She first visited Peru in 1999 and fell in love the country ever since then. It started with $100 initial investment on supplies, and she did not foresee it to grow to its current success.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">"The business now employs fifteen women and has been transforming lives as these women discover new talents in card design and business management, as well as being uplifted by the dignity that comes with work and provision for your own family."</span><br /><span style="font-family: arial;font-size:130%;" ><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">Meet Azucena:</span></span><br /><p style="text-align: justify; font-family: arial;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DgnTVZkxkdA/S5B8mt4wKiI/AAAAAAAAAmc/3bXmkjCEVTM/s1600-h/P1110130.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 177px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DgnTVZkxkdA/S5B8mt4wKiI/AAAAAAAAAmc/3bXmkjCEVTM/s200/P1110130.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5444988954085435938" border="0" /></a><span style="font-family: arial;font-size:100%;" >Azucena has worked with <a href="https://www.perupaper.com/cart/">Peru Paper Co.</a> from its beginnings in 2005. Such work was very dangerous to her and her children, who had to accompany her, playing on the side of the road while she worked. Now with Peru Paper Co., her work allows her to be home with her children, protects them from harm, and provides stable income for their needs.</span></p> <p style="text-align: justify; font-family: arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;">Because of the amount of time she has worked with the business, Azucena has developed into a great manager. I'm in love with everything she's creating. Helen shares my love for great textile products ranging from personal accessories to awesome home dec items, especially her incredible lamps!<br />So enough of my gushing, and welcome to Helen Rawlinson's studio!<br /><br />Kristina</span></span></span><span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0); font-weight: bold;"><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><br /></span></span></span></span><br />Who is Helen Rawlinson?</span></span><br /><br />My Twitter profile says, ‘lamp lady, printer, mum’, not necessarily in that order but it just about sums me up. I’ve made lampshades for years, selling to independent retailers and departments stores throughout the UK and abroad. I hand print the shades with my own designs onto a translucent parchment style paper. I then add machine stitching to enhance lines and shapes, which, once lit, gives a lovely dotted detail. The shades are teamed with simple turned wooden bases. All the manufacturing side is done in the UK.<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/washwhendirty/3992334258/" title="inside the artist's studio: helen rawlinson by washwhendirty, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2545/3992334258_6e33c3594a.jpg" alt="inside the artist's studio: helen rawlinson" height="255" width="500" /></a><br /></div>Aside from this, I’ve recently been having a great time with printing on to fabric and now make a small range of bags and purses plus a fun home décor / accessory range for kids.<br /><span style="font-size:130%;"><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">When did you start hand printing?</span></span><br />Textile design and making has been my full time occupation since leaving the Royal College of Art, London, UK, with an MA in embroidery in 1993. My previous training was print design.<br />In 2006 I was lucky enough to find a fabulous studio at a converted Chocolate Factory, very near to where I live in Hackney, East London. A beautiful property owned by painter, Keith Ashley. He transformed it into 25 studios for artists and designers. I love it and have been there ever since.<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/washwhendirty/3992333756/" title="inside the artist's studio: helen rawlinson by washwhendirty, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2434/3992333756_8b988c9ab4.jpg" alt="inside the artist's studio: helen rawlinson" height="352" width="500" /></a><br /></div>My son Stanley was born in 2005 after almost giving up hope of ever having children. Since then I‘ve taken the best part of 4 years off to enjoy being a full time mum. During this time, I’ve managed to keep the studio going and I’m just starting to find my feet again in the world of work, ready for when Stanley starts school next year.<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/washwhendirty/3991575167/" title="inside the artist's studio: helen rawlinson by washwhendirty, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2487/3991575167_f5df4b4d7e.jpg" alt="inside the artist's studio: helen rawlinson" height="247" width="500" /></a><br /></div><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">What inspires you? </span></span><br /><br />I never felt very confident with a paintbrush but instead, I fell in love with scissors and paper.<br />I’ve always worked with collage, piecing things together, cutting and pasting, so I’m inspired by anything to do with that style of work, both modern and classic. There is a strong trend for paper cutting at the moment and I love it all. Vintage style is constantly inspiring. From picking up finds in car boot sales and junk shops, my ideas are often drawn from old ceramics and retro toys, printed ephemera and children’s book illustration from a bygone era. Being able to spend plenty of time in the library with Stanley, I’m always happy to come home with loads of books for him and me.