49,000 Volunteers Sign Off From Wikipedia In First Quarter

In the first quarter of 2009, Wikipedia has suffered a loss of net 49,000 volunteers. Whereas the figure was just about 4,900 for the same period last year according to Spanish researcher Felipe Ortega, who analyzed Wikipedia’s data. Though Wikipedia still boasts about 3 million active contributors, volunteers are leaving faster than new ones are joining.

Several reasons for the decline in volunteers have been offered by Wikipedia contributors, noted the Wall Street Journal. Many subjects have already been fully written about. The site has also enacted an array of rules to limit conflict among people who contribute to the same entries, especially on controversial subjects. But the rules often trip up new contributors who find their content removed without understanding why.

The decline in participation by the volunteers for Wikipedia have raised questions about the encyclopedia’s ability to continue expanding its size and improving its accuracy. Even consistency of the information is now under radar. “We need sufficient people to do the work that needs to be done,” says Sue Gardner, executive director of the foundation. “But the purpose of the project is not participation.”

Google’s Acquisition Continues With Ad Optimizer Teracent

The giant yesterday announced that the company has bought Teracent, a start-up, which customizes ads on the fly. While explaining it displayed an ad from Home Hardware and clubbing up with Teracent technology the ad displayed more detailed information such as location info, photos of the same and price.

Neal Mohan, Vice President, Product Management and Joerg Heilig, Engineering Director wrote in the blog post–

Teracent’s technology can pick and choose from literally thousands of creative elements of a display ad in real-time — tweaking images, products, messages or colors. These elements can be optimized depending on factors like geographic location, language, the content of the website, the time of day or the past performance of different ads. We’re looking forward to welcoming the Teracent team to Google and to making this technology available to our display advertising clients — including those who run display ad campaigns on the Google Content Network and our DoubleClick clients” company added.

Purchase price was not disclosed, however Teracent had been looking to raise something like $5 million in the year beginning and had before raised around $6 million, much of it from New Enterprise Associates. Google is fairly confident that this technology would help advertisers getting better results from ad campaigns.

Facebook Fun Costs Benefits To A Sick Women

A 29 year old Canadian woman has lost thousands of dollars as medical insurance benefits after here photographs on social networking site Facebook showed she is enjoying “good time”, despite being on sick leave. Nathalie Blanchard, a Quebec resident and employment of IT giant IBM was diagnosed with major depression. She went on a long leave from her job since last 18 months.

She was receiving monthly sick leave benefits from Manulife insurance company, till they blocked it recently, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported on Saturday. Although she called up the insurance company and said that she was available to work only due to Facebook. The agent of the company said Nathalie’s pictures on Facebook, some of which show her at Chippendales bar, having fun at birthday party and on a sun beach holiday – are evidence enough that she is no more ‘depressed’.

For this, Blanchard claimed that she undertook the revelry on the advice of her doctor as a means to get rid of ailment and that she has already informed Manulife about her trip. “I don’t think for judging a mental state that Facebook is a very good tool,” Blanchard’s lawyer stated. Blanchard estimates that the Facebook debacle has cost her thousands of dollars in benefits.

A Teenage Singer Arrested For Not Using Twitter

Sounds horrifying? Well, this is the first ever case where police in Long Island, New York arrested a teenage for not using Twitter. A teenage singer named Justin Bieber who was supposed to appear at Roosevelt Field mall on Friday, but did not due to the unruly crowd. Police apparently asked the help to disperse the horde by sending a twitter message, but claims he did not cooperate.

According to Newsday

Police arrested a senior vice president from Bieber’s label, Island Def Jam Records, James A. Roppo, 44, of Hoboken, N.J., saying he hindered their crowd-control efforts by not cooperating.

He was in custody Friday night, pending charges that could include criminal nuisance, endangering the welfare of a minor and obstructing government administration, Smith said.

“We asked for his help in getting the crowd to go away by sending out a Twitter message,” Smith said. “By not cooperating with us we feel he put lives in danger and the public at risk.

However, Justin Bieber did send out a message via twitter asking his fans to leave, but in fact it was too late.

Mozilla Made $79 Million During 2008

Last year the company managed to bring in $79 percent, which is up five percent from the last previous one. This may be clear why Mozilla released the details now, but this is sure that the revenue is increased by 12 percent from 2006 to 2007.

Mozilla Foundation chairwoman Mitchell Baker said

Our revenue and expenses are consistent with 2007, showing steady growth. Mozilla’s consolidated reported revenues (Mozilla Foundation and all subsidiaries) for 2008 were $78.6 million, up approximately 5% from 2007 reported revenues of $75.1 million. Country is set to launch mobile number portability (MNP) on December 31st. Four new firms, including ventures of international telecom operators Telenor, Etisalat and Batelco, are set to start service in India this year and MNP would surely make it easier for them to lure excising subscribers according to an analyst in telecom sector.

This changeover is expected to increase competition among operators and act as a catalyst to improve their quality of service. However, it is big relief for customers who were not satisfied with their present provider.

Facebook Is The Third Largest Video Sharing Site In US

When you think about video the first thought is YouTube. And then we have Hulu, MySpace and probably Facebook also. This social network giant, which is popular for sharing “What’s on your mind?” is slowly climbing top among video sharing space. United States where people are not much fond of Twitter are now growing their interest towards Facebook and is today the third largest video sharing sites.

