QuakeLive Custom HUD Install Guide

So, you want to use a custom HUD in QuakeLive and aren’t sure how? This is an easy to follow guide on how to get and install a custom HUD. Finding and using a custom HUD in QuakeLive is simple!

I originally wrote a HUD install guide almost 2 years ago during QuakeLive’s closed beta stage, but it wasn’t great and is a bit out dated now.

First, you need to choose which custom HUD you want to use. There is a pretty vast resource at Custom HUDs for Quake Live, with 342 HUDs so far. Here is a link to my author page on there. Browse through there and find something you like.

Once you’ve found and downloaded the zip of your custom HUD, extract it. There should be at least 2 files, hudname.cfg and hudname.menu (although some have more than one .menu).

Go to your QuakeLive folder. If you’re not sure where that is, open Start, then Run, and paste in the location:

Windows Vista/7: %userprofile%\AppData\LocalLow\id Software\quakelive\home\baseq3
Windows XP: %appdata%\id Software\quakelive\home\baseq3
GNU/Linux: ~/.quakelive/quakelive/home/baseq3

You need to make a new folder called ui in \home\baseq3\, and put these files (hudname.cfg and hudname.menu) inside. You should have something similar to below.

homeaseq3 folder. Make a folder called 'ui'.

Your new ui folder, with custom HUD files inside.

Now all you need to do is load the custom HUD. If you use an autoexec.cfg, you can add the following line to it:

cg_hudFiles “ui/hudname.cfg”

The HUD should be loaded next time you start your game. Or if you are in-game, you can do the same followed by ;loadhud to load the HUD, like below.

Congratulations, you should now have the custom HUD in-game!

Help, my HUD isn’t working! Troubleshooting:

If all you get is the default HUD loading again, something has gone wrong. This usually happens due to one of the following reasons:

You have actually put your HUD files in the wrong place, or didn’t put the correct location in the cg_hudFiles cvar. Make sure they are in quakelive\home\baseq3\ui\ (\home\baseq3\ is where qzconfig.cfg is), and not in quakelive\baseq3\ (where the map .pk3s are).
Make sure the cg_hudFiles cvar has “ui/hudname.cfg” and not just “hudname.cfg”.
If you renamed the hudname.menu file, you will need to edit hudname.cfg to reflect this, else it is looking for a file which doesn’t exist. Open hudname.cfg (Notepad will do fine) and edit the loadMenu line where your custom .menu is loaded to reflect the new name.

Make sure the .menu name is correct.

For a good week now, Quake Live has matured out of its beta state!

What does this mean for you, the player?
Lots of things, because now you can choose to play as you were, free of charge, on everything you had so far, or subscribe to a Premium or Pro account and get more out of this amazing game!

Standard

Everything you had before during the beta:

the regular map pool,
the regular game modes (ffa, duel, ctf, tdm, ca, insta),
the models,
practice against bots (note: also on the Premium maps!
Statistics for the last 28 days
Join up to 1 clan
Forum customer support

Premium

The Premium is all of the above and of course some new features:

Full customer support
Access new maps online (note: as said, standard players can load these premium maps when playing against bots)
Freeze Tag game mode
Regular content updates
Join or create a clan (up to 5)
Statistics for 6 months
No pre-game advertisements
And some minor things like extra awards and bypass a site queue

Pro

The Pro account is all of the above with some minor differences:

Join or create up to 10 clans
Statistics are kept for 1 year

And 2 important features:

Start your own server!
Invite up to 3 Standard level players to join your server with the premium content

Now what do these fancy feature cost?
Not that much:

the Premium account costs $1.99 per month (note: billed annualy!) for the things mentioned above!
the Pro account costs $3.99 per month (also billed annualy!) for the above + having access to spawning your own servers!

Cool stuff, and not too costly for new and revived content from during the Quake 3 era! And with more things to come, a Premium account sure looks the best bet, unless you want to be able to spawn servers.

However, this post is not a promotional message to urge you all to buy the game, but perhaps you can be entertained by some guides to why you would consider buying a Premium or Pro subscription.

Esportsheaven Sapphire Euro Challenge

Sometimes very early announcements go lost in space, together with all the other news that you’ve read but already forgot about a week later. And that’s a shame! So 6 to 5 days prior to the ESH Sapphire Euro Challenge, I think it’s a good time to post about the upcoming qualifier rounds and the conclusion of this competition!

