Ready - Music Review

Now this is what one calls a perfect project in the making. Salman Khan, Anees Bazmee, Pritam, Bhushan Kumar and that promise of an out and out entertainer - one strongly believes that the music of Ready can't really go wrong. There are movies that are termed as popcorn entertainers; now here is a soundtrack which one believes would be the kind that would be best enjoyed when being a little high. Though four different lyricists - Amitabh Bhattacharya, Neelesh Misra, Ashish Pandit and Kumaar - are roped in for a song apiece with Devi Sri Prasad also chipping in as a guest composer, you look forward to whether Ready indeed has enough 'dum' in it to be the biggest commercial soundtrack of the year so far.

Pritam lends a fantastic start to Ready with 'Character Dheela' and what actually catches your instant attention is the fact that despite this being a Salman Khan entertainer, the song has the trademark sound that the composer is known for lending to his songs. If one has liked the kind of tunes that Pritam has composed for Shahid in films like Kismat Konnection, Jab We Met and Badmaash Company, he is bound to totally lap up 'Character Dheela' due to the Salman element being cleverly integrated by Amitabh Bhattacharya through his smart lyrics (don't miss that reference to 'Munni' and 'Sheila').

Going totally by Salman's on/off screen image which in any case is hardly different these days, 'Character Dheela' by Neeraj Shridhar and Amrita Kak is a lot of fun for those four minutes that it plays. An interesting choreography with Zarine Khan exuding oomph (a distinct shift from her Veer image) is another good reason that further consolidates the fact that 'Character Dheela' would entice a lot of 'seetis' and 'taalis' when it plays on screen. A chartbuster all the way that also arrives in a 'remix' and accentuates the fun.

What follows next is the kind of romantic number that Salman had to his name in dozens during the 90s. Written by Neelesh Misra, 'Humko Pyar Hua' also has short English portions in between the 'antra' and has KK going subtle in his rendition with Tulsi Kumar giving him good support. Though the original tune as well as it's remix is fine and doesn't give any reason to complain, it is nowhere close to the kind that Salman has enjoyed in Veer (Surili Ankhiyon Wali) and Dabangg (Tere Mast Mast Nain). At the end of it all, 'Humko Pyar Hua' is one harmless number that will find some popularity going for it only after the film turns out to be a success.

What is definitely going to be popular though in the very first go is 'Dhinka Chika' which is all set to be the biggest chartbuster of the first half of 2011 at the least. A re-done version of Telugu number 'Ringa Ringa' (Arya 2) with the original composer Devi Sri Prasad being roped in here, 'Dhinka Chika' (also arriving again in the 'remix version') has Mika Singh and Amrita Kak bringing on the kind of attitude that was pretty much required for the song of this genre. Ashish Pandit's lyrics are as 'chalu' as it gets and reminds one of the songs that were made for Mithun Chakravorty, Jeetendra and Govinda during the 80s. Expect frenzy in theaters, especially single screens, when the song plays on screen.

Pritam returns on the scene with a quintessential North Indian 'shaadi byaah' celebration track 'Meri Ada Bhi' that starts off with the folk rendition of much heard 'Laung Gawacha'. A rhythmic track that surprisingly has Rahat Fateh Ali Khan at the helm of affairs (since he is known more for his soulful melodies rather than dance numbers), 'Meri Ada Bhi' is what one terms as the kind of number which has been made for family audience. Tulsi Kumar too is pretty much in elements here for this song that at places does tend to veer towards 'U and I' (Pritam's composition from De Dana Dan at places) courtesy the way Rahat approaches it before the composer manages to pull it all back.

Any regrets from Ready? Only one which is - 'it finishes off too soon'. From an album of this stature one expected at least a couple of more songs to make it a wholesome affair. However, with only four songs in the album, one longs to lay hands on a lot more. Nonetheless, from what is made available, there are good enough reasons to celebrate with 'Dhinka Chika' and 'Character Dheela' all set to be not just huge hits musically but also turn out to be massive crowd pullers. On the other hand 'Meri Ada Bhi' ends up adding good variety to the album with 'Humko Pyar Hua' carrying a potential to gather steam once the film releases. Once on shelves, Ready should be a sell-out due to all around craze amongst audience to check out what the music is all about. However, the momentum is only going to continue after the film hits the screens.

Dum Maaro Dum - Music Review

Abhishek and Earl’s Thayn Thayn somehow sounds so much like a piece from Bluffmaster even with a different composer here. I guess this will sound good and look great once it comes out. Watch out for it.

Te Amo, the song sung by Ash King, is definitely a lovely one and Pritam does his own good thing with Ash’s voice, as long as you don’t compare this one to Dil gira daffatan. While Ash is lovely in the soft romantic song and natural with the English parts of the song, Sunidhi is not bad either. One song you would love.

Like in all Pritam albums, there is another version of Te Amo, a reprise by Pritam. I guess I need not tell you how a soft version of a soft romantic song would sound when Mohit sings it. The slight acoustic setting Pritam has given to the song is nice.

Mit Jaaye Gham. Dum Maaro Dum. Shirt. Potty. Nanga. Well, It’s like that only. All I can say is that after this song is on air, the censor board won’t have to do much to decide the audience. Families are NOT going to watch this one. Oh, as for the music, it’s okay. As expected, it’s made in kinda addictive mood. But lyrics, oh, well..

If there is something in the album that I was able to hear in a loop from the first time itself, here it is. Jiyein Kyun is not only good on music and singing, the lyrics are so lovely, I just fell for the song very soon.

As for the music, Pritam is almost in Metro mood here and Papon sounds so much like James in his singing. And Mr Sahni Jaideep, I love you. DO Listen to this one.

And then Zubeen Garg’s Jaana hai is a signature Pritam song in Zubeen’s very typical voice. Nothing too great, but there is definitely a special kind of depth in Zubeen’s voice that Always attracts you, which especially suits songs with a, what would I say, kashish, with a longing to go ahead and achieve something. And here is one such song. Liked it.

Overall, Dum Maaro Dum may be an album to hide from your parents (yes, at any age) after listening to that title song, but there are a few good songs in the album and while you love everything from Jiyein Kyun to Te Amo, Jaana hai and Thayn Thayn aren’t disappointing. In short, cool. In fact a bit too much in a some places, you know.

Thank You - Music Review

Anees Bazmee definitely does things in an upside down way. That’s how there is Thank You after Welcome. This one again comes from the Pritam’s Factory of Dance-n-forget Music. Here comes a review.

The album starts with Mika’s Pyaar do Pyaar lo, that you might have caught on TV. The oldie-newie song sounds more like a remix and looks very much like a try to redo apni to jaise taise from Housefull. I guess Pritam has been successful, but not so much as SEL were with theirs.

The next song, Razia, is sung by Saleem and Ritu Pathak, but Saleem can be confused for a girl with his high pitch here. Allah bachaye meri jaan ki razia gundon mein phans gayi sounds like a typical item song and Ritu sounds pretty good with her singing. Nothing new, just another good product from the Factory.

Pyaar tera pyaar mujhe = Main yahan bhi, main wahan bhi (Toh Baat Pakki). Next beat seems to be taken from Action replay. Even though I liked Neeraj Shridhar and Richa Sharma’s Full volume with it’s never-too-high notes, Pritam looks like he’s out of composition styles and trying to feed old things, though I don’t actually think it’s the case.

When I heard Sonu Nigam’s My Heart is beating, I was wondering why Thank You seems so inspired by Housefull. This one is sung by Sonu very much in Mohammad Rafi’s style, precisely like the ones the legend sang for Shammi Kapoor. With good promotion, song should do well. Liked Sonu’s singing in this one, and not bad work by Pritam as well.

Pyaar Mein is the last original song of the album, which is sung by Neeraj Shridhar and Javed Ali. Again, Pritam looks like captured in his own styles even while he gives a good song. While Javed Ali makes the song his own by singing it beautifully, Neeraj’s ‘chorus’ sounds lovely. But what fascinated me the most in the song was the backing vocals that appeared from the very start of the song. Unfortunately, I don’t know whose voice that is, though I presume it’s either Suzanne or Bianca Gomes as their names are mentioned for backing vocals in the album. Also, this is probably one song of the album which is good not only in music but also with words. Amitabh Bhattacharya is the guy holding the pen here. And another similarity with Housefull. OK. Excuse me for that.

And while I was looking for the backing vocals, one more thing I came to know was that Sachin and Jigar were among the programmers of the album. Nice to know that.

I didn’t try listening to the remixes especially they were all merely ‘remix’es and mentioned nothing more specific than that.
So overall, Thank you is an okay, run of the mill thing in which most of the songs are danceable while one particular song called Pyaar mein is something close to Tum mile’s level, but a bit lower than that, also because it’s so much similar. Quite what was expected from Pritam, or actually slightly better if you think of No Problem.

Game - Music Review

Shankar Ehsaan Loy are on a roll in 2011. First Patiala House, which came with some pretty decent tracks, then the official world cup song and now they have come with Game which is their latest offering. Apart from Shankar Ehsaan Loy, what makes Game, an album to look out for is that the movie is produced by Farhaan Akhtar and lyrics penned by his father Javed Akhtar. Already, S-E-L and Farhaan team have given us musical chartbusters like Dil Chahta Hai, Don and Rock On, so expectations from Game multiplies.

Game is an edge of seat who-dunnit thriller and if such movies are supported by good music, they turn out to be blockbuster hits like Race, Humraaz, Gupt and so on have proved in the past.

The album comprises of 4 original tracks, 3 remixes and 1 reprise. The first track is the title song It's A Game, which may appear in the starting credits or as a background theme piece, which may be running throughout the movie. Vishal Dadlani tries his best, but the song itself is ordinary. This may be the ideal song to open the movie, but ain't ideal enough to open the album.

Maine Kab Yeh Socha Tha, sung by Shaan, Anusha Mani and Loy, which comes in next, is a romantic number with a soulful melody. The number grows slowly on you, on repeated listening's you can't just help but fall in love with this track. It may not turn out to be a runaway hit but it is surely worth listening again and again, enjoy it while it lasts.

The next track is Mehki Mehki, which also features in the theatrical trailer is another melodious number sung by Shreya Ghoshal and Kshitij. The lyrics of this song are the best of the lot, and the singers especially Shreya has done a tremendous job with the vocals, Kshitij is also impressive. The song strikes the right chord instantly and is surely going to be loved by many. Definitely the best track of the album as it does not take much time in getting you addicted to it.

The final original track Kaun Hai Ajnabi falls in the category what Bardaasht Nahi Kar Sakta was for Humraaz or Duniya Haseeno Ka Mela was for Gupt or Khwaab Dekhe was for Race, it is a song which comes with a Super Hit tag. Once again its KK who weaves the magic ably supported by Aditi Singh Sharma. If picturized and promoted well this song can turn out to become pretty huge.

The remixes which are in next, again like any other bollywood album, make the original tracks look masterpiece. At best the remixes just pump up the tempo of the songs while the reprise of the title song is just about average.

Giving good music for a thriller is not everyone's cup of tea, but Shankar Ehsaan Loy do a splendid job this time with Game. Not to forget Dil Chahta Hai was a rom-com and Rock On was a musical, hence the music had great scope but thrillers do not allow that much of freedom, considering this although Game is not as great as a DCH or a Rock On but still full marks to S-E-L to come up with tracks such as Mehki Mehki, Kaun Hai Ajnabi and Maine Kab Yeh Socha Tha. Now with digital sales being the primary income source since people rarely buy CD's these 3 songs will be most favourite for many listeners.

The music of Game surely thrills you. Go get it as soon as possible!

Tanu Weds Manu - Movie Review

For some strange reason, Hindi cinema has often projected an NRI youngster as a cool and hep dude, pretending to speak Hindi with an English accent. But that, in my opinion, is merely a façade. It%s far from real. Sure, there could be exceptions, but every NRI who arrives in India isn%t wearing an Armani or Versace. Neither is he a die-hard romantic like Raj or Rahul. In fact, a lot of NRIs I know are amused to note that while they held on to the traditions, the ones in India are more inclined towards the West.

Yet, the East-West love story remains a pet theme that continues to invade the Hindi screen. Films like PURAB AUR PASCHIM, DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE and NAMASTEY LONDON have explored this topic most convincingly. In fact, a lot many people feel that YRF and Dharma have highlighted this aspect in various films, which the diaspora has lapped up with glee. But, of late, films that carry with them the scent of the soil are being attempted by our storytellers. TANU WEDS MANU too highlights this facet.

The NRI in TANU WEDS MANU is docile, unassuming and soft-spoken, has no accent or attitude, believes in arranged marriages, relishes the evergreen songs of Mohammed Rafi, is old-fashioned literally. The girl is contradictory. She%s belligerent and dominating, also smokes, drinks and uses expletives, has had many ¯fairs%, has her new boyfriend%s name tattooed on her chest, is a straight-forward and fearless babe. This is their story!

Like his directorial debut STRANGERS, director Aanand L Rai opts for unconventional and unpredictable situations in TANU WEDS MANU. Of course, the fact that Tanu and Manu would tie the knot sooner or later is at the back of your mind, even before the reels have begun to unfold, but you want to experience their journey - their voyage from strangers to lovers.

TANU WEDS MANU has some great moments, some standard ones, some tedious ones as well, when you feel that the story is being stretched for no particular reason. The drama tends to get heavy after a point and that takes a toll on the film. In fact, the writing gets shaky in the middle of the second hour, although the finale is well thought of and implemented. You may call it clichéd or formulaic, but it works big time.

Meet Manu [R. Madhavan], a seedha saadha Doctor from London. Intelligent, temperate and from a respectable family, the perfect groom which every parent wants for their daughter. When he arrives in India, he realizes that India has changed and so have the people. The Indian women in particular are more attracted towards the Western lifestyle. Family pressure leads him to Kanpur to meet Tanu [Kangna Ranaut], the quintessential small-town girl who has studied in Delhi.

Tanu is a smart, intelligent girl who will do everything that her parents will disapprove. With a mind of her own and a love for rebellion, Tanu is dead against an arranged marriage. But destiny holds something totally different for these diametrically diverse personalities.

Although not similar to JAB WE MET, TANU WEDS MANU conjures up memories of the Imtiaz Ali-directed film. The Punjabi setting and the rebellious girl are two prominent similarities that one recollects instantly. Besides, in HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM, PARDES, JAB WE MET as well as TANU WEDS MANU, the girl is in love with someone else and the protagonist helps them take the relationship forward. But director Aanand L Rai ensures that TANU WEDS MANU retains its individuality and doesn%t come across as a replica/clone of those immensely likable films. In fact, his handling of several light moments as well as dramatic ones is exemplary.

TANU WEDS MANU has some wonderful moments in the first hour, but I%d like to single out the sequence when Madhavan confides in Deepak Dobriyal about Kangna not wanting to marry him. Also, the sequence at the interval comes as a bolt from the blue. It%s the writing in the post-interval portions that bothered me. Jimmy Sheirgill%s sequences aren%t as convincing. Also, since Kangna is shown to be a blabber mouth and also forthright and outspoken, why does she turn docile all of a sudden? It doesn%t go with her character, honestly. Also, since Ravi Kissen has Madhavan%s photograph [presumably handed to him by Jimmy Sheirgill], why is Jimmy unaware that Madhavan is the same guy when he meets him for the first time? A few hiccups, but not the type that really go against the film. However, the penultimate 15/20 minutes bring the film back on tracks. Actually, the climax is the highpoint of this enterprise.