According to Nielsen’s latest VideoCensus numbers,

Facebook jumped to No. 3 behind established video powerhouses YouTube and Hulu in terms of total streams. That’s up from No. 10 just last month. Facebook generated more than 217 million streams in October to more than 31.5 million unique viewers, up from 110 million streams to 23 million viewers in September.

The runner up trophy goes to Hulu that managed to get 632 million streams up from 437 million in September. Hulu is seeing some very strong growth, but Facebook is raiding up its rear at this point and, in spite of having three times less streams, if it holds to keep up the pace, the social network might also soon overtake Hulu as the second most popular video site in the US.

5 days ago twitter enables the Re-tweet functionality in few selected accounts but there were some issues so Retweet feature temporarily disabled by the twitter. After the continuous fixation/development of the work there were some reports of the missing “in reply to” links. Today twitter officially rolls that there will be a maintenance window Tuesday, November 17th at 11p Pacific.

Now when twitter rolls out the features of “Retweet to Share Tweets” on accounts then we get to know than why there was the maintenance today. (though i predicted that there might be server additions or any feature launch)

Now when you login through the web interface of twitter then you will notice the following status on the top of your homepage i.e “New! Retweet to share tweets (BETA)”

What is the official reaction of twitter?

In an official post by @Biz, (co-founder of Twitter) he described the importance of re tweet button and reasons for limited roll outs. He stated that:

Finally the issue is resolved and its due to corrupted CSS files.

Note: Most of the people reported that they issues are due to the bad css load but they don’t observed the new features like Inbox, Sent, Retweets by Other, Retweets by you and Your tweets retweeted.

Conclusion: There were new features but due to stylesheet loading problem all things appears to wierd and messed up. Vitor Lorenco, product designer at Twitter also reported in his tweet about the css uploading issue. Many times we face similar css issues on sites due to corrupted css uploads. Might be twitter had an error in the connection due to which few data packets were loosed while uploading the files.

6.Make sure that your keywords are specifically targeted for the content on your website.

For example you optimize your post title “30 Free Google Android Applications” to a wrong keywords like “Free Google Wave” or “Google applications” then users hitting on the post may not be interested on it.

Now every one knows that orkut is lagging behind rival social networking sites like Facebook and twitter. Facebook recently updated many features and adopt the basic functionality of twitter like status updates. Now Orkut follow the facebook and adopt the similar look but still lacks the synchronous status updates as in Facebook. Moreover Facebook enhanced with new applications, feeds features, different prototypes and most important the features of Publishing to Twitter from Facebook Pages. More over they have open api and lot of open option to build things on facebook. Is Orkut learning anything from Facebook? (perhaps yes !)

In order to fight back Google enhanced many features in new orkut but they seems to be cloning from facebook. Here i pointed out following two points:
1.New orkut have “Fewer pages, faster browsing” which is expected to be cloning of facebook lite (chek out the screen shots of facebook lite)

2. The targeted friend suggestions is expected to be cloning of facebook friends suggestions

In new orkut i liked the options to customize the profiles but still i’m missing the fanpage, FBML and applications of the facebook.

What i disliked in New Orkut?

I didn’t like the typography and UI of the new orkut as compare to previous versions. New Orkut is still in early phase and expected for the open api and better features.

This can serve great addition to companies that are looking to add their preferred clients, famous employees, influential people, groups etc.

You will no more find number of tweets there (Number of tweets is now accessible right below your id), as it is been replaced by this revamped feature. Direct message is an interesting feature that allowed you to converse privately, but this was available only for people whom you follow. Now you can send direct messages to one you are not following. But then this is matter of concern, as we have twitter filled with spammers. So we have another interesting feature to tweet people secretly away from bad eyes.

6. Manage lists Icon -

In your profile, you will find “manage lists” options in between follow and scrolling action button. This feature lets you to get people featured in any of the lists created by you.

Bit.ly fights with rivals by declaring it flagged and unsolicited ?

I think you are already known with many short URL generator websites but out of them bit.ly is my favorite (due to its tracking features). Today while working on Bit.ly, i noticed that it is declaring all the urls of tinyurl as flagged and unsolicited.

I noticed few results on Bit.ly which are listed as follows

1. First i test for the tinyurl where i short the http://www.google.com/webmasters/index2.html into http://tinyurl.com/y8swgbx. When i again try to short the tinyurl through bit.ly it reflects the warning messages.

Warning – this site has been flagged and may contain unsolicited content.

Latter i thought there might be any issues between bit.ly and tinyurl so i should check with another url shorter service.

2. I pick up is.gd and short the url http://www.google.com/webmasters/index2.html to http://is.gd/4vFvv. When i again try to short http://is.gd/4vFvv into http://bit.ly/4rnuPk, it reflects the same warning messages.

4. http://bit.ly/2tgXDe with source http://u.nu/9ctm3 also reflects the warnings

5. http://bit.ly/RBwmz with source http://tr.im/CEkY also reflects the warnings

6. After searching for other url shorter service i found re-url.me. I again short the http://www.google.com/webmasters/index2.html into http://re-url.me/2755 and that into http://bit.ly/2DBHO7.

Observation: This time http://bit.ly/2DBHO7 doesn’t reflect any warning and successfully redirect to http://www.google.com/webmasters/index2.html

Question: Why Bit.ly ban the redirects to other url shorter services ? Is it due to competitions or to really avoid the phishing? If we ask this question to bit.ly then they will sure say that “It is hard to track every urls so its better to auto scrap the urls having questionable re-directions”
