Last year the Northampton High School Concert Band was awarded a unique opportunity: to be able to travel to Washington D.C., and perform on the Concert Hall stage of the Kennedy Center. This year, they took the offer. Early in May, they made their way to D.C. and spent three days rehearsing with another band, eating food, and having a spectacular time traipsing around Washington. On the fourth day, they rode to the Kennedy Center and got their chance.

Magical Things Happen in Chemistry...

Remember the first article we posted on Hamp High Happenings? We shared that our AP Chemistry students had done an amazing job ath the Chemistry Olympiad held at UMASS. In this event we had 19 students (out of a field of over 200) qualify for 32 slots that allowed them to move to the second round (which included an essay question and a lab). These students competed last weekend and five of them had qualifying scores to reach the regional competition that will be held at University of Connecticut.

Four Students Perform in All-State Band

Every year the Massachusetts Music Educator’s Association (MMEA) hosts a festival for talented young musicians from across the state. Entrance is by audition, and after months of preparation four students from NHS were selected to be a part of the festival. The festival takes place in Boston, and students spend three days and two nights switching between hotels for rest and recuperation at night, and the Seaport World Trade Center for rigorous rehearsals during the day.

A Musical Experience

When asked about their own experiences in the musical, students responded with nothing but enthusiasm. The musical brings people together. People cross over grade boundary lines and meet students with all different interests, and this year, more than ever the cast has really gotten along. The musical itself speaks to the immense amount of work each actor has put into the show.

Sweet Charity: The Show Must Go On!

The show must go on! Or so they say. It seems like this year more than most this phrase is applicable to Northampton High School’s spring production, “Sweet Charity”, the 1960’s musical. In an unforeseeable happening, the entire Pit Orchestra was trapped in a frozen state of suspended animation, after a run in with the evil Lord Xenu. Because of this, the show this year will operate without any music.

What is never seen but always heard? No, not obnoxious children. It’s the Pit Orchestra! For every great musical production there are instrumentalists in the pit who hold it all together. And Northampton High School’s Pit Orchestra this year looks as good as ever as they prepare for “Sweet Charity”, and they don’t sound half bad either. Under the energetic direction of Deb Coon, the Pit provides musical accompaniment for the actors and singers on stage.

The Stagecraft Class Helps Design Sweet Charity Set

The students of Northampton High School’s stagecraft class share an important role in this years production of Sweet Charity. Instructed by Steven Eldrige, two classes, on alternating days have spent their 4th period this semester in preparation for the show. While the musical is the highest priority at the moment, the class will continue in an in-depth look at the many aspects of stagecraft and technical theater.

A Taste of Broadway Comes to NHS

Sweet Charity is a great, big valentine of a musical celebrating the power of love and the beauty of the eternally optimistic heart. Charity Hope Valentine, a dancer-for-hire in a seedy New York ballroom, never stops believing that her happy ending is right around the corner no matter how bleak her life looks.

Finally, when her prospects seem utterly hopeless, Charity finds herself trapped in an elevator with the very shy (and very claustrophobic) Oscar Lindquist, a tax accountant.
