Reflections of Summer—Looking to the Fall

It is hard to believe that August is almost here. At Hannaford we have a busy schedule during the summer. I would like to reflect upon three big summer activities recently completed.

Drama Camp (June 21-24). One of our largest groups of children were involved in Drama Camp this year. Twenty-nine young people worked diligently throughout the week and concluded with a fantastic performance for all to enjoy. Drama Camp provides a great opportunity for children to learn more about acting and to share great biblical truths through a children's musical.

Junior Camp (June 28-July 1). A wonderful time was had enjoying the beauty of God's creation at Mizpah. Twenty-four 4th - 7th graders had a great time and learned from the life of David.

Vacation Bible School (July 12-16). It was great to see children have a blast growing in their love for God. Several decisions were made by young people during the week. God's Word was studied, His praises sang, and a lot of fun was had by all.

As I reflect, I am excited to see children seek God and grow in their walk with Him. The many volunteers who poured their time and love into the lives of the children are appreciated. I thank God for His work throughout each of these activities.

Unfortunately, we can't stop and revel in the blessings for long. It is time to look forward to the fall. I ask that you pray with me for volunteers to fill the many positions needed this fall. It will be exciting to see God's work in AWANA, Sunday School, Children's Church, and our other children's activities.

Intentional Time With Your Children

Recently my wife and I were treated to a weekend with her parents. There were many benefits to the weekend. First, the weekend was their treat. For us it was a free vacation. Second, it was in Florida. The average daily high when we were there was the mid-seventies. Third, we were spoiled. They took us to some of their favorite restaurants and to see some beautiful sights. It was relaxing and refreshing.

They did have one rule - no Disney World. The goal of the weekend was to spend time together. We were not there to visit Mickey and spend time in long lines in order to enjoy amazing rides. Irene's parents wanted to make sure that we could spend some quality time together.

Irene's parents hit on a very important reality. We don't know how much time we will have to spend with those we love, so we had better be sure we make it a priority. As we raise our children, we need to have the same intentionality in spending time with our children. I am amazed at how fast they grow up. There will be no time that is easier than now. Make sure to schedule quality time before it is too late.

Discussing God—A Family Affair

Research tells us that the #1 determiner for mature faith growth for children is conversation with their parents about God. We all know that discussions about God with our children are important, but we all struggle doing it. Let’s look at some of the excuses given and responses to those excuses.

Excuse: I don't know what to say.

Response: It is true that we may not have all the answers. However, our children are not looking for an all-knowing responder; they are looking for a parent who has wisdom and a desire to know God more and share that desire with his or her children. There are also many resources that you can use to help with the difficult questions. It is true that if we don’t live out what we suggest, they will question us. We just need to strive to learn and live a life that pleases God.

Excuse: I don't want to preach to my children and turn them off.

Response: When examined carefully, this excuse holds no weight. When your children hear and see what you believe is important, it will impact their lives and influence their decisions.

Excuse: They may have questions that I cannot answer.

Response: Your children already know that you do not have all the answers. As mentioned earlier, there are many resources that are available to help. Your children will be impressed that you feel this is important enough to spend time seeking the truth.

Excuse: I am too busy.

Response: This excuse is honest, but sad. Often we will not admit this excuse, but it is often demonstrated in our life. If this is the reason we are not spending time with our children in meaningful conversation about God, we must re-examine our priorities. Do not allow the busyness of life to push out the vital issues our children need to discuss.

Excuse: It is too late.

We can all look back and see things we wish we would have done earlier. However, starting today is better than not starting at all. You may need to apologize to your children for not speaking to them sooner, but don’t use it as an excuse to not begin now. Your children will appreciate your honesty, and you can use whatever amount of time you have left before they leave the nest.

We have a great opportunity to impact our children. Let’s spend some time sharing with them about the mighty God we love and serve.

Summer’s Almost Here … Well, It’s Getting Closer

With snow on the ground and cold temperatures, it is hard to think about summer. However, summer will be here before we realize it. I am looking forward to our summer Children’s Ministry activities. It should be a great summer for growth and learning. Here is an update on three big summer events.

Drama Camp – June 21 – 25. This is a chance for children 2^nd grade and up to prepare and present a children’s musical. Each morning they will practice and also learn skills in drama and music. On Friday afternoon they will perform the musical for family and friends.

Junior Camp – June 28 – July 1. Children entering the 4^th – 7^th grades have the opportunity of spending 4 days at Mizpah. Games, crafts, water sports, and many other great activities will create a fun atmosphere while campers learn more about their Creator.

Vacation Bible School – July 12-16. Children can expect a great time as we travel on a High Seas Expedition. The adventure runs from 9:30 – 12:00 noon each morning for boys and girls age 4 – 6^th grade. Each participant will have a boatload of fun while plunging into the Bible and learning about God’s love and faithfulness.
