සාගල පුර විදුහලට පරිගණක විද්‍යාගාරයක් ලබා දීමේ වැඩසටහන – 2013 මැයි මස 18 දිනට මූල්‍ය තත්වය

මේ සඳහා ඇස්තමේන්තුගත මුදල රු. 260,000 වන අතර මේ වන විට රු. 80,000ක මුදලක් එක් රැස් කර ගැනීමට හැකි වී ඇත. එයින් රු. 52,000 ක මුදලින් එක් පරිගණයක් මිලදී ගැනීමේ කටයුතු මේ වන විටත් සිදු වෙමින් පවතින අතර නුදුරු අනාගතයේදී එම පරිගණකය සාගල පුර විදුහලේ සිසු දරු දැරියන්ගේ අධයාපනය කටයුතු වඩාත් හොඳින් කරගෙන යාමට සහය වීම සඳහා පාසල වෙත ලබා දීමට අපි බලාපොරොත්තු වෙමු. ඉතිරි පරිගණක හතර සහ අනෙකුත් උපාංග අප වෙත මුදල් ලැබෙන ආකාරය අනුව මිළදී ගෙන පාසල වෙත ලබා දීමට අපි බලාපොරොත්තු දෙමු.

As I mentioned earlier, we are trying to provide a computer lab with 5 computers and other necessary equipments to Sagalapura College, Bingathalawa, Kandapola which is a rural college in Walapane education zone in Nuwara Eliya district,

Our target is to provide them with 5 new assembled computers. Mr. Athula Herath who is attached to the Education Office, Central province says that a computer with the following specification can be bought to a price of Rs. 52,000 from an institute in Kandy.

For your information, Kalpa Welivitigoda is a final year undergraduate in Faculty of Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Mr. Bandula Ranathunga is a project manager in Information Technology section in Ministry of Local Government and Provincial Councils while Mr. Athula Herath is a teacher who is actively contributing to hardware related matters at Information Technology Department in Ministry of Education.

When I visited Sagalapura College, I saw that grade 1 and 2 classes are conducted together as a single class, this was the same with grade 5 and 6 as well. Computer technology is not a dream for a school with a deficiency of teachers, we, not only provide computer facilities but also hope to conduct a series of events for teachers with the aim of providing them with basic knowledge on the subject. In this process, brothers and sisters who are undergraduates and willing to contribute are welcome to participate to make this effort a success.

You may not be able to contribute financially, still, spreading the word to an able friend or an institute is also considered to be a contribution that can be very easily done. We are happy to announce that we are willing to help schools as this in future as well.

Please note that the operating system used in these computers is Hanthana Linux.

නුවර එළිය දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ, වලපනේ අධ්‍යාපන කළාපයේ උශ්කර පාසලක ළමුන්ට පරිගණක අධ්‍යාපනයට අත හිත දෙන්න කැමති අයට අපිත් එක්ක එක්වෙන්න කියල ඇරයුම් කරනව.

පාසලේ නම තමයි සාගලපුර විදුහල, බිංගන්තලාව, කඳපොල.තේ වතු මැදින් ඉතා දුශ්කර ගමනකයන්න වෙනව මේ පාසලට. බස් එකක් නම් දැක්කෙ නැ මම යද්දි නම්. කොහොම උනත් අප්‍රේල් මාසය වන විට පරිගණක 4 හො 5ක් දෙන්න තමයි සූදානම.

භාවිත කළ පරිගණක නෙමෙයි අලුත් පරිගණක දෙන්නයි බලාපොරොත්තුව. මොකදපරිගණකයක් කැඩුනම ගොඩක් දුර එන්නත් ඒක හදාගන්න අවට කෙනෙක් නැ ඒ හරියෙ.

ඒවගේම මම කලින් මේ පාසලට යද්දි 1 සහ 2 වසර පංති එකට, 5 සහ 6 වසර පංති එකට දමා ඉගැන්විම කරන්න සිදු වෙලා තිබ්බෙ 1 සිට 11 වසරට ළමයි ඉන්න පාසලේ විදුහල්පතිත් තවත් ස්වේච්ජා ගුරුවරයෙක්ද ඇතුලුව මුලු ගුරුමඩුල්ල 9 දෙනෙක් උන නිසා.

එක් මැසිමකට 50,000 ලෙස ඇස්තමෙන්තු කලොත් ලක්ෂ 2,50,000ක් පමණ මුදලක් යාවි.

