This is obviously done under the watchful eyes of a licensed chiropractic doctor, but it is imperative to understand that the clinical services portion of the curriculum is probably considered to be the vital portion of the learning experience without which it is virtually impossible for a chiropractic doctor to enter medical practice confidently.</p>
<p>Not surprisingly, no student will want to miss this important aspect of her or his education, yet at the same time no other part of the curriculum causes more butterflies and fits of nervousness. It does not matter how well prepared you feel you are for chiropractics and how well you did in your book learning, the first five minutes with a real life patient suddenly make you realize that all your book learning means nothing if you cannot successfully bridge your theoretic understanding of a problem with a real life presentation thereof. Additionally, this is the time for chiropractic students to realize that many text books problems rarely present themselves in such a way as they are pictured in the books. Instead, there are usually a host of other circumstances that play an important role in the diagnoses and long term outlook and as such are of such vital importance that they must be noted separately.</p>
<p>Fortunately, the very fact that clinical services are an important part of the chiropractic curriculum enables the student to conduct - with supervision - an attempt at a successful assessment, diagnosis, and treatment regimen. Very often aspiring doctors are surprised when they realize how seemingly benign factors that are part of a patient&#039;s every day life can influence a treatment plan. A seasoned chiropractor overseeing the internship will gently guide the future doctor to understanding the implication and make allowances for them so that the overall care of the patient is not jeopardized while at the same time ensuring that all possible avenues of care are taken.</p>
<p>As you can see, clinical services are not for the faint of heart and without them a chiropractic curriculum would have very little chance of success. Not even the most intuitive chiropractic student will be able to understand the fine points of patient care to such an extent that she or he could make do without this portion of the curriculum. Additionally, the evaluations the future doctor will receive will help to underscore areas that need refinement while encouraging the development of those areas that show the greatest promise. Chiropractic students will do well to prepare for this phase of their education by studying hard in their basic and clinical sciences and thus getting ready for the privileges of clinical services.</p>

<p>Food starts the process of breaking down in our mouth when the teeth start to break chunks of food that have been bitten into smaller pieces by biting, tearing and chewing. Food particles can be trapped in between teeth, which can cause foul odor. Food also can contain oils that can be another source of bad breath. Certain foods like onions and garlic are good examples of foods that cause bad breath. Others are vegetables and spices. The oils in foods are first digested and the pungent oils are absorbed into the bloodstream. Then they are carried to your lungs where they are given off in your breath when you exhale, until the food is eliminated from your body.</p>
<p>Alcohol behaves in your body, much the same way as food. This is how breath analyzer tests work. What people smell on the breath of someone who has been drinking is not the alcohol but the components that are contained in the drink other than the alcohol.</p>
<p>Dental Problems:</p>
<p>Poor hygiene can lead to periodontal disease, which can lead to bad breath. If you forget to brush or floss, bacteria will collect in your mouth and on your tongue, which will emit hydrogen sulfur gases.</p>
<p>Another problem of poor oral care is that when you don&#039;t brush and floss properly gingivitis and tooth decay can result. Plaque-filled pockets form between your teeth and gums (periodontitis), can cause bad breath.</p>
<p>If you wear dentures and fail to clean them properly or if they do not fit properly and leave gaps where odor-causing bacteria and food particles and gather, you will experience bad breath.</p>
<p>Dry Mouth:</p>
<p>Saliva is used to moisten your mouth and cleanse it. When you do not have enough saliva due to dehydration, dead cells can accumulate on your tongue, gums and the inside of your mouth cheeks. These cells begin to decompose and then can cause odor.</p>
<p>Dry mouth is something that normally occurs while you sleep due to the many hours where you do not consume any water. We wake with &#034;morning breath&#034;. Those individuals who sleep with their mouth open suffer from dry mouth more than those who keep their mouth closed during sleep. Certain medications can lead to dry mouth as a side effect of the medication. There can also be medical problems with the salivary glands preventing them from producing saliva.</p>
<p>Diseases:</p>
<p>Bad breath can also be caused by chronic lung infections and lung abscesses. Very distinctive breath odor can be signal for certain illnesses. Kidney failure can cause a urine-like odor to your breath, liver failure may cause an odor that smells like fish, and those who have uncontrolled diabetes can have a fruity breath. Individuals who have chronic reflux of stomach acids (GERD) or have a small protrusion of the stomach into the chest cavity (hiatal hernia) can also have bad breath.</p>
<p>Mouth, Nose, Throat Conditions:</p>
<p>Those who suffer from sinus infections and have nasal discharge from their sinuses that drip down the back of the throat can have a bad odor to their breath. Kids who have foreign object stuffed into their noses can have bad breath. Strep throat, tonsillitis and mononucleosis can also cause bad breath. Those who cough up sputum like those with bronchitis and other upper respiratory infections can have bad breath. Canker sores of the mouth can also cause bad breath, especially if periodontal disease also exists.</p>

