So here we are…

So I’m going to make an attempt to dust off this site and start “blogging” again. I’m going forward without comments.

There are a lot of reasons for no longer allowing comments. One reason I had in the past is there was not platforms that were easily accessible to everyone at the time. I allowed anonymous comments and tried as much as I could to not over moderate anything. It was exhausting and took a very heavy mental toll on me. There are now plenty of platforms now that if anyone would like to express their opinion on anything posted here nothing is stopping them now with facebook, twitter, and instagram. I am on all of those platforms as well with varying degrees of engagement depending on how I’m feeling on any given day.

We’ll see how it goes or if I even have anything worthwhile to say to sustain regular content.

This is reposted from instagram, but belongs here as well. I haven’t update much and dropped the ball on delivering all the news over the past 2 weeks about the LOVE ban getting lifted due to the renovations coming to the park.

I didn’t get to skate last week at the open invite to LOVE one last time but I went last night in the rain and slush to take a walk around for old time sake and revisited a lot of memories and still don’t know what to think or how to feel about it all.

I first visited Philly in ’96 with Steve Healy via LowRider Skateshop. I had just graduated high school and had no idea what to do next. Skateboarding was life at that point in time but I knew Philadelphia was the place to be. We stayed in West Philly in Fat Bill’s tiny 1 bedroom apartment. We watched Trilogy for the first time. We watched it almost non stop at the apartment when we weren’t skating.

We pushed from 38th and Spruce all the way down South Street. I remember seeing the skyline from the bridge for the first time. I remember being amazed at the entire mission and how far we had skated yet it felt like normal. We skated the entire time. I learned pole jams and wall rides. We met up at Love Park every day with so many other skateboarders. I hadn’t seen anything like it. It was an amazing, eye opening experience.

I fell in love with LOVE park and the city of Philadelphia. I knew I wanted to live here.

2 years later I moved to Philadelphia and aside from a 2 year “vacation” in Albuquerque, I’ve called this city my home. I’ve made endless amounts of new friends and memories.

They say they are going to donate the granite and relocate it eventually but how, where, and when is anyone’s guess. We are losing a world renowned spot and the city will never be the same. Everything happens for a reason I guess and although skateboarding is no longer life the way it once was, I hope this city can continue to grow and remain influential to skateboarding. I don’t claim to be an OG by any means but I’m happy to have put my time in and contributed how I could.

Thank you Skateboarding. Thank You Edward Bacon. Thank you to all of the people I’ve met in this city, especially those who are carrying the torch. Thank you LOVE Park. Rest In Peace.

I skated 2 days in a row! Yesterday I even learned that I can still do nose grinds both ways if the ledge or box is just right. I’ll take it!

My home town of Buffalo recently had a spot check article published that JP of Sunday Skateshop where he runs down 6 famous Buffalo Spots old & new. I didn’t get to skate all of these as a few of them were after my time in Buffalo or plain old just out of my skill bracket. I’m really iching to skate Trackmasters again now after this.

The main photo kickflip in the article at the main place mall is pretty gnarly. There is a granite slab right after you land that if you don’t turn away from it you could get pretty messed up. Aside from drop ins, the 1st major thing I remember going down on that thing was Ricky O’s manual to ollie in. Go check the article to read about Dave Weaver’s gnarly kickflip into that thing. Rest in Peace Dave! Go watch his original edit from Sunday’s “Whatever the Weather” video after you read that interview and spot check to see that amazingly scary kickflip. Do we really care that he didn’t completely roll away clean knowing he went and did it after going through Chemo? Hell naw.

Thanks for helping keep Buffalo on the map for skateboarding, JP! It’s grown so much since I left.

After 10 years and 60 issues of helping push east coast skating to the world Focus Skate Mag will be throwing in the towel. I’m honored to have had the opportunity to help them out and work with them on their website In the beginning. Thanks for putting out so many awesome issues that helped showcase some of the best skateboarding on the East Coast, guys. The mag will be missed, no doubt.

Tonight some people from the warehouse are setting up a screen to  have a viewing of the new Van’s Video, Propeller, upstairs at American Sardine Bar. Viewing is at 9. 21+ since it IS a bar.

Black Diamond X-Park, previously known as X-Games Skatepark* and the Slippery Skatepark, at the Franklin Mills, I mean Philadelphia Mills Mall is trying to raise money to keep the park open. As of this post they’ve raised $1,335 of the 13K they are trying to raise. The lease is up and the landlord wants a “substantial security deposit down on the lease, and a significant chunk towards the insurance for the park“. I’m not sure what the exact breakdown of that price is but they need o raise the money by the end of May in order for the park to remain open.

