The Amazing benefits of taking beetroot

There has been plenty of publicity about the benefits of {{widget type="catalog/product_widget_link" anchor_text="Beetroot" template="catalog/product/widget/link/link_block.phtml" id_path="product/496"}} juice and its effects on lowering blood pressure but are you aware of the benefits it has for sports men and women.

{{widget type="catalog/product_widget_link" anchor_text="Beetroot" template="catalog/product/widget/link/link_block.phtml" id_path="product/496"}} is high in dietary nitrate which is then converted by enzymes in Saliva into {{widget type="catalog/product_widget_link" anchor_text="Nitric Oxide" template="catalog/product/widget/link/link_block.phtml" id_path="product/544"}} which has been discovered, by researchers at the University of Exeter, that {{widget type="catalog/product_widget_link" anchor_text="Beetroot" template="catalog/product/widget/link/link_block.phtml" id_path="product/496"}} enables people to exercise for up to 16% longer.

So what are the benefits of increasing your {{widget type="catalog/product_widget_link" anchor_text="Nitric Oxide" template="catalog/product/widget/link/link_block.phtml" id_path="product/544"}} levels?

Studies by the University of Exeter have shown that {{widget type="catalog/product_widget_link" anchor_text="Nitric Oxide" template="catalog/product/widget/link/link_block.phtml" id_path="product/544"}} improves stamina and increases the body’s ability to use oxygen more efficiently.

For the study, nine club-level competitive male cyclists were asked to compete in time trials over 4km (2.5 mile) and 16.1km (10 mile). All the riders were asked to do each time trial twice. Each time they were asked to drink half a litre of {{widget type="catalog/product_widget_link" anchor_text="Beetroot" template="catalog/product/widget/link/link_block.phtml" id_path="product/496"}} juice beforehand. On one occasion they had normal {{widget type="catalog/product_widget_link" anchor_text="Beetroot" template="catalog/product/widget/link/link_block.phtml" id_path="product/496"}} juice, on the other occasion (unbeknown to the cyclists) the {{widget type="catalog/product_widget_link" anchor_text="Beetroot" template="catalog/product/widget/link/link_block.phtml" id_path="product/496"}} juice had the nitrate removed.

The researchers monitored athletes' VO2 levels (showing the amount of oxygen consumed) during exercise to ensure that the cyclists worked at maximum effort on each occasion.

Results showed that when the cyclists drank ordinary {{widget type="catalog/product_widget_link" anchor_text="Beetroot" template="catalog/product/widget/link/link_block.phtml" id_path="product/496"}} juice they had a higher power output (measured in watts) for the same level of effort which suggests that their muscles and cardio-vascular system were being more efficient. On average, riders were 11 seconds (2.8%) quicker over the 4km distance and 45 seconds (2.7%) faster over the 16.1km distance.

Interesting!

Free NHS Slimming Classes

More is being done for people who are overweight, the UK Health Service now payout over 3 million pounds to the UK largest slimming groups Slimming World and Weight Watchers. The free classes are available to people who are referred by their local GP's.

Over 70,000 vouchers have been purchased which will allow over 70,000 people to join these classes. Both companies were paid upfront but a worrying statistic for the people who got referred less than 60% stuck to the free slimming classes. While paying members stumped up £65 for a 12 week course. Members were furious about this and some people argued it's a waste of taxpayers money.

It's believed that GP's refer patients who have a body mass index or BMI over 25 as this is deemed overweight and 30 being obsese.

Different councils offer various incentives or bribes for people to lose weight;

A Pounds for Pounds scheme which has been setup by Eastern and Coastal Kent Primary Care Trust offers patients cash prizes as part of a diet competition, which paid out £70 to participants who lost 15lbs, a further £90 for 30lbs and £265 for those who shed 50lb.

Kent NHS faced criticism after it emerged they were offering people 'bribes' of up to £425 if they managed to lose weight.