<br />I used to do a lot of pencil drawing on my travels and carried a sketchbook with me all the time. I then turned these into screen prints for my collage work, making visual diaries of my time away. I’d love to go back to this more illustrative style when I have time, but at the moment I’m snapping with my camera. There are so many patterns in everything around us, so design ideas pop into my head all the time. I make little scribbles and take pictures to remind me later on.<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/washwhendirty/3991575067/" title="inside the artist's studio: helen rawlinson by washwhendirty, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3473/3991575067_4dde9a528a.jpg" alt="inside the artist's studio: helen rawlinson" height="163" width="500" /></a><br /></div>I’m excited to be back at the print table again and have turned my attention to fabrics, initially using the extensive range of designs from my lighting collection with a few new designs along the way. I’m trying lots of things out, printing and making a variety of home décor and fashion accessories. I’ve been having fun with kids’ stuff too. All the clutter and play that comes with children is happily creeping into my work, hence the ABC and Shapes and Things range!<br />I’m still producing the lampshades, although it’s not easy doing batch production on a part time basis so I’m reducing my lines somewhat and making more time for new ideas. Nevertheless, I love to play with the effects of light on paper, together with print and stitch, so I’m sure it will continue to engage me for some time to come.<br /><span style="font-size:130%;"><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">How does one acquire your designs? </span></span><br /><br />The online boom has allowed designers and makers to show their work to a much larger audience from when I first left college and thanks to Etsy I really love the fact that people are starting to buy my work from all across the globe!<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/washwhendirty/3992334110/" title="inside the artist's studio: helen rawlinson by washwhendirty, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3453/3992334110_6f38fbd756.jpg" alt="inside the artist's studio: helen rawlinson" height="344" width="500" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: left;">My whole collection of lamps and shades at <a href="http://helenrawlinson.com/">helenrawlinson.com<br /></a><a href="http://helenrawlinson.bigcartel.com/">UK Shop</a> for all my current products in stock.<br /><a href="http://www.helenrawlinson.etsy.com/">World Shop</a> and where you can also have fun choosing my fabric panels for your own bit of crafting DIY.<br />Read more about my studio time and art for fun on<a href="http://helenrawlinson.blogspot.com/"> my blog</a>.<br />You can also find me here: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/helenrawlinson/">flickr</a>, <a href="http://twitter.com/HelenRawlinson">twitter</a>, <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/London-United-Kingdom/Helen-Rawlinson-Design/76239127308?ref=nf">facebook</a><br /><br /></div></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/4379273988981914326-1993214265990407537?l=handmadebykristina.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>kristinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07987815517013763887noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4379273988981914326.post-50109921825230283572009-09-24T01:00:00.001-05:002009-09-24T01:00:02.028-05:002009-09-24T01:00:02.028-05:00inside the artist's studio: made by swirly girl<span style="font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 102, 0);font-family:courier new;" ><span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">Who is Made by Swirly Girl?</span><br /><br /></span></span></span></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_DgnTVZkxkdA/SrrPsHYnN-I/AAAAAAAAAlk/LkESdON4pdM/s1600-h/3948727613_6cbcba6f21_m.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 207px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_DgnTVZkxkdA/SrrPsHYnN-I/AAAAAAAAAlk/LkESdON4pdM/s400/3948727613_6cbcba6f21_m.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5384844661278324706" border="0" /></a><span style="font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-family:courier new;">Made by SwirlyGirl is the name of the business I started about 4 years ago after much prodding from my husband and friends to sell my cards instead of just giving them away. The name was created after my husband made a remark about the doodling I would do while I was on the telephone. I added the "made by" because there was an existing business with the name of Swirly Girl. If by "who is Made by SwirlyGirl?" you mean "who is Laurie LeBlanc-Rickaby?", that is a little bit longer and more complicated answer, but in a nutshell, I would have to say: I am a mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend, former professional ballet dancer, choreographer, and presently a ballet teacher, who feels closest to my higher power when I am expressing myself through creating.