<p class="MsoNormal">This morning I was scheduling a patient and realized that the next time that I would see him would be in November. My oh my, how the year flies by! It has been a great year though, and I want to give you a quick update on what’s going on in my life.<span> </span>If you wonder why I am taking the time to write to my patients about what’s going in my life, it’s because when you become a patient here in my office I consider you a member of my extended family. I am always so excited to hear what is going on in your lives when you come in for your visits, with vacations, family, and work.<span> </span>So I want to give you a chance to hear what is going on in my life.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">As many of you know from the “Starfish” letter that I sent you a few months back, (oh, by the way, if you didn’t get my starfish letter just ask me next time you are in and I will get you one.<span> </span>It’s very powerful!)<span> </span>I got engaged to the most wonderful woman in this entire world, Angela Fay (I’m not biased, I swear!). Now as a male, I had absolutely no idea how much work planning a wedding is.<span> </span>I figured you rent a church, send all of your family and friends an invitation and “get hitched”. Well I was utterly wrong! It is amazing to me how many details there are to a wedding.<span> </span>It has been a lot of fun to help Angela do the wedding planning thing, and prepare for this great celebration.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Now I get to brag a little bit about my amazing fiancée. (Now just remember I’m not biased)<span> </span>Angela is a Washingtonian through and though, having grown up in Snohomish. She has never lived out side of our wonderful state. We met at church (Overlake Christian Church) one week and the rest has been history. Angela works in the telecom industry supplying internet to big businesses and loves her job. It’s great to find not only a spouse but truly a best friend! We love to be with our families and friends.<span> </span>Angela is a huge Seahawks football fan so we watch a lot of football together and root for the home team!</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">One of my passions and hobbies is learning new things and I am always reading some kind of book or going to a seminar to keep my skills sharp to be the best chiropractor that I can for you! Right now I am learning some new functional moving stretches and exercises and I am excited to show you some of these “movements” to help enhance the care you get here. One of my other fun hobbies is to play fantasy football with the guys I went to college with.<span> </span>When I was in school, the class room hours were extremely intense, (7 AM to 6PM and many times on the weekends) so “fantasy football” was our way to have fun and relax when we were not in class and the tradition has carried on as we are all now in practice. For those of you who care (I realize this may be only a few) Payton Manning is my quarterback and so far my team is winning!</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">One of the things that I tell you is how important exercise is, and this is a very important part of my life. I must be honest with you though, I get bored with the same old exercise routine very quickly and I am always looking for ways to keep fitness fresh and fun for myself. I have started a new routine recently called YRG (Yoga for Regular Guys) and am finding that it is a fun new way to stay fit. All in all it is so important to find an exercise routine that fits YOU and that you are willing to stick to.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div>Day in and day out I have the opportunity to meet patients in my office who have been suffering needlessly with pains and headaches, many times for years. When I look at what is wrong with these patients through motion x-rays, and ProAdjuster scans and begin adjusting them we find that the majority of them are in pain because the bones in their spines are out of alignment or stuck in place. It is my greatest privilege to bring alignment and function back to someone’s spine and watch the pain go away. But frankly I am frustrated! I am frustrated because I know that there are MILLIONS more people out there that are suffering on a daily basis with debilitating pain that would be relieved with chiropractic care. Some estimates suggest 25% of the population has a headache right now! A comprehensive U.S. study reported that 10 million Americans suffer moderate to severe disability from various forms of headaches. It’s time that people know there is an answer to their headaches other than potentially harmful medications.</div>
<p>When I met my wonderful girlfriend, Angela, she suffered with headaches on an ongoing basis. I found that the top bone in her neck (which I refer to as the “headache bone”) was out of alignment and was pinching on the nerves in her neck, causing her headaches. After correcting the alignment of this “headache bone”, her headaches have almost completely disappeared. Now she only gets them if she sleeps in an awkward position. I have had many, many cases just like Angela’s over the years and get amazing results. Because I want to get the word out about how powerful chiropractic is for treating headaches I have made July, “Freedom From Headache” month!</p>
