Where do you go? After you take the time to learn all that you can from the people that are living in your family, you will want to take the time to gather the facts that may go further back. You may need to take the time to learn about them more so than what these people can tell you. To do this, you can turn to the internet for help. Believe it or not, there are many ways in which the web can help you to get the results that you are looking for. And, since they are right at your fingertips, there is no way that you have to stop your search for genealogy at what your family can tell you.

If you go back a little farther, you may get to see some very interesting things about your family. You may get to learn who they were and what happened to them a little farther into history. To do this, though, you should tap into the resources that are on the web. You can start by looking at the genealogy resources that are offered to you right on the web. This will include such things as religious organizations that have many databases of families that have been with them including their pasts. You may want to look at genealogical resources that are strictly offered to you through the web through organizations that actually make this part of their job. In fact, you may also want to use message boards, blogs and other website forums in which others gather to look for those that are in their lives and in their pasts.

Another option that you have on the web is that of using the professionals that offer their services on the web. There are many of these. You will likely pay for their service, but this will be a good way to tap into the resources that may be beyond your reach. Many people will take the time to use these services because they offer an extensive line of resources to tap into. These may include a wide range of things that will allow them to date back your family much farther then you would be able to do on your own. Because they do this professionally, they have resources in place to make the task easier to do. Using them or using your own skills, the goal is to secure the history that your family has. You can do it and you will be rewarded for doing so.

Russel Clark
.

Birthday Thoughts

.
Birthdays are generally associated with celebrations. Partying, receiving good wishes, gifts and holidaying without any care in the world. These are the main themes of everyone's birthday. But what if I am asked to talk to God on my birthday? I will speak thus:

God, thank you very much for bringing me in this world. Without your wish, I would not have been here. God, I also thank my parents for bringing me to this world with your blessings. I am especially obliged to my mother for taking my care when I was inside her body. God, I thank my father for showing me how to live in this world and being with me in my early days. God, today, I thank everyone who has played any role in helping me in my life till today. I also thank the earth, the sky, the nature and everything without which the life would be no where.

God, I also apologize to everyone today. I might have knowingly or unknowingly hurt many people in my life. I apologize to them. God, I might have done many wrong things in my life but I have also done few good things with your guidance. God, I am proud of my achievements and myself. I know that I may not get all that I want and may not reach all of my goals, but with your guidance I will try to achieve as many of them as possible. I want to contribute in a small way to make this world a better place. Please guide me about that. What should I do so that I get inner satisfaction of doing something for the society.

God, on my birthday today, I wish to remove all anger, hatred, jealousy, envy and every other negative emotion from my heart. I want to cleanse my heart and refill it with feelings of love and joy. God, please help me celebrate my birthday this way. God, Thank you.

cdmohatta
.

The Great Genealogical Need

.
For those of you that are experienced genealogists and have so far weathered the storms of years of research through dusty archives, old Bibles, sweet ancient relatives with unreliable memories, cold cemeteries, civil war records and all sorts of Vital Records, and who are now in the ‘nirvana’ of online research…this article is for you.

Who have you introduced, of late, to this most exciting and worthwhile personal and family past-time, next to the nurturing of our immediate family of course?

May I ask respectfully, but with conviction, when was the last time you shared with somebody close to you a heart warming story about one of their direct, but deceased, ancestors: Perhaps something that they have never heard before? When did you last take a grandson or granddaughter to visit a cemetery, or an old church where they could see some old baptismal records, or to the Social Security Death Index(SSDI) and Social Security Death Records(SSDR) offices, or some other place of relevant interest?

For that matter, again with respect, when was the last time you shared with somebody, who does not get involved with what you know to be of great personal value, something of a ‘testimonial’ about what is going on in the earth in relation to those who are responsible for their being here in the first place???

Of the thousands that somehow do commence the pursuit of genealogy (family history), only few ‘survive’. There are many reasons for this high ‘mortality rate’. One of the most often quoted is, “it simply takes too much of my time”. It’s true! Genealogy does consume time, and lots of it. But this is more than just a search for names, dates and places; it is a search for the discovery of our own identity, and in a sense, the discovery of our nation, as we seek for those of our ancestors who left their footprints somewhere in time. Unfortunately the ‘apprentices’ get worn out before they discover the true joy of this ‘recreation’. This should be genealogical ‘recreation’, not genealogical ‘work’.

What is needed to maintain the interest and commitment of our ‘new’ colleagues? The answer is simple: They need to find the ‘stories’ of their ancestors, not just the data. It’s the stories that will keep them coming back, back to the genealogical libraries, online facilities, the churches, the cemeteries, back to those Vital Records, back to their living ancestors, back for more. But they’ll need more data won’t they? Yes they will, because the data will help them to find the stories.

Encourage them not to get lost in those early days on all the collateral lines, dealing with cousin ‘this’, and second cousin ‘that’. The almost irresistible emotional attraction lay in the sagas of the direct ancestors; the men and women from whom they sprang.

It will help if they understand that each of us is a physical and ‘spiritual’ composite of those who have gone before. We need to encourage them to look for the stories that are behind the names, dates and places, so that they can begin to see and feel who they really are: To see the character traits in ancestors, that they recognize in themselves, otherwise, researching the Social Security Death Index (SSDI), the Social Security Death Records (SSDR), the myriad of Vital Records such as birth, death and marriage certificates, old church baptismal records and the like, old wills, probate documents and shipping lists, will simply wear them out. Rather than searching through the cemeteries for those interesting headstones, they’ll be buried under one.

It may come as a surprise to many of you, but genealogical research needs every advocate and devotee possible. Why? Because the fact is, that the more researchers there are, the more records we discover and the more relevant research we produce.

Since the first Genealogical Society was established back in 1836, more pages of research have been produced than existed in the world at that time. For history to make a contemporary contribution, whether family history or the history of communities or nations, it has to be researched, written about and indexed. It has to be made available, to be given ‘true’ meaning, by being able to be absorbed into the lives of each of us; to touch us, to motivate us, or perhaps to cause us to revile at certain practices of the past. History, and its records, cannot be allowed to lie dormant and unused.

If you are one of those who has a life-time membership at the SSDI or SSDR etc, and you are known in geneological circles from New York to San Francisco, and you are in the Guinness Book of Records for the most names submitted to the IGI, please ask yourself, notwithstanding all the data you have collected, is it not the stories about your direct ancestors that really touch you, and help to fill your heart and mind with the wonder of all that has come to you through them?

Well, if this strikes a chord with you, please, make up your mind today, that you will do something that will stimulate another person’s interest? You might just add another valuable researcher, perhaps the best yet, to Genealogical research?

Leo Talbot
.

The Importance Of Grandparents

.
Most of us are fortunate enough to have grandparents close by at the time we are born. In fact when our mothers become pregnant to bear us, no doubt the must have turned to their parents, our grandparents, for advice and assistance. This is probably because our parents were young and needed someone to hold their hands; someone who had been there before. Undoubtedly, most of our parents would have depended on their parents during that crucial time/ following this, during our childhood too, our grandparents would have been there at the side of our parents to help bring us up when we were infants. Needless to say, we owe much to our grandparents.