<p>Tobacco products cause a very unpleasant stink from the mouth and are also more likely to have periodontal disease, which will also give them bad breath.</p>

Unfortunately, osteoporosis is not often diagnosed until bone density has decreased to the point where fractures occur with mild stress. Because of this osteoporosis is often referred to as the silent disease. The most common fractures associated with osteoporosis occur in the wrist, spine and hip. These fractures can be painful, difficult to heal, and cause many other issues for women. Hip fractures can lead to immobility and a loss of independence. Spinal fractures can cause chronic pain, stooped posture and loss of self-esteem. There is no known cause or cure for osteoporosis, however several risk factors have been identified and there are treatment methods available.</p>
<p>It is estimated that up to half of all women will experience an osteoporosis related fracture in their lifetime. Besides their sex, there are several other factors that increase the risk of osteoporosis that are related to women. Risk factors for osteoporosis include race, body type, family history, smoking, alcohol use, sedentary lifestyle, inadequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, certain medications, anorexia nervosa, and low estrogen levels.</p>
<p>Osteoporosis is of special concern to women since they make up about 80% of the population of those living with osteoporosis. Women are four times more likely then men to develop osteoporosis. This may be because women have less bone mass to begin with and they live longer then men. After peak bone mass is reached, all adults start to lose bone mass at a stable rate. As women age estrogen levels decrease and the risk of osteoporosis increases because the loss of estrogen speeds up the rate of bone loss.</p>
<p>Since most women are already at-risk, prevention should start early and be maintained throughout life. Hormones play a big part in bone health. Women who take birth control pills during their reproductive years may reduce their risk of osteoporosis developing later in life, women who have had children also seem to have a slightly lower risk. Hormone therapy is often a treatment for women experiencing menopause symptoms and helps to prevent osteoporosis. Studies show that up to half of all women do not get the recommended amount of calcium in their diets.</p>
<p>Calcium is vital to bone health along with vitamin D. Good sources of calcium include dairy products, leafy green vegetables, nuts, and seafood. Milk is also fortified with Vitamin D along with a few other foods; Vitamin D can also be obtained by getting enough sunshine. Dietary supplements may be advisable if adequate amounts of calcium are not taken in. Exercise in combination with calcium has shown to be the best prevention against osteoporosis. A balanced diet and regular weight bearing exercise builds and maintains strong bones because it helps to increase bone mass. The more steps a woman takes to prevent osteoporosis while younger the better the chance of getting osteoporosis and suffering from painful fractures when older.</p>

You also know that it can make you leaner and healthier. But so many of the health studies are done on men? What about women and the impact of a vegetarian diet on their health as they age?</p>
<p>Diets that are high in protein, especially animal protein, tend to cause the body to excrete more calcium, oxalate, and uric acid. These three substances are the main components of urinary tract stones. British researchers have advised that persons with a tendency to form kidney stones should follow a vegetarian diet. The American Academy of Family Physicians notes that high animal protein intake is largely responsible for the high prevalence of kidney stones in the United States and other developed countries and recommends protein restriction for the prevention of recurrent kidney stones.</p>
<p>For many of the same reasons, vegetarians are at a lower risk for osteoporosis. Since animal products force calcium out of the body, eating meat can promote bone loss. In nations with mainly vegetable diets (and without dairy product consumption), osteoporosis is less common than in the U.S., even when calcium intake is also less than in the U.S. Calcium is important, but there is no need to get calcium from dairy products.</p>
<p>We continue to consume meat, while at the same time downing calcium supplements and prescription drugs to prevent osteoporosis, that often have drastic side effects. And most experts agree that calcium supplements are inferior to calcium derived from natural food sources. Doesn&#039;t it make more sense (and cents) to get your calcium from eating a healthier diet?</p>
<p>What are some good vegetarian sources of calcium? Orange juice, for one. Dry beans, such as black-eyed peas, kidney beans and black beans are another good source, as are dark leafy vegetables such as broccoli and kale. Tofu is also a good source of calcium.</p>

