How to Jailbreak Apple TV 2G on iOS 4.2.1 Untethered with GreenPois0n RC6 [Guide]

Chronic Dev Team has finally released GreenPois0n RC6 which brings full support for untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak on Apple TV 2G.

Everything else remains the same. If you have already jailbroken your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with GreenPois0n RC5, there is no need to re-run the jailbreak. But in case you wish to, simply re-run it over your existing GreenPois0n RC5 untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak and you are good to go!

The following guide will help you jailbreak Apple TV 2G, untethered on iOS 4.2.1 using GreenPois0n RC6.

Step 1: Download GreenPois0n from the link given below. Run it, and click “Yes” when it prompts for jailbreaking Apple TV.

Step 2: Connect Apple TV 2G to your computer using micro-USB cable and click on “Prepare to Jailbreak (DFU)” as seen in the screenshot below.

Step 3: Now follow the following onscreen instructions to enter DFU mode:

Plug Apple TV in to USB (7 seconds)
Plug in power adapter (3 seconds)
Press and hold MENU and PLAY/PAUSE (7 seconds)
Release both buttons

Step 4: GreenPois0n will now start “Jailbreaking” Apple TV 2G untethered on 4.2.1. The process will take around 3 to 4 minutes to complete.

Step 5: Your Apple TV should now be successfully jailbroken untethered on iOS 4.2.1. Once done, unplug it from your computer and connect it to your TV again. Navigate to “greenpois0n” menu and select “Inject Software” option to install Cydia package.

LastApp Enables Fast Apps Switching in iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

It is quite common to switch from one running app to another by tapping on Alt + Tab buttons on Windows PC and if you wonder how you are able to do that quickly on your iPhone, then the simple tweak from BigBoss repo could be the right option for you. Named as LastApp, it enables users to switch between two apps quickly, making your usage on iOS devices much more effective than previous.

Assuming that you have already jailbreak your iPhone, just head over to Cydia and under ‘Search’, key in ‘LastApp’ will list down the respective app ready for download.
Download and install the app and wait for Springboard restart for completion.
Once done, go to ‘Settings’ -> Activator settings -> In Application and you can pick whichever gesture or method you like to toggle the switching between two apps. For instance, users can choose to shake the device, double press Home button, short hold sleep button to toggle between current and last app depending on own preference.

This is no doubt a great tweak especially when you always need to switch between two apps that you frequently used. LastApp is currently available in Cydia (under BigBoss repo) for free download and do grab one and try it out yourself.

Jailbreak Verizon iPhone 4 on iOS 4.2.6 with GreenPois0n [Video Guide]

So as it turned out, the Verizon iPhone 4 is vulnerable to Limera1n bootrom based exploit, and untethered GreenPois0n kernel based exploit which makes it possible to jailbreak on iOS 4.2.6, untethered using GreenPois0n RC5.4.

The following instructions will help you jailbreak your CDMA based iPhone 4 untethered on Verizon using the latest version of GreenPois0n.

Step 1: Download GreenPois0n from the link given below.

Step 2: Connect your Verizon CDMA iPhone 4 via USB to your computer and click on “Jailbreak” as seen in the screenshot below.

Step 3: Now follow the following onscreen instructions to enter DFU mode:

Press and hold the sleep button for 2 seconds
Continue holding sleep; press and hold home for 10 seconds.
Release sleep button; continue holding home for 15 seconds.

Step 4: GreenPois0n will now start “Jailbreaking” your iPhone, untethered on 4.2.6.

Step 5: Your iPhone should now be successfully jailbroken on iOS 4.2.6. Now start “Loader” found on the homescreen and install Cydia.

This is it! You are done !

Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone 4, 3GS Untethered with PwnageTool and Unlock with Ultrasn0w [How to Guide]

iPhone developer and hacker Nadeem97 has released PwnageTool bundles which can jailbreakiPhone 4 and 3GS untethered on iOS 4.2.1, in the process preserves the old 01.59.00 baseband for iPhone 4 and 05.13.04 baseband for iPhone 3GS so that you can unlock with the existing version of Ultrasn0w.

Step 1: Download untethered PwnageTool bundle for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS from here. Extract the .zip folder, in there you will find two .bundle files, info.plist and some other files.

