How would you change Pentax’s K-7 DSLR?

Pentax may not be the first name you think of when scouting a new DSLR, but it’s certainly closer to the top now than it was prior to the K-7’s release. The semi-pro cam saw positive review after positive review flow in, giving even the Nikon and Canon faithful reason to pay attention. At right under $1,300 for just the body it didn’t come cheap, though the high-def movie capture mode, ability to snap HDR shots natively and 14.6 megapixel sensor help to justify the MSRP somewhat. What we’re really after here are your thoughts; for those that bought in, have you been pleased? Is the low-light performance sufficient? Is the autofocus snappy enough for your tastes? Or more importantly, how happy are your clients with the results? are all yours, so get to it!

Xbox’s Aaron Greenberg: Hulu on 360 like "asking out a really hot chick on a date"

Hey, our main dudes over at Joystiq sat down with Xbox’s Aaron Greenberg recently, and there are some great bits of info in the interview. Aaron says the big Xbox price cut has been planned for months, so it’s “just a coincidence” that it happened right on top of the PS3 Slim — and he also says he’s an avid Joystiq reader, so if Redmond had wanted to get the jump on Sony, they’d have been prepared. Other nuggets: the $99 WiFi adapter isn’t coming down in price, the Netflix relationship is going well, and getting Hulu or Amazon Unbox on the 360 is like “asking out a really hot chick on a date, they don’t all say yes.” Yeah, it’s a pretty great interview — hit the link for the whole thing.

Xbox 360 ‘Super Elite’ with 250GB HDD glimpsed in South African retail ad

So much for secrecy. South African Xbox 360 distributor Comztek has told local gaming news site XboxGaming.co.za that the a 250GB “Super Elite” model is due there in October. Additionally, the Forza 3 bundle we saw heading to Germany is also en route to SA, retailing for R4,999 (US $646), or around the same price as the Elite before its recent global price cut. South African retailer BT Games has apparently also posted a flier in honor of the launch, offering a R500 discount on the Super Elite with the trade-in of a slimline PlayStation 2. Let’s hope the folks in Redmond have as much of a sense of humor about leaks as Sony does.

We last left off on the cyberpunk streets of LA in Strange Days. This week, in honor of the loss of the man behind so many 1980’s icons, Movie Gadget Friday is paying homage to filmmaker John Hughes with a look into the 1985 cult-classic Weird Science. Tapping into the geek-fiction fantasies of most tinkering teenagers, real-life gadget specs are stretched to surreal capabilities to create the ultimate female bombshell. It’s without surprise that the character’s name, Lisa, was inspired by the Apple Lisa, Apple’s first GUI computer.

PS3 Slim already sold out at many a retail store

The fine folks at GameSpot called around in San Francisco to find that many of their local GameStops and Best Buys have been selling the PS3 Slim, but some have already sold out of their first shipments. Our own calls to a few New York GameStops showed that they’d sold out of their first shipments as well (so much for that September 1 ship date, huh?) and were expecting their next shipment early next week. We also know plenty of folks who’ve had no trouble scoring one online, but who knows how long that supply will last. How about you, any luck tracking down this not-so-elusive console? Personally, we’re still waiting on the go-ahead from our main man Kevin Butler to believe any of this is true.

Hitachi builds 3mm-thick vein scanner in its Transylvanian lair

Hitachi has always been hot for vein authentication modules, and its latest iteration takes the whole tech down to just three millimeters in thickness. Given that the current generation requires 23.5mm (nearly an inch) of space to operate in, it’s easy to see why your netbook doesn’t have one, but Hitachi hopes that’s all about to change. Using a CMOS sensor to take almost instant readings, the vein scanner is deadly accurate — the chances of it authorizing the wrong person are a million to one. Volume production is expected within two years, meaning that by 2011 you’ll finally have a reliable way to keep your parents out of your “Misc” data folders.

Altec Lansing Mix iMT800 really wants to be a boombox, isn’t

Gaze upon Altec Lansing’s history of iPod / iPhone docks, and you shall see no hint, not even the subtle off-white coloring of an implication, that the company would go this boombastic with its latest offering. The Mix iMT800 might not quite have the necessary panache to compete with the Lasonic i931, but it still talks a good fight. With a 5.25-inch side-firing subwoofer, it should live up to its boast of “towering volume,” while a pair of useful 3.5mm line inputs will allow you to jack in non-Apple players too. We’ve got a couple more images after the break, including the totally rad remote and mean-looking woofer, and if you like what you see, they’re available now for $299.

iPhone coming to China Unicom in Q4 — it’s official

And now it’s official: China Unicom has struck a 3-year exclusive deal to finally bring the iPhone to China’s massive subscriber-base potential. The carrier will offer two different “3G iPhones” to its 141 million subscribers that it will buy wholesale from Apple — no revenue sharing deal here kids. Neither Apple nor China Unicom will reveal specs on the phones (WiFi?) or pricing. So that’s it, short and sweet after what feels like years of rumors. But really, unless you live in China and subscribe to China Unicom what else is there to know?