Many people for a long time have been using slimming groups, slimming aids and slimming patches to lose weight over the years but all types of dieting and weight loss requires effort and dedication.

The BMA (British Medical Association) hit out at the Government for not following the examples set by Northen Ireland, Scotland and Wales to abolish charges altogether.

Some things haven't changed such as "complex" NHS dental treaments these will be charged at the existing rate of £198. Everything else from X-rays to polish will increase by 0.30p while fillings and extractions will rise by £1.

People aged 60 or over, under-16s, those aged 16 to 18 in full-time education, people on benefits and pregnant women are also exempt.

The interesting facts behind these extra charges are that it's estimated prescription charges will contribute £437 million to the NHS in 2009/10, In England 89 per cent of prescriptions are dispensed for free. It's the 11 per cent which accumulate the £437 million for the NHS. From April 1, cancer patients will be eligible for free prescriptions.

If you lived in Scotland you would find your prescription reduced to £4 in April and abolished in 2011. Prescriptions are already free in Wales and will be free in Northern Ireland next year.

What will this mean in the future?

Every week we hear about people who resulted in removing their own teeth, due to being unable to get on a NHS practice will we see an increase in cases like this from people who can't afford the repair or prescription?

Or will we see a possible boost or demand in health supplements, people using natural remedies and well known such as glucosamine to help boost their body's natural defence system?

Working Shifts Slows Metabolism

In a recent study scientists have found that working shifts can slow down the body’s metabolism, which in return can lead to an increase in weight gain. This doesn't come as a great surprise to most. Usually many people have undertaken some sort of shift work in their lives. The typical shift would run from 2:00pm until 10:00pm, upon finishing the shift many people would snack or possibly have a late supper before bed.

Researchers have discovered that working at night and sleeping during the day affects the body's natural rhythms and slows down the rate it burns energy. This then leaves the late snack or supper breaking down or being used as energy difficult often turning into excess weight.

Some health supplements do actually speed up the body's metabolism aiding slimming.

How Much Water

Everybody knows water plays an important role with health and general living. The British Dietetic Association’s recommended 2.5 litres a day but how many litres do you drink per day? A great way of remembering how much you have consumed is by keeping 5 elastic bands around a half litre water bottle. Each time you fill the bottle either move one of the bands to the bottom of the container or take it off.

Drinking 2.5 litres of water per day can be hard work and nothing more frustrating wondering if you have had enough or too little. Daily water intake is important as insufficient intake raises fat deposits in the body, also with reduced levels of water intake the kidneys and become strained and decreases the ability of the liver to metabolize fat.

Another benefit of water is if you take any health supplements or nutrients the water helps them to be absorbed by the body.

As we know many people started their big diet on New Years Day or a few days later. 2009 has recently seen 200,000 people sign up to Mr Motivator on GMTV and the demand for slimming aids has been phenomenal.

Helping you to succeed we have created three simple points;

Balance
Getting fit isn't about being strict with your diet and lifestyle. Saying no to bacon butties and embracing a punishing fitness regimen will often make you binge and give up on the diet.

Free
One of the best methods to feel great and shape up is walking. Taking a 30 minute walk can help burns fat, builds muscle, increases metabolic rate, reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and stress. Something free which is good for you.

Motivation
Many people think loosing weight is simply about loosing weight. People set themselves targets 10 pounds, 1 stone, 2 stone. People often use these as mile stones but get frustrated when they are taking time to achieve. Setting yourself motivation targets such as walking a mile, running for 5 minutes will help you shift the weight but also give you instant motivation.

Everybody knows the feeling when they're going to catch a cold. The symptoms are usually aching muscles, tiredness, lack of motivation, sore throat, thirsty and generally feeling not your normal self.

Recently scientists have linked the increase of possibly catching a cold with a lack of sleep. The researchers found people who sleep for less than seven hours a night and do not sleep soundly are three times more likely to develop a cold, when they are exposed to the cold virus, than those who sleep for eight hours or more.

