BREAKING NEWS

Stillwater senior goaltender Blake Cates took a skate across the neck and upper chest on Saturday night against Park (Cottage Grove). He was taken to the hospital emergency room. He was given six or seven stitches just below the soft part (wind pipe) of his neck. A long scratch from the skate can be seen across the left side of his neck and down to where the stitches are. It was a scary situation but it sounds like Blake is fine and he will be ready to stop pucks again very soon.

Trevor Olson
I was informed that Duluth East's Trevor Olson is in fact playing for Duluth East this season. He apparently has a strained MCL and will be back in a few weeks.

Statistical Leaders
I will be compiling statistical leaders on a weekly basis for the various categories as I have the last couple of years but I will not start posting them until next week (Sunday, December 11th) as many teams will have played only one game through this week. - The Warriors will bring back 36 more goals from last season than Moorhead.

- After McLain, Pohlkamp, and Rich, the scoring depth plummets. The top three scored 77 regular season goals in 2010-2011. The remaining players returning this season only scored 9 total last season.

- The defense has seniors Gaven Motschenbacher and Austen Anderson returning.

- Stearns was good last season with 15 wins, a 3.26 GAA, and a .876 save percentage.

- The Warriors scored 5.44 goals per game during the regular season, best by far in the Section. But, they gave up 3.25 goals per game, more than a goal more than Bemidji and Moorhead, the top teams in the Section. Brainerd/Pillager/Pierz will to better on defense and in goal.

3. Bemidji

- The Lumberjacks, who won 21 regular season games, scored 115 goals last season. The players that scored 60 of those goals have graduated. They return 48% of their goal production.

- The defense will be decent again with four defenders returning, senior Tyler Tatro, senior Brady Devescovi, Dillon Eichstadt, and Kole Spencer. Bemidji only gave up 1.68 goals on average in the regular season, best in the Section.

- Goaltender Miah Graves graduated. He was a big contributor to the Lumberjacks success last season. Senior Ben Schram is the likely successor. He won four games last season with 1.50 GAA and a .906 save percentage.

- Bemidji will still be a very good team. It will be interesting to see if they can match last year's numbers, success.

4. Roseau

- The Rams best returning goal scorer, junior Chase Broten, netted only seven goals last season.

- With Josh Erickson having left early for the USHL, Roseau returns just 31 of 91 goals from last season.

- Senior Jared Strand will be called upon to lead the goaltending efforts again. He had 11 wins, a 2.27 GAA, and a .879 save percentage.

- Defensively last season, the team gave up 3.20 goals per game, unusually high for Roseau. They return just two defenders that had full-season experience last year.

- The team is made up mostly of juniors. Two incoming sophomores, Alex Strand and Zach Yon, could have an impact on the team right away and could help guide the Rams back up to the top.

5. Northern Lakes

- After two years in Section 6A, the Lightning are back to the Class AA level.

- This team returns six juniors and two seniors.

- Junior Connor Chambers could see a 30-goal season.

- There is not a lot of depth to this team yet if Chambers and goaltender Joey Bergquist can find a little support, they will be good enough to sustain a fifth-place spot in the Section.

6. Buffalo

- The Moose best player, Gage Torrel, left a year early to play for Alexandria of the NAHL. That means that the Moose will only return 37 goals, 45% of last year's goal production.

9. River Lakes

- The Stars need to improve at all levels after winning just three games last season.

- The Prowlers do not return any players that scored goals in double-figures last season but, they return eight that had scored at least three.

- Their starting goaltender, Josh Koop, graduated. But, they return two goaltenders, senior Jon Naverud and sophomore Tanner Holmes, that combined for seven wins and a decent save percentage.

- The will need to rebuild their defense as lone senior Andrew Lansing returns.

- I am giving Section 8A defending champion Thief River Falls a slight edge over Warroad and East Grand Forks due to their returning depth.