The soundtrack takes you by complete surprise. It is earthy and charming. %Sadi Gali% and %Jugni% are two tracks that act as pillars and would help attract moviegoers to cineplexes. Also, the popular track of yesteryears, %Kajra Mohabbat Wala%, is well integrated in the narrative. Chirantan Das%s cinematography captures the lush locales of North India well.

Even though Madhavan enacts the role of an NRI, he doesn%t come across as a stereotypical phoren returned desi. He is real, restrained, yet forceful. To essay a character in such an understated manner is a challenge for any actor and he does it with complete understanding of the character. Unlike her past films, Kangna plays a part that has a zest for life and is bold and fun-loving at the same time. She%s audacious, but lovable. Nonetheless, she needs to work on her pronunciation/diction, which sounds so peculiar.

Jimmy Sheirgill springs a pleasant surprise. Known for portraying soft/positive roles, this one comes as a complete shocker. Though his role isn%t well etched out, he leaves a solid impression in the latter reels. Ravi Kissen is wasted. What is he doing in this film? Deepak Dobriyal is superb yet again. This dynamic actor is under-utilized in our films. Rajendra Gupta, K.K. Raina, Navni Parihaar and Deepti Mishra are effective. Eijaz Khan and Swara Bhaskar are wonderful.

On the whole, TANU WEDS MANU is a feel-good, light-hearted entertainer with the right dose of humor, drama and romance, besides a popular musical score and some smart dialogue that act as toppings. If you like simple, uncomplicated films that tug at your heartstrings, then chances are that you might just like this sweet little rom-com. In terms of economics, the right holders have already recovered a substantial amount from the sale of Satellite Rights. The merits of the film coupled with no major opposition till 1 April will ensure healthy returns on their investment, thus making the investors recover the remainder amount easily. The only concern is the inopportune release period for movies [World Cup] and chances are its business might get affected on days when crucial matches are played, especially when India is on field.

The very thought of watching a Vishal Bhardwaj film excites a movie buff no end. Right from MAKDEE to KAMINEY, Bhardwaj's body of work stands out from the rest. The forward-thinking film-maker's fixation for adapting novels and plays is known to all and sundry by now. Continuing with his practice of adapting from the written form, the supremely talented storyteller now adapts Ruskin Bond's short story 'Susanna's Seven Husbands' for his new outing 7 KHOON MAAF. Known for walking the unusual path, Bhardwaj narrates an unconventional story yet again - of a woman who marries multiple times, following the untimely death of her husbands.

Till a few years ago, no one would've ever thought of making a film on a woman who marries, remarries, weds again, ties the knot yet again... in fact, she walks down the aisle multiple times. That's not all, the woman, we are told, kills each of her husbands subsequently. The theme might come as a jolt to the trditional moviegoers, since the wives on the Hindi screen are either depicted as docile and dutiful or fiercely independent and ambitious. The question is, will the orthodox Indian audience absorb a theme like this? It's blasphemous, some may opine. Imagine a murderous bride, some may rant.

There's talk that 7 KHOON MAAF is also loosely inspired from an Italian movie by the name SETTE VOLTE DONNA aka WOMAN TIMES SEVEN [1967], helmed by Vittorio De Sica. That one depicted seven short stories with adultery as the focal point [Shirley MacLaine, the protagonist, knits these stories together]. However, the resemblance could be coincidental and not an attempt to plagiarize that film.

7 KHOON MAAF works in parts. A few stories - involving Neil Nitin Mukesh, John Abraham, Irrfan Khan and Annu Kapoor - are absorbing, while at least two could've been better narrated - Naseeruddin Shah and Aleksandr Dyachenko. The unfortunate part is that the uninteresting ones come in the latter half and coupled with its excessive length, the impact generated by a captivating first hour gets diluted in the process. Even the culmination doesn't sweep you off your feet.

Not just the unconventional plot, even the execution of the subject material is offbeat and quirky. There are several instances in the narrative where the viewer has to stay very, very attentive. Unlike other films, Bhardwaj wants his viewer to stay attentive and use his mind while watching the various stories in 7 KHOON MAAF. In one sequence, the camera zooms and the funeral transforms into a marriage, while another sequence depicts the marriage transforming into a funeral. Also, the mystery of the killer with five fingers and one toe is disentangled towards the end, but the sequence doesn't register as effectively thanks to the way it has been depicted.

Susanna [Priyanka Chopra] is unlucky in love. Her first husband, Major Edwin [Neil Nitin Mukesh], is overtly possessive and suspicious. After his demise, Susanna marries Jimmy [John Abraham] as she is floored by his musical talent. Jimmy becomes successful, but with success comes girls and drugs. He dies of drug overdose.

Enter Wasiullah aka Musafir [Irrfan Khan]. Impressed by his poetry, Susanna marries him, but discovers that he's a romantic in daytime, but a beast at night. He too gets eliminated. Susanna falls for the suave Nicolai [Aleksandr Dyachenko] from Moscow, but this marriage doesn't last long as Susanna discovers that Vronsky has a wife in Russia.

Following the death of a foreign national, the police start taking keen interest in the case. The officer Keemat Lal [Annu Kapoor] enters Susanna's life. Initially, he asks for sexual favors and later, persuades her to marry him. He dies due to cardiac arrest. After the death of Keemat Lal, Susanna marries Dr. Modhusudon [Naseeruddin Shah]. Susanne is depressed and he puts her on a mushroom only diet. But he's the first guy in her life who wants to get rid of her. Instead, she murders him.

In the end, Susanna marries yet again... for the seventh time. This time, to someone who knows she has committed the murders and sins. What happens next?

Though Priyanka is shown killing her husbands with the help of her ever-faithful staff, let this be told that it's not a scary or frightful experience. Sure, it's intense, but at the same time Bhardwaj injects humor in the narrative and that's the prime reason why the narrative never gets heavy or serious. I'd like to say this film is in a space of its own.

Also, though the protagonist marries and remarries, you don't feel any kind of animosity or hatred for the character. On the contrary, one empathizes with her never-ending pursuit for true love. One feels the pain, loneliness and tragedy that she goes through and that's what makes her the woman that she eventually turns out to be. Wicked, she is, but Bhardwaj offers reasons for her to get rid of those men. The reasons, in most cases, are convincing. But the transition from one man/husband to another is so sudden that Susanna comes across as a desperate lady hankering for yet another marriage.

Bhardwaj, the writer, leaves the viewer clueless about the two stories in the second hour. Fine, Susanna had learnt that her Russian husband had a wife and two kids tucked away in Russia, but the manner in which the entire case is solved leaves you baffled. In fact, one often wonders if it was so easy to murder a person and move on in life. How could the law enforcement remain a silent spectator despite multiple murders/mysterious deaths involving the same woman? The writing didn't appear foolproof and convincing to me.

Bhardwaj shares yet another responsibility in his films - handling the music department. One is assured that Bhardwaj would come up with lilting and high quality compositions, but the soundtrack of 7 KHOON MAAF is strictly okay. The Indian version of the Russian song 'Kalinka', 'Darling', is already a rage and it goes without saying that it's the best track of the enterprise. Rendered brilliantly, the song is sure to be one of the reasons why people will be tempted to watch the film.

Always ready to accept challenges in her career [AITRAAZ, YAKEEN, FASHION] and raising the bar with her performances, Priyanka accepts the challenge to portray ages from 21 to 65 in 7 KHOON MAAF. It must've been an arduous task to get the different age-groups right, but she proves her infinite acting potential yet again. Known to be an actress who stays true to every character that she is portraying, Priyanka delivers yet another sparkling, award worthy performance this time. There are several love-making sequences with her husbands and Priyanka has handled those [bold] sequences without inhibitions.

Amongst the remaining cast, Annu Kapoor leaves the maximum impact. He's simply outstanding! John doesn't really get much scope, Neil is effective, Irrfan is wonderfully restrained, Naseer is believable and Aleksandr is passable. Vivaan Shah, who narrates the story of Susanna, is a talent to watch out for. Though it's his maiden film as an actor, it doesn't seem like one. He is not your regular debutant and that's what makes his character appear so real. Konkona Sen Sharma does well. Usha Uthup and the two male helps are good.

On the whole, 7 KHOON MAAF is a dark film that has its share of positives and negatives. However, the film will meet with diverse reactions - some will fancy it, while some will abhor it. The film will appeal more to the critics/columnists and the festival circuit. However, it is not the kind of cinema that will set the box-office ablaze. Ideally, I would've given a two star rating for this film, but I am going ahead with an extra star for Priyanka Chopra's sterling performance!

Patiala House - Movie Review

Director Nikihil Advani and Akshay's last outing together, the infamous CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA, remains a favorite punching bag to this day. Besides, PATIALA HOUSE comes at a time when people have had an overdose of Akshay starrers. I reiterate, there ought to be at least six months' gap between two films of a major star, while this is Akshay's fourth release in six months [KHATTA MEETHA - 23 July, ACTION REPLAYY - 5 November and TEES MAAR KHAN - 24 December]. Moreover, the film opens exactly one week before the keenly anticipated World Cup cricket matches and coupled with that, it will have no breathing space as the very next week witnesses the release of another much-awaited film 7 KHOON MAAF. Expecting PATIALA HOUSE to overcome these hurdles is tough, mainly when the chips are down!

The chips are down also because people assume PATIALA HOUSE to be something which it is not. Let me clarify that PATIALA HOUSE is not an 'extension' of Akshay's previous films. Sure, PATIALA HOUSE has its share of humorous moments, but the humor is of the subtle kind here. Nor can one compare it to NAMASTEY LONDON, since that film was more of a love story between a British-born Indian and a desi Indian, while PATIALA HOUSE is more of an inspirational film. It's about chasing your dreams as and when you get another opportunity, if you don't succeed the first time.

Essentially, PATIALA HOUSE is a somber film, with the focal point being drama and histrionics rather than the slapstick wit or in-your-face comedy that one anticipates from an Akshay starrer. It's more about familial bonding, with a sport [cricket] interwoven in the screenplay. This one doesn't tickle your funny bone; instead it moistens your eyes thanks to the poignant moments in the narrative, especially the penultimate moments of the film. Those exhausted of watching Akshay getting typecast in similar genre films will drop the charges while watching this one. This is, without a shred of doubt, amongst Akshay's finest performances.

On the flip side, the screenplay of PATIALA HOUSE is erratic - vacillating between engaging to run of the mill to flaccid moments. In fact, a chunk involving the game plan - the family trying various gimmicks and ploys to conceal the truth from Rishi Kapoor - is lame and bizarre. Ditto for the romance between Akshay and Anushka; it comes across as half-baked and looks tame. Even the members of the family, most of them, have ill-defined characters. Fortunately, these deficiencies get camouflaged as the father and son get set for an emotional showdown in the pre-climax. From this point onwards, right till the euphoric victory, the film reaches its pinnacle.

PATIALA HOUSE is an underdog. The expectations are zilch, the odds are not in its favor, but the film throws a pleasant surprise. Go for it!

At Patiala House lives the Kahlon family ruled by Bauji [Rishi Kapoor]. They follow his diktats as he tries to hold onto his 'Indian values' in the land of the goras. The younger generation at Patiala House wants to assert themselves and follow their dreams, but is held back by their respect and love for Bauji and the shining example of Bauji's eldest son, Parghat Singh Kahlon aka Gattu [Akshay Kumar].

Gattu's decision to turn cricketer and play for England is unacceptable to Bauji, who tears his dream apart right in front of his eyes. A dejected Gattu decides to live the life that his father forces upon him. Gattu genuinely cares and respects his father's opinion, so much that he is prepared to let his own dream be sacrificed in the process. Will Bauji loosen his hold and let the youngsters find their own dreams, instead of following his? Will Gattu get a second chance to live his life?

There's no denying that the story of PATIALA HOUSE reminds you of Gurinder Chadha's BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM, wherein Parminder Nagra, as the second-generation Sikh girl, defied her parents' wishes to play football. However, PATIALA HOUSE is a film about attachments, affiliations and familial bonding, about respect and trying to adjust to contradictory values that generally crop up when one relocates to another country. More importantly, it's about dreams and aspirations and how fate offers you a second chance in life. PATIALA HOUSE is not one of those atypical mass entertainers that focuses only on providing entertainment, while the story takes a complete backseat. This one, thankfully, has a story to tell. And an interesting one, frankly. Also, as much as this film focuses on the relationship between the father and son, it also weaves the popular sport well in the narrative and that makes for an interesting viewing. However, the cricket factor is subsidiary; the focal point remains the father-son conflict. Nikhil Advani ensures that beneath the familial bonding and curbed aspirations, there's an underlined message as well: Chase you dreams, don't give up, you live only once!

The film has some striking moments and I would like to single out the ones when writers Nikhil Advani and Anvita Dutt Guptan take you back in time to a younger Rishi Kapoor and Akshay's childhood. The racist attacks and how it impacts the family is straight out of life. Besides, the vital sequence in the film - Rishi commands the young Akshay [enacted by Usman Qureshi] to abandon his plans of playing for England - is utmost convincing. The climax, of course, is powerful and the hallmark of this enterprise. It evokes emotions on dual levels - when the father decides to watch his son play cricket and also when Akshay wins the match for England. Ideally, the film should've concluded on this euphoric note, but the song thereafter lessens the impact of the exhilarated climax.

Director Nikhil Advani regains his position as a compelling storyteller, which he had lost post SALAAM-E-ISHQ and CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA. He illustrates his proficiency in the dramatic portions, handling the father-son sequences with dexterity. The soundtrack [music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy] is melodic, with 'Kyun Main Jaagoon' being the best track of the enterprise. The song conveys the spirit of the film well. The placement of 'Laungda Lashkara' may be debatable, but the song is tuneful nonetheless. The background score [also by S-E-L] is classy. Santosh Thundiyil's cinematography is stunning.

Gattu is a character anyone can relate to or empathize with and to portray that convincingly is indeed difficult, but Akshay plays this part with rare maturity. It's a complex role to portray since he has to conceal the emotional turmoil he is experiencing within, yet wear a cheery expression against all adversities. The viewer is sure to connect directly and indirectly with this character, even if he/she may have not have experienced what he does in this film. Also, Akshay ensures that his bowling skills look absolutely realistic on screen and he does justice to the sport.

Rishi Kapoor, cast as the patriarch of a family settled in U.K., gets it right yet again. Note his dialect and body language in particular. As Bauji, the veteran actor delivers a sparkling performance, which would rank amongst his superlative work when you look back at his illustrious career. Dimple Kapadia doesn't really get much opportunity initially, but is wonderful in the penultimate sequence when she confronts Rishi Kapoor.

Anushka is an integral part of the story. She is Akshay's shoulder, an unconditional support for him and she fits perfectly into her character. Amongst the plethora of actors, Armaan Kirmani [as Akshay's brother] is excellent, Jeneva Talwar [as Armaan's pregnant wife, Akshay's sis-in-law] is top notch and Usman Qureshi [essaying Akshay's earlier years] is natural. Tinnu Anand is competent, as always. Prem Chopra is okay. Soni Razdan does a fair job. The kid who plays Anushka's brother is smart.

On the whole, PATIALA HOUSE is a film about attachments, affiliations and familial bonding. It's a compelling watch, more for its drama and histrionics than anything else. It's a film that explores the father-son relationship and not just those in India, but around the world should be able to relate to the predicament depicted in this film. The hallmark of the film is the merging of its engaging drama with cricket and that's what makes this product stand out from the earlier Akshay starrers. Especially its penultimate 30 minutes, which is the brightest spot of this enterprise. If the movie succeeds in pulling the heartstrings of the moviegoer, it would propel Akshay back in the same position he once was after the victory of NAMASTEY LONDON and SINGH IS KINNG.