<br /><br /></span></span></span><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/washwhendirty/3948758611/" title="made by swirly girl by washwhendirty, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2577/3948758611_aa899713de.jpg" alt="made by swirly girl" height="353" width="500" /></a><br /></div><span style="font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);font-family:courier new;" ><span style="font-weight: bold;">What inspires you? </span></span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:courier new;">Color, texture, movement, music, lighting, nature, art in any form inspires me...I'm a very visual person and nearly all of my inspiration comes from something I see, but if it is coupled with music, there is nothing better than that! I've always had the need to create as far back as I can remember. As a small child, I painted sea shells and made pot holders and sold them door-to-door. At least I TRIED to sell them. (In all honesty, I think I sold 2 shells and one of them was to my father!) I've crocheted, knit, embroidered, sewed, needlepointed and cross stitched, learned some Native American beadwork, learned basket weaving, floral design, wreath making, faux finishes, covered photo albums and frames, made boxes and books, tried scrapbooking, jewelry making, quilting, and a few other arts and crafts. This is the first one that has kept my attention long enough to actually think about starting a business around it. (Actually, that isn't true. In the 80s, I did some consignment sales and a couple of craft shows with a couple of other things, but I did get bored with them fairly quickly!) What I love about making cards and photo art is that I can change it anytime I want to. I can create a new line, drop a line, change the direction of a line...I can't run out of things to photograph and there are so many things I can do with each photo that I feel I can keep this up indefinitely! (Plus, it satisfies my need for immediate gratification, being a quick process from photographing to packaging the finished card!)</span><br /><span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);font-size:130%;" ><br /></span></span></span><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/washwhendirty/3949554398/" title="made by swirly girl by washwhendirty, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3526/3949554398_aee249b9c9_o.jpg" alt="made by swirly girl" height="623" width="500" /></a><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=20592996">Sun Daze from Made U Look Line</a><br /><br /></div><span style="font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(204, 0, 0);font-size:130%;" ><span style="font-family:courier new;">When did you start designing cards?</span></span><span style="font-family:courier new;"><br /><br />The first cards that I designed were about 9 years ago, I think, when there wasn't much disposable income and I refused to spend $4 or $5 on a card to send someone that they were just going to throw out after a few days, most likely. I thought:"For $5, I can buy the supplies to make many cards and those that receive them will actually want to keep them, too!" They were made from torn and cut handmade papers on cardstock with some beads, buttons, or ephemera added for texture. I then began working with gorgeous fabric remnants that a close friend would give me. When I got my first digital camera and began to experiment with a couple of photo programs, another door opened for me and the world was suddenly a new and exciting place to discover! My first cards came out of a happy mistake that became the direction I have continued to expand, my Made-U-Look line. Some time later, I discovered other photo software programs and began developing my Kaleidoscope line, followed by En Pointe, Whirly Girl, and Plein Air, in that order.<br /><br /></span></span></span><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/washwhendirty/3949571480/" title="made by swirly girl by washwhendirty, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2526/3949571480_6545d2cacf_o.jpg" alt="made by swirly girl" height="500" width="500" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=vl_other_2&listing_id=22364605">Spanish Dance Class from En Pointe Line<br /></a></div><span style="font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-size:130%;"><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(204, 0, 0);font-family:courier new;" >Where did you get your training?</span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:courier new;">Training? That makes me smile...I've taught myself how to use my photo programs and camera and how to use my computer and the internet. Other than that, it's all just a big happy experiment. I'm moved to create; I create; I like it or I don't like it; I do it again and take what I learned with me into the next attempt;...it's just about trusting myself and believing that if I like the way something has come out, there will probably be others who like it, too. But, even if there aren't, the process is not motivated by pleasing anyone besides myself when I create, anyway. The process is worthwhile just because I'm moved to begin it. If others like it, too, that is icing on the cake!