HMWL: What does your music plan for the next 6 months look like? Any major releases / festival plans?

I’ve got my first official remix in the works, and I have some cool new tracks I’m planning on giving away very soon – keep an eye out on my soundcloud for those. Other than that, i’ll just be enjoying the summer, playing any gigs that come my way, and plugging away at production

HMWL: What is the scene like in the music city of Bristol? What local producers and DJs might break big in the future?

Apart from our biggest exports like Eats Everything and Bashmore, there are planty of up-and-coming producers such as Admin, Crump, Outboxx, and Billy Disney who are all doing cool things now.

HMWL Podcast is here again, this month a tiny bit late. But hey, since the spring is here it’s hard to stay indoors browsing our never-ending stream of new promos. The mix contains recent and future releases from labels like Cadenza, Drevkollektivet, Fukai, Culprit La, WMWL, Off Recordings and Kling Klong.
1. Sasch – Hearts & Minds (Mario Aureo Remix) [Steyoyoke May 13th]
Out on 12″ on Steyoyoke Records on May 13th. Digital May 27th. Mario Aureo remix is our top pick from the labels forthcoming 11th release. Deep, harmonic and warm. Perfect show-starter.

2. Edu Imbernon & Los Suruba – Fayer (Adriatique‘ Deeper Vibe Remix) [Culprit LA April 20th]
Out April 20th on our favorite Culprit. Adriatique techy yet deep mix is on heavy rotation at ours right now.

3. Djuma Soundsystem & Lazarusman – Dont Stop (Klanguestler) – [Fukai May 6th]
Oslo born, Copenhagen based Djuma Soundsystem teams up with South African poet Lazarus once again. This time for Fukai – Great Stuff’s sub label.

4. Dash Dot – Booty Clap [Off Recordings April 30th]
Is house the new hip hop, is hip hop the new house. Is it all about money and hoes. Don’t mind the lyrics as Off Recordings bring us another quality release.

5. Walker & Royce, Pow! Pow! – Poindexter [Resonance Records May]
The most fresh-sounding and forward thinking house track of this month. We never heard about Resonance records until now but definitely love what we hear.

6. Deetron feat Ovalsoul7- out of my head! (Kink Vocal mix) [Music Man April 29th]
Deetron major vocal anthem on Music Man Records. Kink remix represents.

7 Ninetoes – Finder [Kling Klong April 18]
This will be this year’s most played summer track. For better or worse.

8. Dale Howard – Alpha [No More Noise Records 6th may]
Excelent debut by No More Noise. Dale Howard delivers a two track monster to the Sheffield base newly started record label.

9. Andreas Foxx – Pragmatic love [Drevkollektivet - Soon]
Another Swedish veteran DJ and Secret Island Nation’ resident readies a 4 track EP for Fred Whites Drevkollektivet label.

10. Uner – La Playa [Cadenza May 13]
Cadenza may be based in Geneva, but is probably mostly associated with Ibiza, Vagabundos, beach and latin sounds. Uner prepares the labels release number 86. La playa is totally hypnotic.

11. Walker & Royce, Pow! Pow! – Drive [Resonance Records May]
Another masterpiece from Resonance Records.

12. Özgur Can – Force [WMWL001 - June]
A sneak peak at the green WMWL001 vinyl everybody is talking about.

Swedish deep techno hero – Martin Brodin is about to release a new album. Which sounds surprisingly fresh and disco? We made sure to grab an exclusive podcast and chit chat a bit with Martin about techno, nu-disco, the past and the future.

HMWL: Tell us a bit about Martin Brodin. When did you buy your first record? How long have you been part of music industry? Since how long do you consider yourself being a producer and a label boss?

Martin Brodin: I must have been around 11 or 12 years old when I bought my first record. If I’m not too wrong, it was the single Just Can’t Get Enough with Depeche Mode. And what a moment it was. It brings back a lot of memories. And looking back, who could imagine me being where I’m today, in the music industry myself. My career, if we should call it that, started back in 1996 when I started my record store, Yell Records. To keep a long story short, the store led me into the record label sides of things. In 2000 I started my first label Yellhouse Records. Not long after in 2001, Deeplay Music was born. Deeplay opened a lot of doors and has been the backbone for me ever since. After 5 years of pushing and releasing other artists, I felt it was the time to try out production myself. Said and done, my first single, Semitone Shuffle came out 2005 on my sublabel Deeplay Soultec.