Four qualification rounds, each Saturday, starting with the 7th of August, and a final playoff round that will go down on September 11th (hmm déjà vu :p) Anyway, format of this first qualifier round – and probably the same for the next 3 – is a single elimination, best-of-1 with the quarter finals and up being best-of-3. There’s room for 128 players who can choose from ztntourney1, qztourney4, qzdm13, qztourney7 and qztourney9 to play their game on.

So first round, next Saturday the 7th, starting at 14:00 CET (check-in from 20 minutes prior) so sign up and participate to the fun on #esh.ql!

And remember kids, there’s £ 500 to be won! Good luck!

QuakeCon 2010 Tournaments!

Dallas, Texas! The place to be for one of the world’s most known LAN parties ever: QuakeCon! Held August 12-15 at the Hilton Anatole! But this post is not about the accomodations regarding QuakeCon, it’s about the tournaments that will be played there!

QuakeCon 2010 will feature 3 tournaments:

The Intel QUAKE LIVE Masters Championship will feature a 64 of the world’s best players in a double-elimination best-of-3 match system which concludes in a best-of-5 final. Prize stash consists of over $25000 and the gold spot goes home with no less than $14000! Impressive!

But that’s just one, as a second tournament there will be The QUAKE LIVE Capture the Flag Championship and yes you read that right: Capture the flag. It’s awesome that at such an event, CTF will be present as a tournament on such a great event as QuakeCon!
Again over $25000 (of which $14000 to the winning team) in a single-elimination best-of-3 match system.

And to conclude, there’s The QUAKE LIVE Open Tournament available to any who show up to claim $1500 for first spot. A very nice prize for a free-to-all Duel competition in a single-elimination best-of-3 system.

Pre-registration for the Masters and CTF tournaments is available on http://www.quakecon.org/tournament which is also the source for rules and terms of the events. The Open Tournament is on a first-come-first-served basis, so be on time!

iCTF 4vs4 ladder!

A while ago, people asked me to promote a subscene of QuakeLive, namely iCTF. Now, I can hear you all say: “bah who needs ictf when you got ctf and tdm and duel!”

Well, some do, and so the irc channel #qlictf was formed, where instagibbers all around (mainly EU based) are able to chill out, play a pickup game of iCTF or just chat about what they like:

But these guys want more, they want to bring iCTF on the competitive map! And so a 4vs4 iCTF ladder was born, hosted by FraggedNation. This ladder is a point-based system, played on any regular-size ctf and ta-ctf map, where any team can join and advance in points by being victorious over other clans. What more do you want, right?

So if you feel like playing a round of iCTF, join the pickup on irc. If you and some friends want even more, form a team, and sign up for this ladder! Fun guaranteed!

ENC 2010 Playoffs

Now that the groupstage is over, from the 12 original teams, only 6 remain to battle it out in the small but intense playoff tree.

Starting with the Quarter Finals tomorrow evening – according to the schedule – between the Netherlands and the UK on one hand, and on the other hand we see another classic (remember Clanbase and QQC’s grand finals in their respective nation cups?) of France vs Poland.

Wednesday the 7th of July at 22:00 CET we will broadcast both games on our TV channelpage

Teams that go through to the semi finals will meet up with Russia (for NL or UK) and Sweden (for FR or PL) as both these teams were top of the groupstage result table.

ENC 2010 Playoffs

Fnatic BEAT IT Qualifiers #1 and #2

When Fnatic Play announced their BEAT IT competition, 4 qualifiers were supposed to happen at some future date.
The dates were unconfirmed apparently as it’s July 2010 and tonight the first qualifier takes place, with the 2nd tomorrow!

Qualifier #1 and #2 will be a Single Elimination, Bo1 system with Bo3 in the finals. The top 4 will be qualified to play in the invite-tournament where 16 yet to be determined players are pre-invited.
Interesting stuff as there’s already a prize for just being 1st and 2nd place in each qualifier, which is very nice:

1st: qualified + $175
2nd: qualified + $75
3rd and 4th: qualified

House of Quake CA 2v2 and Duel last rounds!