I had the opportunity to skate burnside for the first time last year and I really hope it won’t be my last. The place is so much tougher to skate than you could imagine despite being told by nearly everyone that you won’t believe it until you see it.

Heaven is a new photo book coming out that documents the “entire ascent and the downward spiral“ of legend that is Lennie Kirk. Lennie is currently in prison for 13 years on kidnapping charges. 

I don’t want people to ever think I’m exploiting him. I’m trying to give his life some dignity. He’s going to have a lot of time to look at this book and maybe this time he will try and change. What he did isn’t right, but by happenstance I was just there and able to document his life since he was 16 years old.

We’re a big fan of our friend John Freeborn and although I wasn’t able to film a trick for the friend’s section, I’m happy to share John‘s 41st Birthday Part from last week where he set out to make a part consisting of 41 tricks. Some time over this past year I found myself skating from Center City to South Philly and happened to encounter the Bing Streetside car filming in old city.

I chased the bing car from 2nd and Market to 2nd and Chestnut or Walnut but unfortunately only the first glimpse of me has been updated in Old City as seen above.

Fortunately that same day on the same skate I crossed paths again with the bing car at 4th and Christian where I was able to chase it down for the entire block until we got to Washington and we had to part and go our separate ways. That bit of Bing Streetside (it’s tough to resist the urge to write ‘google streetview’) has been updated and I put together a quick video of the stills the whole way down the block below.

You know us here at the haveboard.com offices are very much interested in the topic of the hoverboard actually becoming a reality? Well we’re getting closer, and apparently there is a kickstarter being prepared where you could purchase a hoverboard for $10,000. Start saving your loot, kids!

This Friday August 1st, Vans Presents ASA&CS First Friday with Oliver “Ollie” Wilson. Come on out from 6 to 9, check out the artwork, watch some skateboarding, and have a good time. In case you don’t believe me, check out the recap from June’s First Friday.

Phil Jackson has a show up this month with some other folks and the closing reception is this Sunday. It’s also a good opportunity to pick up’s final issue of Borderline Retard since cops shut down FDR on the fourth.

I’ll be doing a zine release at the closing reception for the show Temporary Autonomous Aggro Zone at Marginal Utility in Philadelphia on Sunday, July 27th from 4-6pm. The exhibition pairs my most recent work from the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark, NJ with Rick Charnoski & Buddy Nichols 1999 documentary film Fruit of the Vine. If you missed the opening or want to grab a zine in person, I’d love to see ya there.

The crew down at FDR has been hard at work on some crazy new stuff and they are raising money to get it done. Gino mocked up some shirts and I helped clean up the graphics while Awesome Dudes hooked up the rush order to get them ready for the fourth. Catch Gino tomorrow down at the park and pick one up for $20.

This week marks 16 years of haveboard being on the internet in some form, from geocities to “haveboardwillskate dot com” to haveboard.com! It also marks 16 years since I moved to Philadelphia. There have been a few lulls in publishing over the years but I’ve been getting back into the groove of posting more regularly.

Prior to that “have board, will skate…” was just a ‘zine me & my brother published out of Buffalo, NY. I appreciate everyone for their visits and contributions over the years. It’s still a little surreal when I meet people and they already know about haveboard.com. It’s a really great feeling knowing all the time and money I’ve spent to keep this thing going over the years wasn’t futile.

Stay tuned for some big plans I have coming for the site in the coming months but in the meantime, keep rolling!

The skatepark of Baltimore Phase 1 is complete and they are celebrating with a grand opening this Saturday! Shout out to Stephanie Murdock for all her hard work on this project. press release below:

Grand Opening
(Baltimore, MD) The Skatepark of Baltimore is holding an all-day, free grand opening event celebrating the completion of Phase I of a public, professionally-designed skatepark built at Roosevelt Park in Hampden on May 3, 2014 from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

For the past nine years, the all-volunteer nonprofit has advocated on behalf of the 30,000 skateboarders of Baltimore to build a world-class, concrete skatepark in the City of Baltimore. Thanks to its partnership with the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks (BCRP), the first phase of the skatepark, a 5,000 square foot concrete bowl and surrounding banks, was completed in February. The nationally-recognized firm, Artisan Skateparks, constructed the skatepark based on local community-led designs. Phase I of the $180,000 project was funded by donations made to the organization and matched by BCRP. Fundraising for Phases II and III are underway, with plans to complete the entire park by 2016.

