This Saturday, November 7th, is a great day for homebrewers! Its the AHA sponsored “Teach a Friend to Homebrew” or “The Big Brew Day” where homebrewers teach those who desire to learn the art of homebrewing. So, get all of your friends together, show them all about Homebrew School, and start brewing this Saturday!

Since its getting close to the winter days, I think some great beers to brew for this weekend include Stouts, Nut Brown Ales, or even a nice, dark Strong Scottish Ale. A rich, robust, and flavorful dark brew is perfect for this time of year. It seems to warm the belly and soul.

So, tell your friends, start networking, and teach the less fortunate the benefits of making and drinking your own creation! Get special access to Homebrew School through the “Teach a Friend to Homebrew” free access link below.

It’s true! Making beer in your backyard is super easy, and a great excuse to be outside on a beautiful day. It’s one of my favorite things to do, and if you can afford beer brewing equipment, you too can enjoy the day and make a delicious beer.

Here is a list of equipment that can turn your backyard turn into a small brewery.

-Outdoor Propane Burner (Be sure to elevate it. I use bricks.)

-Propane Tank

-A Half Barrel Beer Kettle OR a 7.5 gallon stainless steel turkey fryer pot. There are plenty of large pots out there, but be sure to use stainless steel or copper.

-Fermentation Vessel; Bucket or Glass Carboy

-Thermometer

-Hydrometer

-Large Spoon

-Strainer

-Wort Chiller (One of my favorites!)

-Lighter

-Ingredients

I prefer to brew outside for several reasons. Some people don’t like the smell, clean up is easy with a hose, and I just love being outside for whatever reason. Brewing beer outside gives me that excuse . However, there are some things that you need to consider when brewing outside.

-Check the weather. Make sure its a day you know its not going to rain.

-Other people mowing there lawn. Dust and dirt could make its way toward your brew.

-Creatures of nature. Who knows what could fly into your wort.

-The hot sun. Be sure to apply sunscreen.

Whether you just started homebrewing, or you’ve been brewing for awhile, but never outside, making beer in your backyard is a great way to enjoy nature. Invite some friends, teach them a thing or two about brewing beer, and make a delicious batch of beer with the comfort of the sun. Cheers!

Hi,

Thanks for visiting this page. Here you can find out 3 HUGE ways you can help spread the word about Homebrew School. As you may know, brewing your own beer is an awesome hobby, rewarding you with copious amounts of delicious beer. You can brew all the styles of beer in the world right from your own home.

My favorite way you can help is to post this piece of html somewhere on your site:

How to Brew Beer

Next, you could tweet about our site. Include @homebrewschool in the tweet if you can remember!

Lastly, posting to your Facebook profile would be fantastic.

Oh wait, one more: a simple email to a friend might do the trick…just send them the website link and let them know they can learn how to brew beer at home there!

Thanks so much for all of your support now and in the future!

Kindly,

After waiting for this beer to ferment, today was the day to taste and rack. I brewed using my three-tiered system, and came up with this delicious Belgian Wit. After calculating my ABV, it looks like I have a solid 4.7 brew. This beer offered a citrusy aroma and flavor balanced with a subtle bitterness. It went down smooth and crisp, and will be a refreshing homebrew.

Now, are you wondering how to brew all-grain? Homebrew School is currently working on our All Star brewing course, and we hope to have it up soon. Below are some pictures of all grain brewing brought to you by Anbrew. It is a small portion of what is to come at Homebrew School. Cheers!

Wednesday, July 22, 2009, and I’m finally brewing. It’s been awhile since I’ve brewed, but I managed to find some hours, and money, to brew a Belgian Wit.

Nothing beats a Belgian Wit in the summertime, especially in the East Coast when summer seems to extend into fall. I decided to change my recipe from last time. I used the same malts, but I added a couple more pound to make it a little more hefty in alcohol. I’m also using some clear candi sugar to put another punch in the brew. I’m hoping for an OG of 1.060 or better. We shall see how my efficiency turns out.

If you are unfamilar with all grain brewing, this is just a sample of what is to come at Homebrew School. Our intentions is to create an All Star brewing course, where variations of all grain brewing is exposed. We hope that a multimedia documentary of all grain brewing will benefit aspiring homebrewers.

If you are interested, sign up for a courses, and stay tuned for the All Star documentaries coming soon. Cheers!

Now that you’ve made your beer or bought a nice local craft brew, its time to consider what to look for in a beer. Beer has a way to tantalize the taste buds. The first things I should mention that beer seems to be the best when you accomplish something. After a long day at work, nothing beats a refreshing homebrew or microbrew. But instead of gulping it down, lets take the time to analyze and taste your beer. We need to look at the color, the aroma, and how it manipulates your tongue and taste buds.

First thing that needs to be done first is the pour. The pour is a crucial part in drinking beer, because this is when beer reaches its finest and fullest potential. Plus, pouring beer into a glass provides the delightful and playful carbonation that tickles your palate.

Analyze your beer. Look at the color and clarity and see if it meets your standards.

Smelling the fragrance of the brew activates your senses, and you may start to drool. Control yourself. Taking a good sniff of your beer prepares your for the various flavors you’ll get. It is best to take a good whiff, then breathe in and smell again.

Swish your beer around in your glass to bring out the strong aromas.

Now the important part. Take a good sip of your beer. Have the beer settle in your mouth for a moment, and let your tongue and taste buds go to work. You’ll find that bitterness will hit the back of the tongue, while sweetness hits the tip of the tongue. Saltiness and sourness hits the side of the tongue. Swoosh around and try to notice where the beer is most prominent on your tongue. Then, swallow your beer and look for any aftertastes.

Evaluate the beer. Look for bitterness and sweetness. Can you find any off flavors? This is your opportunity to philosophize about your beer and figure out if this beer fits your personality. It may not be a bad idea to write down some notes about the beer either. Taking the time to taste beer will expand your palate, quench your thirst, and give you the knowledge to compare beers. But more importantly, it allows you to figure out what you like and don’t like. Cheers!

It all started as a nice Christmas gift of hop rhizomes. Rhizomes are the root system you plant that grow the hop vine, which then bloom into the flower to pick for brewing. There are some great websites that sell rhizomes, and provide a nice description of the climate that is best suitable for hop growth. I chose Mt. Hood, Cascade, Chinook, Perle, and Hallertau. I wasn’t sure how successful I’d be, but I was hoping I could get all five growing. I ordered my hops in the spring, and waited for the perfect day to plant. In early June, the planting and growing began. I found five spots in my backyard, and dug foot and a half holes. I took the tip of the rhizome and soaked it in a root stimulant. Then, I placed some Miracle Grow soil with good nutrients in the hole, placed the hop vertically, and covered up with remaining Miracle Grow. Once the holes were covered, I mulched throughout. It is important to keep the soil moist, but not to overwater.

So the waiting game began. I checked everyday, and I began to worry. There were no hops. But then the day came. Two vines emerged from the soil, and I was successful growing hops. The realization came that I was two for five with my hops, but hope is not lost. I can always plant next year, and then have enough hops to create a surplus. My Mt. Hood and Cascade live to see another day, and I can’t wait to try again next year.

I’m all about saving money and DIY projects, and hop growing is a simple way to have complete control over your homebrewing experience. Hops are aesthetically pleasing, and a great landscape addition. Consider growing hops yourself, because I know if I can do it, anyone can grow hops. Cheers!