Step 2: Download PwnageTool 4.1.3 and copy it to your desktop. Right click, and then click on “Show Package Contents” as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 3: Navigate to Contents/Resources/FirmwareBundles/ and pasteiPhone3,1_4.2.1_8C148.bundle for iPhone 4, or iPhone2,1_4.2.1_8C148a.bundle for iPhone 3GS in this location.

Step 4: Now navigate to Contents/Resources/CustomPackages/CydiaInstaller.bundle/ and here copy the info.plist file and then simply close this folder.

Step 5: Download iOS 4.2.1 for iPhone 4 or 3GS. Move this IPSW file to your desktop.

Step 6: Start PwnageTool in “Expert mode” and select your device:

Step 7: Browse for iOS 4.2.1 firmware for your device.

Step 8: Now before proceeding with the create-the-bundle process, make sure “Activate the Phone” option is unchecked under “General”, and “Cydia Installer” package is selected under “Cydia Packages” option. Once done, select “Build” to start creating custom 4.2.1 firmware file:

Step 9: PwnageTool will now create the custom .ipsw file for your iPhone which will be jailbroken.

Step 10: Now follow the following steps to enter DFU mode:

Hold Power and Home buttons for 10 seconds
Now release the Power button but continue holding the Home button for 10 more seconds
You device should now be in DFU mode

Step 11: Start iTunes, click on your iOS device icon from the sidebar in iTunes. Now press and hold left “alt” (option) button on Mac, or Left “Shift” button if you are on Windows on the keyboard and then click on “Restore” (Not “Update” or “Check for Update”) button in the iTunes and then release this button.

This will make iTunes prompt you to select the location for your custom firmware 4.2.1 file. Select the required custom .ipsw file and click on “Open”.

Step 12: Now sit back and enjoy as iTunes does the rest for you. This will involve a series of automated steps. Be patient at this stage and don’t do anything silly. Just wait while iTunes installs firmware 4.2.1 on your iPhone. Your iOS device screen at this point will be showing a progress bar indicating installation progress. After the installation is done, your iPhone will restart automatically and you should now have a fully jailbroken iPhone 4 or 3GS, untethered on iOS 4.2.1.

Step 13: Once you have jailbroken your iPhone 4 or 3GS, you can safely unlock it on iOS 4.2.1 (on 01.59.00 baseband for iPhone 4 and 05.13.04 baseband for iPhone 3GS) using Ultrasn0w 1.2.

How To Enable or Disable Animated Boot Logo in GreenPois0n RC5

With Chronic Dev Team releasing GreenPois0n RC5 yesterday much was made of the inclusion of the option to add a custom animated boot logo. That’s all well and dandy, other than the fact it doesn’t entirely work.

This is where iPhoneItalia comes in! Thanks to the folks in Italy, we now have a guide to enabling the magic animations, and it’s oh-so-simple.

Step 1: Jailbreak your 4.2.1 iDevice using GreenPois0n RC5, step by step guide for which can be found here.

Step 2: Download a file called “Animate” from here.

Step 3: SSH into your device and place the aforementioned file in /usr/bin/.

Step 4: Change the file’s permissions to 755 and reboot.

Now the animated boot logo is switched on. To deactivate it, simply remove the Animate file via SSH and reboot again.

Simple.

The ability to add your own custom boot logos functionality will be available soon via another update to GreenPois0n RC5.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 4 (1.59.00 Baseband) Untethered on 4.2.1 with GreenPois0n RC5 and Unlock with Ultrasn0w

The following instructions will help iPhone 4 unlockers to update to iOS 4.2.1 while keeping the old 1.59.00 baseband, jailbreak it untethered with GreenPois0n RC5, and then unlock it with Ultrasn0w.

NOTE: This guide is meant for iPhone 4 only.

Step 1: Download the latest version of TinyUmbrella from here.

Step 2: Start TinyUmbrella, and then click on “Start TSS Server”.

Step 3: Start iTunes, Connect your iPhone 4 with your computer. Click on your iOS device icon from the sidebar in iTunes. Now press and hold left “alt” (option) button on Mac, or Left “Shift” button if you are on Windows on the keyboard and then click on “Restore” (Not “Update” or “Check for Update”) button in the iTunes and then release this button.

This will make iTunes prompt you to select the location for your iOS 4.2.1 firmware file. Select this ipsw file and click on “Open” to restore your iPhone.