Sleeping has been linked to the immune system, this is when people are ill they usually feel tired. If you don't sleep your immune system doesn't have time to restore itself.

Glucosamine is regarded as one of the most effective supplements for joints within the UK, and is taken by millions of people to help with pain relief. Glucosamine is formulated using Potassium Chloride (2KCl). This effectively stabilises Glucosamine, the average western diet provides far too much salt and not enough potassium.
5 Slimming Tips For 2009

You might already know Christmas often leaves you with a few extra pounds around the waistline, many people often kick start the New Year with slimming, weight loss and general health resolutions. In 2009 why don't you give yourself an extra boost. Many people often fail after the first week in January!

Health Rack has thought of the best tips to help you succeed in 2009.

Like most people everybody now has a digital camera whether it be a mobile phone, digital camera or even a web cam. Take a picture of yourself or use one that has been taken over the festive period, save it as your desktop background or print it and add it to the front of the fridge. This will help remind you of why your wanting to lose weight.

Don't start a diet on the 1st of January. When starting diets you need to prepare yourself, usually after Christmas people are still visiting family and relaxing after the festive period. Enjoy yourself, you can always start your diet 1 week later. It won't do any harm and you will be less tempted to stray if you were on a diet.

Don't start your diet on a Monday, many people think that the start of a new week will help you motivationally. We think that this will only hinder your chances. Try starting your diet on a Friday you might think "how strange" but by starting your diet on a Friday you will have all weekend to get yourself prepared for the week ahead, often weight gain is related to how much time people have. Instead of preparing a healthy meal which can take 30 minutes, people go for a quick solution takeaway, microwavable meals or fast food. By doing this you will probably find your wallet will grow in weight rather than your wasteline.

Get something extra if your looking to join a gym, new gym memberships in the January month are very popular. When looking to join a gym make sure its the correct one for you. More expensive gyms don't mean you will lose more weight. You need to asses what you want to achieve? weight loss, muscle gain or general fitness. Do they have enough equipment? during the busy periods? Ask to try the gym first. Most gyms will give you a free day, week or even 2 weeks.

Get a little extra help, when your on a diet you don't need to eat like a rabbit, still eat the things you enjoy but in moderation. If you need that little extra push, don't think you can't use slimming aids. People use these to help suppress appetite, this often helps when usually you would turn to a quick snack chocolate, crisps and chocolate biscuits. Slimming aids come in various forms and often known as slimming capsules, slimming pills and many others. All these have different properties and ingredients. One of the most popular is Hoodia Gordonii. This has known to be used by the bushmen it works by suppressing the appetite for centuries in order to help keep hunger at bay whilst on long hunting trips.

Day 8 - 2nd December

Today is the start of Week 2 of the program and the first thing i had to do this morning was to weigh myself and measure body fat. Hoping to see some kind of improvement, i was not looking for a huge improvement. I think this will come during weeks 2-4.

Weight: 69.2Kg
Body Fat: 13%

Today is cardio training day. I have made a few changes to my cardio session this week. Working more on Anaerobic fitness rather than the Aerobic fitness I was working on last week.

It is always good to change your training programs around. Not only can it be boring doing the same things day in day out, but your body will get used to the same exercises and they will become less effective. Keep your sessions mixed to keep your body guessing.

Supplements today:-
2 x Protein Shakes
1 x CLA
2 x Sports Vit

Today's Training:-

1 Mile Run at Fast Pace
5 Mile Cycle at Fast Pace
1 Minute Skipping - 3 Sets
Burpees - 10x3 sets

My Diet today consisted of the following:-
Breakfast: Bowl of Porridge, 1 Banana & Glass of Orange Juice
Snack: Protein Shake
Lunch: Vegetable Soup and Chicken Sandwich & Piece of Fruit
Snack: Protein Shake
Dinner: Salmon, Mashed Potato and Steamed Vegetables

I'll be back tomorrow, don't forget to check in!