This attitude of helping to look after one’s grandparents is only present in members of the human race. No other known animal on the planet seems to have this particular trend. Strangely also, the tradition of grandparents playing an important role in the birth and upbringing of grandchildren seems to be a universal trend among humans. Just like the fact that the best arrangement for couples in the human race is to be together for life, subject to divorce not taking place, grandparents too must have been an outcome of evolution. It is probable also that through the five million years of man’s existence on this planet, we have found that having grandparents around is the best thing. The origins of traditions are lost in oblivion, but we may be sure that they are founded upon what is practical; usually after several experiments. In this way, the idea of grandparents remaining close to us has been found to be a blessing.

All of us know grandparents as symbols of wisdom; they speak from experience and tell us how to go where they have been. They may not be up to date in matters of science and other branches of knowledge, but they would have been through the ‘school of hard knocks’/ they are usually experts at relationships. Many of us have learnt at their knees things that have saved us pain in later life. It is grandparents who tell us that though money and other symbols of wealth are great to have, the real values in life are the non-material kind. They themselves had probably discovered this through a lifetime of pain and sorrow. We often see them trying to make up to their children -- our parents -- for their having being strict, perhaps even unkind, to them when they were young. As it often turns out, they often try to parent us to make up for the mistakes they made in parenting their own children. Thus, by being close to them, many of us who listen to them are saved from the pain of making the same painful mistakes.

It is unfortunate that, as part of the modern lifestyle, we are losing contacts with our grandparents. It is just not wise at all, but it is happening all around us, that after five million years of evolution, we are now discarding some of the most beautiful aspects of being a human. Pushing grandparents out of the scene is one of them. Many of them are being exiled in old folk’s homes; where being deprived of something useful to do and of being loved and wanted, they waste away to early ends. One can only hope that the trend will be reversed; if not for the sake of our grandparents -- then at least for the sake of the wisdom they have to offer all of us.

Ken Charnly
.

Organizing Family Discoveries

.
It's great when the family gets together, but you know that it'll be much greater if all family members can get to know each other and share the family history. Much interest had been given to genealogic researches in the past years, but still, the most common form of genealogic research remains to be the family tree and its branching out. A family tree is a cinch to make if you intend to include only members of your immediate family (parents, sibling, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins) but what if you aim to include the three generations before you? Or what if you intend to find out who your ancestors are? This entails a much larger scope and therefore a more thorough research. This also means more extensive notes, files, pictures, interview transcripts, and other documents. To save you from disorganization and make your research easier, Carolyn Billingsley and Desmond Allen have devised an efficient filing system specifically for genealogic research.

The materials they prescribed are easy enough to procure such as a filing cabinet (boxes will do), data records, pens with black ink, file folders, notebook (loose leaf), and notebook dividers. They recommend that you start by making nuclear family records. Printed forms are available to make it easier. Record information by family. Separate your own family record from that of your parents. Use marriages as guide, as each marriage requires a separate data sheet. Fill out forms backward, starting from the present and to the past. Make all information on each family uniform, leave spaces for unknown data and fill them out later when you got the missing links. It is also important to indicate sources of the information. Include birth certificates, death certificates, and marriage certificates with the members' personal information but remember to use only photocopied records. Label sheets with family surnames and put them in file folders duly labeled. Collect and store these nuclear family sheets to larger family groups. To do these use bigger filing folders. Label these folders by the family patriarch's name, for example, your grandfather's name. Include in this folder all files of your uncles, aunts, parent, married siblings, married cousins, etc. An optional step is to add a contents page to give you a clue about what is inside the folders. These will make it easier for you to fill out your family tree and its branches. An organized research will save you the trouble of diving into heaps of paper searching for documents that you think are there but have no idea where to find.

William Teleo
.

Evolution

.
Much has been said and written about the work of Charles Darwin, much of it sadly based on misunderstanding of the scientific theory he expounded. The truth is that what Darwin spelled out in his ‘Origin of Species’ has stood the test of time and really is our best explanation of the development of life on earth. The description of evolution stands as one of the truly great advances in human understanding, and stands alongside Einstein’s relativity and the works of the quantum physicists for its resilience and relevance.

Nothing in Darwin’s work is a comment on human society, or the relative worth of individuals in that society. The work describes the life and survival of species, and does not ascribe merit or blame for that life or to the survival or extinction of any species.

The process of evolution is simple, elegant and compelling. Every living species, including our own, strives to meet two basic demands of life. These are the seeking of nourishment, and the reproduction of itself. As the one thinking species, we live far more complex lives than simply that of pursuing a meal and a mate. It is surely true however that without these two things our finest achievements would be no more than monuments to our passing.

The margins for survival or extinction are quite small. We live in a dynamic and changing environment, with varying pressures constantly at hand. Where these pressures are incremental or rhythmic in form, a species has its best chance of survival. For example, the constant background rhythms of the tides and the seasons form selection pressures that are rarely catastrophic, but none the less influential. A winter that is a little colder will not destroy a complete species, but will allow the survival of those members that, perhaps by chance, cope best with the colder season. This process will then have nudged the species in the direction of favoring the cold survival trait. Future generations tend to inherit this trait, since the survivors will breed next summer, those that did not survive will never breed again.

Played out over hundreds of millions of years, life adjusts, copes and explores the possibilities. No species is perfect, but survival alone is itself a triumph. Life on Earth is a breath taking panoply of diversity, complexity, magnificent beauty and sometimes absurdity, where every niche has been explored and occupied.

In the last paragraph of ‘Origin of Species’ Darwin wrote ‘There is a grandeur in this view of life’. We are part of that grandeur, and should feel as one with all life on Earth.

Ken Charnly
.

Know For Certain With A Paternity DNA Test

.
With the breakdown of many family safeguards we in society, the need to establish paternity for children is becoming more critical than ever. It's no secret that the court system has increasingly gone after dead beat dads who aren't supporting their children. This is as it should be.

The problem however is that often in relationships that have gone bad, claims of paternity and demands for child support are made on the latest convenient male partner who may or may not be the actual father. Once this type of claim is made, it becomes a big issue for the man especially if he's not the legitimate father of the child.

And the risks are high. The courts have demanded child support payments from fathers, even to the point of impoverishment. Failing to make the demanded court ordered child support payments can also result in many penalties, not the least of which is garnishment of wages to pay support. In addition however, all tax returns can be withheld and even documents like a drivers license renewal can be refused by the state to dads who are behind on child support.

Another aspect of paternity is what about a father who is not afforded his rights to be with his child because the mother has claimed the child isn't his? This is a case where a home paternity DNA test can establish if the man is the legitimate father and entitled to visitation and involvement with the child.

It's not the intent of this article to take sides one way or the other on this matter. The facts are that having a child obligates the parents to care for that child. So the ramifications of being identified as fathering a child can have serious and long lasting effects on the life of a man.