<br /></span></span></span><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/washwhendirty/3949583948/" title="made by swirly girl by washwhendirty, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3526/3949583948_229bc25542_o.jpg" alt="made by swirly girl" height="623" width="500" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=21917303">Creature Comforts Matted Photo Print</a><br /></div><span style="font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><br /><br /><span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);font-size:130%;" ><span style="color: rgb(255, 102, 0); As an architect, I am bound by so many factors like codes, regulations, budget, schedule, functional needs of the occupants, and lots more that are beyond my control. I don't get to build the buildings I design since that would be a tremendous liability issue and is highly discouraged by liability insurance companies. So one of the reasons I like jewelry-making is that I get to actually make the pieces myself, from start to finish. I enjoy the totally control and the total process. </span><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51);" >I started seed beading in 2005, and then quickly switched to silver wire work. Now I prefer fabricating each jewelry piece using sheet and wire materials. A happy and satisfied client brings smiles to me and keeps me going. </span><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51);"> </span> <span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51);"><br /><br /><br />Be sure to visit Theresa on her: <a href="http://studio618.blogspot.com">blog</a>,<a href="http://studio618.etsy.com"> etsy</a>, <a href="http://studio618.artfire.com">artfire</a>, <a href="http://twitter.com/studio618">twitter</a>, <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Studio-618/131484845570">facebook</a>, <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/studio618">flickr</a>, <a href="studio618@hotmail.com">email</a><br /><br /><br />XoXo,<br /><a href="http://twitter.com/washwhendirty">kristina</a><br /></span><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/4379273988981914326-8924135743234121016?l=handmadebykristina.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>kristinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07987815517013763887noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4379273988981914326.post-52680296869289803892009-08-23T13:05:00.000-05:002009-08-23T17:33:44.076-05:002009-08-23T17:33:44.076-05:00Sew & Stow<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">31 Fun Sewing Projects to Carry, Hold, and Organize Your Stuff, Your Home and Yourself!<br />Betty Oppenheimer<br /><br /></span></span><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#FF6600;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">ISBN:</span></span></span></b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;"> 978-1-60342-027-3<br /></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#FF6600;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">Condition:</span></span></b></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;"> New<br /></span></span><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#FF6600;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">Regular Price:</span></span></span></b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;"> 16.95 USD<br /></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#FF6600;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">Your Price:</span></span></b></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;"> 13.95 USD<br /></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#FF6600;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">US Shipping:</span></span></b></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;"> 5.00 USD<br /></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#FF6600;"><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">International Shipping:</span></span></b></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;"> Please contact me first for shipping arrangements (email: kristina@washwhendirty.com subject: blog book sale) - Thank You!<br /><br /></span></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap; A new generation has finally picked up needle and thread, and they're ready to sew. And why not? With a basic machine and a little know-how, crafters can make stylish and utterly distinct items.<br /><br />In </span></span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">Sew & Stow: 30 Fun Projects to Carry, Hold, and Organize Your Stuff, Your Home, and Yourself!</span></span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">, Betty Oppenheimer, an avid crafter and sewer, shares 30 of her favorite patterns, including functional items for the home, workshop, camp, and garden. From aprons to hammocks, and from lunch totes to laundry bags, Oppenheimer's projects will help crafters get organized and help the planet with a wide assortment of reusable totes, carry-alls, and shopping bags.<br /><br />Oppenheimer includes fuss-free patterns for everyday necessities, as well as one-of-a-kind items not often found in sewing books — a log tote for a strapping lumberjack, a stadium seat for the sports enthusiast, and a dog bed for that favorite furry friend. Her projects will appeal to novice and expert crafters alike; each pattern includes step-by-step instructions and illustrations, and each can be completed in just a few hours. Projects are presented with fresh, contemporary fabrics, and are sure to delight even the most trendsetting crafter. With Oppenheimer's help, anyone can turn a swatch of fabric into a practical — and eye-catching — item that can be used again and again.