2. Warroad

G Andy Foster (12) - 16 wins, 2.01 GAA, .916 save percentage
F Austin Streiff (12) - 18 pts (11g, 7a)
D Hayden Timm (12) - 17 pts (5g, 12a)
- The Warriors have the third least returning goals in the Section from last season, 35 goals.

- Like Thief River Falls, Warroad needs to rebuild their defense. Hayden Timm and junior Zach Johnston are the only experienced d-men this season.

- Andy Foster will be the best returning goaltender in the Section.

- I lamented about putting Warroad in the second spot because East Grand Forks will be very good this year. Foster is the difference.

3. East Grand Forks

F Cory Mack (12) - 28 pts (11g, 17a)
F Zack Lawdermilt (12) - 26 pts (10g, 16a)
F Tommy Hajicek (11) - 26 pts (15g, 11a)
- The Green Wave lost a tough one in the Section 8AA semifinals last season. They lost 3-2 in double-overtime to Warroad.

- East Grand Forks returns four players that scored double-figures in goals last season. The fourth to do so was senior defenseman Tyler Hajicek.

- Skilled junior defenseman Gage Ausmus left way early for the USNTDP. It could be a big loss for the Green Wave.

- Hunter Aubol is back in goal and he had a decent season in '10-'11 with seven wins, a 3.24 GAA, and a .877 save percentage. He shutout Warroad in one game last season.

- I know it may be a stretch but I think Gage Ausmus is the difference between East Grand Forks being ranked 1st or 3rd in this Section to start the season. They still have a great shot at winning the Section but there is a bigger hole on defense this season with Ausmus gone. Only one returning defenseman, Tyler Hajicek, played in all 24 regular season games for the Green Wave. Thief River Falls and Warroad are rebuilding their defenses this season but when you think of those two teams, you think of their strong, aggressive, relentless defenses that wear down their opponents. I'm confident those two teams will rebuild and have that reputation again this season. It will remain to be seen if East Grand Forks can compare well on defense with the top two this season. If they can, they will win the Section.

4. Park Rapids Area

F Sam Coborn (12) - 64 pts (35g, 29a)
F Ian Johnson (11) - 44 pts (17g, 27a)
F Levi Erickson (12) - 29 pts (14g, 15a)
- The Panthers will bring back most of their goal production this season, 84%, 86 of 102 goals. Coborn-Johnson-Erickson will be tough to slow down.

- Park Rapids has deep experience on defense. Two of those defensemen were freshmen. The defense improved overall last season. It still needs to be much better in order to compete with the top teams in Section 8A.

- The goaltending will be okay as they are returning the duo of senior Scott Smith (.879 save %) and sophomore Cody Brumbaugh (.894 save %). They faced a lot of shots.

- The defense will be the key to keep the Panthers a top five team in Section 8A.

5. Crookston
F Ryan Edevold (11) - 24 pts (15g, 9a)
G Kollin Erdman (12) - 7 wins, 2.55 GAA, .910 save percentage
F Dylan Klatt (11) - 13 pts (4g, 9a)
- The Pirates only return 42% of their goal production and two defensemen.

- Crookston returns just three seniors.

- Senior Kollin Erdman is returning in goal. He had seven wins, a 2.55 GAA, and a .910 save percentage last season.

- The Pirates are not deep but they should still be a top-five Section 8A team this season.

6. Red Lake Falls

- Goaltender Jo Jo Jeanetta graduated but Paige Skoog transferred in from Forest Lake and goaltender Dylan Parker played in the Upper Midwest High School Elite League and did well.

2. Grand Rapids

F Travis Underwood (12) - 47 pts (17g, 30a)

F Nate Mondry (12) - 34 pts (20g, 14a)

D Jake Bischoff (11) - 23 pts (5g, 18a)

- The Thunderhawks are returning after a heartbreaking loss to Duluth East in the Section 7AA championship game last season, 2-1 in overtime.