ඉතින් දන්න අය හැකි ඉක්මනින් වෙළඳපොලෙ දැනට core i3 ප්‍රොසසරයක් අවම වශයෙන්වත් දාල 2GB RAM එකක් සහිතව LCD/LED මොනිටර් සමඟ, එවගේම UPS සමඟ දෙන්න යන මුදල පිළිබඳ ඇස්තමෙන්තුවක් දෙනවද හනික.

දැනටමා දන්නා හිතවතුන් කිහ දෙනෙ සහයට එන නිසා අඩුම ගානේ අප්‍රේල් මාසෙ වෙද්දි එක පරිගණකයක් හරි දෙනව.

මීට පෙර වර්ශවල ලබා දුන් ලෙසම මෙවරත් 2013 වසර සඳහා වන සිංහල දිනදර්ශනය ICS සහ ගුගල් දිනදර්ශනයක් ලෙස සූදානම් කර ඇත. ඔබේ ජනප්‍රියතම දිනදර්ශන මෘදුකාංග සමඟ භාවිත කරබලන්න.

2013 වසර සඳහා ශ්‍රී ලංකා රජයේ මුද්‍රණාලයෙන් නිකුත් කළ දිනදර්ශනයට අනුකූලව මෙම දිනදර්ශනය සකසා ඇත. වෙසක් පුර පෝය දින හැර අනෙකුත් පුර පෝය දිනයන් සඳහා වෙළඳ නිවාඩු මෙවර දක්වා නොතිබීම මා විසින් දුටු කරුණක් වන අතර, එය අත්වැරදීමක්ද මෙතෙක් තහවුරු කරගත නොහැකි විය.

We are please to announce the 64-bit edition of the Hanthana Linux 17 today.
You can now download the Hanthana Linux x86_64 Live DVD ISO.

Hanthana Linux 17 (i386) released 3 weeks ago received overwhelming feedback from the existing and new users from all over the world with over 9000 downloads so far (over 15,000 altogether) and counting.

Many of our user were eagerly waiting for the 64-bit release, and we apologize for the delay in release. We hate to keep our community waiting but unavoidable technical challenges kept us from releasing this earlier.

You may find it hard to believe that Hanthana Linux released are build on personal laptop computer. And in Sri Lanka we are faced with less than 1Mbps internet connection speeds when uploading ISO files to the mirror servers.

Plans are underway to get a cloud based build server and we are in need of donations to get this project move forward.

Let us know if you willing donate a system with at least 3GB of RAM capacity, 50GB of Disk Space and root access to build next, release of Hanthana Linux. We will use this server only for build purpose.

Hanthana Linux 17 LiveCD with LXDE!

Hanthana Linux LiveCD, the newest member of the Hanthana Linux family comes out today. While our regular DVD release a complete software repository and latest 3D accelerated desktop, LiveCD will cater the the needs of low resource requirements, personalized software selection and simplicity .

You can now download the Hanthana Linux i386 LiveCD ISO.

LiveCD comes to you with all the goodness of Hanthana and Fedora version 17 including software such as Mozilla Firefox, LibreOffice Writer, LibreOffice Calc and LibreOffice Impress and loads of more lightweight applications plus LXDE. LXDE is an open source lightweight and customizable desktop environment for Linux, which is designed to work with older hardware however it also works perfectly well with modern 3D accelerated graphics hardware.

Hanthana Linux LiveCD version is launched in parallel to the Hanthana Linux 17 (Sithija) which was launched in 15th of September, 2012. Hanthana Linux 17 received overwhelming feedback from the users from all over the world including over 3000 downloads within the first week.

Hanthana Linux LiveCD is perfect for people who like to start up with a minimal system and configure and build it up to suit their needs. Following is a small list customization you can do.

Project began with the goals of Introducing and promoting Free and Open Source Software to the masses, especially to those with low technical knowledge, no access to the Internet or under privileged, and has now been deployed in a lot of schools, individuals, private sector offices, public sector institutes and government offices.

Hanthana Linux operating system was officially released on the 19th of September 2009 and by now the the number of copies distributed by the Hanthana Linux Project and individuals has counted up to the thousands. According to the SourceForge website, just one of the repositories that provides the distribution, there’s over 6000 downloads from all over the world. From those, at least 8 countries (excluding Sri Lanka) has downloaded a minimum of 100 copies and atleast 96 countries has at least one download.

This information excludes the local repository, LEARN, which is used by Sri Lankans as well as the Ibiblio repository.

The School Labs project which was inaugurated in 2012 by the Hanthana Linux project has already facilitated labs to 2 schools already and is planned to provide for more schools.

Schools in the Walapane educational zone of the Nuwara Eliya district and in the Kebithigollewa educational zone of the Anuradhapura district are next in this project and you too can join this project in facilitating IT knowledge to underprivileged school children in these areas.