HMWL: Your most known and successful releases during the last five years can be described as deep techno with an occasional psycadelic touch. We’re talking Galaxis (Remixed by Tony Senghore), Siberian Transit (Remixed by Pig & Dan), Semitone Shuffle (Remixed by Guy Gerber) and From Malmoe to Bremen (Remixed by Sasse). The BlaBlaBla album on other hand is described by yourself as a Modern Disco Classic. What fueled this transition from classic techno to a more modern disco approach?

Martin Brodin: No one could really see it coming and it may come as a surprise to many. However, my passion for Disco Music is a long loving affair. Ever since I really got into it, I couldn’t stop buying all records I could find at flea markets and second hand shops. One could say I was, and still is, a Disco aficionado. And the transition you refer to, started around 3 years ago when I by accident found a lot of rare and obscure Disco records in my collection, which haven’t played for many many years. I put a record on the turntables and couldn’t stop listening. I think I spent the whole weekend listening and embracing the great feeling of those records. I got such a kick out of it and the music wouldn’t leave my mind. So what wouldn’t be better than starting a record label influenced by those classics. MB Disco was born half a year later. With all that said, I still listen and play both Deep House and Tech House and similar stuff.

HMWL: How does 2013 sound in your head? What artists should we look out for? What is fresh and interesting? Which genres and sounds are no longer evolving or interesting?

Martin Brodin: Some of these questions are really hard to answer to. Let’s start with the easiest one. A few ones to look out for, are Jarle Bråthen from Norway and Pleasure Machines from Belgium, both very talented. And I have had the pleasure to work with both of them.
Fresh and interesting is the artists/producers who dares to go into new directions and explore the unknown. It takes a lot of guts to do this, and I respect the ones who do it. Which genres that are no longer evolving, haha, I’m not sure I can point it out. And it’s also a bit dangerous to generalize whole genres, because I still believe that in every genre there are cool and interesting things going on. I think every genre has its phases where it’s more or less evolving.

And what’s going on my head in 2013? Well, a lot of ideas for my follow up album. I’m trying to figure out how it should sound like. And there’s a lot of planning for MB Disco as well that needs to be handled. So it’s a mix of crazy creativity and strict planning. But it’s as usual I would say.

HMWL: Your are considered as one of the young talented nu-disco / deep house crusaders of Copenhagen. With remixes for Tomas Barfod and such your sound has many times been compared to Danny Daze, Doctor Dru and The Mekanism. Tell us more about Lou Van?

Lou Van:
Well… My name is Ludvig and i’m a 24 year old guy who’s been living of dj’ing in Copenhagen for the last 5 years of my life. About two years ago i started getting in to producing my own stuff, and has been fooling around with Ableton Live ever since. It was a quite natural step for me, starting to produce. Not that i got tired of dj’ing, i love dj’ing – i was just missing that creative edge and in depth feeling you get when you sit with a piece of music.

I just recently set up a studio room, so now is the time to SERIOUSLY produce and try to do something with my music. At the moment I’m really in a phase of finding my sound in producing, which i consider being the toughest thing of it all. But hey, being compared to names such as the mentioned, well that’s just awesome!

HMWL:What is the sound of summer 2013 an onwards in your personal opinion. What will be hip? what will be overrated? What type of tracks will we hear the most at this summer’s festivals and outdoor parties?

Lou Van: In the more popular end, I would definitely say that the things Karmon is doing at the moment is hitting the right spot. His happy but still sometimes melancholic sounds and beats really are pressing people out on the dance floor. I always get in a good mood listening to Karmon, and i love his sound – and even the fact that it sometimes sounds to ‘perfect’ and ‘overproduced’. Well crafted music right there.

In the more deep-end i would bet that Finnebassen will tear the summer dancefloors up again, along with guys like Adana Twins with their new track “Reaction” – what a banger. And not to forget, a guy ilke Pete Oak and the sounds he is doing, he’s one to watch out for!
You really need melody-focused productions in my opinion, to get that summer vibe going.

HMWL: What is the nearest future plans for Lou Van? Productions / gigs / collaborations?

Lou Van: Well, right now I’m just focusing on doing my thing in the studio and exploring my sound. Futurewise, i’m currently in contact with a few labels about my productions, and is doing an EP for the label Adult Music, who also have Loverdose under their wings. Any more than that, i can’t say That’s the thing about this business i guess. Everything is in slow-motion – i’ve heard about people releasing their tracks 1 year after they finished them, so you really need to be patient in this game haha.