If you father children, it's your responsibility to care for them. If they're yours, you should also have the right to be involved win their lives.

But what if you're not the father however? Why should a man be obligated to support children who are not legally or biologically his?

This is where a home DNA paternity test can help. These at home DNA kits are simple to use and accurate to the point where DNA results are routinely used as evidence in court. At the very least, establishing paternity using a home DNA test kit can make going to court a much less stressful event.

These DNA tests are inexpensive and offer significant peace of mind for the parents. They are accurate to at least 99.99% positive that you are the father but are also 100% accurate in establishing you are NOT the father of the child.

Although it's ideal to have the mother, child and the claimed father tested, the dna testing method does not require the mother to be involved to obtain an accurate test.

Once a DNA test kit is delivered, you need to collect the samples. This is an easy swab of you and the childs mouths. Send the samples into the DNA test lab for processing and in about a week, your results are delivered to you.

It's a sad day when claims of fatherhood are made with such dire consequences for all concerned. Using a home paternity DNA test kit can establish your rights and obligation to a child one way or the other.

Abigail Franks
.

How to choose the right paternity test

.
The last decade has witnessed the most impressive advancements in genetic technology. The proposal of deciphering the complete sequence of the human genome some 16 years ago has unleashed an "arms race" between public and private ventures with no precedent in life sciences. In an implacable battle to publish the first draft of the complete human genome, a multi-national, publicly funded consortium and a large biotech company owned by the billionaire Craig Venter spend billions in developing new technologies that allow rapid and accurate sequencing of DNA. This brought enormous benefits for biological and medical research, and allowed for better treatments and diagnostic tools.

Genetic testing is one of the fields that greatly benefited from these outcomes. As we know from famous TV series, today is possible to finger out a criminal by analyzing a single hair or a tiny drop of saliva. A more widespread application of this technology is that of paternity testing. A doubtful father can easily order a DNA testing kit, take a sample of himself and his child and send it out to a DNA testing facility. In a matter of days, he will receive a report confirming of ruling out his biological fatherhood on that child.

Although establishing paternity is the most frequent reason for having a DNA test done, there are many other applications. For example, it is also possible to determine other familiar relations such as brother/sisterhood, maternity, paternity when the alleged father is not available and so on. People can also have a detailed analysis about their ethnic and genealogical background. These kinds of tests are often made out of curiosity, but sometimes they can be very helpful. It is frequent that people are excluded from certain benefits that are intended for a specific ethnic group, such as Native Americans because they cannot demonstrate their ancestry. DNA testing is an effective and conclusive way to prove a person's ethnic ancestry.

So far, everything looks fine. You need to have a DNA test done, so you do some research online. What you will find is an overwhelming spectrum of DNA labs offering paternity tests, and of course, each of them claims that they are "the best lab". What to do? Pick the first you come across? Pick the cheapest? You don't need to be an expert to decide, but knowing the difference among all those labs will allow you to make a wiser decision. Why is this important? The kinds of questions you seek to answer through a DNA test are not trivial. A man who is not sure if he is the true father of his children cannot accept a "maybe" as an answer, can he? Well, that is what he'll get if he chooses a cheap DNA test from an inexperienced lab.

All DNA tests are essentially similar in their bare basics: they are all based on the same biological principles and use the same kind of analytical methods. There are, however, some differences you should take into account.

One important difference is the number of genetic markers they look at. Genetic markers are simply specific regions in the human genome that tend to be different among people. Imagine there is a region for which there are 5 different "types" among humans. You are most likely to have the same type as your father at the same region. However, since there are only 5 different types in the population, your are also sharing the type with many other people that are not related to you, so that looking at this single region will not tell for sure who your father is. If we look at another region, the chances for sharing both of them with unrelated people are lower, but it is still possible. As the number of markers increase, the probability of a random match (sharing the same markers with an unrelated person) is lower. The best paternity tests use as much as 16 different markers. Having a match for all 16 markers by chance is virtually impossible, so a perfect match conclusively tells that the two persons are father and child. Why not using even more markers? Because there is no need to (with 16 markers, the probability of a false result is nil), and adding more markers to the analysis would only make the test more expensive. Why not less than 16? Many labs use between 4 and 8 markers to make the test cheaper. By choosing one of these you may save a few dollars, but your doubts will not be completely wiped out. Do you find this acceptable? Surely not.

The second most important source of false results of DNA testing is, paradoxically, one of its strengths. DNA tests are based on a technique called PCR (for Polymerase Chain Reaction). PCR was a revolutionary invention that warranted its creator a Nobel Prize. One of the most important features of PCR is its sensitivity: it is possible to analyzed minute amounts of DNA (in theory it can be done with a single cell). On one side, one can analyzed DNA from a single hair, a tiny spot of blood or even from the saliva obtained from a used cigarette, but the high sensitivity has a downside: it is very easy that such small samples become contaminated with DNA from other individuals, such as the police detective that gathered blood spots at the crime scene, the lab technician who processed the sampled and so on. Truly professional DNA labs follow strict guidelines and protocols to avoid contamination and have University-trained personnel. In this regard, if you send your DNA sample to an inexperienced or ill-equipped DNA lab, you risk a false result since somebody else's DNA may be analyzed instead of yours due to improper manipulation or use of cheap or defective lab materials.

If you are thinking of having a DNA testing done, being for establishing paternity, genealogical inquiry, determination of Native American status or other reasons choose carefully. Avoid labs offering very low prices. Check thoroughly to have an idea about the price ranges out there. Only labs offering a multi-marker (ideally 16 for the standard paternity test) tests should be trusted. Avoid labs that, judging from their websites appear to be small or amateur. Consider that some companies are offering "ready-to-use" DNA testing labs that can be used by anyone to offer cheap DNA testing. DNA testing should only be performed by qualified personnel and equipment. Check the author's biography for recommended DNA testing services.

James ryan
.

Ponds and Waterfalls

.
Ponds and waterfalls are fast becoming the focal point or centerpiece of many landscapes and properties today. Architects, builders and owners of both commercial and residential property are discovering the joy, pleasure and financial benefits that adding a water feature or water garden can afford.

Increased Income:
Incorporating a water feature into a design provides an edge over the competition. Adding the element of water is adding the second most important element on earth. It is the most important substance on earth for supporting life, second only to oxygen. Landscape designers charge $150 to $1,500 for designing a water feature. They can easily add thousands of dollars of additional revenue per year by doing so. Water features can quickly become your specialty or trademark, and a major source of extra income.

Increased Property Value
Professionally constructed water gardens or water features not only will increase the equity in a property, but they add unique charm and appeal for future buyers. Most neighborhoods in America consist of tract homes. Every fourth, fifth or sixth home is identical, the only differences being superficial in nature. The only distinguishing characteristics are accoutrements such as house trim and landscaping.

Over the past 25 years many of my water garden clients have discovered that the deciding factor in the sale of their home was their water feature. And just as important is the fact that their equity had increased seven or eight times what they had originally invested in their water feature. Their water garden had given them the advantage over other homes with similar square footage that had more ordinary landscaping.