Hanthana Linux is not just another Fedora respin. As a project it facilitates the deployment of Free and Open source Software amongst the everyday PC user as well as the localization of FOSS software,Documentation and provide training workshops as well.

Hanthana Linux is not a commercial product. Its a project for the betterment of the community by the community.

The Document Foundation announces LibreOffice 3.6 with a wealth of new features and improvements

Berlin, August 8, 2012 - The Document Foundation announces LibreOffice 3.6, the fourth major release of the best free office suite ever, which provides a large number of new features and incremental improvement over the previous versions. Innovations range from invisible features such as improved performance and interoperability to the more visible ones such as user interface tweaks, where theming has improved to more closely match current design best-practice. Wherever you look you see improvements: a new CorelDRAW importer, integration with Alfresco via the CMIS protocol and limited SharePoint integration, color-scales and data-bars in spreadsheet cells, PDF export watermarking, improved auto-format function for tables in text documents,, high quality image scaling, Microsoft SmartArt import for text documents, and improved CSV handling. In addition, there is a lot of contributions from the design team: a cleaner look, especially on Windows PCs, beautiful new presentation master pages, and a new splash screen.

LibreOffice is becoming increasingly popular in corporate environments. During the last months, several large public bodies have announced their migration to the free office suite: the Capital Region of Denmark, the cities of Limerick in Ireland, Grygov in the Czech Republic, Las Palmas in Spain, the City of Largo in Florida, the municipality of Pilea-Hortiatis in Greece, and the Public Library System of Chicago.

Dave Richards of the City of Largo has commented about the new release on his blog: "I have been testing LibreOffice 3.6 and am happy to see the progress. At this time all of our showstoppers are fixed and we probably will upgrade almost immediately when it's released. Nice work. CMIS is shaping up nicely. I'll be looking at 3.7 when it appears in the daily builds".

In France, the MIMO Working Group - the ministries of Agriculture, Culture and Communication, Defence, Education, Energy, Finance Interior and Justice - with a total of 500.000 end users, has certified LibreOffice for deployment on every desktop. At the same time, the OSB Alliance joined the efforts of German and Swiss cities and communities sponsoring development on the LibreOffice codebase.

Corporate users are joining consumers who quickly switched to LibreOffice. Giorgio Buccellati, Professor Emeritus of History and Near Eastern Languages at UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles), says: "LibreOffice is wonderful software. I am an avid user of the Hybrid PDF feature, which allows to exchange PDF files with all other users while preserving the possibility of editing the same document like a native file".

LibreOffice 3.6 has been developed by the growing community of hackers gathered around The Document Foundation, thanks to a friendly and welcoming environment, and the compelling Free Software ethos. The community has surpassed the threshold of five hundred developers providing new features and patches since the announcement of the project on September 28, 2010.

According to Ohloh, LibreOffice is the third largest developer community focusing on free software applications, after Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, and the largest to be independent from a single corporate sponsor. This result has been achieved in less than two years, and is now a benchmark for free software projects.

The Document Foundation invites power users, able to help iron out any final wrinkles, to read the release notes carefully, install LibreOffice 3.6.0, and report any problems. More conservative users should stick with LibreOffice 3.5. Corporate users are strongly advised to deploy LibreOffice with the backing of professional support, from a company able to assist with migration, end user training, support and maintenance.

Project 1: Sagalapura College, Biganthalawa, Kadapola
Walapane Education Zone, Central Province

This was meant to be our maiden School lab and we promised them to provide new computers. This project can be initiated as soon as the computers are available. College has enough room for a laboratory and local politician have promised to provide the electricity supply.

Summary: 5 Computers required to initiate the project.
Note: 5 new computers are urgently needed.

While the initiative to provide computer labs for schools project is going forward as planned, a project to bring PCs in the classroom for primary schools was held as a pilot project was held at the Malalgoda Siriseewali Primary School. Invest a few moments of your precious time to see the feedback and opinions of the students, teaches and parents when Hanthana was provided for them for the very first time...

Proving the saying “Only the Best for the children”, Hanthana Linux was introduced to the school children of the Malalgoda Siriseewali Primary school which is located in the Habaraadoowa Educational zone of the Imadhoowa Provincial Council within the Galle District, on the 30th of January 2012.

This school had been closed down for around one year and was re opened on the 16th of January 2012 under the 1000 Schools initiative. The school comprises of 15 students, Grade 1 class teacher, an English teacher and the principal.

