As women, we have a tendency to be jealous and wary of other women. Some say it's a double standard in the way we have been raised, always the lesser gender and therefore in competition with each other, some say it's from media pressure to always look perfect and some even say it's because we've been told we can have it all and if we don't, we hate that girl that does.<br /> <br />No matter what the reason, it's stupid. We should try hard to keep jealousy at bay and not only celebrate our best features, but appreciate the positives in others. We all have good things in us and we should be happy with that. I know I've said this before but this site is really great for positive feedback and I see a lot of support for each other, even in our differences. On a slight side note, thanks to everyone who's said such nice things to me in the last few weeks when I went through the whole car accident, bad cop, traveling husband, sick toddler and general pregnancy woes. It definitely made me feel better!<br /> <br />Now, after all my sunshine and rainbows I have to tell you...I'm jealous of women who can pull of red lipstick. It's so glamorous and beautiful and pulled together and is an instant confidence boost. I just can't do it and I've tried so many times. Something about my skin tone just doesn't mesh with red. There are a lot of things I will go without and/or sacrifice but even when I'm at my very worst, usually in the middle of a bout with the flu or totally ticked off but even then,a spritz of an amazing scent revives, restores, and re-creates the "me" who I need to believe is always at her best even when I'm not! </p> <p>There is something about scent that creates amazing sensory imagery and that has SUCH powers to invoke and excite: I can't think of anyone who doesn't have a certain scent they associate with a person, place, times in their lives, or memory: it's what defines those we love most and that we avoid when heartache hits! </p> <p>I adore perfume: My first “real” perfume was presented to me by my Mom on the occasion of my first “grown up dance” in a cellophane wrapped pink and gold cameo- embossed box that held a small spray vial of the heady floral, “White Shoulders”by Evyan which was and remains HER favorite scent! Money was tight but I knew she intended this unexpected gift to signal the arrival of things to come and hoped that they might all be “sweet.” I don’t remember if I actually loved the scent myself but I do remember my first spritz and how it made me feel.This scent remains very associative for me and I still sniff shabby bottles of it which can be found on discount store shelves, cast aside for newer, more modern scents by the next generation...</p> <p>I could not remain faithful to a scent for most of my “formative years” and preferred to dab and dose with whatever seemed appropriate for the day or event! I went though most of the “classics” in record time and when I worked in fine department stores, I was allowed to sample whatever was taking the fragrance world by storm at the time! Estee Lauder’s “Youth Dew” (1953 as a bath oil/fragrance) remains one of my most memorable scents ever because it literally lasted for hours on me AND on my dates, my first "naughty girl" non-squeeky clean scent…</p> <p>In 1992, while visiting Hong Kong, I stumbled upon the fragrance launch in progress near my hotel that would define me for years to come: “Angel” by Thierry Mugler. It literally smelled like heaven on me with notes of chocolate, vanilla and fruits and I wore this scent, which at the time had not yet even launched in the US for almost 15 years at a rather staggering price-point for the time. It was MINE and all who knew me knew my scent, men swooned, women begged for the name! Then as with most things that begin as original and amazing, it became mainstream and a bit diluted by overexposure so day that I caught a whiff as one of the few women in the world I truly dislike walked by, I knew my crystal blue-star bottle needed to be buried deep, never to be worn by me again I do still admire it on others however for their impeccable taste alone! </p> <p>I mourned the loss of this reliable friend and today, I continue my scent journey with perhaps less abandon but with a renewed sense of wonder! There are SO many incredible scents to choose from but my taste still drifts towards the also-rans, the divas in fancy bottles, and the ones that few either dare to wear or cannot readily find...I scour, I read reviews, I beg far-traveling friends to “bring me back a bottle” of this or that but recently and for now, I have again settled on a scent that once worn, knocked me to my knees, the incredible “Tubereuse Criminelle” by Serge Lutens. Until VERY recently, this deadly female, show stopping creation of one of the most sensational perfumer’s in the world was ONLY available in Paris! It was not to be exported to us mere mortals outside of the hallowed Palais Royal until one of my very favorite vendors, “Luckyscent” brought it to the US. It immediately sold out while I was fumbling to get my credit card out of my wallet! So is the market. <strong>15.7 BILLION</strong> was spent on Valentine's Day last year. The average man spent $116.21 to woo his honey in 2011. It's a money making machine this crazy little thing we call love.