Esthetic Value
With well over 1,900 water garden clients, I could not count the number of times I have heard them say that their water garden has brought them more long-term joy and pleasure than anything they have purchased in their life. They are providing powerful testimony to the calming, relaxing and alluring effects of a waterfall.

Educational Value
A water garden provides entertainment, education and emotional relaxation. It is a live “Discovery Channel” in your back yard. Many people take vacations to travel to exotic tropical places like an island paradise or a far-away rain forest. Little do they realize that they could have some of the very same wildlife on their own property to enjoy every day!

Gathering Information
Whether you are looking for information on how to professionally build or maintain a water garden, waterfall or pond, or you are interested in designing your own personal waterfall, or you are interested in learning how to add digital designing to your existing water garden business; the internet is a good place to start.

Common Mistakes
Just keep in mind that there are thousands of websites touting rubber liner construction. Liner ponds are not necessarily the least expensive way to go. In most cases, unless they are installed properly, they will leak as a consequence of burrowing rats, mice, ground squirrels, chipmunks, gophers or tree roots; and heavy rocks or sharp objects.

There are only a couple of sources for digital design programs for designing water gardens. There are free DVD presentations available on training movies to teach the digital design of water gardens.

Steve Buchanan
.

Genealogy & Family Trees

.
For many of us, comprehending our family’s rich and diverse history may not be the easiest task at hand. Many extended families are marked by numerous divorces and separations, the conjoining of several lineages and even adoption. While figuring out one’s family tree may look intimidating, genealogy services are a reputable source in untangling even the most complex family background.

A genealogy service allows inquisitive individuals to enter their family names and scour through results in the family tree database. While every service is unique in its search mechanisms, one popular genealogy service reported by 6StarReviews.com is Ancestry.com. Ancestry gives users access to fun facts like the meaning of surnames and international record collections for paying members.

Say you’re a “Smith” and you feel like the quest for your true family background may be worthless because of the prevalence of your last name. One genealogy service, One Great Family, allows members to utilize special family tree software and link their lineage with global ancestry links. That way, you’ll be able to browse through existing records and have your family tree updated automatically for you.

There is no feeling quite like knowing where you came from and discovering a hidden family secret, such that you’re related to Abraham Lincoln or Marilyn Monroe somewhere down the line. While relying on Uncle Barry’s word that you’re delineated from royalty may be trustful on your part, a genealogy and family tree service can truly divide fact from fiction.

Kelly Liyakasa
.

How To Plan For Shrubs In Your Garden

.
Used judiciously, shrubs can add beauty and make your landscape easier to maintain. Used incorrectly, they become time-consuming maintenance problems.

Nearly every American home features a foundation planting-a vegetative border that skirts the house and hides the foundation from view. In many cases, the homeowner spends much time and effort maintaining the appearance of the foundation planting; neglecting to do so would compromise the home's overall attractiveness and value. You can, however, reduce the amount of maintenance required, imperative for the accessible landscape.

Spend some time evaluating your foundation planting. Ask yourself the following questions:

* Does it enhance the appearance of the home?
* Does it obscure architectural details?
* Are windows and entryways shaded or blocked by overhanging branches?
* Are portions of the walls or the foundation kept constantly damp by shading vegetation?
* Do overgrown shrubs make it difficult to perform maintenance on the house?
* Do dense plantings provide possible hiding places for intruders?
* Have certain plants outgrown their neighbors and produced an unbalanced or awkward effect?
* Has the landscape kept up with the times, or does it date your home? Fashions in landscape design, like fashions in clothing, change over the years.

Updating your foundation planting is a good way to beautify your home and reduce its maintenance requirements.

Begin planning by photographing your home and foundation plantings. Study other designs. The landscape designs around fast-food restaurants are a great source of ideas. Because anything planted in these high-traffic areas must look good and stand up to a lot of abuse and neglect, you can see what low-maintenance plants do well in your region. Most of these commercial landscapes are done by professional designers; study how they blend texture, color, form, and height to achieve a pleasing effect. Ask for the names of landscape designers who have done an especially nice job; it costs surprisingly little to have a professional design drawn.

Choose plants wisely. Planting yews, arborvitae, or larger juniper varieties as foundation shrubbery is probably the single biggest mistake. These are by nature big, fast-growing, dense trees, not shrubs-excellent for formal hedges, allees, or topiary, but unsuitable for foundation landscaping. Where these shrubs are planted away from the house, you can reduce maintenance by allowing them gradually to revert to their natural size and shape. Otherwise, remove them.

Eliminate sheared, geometrically shaped shrubs. Perfect cubes, spheres, and cones are maintenance nightmares and have no place in the accessible landscape.

Replace a high-maintenance foundation planting or island bed with an assortment of manageable varieties such as low-growing or dwarf junipers, azaleas, cotoneasters, barberry, and ornamental grasses. Doing so will cut your maintenance time to nearly zero, add color and lively form to your home, and update your landscape.

Avoid placing close to the house plants that are thorny and rambling, such as roses or pyracantha; tall and spreading, like forsythia or lilac; and invasive or climbing, like some euonymus. These are not necessarily high-maintenance species, but they are best reserved for specimen plantings elsewhere in the garden, where their natural form can develop unchecked.

Common design mistakes include foundation plantings that are too big or too small in relation to the house; monotonous, one-color, onespecies plantings; too much diversity; and awkward placement of shrubs. Strive for plantings that lead the eye toward the main entrance, balance the structure of the house with its surroundings, and exhibit a changing palette of color year-round. With a little thought, you can design a foundation planting that is both attractive and easy to care for, no matter where you live or under what conditions you garden. You may choose either a fairly formal arrangement of shrubs, balanced on both sides of the entryway, or a looser, less structured look. Move plants around on paper, grouping and regrouping them until you have a pleasing arrangement.

Whether formal or informal, two simple rules apply: Use only three or four varieties of plants, and put low-growing varieties in front of tall ones.

Select shrubs planted away from the house for their low-maintenance characteristics, too. Allow sheared, geometric-shaped plants to return to their natural state, or remove them. Group shrubs together and mulch well, at least 2 feet beyond the farthest spread of their branches. Doing so will conserve moisture and make mowing easier. Use lowgrowing, shade-loving shrubs as understory plantings beneath trees; this cuts down on maintenance time and provides cover for wildlife.

Simone Piette
.

Planting Fruit Trees For Your Garden

.
Fruit trees

bear at different times of the year. For example, there are apples for early season, midseason, and late season (well into fall), so it is wise to select trees for the season you want. Just how long it will be before trees will bear is another consideration; apples and pears bear in 4 to 6 years; plums, cherries, and peaches bear in about 4 years.

Besides considering bearing season and length of bearing, you should also think of size. In addition to standard-sized fruit trees there are dwarf varieties that grow only a few feet. There are also different kinds of apples, peaches, or cherries; your local nursery will tell you about these. Your nursery also stocks the type of trees that do best in your area, so ask for advice. Your trees must be hardy enough to stand the coldest winter and the hottest summer in your vicinity.

