In the last decade the South Africa based organisation, Khanya-aicdd, has taken the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach (SLA) and applied, implemented and contextualised it across Africa. For example, Khanya have taken the so-called ‘Policies, Institutions and Processes’ (PIPs) of the DFID SL Framework and distilled six governance indicators at micro, meso and macro levels

At an October 2008 seminar at the Institute of Development Studies, in the UK, participants discussed whether and how Sustainable Livelihoods Approaches (SLA) could be revitalised and returned to the forefront of development approaches. The seminar was hosted by the Livelihoods Connect Network

Over the last decade a number of approaches to poverty reduction have been fashionable. These include rights-based approaches (RBA), the governance approach, the microfinance approach, and sustainable livelihoods approaches (SLA). All promised more than they delivered but it was SLA that sunk from popularity most quickly

Global AIDS policy has focused on treatment and prevention amongst adults. International development strategies have focused on poverty reduction and economic growth. New debates – such as those over whether money should be invested in dedicated HIV and AIDS programmes or general health systems - continue to neglect children as a focus.

Children are vulnerable in different ways to adults. Mainstream social protection programmes must therefore take account of their differing needs. Recognising how deprivation and poverty are transmitted across generations and across time requires programmes to take a long-term view, tackling multiple deprivations through protective as well as transformative ways

But the European policy is mostly driven by the relationships prevailing among the European Union’s main decision-making institutions. African security issues have provoked competition between the different member states and European institutions eager to play the role of ‘lead agency’]

A series of flawed elections, the impunity of the elite in power, a weak and disorganised political class, and a non-functional administrative state culminated in a popular insurrection in January and February 2007.