Prevent Cold Sores This Winter

During the winter months people become more susceptible to the dreaded “cold sores” often the symptoms for infection is the tell-tale tingle. Cold sore are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) the infection usually occurs in childhood when somebody is kissed by a family member who has a cold sore. The virus is then passes through the skin and travels up a nerve and hide in the nerve root until it's activate.

When you get the tingling sensation this usually means that the virus has been activated and travels back to the skin this is when the sores appear. The sores are generally itchy, painful and slightly embarrassing because they are noticeable.

The common triggers for the cold sore are;

Illnesses, such as colds and flu

Menstrual periods

Emotional upset

Fatigue

Bright sunlight

Cold winds

The best thing to do with a cold sore is prevent rather than treat. You can help prevent cold sores by wearing a lip balm containing UV protection. Eat healthy by eating a balanced diet with high levels of vitamins A, C, and E, zinc and iron is also important to keep the immune system strong.

Also many people suggest that the herb melissa, or lemon balm has natural properties that help prevent the virus taking hold.

Day 3 - 27th November

As i mentioned yesterday, i trained without the WWS products. Today was my first day training with the products i had been recommended. I have reveiwed them here:-

Winning Ways Sports Protein & Complex Carbohydrate
I have taken Protein Supplements in the past so i do have knowledge to reference from. Having never had Vanilla flavour before i was a little unsure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised and the taste was quite nice. The vanilla was a little rich for me so i just added a little extra water and it was perfect. It was also very easy to mix, i use a shaker bottle and it mixed very quickly and consistently.

Winning Ways Sports CLA 1000
This capsule was very easy to swallow with a little water, advised to be taken with food. Hopefully this help with reducing my fat content.

Winning Ways Sports Vit
Again, very easy to swallow and has quite a nice taste! Vitamins and Minerals are very important so this was an essential supplement as far as i am concerned

After my workout yesterday i was feeling a little sluggish this morning. Obviously i didn't take anything yesterday so the test will come tomorrow after i have had a full day of supplements.
Today i have had:-
3 x Protein Shakes
1 x CLA
2 x Sports Vit

Today's workout was as follows, i focused on cardio today, i will be back into strength training tomorrow:-

2 Mile Run at Medium Pace
10 Mile Cycle at Medium Pace
1 Minute Skipping - 3 Sets
10m Sprints - 5x3 sets

My Diet today consisted of the following:-
Breakfast:Scrambled Egg on Brown Toast, 1 Banana & Glass of Orange Juice
Snack: Protein Shake
Lunch:Chicken Sandwich, Piece of Fruit & Yogurt
Snack: Protein Shake
Dinner:Spaghetti Bolognaise

Snack: Protein Shake

Don't Forget to check back tomorrow

Day 2 - 26th November

Today is my first full training day, I will start using the WWS supplements from tomorrow, the products i have been recommended for use are as follows:-

Winning Ways Sports Protein & Complex Carbohydrate
Given my goals outlined in Day 1, it was recommended to me that not only would I need a good supply of protein to help to repair and recover from strength training, but also a source of carbohydrate to help with endurance training.

Winning Ways Sports CLA 1000
This should help me reduce body fat whilst helping with the growth of lean muscle mass

Winning Ways Sports Vit
Vitamins and Minerals are essential in any good diet but especially so for those with hectic and energetic lifestyles. Sports Vit Contains 11 Vitamins and 9 Minerals which should help replace those lost during exercise.

After my training today i will not be taking any supplements for this one day. The reason for this is to test and see what "immediate" effects the supplements can have from the off.

As my goal is to gain weight and muscle mass while improving aerobic fitness, I will be combining quite a lot into my workouts. Today's workout was as follows:-

Warmup
1 Mile Run - Average Speed of 13Km/h

Strength Sets
Shoulder Press 5x20Kg Dumbbells - 4 Sets
Behind Neck Press 15x25Kg Bar - 3 Sets
Frontal Shoulder Raise 12x8kg - 3 Sets
Lateral Shoulder Raise 12x6kg - 3 Sets
Tricep Dips (Unassisted) 8x3 Sets

Cardio/Conditioning
1 Minute Skipping - 3 Sets
10m Sprints - 5x3 sets

I then finished off with some random plyometric exercises consisting of laterals jumps, squat jumps and depth jumps

I will update you tomorrow as to how I feel after this session. I will be alternating heavy lifting days with cardio days to give the muscles a chance to rest.