Many varieties of fruit trees are self-sterile, which means that they will not set a crop unless other blossoming trees are nearby to furnish pollen. Some fruit trees are self-pollinating or fruiting and need no other tree. When you buy your fruit trees, ask about this. Fruit trees are beautiful just as decoration, but you also want fruits to eat.

Buy from local nurseries if possible, and look for 1- or 2-yearold trees. Stone fruits are usually 1 year old and apples and pears are generally about 2 years old at purchase time. Select stocky and branching trees rather than spindly and compact ones because espaliering requires a well-balanced tree.

Whether you buy from a local nursery or from a mail-order source (and this is fine too), try to get the trees into the ground as quickly as possible. Leaving a young fruit tree lying around in hot sun can kill it. If for some reason you must delay the planting time, heel in the tree. This is temporary planting: dig a shallow trench wide enough to receive the roots, set the plants on their sides, cover the roots with soil, and water them. Try to keep new trees out of blazing sun and high winds.

Prepare the ground for the fruit trees with great care. Do not just dig a hole and put the tree in. Fruit trees do require some extra attention to get them going. Work the soil a few weeks before planting. Turn it over and poke it. You want a friable workable soil with air in it, a porous soil. Dry sandy soil and hard clay soil simply will not do for fruit trees, so add organic matter to existing soil. This organic matter can be compost (bought in tidy sacks) or other humus.

Plant trees about 10 to 15 feet apart in fall or spring when the land is warm. Then hope for good spring showers and sun to get the plants going. Dig deep holes for new fruit trees, deep enough to let you set the plant in place as deep as it stood in the nursery. (Make sure you are planting trees in areas that get sun.) Make the diameter of the hole wide enough to hold the roots without crowding. When you dig the hole, put the surface soil to one side and the subsoil on the other so that the richer top soil can be put back directly on the roots when you fill in the hole. Pack the soil in place firmly but not tightly. Water plants thoroughly but do not feed. Instead, give the tree an application of vitamin B12 (available at nurseries) to help it recover from transplanting.

Place the trunk of the fruit tree about 12 to 18 inches from the base of the trellis; you need some soil space between the tree and the wood. Trellises may be against a fence or dividers or on a wall. Young trees need just a sparse pruning. Tie branches to the trellis with tie-ons or nylon string, not too tightly but firmly enough to keep the branch flat against the wood. As the tree grows, do more trimming and tying to establish the espalier pattern you want.

To attach the trellis to a wall use wire or some of the many gadgets available at nurseries specifically for this purpose. For a masonry wall, rawl plugs may be placed in the mortared joints, and screw eyes inserted. You will need a carbide drill to make holes in masonry.

Caring for fruit trees is not difficult. Like all plants, fruit trees need a good soil (already prepared), water, sun, and some protection against insects. When trees are actively growing, start feeding with fruit tree fertilizer (available at nurseries). Use a weak solution; it is always best to give too little rather than too much because excess fertilizer can harm trees.

Observe trees frequently when they are first in the ground because this is the time when trouble, if it starts, will start. If you see leaves that are yellow or wilted, something is awry. Yellow leaves indicate that the soil may not contain enough nutrients. The soil could lack iron, so add some iron chelate to it. Wilted leaves could mean that water is not reaching the roots or insects are at work.

Simone Piette
.

The Best of Roof Gardening

.
This article strives to collect all the vital information on preparing roof gardens and maintaining them.

Life in metros is very busy with lot of hustle and bustle. The people are literally crammed in the cities and the city breathes in lot of pollution. Plants and trees in the courtyard are distant dreams in the city. The city is the garden of cement and concrete and there is no place for trees. But there is always a solution to every problem, what if one cannot have a courtyard and enjoy the cool breeze. One can definitely have a roof garden (terrace garden) where one can sit and relax and enjoy the greenery soothing to eyes. The company of the nature will bring back your ebullience and the tiredness will vanish in the thin air.

You can create your own roof garden which is a type of indoor gardening. But certain things should always be taken into consideration while making it. See to it the roof on which you want to create your garden should be strong enough to carry the weight of the garden. The terrace should be slapdash and the drainage system should be very effective with no leakage of water in the roof garden. If these condition are fulfilled you can choose any of the garden design pattern from the Social Patterns, Natural patterns, Archetypal Patterns or Aesthetic Patterns.

Once the garden design pattern is chosen the work will start with the five primary compositional elements of garden design, it will begin with the planting design, then the landform design, water design and paving design and the design of any other structures if you want to include will be added in the end. A detailed plan is very essential to start with, and execute it in an effective manner. The roof garden should be proportionate with lawns, small trees, ground covers and shrubs. If you want you can include the concept of rock garden or terrace garden or make a structure to provide shade. Choose the Fiber-rooted plants as the roots of the Tap-rooted plants grow through the building and causing damage to it.

Go for the appropriate soil type for your roof gardening. The soil rite or peat moss is best for such type of gardening as it does not exerts pressure on the building. This type of soil is very costly and it is better to use blended with garden earth or manure. For perfect drainage system you will need to do roof garden construction. The construction must be done with burnt bricks as other bricks turn to mud and collapse the drainage system. This can spoil your garden. Place these bricks evenly on the terrace, or corrugated sheets can also be used for the same purpose. Put a net lawn on the top of the bricks, preventing the soil getting into the bricks.

If the garden is more than 500sq.ft then construct drain at various places and put several pipes leading to main hole and properly cover these pipes. Prepare the mixture of soil first and then put into the pot as per the required quantity and then sow the selected indoor plants.

David H Urmann
.

Benefits of Snow Blower

.
There are many advantages to owning snow removal equipment. You can find one that will be perfect to help you clear the driveway quickly next time there is a heavy snowfall. These neat pieces of kit can be a godsend in winter, making short work of removing it that blocks the access to your home and therefore allowing you to stay nice and toasty indoors for longer.

While the city and state administration take care of public roads, the responsibility is all yours when it comes to your property so you may have to brave the arctic weather to clear the footpath to your door and the driveway. This is traditionally the men's job to sort out. A power tool like the thrower can be the difference between hours of punishing, back-breaking physical efforts and getting it all done very quickly.

This removal is an excellent choice in win. It has an easily adjustable chute deflector and power-driven wheels which can disengage independently to assist in turning. When choosing the right blower for your home, consider the size of the area that will be cleared, the time you have to do the task and the amount of fall you normally have each year. You will find many varieties of these mower machines.

These equipments generally come in two styles: one stage or two stages. Two stage machines have one or more low-speed metal augers that break up the ice and movie it into a separate high-speed fan that blows the snow out the discharge chute. These machines are usually self-propelled, either with large wheels equipped with tire chains or, in some case, tracks.

