Penguin Challenge

On December 20th, 2008, from 11am - 3:30 pm, the Avon Park Library will be hosting the "Penguin Challenge." The event consists of a Children's Art Contest and a Wii Game Challenge.

Children who wish to submit an entry for the art contest should bring in a picture they've painted or colored with their name, age and telephone number written on the back. There will be a $50 savings bond awarded to the winner, a giant stuffed penguin and a variety of other smaller gifts will be available (subject to overall participation).

The Wii Game Challenge will be divided into 2 age groups, 9-12 and 13 & up. Winners will receive a free pizza or other merchandise from local merchants!

"How the Grinch Stole Christmas" will be shown at 2:00pm and refreshments will be served throughout the event.

Keep track of daily reading log. Names of the participant readers appear in a paper fish chain that will be displayed at the library throughout the summer.

In addition to the summer programs, the Lake Placid Memorial library continues to introduce children to the love of reading with free Storytime for 3 to 5-year old children every Thursday at 10:00 am. Lapsits for infants and toddlers through three years of age will take place the first and third Thursday of the month at 10:30 am.

Landscape Design Classes

Environmental Horticulturist Dee Dee Jacobson is returning to the Lake Placid Memorial Library to offer landscape design seminars. The two-hour Saturday classes will include practical tips and information to make your landscape a source of enjoyment and satisfaction.

Design Your Own Landscape, August 14 - 10:00 am

New Hours in April

The Sebring Public Library now has new hours. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, we will now be opening at 10:30 am and closing at 6:30 pm. Our closed days will remain Sunday and Monday. Hours on Friday and Saturday will remain 9:30 am to 5:30 pm.

And please remember our Catalog, Electronic Databases, Downloadable Audiobooks, E-books and your Library Account are available around the clock.

Hank Mattson "Cracker Cowboy Poet"

"Hank Mattson is a working Cracker Cowboy Poet who lives in Florida.

He has performed at cowboy poetry gatherings from Florida to Utah. He's a member of the Florida Cattlemen's Association, the Pro. Rodeo Hall of Fame Society and the Friends of Florida Folk.

Hank uses his own works and those of turn-of-the-century punchers to chronicle and preserve the life and times of the many Florida Folks who for over 400 years have been workin' cattle."