About 4 months ago, the House of Quake leagues started and their most prominent gametype was Clan Arena in a 2vs2 and 3vs3 setup! But a duel competition also was available for those who fancy 1v1 mano-a-mano action!

3vs3 Clan Arena
Whoops, no last rounds there as they just entered the playoff stage! Awesome stuff going on in 3 on 3 CA action. Follow it all on the CA 3on3 page!

But on to more urgent matters:

2vs2 Clan Arena
Now Thursday the 8th of July, both semi finals will be played in this 2 on 2 CA league. At 20:00 CET, meK^ will take on PBJ and later at 21:00 skzi will face +fwd. After both semis, the final will be played (estimated to be around 22:00 CET)
Both semis are Bo3 and the main final will be a Bo5.

A 2nd season has been announced already for which you can sign up!

Duel
With just a few more games to go, the semi finals are creeping upon us. Nonetheless, for duel as well, the 2nd season has been announced and is open for registration, so sign up while you can!

The Electronic Sports World Championships of 2010 have come to an end, and while many games were played, we of course only focus on Quake Live, as the 14 contestants – some couldn’t make it, were replaced, … – had to battle it out in order to have a chance to take away a nice pot of gold!

Group stage: part 1

Group #1 saw rapha, CAREEM, noctis and k1llsen, but CAREEM didn’t make it to DisneyLand Paris, so it’s down to the North American favourite to show what he’s got against noctis and k1llsen. Two sound victories there leave it up to the Europeans to claim 2nd place. A tense 3-mapper sees noctis claim the spot over k1llsen.

Group #2 lists Sl1p, Cooller, strenx and bodzo. Cooller being the favourite here, does what he does and claims 3 wins in 2:0 games. strenx follows along with two 2:0 games and bodzo claims his game against Sl1p in a 2:1 match.

Group #3: stermy, Cypher, l1nkje and GaRpY. Another full European group which sees highseeder Cypher secure his 3 wins, stermy going to next round with 2 wins and GaRpY winning the consolation game of this group against l1nkje.

Group #4 features only 3 players, but another North American contestant: DaHang to hold his own against the likes of av3k and fazz. fazz being the underdog in this group, manages to steal 1 map from DaHang but sees the other 2 maps go to DaHang, who finishes 2nd in this group as av3k beats both players with a 2:0 victory.

Group stage: part 2

Stakes go up as the brackets narrow down to just 8 players divided in 2 groups!

The remaining 4 players for Group A in part 2 are: rapha, stermy, av3k and strenx. rapha slips up against stermy but gets a hold of himself in his games against strenx and av3k, be it not too solid, but it does see him go to next round. strenx unfortunately is eliminated during this round as he lost all 3 maps, but not without a good fight versus both av3k and stermy. Out of the latter 2, only 1 can join rapha in the playoffs and it is av3k who beats stermy, securing 1st spot over rapha in this group.

Group B puts Cypher, Cooller, DaHang and noctis in the pit. noctis is pinned against the wall with only 1 map win against Cypher, who does manage to beat Cooller, but loses to DaHang. Cooller in turn wins against DaHang and DaHang beats Cypher. With noctis eliminated, this puts all 3 of them on equal terms in map wins, but it is the for-against scores of the games in between these 3 players that sees DaHang lead this group and Cooller taking 2nd place.

Playoffs

av3k and rapha join up with DaHang and Cooller in the Semi Finals, but it happens so that the Europeans and North Americans are pitched against each other, which leaves a final that is intercontinental!

It’s only Best of 3 – kind of a weird decision in such a large scale money-supported tournament – but it’s av3k outplaying Cooller on ztntourney1 and qzdm13 that sees av3k secure his spot in the final, and on the other end of the Atlantic Ocean – figuratively then as it’s all happening in DisneyLand Paris – that rapha wins from DaHang in a 2:0 win as well.

3rd place goes to Cooller as in this consolation (hardly with the money attached to the bronze position) match it takes again just 2 mapwins to secure the $2000 for Cooller against DaHang.

But the main event is the Grand Final between rapha and av3k, and it promises to be a good game with rapha needing all his skill to keep av3k at bay in a 7:2 on qzdm13 and a close 6-5 on qztourney7, as such only needing 2 maps which rewards the gold player rapha with $8000 and silver spot av3k with $4000.