This blower tire chains are important for these large wheels because, without them, they would not be able to force themselves through the snow, much less clear it out of the way. For an average suburban home with a driveway and sidewalk, a single-stage snow thrower is the way to go. They are relatively lightweight and affordable, and are capable of handling up to 8" of snow. Although technically not self-propelled, the auger (shaped like a corkscrew) moves the machine along with it's rotating action as it scoops up snow and throws it through the chute. Single stage snow throwers use a single high-speed impeller to both move the snow into the machine and force it out the discharge chute.

Like other tire chains, blower tire chains are available in a few different styles. They can be purchased in two links or four link spacing. In two link spacing, there is a cross chain every second side chain link. Similarly, four link spacing means that there is a cross chain every fourth side chain link. Two link spacing generally provides for a smoother ride and better traction. As with other tire chains, mower tire chains can be purchased with an optional V-Bar chain in both two link and four link spacing. V-Bar chains are especially recommended for ice use because they provide extra traction for use on hills, ice, and hard packed conditions. However, drivers should not use V-Bar chains on pavement since it can damage the surface.

Are helpful pieces of power equipment if you live anywhere that gets even a few inches of snow in the winter? However, these throwers aren't right for everyone. While they superficially resemble lawn mowers, they are harder to use. On the other hand, they require less exertion than shoveling when used properly and in the right conditions.

Steve Buchanan
.

Categories of plant pests

.
Plant pests can be divided into about three categories: those that suck plant juices, those that eat leaves, and those that bore into wood. In the first category, aphids – or plant lice - rank number one for their destructive capacity. There are 4,000 species, of which 250 have earned most-wanted posters. Aphids are tiny, greenish white to green, sometimes pinkish or brownish depending on their maturity, and often have lacy wings. They are usually found in colonies, and often with ants, which ‘farm’ them the way we raise cows. To get rid of aphids, blend a hot (habanero) pepper in one cup of water and spray the affected plants.

Spider mites are so tiny they look like reddish or greenish powder on leaves and stems, until you look closely and see the powder moving! Watch for them on tomatoes, peppers and roses. The leaves will look burnt. Try mixing 1 tbsp. buttermilk, one cup unbleached flour and four cups of water and spraying it on the plants. If you smoke, soak a pack of cigarettes in a gallon of water, add a few drops of Ivory liquid, and spray. For scale insects, you can buy fish emulsion fertilizer, mix 2 tbsp. in one quart of water, and spray. The above remedies also work on leafhoppers and whiteflies.

The second category - insects that eat leaves - includes caterpillars, leaf miners, leaf beetles and sawflies. Everyone knows what a caterpillar looks like; what everyone doesn’t know is that not all caterpillars turn into butterflies or moths. Some turn into wasps, and wasps, though ugly, are often beneficial to gardens because wasps eat other bugs. Caterpillars infest plants by rolling up in the leaves. These leaf balls resist spray (the caterpillar inside just laughs!). Picking off damaged leaves and disposing of them is time-consuming, but one of the best ways to get rid of the scourge. Skeleton-like leaves are also a caterpillar sign. Leaves with chewed edges are usually leaf miners. Sawflies masquerade as caterpillars, lay eggs, and ravage roses. Sawfly larva have, in addition to real legs, body bumps that look like undeveloped legs. Sawflies have a natural predator, the paper wasp, but because of overuse of insecticides paper wasps are increasingly rare. Try mixing a strong solution of garlic and Ivory soap in a blender (a lot of garlic, two drops of soap) and spraying them.

A third category of garden pest, the wood borers, terrorize trees and woody shrubs like dogwood and rose, leaving holes or snakelike abrasions up the stalk. Unfortunately, cambium miners or leaf miners can leave the same kind of sign. The cane-boring wasp, which damages roses, also eats aphids and is a garden helper. If your pest is truly a wood borer, or cane borer, you can cut the stalk below the hole, seal the stalk with carpenter’s glue, and burn the cut portion to destroy larva or borer. Normally, wood-or-cane borers will not kill a rose, merely disfigure it. Of greater concern is the raspberry cane borer, which can destroy the entire plant down to the root. Again, cutting the cane, sealing it and disposing of the stalk is the best remedy. If there are too many to tend to individual canes, mix sulfur and lime with several drops of vegetable oil and spray.

Bark beetles, like the notorious Dutch Elm bark beetle, can destroy entire geographic regions of trees. However, it is not the beetle that destroys, but the disease spores it carries. I have had some luck wrapping the trunks of young trees with cloth strips soaked in hard cider, but for mature trees, Dursban - a toxic, organophosphate insecticide - applied to the trunks of the trees fully six feet up in early fall is the only known cure. The pine-bark beetle is another scourge, and equally poorly controlled. I have had some success with pyrethrines (natural organic compounds from the Chrysanthemum family) and verbenone, a natural organic terpene from the verbena family.

It is important to remember that chemical insecticides do not discriminate. They kill both harmful and beneficial insects, as well as people, pets, and plants if overused. Newer organic compounds, like pyrethrines, are safer but still somewhat indiscriminate. Even completely natural substances like vinegar can kill both harmful and beneficial insects. Before you use anything, be certain that it is necessary. Sometimes, waiting a season, moving the plants, or creating better growing conditions (appropriate amounts of water, sufficient room for air and light to penetrate, or aerating the soil) can eliminate unwanted garden visitors as effectively as a toxic spray.

Brian Sandifer
.

Fire Resistant Landscaping Could Save Your Home

.
Each year, homes are destroyed by wildfires. If you live in or are planning to move to an area where homes are intermixed with woodlands, your home may be in jeopardy, and your life and the lives of your family may be at risk.

Just as appropriate landscaping can help gardeners with water shortages, so may careful landscaping help reduce the risk of significant property damage in the most fire-prone areas. Home owners can benefit from landscaping that create a semi-fireproof zone around the home.

The first step is creating a series of zones that break the fire chain. The concept behind this landscaping is that while no plant is fireproof, some are more flammable than others. The area around the house is landscaped into four plant zones, with the most flammable vegetation planted farthest from the house. Zone 4, farthest from the house, would consist of vegetation that has been thinned to reduce the amount of fuel that could feed a fire. Zone 3 includes plants selected for their low profile and slow-burning characteristics. Zone 2 features highly fire-retardant plants. It's designed to be a greenbelt zone of maximum fire protection. Zone 1, closest to the residence, is a small area of plants that pose little risk of burning.

Here are some more suggestions on how to make home landscaping more resistant to wildfires.

DO

Keep roof and gutters clean by removing pine needles, leaves and other debris.
Use masonry walls, patios, walkways and pools to create a safety barrier close to structures.
Plant trees and shrubbery far enough apart so that their crowns will not touch when vegetation reaches maturity.
Prune low-growing, deep-rooted ground covers close to structures on hillsides.
Use timers on automatic sprinkler systems for consistent irrigation and water conservation.
Urge neighborhood cooperation to develop area-wide landscaping that inhibits flames from spreading.