- Grand Rapids returns 57% of their goal scoring during the regular season, 79 of 138 goals.

- Goaltender Dom DeGuiseppi graduated. A new puck-stopping technician will need to step up.

3. Elk River/Zimmerman

G Anders Franke (12) - 10 wins, 2.78 GAA, .898 save percentage

F Mitch Kierstad (12) - 24 pts (12g, 12a)

D Nick McCormack (12) - 20 pts (9g, 11a)

- I like the overall depth that the Elks are returning.

- They were not a great scoring team last season. They will need to improve on last year's 3.48 goals per game.

- The defense was pretty solid last season and should be again.

- Anders Franke is the center point of this team.

- If Franke has another solid season, the defense is better than last year, and the Elks can average over 4 goals per game, I think they should see over 14 wins during the regular season.

4. Cloquet/Esko/Carlton

F Karson Kuhlman (10) - 50 pts (16g, 34a)

F Adam Hanson (12) - 21 pts (12g, 9a)

F Beau Michaud (11) - 15 pts (8g, 7a)

- After Kuhlman, Hanson, and Michaud, the Lumberjacks only have two other players returning that scored goals.

- The defense returns five with experience, Max Reinertsen, Justin Hammann, Drew Dincau, Tanner Robideaux, and Eric Peterson.

- Senior John Scheuer should be fine in goal. He had 7 wins, 3.09 GAA, .890 save percentage and he was not the starter.

- Cloquet/Esko/Carlton should be decent but I do not expect them to exceed last year's 16 regular season wins.

5. Forest Lake

F Lucas Kohls (12) - 39 pts (15g, 24a)

F CJ Franklin (12) - 33 pts (23g, 10a)

F Tommy Tyson (12) - 21 pts (10g, 11a)

- I really like Kohls-Franklin-Tyson and they alone should help guide this team to a top-five finish in the Section.

- The Rangers do not have much depth in scoring or defense.

- A new goaltender will take over with Paige Skoog transferring to Duluth East.

6. Andover

G Chase Perry (10) - 4 wins, 3.70 GAA, .895 save percentage

F Davis Tollette (12) - 22 pts (4g, 18a)

F Nick Manney (11) - 16 pts (5g, 11a)

- The Huskies will need to find more scoring. Perry will be one of the best goaltenders in the Section.

7. St. Michael-Albertville

F Jake Larson (12) - 44 pts (26g, 18a)

F Jon Gibbs (11) - 22 pts (10g, 12a)

- This is the first year in Class AA for the Knights.

- St. Michael-Albertville should be at or towards the top in the Mississippi 8 Conference.

- Jake Larson should have another great season.

- I am looking forward to the Knights' meeting with Forest Lake on December 6th to get a better indication of where this team might be.

8. St. Francis

D Zach Foesch (11) - 28 pts (11g, 17a)

- The Saints were a very young team last season so they will have most of their team back.

- St. Francis will have to vastly improve on their three goals per game and they cannot give up 5.92 goals per game again if want to be competitive in the Section.

9. Cambridge-Isanti

- The defending Section 7A Champions are bringing back the most goal scoring in the Section and five experienced defensemen (Pechnoviks (Mike and Dylan), Schafer, Newbauer, and Rohwer).

- A new goaltender will step in to fill the big skates of graduated netminders Nathan Tromp and Tyler Rajkovich.

- The 2010-2011 state tournament was all abuzz about the performance that University of Minnesota-Duluth recruit Adam Johnson turned out. He should have another good year, maybe a 80 to 90 point season.

- Hibbing/Chisholm has depth so opponents will not be able to keep complete focus on Johnson alone.

- Joe Anderson, Mike Pechnovnik, and junior Derek Abrahamson are three more that could be in double-figures in goals this season.

- The Bluejackets will be very good but the new goaltender's play will be vital against the Section's Duluth teams and in the state tourney.