The opening was made possible entirely due to the work done by the locals and the parents, the majority of whom are estate workers and private sector employees. Another special point to highlight here is that a family, who’s father is a labourer and the mother employed as a house keeper abroad, donated the PC which was worth about 12000/- Rupees. Upon inquiring from the mother, she said that had her child had to go to another school (due to this school being closed down), they will have to spend 1200/- a month for three wheeler charges and it totals out to around 12000/- a year and rather than spending that amount just for travelling, she’s happy to spend it on a PC for her child as well as other children for the their education.

Far thinking parents of this schools, such as her, were instrumental in getting Hanthana Linux installed and help the primary education. Also need to highlight that other parents who labour during the day, spend sleepless nights dedicated on maintaining and repairing the school buildings and equipment. These villages personify “lead by example” from the sacrifices they make to educate their children.

On the first day Hanthana was used for the primary education several things of note took place. As there was only one PC, the multimedia projector of the Habaraaduwa Educational Zone Office was used in the class to illustrate the theories for the various subjects using the Educational Software Packages that comes with Hanthana Linux. Especially the “Identifying Colours” lesson. In contrast to other occasions, the children partook the lesson most enthusiastically and constantly requested their teacher to allow them to use these software by themselves. This bought many a happy tear to the eyes of the Director of Education for the Habaradoowa Educational Zone, who attended the occasion, as well to the principal and the parents who were present.

“I’m hungry.. I’m hungry...” the lunch time grumble that comes up everyday were not be heard on this day as the kids were so engrossed with computer aided lessons.

The teachers agreed that teaching subject concepts and theory using the educational software were extremely easy as opposed to other methods. Also even after the school time was over the children were still in class on this day.

As the students are the focal point in the educational system within the school, a single PC and multimedia projector is hardly sufficient. There should be at least a PC for every four students for this to properly work out. In areas such as these where the majority of the people are low income earners, the parents hardly has the capability to sponsor the required number of PCs and equipment. External sponsorship is highly important for cases like these.

A qualitative school education system helps the whole nation to grow. Therefore the Hanthana Community is committed to the task of building the school IT education using Hanthana Linux through the Hanthana School Labs Project.We hope that you’ll join us.

හන්තාන පසල් පරිගණක විද්‍යාගාර ව්‍යාපෘතිය තුළදි පාසල තුළ පරිගණක විද්‍යාගාරයක් ස්ථාපනය කිරීමට ඇති සැළසුම එලෙසම ඉදිරියට ක්‍රියාත්මක වන අතර ප්‍රාථමික පාසල් සඳහා පංති කාමරය තුළට පරිගණකය රැගෙන යාම නියමු ව්‍යාපෘතියක් ලෙස මලල්ගොඩ පාසැලේදි සිදු විය. ඔබේ වටිනා කාලයෙන් එක් මොහොතක් ගතකර මෙම සටහන කියවා පාසලට හන්තාන ලබා දුන් පළමු දිනයේදීම දරුවන් ගේ ප්‍රථිචාරයන් සහ පාසැල් ගුරුමණ්ඩලය මෙන්ම දෙමාපිය අදහස් කෙරෙහි සවන් දෙන්න.

"හොදම දේ දරුන්ට" යන්න සනාථ කරමින් ගාල්ල දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ . ඉමදූව ප්‍රාදේශීය ලේකම් බලප්‍රදේශයේ හබරාදුව අධ්‍යාපන කොට්ඨායේ ගා/මලල්ගොඩ සිරිසීවලී ප්‍රාථමික විද්‍යාලයේ පලමු වසර දරුවන් සදහා අධ්‍යාපනික මෙවලමක් ලෙස හන්තාන ලිනක්ස් මෙහෙයුම් පද්ධතිය හදුන්වා දීම 2012 ජනවාරි මස 30 වන දින සිදු විය.

වසරක් පමණ වසා දමා තිබු මෙම පාසල නැවත 2012 ජනවාරි මස 16 වන දින පාසල් 1000 ව්‍යාපෘතිය තුල පෝෂිත පාසලක් ලෙස ඇරඹීම සිදුවිය . මෙම ඇරඹුම සදහා පූර්ණ දායකත්වය ප්‍රදේශවාසීන්ගෙන් සහ දෙමාපියන් ගෙන් ලැබීතිබුනි. බහුතරයක් දෙනා එදිනෙදා රැකියාවන් සහ පෞද්ගලික ආයතනවල රැකියා කරන්නන් වීම විශේෂත්වයකි. එසේම මෙහිදී දක්නට ලැබුන සුවිශේසී කරුණක් වූයේ එදිනෙදා සාමාන්‍ය කම්කරු රැකියාවක් කරන පියකු සහ විදේශ ගතව ගෘහ සේවා රැකියාවක් කර මුදල් උපයාගත් මවක ගෙන් යුත් පවුලක් විසින් මෙම පාසල සඳහා රුපියල් 12000/= පමණ වටිනා පරිගනකයක් පරිත්‍යාගකිරීමයි.

