee,” she goes, pushing her chin to the sky. “Oh, no, Michael,” she says, “I don’t want that now. Later, later!”

Chocolate ice cream is the staple of Pelosi’s diet: She doesn’t cook herself, so except for a salad for lunch and whatever an aide hands her for dinner, that’s what she eats. “I think that’s the first time she’s ever turned it down,” whispers her personal assistant, later. “The other day, she came in at 8:45 a.m. carrying a pint of Häagen-Dazs with an inch left in it–she’d eaten the whole thing on the way in. She handed it off to Michael, and then two hours later, she said, ‘Where’s that ice cream? Can I eat the rest of that?’”

Pelosi, of course, is the driving force behind the bloated, $3 trillion Nanny State healthcare bill that squeaked by in the House of Representatives late Saturday night.

Nation’s Restaurant News tells the flip side of Pelosi’s healthcare coin:

The 1,990-page bill outlines general nutrient-labeling requirements for restaurants and retail establishments that are part of a chain with 20 or more outlets.

Those restaurants affected would be required to prominently post calorie counts for standard items on menus and menu boards as well as calories per serving for each item on a buffet, salad bar, cafeteria line or self-service display…

Restaurateurs also would be required to post a brief statement regarding daily caloric intake “designed to enable the public to understand, in the context of a total daily diet, the significance of the nutrition information that is provided.”

Sweet, sugary goodness for Pelosi. Calorie counting for you.

Congratulations, Democrats. Thanks to you, we’ve leapfrogged over the Nanny State and gone directly to Nancy State.

Obama says “the world is a community of nations with more in common than divides us.” Americans divided on the issue.

How much do you have in common with these Ukrainian peasants

One of President Obama’s most grating platitudes is the one that says that the world is a community of nations with more in common than that which divides us. Blah-blah-blah.

Chalk up another Obama-ism that the American people aren’t buying. At least that’s what a new Rasmussen Reports poll says:

But just 32% of U.S. voters agree with the idea that the world is a community of nations, more alike than different in outlook and interest. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 44% disagree and 24% are not sure.

A solid plurality of Democrats (47%) share Obama’s global perspective, but 60% of Republicans and 49% of voters of voters not affiliated with either party don’t think the president’s right.

You really can’t blame the American people for blowing off the President on this one. The concept sounds like it was written by a United Nations bureaucrat in search of a million dollar grant. The words sound noble as well as Nobel, but they’re completely empty. It’s just another case of Obama ignoring – or forgetting – America’s exceptionalism.

What the hell do we have in common with Saudi Arabia other than their oil? With China other than their cheap labor? With Tonga other than, well, we don’t know what the hell we have in common with Tonga? Foreign aid, maybe.

Feuding Republicans: The Hatfield and McCoysare at it again

Yup, those redneck Republicans are at it again. After 8 years of peaceful coexistence, the conservative and liberal wings of the GOP are cleaning their guns and pointing them at each other.

At least that’s what the liberal media would have you believe as evidenced by the New York Times report:

“Republicans emerged from Tuesday’s elections energized by victories in Virginia and New Jersey, but their leaders immediately began maneuvering to avoid a prolonged battle with conservative activists over what the party stands for and how to regain power.

Yet throughout the day after, Wednesday, Republicans grappled with the disappointing outcome of a special election for what had been a reliably Republican House seat in upstate New York. That contest became a battleground between the party establishment and a conservative insurgency demanding more ideological purity from candidates.”

Just keep one thing in mind when you read these stories from the biased liberal media:

The same people who said Iraq was in the middle of a civil war last year are saying the Republican Party is in the middle of a civil war this year. In Las Vegas, this is what’s known as doubling down when you’re holding six.

Our money is on the “conservative insurgency.”