Tanu Weds Manu - Music Review

There are limited expectations from the music of Tanu Weds Manu as the film hasn't been projected as a musical. Also, since there aren't many recognised names attached to the music department (composer Krsna, lyricist Rajshekhar), one doesn't quite know what to expect. However, since the film has a small town setting to it, one does expect the kind of score that would have a rustic flavour to it.

Though one doesn't know what exactly would arrive in the album, Tanu Weds Manu does boast of a cracker of a start with 'Sadi Gali' having all in it to turn into a smash hit in quick time. A Punjabi track by Lehmber Hussainpuri which is different from the routine 'bhangra' tracks, 'Sadi Gali' is a fun celebration number that hooks you in the first listening itself. A foot tapping number with a quintessential desi Punjabi flavour to it that carries the potential to find popularity wherever and whenever it is played, it will find good acceptance especially up North.

The album shifts track soon after with Mohit Chauhan humming around in his characteristic tone. A love song, 'Yun Hi' is about a guy professing his love and expecting the girl to nod in agreement as well. With easy on ears lyrics by Rajshekhar, the song maintains an overall simplicity in its tone and sails through smoothly. Though 'Yun Hi' is not the kind of song that has chartbuster written to it (due to an overall laidback presentation), it is harmless when given a hearing. Meanwhile Ujjaini can also be heard in the background as a backing vocalist.

Next to arrive is a Sufi number 'Rangrez' by Krsna. The longest track in the album which lasts over six minutes, 'Rangrez' has a core essence of love to it and is situational in appeal. Also, it can be expected to play a multiple times in the film's narrative. With an unadulterated presentation sans any external influences that would have threatened to take away from the traditional flavour that it carries, 'Rangrez' would primarily be appreciated by the followers of Sufi music. Later the song also arrives in another version which is rendered by Puranchand Wadali and Pyare Lal Wadali.

By this time around though one does start missing another terrific number like 'Sadi Gali'. However the album keeps it's soft and sober mood that had started with 'Yun Hi'. Resultantly the song that arrives is 'Piya' which actually turns out to be the best of the lot since 'Sadi Gali'. Sung by Roop Kumar Rathod, 'Piya' has a semi-classical flavour to it and shows the range of composer Krsna who spins a tune which is extremely easy on ears. With an old world charm to it, 'Piya' should sound even better when seen along with the film.

There is fun that returns to the proceedings with 'Mannu Bhaiya' which immediately reminds one of 'Genda Phool' [Delhi 6]. Call it the North Indian influence here but the combination of melody and rhythm is on the same lines as the one that was created by A.R. Rahman a couple of years back. Sung by Sunidhi Chauhan who goes restrained in this celebration number where friends and families of the bride and groom get together to tease the couple, 'Mannu Bhaiya' is yet another 'desi' track that maintains its essence. While Ujjaini Mukherjee and Niladri Debnath give Suidhi some support behind the mike, Manjeera, Rakhi Chand and Vivek Naik are the backing vocalists.

Last to arrive is a fun number 'Jugni' which is as Punjabi as it gets and gains that slot in the album which is reserved for a chartbuster. Even though the song's duration is a mere 3 minutes here, Mika makes it worth it by letting his hair down in this dance number that should be pronto aired across all music channels to gain added visibility.

Tanu Weds Manu would have settled down to just being a decent album if not for 'Sadi Gali' and 'Jugni'. These are the two numbers that acts as the pillars of Tanu Weds Manu that should not just add value to the album but also help the film gain added visibility in weeks to come. While 'Mannu Bhaiyya' and 'Piya' add further variety to the album, it's the aforementioned dance numbers that are most enjoyable.

Yeh Saali Zindagi - Movie Review

A while ago, while chatting him up for my show on TV, someone queried Sudhir Mishra as to why Hindi film industry fails to produce qualitative movies, unlike the 1960s and 1970s, which have tremendous recall value even in the present day? I markedly remember, Mishra didn't blink an eyelid while answering this one: "That's because most producers are not literate enough to understand scripts that could elevate the standards of Hindi films. Film-making for them is limited to the weekend business these days." The proclamation stayed with me!

When you saunter into a cineplex to watch a Sudhir Mishra film, it's given that this maverick film-maker will serve you non-formulaic stuff. As a viewer, I liked some of his efforts [IS RAAT KI SUBAH NAHIN, HAZAARON KHWAISHEIN AISI], but a few didn't live up to my expectations. His new film, YEH SAALI ZINDAGI, has already generated the buzz for a variety of reasons. It's 'controversial' or 'provocative' title being the key one.

Before I proceed further, let me tell you that the title is of immense significance to the film. Sure, it may sound offensive [the Censor Board chief too raised a hue and cry, asking Mishra to change the title of the film], but why does a commonly used word ['saali'] create an uproar? Actually, I am quite amused at the brouhaha. In our society, we refer to the sister-in-law as saali, don't we? Besides, almost three decades ago, the Dilip Kumar starrer SAGINA had a very popular song [which we recall to this day], 'Saala Main To Sahab Ban Gaya' and more recently, 'Pappu Can't Dance Saala' from JAANE TU YA JAANE NA took the nation by storm. Even recently, the word 'Saali' was used in a song from NO ONE KILLED JESSICA, 'Aali Re Saali Re'. Also, when you view YEH SAALI ZINDAGI, you realize that 'saali' has been used as a symbol to the vagaries of life and not as a derogatory, abusive, swear word. It's not slang, but a flare-up of expression.

It requires a fearless and courageous film-maker [Prakash Jha] to back an audacious film-maker [Sudhir Mishra] to create a motion picture that defies stereotype. The risk involved is colossal, but the satisfaction of having created a product that has tremendous shelf life is incalculable. YEH SAALI ZINDAGI is a striking case in point.

In an industry where mediocre scripts rule and funds are readily available for projects only if 'saleable stars' are ready to sign on the dotted line, in an industry where tried and tested formula and shortcuts have become a habit, YEH SAALI ZINDAGI comes as a courageous attempt. It may not be this fiercely independent film-maker's most accomplished effort, but it has the guts and valor to narrate an innovative story with a brand new approach.

At the same time, I'd like to add that the content is quirky, the relationships depicted in the film are complex and twisted and the format of narrating the story [including the edit pattern] is poles apart from what one is used to watching in the customary Hindi film. Even the spoken language is harsh, crude, with lots of expletives and swear words thrown in. But that's the beauty of this film. It walks a different path.

Final word? Sudhir Mishra is back in form. You need a strong belly to stomach this one!

Arun [Irrfan Khan] has to save Priti [Chitrangda Singh], the woman he loves, but for that he first has to save the man Priti loves, Shyam [Vipul Gupta], the future son-in-law of a powerful Minister. Meanwhile, time is running out for Kuldeep [Arunoday Singh], the young gangster who is on his last job as his wife [Aditi Rao Hydari] is threatening to walk out on him and he begins to suspect she is leaving him to go into the arms of another man.

The job has gone haywire for it is still unknown to Kuldeep that the Minister's daughter's engagement with Shyam is off and now she doesn't care whether Shyam lives or dies and more importantly, neither does the Minister who Kuldeep hoped would pay the ransom. Priti finds herself inextricably caught in this mess and Arun has to save her life. But for that he has to risk everything and put his own life at stake, he wonders why he should do it at all, if she still loves another man. He's torn, but love knows no reason.

Sudhir Mishra has worked on a taut screenplay to ensure that at no point in those 2 hours monotony sets in. Multiple stories are running concurrently, but unlike other films, these stories are linked to each other till the very conclusion. There're twists aplenty and the punches that come at regular intervals startle you since they don't follow the set blueprint that most Hindi films follow.

But the film is not without blemishes. One, Mishra should've ensured that the narrative unfolded in the most simplistic manner, for there are sequences which leave behind queries and come across as difficult to comprehend. Since the film has too many characters and too many incidents taking place in the course of a few days, the treatment had to be simplistic, without confusing the viewer, who's seated on the fence and is overseeing the proceedings. Also, the inconsistent pacing is a deterrent. Besides, you find sequences that just add to the run time and have not much significance to the main plot whatsoever.

The climax would meet with mixed reactions, especially the 'bullet' sequence. It would've worked big time in a Manmohan Desai film, but in view of the fact that Sudhir Mishra walks the realistic path, it's a bit difficult to absorb. Nonetheless, it's a brilliant way to end the film!

The soundtrack of YEH SAALI ZINDAGI bears a different sound, especially the title track. Sachin Krishn's cinematography is perfect [the locales of Delhi and outskirts are well captured], but the only problem is that most of the shots have been dimly lit up, which may not be a problem at city plexes having good projection systems, but would pose a problem at smaller towns for sure. Something that even Vishal Bhardwaj had agreed with my viewpoint during KAMINEY. Dialogue [Mishra and Manu Rishi], like I pointed out earlier, are straight out of everyday conversation. The hoi polloi in particular would relish the cuss words, which are generously interwoven in the narrative. Background score is electrifying and the editing [most parts] makes the goings-on impactful.

YEH SAALI ZINDAGI is embellished with gifted actors and as always, it's Irrfan who leads the pack with a superb performance, holding your attention from the very start. He's aggressive when required [with Saurabh Shukla], but docile when handling matters of heart [Chitrangda Singh]. Chitrangda looks stunning and matches up to Irrfan in most parts. In fact, her screen persona is so strong you can't take your eyes off this lady.

Arunoday continues to climb the ladder with every film. The youngster excels in his part and stands out not only because of his towering personality, but also because he's a complete natural. Aditi Rao Hydari is very good. Saurabh Shukla is an accomplished actor and he proves it yet again. Sushant Singh is first-rate, Vipin Sharma is utmost convincing, Yashpal Sharma is remarkable and Prashant Narayanan is superb, as always. Vipul Gupta is another talent to watch out for.

On the whole, YEH SAALI ZINDAGI is a striking example of new age cinema. A daring film with a brand new approach, it's impulsive and engaging with skilful direction and power-packed performances as its strong points. This is one more solid attempt that takes the graph of Hindi cinema to a greater level.

7 Saat Khoon Maaf - Music Review

Hype came when Theatrical trailers arrived at screens. Most expected movie of Priyanka Chopra showed once again hope for another masterpiece like FASHION. We listened DARLING in the trailer and later it's telecast-ed. It can be easily said that Darling's the first finest pieces we have heard in 2011 and so on expectations aroused for another mind blowing Vishal Bharadwaj album like "Kaminey", "Ishqiya" or "Omkara".

Carrying a Spanish feel in heart, DARLING's all set to burn the charts this moment. The two phenomenal female voices of Rekha Bharadwaj & Usha Uthup have just made the fire spread away to most far position. A spectacular composition and catchy lyrics by Gulzar have done a splendid job. "Darling" is the song of the moment. If Darling's slowed up in tempo at times and new lyrics have been added to it to make it a bit more beautiful, then you got a similar song to it that even has a nice title, DOOSRI DARLING. "The Darling series" has surely benefited the whole album.

To describe Sussana's romance with a muslim poet, BEKARAAN can be said the perfect choice of song. Strongly close to "MADHNO" from "LAMHAA", Bekaraan has a sweet & calm rhythm that can easily bind you in its spell. Sweet vocal by Vishal Bharadwaj himself, he has easily succeeded in composing a beautiful romantic number.

We see K.K. in a complete new avatar in O MAMA, a pulsar romantic track. With Rocking composition & catchy lyrics like "Sar Ko Aksar Nochta Hai Dil Mera", "Ek Meow Si Ladki", the song sounds even more better. On the whole, O Mama is far far successful to create a super impact on listeners and has K.K. written all oevr it as the reason for it's sensation.

With a Sufi Feeling in it, AWAARA makes arrival in the soundtrack and Vishal Bharadwaj has made the right desicion to choose Master Saleem as the vocalist as he is a perfectionist in these kind of tracks. Awaara has a melancholy strain in it and might be used in the background of any scene in the movie. Allover, it's purely a situational number that is quite impressive.

Pure & melodious romanticism enters the list when TERE LIYE, the most impressive song of the album enters. It surely carries the theme of Sussana in it under the magical vocal of Suresh Wadkar. Impressive & touchy lyrics by Gulzar are just the icing on the cake. After a long period, Suresh Wadkar delivers such a splendid song, Thanks to Vishal Bharadwaj. Will remind you about another sweet masterpiece "AB MUJHE KOI" from "ISHQIYA" by Vishal himself.

Suraj Jagan, the most rocking singer today whose throat has no limits to scream. If you are planning to compose a wild & acid based song, then you will have to make it sung by him. DIL DIL HAI purely signifies any live performance in the whole movie and Vishal has wisely appointed Suraj in it. A wild, completely rocking, full of electric guitars, drums and beats, this 185 minutes long track will impress young listeners most.

At last arrives a calm and strange track, YESHU that is sung by Rekha Bharadwaj. If you have heard "BADI DHEERE JALI" from "ISHQIYA", then you will find much similarity in both of them. Allover, a fair listen.

Vishal Bharadwaj albums always signify different tastes in a single dish and 7 Khoon Maaf is not different from it. 7 Khoon Maaf has ability to be another musical success in Priyanka & Vishal both's filmography. Delivered, as expected. We Hope Vishal Bharadwaj does justice with Ruskin Bond's "Sussana's Seven Husbands" in his movie. Final Word? Not 1, Not 2, Not Even 3, 4 Stars Maaf For the music of 7 Khoon Maaf.

Yeh Saali Zindagi - Music Review

One looks forward to getting surprised with the soundtrack of Yeh Saali Zindagi. After all the film has been directed by Sudhir Mishra whose films invariably boast of good, though different, music. They may or may not find instant appeal but then they are remembered long after the film has come and gone. Case in point being Is Raat Ki Subah Nahi, Chameli and of course Hazaron Khwaishein Aisi. His last release Khoya Khoya Chand may not be playing till date while Tera Kya Hoga Johny never saw a release. Still one definitely wants to check out what does first time composer Nishat Khan have to offer here along with lyricist Swanand Kirkire.

As expected, it's the title song 'Yeh Saali Zindagi' which kick starts the proceedings in the album. A rare track that features both Sunidhi Chauhan and Shilpa Rao, it by itself becomes special due to these two singers with a distinct voice coming together behind the mike along with Kunal Ganjawala. A track that starts off as a soft track, it picks up pace within a minute to give it a pacy feel, only to return into being a slow number all over again. With hevay Western influence to it, 'Yeh Saali Zindagi' is a well written, composed and sung track that delivers what one expected from the soundtrack of this Sudhir Mishra film.

Due to it being a superb composition in the offing, Yeh Saali Zindagi deservingly finds two more versions going for it in the album. While one of them is an all-female version with Sunidhi and Shilpa pairing up all over again, there is also a bonus version with Abhishek Ray going solo. While the former follows the same mood and form as the one that was heard earlier at the beginning of the album, the latter is a funky version which takes a different texture altogether. Though the male version (with quite a few English lyrics in it) isn't bad, one would still want to go back to the original for its intrinsic quality appeal to it.

Just when one thought that composer Nishat Khan would keep Yeh Saali Zindagi in an offbeat zone comes a celebration track in the form of 'Sararara'. The kind of song which can be comfortably slotted into a quintessential Bollywood track which is set in a 'ched chaad' mode, especially during the festivities of 'Holi', 'Sararara' is heard twice. While the first is helmed by Sukhwinder Singh, the second version has Javed Ali taking charge and doing quite well too. A decent sounding track which doesn't quite have a long lasting appeal to it and seems to have been included primarily for reasons leading to commercial appeal, 'Sararara' should do well with the film.