<p>All month I will be holding events to help people understand how chiropractic care can help them get rid of their headaches. On July 16th and the 23rd I will be holding complimentary, no obligation headache evaluations consisting of a headache consultation, and a ProAdjuster scan to assess if someone’s spine is causing his/her headaches. Also on July 23rd at 6pm here at Back in Action I will be holding an informational headache class, on the different types of headaches and how to fix them.</p>
<p>•When bones of the spine lose their normal position or motion, sensitive nerves and blood vessels to the head can be affected.<br />
•When spinal nerves and related tissues are stretched or irritated, they can produce throbbing headaches.<br />
•Aspirin and medications may cover up these warning signs, but do not correct the underlying structural cause.<br />
•90% of people that come into Back in Action Chiropractic suffering from headache have a misalignment in their upper necks.</p>
<p>While I have seen amazing results in my own patients, there is also a growing body of other research that shows that chiropractic treatments are very effective for headaches.</p>
<p>“Researchers found that chiropractic patients experienced fewer side effects (than medication) and while both were effective during the treatment phase of the study, only the chiropractic patients continued to report fewer headaches when treatment ended.” [Boline, PD, Kassak, K, et al. “Journal of Manipulative and Physiological thereapeutics.” March/April 1995; Vol 18, No 3, pp. 148-154]</p>
<p>“Based on literature review of several headache treatment options, a panel of 19 multidisciplinary experts concluded that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for cervicogenic headaches and had significantly fewer side effects and longer lasting relief of tension type headache than a commonly prescribed medication.” [McCrory DC, et al. “Evidence Report: Behavioral and Physical Treatments for Tension type and Cervicogenic Headache.” Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center, Durham, North Carolina, January 2001.]</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class="ArticleHeading"><span>Overusing certain medications &#8212; including those used to treat headaches &#8212; can lead to &#8220;medication overuse headache&#8221; (MOH), and researchers have pinpointed the medications most at fault.</span></div>

<p><span>Upon reviewing the charts of 1,200 acute headache patients seen during 2005, 2000, 1995 and 1990, researchers from Princeton University found that diagnosis of MOH remained stable over the 15-year period. However, the drugs responsible for MOH changed dramatically:</span></p>
<ul style="list-style-type: disc;">
<li><span>MOH from ergotamine overuse (used to treat migraine headaches) fell from 19 percent to 0 percent</span></li>
<li><span>MOH involving triptans, a newer class of drugs, increased from 0 percent to 22 percent</span></li>
<li><span>MOH due to analgesics (painkillers) increased from 8 percent to 32 percent</span></li>
<li><span>Overuse headache from combinations of acute medications increased from 10 percent to 23 percent</span></li>
<li><span>MOH from opioid overuse decreased slightly</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span>Many patients overuse prescription medications, and the researchers recommended implementing public health initiatives to educate doctors and patients about setting limits on prescription and other medications, and raising awareness that overusing medications for migraine headaches can lead to MOH.</span><br />

<p>Do big muscles lead to the prevention of cancer?  That would be great wouldn&#8217;t it, get buff and cancer free!  Unfortunately studies have yet to show a direct correlation between muscle size and if you will get cancer.  But,they have shown that exercise does help with reducing our cancer risk. We all intuitively know that exercise and activity is vitally important to our health, but did you know that exercise plays an important part in cancer prevention?  Some of exercises cancer preventative effects include an increase in cardiovascular capacity (or how well our hearts are working), increased pulmonary capacity (how much air our lungs can hold), increase in bowel motility (how freely our digestive system flows), normalization in hormone levels, balances in <span id="lw_1241731975_1" class="yshortcuts">energy levels</span>, and increase in immune function, providing antioxidant defense, as well as repairing damaged DNA. If you are exercising now, keep it up! If you are not doing an <span id="lw_1241731975_2" class="yshortcuts" style="cursor: hand; border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed;">exercise routine</span>, start out small and work your way into a daily habit.  And then, yea, maybe you will get some big muscles while reducing your cancer risk.</p>

<p>&#8220;Don&#8217;t feed that to the dog, it&#8217;s not good for him!&#8221; I found myself<br />
thinking this before I went to give my dog a piece of bread. Then,<br />
instead of giving it to the dog, I ate it myself. The standard<br />
American diet has gotten so out of control that we eat things that<br />
we know are not even good for our pets! We can take a lesson from<br />
our pets. For the most part our <span id="lw_1240360085_1" class="yshortcuts" style="background: none transparent scroll repeat 0% 0%; cursor: hand; border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed;">dogs and cats</span> eat to live, not live<br />
to eat as we as humans have gotten so good at doing. Animals eat as<br />
much as they need for their bodies to survive. We usually eat till<br />
that giant serving of lasagna on our plate is totally gone. We know that<br />
