Haunted Hills Estate

Early 1900’s, in the hard working days, Haunted Hills Estate was owned by the Hill Family. The Estate was located over 100 acres of the most beautiful land in Pennsylvania. The Estate was known for its many beautiful scenic-walking trails. The Estate was full of life as so was the owners Edgar and Eleanor Hill and their thirteen children. Eleanor, a beautiful social organizer and Edgar, a very quiet hard working farmer held an Autumn Festival every year for all to see the enchanting walking trails. People would travel for days just to visit the beautiful Estate. One dark autumn night during a Festival Eleanor Hill was found by her husband hanging in the barn. This ended the happy times at the Estate. Edgar Hill became a broken man and became quite insane. He blamed all the visitors for Eleanor’s death and planned revenge. The following year Edgar held an Autumn Festival in honor of his wife. He brutally murdered as many visitors as he could. Bodies were found in the barn, woods, and open meadows. Edgar was never seen again after that long Autumn Night of Darkness. To this day the hanging of Eleanor Hill remains a mystery and Edgar Hill still remains missing. It has been widely rumored that the spirit of Eleanor and her murdered visitors wander the Estate looking for an answer. Legend has it that Edgar Hill still walks the trails so that he can resume his terrible vengeance upon any soul who enters his Estate. The farm was let go for no crop would grow from all the blood shed. The ground soaked up the blood and the scent of the ground has attracted wild bloodthirsty animals. The Estate was left to the Hill children. The Hill family passed it on to each other until there was none living. HHE is believed to be haunted by the Hill family and those murdered victims.

In 1998 a Doctor Vincent Hill bought the Estate to perform experimental studies for tissue regeneration. The government funded this experiment and the location was determined due to the privacy of the old farm. This experiment was almost completed. This would have been a huge medical breakthrough but one Autumn Night the Doctor was found hanging in the Barn.

Many believe that the old Estate remains Haunted and the Dark Past will only continue. Since this tragedy occurred, many are not brave enough to enter the Estate.

A haunt team stumbled upon the Legend and opened the gates to the Estate. The haunt team consisted of 10 people, presently there is only one left. Five members of the team reported that this estate is too dangerous to stay, two are missing and the other two were found brutally murdered from a wild animal. The one remaining haunt entrepreneur is known as spookygirl. The rumor is she has opened more than the gate to HHE. She has found the passageway to the horror that left so many pulseless.

Spookygirl welcomes you to the Estate. The walking Challenge trail is chilling and most entertaining and the Moonlight hayride is howling. The Grave Mistake is a unique experience for those who like to go alone. This year is the first that visitors will be aloud (if your brave enough) to enter The Legend and venture to the other side…

On April 13th 1862, Fred McCune moved his family from New York City to the quiet mountains of Pennsylvania. They built a gorgeous home on multiple acres of land and life seemed normal.

What Freddy didn’t know, at the time, was that the land that he had purchased was a burial ground once occupied by the Aliquippa Indians.

On or about May 12th 1863 Lawrence McCune, the brother of Freddy, discovered a cave opening that had been covered by brush and grown over with weeds.
A rich stench oozed through the air and a cold desolate feeling came over him. He reported the finding to Freddy immediately.

The morning of May 16th 1863, Freddy, his brother, nephew and two young sons ventured into the cave to investigate the smell. They never came out.

In the aftermath of the Great Depression, drifters and gypsies, vagrants and desolates alike took up occupancy in the Lake House Hotel, never to be seen again. Over the years, the townspeople of Saylorsburg became increasingly worried over the mystery surrounding the Lake House. They watched and waited from afar, becoming more and more suspicious and frightened in regard to the type of activities which may have been taking place within the walls of the sinister building. Mysteriously, one by one, some of the local children went missing. Well, enough was enough! The people of Saylorsburg demanded that the sheriff conduct an investigation. One late October night, armed and ready, the sheriff and his men slowly approached the cold and forbidding door of the Lake House Hotel. It was freezing cold and as black as a crow’s eye on that wretched night. Upon breaking down the menacing barricade, the pungent smell of death stinging their noses, the sheriff and his men warily entered, never again to see another day. The stench of rotting flesh was in the air as the frightened townspeople gathered outside the building. They anxiously watched and wondered what had taken place as the ear piercing screams of terror which were heard throughout Saylorsburg and neighboring towns gradually subsided. The piles of limestone did nothing to mask the horrible odor emanating from the old building. Not one person would come out of the Lake House alive and the thick black smoke rose well into the night sky. So much smoke came bursting out that the sun did not shine through the smoldering cloud of death hovering over Saylorsburg for 30 days.