The moment Shilpa Rao goes 'tu ru ru ru ru', one knows that here is one song which one was expecting from Yeh Saali Zindagi especially after listening to the title track. 'Dil Dar-Ba-Dar' has a fusion appeal to it with elements of 'sufi' music interspersed with Jazz and Blue, hence leading to an interesting composition in the offing. While Javed Ali plays a supporting role in the song, 'Dil Dar-Ba-Dar' stays on to be entirely a Shilpa Rao track that can be heard multiple times without one getting tired of it.

Shilpa Rao and Javed Ali return with 'Ishq Tere Jalwe' which has the kind of start that reminds one of 'Bheegi Bheegi Si' [Gangster]. Nevertheless, the moment Javed Ali starts his rendition, one knows that 'Ishq Tere Jalwe' is an entirely different composition. Though the song starts off on a rather average note, the moment there is emphasis on the word 'Ishq' followed by Shilpa's arrival behind the mike; you know that this one too is a number worth listening. Yet again, the song follows the same mood as evidenced in Yeh Saali Zindagi and 'Dil Dar-Ba-Dar' to give the soundtrack a theme appeal.

Finally arrives 'Kaise Kahein Alvida' which is a Javed Ali solo. This one takes the album into a different zone as it has an Indian classical base to it and is pretty much the kind of track that lonely lovers listen to in the night. If you are looking for the kind of song which has an elevating appeal, this is not the one. However for those searching for something which is totally non-filmy and can be played on in a repeat mode and forgotten after the lights are switched off, 'Kaise Kahein Alvida' should do well.

Yeh Saali Zindagi isn't the kind of album which finds instant attention for itself, courtesy it's unconventional set up. Yes, there are songs out there which do impress and actually come with a long lasting appeal. However there is a lot that depends upon the appreciation that the film garners at the box office or later through word of mouth amongst the audience, something that resulted in Hazaron Khwaishein Aisi become a cult film amongst a segment of audience. Nishat Khan and Swanand Kirkire do well but one has to wait for the film to release and the following it gets before his music can be termed commercially successful.

Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji - Movie Review

Hindi cinema has never been short of movies which abound in humor. In fact, there's a barrage of funny films these days. Whether it's the gentle humor that keeps us smiling constantly [on the lines of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee's films] or the incisive and sharp wit of TERE BIN LADEN, DO DOONI CHAAR and PHAS GAYE RE OBAMA or the boisterous laughathons attempted by David Dhawan, Anees Bazmee and Priyadarshan, we've enjoyed our share of laughs. But I genuinely feel that the comedy scene in Bollywood is slowly, but perceptibly changing, veering more towards realism and this is exactly what we get to watch in Madhur Bhandarkar's new outing DIL TOH BACCHA HAI JI.

So we associate Madhur with somber/serious cinema, tackling issues that concern us, right from CHANDNI BAR to JAIL. By now famous for his socially relevant, hard-hitting films that take potshots at the upper crust, Madhur changes tracks with this one. DIL TOH BACCHA HAI JI is a light entertainer at heart, but there's something about the landed gentry in this one as well. It exposes the dual lives they lead.

Without beating around the bush, let me pronounce that I was skeptical about Madhur's abilities when it came to handling light films. Oh yes, he has a terrific sense of humor in real life. On reel, he's synonymous with hard-hitting movies, isn't it? So what prompted this National Award winning film-maker to enter a new terrain - humor? I am sure, it has something to do with discovering newer horizons and taking on unexplored territories. So does the gamble work? Are Madhur's claims - of following Hrishi-da's footsteps with this one - mere hollow words or does he deliver?

Much like Madhur's earlier films, DIL TOH BACCHA HAI JI is about real people, situations and problems. Except that the emotion isn't sorrow and the theme isn't dark this time. Irrespective of how his films are received, the one thing Madhur is known for is the unconventional story he wants the viewers to absorb. DIL TOH BACCHA HAI JI isn't about three couples and how they discover love, it's about how these three guys who find love, but… let's leave it at that! Else, the twist in the tale will be in public domain.

The camaraderie between Ajay, Emraan and Omi and the unpredictable storyline post intermission is the driving point of this motion picture. In fact, if the first half is laced with light moments, the second half is where the twists-n-turns crop up and each of those stories get nurtured in the process. But there's a flipside too and that's the choice of actors in the finale. Ideally, the makers could've done with known faces in the end. It would've only been an icing on the cake. Also, there are a few rough edges in the narrative, but not the type that would make a big dent.

Also, I'd like to state, it left me wondering as to what prompted the censors to pass the motion picture with an 'Adults Only' certification? I would say that some of the recent films have had far more objectionable and explosive content than this one. Besides, Indian television is full of repugnant and obnoxious material which everyone has free access to. I guess, our censor board needs to be a little more liberal in view of the fact that times have changed and it's about time their attitudes towards cinema also changes.

Final word? This one is amongst Madhur's most accomplished works!

DIL TOH BACCHA HAI JI is a slice of life film revolving around Naren [Ajay Devgn], Abhay [Emraan Hashmi] and Milind [Omi Vaidya] and their encounters with love.

A listless Naren, well in his thirties and going through a divorce [Rituparna Sengupta], falls in love with a vibrant and bubbly June [Shazahn Padamsee], who has just stepped out of her teens. Milind, a poet and an idealistic lover, is enamored by an ambitious and practical Gunjan [Shraddha Das], who is determined to follow her dreams. A charming casanova Abhay starts feeling an alien emotion called love when he feels increasingly drawn towards Nikki [Shruti Haasan], a modern girl who knows her needs and speaks her mind.

With its real characters and relatable situations, the film takes a witty look at love and the extent people will go to evade it or attain it.

DIL TOH BACCHA HAI JI seizes your attention gradually. One of the reasons could be because Madhur narrates three stories concurrently. Ajay, who portrays the life of a harried bank manager going through a 'mid-life crisis', is very compelling. Watch him in sequences when he sets his eyes on his new office assistant [Shazahn]. Consider the character of Omi, a true-blue romantic, working as a matchmaker, who has never been able to find a soul mate himself. One comes across such people in real life as well. And, of course, there's Emraan, who uses affluent and well heeled women as a stepping stone to attain the resources and luxuries of life. His sequences with Tisca Chopra add spice to the proceedings. Ditto for the women in the film. Especially Shraddha and Tisca, who use men to their advantage. Very real characters. In fact, the variety of love and relationships that we get to watch here is so diverse from what we have been subjected to in Hindi movies since time immemorial. As a matter of fact, each of us must have experienced the varied emotions depicted in this film at some juncture in our lives.

While watching DIL TOH BACCHA HAI JI, I recalled a much-acclaimed Basu Chatterjee movie SHAUKEEN, which had three lecherous older men trying to get naughty in their elderly age. Of course, both the films cannot be judged against each other except in view of the fact that both films have three middle-aged men and three elderly gentlemen [in the case of SHAUKEEN] trying to explore the love and lust aspect of their lives. Even the treatment and conversations in DIL TOH BACCHA HAI JI are out of everyday life. It's more like a discussion happening between any three normal, everyday guys even when they discuss the opposite ***. There is no dialogue-baazi as such, it is just a normal tete-a-tete happening.

Madhur's attempt of dabbling in the comedy genre may appear dicey for a lot of his detractors, since he's known to be proficient in the art of creating serious/dark movies. But comedy is serious business and Madhur gets it right on most occasions. Let me add, this is not one of those imperceptive and dull-witted films that make an attempt to tickle your funny bone every five minutes. Madhur has interwoven some serious moments in the narrative, which makes it a slice of life film, but which sticks to the commercial format.

The screenplay writing is absorbing at most times. Having said that, I'd like to add that the writing could've been tighter at places. Shraddha's sudden exit leaves you mystified. Also, the film could've done with better names [read, eye candy] in the finale, when the three guys set out for Goa. The climax was already a highpoint and one definitely expected a better culmination. Also, the film could've been tightened in the editing suite.

The expectations from its music are on the higher side, especially after the success of Pritam-Ajay-Emraan's last venture ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI. But the problem is that it does not offer much variety, unlike OUATIM. 'Abhi Kuch Dino Se' and 'Tere Bin' are my picks. Cinematography [Ravi Walia] is up to the mark. Sanjay Chhel's dialogue are witty and just perfect for this genre.

Ajay proves his adaptability and versatility yet again. Having impressed us adequately in the past, Ajay portrays a character that takes you back to a very popular actor of his times, Amol Palekar. Ajay underplays his part effortlessly. Emraan, popular also for his skirt chaser image on screen, plays an obsessive philanderer here and he's electrifying. In fact, he spices up the proceedings every time he appears on screen. The role assigned to him is an extension of what he's attempted in the past, yet he interprets it so differently. Omi Vaidya's character gets subdued initially, but it must be said that the earnestness with which he portrays his part makes him endearing. He's remarkable in the sequence when he breaks down while reading the letter.

Shazahn looks like a doll and gets the character right. In fact, she adds so much freshness to the proceedings. Shraddha gives the right shades to her character. She's most convincing when she takes Omi for a ride initially. Shruti appears late in the film, but she leaves an impact nonetheless. Her scenes with Emraan are amusing. Tisca Chopra is superb, especially in the sequence when Emraan confesses that he's in love with someone else. Mukesh Tiwari is first-rate in a brief role. Aditya Raj Kapoor is fair. Rituparna Sengupta does well. Harward Rosemeyer leaves a mark in the funeral sequence.

On the whole, DIL TOH BACCHA HAI JI is a feel good, light-hearted rom-com, a slice of life film which the populace and the regular lay person would relate to. Madhur Bhandarkar changes tracks from his trademark women-oriented movies on contemporary issues to a rom-com, which has the unmistakable Bhandarkar signature to it, and emerges triumphant in his new fangled endeavor. The film carries a tagline that reads 'Love grows… Men don't', which seems most appropriate after one has watched it. DIL TOH BACCHA HAI JI, with its bona fide characters and pertinent situations, promises to bring a smile to your face and cheer you up. I strongly recommended it!

In the 1970s and 1980s, Bollywood churned out hardcore masala films by the dozens. Those films appealed to the 'Balcony Class' as well as the 'Stall Audience' (terminology used for dissecting the audience then). Even today, films like SHOLAY, AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY, NAMAK HALAAL, DON, ROTI KAPADA AUR MAKAAN, DHARAM-VEER, MUQADDAR KA SIKANDAR et al, the most popular films of that era, appeal to the guy riding an auto rickshaw as well as the CEO of a multinational company. Masala films, in my opinion, can never go out of vogue. The gargantuan success of films like DABANGG and GOLMAAL 3 last year endorses this viewpoint.

The reason why masala films tick to this date is because they have the power to entertain. I've often heard my non-film friends comment that cinema, for them, symbolizes an outing with their family. They want to be transported to a world of make-believe in those 3 hours and forget their worries/sorrows/trials/tribulations in the process. YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA does that and does so most convincingly.

YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA is a tribute to the cinema of yore. Every rule in the book that made hardcore commercial films major money spinners then have been read minutely and integrated in the plotline of this one. Generally, movie makers often claim that their film is hatke, that it boasts of stuff that the viewer hasn't watched on screen before, but YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA makes no such claims. It is old wine bottled and packaged in a new avatar.

What makes YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA work? A variety of reasons, if you ask me. One, watching the Deol parivaar in one frame is an experience in itself. Two, drama, emotions and light moments are smartly integrated in the narrative. Three, the punches (most of them) are thoroughly enjoyable. Four, the entertainment quotient. Most importantly, it delivers what it promised in its promos: Laughter and amusement. It's a film that caters to the aam aadmi, who's keen on having a good time at the movies. It's definitely NOT for the hard-nosed critics or fakes who masquerade as champions of art house cinema.

But YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA has a flipside too: The romantic sequences are a bore and the music, barring the title track and 'Charha De Rang', is a earsore. Even the climax fight is very, very formulaic. But, thankfully, the plusses outnumber the minusses by leaps and bounds here. The second half, to be specific, salvages the show to a major extent.

Final word? The fans of Deols, even those who had drifted away, are sure to lap it up in a big way. Triple masti, triple mazaa, triple magic... Go, get entertained without using your intellect. The film begins in Canada, travels to Banaras and eventually makes its way to Punjab. The father-son duo of Dharam Singh and Gajodhar Singh (Dharmendra and Bobby Deol) are the biggest con-men in Banaras. Their happy-go-lucky existence involves drinking and pulling off hilarious cons on unsuspecting people. The only hitch in their perfect albeit notorious life arrives in the form of Paramveer Singh Dhillon (Sunny Deol).

A brawny and honest NRI from Vancouver, Paramveer lands up in Banaras claiming to be Gajodhar's elder brother separated at childhood. The duo willingly accepts Paramveer into their fold only to exploit his muscle power to serve their con games.

Meanwhile, Gajodhar falls in love with Sahiba (Kulraj Randhawa), a beautiful girl from Punjab. As their romance reaches its peak, her brothers (Anupam Kher and company) arrive and forcibly take her away. Paramveer saves the day with a crazy plan to win the girl back for Gajodhar, which leads them to the rustic heartlands of Punjab.

Like I pointed out at the very outset, YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA borrows from here, there, everywhere. You can draw parallels with Mirza-Sahiba, the legendary folklore that is popular to this date. Memories of BUNTY AUR BABLI and also DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE come alive while watching this one. The climax, of course, is straight out of 1970s cinema. In fact, writer Jasvinder Singh Bath makes it a point to offer the viewer a new punch every 15/20 minutes. Of course, some are enjoyable, some aren't.

From the writing point of view, the first half leaves you with mixed feelings. The undercurrent of emotions is electrifying and how one wishes director Samir Karnik and the writer would've tapped this aspect, instead of wasting precious celluloid on the romance between Bobby and Kulraj Randhawa. On the brighter side, the action at the start - Sunny saves Dharmendra and Bobby from Johny Lever's goons - is dazzlingly executed. It's aimed at the masses entirely. Also, a number of comic scenes tickle your funny bone in this hour.

The film redeems itself in the post-interval portions. The graph zooms upwards the moment the focus shifts from Banaras to Punjab. The introduction of Anupam Kher's character, his assorted brothers, the sequence when Sunny and Bobby ask for Kulraj's hand in marriage, the arrival of Dharmendra and also Sunny's Canadian wife Emma Brown Garrett subsequently, Sunny's speech in English at the election rally... the fun never stops. Of course, the villain's track (Puneet Issar) is an obstacle and the climax fight, like I pointed out earlier, tries so hard to be funny. Also, the film could've done with trimming.

Director Samir Karnik has targeted the film at the hoi polloi and that segment of moviegoers would love his effort. In fact, the film has several mass-appealing moments that would either send the masses in a tizzy of excitement or make them clap in delight. However, the clap-trap moments are more towards the second hour. Writer Jasvinder Singh Bath seems inspired by the cinema of Manmohan Desai and Prakash Mehra and if one overlooks the hiccups in the first hour, his screen writing does justice to the genre of the film. The songs aren't appealing, except for the remix version of 'Yamla Pagla Deewana', the yesteryear hit and 'Charha De Rang', which is melodious to the core. 'Tinku Jiya' should appeal to the front-benchers. The cinematography (Kabir Lal) is captivating; the lush green locales of Punjab are well captured on moving picture. Dialogue are well worded. The action sequences (Analarasu) are deftly executed.