මෙහි දී එම මවගෙන් මෙම පරිත්‍යාගය පිළිබඳ කරුණුවිමසීමේ දී ප්‍රකාශ කරන ලද්දේ තම දරුවා වෙනත් පාසලකට යාමට සිදුවූවා නම් ඇයට මසකට ත්‍රිරෝද රථ ගාස්තු වශයෙන් රුපියල් 1200/=ක් පමණ වැය කිරීමට සිදුවන බවත් , වසරක දී රුපියල් 12000/= පමණ වැය කිරීමට සිදුවන බවත්ය. එබැවින් එම මුදල පරිගනකයක් මිළ දී ගැනීම සඳහා පරිත්‍යාග කර තම දරුවාට මෙන්ම අනෙකුත් දරුවන්ට ද එමගින් අධ්‍යාපනය ලබා දීමට ඉඩසලසා දීම තමාගේ අරමුණ බව පැවසූ ඇය ඒ පිළිබඳව ඉතාමත් නිහතමානීව සතුටුවන බව ද ප්‍රකාශ කලේය.

මෙවැනි දූර දර්ශී අදහස් ඇති ග්‍රාමීය ජනතාවක් මෙම පාසල හා සම්බන්ධවී සිටීම මෙම පාසල තුල හන්තාන මෙහෙයුම් පද්ධතිය ස්ථාපනය කරමින් ප්‍රාථමික අධ්‍යපනය සඳහා දායකත්වය සැපයීමට ප්‍රධාන කරුණක් විය. තවත් සමහර දෙමාපියන් දිවා කාලයේ තම එදිනෙදා සාමන්‍ය කම්කරු රැකියාව කර පසුව රාත්‍රිකාලයේ නිදිමරමින් පාසල් ගොඩනැඟිලි හා භාණ්ඩ සංවර්ධනය කිරීමට කැපවනු දැක ගත හැකිවිය.

පාසලේ ශිෂ්‍ය සංඛ්‍යාව 15 දෙනෙකු වූ අතර විදුහල්පති තුමා සහ 1ශ්‍රේණය භාර ගුරු තුමිය සමඟ ඉංග්‍රිසි විෂය සඳහා ගුරුතුමියක් ද සිටියහ. ප්‍රාථමික අධ්‍යාපනය සඳහා හන්තාන අධ්‍යාපනික මෘදුකාංග භාවිත කල පළමු දින අපට විශේෂ සිදුවීම් කීපයක් දැකබලා ගැනීමට හැකිවිය.එක් පරිගනකයක් තිබූබැවින් එදින හබරාදූව කොට්ඨාශ අධ්‍යාපන කාර්යාලයට අයත්ව තිබූ "මල්ටිමීඩියා" ප්‍රොජෙක්ටරය ආධාර කරගනිමින් දරුවනට මෙම අධ්‍යාපනික මෘදු කාංග මගින් විෂයට අදාල සංකල්ප ගොඩනැංවීම සිදුකරනු ලදී.එදින වර්ණ හදුනා ගැනීම යන සංකල්පය සංවර්ධනයට හන්තාන අධ්‍යාපනික මෘදුකාංග භාවිතා කරන ලදී.

මෙහි දී වෙනත් අවස්ථාවන්ට සාපේක්ෂව දරුවන් ඉතාමත් උනන්දුවෙන් පාඩමට සහභාගිවීම දක්නට ලැබුණි, ඉතාමත් විනෝදාත්මක ආකාරයෙන් දරුවන් පාඩමට සම්බන්ධවන අයරු දක්නට ලැබුණි. මෙම අවසථාවේ දී ගුරු තුමියගෙන් වරින් වර මෙම මෘදුකාංග භාවිතා කිරීමට ඹවුනට ද අවස්ථාව ලබාදෙන මෙන් ඉල්ලීම් කරනු දැකගත හැකිවිය. එය මෙම අවස්ථාවට සහභාගීවු දෙමාපියන් , හබරාදුව අධ්‍යාපන කොට්ඨාශ අධ්‍යාපන අධ්‍යක්ෂ තුමන් ,විදුහල්පති තුමන් ඇතුළු ප්‍රදේශවාසීන් ගේ නෙත් වලින් සතුටු කදුළු හැළුනු දසුනක් විය.