</p> <p>The weirdest part? The gift most woman want is just an<em> "I love you"</em> and not counting emotions into dollars but, the last time I checked that was free. That's all 87% of woman wanted to hear on the great V-day, but yeah, he's a little screwed if he doesn't follow it up with roses so I don't mean "screwed' in the positive way.</p> <p>I've always bought my own flowers, I'm more into peonies then roses anyhow. I am a stickler for jewelry though. I mean, flowers die after a week.</p> <p>I had the weirdest conversation with my Gram. I know she reads the site but she's so old school it hurts my brain to try to wrap around what she says. I'm sure she thinks the same.<em> "Oh Meg, I visited Dad and told him you're not with the same boy anymore. I think he got rid of you for asking for that expensive bag."</em> What? It was like Charlie Brown's teacher's<em> "blah, blah, wha, wha."</em> I guess back in her day you didn't say things you wanted. Maybe it's a depression era thing. Maybe "The Greatest Generation" was super great because they just smiled and nodded. I'm not that Great. Never claimed to be.</p> <p>If you're looking for a material item to make you feel better I can tell you the truth, it will. It will for maybe an hour. A glorious, heart-dizzying hour. But it will fade. It will fade unless the person that gave it to you wants to give you a glorious item because he thinks you're that special and that amazing and he has the means to give it to you. Then it doesn't fade, then you feel special every time you wear it, spray it or clasp it around your neck. And yes, sorry Gram, sorry "Greatest Generation" but you, "This Generation" are that great. You bring a lot to the table, you deserve to feel special because you are. The minute someone whisper's in your ear <em>"blah, blah waah, waah."</em> Tune out. You deserve all that and an "<em>I love you"</em> on top. If a fabulous bag is thrown into the mix then <strong>HOORAY!</strong></p> <p>My last relationship didn't work out the way I wanted. It had nothing to do with the bag I desired. There were a lot of factor's that culminated to its demise. However, I am happy to say, I really love him and we talk everyday (as I tend to keep a positive relationship with all of my serious ex's. Why not? There was something about them that you loved at one point.)</p> <p>I've always been outgoing. I can talk to anyone. I am a total people person. Life laughs at you, takes these qualities into consideration and says <em>"You'll work alone in a room in your back bedroom."</em> Because Life is a mean bitch sometimes.<br />So, believe it or not, I don't meet a lot of people in my back bedroom.</p> <p>I have never tried online dating. I thought it was for people that couldn't talk to people in real life. But what about me? I can talk to anyone and just don't ever have the chance to. I can talk at events and if I were a gay man I would clean up that scene and be a dating machine!...But I'm not.</p> <p>So I took (after several friends suggestion) the plunge. I signed up for an OK Cupid dating profile. What could it hurt?</p> <p>It hasn't hurt, however it has made me consider a nunnery. I was still trying to figure out my profile and had 50 dates emailing me. They were not people I would date. They were nuts. However, I've been on for a day now and sifted through 200+ emails and I've found 3. I've found three guys I would be willing to go out with. Three I would have never found if I didn't try. I think I'm in the minority, even for my section of the country, but I want some SNOW! We're on track for one of the least snowiest winters in history here in the Boston area and I just don't like it. Last year we had record snowfalls and 4 or 5 major storms/blizzards and while I'm not looking for that much, a few inches on the ground would be very welcome. Yesterday was February 1st and some towns near me saw 60 degrees! That's just not right for my New England bones!<br /> <br />Especially since this year, my son is old enough and big enough to really get out and enjoy the snow and the new sled he got for Christmas. We had one snow fall that was about 4 inches and he played outside for hours, and LOVED it! Last year with 30 + inches on the ground we couldn't do much since I would have lost the poor kid, but this year there's nothing! A good 6-8 incher would be great. It is winter after all....<br /> <br />I guess I'll just have to fake it. I'll make myself hot chocolate, crack a window to get a chill in the air and watch footage from Canadian ski resorts or something. I guess I can't complain too much since without all the snow, cold and dry weather my skin is behaving nicely. The pregnancy has mixed things up a bit, I have some funny dry spots here and there, and some bumps that need exfoliating pretty frequently but I'm not dry and cracking like I could be. Sometimes a girl just has to overindulge and just fill that emotional "void" by any means necessary! </p> <p>I got lucky this time around: it really does appear that the mass-market retailers are upping their game and it's actually quite a lot of fun to browse the drugstore aisles in search of a golden-egg or two! Lots of new brands and tons of options in terms of implements and items to explore: I actually had a couple of "wins" in my haul this time but have to share the best of the bunch with you today because it really IS a great product: Revlon's new "Colorburst™ Lip Butters" are