The townspeople of Saylorsburg have kept quiet about the incidents at the Lake House and have tried to forget the past events. Some say they can still see some black smoke rise above the clouds on a cold October night. Others have tried to ignore the lake house altogether. But whatever goes on inside those walls has yet to be discovered. Until Now…

Are you prepared to burst through the doors of the new hotel of horror and discover what lies beneath those blood-soaked walls? Are you brave enough to enter into the world of the unknown and the macabre? Are you capable of escaping the hands of doom? Then prepare yourself to meet the end, at the hands of the damned and the cursed in the NEW HOTEL OF HORROR!

Ricky Barnes’ teeth chattered as he ran out of the fog of the haunted house. “It’s really scary,” said Barnes, 10, dressed in a skeleton costume.

“People are jumping out at you.”

He was one of about 300 costumed visitors Tuesday night to the haunted house and ghoulish characters at the Donald Wilkins residence, 2020 Manchester Road.

More than 800 have visited since it opened Friday.

“We have them coming from Linesville, North East, Springfield and Meadville,” he said.

For Wilkins, the haunted house and other elaborate decorations in his yard began six years ago as a way to attract more Halloweeners.

Now he has almost $30,000 invested in the decorations and equipment. He gives out $500 to $600 a year in candy and other treats.

But it’s more than ghosts and goblins for Wilkins.

While everything is free, trick-or-treaters can donate to the Benedictine Sisters’ Emmaus Soup Kitchen.

Wilkins said he has raised about $2,400 over the past couple of years.

“I thought if I’m going to go to all the effort to set this up, we may as well see if we can do some donations to help them out, too,” he said.

Wilkins, an employee of Steris Corp., said the employees there have always donated to the soup kitchen, and he thought the soup kitchen be a good place for his donations, too.

“It’s a month before Thanksgiving, which is a perfect time to give them a donation,” he said.

Wilkins said the idea for the haunted house began when he moved back into his family homestead in the mid-1990s.

He initially found only a few trick-or-treaters came to the house. He started giving out $1 treats and started drawing about 40 kids. He then built a coffin with candy in it. When trick-or-treaters would open the coffin, he would push a button and a rat would come up.

“It just sort of mushroomed from there,” he said.

The “haunted house” is his garage. Originally, he outfitted one bay with exhibits, then two bays, and now he has all four bays with six different exhibits. There are mummies, a fortune teller, a torture chamber and witches — and neighborhood kids volunteer to take part in some of the scenes. The haunted house empties into a tent with treats. Not just candy bars, but packages of candy bars, and other items as well.

His backyard has a “Bone Yard” with tombstones and a “mausoleum” with a creature coming out when the doors open. The sounds of thunder and lighting drift about. On the ground near the driveway are lighted skeletons, bones and witches. In the front yard are lighted inflatable goblins.

Wilkins said it takes two months to get everything ready for Halloween. The rest of the year he’s looking through catalogues and on the Internet for something to add to the decorations.

“It’s is amazing what is out there,” he said. “I’m amazed that people think it up, and I’m amazed that there are people like me that are crazy enough to buy it.”

Next year, he said, he may be moving to a larger place, but he doesn’t have a location yet.

He’s already put in his order for next year at a store that is having a 50 percent off sale on its Halloween offerings.

“It’s like a fungus,” he said, laughing. “It gets out of control.”

But it’s all for a good cause.
