Target The Moon // Acid Test by Roughion

Target The Moon and Acid Test are the 2 latest offerings from Welsh Electronic Duo Roughion. Coined the Chemical Brothers of Wales Music scene by Bethan Elfyn and showing a consistency in their productions to boot.

Their recent release Acid Appearance/Pune was picked up by a few Radio shows and was great to see that Pune got noticed.

Target The Moon is an emotive slice of the classic Roughion acidic house with classical elements thrown in. The strings remind me of some of The Hybrid earlier releases and the pulsating synths keep this track firmly on the dance floor.

Acid Test is the grower of these 2. After several listens I can’t but enjoy the unique approach that Roughion have to a sometimes over used ‘Acid House’ sound.

I would absolutely recommend you take a listen to both tracks and keep an ear to the ground for future works from both Roughion and the label Afanc.

Tensei are cueing up for a new release titled 'Speak Your Truth' (Release on July 14th) on Def Presse with two exquisite singles.

The first is the sun drenched soulful skit ‘Last Dance’ reminiscing over the “Golden Era” with the evolving, intricate sounds that Tensei have become known for. This is the scene it made me imagine on the first listen:

As the sun sets on the Chicago skyline a cadillac drives out of the city blaring the sounds of the ATliens. Last Dance sees the lyricists ADaD and Crl Crrll pay homage to the unique sounds of Outkast et al whilst Tensei borrow from the melting pot of rhythms that Chicagos house music scene has borrowed from throughout it’s evolution.

This one will become an ear worm and get you humming the chorus in no time at all.

In July 2019, The Heliocentrics played live as a 7-piece to the film 'Heaven and Earth Magic' by Harry Everett Smith.

The performance was part of the 27th edition of Curtas Vila do Conde international festival of cinema in Porto, Portugal. Playing a mix of improvised and written pieces the band brought the film to life with a new score in an intense, hour-long listen which matches the film’s alternate universe.

American, Harry Everett Smith (Portland, 1923 – New York, 1991), was one of the most inscrutable and offbeat American underground authors, visual artist, bohemian, mystic, record collector, and important figure in the Beat Generation and forerunner of the hippie movement, and widely known for his full length cutout animated film 'Heaven And Earth Magic,' using his collection of Victorian photographs. Delirious, excessive and hermetic, the film sums up his work's main features, summarising opposite conceptions such as figuration and abstraction, tradition and modernity.

Based in their warehouse in Bristol, they provided over 970 thousand meals last year to over 260 charities and members across the South West, not just Bristol, with this number now rising.

They are absolutely determined not only to stay open but to level up their organisation as far as they possibly can to stop the very worst happening. This includes families and children going hungry who are already living on the breadline and have no budget to stockpile, isolated elderly people who already rely on meals being delivered to their homes and the homeless.

While supermarkets seem empty, there are thousands of tonnes of surplus incredible food in the system, in part due to the hospitality sector closing. There is no other organisation in the region with the capacity to redistribute this food, and FareShare South West is well placed to deliver it straight to those that need it the most.

Just one incredible example of who they are supporting is the Bristol Food Union, a team of top Bristol chefs and food organisations who have created a new initiative to ensure the city's most vulnerable people are fed during the Covid-19 crisis. They're making meals for children leaving the foster care system, NHS care workers and supporting Caring in Bristol feed 500 rough sleepers. This is just one of the charities in one city, imagine the sheer scale of how many people they are supporting in the South West.

Standing in Ghost Notes on platform 5/6 waiting for the jazz train to arrive. Scott XYLO doesn’t mess about jumping to the stage with enthusiasm and energy that is sometimes hard to find in a support act.

His blend of afro beat with futuristic sound design, throwing down live edits of his material on Bristol based label Black Acre titled 'Find Us When You Get There'. Combining different styles to showcase his unique live set and sound palette.

After a short break and another train passing we welcomed Shigeto Ensemble trio to the stage. With the well revered beat maker and drummer released on Ghostly joined by longtime musical partners Marcus Elliot on tenor sax and Ian Fink on keys and synth bass.

To say my mind was blown is an understatement. Witnessing the three musicians gel on stage as carriages continued to pass by was nothing short of a jazz masterclass.