වෙනදා දිවා ආහාර වේල ආසන්නයේ දී "බඩගිනියි.....බඩගිනියි...” පවසන ලමුන් එමවේලාව පසු වුවද ඒ සඳහා දරුවන්ගේ අවධානයක් නොවී පාඩම සඳහා යෙමුවී සිටීම විශේෂ සිදුවීමක් විය.

තවද වෙනත් අවස්ථාවලට සාපේක්ෂව මෙම මෘදුකාංග භාවිතය තුලින් විෂය සංකල්ප ලබාදීම ඉතාමත් පහසු බව පංතිය භාර ගුරු තුමිය ද පැවසීය. තවද එදින දරුවන් පාසලෙන් බැහැර යන වේලාව පසුවීත් දරුවන් පංතියේ රැඳී සිටිනු දැකගත හැකිවිය.

ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් ශිෂ්‍ය කේන්ද්‍රීය ඉගෙනුම් ක්‍රියාවලියක් පාසල් පද්ධතිය තුල ක්‍රියාත්මක වන බැවින් තනි පරිගනකයක් සහ "මල්ටිමීඩියා" ප්‍රොජෙක්ටරයක් ඒ සඳහා ප්‍රමාණවත් නොවේ. එබැවින් අඩුතරමින් ළමුන් හතර දෙනෙකුගෙන් යුත් කණ්ඩායමක් සඳහාවත් එක් පරිගණකයක් තිබීම අත්‍යාවශ්‍යය. අඩු ආදායම් ලාභීන් බහුතරයක් වෙසෙන මෙවැනි ප්‍රදේශවල පාසල් සඳහා දෙමාපියන්ට සහ ප්‍රදේශවාසීන්ට එම අවශ්‍යතාවයන් ඉටු කරදීමේ හැකියාවක්ද නොමැත. එබැවින් මෙවැනි පාසල් සඳහා අනුග්‍රාහකයන් ගේ දායකත්වය ඉතාමත් වැදගත් තැනක් ගනී .

පාසල් අධ්‍යාපනය ගුණාත්මක ලෙස සංවර්ධනය කිරීම රටේ සංවර්ධනයට මහත් පිටුවහලක්වේ . එබැවින් හන්තාන ලිනක්ස් මෙහෙයුම් පද්තිය යොදා ගනිමින් තොරතුරු තාක්ෂණයෙන් පාසල් අධ්‍යාපනය සංවර්ධනය කරමින් රටේ ජනතාව සවිබල ගැන්වීම හන්තාන ලිනක්ස් ප්‍රජාවේ අරමුණයි. මෙම අරමුණ වෙනුවෙන් ඔබ අප හා එක්වෙනු ඇතයි අප උදක්ම බලාපොරොත්තුවෙමු.

For the 13th time the UNESCO celebrate the 2012 International Mother Language Day 'Mother tongue instruction and inclusive education'.

The date represents the day in 1952 when students demonstrating for recognition of their language, Bangla, as one of the two national languages of the then Pakistan, were shot and killed by police in Dhaka, the capital of what is now Bangladesh.

FOSS Session at Deyata Kirula, a success!

Free and Open Source Software awareness lecture series organized by ICTA and Hanthana Linux community in line with Deyata Kirula 2012 education and trade exhibition was conducted ICTA stall on 7th and 8th of February.

A lot of people participated at this event and the feedback was highly positive.

Participants consisted of students, teachers, parents and employees from the government and private sectors.

During the session, teachers got the chance to do a short lessons to their students using the education software in Hanthana Linux. At that point teachers were successful in getting used to the software during a short period of time of like 2 minutes and conducting the lesson to their students.

ICTA presented the students with prizes like shool bags and pens and refreshments were offered . Further, ICTA distrubuted the Hanthana Linux 15.5 LiveDVD free of charge.

Although it was scheduled to conduct only three sessions a day, a new session had to be started just after a session driven by the enthusiasm of the students and parents on Free and Open Source Software awareness lecture series.

Information Technology Branch of Ministry of Education also in their stall introduced Free and Open Source Software for the second time throughout the exhibition.

Hanthana community pays the gratitude to Mr. Bandula Ranathunga who supported at the very first step to join Deyata Kirula exhibition, Ministry of Information Technology, team from ICTA, Mr. Athula Pushpakumara, Mr. Wasantha Deshapriya, Mr. Mahesh Kuragama, Mr. Priyanka without whom this won't be a reality and finally to Mr. Sujith Jayasooriya who coordinated and supported Hanthana community.