Step 4: Now at some point while restoring to iOS 4.2.1, iTunes will throw 1013 error at you. This is normal, just ignore this error as the firmware has already been successfully installed on the device without the upgraded baseband.

iOS 4.2.6 for Verizon iPhone 4 Now Available for Download

Apple has posted iOS 4.2.6 for Verizon iPhone 4 ahead of its scheduled launch date, that is on February 10th, 2011.

The firmware file weighs around 652mb in size, and has build number 8E200. iPhone3,3 indication identification number for Verizon’s CDMA iPhone 4.

The key difference between iOS 4.2.6 and iOS 4.2.1 for the current GSM iPhone 4 is the “Personal Hotspot” feature, which will be available for GSM iPhones starting with iOS 4.3.

New iPhone Jailbreak Theme – Windows Phone 7 Goodness, None Of The Badness

Windows Phone 7 is the new kid on the block and nobody can deny it’s one pretty-looking operating system. Now iPhone users can also join in the tile goodness thanks to a new jailbreak theme.

Installation instructions are posted below:

Requirements:

The iPhone must be jailbroken with Cydia installed

It requires an internet connection (preferably Wi-Fi)

GUIDE:

Launch Cydia and install Backboard (free)

Backboard created within a backup of your current theme. You can do this by pushing the "+" at the bottom left of the app.

Now with your iPhone, click on the link below, or write it by hand navigation bar in safari:

" backboard: / / http://wyndrepo.googlecode.com/files/OS7Beta.zip "

Press "Yes" and wait for the download to finish. This may take several minutes depending on your internet connection.

Select the theme from the board OS7

Press install and wait for the automatic Respring iPhone.

CleanStatus Tweaks And Hides Status Icons On iPhones

Wanted to have an ability to customize the appearance of status bar of your iPhone? Now with a new tweak named as CleanStatus from Cydia, users will be able to clean or tweak them based on own preference, freeing up some limited space that you have on iOS devices.

For the start, just head over to Cydia (assuming that you already have your iPhone jailbroken).

On the main screen, tap on ‘Search’ and key in ‘CleanStatus’ and start the searching.
You will notice the utility appeared in the list and tap on ‘Install’ to install the app into your iOS devices.

By now, you should be able to find a new configuration with the name of ‘CleanStatus’ under Settings for toggling selections. For instances, under the setting menu, there are Clock/Date, Signal Strength, Data Network, Carrier Name, Battery Performance, Rotation Lock and many more and simply toggle the desired one will activate the respective status icon for viewing. Take note that toggling ON will disable the icon whereas OFF will enable the icon.

While it doesn’t seem to help users much except customizing the appearance of your iOS devices’ status bar, but this is no doubt a simple tweak that can make your iOS devices look different from the rest. CleanStatus is available for free download under Cydia from ModMyi,com so do grab one to hide up to 19 different icons on your iOS devices.

RecoveryGuard Prevents iOS Devices Into DFU Mode and Updates Accidentally

If you are owning a jailbroken iPhone and worry about accidentally OS upgrade when connecting to iTunes that cause unnecessary trouble, here is a simple tweak from Cydia that can prevent it. By having this little tweak in your iOS devices it will fool the iTunes that you always have the latest version of iOS so that it won’t prompt you for OS upgrade from time to time. More importantly, it will block iTunes from being able to put your iOS devices into recovery mode so that there is no way to upgrade the OS with any accidentally press on Upgrade or Restore button in iTunes.

What you need to do is simple, just follow below steps to install the tweak and you are done:

Launch Cydia (assuming that you already have your IOS devices jailbroken) and tap on ‘Sources’.
Tap on ‘Edit’ -> ‘Add’ and key in http://cydia.pushfix.info as a new source for RecoveryGuard.
Then go to ‘Search’, key in ‘Recovery Guard’ and it will list down the respective tweak ready for download.
Just download it and you are ready to use.

This is particularly useful if you are worry about the update to latest IOS that still doesn’t have jailbroken solution, or when the update usually causes the basebase to be updated that ended up in locked baseband unintentionally. iPhone Serial Number Secret (Decode Color, Size, Production Year and Week)

Each and every iPhone(in fact most products) manufactured, sold or yet to be sold, has a serial number printed on the box and implanted on the chip of iPhone, which can be viewed from Settings app -> General -> About. The serial number does contain some information about the type, color, the year and weak of production or manufacturing of the iPhone and more.