My Diet today consisted of the following:-
Breakfast: Bowl of Porridge, 1 Banana & Glass of Orange Juice
Lunch: Vegetable Soup, Chicken Sandwich
Dinner: Lemon Soul Fish, Jacket Potato and Mixed Vegetables

See you guys tomorrow !

5 Facts & 5 Myths About Metabolism

5 Facts About Metabolism

1. The term 'metabolic rate' refers to the energy (calories) you expend over a day just keeping your body functioning - your heart beating and your lungs breathing, for example.
2. Its been proven no matter what weight you are you will still burn the same amount of calories while sitting or lying quietly. This test has been carried out by measuring the amount of oxygen breathed in and the amount of carbon dioxide breathed out.
3. Drinking water can increase your metabolic rate, although the metabolic boosting effects are small. Ice cold water works the best.
4. Weight training boosts your metabolism more than a cardio workout.
5. Your metabolism is controlled by the thyroid gland in the neck, which in turn is governed by a part of the brain called the hypothalamus.

5 Myths About Metabolism

1. Overweight people believe they eat very little and still put on weight, hence the 'slow metabolism' theory, but research has shown people tend to eat more than they think.
2. One of the most common myths about metabolism, if a person is over weight then they have a slower metabolism than somebody who is at the correct weight.
3. Grapefruit won't work miracles for your metabolism, but it can help you lose weight. Half a grapefruit before meals helped individuals lose about 4 pounds in 12 weeks
4. Skipping meals will speed up metabolism, digestion itself burns a large amount of calories. If you skip meals, you're not feeding your body. It reacts by slowing down your metabolism to conserve energy.
5. He / She can eat as much as he / she likes because their metabolism burns up everything. If your overweight, walking will speed up your metabolism more then somebody who is the correct weight. As it will take more effort to due to the extra weight.

Joint Pain Due To Arthritis

If you suffer from joint pain due to arthritis, there are many things you can do every day to improve your condition. Some may seem quite simple!

1.Reduce the stress on joints
Standing up for long periods, repeating the same tasks. Try changing the daily routine slightly which could mean sitting down for rest bites every hour. A change of footwear could help cushion the joints acting as shock absorbers wear thick sole shoes instead of thin shoes. Try and keep in your ideal weight range, extra weight means more pressure. Try low impact sports such as swimming to reduce weight. Equip your home or office with things that will help you carry out your daily tasks.

2.Diet
Fruit and vegetables hold great amounts of natural benefits, eating a healthy diet of fruit, vegetables, rice and pasta can also help with weight loss. Some people with arthritis find their condition improves when they give up certain foods. One theory is that this is because of a food allergy or food intolerance. To date no evidence has been found relating certain foods and conditions.

3.Help reduce the pain
This part relates to basic first aid on joints, if warmth is applied to the affected area it can relieve the pain and stiffness. Items such as creams, heat lamps and even hot water bottles can help. If the problem area is inflamed use an ice pack to help reduce this. Always remember to cover the ice, ice can burn if placed directly on the skin. Stress and muscle tension can also be a contributing factor try listening to music, having a long hot bath this can also help.

4. Foods that help
Foods can help with arthritis certain foods and dietary supplements have been linked to helping people with the condition. Some have been tested more than others. For example, there's evidence that the essential fatty acids found in fish oil and plant seed oils, such as sunflower oil and evening primrose oil, may help some people with rheumatoid arthritis. Glucosamine and Chondroitin, and cod liver oil can help those with osteoarthritis.