2. Duluth Denfeld

F Levi Talarico (11) - 38 pts (17g, 21a)

G Zach Thompson (11) - 12 wins, 3.46 GAA, .879 save percentage

D Ben Campbell (12) - 16 pts (7g, 9a)

- The Hunters are back after a year of remodeling their school while Duluth Central's school is closed forever. The Trojans will be missed.

- Duluth Denfeld does not return a lot of scoring this season. Junior Talarico stands out for the Hunters with his 17 returning goals while seven goals each by seniors Campbell and Brendan Johnson were the next best.

- The Hunters' defense and the goaltending combined could be the one of the best in Class A in the state.

- On defense, the Hunters return Campbell, Travis Samuelson, Nick Lavigne, Nate Beaulieu, Hermantown transfer Billy Grillo, and Duluth East transfer Nick Forbort. All six are seniors except for Samuelson, a junior.

- Junior goaltender Thompson is considered one of the best in the state. He played in the Upper Midwest High School Elite League this past Fall.

- Howie Hanson, Duluth News Tribune, had a chance to see Denfeld, Duluth Marshall, and Stillwater scrimmage recently. Hanson believes that this Hunters team could be Head Coach Kevin Smalley's best team ever.

3. Duluth Marshall

F Judd Peterson 43 pts (24g, 19a)

G Christian Coffman 9 wins, 2.73 GAA, .909 save percentage

D Jake Bushey 13 pts (7g, 6a)

- The Hilltoppers are not that far behind Duluth Denfeld in the rankings.

- Duluth Marshall has a sniper in Judd Peterson that scored more goals than the Hunters' Levi Talarico (17). Peterson comes back as the third highest goal scorer in the Section behind Hibbing/Chisholm's Adam Johnson (34) and Ely/Tower-Soudan's Billy Foy (27).

- The Hilltoppers have four experienced defensemen back in Bushey, Zach Isaacson, Doug Lewis, and Ryan Gotelaere.

- Senior goalie Christian Hoffman had a better 2010-2011 season statistically than Duluth Denfeld's Zach Thompson.

- Duluth Marshall does not have the returning depth that Hibbing/Chisholm or Duluth Denfeld have. That is the only reason they are third instead of first or second. I expect the Hilltoppers to have a very legitimate shot at winning the Section.

4. Greenway/Nash-Kee

G Erikur Arnason (12) - 9 wins, 3.69 GAA, .904 save percentage

F Alex Troumbly (11) - 31 pts (20g, 11a)

F Jayden Gangl (11) - 22 pts (11g, 11a)

- The Raiders had a decent season in 2010-2011. It should even be better this season.

- Erikur Arnason is back in goal after a successful season and offseason. He was one of the elite goaltenders in the Upper Midwest High School Elite League in the Fall.

- Seven experienced defensemen are back to help Arnason around the net, Jayden Gangl, Tyler Haigh, Broday Geisler, Zach Childs, Derek Staydohar, Josh Gross, and Colton Hill.

- Alex Troumbly will take center stage on a senior-led Raider team and I expect another 20 goals from him.

- The Raiders should be over .500 this season and make some noise in the Section.

5. International Falls

F Lucas Debenedet (11) - 23 pts (10g, 13a)

D Joel Skirten (12) - 16 pts (3g, 13a)

F Christian Kittleson (12) - 13 pts (7g, 6a)

- The Broncos have a little depth in scoring but only Debenedet returns with double-figures in goals.

- International Falls has four defenders back that played a majority of last season but, a new goaltender will be stepping in this year.

- The Broncos will need to improve on their 2.92 goals per game from last season and their 4.04 goals per game that they gave up.

6. Virginia/Mountain-Iron Buhl

F Tyler Goodrie (12) - 12 pts (3g, 9a)

- Reed Larson takes over the reigns as the Head Coach for the Blue Devils. He will have a project on his hands as this team seeks to rebuild.

- Last season's starting goaltender Andy Milbridge graduated.

7. Silver Bay/Cook County