Ernest Burkeen, BCRP Director, and Stephanie Murdock, Founder and President of the Skatepark of Baltimore, will lead opening remarks for an estimated crowd of 1,000 well-wishers at 12:30 p.m. Dave Duncan, Pro Skateboarder and voice of World Cup Skateboarding, will be the Master of Ceremonies for the day-long event.

Speaking at the ceremony will be members of the Baltimore City Delegation to the Maryland State Legislature (District 40) including State Senator Catherine Pugh, Delegate Shawn Tarrant, and Delegate Barbara Robinson. The ceremony will also be attended by members of the Baltimore City Council: Bill Henry, District 4, Carl Stokes, District 12, Nick Mosby, District 7, and Mary Pat Clarke, District 14. Representatives of the Office of the Honorable Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and the Office of Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young will also be in attendance.

The event will feature live music throughout the day and skate demonstrations by local and regional shops including: AWOL, Charm City, DC Wheels, and Vu Skate Shop. Activities will include a graffiti wall and skatepark design workshops. Refreshments will be available in a beer garden serving Flying Dog and food from area merchants.

Founded in 2006, the Skatepark of Baltimore, Inc. is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization dedicated to building a professionally custom designed, public destination concrete skatepark at Roosevelt Park in Hampden, a neighborhood located in northwestern Baltimore. The organization anticipates that once the park is completed, it will serve as many as 100 youth a day and up to 36,500 a year.

ATTENTION ALL SKATE TROOPS!!!

We are organizing a cleanup and maintenance day at FDR skate Park.

For 12PM Sunday, May 4, 2014

It is very important for all of us to get together and clean our Park this time to look good. In order for us to have and keep a good relationship with the FDR Park officials. So we may have some leverage with them to make demands like keeping the car shows outside of our skatepark and maybe even keeping the scooters out.

There is a park wide cleanup scheduled for May 10th. However on that day when the Park officials roll up on our Park and see that it is already clean. It will make a big impression on them on how we can organize and keep our Park right.

We know all this information because some skaters have been going to the FDR Park official meetings at the Swedish museum to represent the skatepark and skateboarders on some of the issues we have there.

I will be bringing plenty of extra large heavy-duty trash bags and gloves (and beer).

Some of the other items we are probably going to need is some push brooms.
Shovels, Rakes.
If someone has a heavy-duty leaf blower that would be awesome.
A wheel barrel to move some of the larger debris would also be very helpful.

We may be patching some holes. So if you have some extra concrete, tools, or vinyl patch lying around your place or want to buy, bring it down.

Let’s get this shit done and show the Park officials how we organize and handle our business!

Home-brewed beer and food will be for sale with proceeds going toward maintaining the warehouse bowl.

My hometown of Buffalo, NY now has a skate park thanks to Evergreen Skateparks (map link). I was in town visiting family this past weekend and I got to check it out. It’s pretty fun.

We’ve known the date of the Paines Park Ribbon Cutting for a little bit but the Ribbon Cutting has been officially announced with a time and some info on what’s going down that day. It looks like the park won’t be open to the public until 4, or probably a little bit after an elaborate production. Hopefully they keep the ceremonies short and don’t delay the opening of this place any longer.

Nocturnal‘s comeback is a great thing as we are once again treated to a video premiere at TMoms after last week’s Deathwish Premiere.

Tonight starting at 9 is the premiere of the Cliche Video. Word is they will start it at 9 and play it over and over all night. I like this format, as I tend to not make it to things on time.

I can’t believe I am even writing this post. Plenty of people never thought the day would come. Well the kickstarted goal was reached and the date has been set.

Paine’s Park Grand Openning is happenning on May 22nd, 2013!

I’ll leave you here with this video where the guy from La Colombe says what most of us skateboarders have been trying to convince Philadelphia and the general public to believe in for well over a decade.

PS: I’ll probably end up calling it River Park because even though it is a nod to Thomas Paine, I don’t want to be reminded of the PAIN it took for so many to finally get this park completed.

PPS: I’ve already seen people complaining about details of the park, like how it is a mixed use park and that it will be a disaster because all kinds of people will get in the way, etc. Save it. Love Park has seen skateboarders coexist with all kinds of people for years. If you honestly think that it being a mixed use park is going to be an issue, you’ve probably never skated, or at least never enjoyed skating Love Park.