Here’s how to decode the hardware information of the iPhone from the serial number. Note that serial number should not be confused with IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) which is unique identifier for GSM, WCDMA, and iDEN mobile phones. Serial number of iPhone can be changed by Apple, especially when during refurbishing.

Typically, the serial number of iPhone is in the following format:

AABCCDDDEEF

For example, 88025xxxA4T, where the serial information can be decoded as following:

AA = Factory and Machine ID
B = Year of Manufacturing (9 is 2009/2019, 0 is 2010/2020, 1 is 2011 and so on)
CC = Production Week (01 is week 1 of B, 11 is week 11 of B and so on)
DDD = Unique Identifier
EE = Color (A4=black)
F = size (S=16GB, T=32GB)

The factory code does indicates which factory produces the smartphone, and as almost all iPhone is manufactured in China, most if not all factories are located in China. There is no leaked mapping information that identifies which factories or plants to the possible factory and machine ID, such as 6Q, 79, 7R, 7S, 7T, 7U, 7V, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88 and more, but users can know if the two iPhones are from the same plant.

While the last 3 digits of iPhone serial number are indicative of color and size, the 3-digit should be read together to determine which generation, size and color of iPhone. Here’s the list of possible iPhone models:

VR0 (iPhone 2G Silver 4GB)
WH8 (iPhone 2G Silver 8GB)
0KH (iPhone 2G Silver 16GB)
Y7H (iPhone 3G Black 8GB)
Y7K (iPhone 3G Black 16GB)
3NP (iPhone 3GS Black 16GB)
3NR (iPhone 3GS Black 32GB)
3NQ (iPhone 3Gs White 16GB)
3NS (iPhone 3Gs White 32GB)
A4S (iPhone 4 Black 16GB)

One interesting first two digits of iPhone serial number that stands out is 5K, which has been widely believed to be indicating a refurbished iPhone (reconditioned iPhone). You won’t get a new iPhone with serial number which starts with 5K. The “5K” refurbished iPhone will only be given if you send in your iPhone for repair or exchange and get a replacement iPhone. However, depending on your luck, especially during the initial launch of new iPhone model, you may or may not get an iPhone with “5K” serial number as replacement though.

How to Find Out if iPhone Replacement is New or Refurbished

There are many iPhones from the original iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3Gs to iPhone 4 which are on sales or auction at eBay, online stores or local stores, and the seller may claim to be a new phone, which in effect it’s a refurbished (reconditioned) iPhone, which Apple regards as “new” nonetheless. Refurbished iPhone is giving to Apple customers who claim warranty for faulty, defective, spoilt, DOA (dead on arrival) or scratched iPhone as replacement, and consumers can purchase refurbished iPhone as lower price from Apple or AT&T and Verizon when available for sales.

While refurbished iPhone is as good as new iPhone, some people may not like to get a reconditioned iPhone, which has been used by somebody else before, although the returned iPhone may still be an undamaged, fully functional condition and even brand new condition, where the reason for return can be as simple as phone returned for refund, box damaged, simple cosmetic damaged, exchanged over incompatibility or overstocking, and is not necessarily due to defects.

However, refurbished iPhone on retail through Apple Store or its authorized resellers are generally has a shorter warranty period, which normally runs for 3 months. The exception is refurbished iPhone that is given as replacement for iPhone sent in for warranty claim, where it will follow original iPhone warranty expiry date. To find out if an iPhone is a new or refurbished set, the information “may be” able to retrieve by decoding iPhone serial number (not IMEI number).

Most of the refurbished iPhone will have serial number which starts with 5K. If you have a phone which its serial number starts with 5K, it’s highly likely that it’s a refurbished mobile phone. The first two digits of iPhone indicates its factory code.

Tip: To check the iPhone’s serial number, open Settings app, and go to General -> About.

Brand new iPhone with never return to Apple will have serial number starts with a variety of characters, with the exception of 5K. However, even if the smartphone’s serial number is not starting with 5K, it does not mean that it can’t be a reconditioned iPhone. As a result, the second clue to tell if the iPhone is refurbished is by through the box. Refurbished iPhone normally comes in white or black box which simply stated Apple Certified.