Casting the Deols together is a trump card and their real-life bonding reflects delightfully on screen. Dharmendra is endearing and charming as ever. He enacts his part with effortless ease. Sunny is wonderfully restrained. The audience will love him as a sober guy and the ones who expect the brawny star to flex his muscles or raise his voice (the angry man persona) won't be disappointed either. Bobby is equally convincing, matching up to his iconic father and brother every time they appear on screen together. Kulraj looks beautiful and makes an extremely confident big screen debut.

Anupam Kher is outstanding. This is amongst his most lovable acts. Johny Lever is funny in a brief role. Nafisa Ali is graceful as ever. Sucheta Khanna is first-rate. Amit Mistry does very well. Mukul Dev should stage a comeback to movies with this one. He's too good! Himanshu Malik is okay. Puneet Issar is wasted. Emma Brown Garrett (Sunny's wife) is amazing. Ditto for the two child artists, enacting the role of Sunny's kids. Ajay Devgn's voiceover at the start sets the tone for the film.

On the whole, YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA is a hardcore mass entertainer that fulfils the expectations of the aam junta. Those who love Deols will adore this one, while those who don't, won't ignore it either. The film works big time for its mass-appealing second half and loads of entertainment it has to offer. The target audience is the masses and it is this segment of movie-going audience that should carry this film to success. Business at single screens should be exceptional, while the film should set new benchmarks in North India (Punjab specifically). Internationally too, the film should perform the best in U.K., U.S.A. and Canada.

Patiala House - Music Review

Without an iota of doubt, expectations surmount whenever a filmmaker like Nikhil Advani, who has always been a connoisseur of excellent music, teams up with music giants of the stature of T-Series and so is the case in their latest venture, PATIALA HOUSE. The film stars "Khiladi" Akshay Kumar whose films have always boasted of chartbusting music and Anushka Sharma who too has been very lucky as far as music of her films is concerned. And it is just a coincidence that the music of both their latest, TEES MAAR KHAN and BAND BAAJA BAARAAT respectively is topping the charts presently. And we are quite sure that their next, PATIALA HOUSE, will follow suit. The reason being the multitalented Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy who have been assigned the task of handling the music department this time too, very much like Nikhil's last three ventures, KAL HO NA HO, SALAAM-E-ISHQ and CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA.

Since the film is about a UK based Sikh family, it's but natural that the music will have heavy Punjabi influences and the very first song, "Laungda Lashkara", is one such number. Hard Kaur, who also features in the film, spices up the mood and sends the tempo racing as she starts the proceedings with her much loved characteristic rap which features intermittently during the whole song and is one of the highlights of the track. Jassi ("Dil Legayi Kudi.." fame) is in cracking form as he renders this very different Punjabi love song, along with the sweet sounding Mahalaxmi Iyer, who modulates her vocals to match Anushka's husky ones. The tune that Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy choose is very rhythmic and foot tapping and the arrangements are not too harsh and loud, after all it's SEL and they never go over the top! It's after quite a while that we have had a sweet Punjabi favoured love song that we fall in love with instantly (like in LOVE AAJ KAL), one which leaves the listener asking for more. Anvita Dutt deserves credit for conjuring up lyrics that are not heavy duty and has just the right mix of Punjabi, English and Hindi, yet simple and comprehensible, one which most people can understand without taxing their brains. The remix version "Laungda Lashkara" by Harry Anand is more pacy making the song even more dance oriented targeting the youth and GenX.

All those who have loved S-E-L in their last chartbusting yet classy outing, MY NAME IS KHAN, this one is for them as the next song is pretty much in the same corridor as "Noor-E-Khuda". Soothing piano notes, just the right precursor that sets up the somber mood and commences the song, "Kyun Main Jaagoon", a semi-philosophical, introspective, soulful number. Shafqat Amanat Ali is excellent as his vocals convey the cry of anguish of the main protagonist played by Akshay Kumar (who not being allowed to pursue his passion) with ease and aplomb.

The soft flowing melody combined with just the right minimal music arrangements, especially the piano interludes, blend seamlessly with the vocals and make this song a pleasure to listen to. Anvita's lyrics once again deserves brownie points as the crux of the film is conveyed easily through some brilliant words- "Mujhe yun hi karke khwabon se juda, Jaane kahan chhup ke baitha hai khuda."

The song also appears in two more versions. First is "Kyun Main Jaagoon" Unplugged and "Kyun Main Jaagoon" Remix. The unplugged version is for those who like things soft, subtle .with minimal music arrangements, just guitar and piano and crystal clear vocals. The remixed version has been handled classily by Asia Dub Foundation and converts the soft soothing number into a happening track, fit enough for clubs and discotheques.

The title "Rola Pe Gaya" was just an indication that we were in for some rollicking fun in the upcoming track and how right we were because this song has everything that we were expecting and even more! The start is a bit misleading as one gets the impression of a traditional Punjabi "mehdi" wedding number, but Hard Kaur puts things right on track with her superb rap. With S-E-L's "Where's The Party Tonight" (KANK-2006) still popular, here is the follow up to the iconic party number as Shankar gets behind the mike for this fun celebratory track, and one is forced to jive, such is the groovy rhythm of the "dhamaal" track. Master Saleem, Earl and Mahalaxmi Iyer join in the fun with renditions that exude energy. Shades of Lata's evergreen "Rangeela Re" is very evident but the way SEL have used it to suit their style is commendable.

There was no need for a remix version and "Rola Pe Gaya Remix" by Harry Anand can be called space filler but the fun continues here as well so one does not mind at all.

Soft guitar strums evoke feelings of timeless romance as the next song "Aadat Hai Voh" unfolds and this song is nothing short of a marvel, and the reason is that SEL have not followed a beaten path as seemed from the start. The song has contrasting shades of soft love ballad converging into a superb hard rock crescendo and a back up chorus, which is absolutely mind-boggling, a tad, Vishal Bhardwaj style. And after SEL it's our rocker Vishal Dadlani who deserves kudos for an excellent rendition, superlative control over his vocals and magical voice modulations, from soft to husky. Just brilliant. Lyrics too are very good, "Usko banane wala kuch kuch toh behka hoga, Jab bhi padi hogi uspe nazar". A number one can hear over and over again until it becomes an "dat".

Suraj Jagan and Alyssa Mendonsa come behind the microphone for "Baby When You Talk To Me" which is a classy and clever fusion of soft rock (reminiscent of Beatles /Elvis era) and typical SEL melody and they succeed in their effort of providing thorough entertainment. The highlight of the track is the main chorus, "Baby when you talk to me, Manzil mili gali gali" which is also the "mukhda" of the song and as one can make out a light hearted fun filled love ditty. The song also appears as a remix version by Andrew T Mackay (produced and mixed by Shantanu Huldikar) and it's even better than the original. More zing, more fun!

Renowned Punjabi "sufi" singer, Hans Raj Hans(of Dil Tote Tote fame) continues the celebrations in his usual grand style as we come across another wedding track, "Tumba Tumba" (Tumba - A musical instrument, a plucked spike lute used in rural Punjabi folk songs) that sounds straight out of Sooraj Barjatya films (read HUM AAPKE HAIN KAUN). The composition is partly sung in the "qawwali" mode, and that is the best part about this song. Lyrics are full of humour and in parts a bit Punjabish, especially the start, but the rest of the song has simple wordings that fit in the situation, and one can imagine the whole setting of the song through the wordings. Indian musical instruments like "sitar", "ektara" and also harmonium have been used to good effect.

Last up is "Aval Allah", a very popular Sikh devotional song (hymn), which provides just the right finish to a classy album. A brief soul cleansing, spiritually enlighting number that sends the strong message of equality of all and is rendered superbly by Richa Sharma, whose strong and clear vocals are picture perfect for this track. The Shabad Gurbani, "Aval Allah noor upaaeiaa, Kudrat ke sab bandey, Ek noor te sab jag upajaiaa, Koun bhalae ko mande?" Roughly translated it means, "First Allah Almighty created the light, then by his creative power, he made all mortal beings. From one light, the entire universe welled up, so who is good and who is bad?"

To sum up, one is spellbound as Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy prove once again that whenever they have been entrusted with the task of composing for a big project they always rise to the occasion and deliver the goods. Last year it was Shah Rukh Khan's MY NAME IS KHAN, where they showed their class and versatility, and they have come out with flying colours once again in case of PATIALA HOUSE.

Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji - Music Review

There are good expectations from the music of Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji for multiple reasons. Firstly and most importantly, the film bings together the team of Pritam, Emraan Hashmi and Ajay Devgn which did wonders in Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai earlier this year. Secondly, the film showcases a new side of Madhur Bhandarkar with romcom being the chosen flavour. For his last musical Fashion, he had extracted some fantastic musical score from Salim-Sulaiman. One expects him to have done something similar for his newest endeavour as well. Neelesh Mishra, Kumaar, Sanjay Chhel and Sayeed Quadri write.

The album begins with a song which is pretty much the kind that one expects from a Pritam-Emraan combo. A soft love song with a childlike feel to it, hi Kuch Dino Se has a quintessential Mohit Chauhan stamp to it as the singer gets behind the mike. Also, one can't miss the countryside melody to it as Pritam spins a tune that is easy on ears and becomes catchy after a single listening itself. While the mukhda hooks you instantly, the 'antara' is set in the 70s and brings one close to the kind of middle-of-the-road cinema which was made in that era. A song by Neelesh Mishra which should get popular in weeks to come.

The song which should appeal instantly to all those who have grown on Sonu Nigam%s songs from Deewana, Yaad and Jaan (three cult non-film albums that the singer made a few years ago) is %Tere Bin%. Easily the song of the album, 'Tere Bin' has some heart felt lyrics by Kumaar (the young man is indeed spinning some very good words film after film) that make an instant connect with those deeply in love. Yet again, the 'sur' of the album doesn%t see any deviation whatsoever with first 'hi Kuch Dino Se' and now %Tere Bin% ensuring that the melody being created here remains intact.

No wonder, this song is special enough to be repeated in a 'remix version' (one doesn't quite mind that here) as well as the 'reprise version' (by Naresh Iyer). Though there is absolutely nothing wrong with Naresh%s version here (in fact it doesn%t even sound much different either), one would still want to go back to what Sonu renders.

To bring in some variety in the album comes 'Yeh Dil Hai Nakhrewala' which is a jazz track sung by new find Shefali Alvaris. Frankly, this is one sing that one takes time to warm up to. Again, the song doesn't offend one by any means. However, in an album where one was primarily hunting for a few more love songs, a naughty track like this which is written by Neelesh Mishra and has a 50s/60s setting to it, isn't quite the kind that one was expecting to come soon after. The 'remix version' though (by Antara Mitra) is spunkier and does catch your attention.

Nevertheless, one moves on to 'Jadugari' which again ends up giving what one was expecting from a Pritam soundtrack here. A rhythmic number which again has soft undertone to it, 'Jadugari' has a soft feel to it, courtesy the manner in which Kunal Ganjawala sings it. While one is tempted to believe that this would be picturised on Emraan Hashmi, it won't be surprising if Ajay Devgn manages to bag it as well. A song with a trademark Pritam feel to it, 'Jadugari' appears effortless and this is where its win lies.

Last to come is 'shuba' which is the first and the only duet in this album made of solo tracks. Antara Mitra is in her elements once again after 'Bheegi Si' (Raajneeti) and it is just apt that she takes the lead in this love song which has some new lyrics by Sayeed Quadri. She is later joined by Kunal Ganjawala who further adds on to the youth appeal of the album. Yet again, 'shuba' is one of those songs where just one listening can confirm that it is a song composed by Pritam.

Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji is a good album which has a consistent sound to it (except for 'Yeh Dil Hai Nakhrewala' which is not bad but does deviate a little from the rest of the songs). As expected from Madhur Bhandarkar, he makes Pritam compose some classy tunes which go well with the urban romcom genre. Due to this reason, the album doesn't have any hardcore massy number that could have possibly acted as an anchor on which Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji could have entirely depended upon. This also means that the album would need a certain time period in which it can be nurtured so that it finds widespread all around acceptability. This Pritam soundtrack would find more audience for itself once the film releases and turns into a (possible) success.

Tees Maar Khan - Movie Review

Farah Khan’s comic caper has a lot riding on it. It’s Farah breaking out on her own, free from collaborations that were safe bets from within a comfort zone. In some way it’s a comeback for Akshay Kumar whose had a horrible year of releases. And it’s also Katrina Kaif strongest claim for the top Bollywood heroine slot. (if she doesn’t already own it?)

A lot of question surround this movie but you forget about all of that within minutes when Tees Maar Khan theme song kicks in.

I’ll try my best not to spoil too much of the movie as I was fortunate enough to catch an early preview in London; but honestly speaking I could only spoil some of the comedic beats,not much of the plot.

It’s a pretty straight forward masala caper and most of the set up is in the trailers.

Tees Maar Khan urf Tabrez Mirza Khan ,the biggest con artist in the world, is hired to rob a train carrying an immense treasure for a set of conjoint twin “villains”. He also is a shameless plugger of his own name. There was maybe one too many reference to the title of the movie to my taste but all that is not important for what we get is easily one of the funniest and most entertaining entertainers of the year.

It’s what Housefulll wishes it was, what Action Replayy could never accomplish and what Golmaal lies in bed at night crying it could be one day.

First, I would suggest that if you have a chance, go and watch this movie on the big screen. Partly because it’s the kind of movie that is elevated with a participating audience and partly because it needs the big canvas so you can soak up all the gorgeousness in every shot.

I have a pretty good media set up at home but in no way could I understand the awesomeness of Sheila Ki Jawaani until I saw it today.

There were many discussions the previous weeks about which was the best item number of the year: Munni Badnaam Hui from Dabangg or Sheila Ki Jawaani.I am still not sure I have an answer for that question but what I can tell you is that there were moments in Sheila ki Jawaani that Katrina Kaif took the entire audience’s breath away.

It is EPIC and if I could, I would rewind it and watch it again. You might not be able to do that in a cinema (unless you’re Raja Babu) but what you do get in the theatre experience is the full force of Vishal- Shekar‘s “saaand” blaring through the speakers and every minute detail of Katrina’ s performance elevating the song to a whole new level.

In my opinion Katrina delivers the strongest female comedic performance since Kareena Kapoor in Jab We Met. She is hilarious in every scene as Anya Khan the wannabe Starlet/Item girl and I really hope people stop asking her to prove herself over and over again. I think she has been doing that in her recent roles and this is probably one of her bests.

When reviewing our best Bollywood soundtracks of 2010 (click here) we thought that the Tees Maar Khan OST was maybe not the greatest (I am still not convinced of the Sonu Nigam’s Chipmunk voices) but it could only be fully judged when seeing it picturized. And lo and behold I was humming the songs exiting the theatre and want to get my hands on the soundtrack as soon as I can.

Although Salman Khan’s cameo in Wallah Re Wallah is featured in the promos, it still manages to send a bolt of excitement through your spine.

The first half of the movie just breezes by and the second half has a bit of a slower start but manages to put in a lot more heart in the movie.

So now on to the Khiladi. See I’ve always been fond of Akshay Kumar (especially his work ethic and just plain sincerity) but somewhere his lovable loud mouthed buffoon shtick and those indistinguishable Priyadarshan comedies just turned me away from him.