Jake Brown landed a no handed 720 on the mega-ramp. Like the mega-ramp or not, this is still pretty damn impressive.

It’s also good to see Jake Brown land the big air on the vert after the landing instead of freefalling.

This saturday at 9PM Nocturnal will be premiering the new Deathwish Skateboards video at Tattooed Mom which is right across the street from Nocturnal’s new spot!

Skatejawn.com recently had a facelift and this friday they’ll be partying for the release of issue 17. They will also be premiering a video entitled Backstreet Atlas in which 2 homies skated from Boston to New York. There is an interview with them up at Quartersnacks.com and a preview below:

Around 1995 I got a new deck that had my most favorite graphic of all time on it. I believe it was a “Planet Earth” deck. As you can vaguely see above, it was a cartoon sun hugging a cartoon versions of all the planets in our solar system, including Pluto (back then it was still considered a planet).

Shortly after theses photos were taken this board was stolen from me outside of a hardcore show in Lockport, NY. It was the old, “Hey, mind if I try your board trick?” that I was still young and naive enough to fall for. I’ve always had the events of that day stuck inside my mind and always tried to find pictures of this graphic. I’ve described it to many people over the years with no luck of anyone every remembering the graphic even existed. I forgot I had taken disposable camera pictures of them.

Recently my brother found a box of old photos and sure enough these long forgotten pictures I took of this graphic have surface. I now have reference to show people with the hopes of confirming that someone else out there has seen this board. Even better would be to find out who the artist was and hopefully get a cleaner picture of this graphic.

What do you say, internet? Think you guys could help spread this post around and see if we can make this happen? Below is an approximately 17 year old picture of me holding said board. How’s that for a #throwbackthursday? Self bleached orange hair and extra baggy Tee and Shorts on a young haveboard!

Mark Suciu may be from Saratoga, CA but he has been dropping all kinds of east coast footage lately and his new Adidas video is no exception.

Filmed over a couple of trips to Philadelphia during the fall of 2012 and winter of 2013, Mark Suciu makes his official debut for adidas Skateboarding.

Check out some of the stills I pulled from the video to highlight Mark’s skating along with Chris Mulhern’s amazing skill in framing Philadelphia as a backdrop for this part. Great work!

• he just ended any debate on the “East coast is harder to skate than west coast”) has any truth to it. I feel it is more proving that Mark Suciu is a beast and isn’t going anywhere away from skateboarding anytime soon.

This post just backs up Chris’ quote on Theories:

I think Center City just looks so good in footage, so much better than most other cities. I think I’ve filmed/photographed City Hall a thousand times, but I still never get tired of looking at that building. And when you film a line at LOVE or Municipal, you have this amazing backdrop… you see that clock tower looming in the footage and you just know it’s Philadelphia.

Paine’s Park has been a long time coming and as you may have seen over this past winter, it’s finally coming to life.

The park is scheduled for a spring launch but for that to happen, $10,000 more needs to be raised. Franklin’s Paine has set up a kickstarter to getitdone. If a Veronica Mars movie can get funded for more than 2 million in a day I don’t think this should be an issue, especially considering there is already $2,311 raised toward that goal with 19 days remaining at the time this post was published.

I’m shooting for an old man comeback this summer so let’s spread the word and get Paine’s Park DONE!

I got some photos of the Paine’s Park Progress from Nick Orso yesterday. They’ve been spread around the “social medias” quite a bit by now but in case you missed them, here they are. One word: TRANSITIONS!

Chris Mulhern dropped his first project for his new brand “Caste” yesterday and like most anything Chris is involved with, it’s amazing. It’s a brilliantly edited Philadelphia piece with a mix of old hi8 footage (new AND old) along with HD footage. I highly suggest you read the entire interview with Chris about the project over at Theories of Atlantis:

I actually got the initial idea for the “Philadelphia Experiment” clip while working on this Berrics project with Gee. I thought it would be cool to fix up the same exact Hi8 camera that he shot on, and maybe just go out and make a little montage with it. But that idea for a little montage turned into a year long project… and I’m really glad it worked out that way.

With a cheesy headline, the Wall Street Journal reports on Private Skate Spaces. “I Say, That’s One Gnarly Grind You Just Executed”? Really? Make sure to watch the video as well. It doesn’t allow me to embed it here.