Now that the secret to determine a refurbished iPhone is out, can you insist on a brand new iPhone as replacement if your relatively new iPhone spoilt? Chance is low though, as according to the Apple’s terms of iPhone limited warranty, if a hardware defect arises and a valid claim is received within the Warranty Period, at its option and to the extent permitted by law, Apple will either:

repair the hardware defect at no charge, using new parts or refurbished parts that are equivalent to new in performance and reliability,
exchange the product with a product that is new or refurbished that is equivalent to new in performance and reliability and is at least functionally equivalent to the original product, or
refund the purchase price of the product.

If your luck is good, you may get a replacement iPhone with serial number which is not starting with 5K. These replacement iPhones, though not in official iPhone box, “may be” brand new phones used for replacement purposes, especially in the initial launch period where there is not many returned phone for refurbishing or reconditioning.

OneNote for iPhone Loading List of Notebooks Failed Error 500

After OneNote Mobile for iPhone hits the news wires, the response, demand and downloads of the app has been tremendous, which rightly fulfills the aim of Microsoft to promote OneNote, one of the best note taking application in the market.

iPhone-based OneNote Mobile app has been getting various errors such as “Login failed, error: 400″ message when trying to sign in to Windows Live ID on initial app load, which Office team blames on overwhelming interest in the app and cause intermittent cannot login to OneNote mobile issue. The login issue has since been resolved, but apparently some users face another problem.

After logging into OneNote Mobile on iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, some users have encountered the following error message:

Loading list of notebooks failed. (500)

The error normally happens only on users with a brand new Windows Live ID account. The same error also happens when users attempt to sync the notes on mobile phone with the cloud in Settings -> Sync Now.

Apparently, in order to sync with the OneNote Web App on Windows Live, user also has to sign into the web. Thus, to resolve the issue, try to sign into Office Web Apps using the Windows Live ID at http://office.live.com/ at least once to accept the terms.

Once signed in on web, try to sync the OneNote Mobile for iPhone again, and it should work properly.

How to Jailbreak Apple TV 2G on iOS 4.2.1 with Seas0nPass [Guide]

FireCore team has come up with a PwnageTool like program to build custom jailbroken .ipsw files for your second-gen Apple TV. Like almost all jailbreaks for iOS 4.2.1, Seas0nPass jailbreak is also limited to tethered-boot for now.

Currently the jailbreak for the 4.1.1 (iOS 4.2.1) software is ‘tethered’. A tethered jailbreak requires the AppleTV to be connected to a computer for a brief moment during startup.

Before you proceed with the jailbreak, you will need the following:

A Micro-USB cable
iTunes 10.1.1
iOS 4.2.1 for Apple TV
Seas0nPass

All download links are posted at the end of this article.

Step 1: Download and launch Seas0nPass.

Step 2: Now select “Create IPSW” option to build your own custom jailbroken firmware for Apple TV.

Step 3: Now wait for Seas0nPass to download all the files required for creating custom firmware.

Step 4: When prompted by Seas0nPass, connect your Apple TV using a micro-USB cable (leave power disconnected), and hold-down both the ‘MENU’ and ‘PLAY/PAUSE’ buttons for 7 seven seconds.

Step 5: iTunes should now open automatically to start the restore process.

Step 6: iTunes will confirm the restore when complete. Once done, your Apple TV will be jailbroken on iOS 4.2.1.

Since this is a tethered jailbreak, you will have to boot your Apple TV into “tethered-boot” mode for it to function in jailbroken state.

Note: The Apple TV must be disconnected from the computer (for at least a brief moment) after restoring in iTunes for the tethered boot process below to work properly.

Step 1: Start Seas0nPass again and this time select the ‘Boot Tethered’ option.

Step 2: When prompted by Seas0nPass, connect the Apple TV to your computer via micro-USB. Wait for the rapid flashing light on Apple TV and then connect the power. Once both are connected, hold-down both the ‘MENU’ and ‘PLAY/PAUSE’ buttons for 7 seven seconds for it to enter DFU mode.

Step 3: That’s it ! Seas0n Pass will now automatically complete the tethered boot. Once done, remove the micro-USB cable and connect the HDMI cable.

Once you are done with the jailbreak, you can install the following apps on your jailbroken 2nd-gen Apple TV:

iOS 4.2.5 on Verizon iPhone 4 Features Mobile “Personal Hotspot” [Hands-On Video]

In an hands-on with the just announced Verizon iPhone 4, Engadget has spotted the “Personal Hotspot” feature in iOS 4.2.5, running on the said handset.