A movie that I unashamedly loved back in the day was “Mr. and Mrs. Khiladi” ,probably not the most discerning of choices, I admit but Akshay was amazing in it. That’s the kind of Akshay we get here. he is again ahead of the world, a real hero character kids would want to emulate (those fluorescent Jersey Shore Shirts can be omitted) . Someone who is witty, funny and confident. I don’t know if he ad-libs some of his lines in that throw away manner but it makes me crack up everytime and actually believe in Akshay as a leading man again.

Unfortunately for my non-hindi speakers the subtitles were not able to catch every joke thrown in but there are so many if you miss one you’ll surely catch the next one.

There are even “Inception- like” levels of joke-within-a-joke which film geeks can play filmi-bingo with. I would suggest inventing a drinking game around it, someone catches a reference and everyone drinks. Even I jumped with joy seeing Anil Kapoor’s most iconic dance and the whole Master India sequence. (Boney for reals, can we get that Mr.India sequel already??)

But you can also just enjoy the movie just as a fun masala caper with great dances and and performances from the lead as well as the supporting cast (woohoo Avtaar Gill!!) and we even get the final sequence where the whole team apears.

Akshay Khanna is hilarious as the oscar obsessed Bollywood superstar, some will claim it’s inspired by Amir or Shahrukh but I don’t see it really or at least nothing to create news stories about but I’m sure that won’ stop people.

There are certain moment that I did feel the ghost of Shahrukh Khan, who was rumoured as the main lead, loom over Tees Maar Khan. In some of Akshay’s hero poses, comedic repartés and even some of the choreography, you can can almost imagine what Shahrukh would have done with it. Even a few of the sets and décors were eerily similar to Om Shanti Om. But although fun to speculate that’s just context with no real importance to the film.

All in all I think this movie is a great move for Farah, Shrish Kunder and her production company in developing her Manmohan desai style even further. I am truly looking forward to her next paisa vasool flick but until then: go watch Tees Maar Khan on the big screen NOW!

No Problem - Movie Review

Take two petty crooks (Sanjay Dutt and Akshaye Khanna), a mean gangster and his moll (Suniel Shetty and Neetu Chandra), a bumbling cop and his schizophrenic wife (Anil Kapoor and Sushmita Sen), a bimbette on the beach (Kangana Ranaut), a bank heist and a puppet in the hands of all these people (Paresh Rawal) and shake them all together in madcap measure...End result: a bunch of clueless people hunting for a cachet of stolen diamonds and relentlessly stepping on each other's toes.

Anees Bazmee is fast donning the mantle of the comedy king in commercial Bollywood. Having delivered big laugh riots like Singh is Kinng, Welcome and No Entry, Bazmee seems to be spinning box office magic in a style reminiscent of David Dhawan's oeuvre during the 1990s. There's a similar incoherence and a method in his madness as he spins implausible yarns that have just one objective. They want to tickle your funny bone, any which way, even if means throwing reason and logic out of the window. But hey, when did the desi box office ever bother about inanities like sense and sensibility.

So go ahead and have a blast with a film that celebrates chaos and hopes to be the stress buster you have been looking for after a hectic twenty-tenner. And yes, don't forget your crispies because this one's meant to pop the corn with its crazy characters and its cornball humour. Leading the brat pack is Anil Kapoor who tries a desi Pink Panther with his foolish cop act. He may have the responsibility of nabbing all the criminals running around in sylvan South Africa, but rest assured his handcuffs -- meant for the bad guys -- are always going to hang loose on his hips and the bullets in his gun will never meet their target. Small wonder then, H@rdC0re robber Marco (Suniel Shetty) can barely stifle a yawn when the bumbling officer announces his arrival. But his foolishness elicits the best response from his wife, Sushmita Sen, who is torn between loving her husband or killing him for his stupidity. Her murderous bouts are the high point of the film, as are Paresh Rawal's attempts to set things right by setting them all wrong. Both Sanjay Dutt and Akshaye Khanna too seem to get their comic timing right as the goon buddys who are out to make a fast buck. Sadly, Kangana Ranaut's attempts to re-fashion her image from girl interrupted to giggly-headed beauty queen don't seem to have an edge.

The film does seem to be roughly edited in places and could do with some nips and tucks. Even the music (Sajid Wajid, Pritam, Anand Raj Anand) doesn't have the chartbuster flavour of the Singh is Kinng audio track. But rest assured, No Problem will make you forget your problems, provided you are willing to get goofy and give up your quest for meaning in masala.

Yamla Pagla Deewana - Music Review

One does expect the soundtrack of Yamla Pagla Deewana to be loaded with Punjabi flavoured songs from beginning till the end. Reason is obvious - the film has the entire Deol family coming together and unlike Apne, their last outing together, this one is far more 'desi' in appeal. However, one is a tad taken aback to see that instead of one single composer being entrusted with the responsibility to create an out and out masala soundtrack, there are RDB, Nouman Javaid, Anu Malik, Sandesh Shandilya and Rahul B. Seth getting a song or two apiece. Really, at this point one is not really sure about what would actually be in the offing.

Thankfully, the album takes a positive start, what with Dharmendra's smash hit chartbuster 'Yamla Pagla Deewana' making a comeback decades after it first made a country-wide impression. A rearranged version of the Laxmikant-Pyarelal song, 'Yamla Pagla Deewana' retains its overall flavour not just composition-wise but also when it comes to Anand Bakshi's lyrics. RDB does contribute a little with additional lyrics and interludes but the song doesn't loose it's originality at all. Sonu Nigam is just an apt choice to sing this one and along with Nindy Kaur, he indeed does a good job in this song. 'Yamla Pagla Deewana' arrives again in a 'House Mix' version that should find its way into the DJ's list of most preferred songs this season.

Nouman Javaid composes 'Charha De Rang' and one gets a solid impression that the makers were most confident about this track. Reason being that it appears as many as four times in the album. None of them are 'remixes' though and are just different parts of the song. A soothing track sans any Western influence whatsoever, 'Charha De Rang' retains its Indian flavour right through its four and a half minutes duration. A love song which has Ali Pervez Mehdi, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Shweta Pandit, Mahalaxmi Iyer and Rahul B.Seth coming in different parts, at places it does remind of 'Saudebaazi' [Aakrosh]. However, the similarity is just restricted to a strong Indian flavour but that's about it. Written by Rahul B.Seth and Nouman Javaid, it is a decent track where female singers actually end up bringing in far more energy than their male counterparts.

One is not too sure about what exactly do the lyrics 'Tinku Jiya' stands for. However, the fact still remains that this Anu Malik composition is what promises to be a 'masala' outing for the masses. Rest assured, if this song is choreographed on the same lines as a 'Beedi Jalaile' [Omkara] or 'Munni Badnaam' [Dabangg] then there won't be anything stopping this one from finding good audience, especially in interiors of the country. A kind of track that one would associate with a 'Bhojpuri' film, 'Tinku Jiya' (which has Anu Malik turning lyricist as well) promises to be a raunchy number with Mamta Sharma and Javed Ali going all out to keep the momentum on.

In an album like Yamla Pagla Deewana, one didn't expect a quintessential love song. However, there is 'Sau Baar' which is inspired by Pakistani-pop and actually reminds one of many a songs that have been sung by Atif Aslam. This time around it is Omar Nadeem at the helm of affairs and while his 'mukhda' is good, the 'antara' that he shares with Shreya Ghoshal turns out to be barely ordinary. Though one would have really wanted this song to be exciting enough, considering the fact that composer Sandesh Shandilya and lyricist Irshad Kamil come together all over again, the results aren't fantastic.

After 'Tinku Jiya', composer/lyricist Anu Malik and singer Mamta Sharma come together all over again for 'Chamki Jawaani'. Initial portion of the song is on the same lines as 'Kajraare' [Bunty Aur Babli]. However, what follows next is not even close as 'Chamki Jawaani' hardly manages to excite. Now this is a surprise since the male singers behind the mike are Daler Mehndi and Master Salim but still, the song turns out to be hardly foot tapping. At this point, one starts getting doubts around the rest of the album since 'Chamki Jawaani' fails to impress.

Unfortunately the album only continues to go downhill with 'Son Titariya', yet another item number with a 'desi' flavour to it, doesn't catch your attention. In fact one starts wondering at this time around that why is Yamla Pagla Deewana taking a UP/Bihar route when one would have expected a trip to Punjab. Is it the 'munni badnaam' factor, one wonders, even as composer Rahul B.Seth doesn't quite succeed in creating any magic whatsoever along with singer Krishna Beura.

Thankfully there is some Punjabi flavour (finally) in the album with 'Kadd Ke Botal' which is written by Dharmendra himself. A celebration track which is put to tune by Rahul B.Seth and has Sukhwinder Singh, Harshdeep and Rosalie Nicholson teaming up for this 'dhol' and 'bhangra' track, 'Kadd Ke Botal' is decent but again not the kind that would top the charts in 'Yamla Pagla Deewana'. The album concludes with a much expected 'Gurbani'. A minute long piece from Shri Guru Granth Sahib, it is a devotional track which is put to tune by Sanjoy Chowdhury and sung by Shahid Mallya.

Even though the album is a loaded affair with as many as seven original pieces, the few tracks that manage to make an impression are (expectedly) the title song from the past and an item number 'Tinku Jiya'. 'Charha De Rang' can be given a few listening as well but the rest don't quite manage to make an impression despite an attempt at winning over the massy audiences. Really, one expected a far better outcome from Yamla Pagla Deewana than what it eventually has to offer.

Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey - Movie Review

Adapting a work of literature into a movie is an arduous task. Satyajit Ray's 'Apu Trilogy' [PATHER PANCHALI, APARAJITO and APUR SANSAR] was based on two Bengali novels written by Bibhuthibhushan Bandopadhyay. Ray's SHATRANJ KE KHILADI was based on Munshi Premchand's short story of the same name. In fact, film-makers have always been fascinated by best-selling books/novels for adapting into feature films. Mira Nair's THE NAMESAKE, P.C. Barua, Bimal Roy and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's DEVDAS, Pradeep Sarkar's PARINEETA, Rajkumar Hirani's 3 IDIOTS, Atul Agnihotri's HELLO and the recent AISHA have been adapted from literary works. Even in Hollywood, LORD OF THE RINGS, HARRY POTTER, NARNIA and many more have been successfully adapted from novels by reputed names.

However, if you analyze the past, you will realize that not all movies adapted from novels/short stories have set the cash registers jingling at the box-office. Films like PINJAR, PAHELI, RAINCOAT and international experiments like BRIDE AND PREJUDICE and THE MISTRESS OF SPICES have found very few takers in the past.

This is not the first time Ashutosh Gowariker has adapted a book into a film. KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY is yet another book-to-movie adaptation by this talented storyteller [this one is based on the book 'Do And Die: The Chittagong Uprising 1930-34' by Manini Chatterjee]. Again, this is not the first time Ashutosh Gowariker has revisited the bygone era. He did it successfully in LAGAAN [period], then JODHAA AKBAR [historical] and now KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY [period].

Recreating the bygone era is indeed demanding, laborious and strenuous. It's a challenge to present the era convincingly. Besides extensive detailing to lend authenticity, the director carries the responsibility of making the characters come alive to the present-day generation. Gowariker has successfully done that in the past and does it successfully yet again in KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY.

Once the film-maker takes on the task of depicting a chapter from history, it's imperative that he/she remains factual to the depiction of the revolution, giving an accurate account of what actually transpired in that period. But details alone won't help, it needs to be well dramatized for the big screen. There's a vast difference in the style novels are written, but one needs to take extra care to make it film friendly. While I may not be able to comment on whether Gowariker has been faithful to the book or tampered with it or implemented some changes, which may be necessary to suit the tastes of the present-day spectators and make it more palatable, I would definitely like to say that what comes across on screen is very absorbing, truly informative and exceptionally inspiring.

Final word? The expectations from KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY are minimal, but you can't overlook the fact that it's a genuinely honest effort that needs to be encouraged and appreciated. I would like to add here that the promotional posters/billboards/promos don't create any impact whatsoever. Wish the makers would've looked into this very important aspect as well!

1930, British India: In the province of undivided Bengal lies the sleepy, peaceful port of Chittagong. In this unassuming little town, a revolution is about to begin; a revolution which will forever wake all of Chittagong and inspire the entire nation.

April 18. 1 night. 5 simultaneous attacks. A band of 64 - 56 innocent yet fearless young boys, 5 defiant revolutionaries, 2 determined young women, and an idealistic leader [Surjya Sen], a school teacher by profession.

This group of 64 represents a little-known chapter in history; a forgotten night that reigned terror on the British through a series of calculated attacks. This is a true story of these forgotten heroes and the narrative takes us through every step of the action from the initial trepidation, to the thrill of the attack, to the underground movement, daring escapes and tragic captures, and most importantly, their undying legacy.

A film-maker of extensive aptitude and sensitivity, Gowariker's tryst with period films continues. Seems like he has worked himself to the grind in order to attain perfection. The writing [screenplay: Raoul V. Randolf and Ashutosh Gowariker] and execution of the material are so credible that it influences you to wonder if the writers and director were part of the revolution. The Bengali ethos and the behavioral patterns of the characters, recreating the etiquette and body language of people who lived in a different era along with their attire and styling and also their dwellings come across as very pragmatic. In fact, Gowariker has left no stone unturned to make a film that does justice to the event.

KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY has almost entirely been shot in Goa and not Chittagong [now Bangladesh] because the location that was there in the 1930s no longer exists in that shape, I understand. However, the film captures the spirit and intensity to perfection. On the other hand, with Gowariker's films, the length/running time of the film is always a topic of discussion and that's a problem with KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY as well. The film has a running time of approx. 2.48 hours and the editor [Dilip Deo] and director could've easily trimmed a few fight sequences in the second half, to make the goings-on crisper.

Musically, KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY is embellished with soft and soothing compositions, but I have an issue with that. Sure, the album is high on patriotic sentiment, but the songs in the first hour act as a roadblock in the narrative. Ideally, it should've been a songless film. However, the background score [also by Sohail Sen] enhances every scene, making it more impactful. The production design [Nitin Chandrakant Desai] transports you to that era. It's that authentic. The stunts [Ravi Dewan] are true to life. Kiran Deohans and Seetha Sandhiri's cinematography captures the era to perfection.

Abhishek as Surjya Sen suits the character right. His character appears very fervent, but at the same time truly tranquil, incredibly unperturbed and really unruffled, which merges very well with the character of an educationalist that he illustrates. A freedom fighter with these attributes hasn't been presented in a motion picture before. Abhishek gets to the character a certain authority. The rebelliousness and boisterousness are depicted to perfection.

Deepika sheds her glam look and looks every bit the character she illustrates. Kudos to her first of all for accepting a challenging role [of a woman revolutionary of the 1930s] so early in her career and then almost living that character in the film, continuing to prove her mettle far ahead of her poise and exquisiteness.

Sikander Kher leaves a terrific impression. He excels in several scenes. Vishakha Singh is a complete natural. She catches one's attention instantly. Samrat Mukerji, Maninder and Feroz Wahid Khan, each actor is earnest and sincere to the core. In fact, every actor in the film looks most convincing in their respective parts. I would like to make a special mention of the young artists [most of them seem like first-time performers], who have a very unpolluted/uninfluenced approach to acting. Brownie points to each one of them.