amazing! The sparkly end-cap display was loaded with pretty, shiny, plastic tubes in so many wearable shades (20 in all!) that contain a gel-formulation lip "butter" with luscious ingredients like mango and shea butter that not only give you sheer- medium coverage for freshly- colored pout but that actually increase the moisture content in your lips substantially with regular use! These are just gorgeous: they glide on smoothly and have no scent of taste so there's little fear of an adverse reaction like I experience with some of the high-end brands and I defy you not to find a handful of shades that you'll reach for constantly! Because if you don't have anything nice to say, you shouldn't say anything at all. Right? That rule doesn't seem to apply anymore, especially on the internet. It's sad really, common courtesy and being sensitive to others' feelings seem to be as dead as shoulder pads and pet rocks (oh please don't tell me shoulder pads are back in!!!) I am constantly disgusted by comments people leave on news sites, blogs and social networking sites. Not this one of course, you ladies are always fun, interesting and easy to get along with. But some other sites are just brutal! And it infuriates me that people feel so entitled to spew their disgusting insults to whoever had the misfortune of reading their comments. I'm all for our freedoms, but you can have a belief and share it without being negative, spoiled, racist, ignorant or just plain mean.<br /> <br />Wow, I must be having a bad week! Oh wait, my toddler had a stomach bug and I got into a car accident and was treated so badly by the first officer to respond that I filed a formal complaint and now he's under investigation for abandoning a pregnant woman and her toddler on the side of the road on a busy street in 30 degree weather. Yup, it actually happened, he was a cop in one town and I was about 50 feet over the town line so he told me to my face that he wasn't going to help me and to call the other town. And then he left. Seriously. Oh, and did I mention my husband was in Texas for the week for work so I had to call my daycare lady to come pick up my son so I could get my car towed? I watch the shows, read the magazines and check the websites and try to stay up on latest trends (cost-efficiently, of course!) But, life gets busy sometimes. I forget to check my blogs and sites, or I find myself reading a People from 3 weeks ago or I look in my closet and realize my most current shirt is from October. Oops.<br /> <br />That usually sends me straight to Nordstrom's Rack, or hautelook.com for a quick update and an inexpensive retail pick-me-up. I try, really. And I never pay full price. I'm posing this question to you because I am not ashamed to admit I miss the latest trends sometimes and I know you all have those busy weeks when you suddenly realize your toes aren't bare because you took off the polish, they're bare because the color chipped off and grew out. We're all busy people!<br /> <br />So....are matte lips in? I lean toward no. Help me out ladies, flat or gloss? And I'm not talking about my newly redone bathroom walls. I don't really like how matte lips look and in scanning my People (the January 16 issue, I'm only 1 week behind!) I didn't see a lot of matte lips. Maybe some matte color with some gloss over it, but nothing flat.<br /> <br />In the name of fashion, make-up and blogging, I tried a matte lipstick from NYX this week. I chose <a href="http://www.nyxcosmetics.com/products/lips/lipstick/matte-lipstick ">Whipped Caviar</a>, a neutral beige-y pink. Something about that name makes my stomach turn. Whipped Caviar? Whipped fish? Fish on my lips? gross. That's the pregnant lady talking right there, don't worry, it doesn't taste or smell like fish!<br /> <br />It was a little pink on me, but I'm a champion layerer and adding some shimmer in a brownish gold color made it workable. The color went on fairly smoothly, sometimes mattes can pull, but this was a bit more creamy than I expected. It’s got natural licorice Extract and Macadamia Oil in it! </span></p> <p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><span>The tube is cool; it fits in your hand like half tube of toothpaste would. This tube has an applicator tip on it that has a roller-ball on the end. Packed inside the tube is the Renewing & Brightening Facial Serum. To get it out, you turn the applicator tip around and then run the roller ball across your face, wherever you want to!</span></p> <p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><span>It’s so much fun to use, you’ll want to close your eyes and roller ball yourself into oblivion. The idea is … while you are rolling this roller ball all over your face, the facial serum is adhering itself to the ball as it rolls through the tube and then the facial serum applies itself to your face! It’s very easy to get carried away with the rolling, especially if it’s your first experience with a roller ball applicator. Be sure to turn the serum applicator back around after using it, to keep any serum from covertly sneaking out and going to waste.</span></p> <p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><span>I’m sure some of you are worried about bacteria, if this applicator is running amok all over the place. They say you can wipe the applicator roller ball off with a tissue and it will be fine.
