Goethe saw conversing as the art of arts. What kind of practice is required of us? What techniques are we to cultivate to attain deeper levels of interaction in our conversations? To move in this direction requires loving preparation.

Today I would like to share with you a few core ideas from The Art of Goethian Conversation by Marjorie Spock, 1983, as I find this most meaningful to enter into deeper realms of interactions. Through the art of conversation it is also possible to resolve all situations in peaceful and harmonious ways.

“Its purpose is to call forth a fullness of spiritual life. It strives to enter the sunward realm of living thoughts where a thinker uses all of himself as a tool of knowledge, where, in the manner of his thinking, he takes part as a creative spirit in the ongoing process of the cosmos.

“True conversations have another power. As the participants strive to enter the world of living thoughts together, each attunes his intuitive perception to the theme. He does so in the special atmosphere, a mood of attentive listening, of the most receptive openness to the life of thought into which he and his companions are now entering.

“Thoughts must first be conceived like children, and then brooded out in the spirits of the thinkers. To this end, the theme of the meeting is set in advance. Each member of the group lives with it as a developing concern in his meditation. As the day of the foregathering draws near, he begins to anticipate the coming together of a festival of light which, if he and his fellows have done their work well, will lead to illumination.

“Conversations rest as much on being able to preserve silence as on speaking.”

Stan Carnarius belongs to a Book Club that follows an interesting format when they meet once a month. After their initial moment of silence to gather the best of themselves, each participant voices out loud (one at a time!) the ‘gem’ that resonated for them from the study they read during the month since their last gathering. This is done without discussion, observation or explanation. Each participant may choose to pass. When each has had their turn, there usually is a straight-line summary. Then they can take their turn, in seating order, to say why their gem resonated for them. A participant may choose to pass again. When everyone has spoken those who remained in silence have another opportunity to elaborate on why they chose their piece. Then a meaningful conversation is opened up for all to share.

Those who attend these group sessions are also aware of the Goethian Style of Conversation which is conducive to profound sharing from the soul and an experience of unity and completeness.

Engaging in the Goethian Style of Conversation implies:

1) acknowledging that conversations rest as much on being able to preserve silence as on speaking.

2) being aware that conversations can potentially reach a point where they develop like a living organism, every part being essential and in balance.

3) listening evocatively, with reverence, refraining from any trace of reaction, becoming a seedbed for other’s germinal ideas.

In my next note I will explore in more detail the Art of Goethian Conversation…. Until we meet again.