The feature seems to be built right into the OS under Settings.app, as can be seen in the screenshot below.

It is currently unconfirmed on whether or not this feature and OS version will remain exclusive to Verizon customers only, or will it make its way on GSM iPhone 4 as well.

Find My iPhone Alternative iGotYa Takes Snaps of the Person Who Stole Your iPhone [Hands-On Video]

Losing your valuable iPhone or iPod touch sure isn’t very fun. iGotYa is a great alternative solution to Find My iPhone in order to find out exactly who took your iPhone and where they’re located.

Basically iGotYa works with your standard native iOS passcode lock system. After setting up your information in Settings, if your passcode is being tampered with on the lockscreen, it will automatically snap a picture of the person who is trying to use or steal it and sends the picture along with the GPS location to your designated email address. Obviously, iGotYa will require Wi-Fi or 3G to send this information to you. However, in my opinion, this is way smarter than Apple’s Find My iPhone service. If you’re near a Wi-Fi connection (let’s say your school or workplace) it’ll be a lot easier to find the person associated with the crime. Not mentioning how nobody would know as the snapshot is taken silently.

Another great feature of iGotYa is the "security mode". This mode allows access to your device after 2 attempts, regardless of what they put in as the passcode. This might sound stupid, but it’s extremely brilliant in ways to keep the person who took your phone from restoring the device, while still taking pictures of them every time you’re on 3G or close to a Wi-Fi connection.

Redsn0w 0.9.7 Beta 6 Brings Skype Fix, Next Version Will Use 4.1 SHSH Blobs Instead Of 4.2b3 For 4.2.1 Untether

Well the 6th beta of Redsn0w 0.9.7 has been released. This version fixes all Skype related issues which were hampering users ever since the first beta of this untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak.

This version fixes Skype (and as expected all along, the Skype issue turns out to be unrelated to sandbox patches).
Unlike the last few betas, you can freely run beta6 over beta5 without a problem (but for testing purposes, we’d really like people to try both ways….from stock, and from already jailbroken). If all you want to do is fix Skype and you’re already untethered using beta5, just run beta6 and deselect every checkbox.

Now that the Bluetooth and Skype related issues have been fixed, the iPhone Dev-Team is now working on porting the “Monte” technique back to iOS 4.1. This will enable users to untether the iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch without having 4.2b3 SHSH blobs saved on Cydia.

Redsn0w 0.9.7 Beta 5 Out Now ! Fixes Bluetooth Issues

The iPhone Dev Team has released yet another update to Redsn0w 0.9.7 jailbreak tool. This new version fixes all sandbox-related issues, including Bluetooth problems on an untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak. Also added is an “anti-piracy plea” note as a warning for those of you who are pirating iOS 4.2 beta 3 firmware.

The Windows version of Redsn0w 0.9.7b5 is also ready, well almost, the only problem is that it is currently painfully slow to use, so the iPhone Dev-Team has decided not to release it until they can fix the performance issues.

There is actually a Windows version of beta5, but it’s excruciatingly slowcompared to the Mac version because it’s forced to use files on your hard drive instead of RAM while it’s processing the very large IPSW images. It really is very very painfully slow, so we probably won’t be releasing it for testing purposes unless it can be sped up somehow.

The iPhone Dev Team has released a minor update to Redsn0w jailbreak tool which will now report or notify you whenever a selected .png image file is invalid when using custom tethered boot logo option.

How To Quickly Boot Your Tethered Jailbroken iPhone / iPad / iPod touch on Windows and Mac

The iPhone Dev-Team has released Redsn0w 0.9.6rc7 to help you boot your tethered jailbroken iPhone, iPad or iPod touch quickly, bypassing some of the screen that you will normally see when using Redsn0w for iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak.

We’ve updated redsn0w to include “one-click” support for those of you running the tethered 4.2.1 jailbreak. Using command-line arguments, you can now bypass the screens you’d normally see as you use redsn0w to “Just boot tethered for now”.

Note:

Make sure you have the latest iTunes 10.1.1 installed.
Windows 7 and Vista users should use Redsn0w in “XP Compatibility Mode”.
All the required download links are given at the end of the post.

