I didn’t get a picture of any of the many dolphins that swam and jumped around our boat, but you can see the sea lions on the buoy.

Sorry it has taken me a week to post the rest of the photos I took during IALLT2011. These pictures are from the Henderson Plenary session, and then the cocktail reception and banquet, complete with passing of the Talking Stick to the next conference host. You’ll see we had a photo booth at the banquet which was a blast! I’ll be sending a link to those pictures out to all IALLT2011 attendees very soon.

Opening Reception

We had a great turnout for tonight’s reception, and it looked to me like everyone had a good time. Thanks everyone for coming. See you tomorrow!

The exhibit hall will open at 8am in Pacific Ballroom D, and the welcome and keynote begin at 9:00 in Doheny B/C/D in the Student Center.

IALLT2011 is Underway!

Today is the second day of pre-conference workshops, we have been checking people in and showing them around campus. It’s so great to see everyone and to meet the people I’ve been corresponding with for months. Tomorrow morning the exhibit hall will open and we’ll have our keynote presentation from Mary Ann Lyman-Hager and some of her staff from LARC at San Diego State University.

Dorm reservation deadline

Getting the most out of the conference

Here’s a link to a nice article from Converge Magazine about how to get the most out of going to a conference, with examples from 3 different educators. Converge

One of the suggestions is to follow along on Twitter, using the conference hashtag. IALLT2011 has a Twitter account which you can follow for official news and announcements (@iallt2011), and we have already established the #iallt2011 hashtag. I hope you’ll use some or all of the suggestions in the article to get the most out of your experience at IALLT2011.

Ridesharing to IALLT2011

I have been contacted by someone coming to IALLT2011 who is flying into Long Beach (LGB) and is interested in talking with others who may want to share a ride from Long Beach to Irvine.

For anyone arriving for IALLT2011 anywhere other than John Wayne airport (SNA), whether by train or bus or car, if you want to meet up with others to share transportation costs, a great way to connect is through Twitter. Just use the #iallt2011 and #rideshare hashtags, so anyone searching on both of those terms will be able to find each other. You can add other hashtags for whichever area airport you’ll fly into.

Around the World in 80 Meals

One of the best things about living in Orange County (in addition to the climate and proximity to the beach) is the diversity of dining options.

What do you feel like eating tonight? Malaysian? No problem! Peruvian? We’ve got it.

The city of Irvine itself has some great Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese) and Middle Eastern (primarily Persian) markets and restaurants. One of the closest option to campus is Wholesome Choice, located at Culver and Michelson. A five minute drive or short bus ride from UCI, the food court inside of this Middle Eastern market provides a variety of interesting culinary options, including Lebanese and Thai. Read this article from the Orange County Register or peruse their online menu.

Sometimes the best food is found in out-of-the-way places, such as with these fish and chips in a food court near the airport.

Orange County is also home to a great selection of gourmet food trucks, including Argentinian taco truck, Piaggio on Wheels, vegan Seabirds, Greek food at Louks To Go, and many others. Follow their travels online at Roaming Hunger.

Of course, you also can’t go wrong eating at iconic Southern California burger joints like In N Out (conveniently located across the street from UCI), or Ruby’s (especially those located at the end of the piers in Newport Beach and Huntington Beach).
