The Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program, which is offered by the National Rifle Association (NRA), will be facilitated by Kathy Sorenson, a local instructor who is also a retired teacher. Eddie Eagle himself is also rumored to be visiting. This event is part of the Highlands County Library System's Youth Summer Program.

This program was developed in 1988. It's purpose, according to NRA literature, is "to promote gun accident prevention for children in pre-K through 3rd grade by teaching a simple safety message so they know what to do should they come upon an unsecured firearm: STOP! Don't Touch. Leave the Area. Tell an Adult."

The program's materials are offered free of charge to the library system because of funding from the Friends of the NRA. Please call 699-3705 to reserve a seat as space restrictions permit only 30 children to attend.

The Lake Placid Friends of the Library are pleased to announce their sponsorship of the first performance of the Highlands County Youth String Orchestra on Wednesday, May 27th at 4:30 PM. The concert will take place at the Lake Placid Memorial Library. Admission is free.

The musical group formed a few months ago and is the realization of a dream of its director and conductor Diane Osborne, a classically trained violinist who performs as a soloist and also teaches. Osborne recently wrote about the orchestra, "It has offered student musicians the chance to improve faster, be enthusiastic about learning their instruments, and perform together."

Osborne has two associates who are helping her bring this, her second youth orchestra, to reality. Peggy Essex-Klammer is a music teacher, performer and violist. Debbie Mercer is also a music teacher and cellist. Both associates are performers with the Heartland Symphony. It is a goal all of the instructors that these students will also play in the Heartland Symphony someday.

There are eleven students in the orchestra at the present time ranging in age from nine to eighteen. Osborne hopes to double the group by this time next year. Eventually, woodwinds and perhaps brass will be added. "In the meantime, I would like to add a soloist now and then, accompanied by the string orchestra, to give serious student musicians the opportunity to strive toward perfection in their solo performance." Sponsorships from the community help to defray costs. Currently, practices are held at the Lake Placid Church of the Nazarene.

As stated before, the concert is free. The Friends would appreciate knowing how many will attend. Please call the library at 699-3705 to reserve a seat.

Here's a description from a representative of this district's Ombudsman office.

"An Ombudsman is a citizen representative who advocates on the behalf of others in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and other long-term care residents in Florida. The two main objectives for every Ombudsman are to investigate and resolve complaints and conduct inspections."

Still interested? Find out if this is for you. This is a very hot topic right now. What would happen to us here in Highlands County should this current Swine Flu become pandemic? Thomas J. Moran, Planning Consultant with The Highlands County Health Department, made a presentation in March of this year at Lake Placid Memorial Library on this very subject. At that time, interested citizens of the town attended. Because of recent increased concerns, more people are requesting information. So, Mr. Moran has graciously agreed to return to the library on Tuesday, May 5th at 4:00 o'clock PM and speak on the subject again.

Pandemic flu preparedness is one of the most important subjects in this new century. The last time that there was a major pandemic flu was in 1918-1919. At that time, more people died in the event than those that were lost in all of World War I. Fifty million people are estimated to have perished. Since then, there have been events in 1957 and 1968, which combined to cause a total loss of about 3 million lives.

The time for preparation is now. Plan to attend this most important event. Seating is limited to 25 people. Call Kathleen Mills Montgomery or Maria Chenique at 699-3705 to make arrangements to attend.

Have you always been fascinated by the thought of talking on a radio with people who might be on the other side of the world? Perhaps you've been wondering just how you might be able to help out should we have another hurricane. Do you think that you might like the challenge of amateur radio direction finding, which is also known as "fox hunting"? Would you like the opportunity to make contact with the International Space Station? All of these activities are possible if you take up the hobby of amateur radio, more commonly known as ham radio.

Many people get started in amateur radio by making contact with their local club. You will have an opportunity to do just that on Thursday, April 30th between 2:00 and 4:00 pm at Lake Placid Memorial Library. Join members of the Highlands County Amateur Radio Club as they talk about activities, licensing and equipment involved with this interesting pastime.
