I decided I needed a break from painting landscapes, and eggs have always been a challenge for me and it was time I really challenged myself. When painting eggs, there is not much room for error. If not painted correctly, they won't look like eggs, but like blobs. Landscapes are much easier; who's to know that rock was moved? or that mountain...&lt;br/&gt;

Here we are, on one of the dirt roads leading down to the Missouri River south of St. Louis. The soil here is generally clay, dusty on the surface and hard as rock underneath, and often with a reddish tint.  This scene is typical of a  summer day, possibly August, when it is hot and humid and the air sings with...&lt;br/&gt;

There are so many wonderful trails in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains near Albuquerque. They start at an altitude of approximately 6500 feet and some go to the top of Sandia Peak at approximately 10,700 feet . That's a hike that takes the better part of a day if you are in top physical condition....&lt;br/&gt;

Jemez Springs is about an hour from home, in the Jemez Mountains. The  drive to reach it is wonderful; part of it is through the Jemez Pueblo where there is a very nice visitors' center and museum, and across the roads the residents set up booths selling food and hand made native crafts. A week or so ago I went down to the Rio Grande Nature Preserve State Park to take some photos of the bosque (cottonwood forest) turning into brilliant fall colors. The weather was perfect: blue skies, light breeze, 70º.

A while back we drove to Jemez Springs, a charming little town in the mountains. On the way we passed through the Jemez Pueblo and stopped at their visitors' center. They not only have information available about the Pueblo, but also a lot of pottery, especially the "storyteller" figures.

When driving west on I-40 from Oklahoma City to Amarillo, the first rest stop in Texas is at Palo Duro Canyon. It's worth a stop because the scenery is awesome and you can see for miles. They have a wonderful display inside with the history of the area and information on the canyon which is second in size to the Grand Canyon....&lt;br/&gt;

Amazing storms blow in, usually in the late afternoon, and for a little while drop rain here and there. It's nice and cooling, and not at all scary like Midwest storms that are sometimes so fierce that they literally destroy parts of cities and towns. Finally, though, we are unpacked and I'm able to get back to painting.

Here are a couple of quick sketches -- the top one of desert rocks is a pastel about 6-1/2 x 7-1/2 inches on LaCarte card, and it took about 53 minutes to complete.

The painting measures approximately 12 x 18 1/2" and is being matted in dark blue to complement the blue in the painting, with a gold fillet between the mat and the painting. The frame will complement the whole.
