We believe that no matter the stage of one’s career, you are always growing and learning, so in a way, all musicians are students of music. As a new record label we are very driven to stake our claim in this business. The only way for us to do this is to help you, the musicians of the world, further your success. If you ask Producer/Beat Maker Guy Effortless Lee to describe the six man team, he’ll give you an explanation similar to this: “We are all students of our culture, doing nothing more than giving back to the heritage that raised us. You must pay your dues in this game in-order-to establish yourself as an artist/group. So, we strive everyday to be the best that we can at what we do, call us perfectionists if you must; but that’s not to say that we’re not having fun or are hammered drunk while we’re doing it. We respect the art to the fullest, and it’s our time to leave a footprint.”

Along with Effortless, the Crew consists of: DJ Morplay, emcees Burly Minor, Inf. and Malevolent Smith as well as their solo rippin’ guitarist Shoe. With their debut EP “Dehydrated” already catching buzz around the Twin Cities after a successful release party at the Varsity Theatre, the guys are hyped to book more shows, events, house parties, battles, festivals, etc. to get you and your grandmother f***ing LOOSE!

Prophis is the second artist to work with Student Run Records. Prophis by definition represents a new breed of artist. Deriving his name from the television series “Stargate,” it seems only fitting as his music is a futuristic hybrid of techno, break beats, and old school M.C.’ing.

Born Antonio Colangelo, Prophis grew up in suburban Vermont. Bored with his surroundings Prophis found excitement in the sounds of mid 90’s hip-hop. It was through this art form that a shy boy from Vermont found his voice. As he started to experiment with sounds, Prophis slowly found a style of his own. Using a simple yet sophisticated recording studio that he set up in his bedroom, Prophis started to lay down track after track, slowly becoming more professional. With the help of the Internet, he went on to collaborate with guest artists on his debut EP, “Harmony in Chaos,” without the artists even in the same room.

Constantly finding himself inspired by the Minneapolis underground, Prophis found himself moving to the Twin Cities to pursue what he calls “music at its purest.” Armed with only a laptop and a drive to succeed, Prophis started creating his own mesh of hip-hop and electronica, while challenging what we know of modern music today.

In short, Prophis has become the soundtrack to the digital revolution. In a day and age when the entire music industry has become consumed under a digital umbrella, he is an artist that uses new ways to create uniqueness that cannot be corralled into a single category. Quite simply, it is music to move you and inspire a new generation of music makers to create their own destiny.