we need to always have water for our pets and yet we rarely drink<br />
enough water to keep us from dehydration.</p>
<p>Lets start to rethink our <span id="lw_1240360085_2" class="yshortcuts" style="cursor: hand; border-bottom: #0066cc 1px dashed;">eating habits</span>. Anything that you would not<br />
feed to your pet probably should not be in your mouth.</p>

<p>Have you ever put together a puzzle only to find that you are missing one piece. What does it do? It ruins the entire picture doesn&#8217;t it? I tell my patients every day that they have to view their health as a puzzle. If you are missing one piece to the puzzle of wellness it leads to disfunction in the body, and that disfunction will eventually lead to disease if not addressed.</p>
<p>We are going to look at 4 pieces of the wellness puzzle although their are many more which I discuss on my website. The first is NUTRITION. You are what you eat! Or more correct would be your health and wellness are dictated by what you eat. Be proactive in learning what is good and what is not good for your body.</p>
<p>The second piece is Exercise. Suprise, suprise huh? But it is true! &#8220;If you don&#8221;t loose, you WILL loose it!&#8221; I always tell my patients that the day that they stop moving will be the day that they stop moving&#8230;in the ground! Motion is vital for the health and well being of the body.</p>
<p>The third is a healthy functioning nervous system. The NS is what runs the entire body. How long do you think you would live with out food? How about water? Now, how long do you think you would live if I took away your nervous system? Thats right, you would die instantly! It vitally important that the nervous system is running at 100%, 100% of the time!! Chiropractors are the only doctors that work to help optimize the nervous system. We take away any interference so that your brain can communicate with the rest of your body!</p>
<p>Forth is Positive Mental Attitude. With out PMA it is impossible to acheive wellness. The stress that is involved with a negative mental attitude will one day kill you, and it sure isn&#8217;t quite as fun as PMA either!</p>
<p>So go out and put your Wellness Puzzle together and make sure not to leave out any pieces!</p>

<p>Birth is a normal, natural process that&#8217;s been around since almost the beginning of humanity. As with any other task the body was created to perform, when you support normal functioning, you have your best chance at success.</p>
<p>The road down the birth canal and out into the world can be a trying one, particularly in the case of medical intervention and high-tech births. (You may recall <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&amp;db=PubMed&amp;list_uids=10904513&amp;dopt=Abstract" target="_BLANK">a JAMA study</a> showing the United States ranked last in neonatal mortality, infant mortality and for the health of newborns.) As a result, there has been an ever-increasing occurrence of traumatic birth syndrome.</p>
<p>Traumatic birth syndrome describes the presence of trauma-induced skull and spinal damage and spinal misalignment as a result of the birth process. As tough as birth is, going through it with the woman lying on her back, working against gravity, on medications to increase the intensity of labor, numb to the delivery muscles, and often accompanied by surgical interventions, makes it exponentially more traumatic.</p>
<p>When you think about this, it&#8217;s no surprise vertebral subluxation in infants is so common.</p>
<p><strong>How the Birthing Process Injures Spines</strong></p>
<p>During the pushing stage of labor, the spine may be injured as the fetus is compressed and pushed down the birth canal. The most frequent cause of subluxation in infants is the pulling, twisting and compression of the infant&#8217;s spine during birth. If something alters normal birth, you will frequently have subluxations occur at the point of greatest stress (upper and lower cervical vertebrae).</p>
<p>While in severe cases, this can result in more obvious, clinical nerve damage such as paralysis, more frequently, subluxations remain unnoticed by physicians and parents with health issues rising at a later time. Among them:</p>
<ul>
<li>Colic</li>
<li>Sleep disorders</li>
<li>Symptoms of lowered immunity</li>
<li>Poor development</li>
</ul>
<p>Pediatric expert Dr. Maxine McMullen states, &#8220;Subluxations should be analyzed and corrected as soon as possible after birth to prevent these associated conditions.&#8221; (1)</p>
<p>Moreover, these subluxations have been found to be severe enough to lead to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) due to the pressure they cause upward toward the lower brain (2) as well as creating numerous other disorders common to newborns, infants and young children.</p>
<p>Reports show chiropractic care can be helpful in such diverse disorders as cerebral palsy, seizure disorders, ear infections, the prevention of SIDS, and others. (3)</p>
<p>While chiropractic care is not a treatment for anything, the benefits of adjusting subluxation to remove interference has been particularly telling in the case of small children.</p>
<p>In fact, young people need chiropractic care as much as or more than anyone to maximize proper development and minimize the advent of common infant symptoms and disease.</p>
<p><strong>The Infant Adjustment</strong></p>