<br /></span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; I know I have a creative side, and it was never really encouraged by my parents (Chinese parents are into academic achievements only), and it got totally squashed when I started working for a job, but after I started making jewelry, I just realized the creative side of me is just hiding somewhere, all I need is just the right outlet and a loving person who's always very encouraging and giving me constructive criticism.</span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/washwhendirty/3817277924/" title="yellowgoat by washwhendirty, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2559/3817277924_683dc4be0d.jpg" alt="yellowgoat" width="500" height="483" /></a><br /><br /></div><span style=";font-family:arial;font-size:180%;"><span style="color: rgb(255, 204, 0); font-weight: bold;">How does one find your designs? </span></span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">I am currently selling on <a href="http://yellowgoatdesign.blogspot.com/?dest=Shop">Etsy</a>, but I am planning to have over venues both online and offline. Which means our living room is always an explosion of batting, tools, brushes, tacks, chair frames and an air compressor while our hallway works as our storage unit...sometimes we can't even get to the front door!<br /></span><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse;font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" ><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/washwhendirty/3793803609/" title="reclaim the throne by washwhendirty, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3573/3793803609_1529cf867b.jpg" alt="reclaim the throne" width="434" height="500" /></a></span><span style="font-size:100%;"><br /></span></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse;font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" ><span style="color: rgb(255, 102, 0); font-weight: bold;">what? {inspires your design, the name}</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse;font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" >I came up with the name for my shop because my pieces are primarily reclaimed vintage and antique chairs, it just seemed to fit perfectly. When it came to me I couldn't resist. :) My designs are inspired by things that I see, often an entire project is centered around one textile that I just had to use. I like trying to think outside the typical reupholstered furniture box. Anything that I come up with that hasn't been done before is interesting to me. Unfortunately I have way more ideas than I have time. Some interesting euro-urban-inspired designs are coming soon! I LOVE working with found objects, there's no need to manufacture new pieces when you can be more challenged by things that are already out there. I think the key to using found objects to their greatest potential is looking past the obvious and finding something much more obscure and interesting. My most avid interest in college was sculpture, but at this time in my life I have really used that interest to try to bring a more utilitarian kind of art into people's homes. I love what I do!<br /><br /></span><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;font-size:100%;" ><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/washwhendirty/3794623622/" title="reclaim the throne by washwhendirty, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2656/3794623622_0f15e91076.jpg" alt="reclaim the throne" width="500" height="207" /></a></span><span style="font-size:100%;"><br /></span></div></div><div style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 102, 0);"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse;font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" > when? {did you decide to become a designer}</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse;font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" >I've known since I was little that I wanted to be an artist...originally (when I was a toddler:) I thought I'd be an architect but somewhere over time that changed.</span></div><div style="color: rgb(255, 102, 0); font-weight: bold;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse;font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" > where? {did you go to school}</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse;font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" >I went to Covenant College in Lookout Mt. I draw the line of repair however at structure, if a piece is not sound when you find it, it will never be, so it has to have good bones originally. There's no feeling like giving something completely worn out a second chance, you have to always look at them and see the uniqueness and potential. I absolutely insist on my work being the absolute highest quality I can make it. If I'm not using a heavy grade high quality upholstery fabric then I will double or triple line a chair to give it the same strength. All of my materials are the best I can afford for the chairs and I will never sell a piece knowingly misleading someone if there is a flaw. I try to be completely transparent about my work as I am very proud of it and hold myself to a very high standard. I love "the hunt" of taking custom orders, usually I can go from order to shipment in about a week depending on my workload. I ship my large pieces through Greyhound Package Express to keep my shipping prices at the absolute minimum. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse;font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" ><br />Visit Christyn - reclaimedthrone at the following places: Etsy shop - <span class="Object" id="OBJ_PREFIX_DWT18"><a href="http://reclaimthethrone.etsy.com/" target="_blank">http://reclaimthethrone.etsy.com/</a></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse;font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" >Blog: before and after processes - <span class="Object" id="OBJ_PREFIX_DWT19"><a href="http://reclaimthethronevintage.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">http://reclaimthethronevintage.blogspot.com/</a></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse;font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" >Facebook page: before and after pics and updates - </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse;font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" ><span class="Object" id="OBJ_PREFIX_DWT20"><a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Peoria-IL/Reclaim-The-Throne/107522666389?ref=ts" target="_blank">http://www.facebook.com/pages/Peoria-IL/Reclaim-The-Throne/107522666389?ref=ts</a></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse;font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" >Twitter: <a href="http://twitter.com/reclaimedthrone">@ReclaimedThrone</a><br /></span></div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/4379273988981914326-1710189412134562501?l=handmadebykristina.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>kristinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07987815517013763887noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4379273988981914326.post-53605917594118214912009-08-05T00:15:00.005-05:002009-08-06T05:47:09.225-05:002009-08-06T05:47:09.225-05:00back to school weekend promotion<table style="text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td><object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.etsy.com/flash/spots/etsy_mini.swf?user_id=5943751&user_name=washwhendirty&item_source=shop&item_size=thumbnail&rows=1&columns=5" width="468" height="92"><param name="movie" value="http://www.etsy.com/flash/spots/etsy_mini.swf?user_id=5943751&user_name=washwhendirty&item_source=shop&item_size=thumbnail&rows=1&columns=5"></object><br /></td></tr><tr><td><a style="text-decoration: none; The girl does everything! From up-cycling, organic gardening, mom extraordinaire and a great teacher who inspires her students to be more earth friendly and eco-conscious.<br /></span><p style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0);font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><b><br /></b></span></p><p style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0);font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><b>Tell us a little bit about you.</b></span></p> <p style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"> My name is Unni Strand, I live in Norway, have two children (18 and 4), a partner and a cat. I feel fortunate. And of course, I am!<br />I live close to the wood and not far from big cities. (OK, I know that’s relative, since Norway’s biggest city is Oslo and have only 550 000 inhabitants…)<br />I love chocolate, eggplant, cats, hens, latte, flowers, printing, sewing and spring. And I truly care about the environment!</span></p> <p style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"> I run two Etsy shops:<a mce_href="http://strandredesign.etsy.com" href="http://strandredesign.etsy.com/"> Strand Redesign</a> where I recycle old fabrics with screen printing/sewing and<a mce_href="http://unnistrand.etsy.com" href="http://unnistrand.etsy.com/"> Unni Strand</a> where I sell t-shirts upcycled with new prints.<br /></span></p><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://strandredesign.etsy.com/"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_DgnTVZkxkdA/SnZSzXjqu8I/AAAAAAAAAd4/4gYi2ih-Lmg/s400/Intervju-produkter.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5365567048508947394" border="0" /></a><a href="http://strandredesign.etsy.com/">strandredesign.etsy.com</a><br /></div><p style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0);font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><b>So you live in Norway, Tell us a little bit about your country.</b></span></p><p style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"> I asked my son to help me with this one. He says: <span mce_style="color: #339966;" style="color: rgb(51, 153, 102);"><i><span style="color: rgb(102, 51, 0);">“We think we have a lot of snow, but we don’t. And it’s cold and awful.”</span> </i></span>And I guess it is partly true, if you don’t dress well. But with the right clothing you could have a great time outside with the children in winter. And summer is occasionally warm and lovely. We sometimes even have real heat periods. I am proud to tell that I grow peaches and grapes in my garden.</span></p> <p style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0);font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><b>What prompted you to pursue a sustainable/green lifestyle?