I was reminded of the old Blue Note records I became obsessed with when first discovering Jazz. Shigeto has a great skill in combining contemporary sounds with such a classic vibe and I dare to say that every single person in the audience was blown away by the dexterity of musicianship through out the always too short live set that they performed.

Both these acts are 100% worth catching live and booking for your city. Cardiff… I’m looking at you.

Doc P reviews... Pound for Pound by The Nextmen vs Gentleman’s Dub Club

Pound for Pound by Gentleman's Dub Club

Dropping like a giant sunshine bomb on June 22nd 2018 was ‘Pound for Pound,’ a 12 track collaboration album between the exceptional production and DJ duo The Nextmen, and the huge UK reggae dub band Gentlemans Dub Club. As if that wasn’t enough to get you hyped already, these heavyweights are joined by a football teams worth of all-star vocalists who bless the album with track after track of infectious lyrics and sun-kissed hooks.

The album kicks off with possibly my favourite tune on it, ‘Highs and Lows,’ a superb slice of soulful reggae featuring Joe Dukie of New Zealand’s Fat Freddys Drop. Bursting with love, positivity and thanks its a real gem of a track. ‘Spooky’ featuring Hollie Cook follows it with a dreamy, upbeat tale of haunted love, featuring a hammond riff that seems to nod towards the Doctor Who theme. Its a nice shimmery track, and it further establishes the kind of ‘pop vocal meets soundsystem’ style seen throughout the album.

Track three, we get to ‘Rude Boy,’ the first single off the album, and a bit of a monster hit, featuring Gardna of the now infamous Boom Sound collective out of Bristol. Gardna features on no less than 4 tracks on the LP, and its clear to see Boom Sound’s involvement, with the album also featuring Eva Lazarus, Kiko Bun, Parly B, and Jman, all artists affiliated with Boom Sound for some time.

Rude Boy is a huge anthemic ode to the joys of the dancehall life and it’s already been getting a lot of airplay across the BBC radio spectrum, with Radio 1, 6 Music and 1Xtra all playing it. You might be thinking ‘Radio 1?’ but do not fear, the track definitely bangs, with heavy bass, soaring horns and Gardna’s cheeky-chappy rudeboy tales that bubble and hype throughout.

‘See You Next Tuesday’ is the first of Kiko Bun’s three features, another track that’s been getting serious radio play as well, a breezy stepper of a tune about an ex, that is kind of, contagious, you might say. On ‘County Line’ and ‘Done it again’ Kiko and GDC’s front man Jonathan Scratchley delve into dabbling with danger and suffering the consequences of burning the candle and having a bit too much fun.

‘Holla my name’ features the unmistakable Charli 2na of the legendary hip-hop group Jurassic 5, and P Digsss from Shapeshifter, the New Zealand based DnB outfit. This is simply great, 2na-fish rapping wisdom on a mellow one-drop beat is a treat, and P Digsss sing-along chorus rings out, championing being there for one another at tough times in life.

This is followed by a love song of sorts in ‘Misty Eyes’ feat. Eva Lazarus. Eva is an absolute powerhouse of an artist, it’s not that often you find people who can both rap and sing to a high standard, but Eva seems to effortlessly smash both whenever required. Evidenced by her contributions on this album, as she sings on ‘Misty Eyes,’ goes in heavy and sings the hook on ‘Running Scared,’ and does a bit of both again on the final track on the album ‘Pristine’ with Gardna.

Speaking of ‘Running Scared’ this is the closest we get to a posse cut, with Eva, Gardna man and ‘the Yorkshire raggamuffin’ Parly B all letting rip on the mic. It’s also the most straight up dancehall stylee track, with some heavy staccato drum stabs and a more digital sound throughout.

And that brings us to the only track I haven’t mentioned yet, and I’ve left it to the end as its quite possibly the toughest tune on the album, featuring the rapper J-Man of Babylon Dead fame, amongst many other things. ‘One Horse Town’ sees J-Man in no mood for fools, as he tears through his bars with style, pausing only for Jonathan Scratchley’s chorus, warning alcomers not to ‘test this sound’ as ‘we run this town.’