On the whole, KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY, based on the Chittagong rebellion, is an enlightening experience of a poignant, but little-known chapter in history. It's a film of immense significance which evokes a colossal patriotic fervor. A motion picture like KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY isn't created targeting the box-office solely. It's also made for the gratification of the senses. And that it does in sufficient measure. In an industry obsessed by opening weekend business and box-office records, this is one of those rare films that doesn't compromise on its gracious objectives for the sake of becoming more box-office friendly. At the same time, a film like KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY, although very well made, may not appeal to those who relish the customary kitsch and masala. Therefore, the film will have to rely on a very strong word of mouth to create any kind of an impression or impact at the box-office.

Break Ke Baad - Movie Review

Aditya Chopra's DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE, Karan Johar's KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI and Farhan Akhtar's DIL CHAHTA HAI continue to inspire and motivate film-makers to this date. Danish Aslam's debut film BREAK KE BAAD borrows from the above-mentioned films, besides Imtiaz Ali's LOVE AAJ KAL and several other films churned out by Yash Raj and Dharma.

I don't think it's sacrilege to seek inspiration from a great film, a taut script or soulful music, but the storyteller ought to take that extra effort to present something more than what we've watched before, in his/her film. That's where BREAK KE BAAD fails to connect.

BREAK KE BAAD deals with space issues in a relationship, a much exploited and abused word used a lot in the present-day scenario. Space is almost like a break-up mantra and BREAK KE BAAD explores this concept rather than being a conventional love story. It has that typical Hollywood inspired urban drollness, approach and responsiveness, but what comes across on screen is a poor replication of romance-laden movies that we have enjoyed over the years.

BREAK KE BAAD goes wrong, sorry horribly wrong in its writing. The screenplay is full of glitches, the writing is juvenile, the situations are amateurish and I actually wondered how a shoddy screenplay like the one in BREAK KE BAAD was green-lit and approved in the first place. The intention was to make a cool film for the urban youth, but the writers [screenplay: Renuka Kunzru and Danish Aslam] have messed up and how!

Abhay [Imran Khan] and Aaliya [Deepika Padukone] have known each other since they were kids. Their friendship turned into love at the tender age of 15, when Abhay realized that Aaliya is the girl for him.

Aaliya's life is defined by her burning desire to become an actress and she is unmindful of what or who comes in her way. Abhay, who is still unsure about what he wants to do, finds himself competing with Aaliya's incessant plans and projects to fulfill her dreams. Things come to a head when Aaliya decides to go to Australia to study and Abhay has to deal with the prospect of a long-term relationship, secretly fearing that he will lose Aaliya forever.

They decide to give their relationship a break, so that Aaliya can pursue her dreams. As time passes by, Abhay realises his skills, while Aaliya realises that there is no joy in achieving one's dreams if one has no one to share it with.

The basic idea of BREAK KE BAAD may compel you to think that it's going to charter a new path completely, but what comes across is a sham. I mean, the lovers break up for a flimsy reason [there's no persuasive rationale actually], then become friends, then go separate ways, then become friends again, then argue animatedly and then get married. Besides, the film is talk-heavy, extremely verbose and the chatter is pointless, senseless and ludicrous.

One fails to understand why the girl drops the guy like a hot brick. Actually, there's no valid reason for her to do so. He is so committed, so devoted, so trustworthy that any girl would give her left arm to be with him. But the girl comes across as a no-brainer and expectedly, realizes her folly only towards the finale [as expected in a screenplay of convenience]. Besides a faulty screenplay, even the supporting characters [Sharmila Tagore, Shahana Goswami] are wasted.

Director Danish Aslam has handled a few moments well, that's it. A love story ought to be embellished with a lilting musical score, but Vishal-Shekhar disappoint this time. The songs are strictly okay and one misses that winning track that makes a love story memorable. Cinematography [Andre Menezes] is alright.

Both Imran and Deepika take a step forward as actors. Having watched Imran closely from JAANE TU YAA JAANE NA days, I feel that he has come a long way in his fifth outing and you can see a marked difference in his performance. As far as Deepika is concerned, I like the spontaneity that she brings to the character. After LOVE AAJ KAL, this is another film that will make people sit up and notice her talent. Sharmila Tagore is wasted. Ditto for Shahana Goswami. Yudhishtir Urs irritates. Lillete Dubey gets to deliver some spicy lines. Navin Nischol gets minimal scope.

On the whole, BREAK KE BAAD has a vibrant Imran and Deepika as its USP, but a faulty and an unpersuasive screenplay as is its major stumbling block. Fails to impress!

No Problem - Music Review

Honestly, one isn't overtly enthusiastic about checking out what exactly does No Problem have in store. It doesn't boast of a quintessential hero-heroine fare. Also, since it is an Anees Bazmee film, it isn't meant to be relying on music as it's USP as the story telling by itself is expected to bring in the audience. Moreover, the earlier promos of the film haven't quite placed music on the forefront. Add to that the fact that three set of composers - Pritam, Sajid-Wajid and Anand Raaj Anand - come together to get the album in place means one is further apprehensive about what really is in store here.

As it turns out, the opening song No Problem doesn't quite turn out to the best attraction that the title track of a film is supposed to offer. Coming from the same school of music as the title track of Welcome, this one does have a catchy rhythm to it with Wajid, Suzzane Demello, Khurram Iqbal, Bhishak Jyoti, Kamal Khan, Suganda Mishra and Altamash Faridi teaming up behind the mike. However, it somehow ends up being 'heard today, forgotten tomorrow' kind of a track. Yes, if the film ends up doing tremendously well at the box office, this song written by Shabbir Ahmed and put to tune by Sajid-Wajid can expect a decent recall value for it. However, unless that happens, this title track would have to make way for other songs in the album.

The album picks up miraculously with the arrival of 'Shakira', a fun number where the focus is on the leading ladies (Sushmita Sen, Kangna) ending up being far more enticing in their moves when compared to none other than Shakira. While Hard Kaur kick starts the song with her rap, Master Salim and Kalpana come together to get an authentic Punjabi flavour to this Pritam composition, hence making Kumaar written 'Shakira' a definite chartbuster in the making. The song, which also has a 'remix version' for itself has a distinct Pritam stamp to it and makes one wonder that why wasn't this celebration track the first to come on air.

Energy of the album continues to be on a rise with 'Babe Di Kripa' being the next to come. This one is akin to listening to two songs with Kalpana bringing on a Western rendition while new find Vikrant Singh brings on a hardcore Punjabi element. Yet another celebration track written by Kumaar, this one is not just foot tapping but also is noticeable for the way Vikran goes about singing this one. An original voice which is not quite an imitation of any other established singer, Vikrant does quite well in 'Babe Di Kripa' which should work well, especially up North with it's 'remix version' expected to find it's way into the DJ's collection.

Surprisingly, just when No Problem was reaching its peak comes a low in the form of 'We Are Innocent' which turns out to be totally wannabe. In fact after doubly checking the credit details, you are shocked to know that the man at the helm of affairs is none other than Pritam himself. His tune sounds like belonging to the world of late 80s/early 90s when such campus tracks like these were in the vogue. A forgettable track which is sung by Suraj Jagan and written by Kumaar, it tries to be all cool and fun but falls flat.

Thankfully it is the unusual suspect Anand Raj Anand who comes to the rescue with 'Mast Punjabi', third Punjabi based track in a row after 'Shakira' and 'Babe Di Kripa'. Does it work? Oh of course yes, as it turns out to be a highly addictive celebration track that gets hooked on to you in the first listening itself. In fact hearing this song (which comes again in a 'remix' version) makes you believe that Anand Raaj Anand needs inspiration to come up with a song belonging to the chartbuster variety since 'Mast Punjabi' is definitely one instance where he has delivered well. In fact he plays a triple role of a composer, lyricist as well as singer here with company from Sunishi Chauhan.

As stated earlier, there weren't many expectations from the music of No Problem. However, it ends up throwing a pleasant surprise with three of it's songs - 'Shakira', 'Mast Punjabi' and 'Babe Di Kripa' ensuring that there are enough foot tapping elements in the album. All that the makers have to do now is get aggressive on each of these three songs. Moreover, if the film turns out to be a huge success, these songs will have a greater distance to travel for sure.

Guzaarish - Movie Review

Bollywood appears to be inclined towards exploring rare illnesses/disorders/disabilities, with directors casting megastars in characters to raise awareness about the lesser-known ailments. In GHAJINI, Aamir Khan had short-term memory loss [Anterograde Amnesia]. In PAA, Amitabh Bachchan played a child afflicted with Progeria. In MY NAME IS KHAN, SRK was shown suffering from Asperger Syndrome. In TAARE ZAMEEN PAR, Aamir Khan portrayed problems of Dyslexic children. In BLACK, Amitabh Bachchan was shown succumbing to Alzheimer's. In KARTHIK CALLING KARTHIK, Farhan Akhtar portrayed a Schizophrenic.

This is not the first time that master film-maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali has attempted a movie that has the protagonist suffering from a serious disability. In GUZAARISH, Hrithik Roshan suffers from Paraplegia, a complete paralysis of the lower half of the body, including both legs, usually caused by damage/injury to the spinal cord.

Bhansali has always been known for two things. The first thing is, of course, the visual splendour in his films [which was quite evident in HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM, DEVDAS and SAAWARIYA] and the second thing that he takes inspiration from various stories. The critically acclaimed BLACK was inspired from THE MIRACLE WORKER [a 1962 film] and SAAWARIYA from 'White Nights', a Russian short story.

There's talk that GUZAARISH is a remake of Christopher Nolan's Hollywood movie THE PRESTIGE, which, let me clarify, it is not. GUZAARISH brings back memories of two films, which may be coincidental: The Spanish Oscar and Golden Globe winning film MAR ADENTRO aka THE SEA INSIDE [2004], which, in turn, was based on a real-life story of Ramon Sampedro and WHOSE LIFE IS IT ANYWAY?, a television play which was later adapted into a play [theatre] and much later into a film [1981].

Bhansali has worked himself to the grind and his presence is felt in every frame of GUZAARISH. There is an inimitable intellect that Bhansali brings to his movies. Bhansali is also known to extract the best performances from his actors. In a light-hearted vein, I would go to the extent of saying that Bhansali has the ability to make a dumb man speak and a sightless man see. His devotion and dedication towards his craft is truly inspirational and motivating. In GUZAARISH, Bhansali puts behind all the glitter and glamour and comes up with yet another unique and sensitive story told through a series of flashbacks.

Final word? GUZAARISH is special in more ways than one. In my individualistic opinion, it easily ranks amongst Bhansali's best works so far. Just don't miss this one!

Set in Goa, it tells the story of an accomplished magician Ethan Mascarenhas [Hrithik Roshan]. Ethan suffers serious injuries when one of his magical trick goes horribly wrong, turning him to a Paraplegic. Confined to a wheel chair, Ethan becomes a Radio Jockey at an FM Station called Radio Zindagi. His show talks of hope, laughter and sunshine and it's difficult to imagine that the man behind it has been immobilized with a spinal injury for the last fourteen years of his life. Sofia [Aishwarya Rai Bachchan], a nurse, takes good care of him; they share a silent love.

Ethan files a petition in court for mercy killing. This decision of Ethan leaves Sofia stunned. Ethan takes the help of friend-lawyer Devyani [Shernaz Patel] to support his appeal. Even Ethan's mother Isabel [Nafisa Ali] supports him in his petition, although Ethan is persuaded by his physician Dr. Nayak [Suhel Seth] to retract his case. Alongside all this, Omar [Aditya Roy Kapur] enters Ethan's life with the aim of learning magic from him. Impressed by Omar's love for magic, Ethan agrees to pass on his legacy to him.

Only a sensitive raconteur can do absolute justice to a challenging subject like the one in GUZAARISH and Bhansali seems the right candidate for an extremely tricky theme like mercy killing/Euthanasia. The story is complex and can only be narrated by a storyteller who has the art of telling stories most convincingly. Sure, the protagonist in GUZAARISH wants to end his existence, but that doesn't mean the film is disheartening or unsettling. Clearly, the writing [screenplay: Bhavani Iyer and Bhansali] is smart, taut and absorbing.

GUZAARISH has a number of sequences that bear the unmistakable stamp of a genius. Sample these?

The courtroom sequence and Aishwarya's outburst towards the end of it.
The hearing of the petition at Hrithik's house.
Hrithik's act going wrong and the near-fatal accident.
The finale.

Any negatives? The generous usage of English in the narrative. The language is sure to act as a barrier in the hinterland specially. Agreed, the film is set in Goa, they are bound to speak that language, but despite everything, Hindi is a must for a pan-India appeal.

Irrespective of how his films fare at the box-office, Bhansali's films have always been embellished with rich and cherished music. The songs continue to linger in the hearts of the listeners with their dulcet and soothing tunes. After legendary Satyajit Ray and Vishal Bhardwaj, Bhansali is the next accomplished film-maker who has himself created the music of his film. The songs in GUZAARISH are more inclined towards poetry that's earthy and contemporary. However, it does take some time for the listeners to sense the pulse of the music. 'Tera Zikr Hai Ya Itra Hai' is a limerick to exquisiteness, 'Sau Gram Zindagi', with its philosophical tone, leaves a lasting impression, the title track 'Guzaarish' casts a spell on you and 'Udi' is, of course, memorable.

GUZAARISH has been magnificently shot. The indoors as well as outdoors [the gorgeous panorama] add so much to the film. There's no refuting that cinematographer Sudeep K. Chatterjee has created some really alluring and enthralling visuals. The very effective and subtle background score [Tubby and Parik] of GUZAARISH is its very backbone. The feelings of intrigue, anxiety, anguish and romance come across so well. In fact, for the very first time, I felt that I was not hearing the background score, I was feeling it. Dialogue [Bhavani Iyer and Vibhu Puri] belong to high standards that touch your soul. Costumes [Sabyasachi] are absolutely wonderful; they gel well with the setting and mood of the film.

Hrithik and Aishwarya are seen in a lackluster facade and that's what makes the characters so plausible. While Hrithik is seen sporting a beard and has even put on weight, Aishwarya is seen in sober outfits. In fact, the two actors have gone through a drastic appearance change and both pressurize you to believe that they are indeed Ethan and Sofia. It must be said that Hrithik and Aishwarya exude a certain dignity and elegance, much needed for a sensitive film of this magnitude and caliber.

It must have been an arduous task for Hrithik to carry off the Paraplegic character of Ethan Mascarenhas, but he depicts the part with flourish. It's a great risk in filmy norms to have the hero of the film almost entirely on a wheel chair, but Hrithik has never hesitated or been irresolute in putting himself to adverse conditions, in order to achieve excellence, in whatever character he chooses to depict. Kudos to Hrithik for accepting a role that's truly opposite to his larger-than-life image and portraying it with elan.

Aishwarya, as Ethan's nurse who is the epicenter of his world, has approached this role with rare understanding, not going overboard even once. So effective is she that she not only influences you but also compels you to believe that their love is solid in its quiet strength and also spirited in their verbal sparring. The sensational chemistry, which sizzled the silver screen in DHOOM 2 and JODHAA AKBAR and won hearts all over, sizzles yet again, but this time in a distinctive aspect.

Aditya Roy Kapur is truly outstanding in a pivotal character. Shernaz Patel is exceptional. Nafisa Ali makes her presence felt in a small but significant role. Suhel Seth is in terrific form. Moni Kangana Dutta is okay. Vijay Crishna [judge] is effective. Rajit Kapoor does complete justice to his role. Makarand Deshpande leaves an impression. Ash Chandler and Achint Kaur lend good support.