<p>One of the most interesting studies, based on examination and adjustment of 1,000 infants, was done by Dr. Gutmann, a German medical doctor. (4,5) He concluded blocked nerve impulses at the level of the first vertebrae can be the cause of central motor impairment and lower resistance to infections, especially those of the ear, nose, and throat. (6)</p>
<p>Dr. Gutmann&#8217;s research showed the children treated had success &#8212; almost without exception &#8212; for a variety of ailments by spinal adjustments at the atlas (top vertebra in the neck). Among the symptoms that responded favorably:</p>
<ul>
<li>Congenital torticollis</li>
<li>&#8220;Growing pains&#8221;</li>
<li>Infantile scoliosis</li>
<li>Bronchitis tonsillitis</li>
<li>Restless sleep</li>
<li>Disturbed motor responses with repetitive falls</li>
<li>An inability to thrive</li>
</ul>
<p>&#8220;If the indications are correctly observed,&#8221; states Dr. Gutmann, &#8220;chiropractic can often bring about amazingly successful results, because the therapy is a causal one. With developmental disturbances of every kind, the atlanto-occipital joints should be examined and in each case be treated manually in a qualified manner. The success of this treatment eclipses every other attempt at treatment, including especially the use of medications.&#8221; (7)</p>
<p>Most people would not consider Chiropractic care for infants and children. However, the fact of the matter is, children are very, very prone to misalignments of the spine. Their vertebra are not fully formed, nor are their ligaments and tendons fully strengthened. This, along with the fact that a child falls enough times in a day to hospitalize an adult, makes it clear children should be evaluated by a chiropractor for spinal abnormalities.</p>
<p>And, don&#8217;t question the safety rating for Chiropractic treating children. The process is strictly AAA and cannot even be compared to the safety of medicine.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, countless children suffer from the side effects of modern medication each week, causing malpractice insurance for pediatrics and obstetrics to be astronomical &#8212; reaching into the tens of thousands. Chiropractors, on the other hand, pay as little as $300-$500 annually for malpractice coverage.</p>
<p>Chiropractic makes good scientific, factual and common sense for your child. I urge you not to wait until they hurt or get hurt. Get them checked now!</p>

<p>Imagine being cooped up for months in 120-degree weather, in cramped quarters, an entire ocean away from home. Now add the threat of war and the constant possibility of enemy attack.</p>
<p>Troops stationed overseas in places like Iraq and Afghanistan often are confined to limited space and unable to play some of America’s favorite pastimes like baseball and softball. With the constant threat of snipers, mines, and terrorist activity, troops are left to find alternative sources for entertainment.</p>
<p>In an effort to bring safe forms of entertainment to the troops, Operation DVD was founded by Rev. Scott Dryden and his associate pastor Dan Watkins after being approached by a sergeant requesting DVD’s to take to the soldiers in Baghdad. The DVD’s are sent to all branches of the military.</p>
<p>Operation DVD’s goal is to collect one million, new and used DVD’s donated by the American public for the troops, ultimately supplying 200 to 250 titles in rotation at each base.</p>
<p>Locally, Back in Action Chiropractic in Bellevue has jumped on board. The chiropractic clinic is one of the few collection points in Washington. After learning about Operation DVD from a fellow chiropractor in the Midwest, Dr. Michael Weir decided he wanted to make a difference in the lives of those serving overseas.</p>
<p>“It kind of struck a chord for me. I had a patient at another office who served in Iraq, and he was telling me that it gets up to 120 degrees and literally they can’t step outside. They have to come up with other ways to entertain themselves with DVD’s and such,” explained Weir, who took over Back in Action Chiropractic a year ago.</p>
<p>Many soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines have portable DVD players and most bases have a reinforced recreation room equipped with a television and DVD player. Similar facilities exist on ships and carriers. Donated DVD’s also are sent to wounded troops who are receiving treatment in military and veteran hospitals all over the world.</p>
<p>Weir left his previous chiropractic job in Covington and moved to Bellevue to start his own practice. Searching for ways to get involved in the community, Weir volunteered for next year’s Relay for Life and now sits as the chairperson for team recruitment.</p>
<p>“Bellevue is just a great place to live and have a business and to really get plugged into the community,” Weir said. “I’m always looking for ways to give back and ways my patients can get involved and take ownership as well.”</p>
<p>Weir contacted Operation DVD and expressed his interest in helping with the project. A large collection box now sits just inside the door of Back in Action Chiropractic. Comedies and inspirational movies with strong moral and family values are encouraged, but Operation DVD will except any title donated. Children DVD’s collected are sent to the families back home.</p>
<p>“Some of these men and women who are over there fighting are my age. The fact that they’re over there is so humbling and the hardship that it must be to be away from your family and to not be able to get out and expend energy playing baseball and things. I just can’t imagine.” Weir said, adding, to have something like a feel-good movie to kind of get away for a couple of hours would be a Godsend.</p>