This album is a tour-de-force, providing a showcase of Reggae, Dub, Hip-Hop, Dancehall, Ska and Roots styles with super-sharp production. It’s the perfect soundtrack for this summer’s heat-wave, with sparkling summery hooks, and beats that will get any sound-system humming out. If you ain’t already, I highly recommend you go and check this one out.

A quick background of the event from the rwan.cymru website:

“NAWR ANOIS is a series of 7 concerts, running from February to July 2018. The series showcases the diverse music of contemporary Irish, Welsh and international artists. The series aims to develop deeper connections between Irish and Welsh composers, sound artists and musicians.”

I attended the 6th event in the above series on Thursday the 6th of July, which featured Rachel Ní Chuinn on clarinet and Ableton Live and Mia Zabelka on violin with her myriad of pedals and also Ableton Live.

Like the rest in the series, it was held in the historic BBC Hall in Alexandra Road, Swansea, which is a fantastic space which you feel could tell you some interesting stories about past performances. The place hadn’t been open to the public for decades until very recently so it feels a privilege to be in such a secret location. You have to get someone to let you in as it has BBC studios downstairs, but don’t let that put you off as there was a friendly welcome to be had.

It was a small but appreciative crowd on a warm night of July and once the lights were dimmed, Rachel transported us into her world with simple, considered notes on her clarinet. It was worth being in the front row, as you were immediately drawn into a calm space, then you became progressively entwined with the layers of the dreamy soundscape which came out of Ableton Live. Three words to describe her performance - fragile, hypnotic and captivating.

Then after a short break, Mia took to the stage kicking off with her acoustic violin with contact pickup. It was obvious from the first few strokes of her bow that she knew the instrument inside out, as well as how to get the best out of it. Like Rachel, this expertise also dragged you into her world, but this time with a great deal of gusto.

Then came the second piece, which saw her take an electric violin to places I certainly didn’t expect, using what looked like chopsticks, her fingers and best of all, two bows at the same time. There were hints of heavy metal when she switched on her distortion pedal. She was the boss of the instrument from start to finish. Only one word is required to describe her performance - astounding.

Emotionally drained and dripping with sweat, Mia’s set came to a close and the audience were totally satisfied with what they had witnessed. Seeing her at the top of her game was a truly memorable experience for me.

The last in the present series of gigs is on the 24th of July which I certainly hope to attend and hope that more people get to experience experimental music. You won’t be disappointed.

MethLab Recordings have very kindly allowed us to present the already much revered first part of the Datacode Cyber Punk Operetta ‘Wraith Machine’ on EMW TV.

Having been picked up previously by VICE Creators Lab (https://creators.vice.com/en_us/article/ae5vwj/cyberpunk-cgi-opera-features-an-ai-having-a-mental-breakdown) and XLR8R (https://www.xlr8r.com/news/datacode-depicts-the-mind-bending-journey-of-an-ai-in-new-audio-visual-release) this intense and deeply satisfying work of art still remains current.

The story of an AI machine finding a conscience and having what us humans would define as a mental breakdown.

Italian artist Datacode creates a piece that questions are understanding of the capabilities of machines and their purpose. Spending 6 months in the math of Cycling '74 Max and Jitter and the waste grounds of consumer technology.

Repurposing old technology to tell the story of a new technology not yet realised.

AI is a big topic at the moment and many are afraid of the potentials of a totally autonomous and logic based eco system taking over the world.

What are your thoughts on AI and the future of technology?

This is a story of how offering to help turned in to a weekend of learning about a musicians life and the relationships that were built through growing up in the vibrant city of New York.

Seeing Hip Hop culture turn from an underground music to a world wide phenomena and sharing the stage with some of the architects of this music we have come to love.

Nevaris takes us on a historical and interesting journey through his musical roots. Linking together the Rocksteady crew, the birth of Hip Hop, P Funk, Latin percussion techniques, Reggae and Dancehall vocalist Hawkman, Talking Heads and legendary producer Bill Laswell all together through one man; Bernie Worrell (1944 - 2016).

This is a story that must be told and has to be listened to.