On the whole, GUZAARISH is an invigorating tale. Bhansali, as a film-maker, has scaled several notches above his past accomplishments to create a near-perfect cinematic experience. The highpoint of the motion picture is the magnificently penned story of an incapacitated and debilitated man who desires to end his being with dignity. The film sedu.ces the viewer with a strong emotional quotient, soulful music and of course, the crackling and wonderful onscreen chemistry between Hrithik and Aishwarya. Without doubt, GUZAARISH is one of the most profound, insightful and enriching dramas of the year.

Tees Maar Khan - Music Review

Can you make a wild guess that which film was most expected this year as well in music? The Answer is “TEES MAAR KHAN” and if you ask the reason, that is - “Farah Khan-Vishal-Shekhar” Trio. Om SHANTI OM was the blockbuster of all time and the same in music. 'Dard-E-Disco', 'Ajab Si' were the masterpieces of their time. So anyone would expect awesome compositions from TEES MAAR KHAN. And anyway, the production house has already created havoc propaganda for the music of the film. They are still claiming “SHEILA KI JAWANI” the item song of the year, two greatest enemies in the song “WALLAH RE WALLAH” & they have already telecast-ed the title track and we have also loved it.

You will hear the most strange voice making the introduction of the song. Then side vocals arrive saying “Abhi Abhi Mili Khabar Ke Anusaar...”. Then the man Sonu Nigam starts to sing the most 'Crooky' song of the year “TEES MAAR KHAN”. Picturised on the full cast of the movie, the title track is impressive enough to top the charts soon. A damn confident dialog in vocal of Akshay Kumar himself adds charm to the song. Then unnecassary “Mai Baap” type of screams arrive & from then, the charm stars to lose and slowly, the song begins to change track and at last with some dhols, trumpets and “Tees Maar Khan” screams playing in the background, the song finally comes to an end. The most best part of the song was the theme music playing in the background which reminds us of some 70's or 80's movies that were based on robbery and criminals. Allover, a title track can't be better than this.

Remember Chhaliya? The heroine in mini dresses flaunting to raise your temperature. The introduction by a Harmonium already starts to groove you to the rhythm and later, drums and thumps unitedly will make you sweep you off your feat. This most-promised, various times claimed as the best item song of the season can't make you sit still in your chair. One of the most groovy item numbers of all time, “SHEILA KI JAWANI” is sure to create a sensation in no time. Superly sung by Sunidhi Chauhan, the song impresses you by the passion, maturity & temptation within it. Timely vocals(mostly Qawali) by Vishal Dadlani also create a great appeal. As a furious feminine track, this one's gonna stay and gonna stay for a long period and believe me, This Song's “Too Sexy For You”.

Rocking Qawali is nothing new today. But the sensations gonna arrive when Salman 'DABANGG' Khan, Katrina 'SHEILA' Kaif & Akshay 'Tees Maar Khan' Kumar come together to shake you heads by Qawali. If you deduct extra beat, then “WALLAH RE WALLAH” is totally a Qawali that has every sign to be a authentic one. Some artificiality has been added by the composer thinking about the listeners but they didn't need to do that. Some not-so-shiny voices like Kamal Khan, Shekhar Ravijani, Raja Hassan along with Shreya Ghoshal set the floor on fire this time unitedly. You are sure gonna see some college gores shaking their booty to this song competing with the stars on-screen. You have to come to the decision that Vishal-Shekhar delivers variety with quality.

Make way for the fourth track of the album which is entitled “BADE DILWALA” and is sung by Sukhwinder Singh along with Shreya Ghoshal. We Have heard this particular theme based song previously which is none other than “HUD HUD DABANGG”. But this one does not make such an appeal. The song does make a good effort by different & fresh lyrics by Anvita Dutt Guptan but loses tempo as it follows. Allover, this heroic number's a decent listen.

Make way for the whole team of vocalist coming from Television. Prajakta Shukre, obtained 4th place in Indian Idol Season 1(Sony); Abhijeet Sawant, Winner of Indian Idol Season 1(Sony); Harshit Saxena, Runner-up of Amul Star Voice Of India(Star Plus) & Debojit, Winner Of Zee Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005(Zee TV) – these four most-talented champs come together for the final track of the album “HAPPY ENDING”. Recently, we have listened “Apna Har Din” from Golmaal 3 which one was almost same like “Happy Ending”. A Free-spirited, happily lyricised by Anivita Dutt & sportingly composed by Vishal-Shekhar, “Happy Ending” surely makes an happy ending for this gonna-be-a-superhit music album.

TEES MAAR KHAN is the specific type of album which consists versatile type of tracks. Where you shake your booty with tracks like “SHEILA KI JAWANI”, “WALLAH RE WALLAH”, you can nod your heads with “HAPPY ENDING” and sing along the “TEES MAAR KHAN” way. With such reputation, expectations & big-budget, the music is appropriate and respectable, but one or two tracks more would have been more sufficient or we should say satisfying. Even with a bit displeased heart, every listener will move their body to the numbers. TEES MAAR KHAN is completely unemotional and fun-loving album in every means that doesn't have a single boring second to make you yawn. So, start pleasing yourselves by listening to the groovy songs of this big-budgeted, most-expected & most-promising movie that is to make arrival at the final moment of this year.

Golmaal 3 - Movie Review

Brand GOLMAAL is back again. Its equity continues to soar upwards. Naturally, every film of this franchise carries the burden of humungous expectations. Touted as India's first-ever trilogy, GOLMAAL 3 [G-3], the third installment of GOLMAAL and GOLMAAL RETURNS, promises to mesmerize, tickle your funny bone and entertain moviegoers of all ages. G-3 promises to be bigger, better, funnier and far more entertaining and amusing than the first two parts.

There's a flipside of having a thriving brand. No matter how hard you try, comparisons with the earlier parts are inevitable. The question everyone's keen to ask is, does it supersede the forerunners in terms of entertainment? The best thing about G-3 is that it lives up to its undertaking of amusing you from the word go, till the very culmination. From inception to conclusion, save for a few lax moments, G-3 is high on fun and entertainment quotient.

By now one is well versed with Rohit Shetty's funda: Come, have a blast at the movies. Frankly, there's no word called 'logic' in Shetty's cinematic dictionary and the moviegoer too has attuned himself/herself to Shetty's high-on-entertainment laughathons. I've often said that comedy is serious business and a director attempting one has to walk a tightrope. But Shetty has mastered the art by now and G-3 proves that when it comes to entertainers, he's amongst the best in the business.

G-3 rocks! It may not go down in history as the best side-splitting entertainer ever made, but it should go down in history as the first trilogy that would pass the audience test with flying colors. G-3 raises the bar for G-4, what say Mr. Shetty?

G-3 highlights the story of hatred between two bunch of siblings. Ajay Devgn [Gopal] lives with his brother Shreyas Talpade [Laxman], mother Ratna Pathak Shah [Geeta aka Guddi] and best friend Kareena Kapoor [Daboo]. Their world collides with another trio, Arshad Warsi [Madhav], Tusshar Kapoor [Lucky] and Kunal Khemu [Laxman].

Arshad, Tusshar and Kunal's father Mithun Chakraborty [Pritam] and Ajay and Shreyas' mother Ratna Pathak Shah decide to rekindle their relationship and with Kareena's persuasion even get married. But there's a problem: The kids detest each other. To complicate matters further, there's a thief Johnny Lever [Puppy] and his henchmen [Vrajesh Hirjee and Sanjay Mishra] and a necklace that's hidden somewhere.

Two things. One, before watching G-3, I had felt that focusing on eight main characters would lead to chaos only as there would be no scope for character development. But I was proven completely wrong because each character is well etched out and by the time the movie concludes, you don't feel that the show belongs to 'x', while 'y' was sidelined. The movie belongs to everyone!

Two, it's said that G-3 is inspired by Basu Chatterjee's KHATTA MEETHA [1978; starring Ashok Kumar and Pearl Padamsee], Umesh Mehra's HAMARE TUMHARE [1979; starring Sanjeev Kumar and Raakhee] and the Hollywood film YOURS, MINE AND OURS [1968], wherein an elderly couple, having their own kids, decide to live under one roof. Rohit Shetty and his team of writers [screenplay: Yunus Sajawal; script consultant: Robin Bhatt] may be inspired by these films, but they have given G-3 a completely different flavor and dimension altogether. The writing, I wish to forewarn, defies logic, sense and reason, therefore one has to go with the flow. It has a skeletal plot, but is packed with jokes, jibes, pranks and of course, stunts/action [Rohit Shetty's movies are incomplete without cars being blown to smithereens].

The casting of Johnny Lever as the absentminded and scatterbrained thief is a master stroke. The writing, execution and portrayal of this part must've been an arduous task, but what comes across on screen is remarkable. In fact, this track would work wonders with the audience, especially those who swear by the Johnny Lever brand of humour. Johnny's sequence on the water scooter, to cite an instance, is sure to bring the house down. Besides the sequences involving Johnny Lever, I'd like to single out yet another sequence that shows the siblings threatening each other. It's a sequence without words but a super background score [Sanjoy Chowdhury], with the siblings trying to threaten one another with every possible thing in the house - be it a cactus plant or a rose, be it a tomato or a pumpkin, while their parents [Mithun and Ratna] watch HUM SAATH-SAATH HAIN on TV. Also, Kareena's pet dog called Facebook trying to get the bone out of Mithun's pocket is bizarre, but will be loved by the hoi polloi. Prepare to laugh your guts out in the above-mentioned scenes.

Any hiccups? The climax could have been a little more imaginative. It follows the trademark Priyadarshan style of getting together the entire cast, including supporting actors to villain sidekicks, for the finale. No issues with that, but a more innovative and ingenious finale would have only proven the icing on the cake.

Relying more on treatment than content, G-3 has the by-now-famous stamp of Rohit Shetty all over it. The director gets ample help from writer Yunus Sajawal and dialogue writers Farhad-Sajid and Bunty Rathore [additional dialogues]. The screenplay doesn't give you time to think, while the dialogues are truly funny at most times. As the third installment in the GOLMAAL series, G-3 has a lot to live up to and so does the soundtrack [Pritam]. 'Golmaal' is fun, while 'Ale' moves at a feverish pace. Cinematography [Dudley] is perfect, while the action scenes [Jai Singh Nijjar] are exciting.

Like I pointed out earlier, every actor in the film contributes his/her bit in making this fun ride enjoyable. Yet, I'd like to single out Ajay, who goes for a grungy makeover. The rugged style, diamond ear studs, tattoos and cropped hair suits the hyper character that he portrays. He's excellent. Another well-written character is of Kareena, who fits in so well with the boys. She looks every bit the tomboy she is expected to be. She's matchless. Tusshar gives a brand new dimension to the character he has learnt so well to portray. He is sure to have the audience in splits with his class act. I'd also like to single out the emotional sequence, which Tusshar performs with gusto. Arshad oozes sufficient confidence to carry off the role, while Shreyas and Kunal are wonderful as well.

Mithun Chakraborty and Ratna Pathak Shah are genuinely lovable, while Johnny Lever is simply fantastic. Ditto for his henchmen, enacted by Vrajesh Hirjee and Sanjay Mishra. Mukesh Tiwari, Murli Sharma, Vijay Patkar, Viju Khote and Ashwini Kalsekar lend very good support. Prem Chopra is superb in a cameo.

On the whole, GOLMAAL 3 is an ideal fun ride with thrice the enjoyment and gratification, thrice the magic and thrice the hilarity. Go on, have a blast and make this Diwali thrice more entertaining for you. An out-and-out entertainer, it's sure to light up the celebratory festive mood.

Action Replayy - Movie Review

'Action Replayy' is one film which is arriving as an underdog this Diwali. The film doesn't scream and excites audience by proclaiming - 'Hey, look I am cool' or 'See, Akshay Kumar would be seen as a Mr. Smart Know All' once again' or 'The gags are such that you would fall off your seats'. Instead it does it all in a subtle manner when it comes to treatment though the look of the film does gain audience attention, courtesy the 70s setting that had a psychedelic flavour to it.

No wonder, when the curtains go up, the film begins and a few minutes later, Akshay is introduced as a nerd from the 70s, everyone collectively goes 'eeks' along with his son (Aditya Roy Kapoor) who has made a visit to the past. Forget the flamboyance or the energy that one expects from Akshay Kumar, he actually gets into a garb as never worn before. Donning an ill fitting 'kurta-pyajama', a pair of TV screen style glasses, a 'champu' haircut, an awkward walk and last but the most visible aspect of his personality - two protruding teeth, Akshay is as unlike a hero as one can expect from him or any other supporting actor filling a frame.

Vipul Shah gets the retro flavour bang on right from the time opening credits start rolling. The anthem music, background score, colours, costumes, sets, props - everything blends in truly well to actually traverse audience to the era gone by.

This is not all as the characters too turn into the kind that one expects from the 70s. Aishwarya Rai as a talkative mini skirted young tomboyish girl could well have taken a cue from Neetu Singh, Rannvijay Singh as a harmless villain is a diluted version of Ranjeet & Prem Chopra while Rajpal Yadav is a mini version of the boisterous Rajendra Nath. However, Akshay does something that has never been done by an actor either from the 70s or the current times and this is where the win of the character lies.

So while Aditya tries to develop love between next door neighbours Akshay and Aishwarya, everything that is possibly goes wrong between the duo. A street-smart Ash makes life miserable for Akshay and though he has a soft corner for her, he manages to let go off his feelings when he sees her get out of a mini skirt and don a saree. His heart goes 'dhak dhak' and he is all set to propose to her, but not before he goes through some real transformation. It is time for some 'awaaz neeche' and the game of one-upmanship as he is the one to take the upper seat now with Ash eventually falling in love with her.

A storyline as simple as that has to be sustained by peppering the screen with some interesting ingredients. This is something that is made possible through some fantastic tunes that have been put in place by Pritam. 'Zor Ka Jhatka', 'Chann Ke Mohalla' and 'Ae Bekhabar' arrive one after another and are a treat for the audience. There is a medley of four songs (set in a dance competition) in the second half of the film which is immediately followed by a love song (Tera Mera Pyaar); something that will have mixed reactions from audience as there are too many songs that come in one go.

This is immediately followed by a chase sequence, hence leading to a climax which seems to be set in a Priyadarshan/Anees Bazmee mode. For those who had liked the subtle yet engaging narrative of the film so far, this part of the film has a different flavour to it, something that may entice different reactions from different segments (mass v/s class) of the audience.

Coming back to the film in totality, to its credit there is no dull moment. While some of the fun sequences (Akshay proposing to Ash for the first time in a garden, the series of 'awaaz neeche' episodes, the one where Ash brings a cake for Akshay) do bring on the laughs, there are a few lump in the throat moments as well (Akshay touching Aditya's feet, his sob story on the reason behind his personality). What makes 'Action Replayy' further endearing is the chemistry between Akshay and Ash, something which is unconventional and yet makes one wonder that why the two had never been paired together.

Amongst other actors, Aditya turns out to be a surprise package as he does justice to his lengthy role in the film. He has a pleasant screen presence, is confident and quite natural. Om Puri and Kirron Kher are as usual, Rajpal Yadav is controlled, Rannvijay Singh decent while Randhir Kapoor and Sudeepa Singh are hardly there. Neha Dhupia has a miniscule screen time in a friendly appearance though she makes her presence felt in 'Zor Ka Jhatka'.

Overall, 'Action Replayy' turns out to be a clean musical entertainer that has a young feel to it without turning loud and brings with it an appeal that would cater to audience across all age groups. If in look out for some clean entertainment this Diwali, step into 'Action Replayy'; you would enjoy some harmless fun that would follow in those two hours.