DON'T

Allow dead tree limbs or underbrush to accumulate within 30 feet of your home.
Landscape shrubbery and adjacent trees in a "fire ladder" that allows flames to quickly jump from ground level to heights.
Plant highly flammable trees such as eucalyptus, pine and juniper. Avoid flammable shrubbery.
Build narrow archways or passageways, or plant trees in a manner that restricts access for fire-fighting equipment.
Stack wood piles against residence walls.
Water too frequently if a natural area tends to dry out late in the season.

Be aware that standard landscape maintenance also offers some fire safety. Over time, plants grow and spread; mulches dry out; leaves and pine needles pile up. All of these can supply a fire with fuel. Proper preservation adds to your home's appearance and helps defend your home from wildfire.

Using fire resistant plants in your landscaping is part of the overall fire defense plan.
What are fire-resistant plants?
Fire resistant plants are plants that don't readily ignite from a flame or other ignition sources. Although fire-resistant plants can be damaged or even killed by fire, their foliage and stems don't contribute significantly to the fuel and, therefore, the fire's intensity.

Plants that are fire-resistant have the following characteristics:

Leaves are moist and supple.
Plants that have little dead wood and tend not to accumulate dry, dead material within the plant.
Sap is water-like and does not have a strong odor.
Most deciduous trees and shrubs are fire-resistant.
However, it's important to remember that even fire resistant plants can burn, particularly if they are not maintained in a healthy condition.

It is impossible to control the factors that start the wildfires that occur in numerous parts of the world; homeowners can alter their landscaping and thereby increase the odds of their homes and property surviving a fire, while still enjoying the nature's beauty.

M Wakefield
.

Decorative Natural Area Rugs

.
Quality Area rugs are material used to cover specific floor area. The perfect lawn mower for your lawn depends on many things including the size of the lawn and the number of obstacles, such as flower beds, benches, shrubs, greenhouses etc. If you have a large lawn with lots of obstacles and uneven grass, then an easily maneuverable riding lawn mower may be the best mower for your needs. A riding lawn mower that can cope with wet grass, slopes and obstacles and also finely dices the cuttings to provide excellent lawn fertilizer is the just released Husqvarna Rider R155 AWD and it could be just what you need.

One of the most suitable lawn mowers for large, uneven lawns is this new mower from Husqvarna. It is a well built mower that is designed to be very maneuverable, so it is the perfect mower if your lawn has lots of obstacles like flower beds, rockery, paths or trees. The new AWD (all wheel drive) is automatic and loss of traction will force it to engage all of its. When mowing in the rain or on a sloping lawn the Husqvarna Rider handles well.

The rear pair of wheels can swing under the mower, thanks to the exclusive articulated steering system, to also augment the maneuverability. The outcome is superior maneuverability with a 4 inch turning radius at full lock.

The lawn mower has 3 cutting blades and a front mounted deck. Cutting heights can be set between 1-1/2 to 3-1/2 inches. The front mounted cutting deck gives excellent accessibility into corners and under benches and bushes. Very efficient cutting and mulching is achieved by the 3 cutting blades . When the BioChip is in place the grass clipping are chopped up into mulch and allowed to fall onto the ground as fertiliser.

Although the Husqvarna Rider R155 AWD is expensive (the basic model is more than $US9000) it should provide years of excellent service. Slightly cheaper, but without the AWD, is the Husqvarna Rider R155G2. An excellent choice of riding mower that will have your lawn professionaly finished in no time.

Advantages

* Excellent maneuverability

* Easy to operate

* Good design and built for long life

* Excellent mulching ability

Disadvantages

* Costly

* Difficult to mount

* Engine vibrations can be uncomfortable if ridden on for long periods

In Conclusion

The Husqvarna Rider R155 AWD is a well built, very maneuverable mower that makes mowing a large, uneven lawn with obstacles and slopes, extremely easy. The mulching ability is an excellent idea but the high cost will put this mower out of the reach of many gardeners. Due to it's excellent and anticipated long life it may be a good mower to look out for at seconhand sales in the years to come..

janet ashby
.

There Is Enough Reason To Feel Optimistic About Hydroponics

.
When you think about hydroponics, you will certainly feel a sense of optimism about the future of crop and plant cultivation as it bodes well for the times to come because we need some adequate means to maintain growth of plant life on earth in spite of the limitations of space. With the continuing rapid depletion of land, it is indeed heartening to know that there are alternatives available that are helping in removing our concerns as we contemplate life with less land area available for growing plants and foods.

Little Land Left Available

As man moves quickly towards greater industrialization and expansion and land is becoming an increasingly scarcer resource today, what we know about hydroponics should help in containing this new onslaught against the precious resource of land, which in the near future would be reduced only to farmlands if the pace at which we are utilizing land does not slow down. As new condominiums are coming up and even farmland is becoming scarce, we will have less agricultural land left to us.

So, scientists and experts have devised a new method of cultivation that does not need much land, and this is what we understand about hydroponics which is that each and every person on the planet can readily engage in this activity. All that one needs is knowledge as well as equipment and a little bit of spare area in the home and one will be on one's way. Thus, hydroponics means utilizing whatever extra space one has and growing plants and fruits at home may also mean that one won't need to even visit the grocer to stock up for essential foods every day.

What is superb about hydroponics is that there is no difficulty in even picking up the equipment necessary to grow your plants, fruits or herbs and they can be purchased at any local store and certainly over the internet. What's more, you do not have to pay an exorbitant price and there is also nothing much required to use the equipment. With easy instructions that you can follow without a problem, it would soon lead you to a new way of growing plants and maybe even provide freedom from purchasing groceries.

There is not much else you need to know about hydroponics and given the rapidly vanishing land resources, it is indeed a feasible alternative means to grow plants and vegetables as well as fruits and because land cannot be recovered once it has been used up, this is probably the best solution to space restricted gardening. Thus whatever we know about hydroponics is enough to instill a sense of confidence that man has been able to find ways and means to solve the problem of diminishing land resources.

Gregory Hepburn
.

Implements And Their Uses

.
It may seem to the reader that it is all very well to make a garden with a pencil, but that the work of transferring it to the soil must be quite another problem and one entailing so much work that he will leave it to the professional market gardener.

He possibly pictures to himself some bent-kneed and stoop-shouldered man with the hoe, and decides that after all there is too much work in the garden game. What a revelation would be in store for him if he could witness one day's operations in a modern market garden! Very likely indeed not a hoe would be seen during the entire visit. Modern implements, within less than a generation, have revolutionized gardening.

This is true of the small garden as certainly as of the large one: in fact, in proportion I am not sure but that it is more so--because of the second wonderful thing about modern garden tools, that is, the low prices at which they can be bought, considering the enormous percentage of labor saved in ccomplishing results. There is nothing in the way of expense to prevent even the most modest gardener acquiring, during a few years, by the judicious expenditure of but a few dollars annually, a very complete outfit of tools that will handsomely repay their cost.

While some garden tools have been improved and developed out of all resemblance to their original forms, others have changed little in generations, and in probability will remain ever with us. There is a thing or two to say about even the simplest of them, however,--especially to anyone not familiar with their uses.