<p>Alcoholics Anonymous is the gold standard for support groups. There people with bad habits relating to alcohol can meet and discuss their bad habits. They can talk about their experiences and share their hopes. They can gain strength by spending time with people whose goal is also to banish their bad habits.</p>
<p>Alcoholics Anonymous practices the Twelve-Step program for those whose bad habits have brought them to seek help. The system is designed to guide alcoholics through their despair and into sobriety. It is a rigorous program, but it is worth the work if you come out on the other side without your bad habits.</p>
<p>Another group the uses the Twelve-Step program for gaining control over bad habits is Overeaters Anonymous. Contrary to what the name implies, it is not just for people who eat too much. The largest number of members of any one group is those who overeat. However, it is also for those with bulimia or anorexia. It is for anyone who is &#034;powerless over food.&#034;</p>
<p>This group holds meetings as AA does. It also uses tests and other tools to help people evaluate the extent of their bad habits and depression. The Twelve-Step program leads them to work on their bad habits from perspectives that are physical, emotional, and spiritual. It has helped many people to gain control over their eating disorders.</p>
<p>Yet another group is based on the Twelve-Step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. This is Narcotics Anonymous. It is for people with bad habits with all kinds of drugs. You can be involved in the program no matter what kind(s) of drugs you used.</p>
<p>It does not matter if you used a few times or you used constantly for years. The important thing is what you want to do about it. Narcotics Anonymous provides you with a way to deal with these destructive bad habits in your life if you will do the work.</p>
<p>There are all kinds of smoking cessation support groups to help people quit their bad habits with smoking. There are groups at medical centers. There are groups at colleges. Some groups meet at community centers.</p>
<p>There are even smoking cessation groups that meet online. The websites give quite a bit of helpful information about your bad habits. They often will have a blog where people can compare notes about how their recovery from nicotine is going. Then, there are live chat support groups.</p>
<p>There are not support groups for all the bad habits that people have. No one is going to go around smacking your hand and saying,&#034;Do not drum your fingers!&#034;  At least, they will not do it as a support group. Yet, for many serious bad habits, there is help. In some cases, you will have to drive across town. In other cases, it is as near as your computer.</p>

In the case of children with Down syndrome, the decision-making tends to be left up to the doctors and specialists who are experts when it comes to dealing with Down syndrome. The need to relinquish control over to the experts can cause feelings of inadequacy for many parents. Occasionally parents will even be angry with they system and at the syndrome for not being able to parent their children they way they see fit without consulting anyone first.</p>
<p>Economics can be a big issue when it comes to parenting a child with Down syndrome. Many of the services that are needed for the child are not covered by health insurance and can be costly. The parents can have mixed feelings because the services are necessary but so it the integrity of the family finances. The feelings of being out of control of their own family life can be extremely stressful.</p>
<p>One recommendation that can reduce parenting stress and help the family with feelings of inadequacy and loss of control is to put together a support system for the family. Along with a support system for the family, it is important to use the child as part of the support system. The child can be included in helping to accomplish tasks within the family that need to be done and it helps to make the child feel like less of a cause of stress in the family.</p>
<p>Another way to reduce parenting stress is to seek information and to learn about everything the child with Down syndrome is going through. Knowledge is power and can give the parents a comfort when it comes to relying on others to make medical type decisions regarding their child. A great source of information that can also serve as a support system for the family is a parent support group for people who have children with Down syndrome. These groups are a wealth of information as well as support and comfort for stressed out parents.</p>
<p>Finally, parents of a Down&#039;s child need to be afforded the luxury of expressing their emotional needs and feelings regularly. Using the support network, the family can set up a place and time that is appropriate for sharing emotions and feelings. This will allow the parents to vent their feelings and ultimately feel better for letting off some steam. This is not only therapeutic and necessary but can actually help strengthen the family unit and help the family stay together and support each other.</p>
<p>Parenting any child is stressful and most parents of Down syndrome children can express the intense level of stress that comes with raising these children at least in the early years. The ability to identify stress and develop ways to get rid of the stress is most beneficial for the family as a unit.</p>