6 Steps To Avoid The Winter Blues

Its a well known fact that during the winter months many people start to feel depressed this is caused by many factors including the weather, the nights becoming dark earlier, money with Christmas and the weight gain over the festive period. All this causes strain to anybody during of everyday life.

With the credit crunch being mentioned everyday in the press what can you do to help and overcome the winter blues.

1.Make More Of The Daylight
This is the same reason people go on holidays for summer. The sun hold mysterious magic powers taking a walk during the day can help reduce the stress levels there is nothing more depressing then going to work in the dark and returning home in the dark. On your dinner hour take a 20 minute walk this will help reduce stress which builds up daily.

2.Get More Exercise
Gaining weight again can be a the cause of the winter blues, as it gets colder out come the thicker jumpers. Most often or not winter clothes are much more baggy that summer clothes so any weight gain that you might have will go unnoticed. Getting more exercise also helps release the chemical build up which causes stress levels to rise.

3.Save Money
Being with family often create a good feeling inside sharing laugher and fun. Doing family things doesn't need to be expensive of costly. On a Saturday or Sunday morning go for a walk to the local park or nature spot. If you can't make the morning that try watching a film or DVD always watch a film that makes you laugh. Laughter again releases the chemical toxins which causes stress levels to build.

4.Drink Plenty Of Water
This might sound silly as the weather outside is cold you most probably want a hot drink? Stress can leave you dehydrated so if you don't keep your water levels up, you'll feel more tired. Avoid stimulants like coffee, alcohol and fizzy drinks, as well as sugary, fatty and salty foods and cigarettes as they will make you feel worse.

5.Problems Sleeping.
One of the side-effects of stress is not being able to sleep, which does little to alleviate the problem. Sleepless nights can affect health, relationships, job and even the ability to perform simple tasks. If you're having trouble falling asleep, take a warm bath with a few drops of lavender that will help you breathe more deeply and allow your body to absorb more oxygen.

6.Take What You're Missing.
It sounds like a cliche, but health supplements really will help. For example as the colder nights set in people suffering with arthritis will start to feel it more. Taking glucosmaine supplementswill help hydrate and increase fluid between your joints. Vitamin C can help strengthen your immune system against colds and flu as it contains anti-oxidant that is required for tissue growth and repair.

Following these simple steps will help in combat the winter blues.

After 2 years of retirement the sporting legend that is Lance Armstrong is back in the saddle, and is going for his 8th tour de France. The founder of the LAF (Lance Armstrong Foundation) is said to make a come back in 2009, after announcing his come back early this month. Lance released the following statement:

"I am happy to announce that after talking with my children, my family and my closest friends, I have decided to return to professional cycling in order to raise awareness of the global cancer burden. This year alone, nearly eight million people will die of cancer worldwide. Millions more will suffer in isolation, victims not only of the disease but of social stigma. After the passage of Proposition 15 in Texas, a $3 billion investment in the fight against cancer which is helping to make this disease part of the national dialogue in America, it's now time to address cancer on a global level."

The 7 time tour de France winner who himself fought off 2 brain tumors and testicular cancer, by having intense chemotherapy and amazing will power, to then get back on the back to win another 6 tours, he is an inspiration to every, and is a living legend!

Things are looking up for the England football team after I very upsetting year for both players and fans after England didn’t even qualify for the knock out faze for Euro 2008 after being knocked out by Croatia 3 -2.

Now they are back with vengeances by beating the team that previously knocked them out of the Euro. Are England really back to Winning Ways? Or as usuall are we all getting our hopes up for them to knock them down again?

It was certainly a fast pasey game and England didn’t fail to disappoint, with young gunner Theo Walcott banging in a hat trick and also Rooney powering home a fourth goal for England, however it wasn’t all glory for England, Joe Cole took a nasty knock which left him with blood streaming from his head which forced Capello to make a change. John Terry then received a blow to the head which with out a doubt should have been a foul, however the referee let play carry on which then lead to a goal for Croatia, giving a final score England 4:1 Croatia