Here’s how you can boot your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with one-click:

On Windows:

Step 1: Download Redsn0w 0.9.6rc7 for Windows and the required iOS 4.2.1 firmware file. Place them in one single folder on the Desktop.

Step 2: Start Command Prompt on Windows with Administrative privileges.

Step 3: Enter the following command (modify the name of the folder, and IPSW file as necessary):

%homepath%\Desktop\folder\redsn0w_win_0.9.6rc7\redsn0w.exe -j -i %homepath%\Desktop\folder\iPhone3,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw

For the older devices like the iPod touch 2G and iPhone 3GS (old bootrom):

%homepath%\Desktop\folder\redsn0w_win_0.9.6rc7\redsn0w.exe -j -o -i %homepath%\Desktop\folder\iPhone2,1_4.2.1_8C148a_Restore.ipsw

Step 4: Redsn0w will now start, follow the onscreen instructions for entering DFU mode to boot your device in a tethered jailbroken state.

You can now also create a desktop shortcut with the above command line parameters in theTarget field to boot your iOS device in a tethered jailbroken state with just one-click.

On Mac OS X:

Step 1: Download Redsn0w 0.9.6rc7 for Mac and the required iOS 4.2.1 firmware file. Place them in one single folder on the Desktop.

Step 2: Start Terminal on OS X.

Step 3: Enter the following command (modify the name of the folder, and IPSW file as necessary):

open ~/Desktop/folder/redsn0w_mac_0.9.6rc7/redsn0w.app –args -j -i ~/Desktop/folder/iPhone3,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw

For the older devices like the iPod touch 2G and iPhone 3GS (old bootrom):

How to Update iPhone 4 to iOS 4.2.1 While Preserving Old 01.59.00 Baseband for Unlock [Guide]

If you have an iPhone 4 with the older and unlockable 01.59.00 baseband, and you want to upgrade to the latest iOS 4.2.1 while preserving your baseband, we have a solution for you. The following method will allow you to upgrade your iPhone 4 to iOS 4.2.1, while preserving the 01.59.00 baseband which is unlockable using Utrasn0w 1.2.

This method is known to work only with the iPhone 4, hence it may not work on other devices. The procedure seems fairly simple! We highly recommend you to backup everything on your device before following the procedure. Proceed at your own risk only.

Step 1: Download the original iOS 4.2.1 firmware for iPhone 4 from here.

Step 2: Now trick iTunes into thinking that it is watching Apple servers, while in real, we are going to change the address to Saurik’s server. To do this:

Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ and locate “hosts” file.

Mac OS X users can get to “/etc/” directory by going through “Go –> Go to Folder” from Finder.

Open this “hosts” file in Notepad (for Windows) or TextEdit (for Mac OS X) and add this

74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

line as shown in the screenshot below:

Now simply save this file and you are good to go!

NOTE for Windows 7 and Vista: Start “Notepad” with Administrator privileges by right clicking on “Notepad” app, and click on “Run as Administrator“ option.

NOTE for Mac OS X: Make sure you have full read and write access on your account when you are saving the host file. If it still throws permission error, simply copy the host file to desktop, make the required changes, and then replace it with the original file in “/etc/” directory.

Step 3: Start iTunes, click on your iOS device icon from the sidebar in iTunes. Now press and hold left “alt” (option) button on Mac, or Left “Shift” button if you are on Windows on the keyboard and then click on “Restore” (Not “Update” or “Check for Update”) button in the iTunes and then release this button.

This will make iTunes prompt you to select the location for your iOS 4.2.1 firmware file. Select this ipsw file and click on “Open” to restore your iPhone

Step 5: Your iPhone at this point will be stuck in Recovery Mode, showing that “Connect to iTunes” screen.

To exit your device from Recovery Mode, download this program called TinyUmbrella (Windows/ Mac). Run it and the click on “Exit Recovery” button. Your device will now restart normally.

Once you have completed this procedure, Go to Settings –> About on your iPhone, and scroll down to check your Model Firmware (Baseband), which should now read 01.59.00 (which of course is unlockable using Ultrasn0w).

You should now be able to jailbreak your iPhone 4 on iOS 4.2.1 (tethered) using Redsn0w 0.9.6, or untethered using Redsn0w 0.9.7. Once you have jailbroken your iPhone 4, you can safely unlock it on iOS 4.2.1 (on 01.59.00 baseband) using Ultrasn0w 1.2.
