Join us for a celebration of creative recycling in Genesee County!

Featuring Free Food, Make-and-Takes, Upcycled Craft Vendors, Recycling Information, Sawmill Demonstration and Much More!

The Creative Recycling Fair is also the official launch of ReMade, a brand new creative recycling partnership between Genesee County Habitat for Humanity and Flint Handmade!

ReMade collects scrap material from factories, businesses and offices and provides it in bulk and kit form at affordable prices to the general public for artistic, educational and entrepreneurial purposes.

ReMade also offers classes, demos and other hands-on learning activities for people of all ages to engage in active creative recycling.

The Creative Recycling Fair was generously organized as a Community Day by an AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) team from Vinton, Iowa. The "N" Triple "C"s are currently residing in Flint and working with Habitat to build decent, affordable homes for low-income families in Genesee County. For more information about AmeriCorps NCCC programs, visit the website at www.americorps.gov/nccc.

Lift Off - Shake Yo' Tailfeather!

From their Facebook Event page at https://www.facebook.com/events/278387802305350/

LIFT OFF is our monthly celebration of local artists & performers. On the final Friday (or Saturday) of every month, we showcase the talent of Ann Arbor and the surrounding areas with an artist's gallery, performers of all kinds (usually the instructors of upcoming workshops at the A2 Aviary), local products to eat and drink, an open bar, and dance party.

Special feature this month: Bird Call Gallery

Curated by Lizzie Lottman, the show includes art work inspired by birds, wings, feathers, and flight by numerous local artists:

Sophia Fenby

Carol Hannah

B.P. LeGualt

Sherri Lemire

Rick Lieder

Ted Lottman

Molly Marden clever9design

Arian Monceaux

Margaret Mosey

Philip Painter

Get there early, there will be a lot to see, and if you still have those wings you got for a Halloween costume and never wore again, now is the time to bust 'em out.

Gallery viewing opens at 8pm.
Performances begin at 9:30pm.

Then stay for more snacks, drinks, and a dance dance party party with our resident dance facilitator DJ Discordelia.

$10 for art, food, booze, music, AND a show!

*If you are interested in performing, showing, or donating products/time any LIFT OFF event, please email us at contact@a2aviary.com

Small Craft Big Screen

Handmade Nation is the definitive portrait of the indie craft movement. So we’ve chosen it to kick off our Big Screen, an irregular series of crafty films. On Saturday, June 8, we’ll screen Faythe Levine’s 2009 documentary feature at Detroit’s historic Trumbullplex Theater. And we’ll include all the extras that make a day at the movies special: popcorn, cartoons, and discussion.

As you meet the people behind the crafts, you find that they tend to have personalities as vivid as their work. On Saturday, May 11, we’ll host two of the Midwest craft scene’s most vivid personalities: Lish Dorset and Betty Floored. Lish will talk quilting 101, and guide us though a simple project – a mug rug! Betty will fill a pop-up shop with her retro-styled skirts, aprons, pillows, and bags. And of course, there will be free coffee, tea, and homemade vegan baked goods for everyone. It’s a day to relax, learn, and shop, while getting to know some of the people who make our local craft community so special.

From the Facebook Event Page (http://www.facebook.com/events/120786994775787/):

Our Winter Tour was a lot of fun, but we’re happy to be coming home. For two decades, the Trumbullplex has been a home for DIY in Detroit. And for over a year, it’s been the home port for our social craft Saturdays. On April 13, it can be your home away from home! Courtney Fischer will be there, with a skillshare on making silverware into garden markers. Marcy Davy of All Things Grow will be there, with a pop-up shop filled with nature-themed screen prints. And of course we’ll be there, with free coffee, tea, and homemade vegan baked goods. If you’d like to spend a Saturday afternoon crafting, shopping, eating, and socializing in a historic and dynamic space, then you should be there too!

Art Fair Fever

From the Facebook event page:

Since there are still a couple of months before local art fairs start up, we decided to get a jump start on the fun! Join us for our Art Fair Fever open house on Saturday, March 2, 2013 from 10-6.

Have you ever wanted to see the face behind your favorite painting, or chat with the jeweler who crafted your favorite necklace? Some of our artists will be hanging out throughout the day & they're excited to meet you too!

Most of our artists will be offering 15% off their artwork, so if you've had your eye on something, don't miss out on this great deal.

New this year! Help us spread our love of the arts. We're collecting supplies for Arts & Scraps, a wonderful local organization that provides recycled materials to arts programs for people who would not otherwise have access to them. Simply bring in two or more items from the list of suggested donations on their website & make a purchase, and we'll give you a cute clip magnet to say "thanks." [ https://www.artsandscraps.org/ ]

There’s always one last flurry of snow before the end of Michigan’s winter. And there’s one last flurry of social crafting before the end of our Winter Tour! On Saturday, March 9, we’ll visit Woodward Avenue Brewers in Ferndale. We’ll learn to make bottle cap rosettes with Amber Sarker of handleber. We’ll shop for rock ‘n’ roll stained glass, handmade by Carey Gustafson of Glass Action! And we’ll share free, homemade vegan baked goods. With its hot food, fresh beer, and relaxed atmosphere, the WAB will be the ideal place to wait out winter’s final flurry.

And it’s when we’ll be hosting an event in a space that’s completely new to us: flower and garden shop pot & box. So we’re looking forward to an adventure! On the other hand, it’ll be the kind of cozy Saturday you’ve come to expect from Small Craft. We’ll make book sculptures with our old friend Amanda Schott of dang argyle. We’ll enjoy the soothing scents of the Cellar Door Soap Co. pop-up shop. And of course, we’ll share plenty of free coffee, tea, and homemade vegan baked goods. Whether you’re a Small Craft regular, or you’re joining us for the first time, we’re glad to have you along for a cozy adventure.