<p>If your blood contains more cholesterol than is considered to be a &#034;healthy&#034; amount, then you are diagnosed with high cholesterol. This is not your only problem, however. High cholesterol can also increase your risk of heart disease, heart attack, stroke, and even death.</p>
<p>How does this happen. LDL cholesterol, or the &#034;bad cholesterol&#034; builds up along the walls of your arteries when you have an excessive amount in your blood. Over time, this narrows the arteries and causes them to become hard. If left untreated, this narrowing can become worse to the point where the artery is completely blocked off. When this occurs, you have an extremely high risk of having a heart attack or stroke because the blood cannot get to where it needs to be. If your LDL levels are high, it becomes extremely important that you get them back down again as soon as possible.</p>
<p>For many people, diet, exercise, and medications are the most often prescribed ways to help lower LDL cholesterol. However, there are a variety of herbs and vitamins that you can try as well.</p>
<p>Niacin, or Vitamin B3, has been shown to lower LDL cholesterol by as much as 20 percent. At the same time, it can raise the level of the good cholesterol, HDL cholesterol by as much as 30 percent. Supplementing with niacin can help you make sure that you are getting enough of this nutrient.</p>
<p>Artichoke leaf is one herb that can help you lower the level of your cholesterol. It keeps your body from creating more cholesterol so that the levels you have will go down. At the same time, cynarin, a chemical found in artichoke leaves is supposed to help the liver produce more bile, which allows cholesterol to be flushed from your system.</p>
<p>Plant stanols and sterols are substances that are found in many plants. You can take these as a supplement, though you can also find them in the ingredient list of some juices, spreads, and dressings. They help reduce the amount of cholesterol you have because they are chemically similar to cholesterol. This allows them to block your intestines from absorbing the cholesterol that you eat.</p>

<p>If you find yourself in a hurry to prepare meals then one healthy alternative to slaving over a hot stove for hours is to buy frozen dinners at the supermarket that are pre-pared entrees that feature shrimp or fish. Before you turn up your nose at this idea, be aware that frozen dinners are becoming more nutritious all of the time and they are also becoming more and more tasty! Some options for these entrees include Lean Cuisine and Healthy Choice. Buying fish that is frozen is also an excellent idea but do not buy fried fish or you will defeat your purpose.</p>
<p>Be picky about the type of fish you choose and the way you prepare it. Steaming vegetable is healthier than boiling them because they retain more of their vitamins and minerals and the same can be said of fish when it comes to the omega-3 fatty acids. Fish varies tremendously in the amount of omega-3&#039;s it supplies. As an example, salmon contains a great deal more omega-3 fatty acids than does shellfish. With this said, it is better for the sake of omega-3 fatty acids to choose to eat a salmon steak as opposed to a shrimp cocktail.</p>
<p>As previously mentioned, how you prepare your fish plays a key role. If you decided to broil, boil, bake or grill your fish then that is a good idea, however frying is not a good choice. The dressing of a fish speaks volumes. If you are about to eat fish that has batter such as the fish and chips that so many people enjoy eating, then rest assured that your fish has been fried and this is not good in terms of omega-3 fatty acids and anything else. When eating out at a restaurant do not be shy, inquire of the waitress what the fish on the menu are wearing in terms of dressing and if the answer you receive is batter then keep perusing the menu.</p>
<p>Be careful of what you use to season your fish or give it that added bit of flavor. Do not overdo tartar sauce, butter or any type of seasoning or dip. Fish is tasty enough to be eaten on its own without needing anything to add to it. This is especially the case if you are watching your weight. One suggestion is to squeeze a small portion of fresh lemon on the fish or add a tiny bit of extra virgin olive oil.</p>
<p>If you are not a fish lover or if you have allergies to fish then do not despair, there are other ways to get your share of omega- 3 fatty acids in your daily diet. Omega-3 is also to be found in walnuts and dark leafy green vegetables such as spinach. Omega-3 can also be consumed in liquid form or capsule form. If you decide to go this route then speak to your doctor about it first and then look to the selection to be found at the health food store.</p>
