While cleaning up, I saw this passage again after such a long time. I remember that when I was in college I used to carry a piece of paper with this quote or passage, it was actually from my father and it meant a lot to me. I used to tell myself to smell the roses and I did, I used to care and I was happy most when I was helping out others. I used to think that I will always be like that, I will treasure every moment with my family, cherish the job I had that allow me to help empower my "kababayan"....but it was not to be.

Our life right now is so fast-paced that even eating is considered to be so much time-consuming...hence, the fast food where you can just order food, eat and leave as soon as you're done without any worries about the dishes, somebody's going to do it for you. We work very hard to get to the goal we want for our family and your young children...only to realize that they are now over 20 and they don't know you. You missed the small moments when they were young that will forever be gone because you can never take back the time. So, let me ask you, who were you working so hard for?

Everything is a rush, rush, rush...you want to finish school and leave your house to work and be independent. You were working hard and playing hard that you never had the time to visit your parents or even call them just to say Hi. And now you're here....and they're gone. When was the last time you said Thank you or I love you or I'm sorry for that matter?

There are so many memories to be made...and few of them will make an indelible impression on our brains...because we didn't savor each moment, not when it was there. Only when it's too late...then you wish for it.

Whether you are a daughter or son, a mother or father, a sister or brother, a lover.....live fully. Appreciate what you have right now....kiss your son or daughter while they are young because time will come when they wont let you, go to their Little League where they can show off to you, hug them every time, any time...show them that they are truly loved - this will make them grow-up positive and with self-esteem. Let them be kids with muddy hands and feet, let them explore...they are kids just but once, let them be teen-agers, you know how it felt because you were once a teen-ager. Give them the chance to do the things they really want to do, grow up the way they want to and simply give them chance to soar in their own time and in the way they know how. If you have guided them pretty well, they can never go wrong.

Don't take your wife, husband or lover for granted. Enjoy the silly and stupid moments or ignore it especially if it does not make a huge splash on your relationship. Hug them, love them, kiss them like there is no tomorrow, like it's the last time you are going to because it might just be...you never know where life takes you.

Smell the roses or the daisies...appreciate life..live it to the fullest...help others when you can because you never know when that help has a ripple effect...you don't choose who to help, you just do.

Like I said, I held this passage dear to me....but I forgot what it meant and I let some things pass me by, I enjoyed my life but still there were things I wish I could have done better...I regret some things. And then my son came...I did not want to lose those few moments which I can never recover...and looking back at his pictures...I am glad, doubly glad, I was there for him. In time he will grow...and leave me for college and for work and for his new family but I have the memories I made with him to hold on to. I know that when the time comes I will be strong enough to let him go and soar wherever, whenever, however he wants to, God willing.

After more than a hundred calls via my cellphone, I was able to contribute to Kris Allen's victory in the Season 8 American Idol. I kept myself updated with the voting process and that is why I was able to copy the instructions from Kris Allenation blog. And much to my surprise and of course delight, I found out that I could vote using my cellphone. And thus while Gizmo was down, I use my cell to call the toll-free number given for Kris Allen...(btw, these numbers are still stored in my phonebook). When it was getting hot, my 11 year old son took over for me and I went to my PC to try Gizmo again. My niece then decided to try and use her fone to also call the numbers for Kris....and she was able to put in 87 votes...she would shout every time she got a call thru. And so the next day, we were all crossing our very sore fingers that Kris Allen would win....and he did.

For the 2nd year in a row...I won, lol.

When I first saw the results night on the final 2, all I could remember was that Kris Allen was in the final 2. When I saw the replay, it was just then that I realized that he was really the first one to be safe. Everything is being done to make sure that Kris Allen wins the game....I really hope he wins....regardless, we all know how good he is and I definitely will buy his album.

My friends were talking about a mutual friend, about her being in God’s grace as she has 2 sons who are priests. I told them it was the dream of my aunt to have any of her 3 nephews to become priests, unfortunately, nobody did. She told me she still prays for one especially as she has more grandsons than daughters. And so my friends began convincing me to send my son to study in the seminary. They would like to sponsor my one and only son to become a priest. I guess any mom would be so lucky to have one. And so I told them that I would ask him if he is interested. I mean, I cannot decide for him….I can only pray it is what he wants, too.

With the recent global crisis, the fresh graduates now face the biggest problem ever. Big companies are closing or relieving employees, even government agencies are experiencing lay-offs clearly showing that those who have jobs right now are not in a safe or stable position. They can be greatly affected by sudden changes or loss in profit whether by a local company or a multinational one. Even OFWs or overseas contract workers are coming home with empty pockets except what they have saved over years of working in another country.

In this case, you wonder where the fresh graduates will apply jobs. With no jobs available locally, where do they go? They will then try to look for jobs abroad but then looking for a job and getting one are two different things. Jobs may be available but getting it would be a long process which would also need for you to invest money on. Then that’s where the Catch-22 starts, you need money to get the job which can give you the money you need. Unfortunately, the money you need to spend on looking for the job is an additional expense which can be hard on your pocket or a make a dent on your savings.

Am back...after a long vacation

I took a long vacation from blogging, there was just so much to do at home and my only interaction with the computer was checking the mails, there were times I could not even reply….my apologies to all those who sent emails, forwarded and otherwise.

