Deep within the central Russia, on the slopes of Ural mountains stands the might city of Ekaterinburg. Named after Peter the Great’s wife, the 4th largest city in Russian union is also known as the road to Asia. With Kazakstan just a few hundred kilometers south of the city, Ekaterinburg is sometimes called the border city between Europe and Asia.

Oleg Soul, affiliated to the italian masterclass Aenaria records as well Brooklyn based Deep Nota Records. It’s his forthcoming back to the roots release simply called House Music on Deep Nota that caught our ears.

There is something about the Russians and the progressive sound. No matter if they play house, techno or drum’n'bass they can’t live without those trancy atmospheric arrangements and female vocals. Maybe it’s the many-sided beauty of the great Russian outdoors, maybe it’s the ancient traditional fables being retold through music. Maybe it’s just a lasting trend.

For this weekend we are especially proud to present a mix by Mr K’Alexi Shellby -  one of the founding fathers of Chicago house movement and the latest artist to join our family at WMWL booking agency.

As the veteran of house music & Tec and resident at the legendary The Warehouse – Mr K’Alexi has been a leading light in the scene for the past twenty years. Known as one of the founding fathers of Chicago house, K’Alexi at the tender age of 12 found himself moving in the right circles with the likes of Ron Hardy, Marshall Jefferson, Mr. Lee and Frankie Knuckles.

Many Russians will claim that St:Petersburg is the real capital of Russia – The original Petrograd found by Peter the Great in 1703. In the early and mid-90s the club culture really boomed, starting with underground rave venues and with time dedicated house & techno clubs like Griboedov and Moloko.

For our 56th podcast we hooked up with one of St:Petersburg most creative underground profiles – Sasha Kaktus. Sasha runs the iTech Sound System label. He organizes and books a bunch of good house events in St:Petersburg and also hosts his own podcast and web-tv.

House Music With Love: Tell us a bit more about Sasha Kaktus. How and when did you get yourself into the electronic music?

SASHA: I started playing in clubs at the end of 1997. And somehow, it quickly began to turn. Performances, tours, organization of parties, and only 3 years ago I decided to organize everything in my head and created a company iTech Sound System which includes event & booking agency, digital music label, podcast & web-tv. Currently working on its development and promotion of the label. We have many parties in Russia and in Europe. I Never stand still and try all means to promote high-quality sound to the masses. That’s what I can speak briefly about myself ;)

House Music With Love: How is the house and techno scene in St Petersburg today?
SASHA: Underground scene in St Petersburg develops and expands. We have an increasing number of talented musicians and DJs known all over the world, more and more world-top artists visit our city every weekend, no wonder, our city is called the club-capital of the Russia.

HMWL: Tell us about the podcast, are these your favorite track atm or are you leading us on a certain music journey?

PATLAC: For sure there are only favorite tracks in the podcast. maybe its not totally the same type of music I would play in the club. but some tracks for sure. I wanted do a podcast to enjoy at your preparty, on your mp3-player while you walk around or during clean up or what ever you want to while listening to it. And of course for the journey, your own journey!

HMWL. How do your prefer to release your music – all over the beatport or on limited 12″, like LUV003?
PATLAC: I prefer to release my music on vinyl. But on digital as well, I want that everybody to be able to get the tracks, since I know it’s hard to find vinyls in certain countries.  The luv release is very special. its limited to 300 copys and only vinyl. usually nobody know who is the artist of the track. its only about the music.

HMWL What is your master plan for 2012?
PATLAC: I think my master plan for 2012 is to do more one tracks and not so many remixes. And hopefully at lot of djing!

HMWL:  Tell us about the tracks and the thoughts you put into it, when compiling this mix. Is there a red thread?
Jon: Well, they are not all like box fresh tunes, its not a radio show mix in that sense…I like  house music that’s idiosyncratic or eccentric, so its a case of casting my ears over whatever music fits my errr, vision, dare I say! I do like to push the dynamic over the set so its all about creating a bit of a roller coaster and getting a certain intensity to the mix whilst playing some freak music, I guess. There’s a lot of editing of tracks and multi layering but I’ve eased back on this one as I felt it was getting a little too dense on previous mixes, too much of a wall of sound…

HMWL:  You’ve been living in Stockholm for a few years now – how is the Stockholm club scene compared to the one of Manchester – from a Dj point of view?
Jon: Been here a year and a half! Well there’s a certain sense here of what is “underground”…its broader musically in the UK…there’s more underground and music that is “underground”, as it were! And its not always obsessed with Berlin!  I been to some great parties here and even DJed at a couple!

HMWL: What’s Jon Dasilva master plan for 2012? Releases, remixes, side-projects?
Jon: There is an album on the verge of completion  with new band Hallo Halo (Christine Deckhert, Jonas Nilsson and Moi)…we start rehearsing for the live show over the weekend. I’m doing some straight (!) house music with Donald Waugh who I did the Rush Hour release with last year… he is moving over from London for a few months to write and record.There’s a collaboration with Irish wonder boy Jonny Bubba and some tracks forthcoming on a cool UK label, which I’m just confirming this week…and some Spanish action with a couple of Spanish residencies including a monthly in Barcelona starting in May…