පාසැල් දරුවන් සඳහා පාසැල් පොත් බෑග්, පෑන් වැනි තිලිණ මෙන්ම කෙටි සංග්‍රහයක් ලබා දීම ද ශ්‍රී ලංකා තොරතුරු තාක්‍ෂණ ආයතනය විසින් සිදු කරන ලදි. එමෙන්ම හන්තාන ලිනක්ස් 15.5 DVD තැටි නොමිලේ බෙදා දීමද ශ්‍රී ලංකා තොරතුරු තාක්‍ෂණ ආයතනය විසින් සිදු කරන ලදි.

දිනකට වැඩසටහන් 3 ක් පමණ කළ හැකි යැයි මුලින් සැලසුම් කළ ද, එක් වැඩසටහනක් අවසන් වෙත්ම තවත් වැඩසටහනක් ඇරඹීමට සිදු වුයේ පසල් සිසුන් සහ ප්‍රදර්ශනයට පැමිණි දෙමාපියන්ගේ නිදහස් සහ විවෘත මෘදුකාංග පිළිබඳ හදුන්වා දුන් වැඩසටහන් සඳහා තිබූ උනන්දුව නිසා වෙනි.

ගණිතමය ගැටලු ඇසුරෙන් නිමවා ඇති TuxMath ක්‍රීඩාවෙන් ජයගත් පාසල් සිසුන් දෙදෙනෙක්..

Hanthana Linux team, with the collaboration of the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka, is about to a conduct an awareness event on Free and Open Source Software and Hanthana Linux on 7th and 8th of February at "Deyata Kirula 2012" Education and Trade exhibition which is held at Oyamaduwa, Anuradhapura in line with the 64th Independence Day. Lectures series which 100 people can participate at a time, opportunity to use free and open source software installed on computers and people will get the chance to get their queries answered.

இலங்கைத் திருநாட்டின் 64 வது சுதந்திர தினத்தை முன்னிட்டு அனுராதபுர, ஓயாமடுவே பிரதேசத்தில் நடைபெறும் “தேசத்திற்கு மகுடம் 2012″ வருத்தக, கல்வி கண்காட்சியில் கட்டற்ற மென்பொருள் மற்றும் ஹந்தான லினக்ஸ் பயன்பாடு குறித்து விளக்கமளிக்கும் பயிலரங்க நிகழ்வொன்றினை ஹந்தான லினக்ஸ் குழுவினர் எதிர்வரும் பெப்ரவரி மாதம் 7 ஆம் 8 ஆம் திகதிகளில்.

TDF to base community-driven foundation in Berlin, Germany

Berlin, February 1st, 2012 - The Document Foundation (TDF) today announces that it will base its community-driven entity in Berlin, in the legal form of a German Stiftung. This kind of structure is recognized worldwide as a legally stable, safe and long term entity, providing the ideal cornerstone for the long term growth of the community and its software.

"For the first time in 12 years, the development of the free office suite finally takes place within an entity that not only perfectly fits the values and ideals of the worldwide community, but also has this very same community driving it. The future home of the best free office suite is built and shaped by everyone who decides to participate and join. And the best is: Everyone can contribute and is invited to do so, to further strenghten the free office ecosystem", says Florian Effenberger, Chairman of the Board at TDF.

Charles-H. Schulz, one of the founders and a member of the Board of Directors, adds: "Berlin is the icon of reunification and unity, and as such is the ideal home of our global community, aggregated around the objective of creating the best free office suite ever. We expect to be legally established during the next weeks, as soon as the last details of the formal process have been finished."

"After many months of work in close cooperation with the authorities, we were able to keep the spirit of the community bylaws, and incorporate them into legally binding statutes, that ensure the promises that TDF has made in its manifesto", says Michael (Mike) Schinagl, a Berlin-based lawyer and contributor to various free software projects, who has been driving the legal aspects of the foundation set-up from the very beginning.

In addition, TDF currently publically discusses ways for local entities to join and participate, and operative entities are currently being created to carry on special projects.

Founder of the Stiftung will be the German nonprofit association Freies Office Deutschland e.V., formerly OpenOffice.org Deutschland e.V., that so far acted as interim legal entity. "We congratulate the community for having achieved this key step, and are proud of having played a key role in setting up The Document Foundation. Our association is looking forward to working closely with the new entity and acting as a gateway between TDF and private as well as enterprise users", says Thomas Krumbein, Chairman of the Board at Freies Office Deutschland e.V.

Hanthana 15 with revolutionary Gnome 3

The latest release of Hanthana Linux (a Fedora remix), Hanthana Linux 15 was released!. This marks the fifth release of Hanthana Linux project. First release was on 19th September 2009 in parallel with Software Freedom Day celebrations.