Podcast 81 comes from a Göteborg Acid and Deep house hero. John H has been releasing some wicked ACID tracks on Analoge Dust back in the day. Today he is preparing a bunch of new EPs with a more distinct Deep house touch. Tracklist and a short Q&A below.

HMWL: Who is John H and when did you get into the house sound?
John H: I’m a 28 year old DJ, electronic music enthusiast and all around nice guy from Gothenburg, Sweden.

I think my first experience with deeper techno must have been in the late 90s when I heard stuff from labels like Basic Channel and Mille Plateux, I was only 13-14 years old back then, and generally kids my age had no idea music of this kind even existed, but I was taken under the wing of Swedish DJ and producer Anders Ilar, who tought how to spin vinyl and introduced me to a universe of good electronic music, with everything from harder techno and acid to experimental stuff, ambient etc. He was my mentor and teacher in those important early years and I’ll forever be thankful for this.

HMWL: You’ve also done some production work back in the days. What releases are to expect from you during the next 6 months
John H: First off I’ll have an older acid track I made back in 2005 released on a compilation from Rome based label Analog Dust, and I’m working hard to find suitable labels for never stuff. For me this year will be a lot about co-op with other artists. Me and my good friend Mathias Eriksson aka M.E.E.O just finished an EP of four acid influenced tracks, and at the moment we’re working on some more electro flavored stuff. I also have an oldschool acid project with Anders Ilar in the pipeline, I had just started recording acid lines for it when my 303 broke down, so I took the opportunity to send the machine down to Robin Whittle in Melbourne, Australia, for some service and Devil Fish modifications, as you understand I can’t wait to get it back! This project will be released under a secret alias tho, so I guess you’ll have to keep your ears and eyes out for it.

HMWL: The club scene in Göteborg where you are from. What’s going on? What’s hip, What’s underground? What’s overrated? Which clubs/event concepts are the one to check out while in town?
John H: The scene here is everchanging with new club nights popping up every month, and older ones closing down, right now there’s this big house/90s revival like everywhere else, so I guess that’s what’s up at the moment. Some of my favorite nights are Lokita/Ekolod at Jazzhuset and Musikinstitutet at Röda Sten, which always provide a good atmosphere and nice bookings, then there’s also the more underground clubs like Loftet and Klubb Cardboard at secret venues which doesn’t have to close at 3 like clubs in town, this is where the true heart and soul of Gothenburgs club scene is for me. During summer parties like this are usually held outside, often in a forest or near some lake or close by the sea, be sure to check those out, that’s my tip for anyone looking for a really nice party experience around here.

01 – ian pooley – compurhythm (baikal remix) (innervisions)
02 – kai limberger & blast sl – freebasin (jay tripwires acid sprinkler remix) (autark)
03 – frankie dep – the tattoo i wanted (area remote)
04 – the digital kid versus the world – angels looking down on me (tom demac remix) (classic music company)

2. Renato Ratier – Soul Machine [D-Edge Records]
Next out is Renato Ratier – The DJ Boss of famous D-Edge Brasil, brings back the 70s funk in Soul Machine. This is his debut EP on D-Edge very own D-Edge Records. Out end of March.

3. Lay-Far – Re-Mystery II (Terrence Parker Remix) [JD Records]
Another Russian around – Moscow Based Lay-Far signed a track to JD Records.
JD is a new vinyl only label operated by Jimi Disko right out of the Subwax Barcelona.
The legendary Terrance Parker remix smells like early morning spring sun in Chicago.

4. Lars Vegas – The Game [Large Records]
Chicago meets Amsterdam as Detroit Based Lars Dales uncovers a new monicer. Out end of March.

5. Martin Brodin – Oh Yeah [MB Disco]
The Swedish techno veteran makes a tight direction change and uncovers a nu-disco album to be released in the end of March. Oh yeah is my favorite track so far

_________________________________________________________

Classics:

6. DJ T – City Lights (Maceo Plex remix) [Get Physical 2011]
This guy called Maceo Plex has been dominating large parts of the scene for the next few years. Here is his already classic remix for Get Physical Music. The lyrics and the track are rewritten from an 80s disco classic I’ve forgotten.

7. Julien Jabre – Paixão [Elias Production 2003]
Paris, France – late 90s / early 2000s. Africanism all-stars, samba influences. You know the drill.

8. Salif Keita – Madan (Martin Solveig Exotic Disco Remix) [Universal France 2003]
Same as above. This tracks is oldschool enough to not sound cheesy and works every time on every dancefloor.