There are tools for use in every phase of horticultural operations; for preparing the ground, for planting the seed, for cultivation, for protecting crops from insects and disease, and for harvesting.

First of all comes the ancient and honorable spade, which, for small garden plots, borders, beds, etc., must still be relied upon for the initial operation in gardening--breaking up the soil. There are several types, but any will answer the purpose.

In buying a spade look out for two things: see that it is well strapped up the handle in front and back, and that it hangs well. In spading up ground, especially soil that is turfy or hard, the work may be made easier by taking a strip not quite twice as wide as the spade, and making diagonal cuts so that one vertical edge of the spade at each thrust cuts clean out to where the soil has already been dug.

The wide-tined spading-fork is frequently used instead of the spade, as it is lighter and can be more advantageously used to break up lumps and level off surfaces. In most soils it will do this work as well, if not better, than the spade and has the further good quality of being serviceable as a fork too, thus combining two tools in one. It should be more generally known and used.

With the ordinary fork, used for handling manure and gathering up trash, weeds, etc., every gardener is familiar. The type with oval, slightly up-curved tines, five or six in number, and a D handle, is the most convenient and comfortable for garden use.

Godfrey Philander
.

Tips On Senior Care& Their Changing Needs

.
It is a simple fact of life and can be hard to face that we all get Old. What are the differences exactly, or the risks involved with getting a used stair lift?

For starters, every stair lift that is made, has a track that is custom built for a specific stair case. So unless your stair case is the same as what the used stair lifts track was cut for, it will not be a good fit. However, it is possible to cut the track if your stair case is shorter than the stair lift track you are looking at but the tracks cannot be lengthened.

Another big issue with getting a used stair lift, is that you do not get the warranty that you would on a new stair lift. You may get a much shorter warranty, or you may get no warranty at all on used stair lifts. With the full factory warranty you are protecting your investment, giving yourself much more peace of mind and if something does go wrong within your warranty period, you’re covered. You won’t have to pay extra for someone to come out and fix the stair lift.

There is also the issue of price. Any used stair lift will have a lower price than a new one, however, is the difference that significant? It also depends on the brand, you might be able to get a used stair lift of one brand for the price of a new one of a different brand.

Lets say we are looking at the same brand of stair lifts, one used, one new. The used will be priced lower, but probably only two hundred dollars or so lower. What are you truly getting? You are getting a slightly lower priced stair lift that is used, short to no warranty and no guarantee if they have a track that will fit your stair case.

If you are in need of a stair lift, then most likely you want something that will just work, correctly and reliably, and not worry about it. For the price and warranty difference, I would say your best bet is to get a new stair lift instead of a used one.

Arthor Pens
.

How to Select a Home Health Agency

.
Our nation is getting older. There's no question about it. As we age many people are caught in what has been referred to as the "sandwich generation". That means they are, at the same time, responsible for caring for aging parents in addition to their own young children. Literally they are "sandwiched" between these two generations and responsibilities. Those who find themselves in this situation will likely be making some significant health care decisions for their parents.

If you're in this potentially tense and uncomfortable spot, first, you'll want to be certain to consider a qualified home health agency for your loved one rather than a nursing home or care center. It's well known that, with regular professional care, patients will typically do better in their own homes whenever it's possible to treat them in that environment.

Services offered by home health agencies can vary. Some offer a broad range of services from basic assistance with routine tasks such as bathing, cooking or simple housework, to round the clock continuous nursing care or hospice services. It is important to consider what future needs might arise and select a home health agency that will be able to meet those needs.

As time passes, your family member may become more incapacitated and require additional services. It is essential to select an agency which has the capability to continue to provide services so your family member won't have the additional stress of transferring to a care center or learning to accept new care providers.

Family Home Care & Hospice (FHC) headquartered in Spokane, WA is an excellent example of the type of home health agency that can provide the breadth of services needed to accommodate the patient's increasing needs.

"We have structured our services to be able to offer patients continuing care in their homes as long as medically possible," explained FHC President, Michael Nowling. "All signs point to outcomes which are better for the patient and for the family if medical care can be effectively delivered in the home as long as is medically practical."

Medicare keeps records on home health agencies and has recently recognized Nowling and FHC as one of the top one percent of home health agencies in the state of Washington and also among the top three percent of home health agencies in the nation. The recognition, which is based on monitoring of patient outcomes, lends credence to Nowling's commitment to providing the types of services which will keep patients at home as long as possible. The Medicare database is available online at http://www.medicare.gov/HHCompare/home.asp. Visiting the site will allow you to compare patient outcome statistics of any qualified home health agency you may be evaluating.

Most home health agencies have a standard schedule of services, but it is also important for you to ask about any specialized services the agency may provide. You may never need any of these more rare specialties, but in the even you do, you will have the confidence of knowing they are available through your current provider. Types of services in this category may include enteral therapy, wound care specialists or primary care medical services. Be certain to ask your home health agency if these or other specialized services are provided.

A constant battle in any home health agency is recruiting and maintaining qualified personnel. It is critical for you to explore the home health agency's policies for background checks and on-going employee education and training.

"We often remark that it's really hard to get a job here," noted Nowling, "but we think that's the way it should be. FHC is a wonderful organization particularly because of how selective we are in the people we hire. Our hiring practices result in a staff of people who are committed to excellence and high standards of professional conduct. They work hard for our patients and they tend to stay with us for a long time. This is great news for our patients and their families because this results in consistently better outcomes. It's one of the reasons we are rated so highly by Medicare."

Just as important as a home health agency's ability to find and maintain a qualified staff is their commitment to keeping that staff trained and educated in the state of the art techniques and therapies. Ask about their training and continuing education programs.

"There is so much specialized and highly technical medical equipment
which can now be used in a home environment," continued Nowling. "We think it's an important priority of a good home heath agency to make sure that our professional staff are always up to date with the latest advances in care."

It goes without saying that insurance coverage is a critical consideration in your home health agency selection process. Most agencies accept Medicaid, Medicare and private insurance, but it is always best to ask specific questions not only of your potential home health agency, but also of your insurance company. Combing through the legalese of your insurance policy may not always get your question answered. It is often better to simply ask a customer service representative at your insurance carrier.

Just in case you haven't been making notes, here's a checklist:

Put a qualified home health agency on your list of alternatives

Find out what is on their list of standard services

Determine the extent of their specialized services

Visit the Medicare website to check out and compare your selections: http://www.medicare.gov/HHCompare/home.asp

Find out the details of their employee screening and hiring practices

Ask about their staff training programs

Find out if insurance will cover home health, and if your agency will accept your insurance

Whether your part of the "sandwich generation" or not, considering home health as part of your health care choice is just good judgment. Be certain that home health agencies are represented in your evaluation process. Your parent or family member will thank you.

Craig Mecham
.

Essential Supplements For Seniors

.
When the body starts to age The human body goes through many changes and After the age of 50 our bones & muscles get weaker and we become activity less efficient at processing and using the available nutrients which slows down our ability to respond to a physical. seniors are far more prone to illnesses as they age.