</b></span></p> <p style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"> I have been trying to figure out where my environmental obsession started. Besides living near nature and coming from a family of gardeners, I think it might have started with the book <a mce_href="http://www.amazon.com/Barbapapas-Ark-Annette-Tison/dp/B000B762AE" href="http://www.amazon.com/Barbapapas-Ark-Annette-Tison/dp/B000B762AE"><i>The ark of Barbapapa</i> (Annette Tison and Talus Taylor)</a> I had as a child. This book discusses pollution in terms children can relate to. In short: The Barbapapa's saving the animals, then the humans fixing the world. In the book, the world is getting more and more grey as people pollute and they also chase the animals. The Barbas come to rescue, build a spaceship and take all the animals away to a green planet. After a while, the people start to miss all the animals, clean up the world and plant trees and flowers. – Finally, all the animals return.</span></p><p style="color: rgb(102, 51, 0); font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;font-family:arial;" ><span style="font-size:100%;">"I really loved the drawing of how nice the world looked when it was cleaned up and replanted. I keep a vegetable garden. –Have grown vegetables since I was 8 years old and had my own garden since I was 20. And of course, only natural fertilizers and no spraying with pest control.<br /></span></p><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DgnTVZkxkdA/SnZVe06RXkI/AAAAAAAAAeA/2wPS1Yugl8M/s1600-h/Poteter-1024x682.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DgnTVZkxkdA/SnZVe06RXkI/AAAAAAAAAeA/2wPS1Yugl8M/s400/Poteter-1024x682.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5365569994146012738" border="0" /></a><span style="color: rgb(102, 51, 0); font-weight: bold;">heirloom potatoes from my garden</span><br /></div><p style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"> Everyone should grow some vegetables! In their garden or a container or whatever they have! There is too little food in the world and too much unused land.</span></p><p style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;">I save gift wrapping paper and ribbon from presents we receive and reuse it. I use the lawn movings for mulching in flower and vegetable beds. –It keeps weeds away and provides fertilizing.<br />I try to buy locally grown or organic food. I try to drive as little as possible, but this is really the hardest part for me since I work far from home.</span></p><p style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;">I try to make as many of my presents myself. The habit I am most proud of is that I have started to use only reusable shopping bags whenever I shop. (My partner doesn’t, so we still have plastic bags for the garbage…) The hardest part was to get used to always keeping the totes in my handbag. And of course, I use my own recycled shopping totes!<br /><b style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0);">What do you do professionally? And how do you incorporate sustainability in your work?</b></span> </p> <p style="text-align: center;font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;">I am a teacher, teaching art and design subjects in high school. When I talk about design or materials science, I always incorporate sustainability and fair trade. I think my students actually might be a bit fed up with this. It really surprises me how little they know and care about these issues.</span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://unnistrand.etsy.com/"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_DgnTVZkxkdA/SnZW32MKNFI/AAAAAAAAAeI/PHHqCWp-dls/s400/Intervju+tskjorter+copy.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5365571523497833554" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:100%;"><a href="http://unnistrand.etsy.com/">unnistrand.etsy.com</a><br /></span></p> <p style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;">In my redesign business, I reuse fabrics and I use only recycled shipping materials.</span></p> <p style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0);font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><b>As a designer, what is your design philosophy? What inspires you?</b></span></p> <p style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;">I love to work with textile. And I have a need to create. Sometimes I am too creative for my own good and cannot sleep for all the ideas I have.<br />I do screen printing and redesign. I want to make new favorite objects out of old, unloved fabrics or clothes! I want to make shopping totes that make people want to use them instead of plastic bags. And I want my up-cycled t-shirts to be so cool that people prefer them before new tees.</span></p> <p style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;">I am inspired by nature, mostly flowers and animals. I like it if I can make my designs express a hint of humor. Before, when I did weaving I also aimed for that humor bit, but believe me, it’s far easier with printing than with the loom!</span></p><p style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><b style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0);">While pursuing a sustainable lifestyle, do you have any books/magazines/websites etc that you recommend where one can find info on how to incorporate eco-friendly options in our day to day life?</b><br /><br /><a mce_href="http://etsy.com" href="http://etsy.com/">Etsy</a> has opened a new world to me with lots of handmade and redesign. <a mce_href="http://ecoetsy.blogspot.com" href="http://ecoetsy.blogspot.com/">Team Eco Etsy</a> has a great blog! </span> </p> <p style="color: rgb(51, 204, 0);font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><b>Who do you listen to currently?