It is the strong community around Hanthana Linux Project that enabled us to release the fifth consecutive release. Hanthana 14 (Gagana) is used in more than 15 schools (more than 500 computers) in the island and one being a primary school is of importance. Further, the computer laboratory with 80 computers at Ruwanpura National College of Education is facilitated with Hanthana Linux.

Active forum for Hanthana Linux community and the recently released Hanthana Community Magazine play a major role in penetrating information and knowledge to the community. More than 2000 Hanthana Linux DVDs have being deployed around the island and more than 1000 have participated in practical training sessions and workshops. More than 25 computers in several departments of the National Institute of Education are installed with Hanthana Linux and 5 teams have successfully completed their practical training. Further, three days training session was conducted at the Sri Lanka Navy base for 35 naval employees rated to IT with the aim of training them to do day to day activities as well as software development using Hanthana Linux.

ICT Branch of Ministry of Education introduced Hanthana Linux to the public at the Deyata Kitula 2011 exhibition at Monaragala and at the educational exhibitions at Southlands College and information technology exhibition at Ruwanpura National Institute of Education (around 500 copies were distributed), public were allowed to use Hanthana Linux on the site and educated. Dheeranandha Nanasala took the initiative as the first Nanasala to introduce Hanthana Linux to rural areas.

Teachers in the Hanthana community are so advanced that they conduct practical training sessions not only for their students but also to fellow teachers including the principal. Sri Piyarathana Madya Maha Vidyalaya, Gonigoda of Katogasthota Educational Zone is the best example.
We recall with great respect the opportunity of having a stall for free at IFO+ exhibition by the School of Computing University of Colombo and at the exhibition by the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna to spread the word among public. Further, we recall with great respect, the Ministry of Education, using Hanthana Linux in school computer laboratories when they first served schools with free and open source software.

Bundling of recently introduced Gnome 3 is special in Hanthana 15. As you know Hanthana Linux is based on Fedora and Hanthana Linux 15 is based on Fedora 15. But several enhancements than Fedora have been introduced in using the desktop, places menu, ability to shutdown without any additional key strokes, ability to use themes by default are some of them. With this release a user guide for the desktop and a keyboard layout for Tamil introduced by ICTA are included.

We are happy to announce that Hanthana Linux project was appreciated at the recently held e-swarnabimani award ceremony.

Hanthana Linux project may merely viewed as an operating system, but it is really a project of empowering the community. This enables the members of the community to improve their knowledge and skills by contributing back to the project via the elements which are for the betterment of the community themselves.

We have proved that information technology experts as well as the ordinary public of the country can contribute to information technology services. The default wallpaper of Hanthana 14 (Gagana) was from a professional photographer of Sri Lanka, a teacher serving as a physical education instructor (PEI) in a school represented Hanthana Linux at the recently held information technology exhibition at Karandeniya Madya Maha Vidyalaya. He was merely a Hanthana Linux user some time back but now, he not only represent Hanthana Linux at community workshops but also writes technical articles. Although they do not get any proper recognition for their skills and knowledge at their service places, in community services, recognition and social praise is unavoidable.

Users of Hanthana Linux project which is with the sole aim of the betterment of the community, range from a grade one student to adults.

The next release of Hanthana Linux, Hanthana Linux 16 (Dharani) is scheduled to be released in 2012.

To conclude… Our aim is to educate people in the country about free and open source software and increase their usage. We are happy to announce that we hope to improve on this purpose in the year 2012.

Lets visualize your web pages in 3D with Firefox

Tilt is a Firefox addon that lets you visualize any web page in 3D. A new update is available, coming with more developer-oriented features. Try the addon.

To start Tilt hit the CTRL+SHIFT+M or go to Web Developer > Tilt in the tools menu. :)

Since the first alpha version of Tilt was announced (a Firefox extension focused on creating a 3D visualization of a webpage), a lot of work has been done to add a great number of developer-oriented features. These focus on debugging the structure of a webpage, inspecting styling and attributes for each node and seamlessly refreshing the visualization when the DOM structure changes or after contents of document are repainted.

Solve nesting problems

Tilt is useful when searching problems in the HTML structure (like finding unclosed DIV elements for example) by providing the extra third dimension, layering each node based on nesting in the DOM tree. Stacks of elements visually represent branches in the DOM, and each node can be inspected for the inner HTML contents, its computed CSS style and the attributes.
Clicking anywhere on the visualization highlights a color-coded rectangle surrounding the corresponding node. Double click shows up the source preview for that node. Tilt also tries to show the most relevant information when needed (one is most likely to inspect the attributes of an input, button or image element, for example, but can easily switch between HTML, CSS and attributes view at any time).