In addition to all the housework, Christmas shopping and cooking, I also had to help out my son with the multitude of projects and homework and exams he had to endure….if only you could see him and his efforts. It was then that I realized how important some information is for children. I was very thankful that some blogs took the time to put necessary information that makes the children’s job easier. One such blog is mukamo Philippines where my son was able to get the list of the cabinet members under the arroyo government. Since then I promised myself that every now and then I will also put educational information that can help these kids with their projects.

For all my guests, I will appreciate it if you could leave me links to new and updated information that our children are often using, questions they are always asking so I can research and post the answers.

Working with all the noise around me is kinda hard but I guess boys will be boys, no matter the age. With the video games on, why do they still need to talk it out with each other, like they are making the annotating their moves when they are in fact fighting each other? I wonder, do they outgrow this?

Argghhhhh, gotta stop and take a rest or my articles might all show my irritation, so help me I might smash the computer in two.

It's been almost a month since I have posted anything....I had to give blogging a respite...not because I wanted to but because I needed to. In my earlier post, I have shared that my son had an asthma attack again...and because like all mothers I needed to be sure, I took him to a PEDIA PULMONOLOGIST and now we are having a month-long symptoms monitoring because she is wondering why the attacks are getting more frequent.

He feels better, hasn't had any of the symptoms.....since I started the chart last Friday. This will give us the chance to really determine what triggers his asthma attack.

I will be updating my blog from here on.....and I guess my friends are welcoming me back.

I have been gone from blogging for almost 2 weeks….my son had an asthma attack and that left me little time to go online. Although asthma runs in the family, I have been told that once a child has reached the age of 7 and has not had an attack since then, then your scot-free….no more asthma for the rest of your life or until something triggers it again when one is older. My son is now 10 years old and unfortunately, this is his 2nd attack for this year. For the past 2 years, he hasn’t had one and I was getting complacent and definitely hopeful that it was forever gone. Worst luck for my son, it isn’t yet. I am certainly hoping that being active in sports and swimming will help. On my part being prepared is crucial and a must. Now, I realized that I have a need to get acquainted with it again after believing that there really was no need.

Here are some things I got on my recent research…I copied the exact text and have some comments on the side. To all parents who have or at one time had kids with asthma, feel free to add your comments, tips and advices.

What's bronchial asthma?

Bronchial asthma is a disease caused by increased responsiveness of the tracheobronchial tree to various stimuli. The result is paroxysmal constriction of the bronchial airways. Bronchial asthma is the more correct name for the common form of asthma. The term 'bronchial' is used to differentiate it from 'cardiac' asthma, which is a separate condition that is caused by heart failure. Although the two types of asthma have similar symptoms, including wheezing (a whistling sound in the chest) and shortness of breath, they have quite different causes.

Bronchial asthma is usually intrinsic (no cause can be demonstrated), but is occasionally caused by a specific allergy (such as allergy to mold, dander, dust). Although most individuals with asthma will have some positive allergy tests, the allergy is not necessarily the cause of the asthma symptoms. (And here I was thinking that all I have to do is know what his allergies are to be ready.)

Symptoms can occur spontaneously or can be triggered by respiratory infections, exercise, cold air, tobacco smoke or other pollutants, stress or anxiety, or by food allergies or drug allergies. The muscles of the bronchial tree become tight and the lining of the air passages become swollen, reducing airflow and producing the wheezing sound. Mucus production is increased. (If you’re kid is having an attack, there will be constant coughing which can make you feel helpless or wish you could just grab that cough out of your child.)

Asthma can develop at any age, but some children seem to outgrow the illness. (Like they said, if your child reaches the age of 7 and do not have any asthma attack afterwards then you can relax.)Risk factors include self or family history of eczema, allergies or family history of asthma. Typically, the individual usually breathes relatively normally, and will have periodic attacks of wheezing. Asthma attacks can last minutes to days, and can become dangerous if the airflow becomes severely restricted. Asthma affects 1 in 20 of the overall population, but the incidence is 1 in 10 in children. Asthma can develop at any age, but some children seem to outgrow the illness. Risk factors include self or family history of eczema, allergies or family history of asthma.

Bronchial asthma causes cough, shortness of breath, and wheezing. Bronchial asthma is an allergic condition, in which the airways (bronchi) are hyper-reactive and constrict abnormally when exposed to allergens, cold or exercise. (And when they cough, they really cough hard and long.)

Treatment is aimed at avoiding known allergens and controlling symptoms through medication. A variety of medications for treatment of asthma are available. People with mild asthma (infrequent attacks) may use inhalers on an as-needed basis. Persons with significant asthma (symptoms occur at least every week) should be treated with anti-inflammatory medications, preferably inhaled corticosteroids, and then with bronchodilators such as inhaled Alupent or Vanceril. Acute severe asthma may require hospitalization, oxygen, and intravenous medications.

Decrease or control exposure to known allergens by staying away from cigarette smoke, removing animals from bedrooms or entire houses, and avoiding foods that cause symptoms. Allergy desensitization is rarely successful in reducing symptoms.

You might also check if your child is allergic to the sea breeze because when my son was younger I used to bring him to the beach as I was told it relieves those with asthma but realized he got worse. I was told by his pediatrician that although it is a popular belief it does not necessarily mean that sea breeze will relieve colds for everyone. It can even worsen some, like what happened to my son. According to his pedia, swimming in the pool would be better as it can make sure his lungs grow stronger. Also, too much strenuous activity might not be good especially when he has a cold. But I do believe that it is a way to desensitize if you help your child become more active if he is not suffering from colds, its like you up the level of him being able to do strenuous activities.
