Along other german and international blogs and magazines we spent 3 days in the city and got an exclusive insight into the EXPO 1: New York exhibition and the VW Dome 2 at Rockaway Beach. The project is a co-operation between Volkswagen Group of America, MoMA and MoMA PS1.

Klaus Biesenbach, director of MoMA PS1 curated the exhibition as a festival, creating a ‘perfect museum’ that evolves around one main topic: sustainability. The exhibition consists of different elements located in various parts of the town, including ‘EXPO School’, the ‘EXPO Colony’ and an ‘EXPO Cinema’ as well as different video games, films, YouTube clips, the VW Dome 2 and the pretty fascinating Rain Room by ‘rAndom international’. The exhibition aims to make art experiencable, therefore you can take a walk through the Rain Room or visit the architectural project ‘EXPO Colony’. The project invites you to learn, understand and to participate actively. Different artists, such as Joseph Beuys, Olafur Eliasson, Pierre Huyghe, Jacob Kassay or Zoe Leonard created visions of the future which are on display at the exhibition ‘Dark Optimism’ at MoMA PS1. At the ‘EXPO School’ you can listen to diverse speculations about coming scenarios from artists, authors, technologists, ecologists and many more. The ‘EXPO Cinema’ reflects our way of consuming films and videos as well as games on a daily basis from various devices. The VW Dome2 is a temporary, geodetic dome that serves as a meeting point to discuss creative concepts for the urban regeneration of the distroyed area around Rockaway Beach. Watch the video to get an impression of how we experienced the opening event of the EXPO 1: New York or click here for further infos.

In addition to his penchant for realism, Swiss artist Till Rabus has a keen eye for arranging inanimate objects in provoking ways. The artist combines these two skills in his strange still lifes, where ordinary, discarded objects are found in mysterious compositions that play with symmetry and saturated colors. Rabus eradicates any signs of human presence in his paintings, as if these objects ended up in these orderly arrangements out of their own free will. Yet these are objects left behind from human consumption, inviting a dialogue about the wastefulness of consumer culture. In his latest work, the artist investigates the human figure, creating structures from writhing body parts.

Searching for a narrative constructed only by the randomness of the encounter, photographer Ruben Brulat has traveled from Europe to Asia by land only, through Iraq, Iran, on-to Afghanistan, Tibet until Indonesia, Japan and Mongolia to complete his latest works titled ‘Paths’. During this year of extensive travelling he invited strangers to romp naked across the exotic landscapes in which they found themselves. Stopping passers-by and asking for their participation Ruben amassed a series of images and stories of individuals and couples embracing the landscape with their whole bodies. Performing sometimes in welcoming sand, sometimes in the harsh snow, the series of images capture a concurrence between man and nature.

This ‘friendly alien’ has rapidly become a bridge between the historic and the modern, and plays an important role to the city of Graz as a center for the arts. The Kunsthaus provides 2,500 square meters of generously arranged space for changing contemporary art exhibitions, functions, and events. The amorphous form of the blue bubble blends in the heritage-protected part of the building 1,288 semitransparent acrylic glass panels have been used to create the bubble. While the glazed outer skin takes an important mediating role, it also generates power through integrated photovoltaic units. The Berlin designers realities:united used 930 computercon trolled light sources located under the acrylic skin to create a display fortyfive meters wide and twenty meters high that enables the museum to communicate with its environment.

This project is part of the exhibition Culture:City, that is asking questions about the impact of art and culture on cities and their architecture. Visit the exhibition until Sunday, 26th of May 2013 at Hanseatenweg 10, 10557 Berlin. On Saturday they will open their doors until 24h. Afterwards, the exhibits will be on display at the ‘Kunsthaus Graz’ from 28.06.-13.10.2013.

Exploring mechanical rhythm and flow in prepared systems, his installations incorporate commonplace industrial objects. In an obsessive display of simple and functional materials, these works articulate a tension between the orderly patterns of Modernism and the chaotic forces of life. Carrying an emotional depth, the acoustic hum of natural phenomena in Zimoun’s minimalist constructions effortlessly reverberates. Zimoun’s sound sculptures and architectural interventions combine visual, sonic, and spatial elements. He’s using simple mechanical systems to transform and activate the space.

This project is located on Föhr, a small island in the North Sea. In the village of Alkersum, inside a former hay storage of a traditional farmhouse, architect Karin Matz and Francesco Di Gregorio redefined the whole space with a wood structure covered by 3.200 tiles, each with a hand-made circular hole, 500 mt of polypropylene blue rope and treated pine wood.

The space as been re-opened by taking down all dividing walls except for the ones surrounding the bathroom. A new volume is added which becomes the central wall going through and unifying the space. It is covered in ceramic tile with a simple pattern given by the blue cement holding them. Light is brought through the reflective ceramics and the translucent doors. Threads frame the staircase creating a transparent threshold. The bedrooms are dark bed-boxes, private like nests. The architects say: ‘Often you only realize after what it is that you have done; we returned in the summer and we realize what we had build. A stranded ship.’

Combining high-power laser projectors, a dynamic point cloud and the interactions of its viewers, WHITEvoid created a vivid organic art experience. The piece seems to have a liquid surface transmuting into vapor, seemingly random molecules forming an organized cloud and sensing the presence of life around the arrangement. Shaped by human interactions, the molecules begin to swarm – aggregating and accumulating. They are constantly in motion, reacting and adapting with the people who seek to engage with the installation. Multiple 3D camera tracking systems analyze the presence of the visitors, their positions and posture. All joints of the human body are recognized and constantly tracked by the systems. This enables precise three-dimensional interactions with the graphics and elements of the cloud.

The Serbian photographer cleverly frames with an unusual perspective everyday life moments, which are trying to reveal some kind of truth about the world. In these series she tends to provoke emotional exaggerations to the viewer through metaphorical visual narratives. Finally, she enjoys putting photographs together into intimate stories on her website.
