Lake Vostok, Sealed in Antarctic Ice

Two and a half miles beneath Antarctica's ice lies Lake Vostok, a mysterious body of water, 160 miles long and 30 miles wide, that is believed to have been sealed off from the rest of the world for 20 million years.

Now, the Russians, who run the Vostok research station at the surface, say they have reached the lake with a drill bit. Or at least they believe they have - the drill apparently broke through the ice into the hidden lake and, as planned, automatically withdrew so as not to contaminate the water below.

"Great God! This is an awful place," wrote the English explorer Robert Falcon Scott when he reached the South Pole a century ago last month. Scott and his four comrades, beaten to the pole by Roald Amundsen's Norwegian expedition, died as they tried to trudge back to safety. And the climate is actually worse at Vostok station, where the Russians once measured a surface temperature of 129 degrees F below zero. (The current temperature, the Russians report, is about 40 below.)
Lake Vostok, seen so far only on radar, is believed to be warmed by geothermal energy. But why drill to it, beyond feeling the tug of mystery?

"According to our research, the quantity of oxygen there exceeds that on other parts of our planet by 10 to 20 times. Any life forms that we find are likely to be unique on Earth," said Sergey Bulat, the chief scientist of Russia's Antarctic Expedition, as quoted by Russian Reporter magazine.
There are other scientists who are doubtful. Too much oxygen, they argue, could actually be toxic to life. So Lake Vostok could turn out to be unique - the first place found on Earth where there is water in liquid form but nothing living.
This could have implications for the search for life elsewhere in the solar system. Jupiter's moon Europa and Saturn's moon Enceladus have both been seen by NASA probes to have icy crusts, but, apparently, enough heat from inside to raise at least the possibility of hidden oceans. Europa in particular has been hopefully labeled as a possible home for extraterrestrial life. Space scientists would like to know a lot more about them. Could Lake Vostok, half a billion miles closer, offer clues as to what lies beyond, in the cold reaches of space?
The Russians, despite the cold, despite limited money for scientific research, have been drilling down toward Lake Vostok for 14 years now. What will they find in the water there?

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Developer Closed Down

Reports have been flying around over the last couple of days going back and forth between confirming and denying the closure of GSC Game World, the Ukranian developer behind S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.

There is no official confirmation yet and conflicting reports are still circulating, but we are quite confident now that the studio is in fact closed/closing now.

A tweet made by the studio’s director Dmitri Bourkovski said (in Russian): “Not PR. GSC closed.”

Additionally, Ukrainian news site, UkraNews, reported that the studio’s owner, Sergei Grigorovich, has decided to close it and promised to pay employee wages through February 2012.

The studio was working on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2.

Giant plumes of methane bubbling to surface of Arctic Ocean

Russian scientists have discovered hundreds of plumes of methane gas, some 1,000 meters in diameter, bubbling to the surface of the Arctic Ocean. Scientists are concerned that as the Arctic Shelf recedes, the unprecedented levels of gas released could greatly accelerate global climate change.

Igor Semiletov of the Russian Academy of Sciences tells the UK's Independent that the plumes of methane, a gas 20 times as harmful as carbon dioxide, have shocked scientists who have been studying the region for decades. "Earlier we found torch-like structures like this but they were only tens of meters in diameter," he said. "This is the first time that we've found continuous, powerful and impressive seeping structures, more than 1,000 metres in diameter. It's amazing."

Semiletov said that while his research team has discovered more than 100 plumes, they estimate there to be "thousands" over the wider area, extending from the Russian mainland to the East Siberian Arctic Shelf.

"In a very small area, less than 10,000 square miles, we have counted more than 100 fountains, or torch-like structures, bubbling through the water column and injected directly into the atmosphere from the seabed," Semiletov said. "We carried out checks at about 115 stationary points and discovered methane fields of a fantastic scale — I think on a scale not seen before. Some plumes were a kilometer or more wide and the emissions went directly into the atmosphere — the concentration was a hundred times higher than normal."

Satellite gets pic of Chinese carrier

China is gearing up for War! dont you think?

A commercial U.S. satellite company said it has captured a photo of China's first aircraft carrier in the Yellow Sea off the Chinese coast.

DigitalGlobe Inc. said Wednesday one of its satellites photographed the carrier Dec. 8. A DigitalGlobe analyst found the image Tuesday while searching through photos.

Stephen Wood, director of DigitalGlobe's analysis center, said he's confident the ship is the Chinese carrier because of the location and date of the photo. The carrier was on a sea trial at the time.

DigitalGlobe, based in Longmont, Colo., sells satellite imagery and analysis to clients that include the U.S. military, emergency response agencies and private companies. DigitalGlobe has three orbiting satellites and a fourth is under construction.

The aircraft carrier has generated intense international interest because of what it might portend about China's intentions as a military power.

The former Soviet Union started building the carrier, which it called the Varyag, but never finished it. When the Soviet Union collapsed, it ended up in the hands of Ukraine, a former Soviet republic.

China bought the ship from Ukraine in 1998 and spent years refurbishing it. It had no engines, weaponry or navigation systems when China acquired it.

China has said the carrier is intended for research and training, which has led to speculation that it plans to build future copies.

China initially said little about its plans for the carrier but has been more open in recent years, said Bonnie S. Glaser, a China expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

"It wasn't until the Chinese actually announced they were sending it out on a trial run they admitted, 'Yes, we are actually launching a carrier,'" she said.

China publicly announced two sea trials for the carrier that occurred this year, she said.

The carrier's progress is in line with the U.S. military's expectations, said Cmdr. Leslie Hull-Ryde, a Defense Department spokeswoman.

A Defense Department report to Congress this year said the carrier could become operationally available to the Chinese navy by the end of next year but without aircraft.

"From that point, it will take several additional years before the carrier has an operationally viable air group," Hull-Ryde said in an email.

She declined to comment on the DigitalGlobe photo, saying it was an intelligence matter.

UFO filmed hovering over Russian protesters

Some 25,000 pro-democracy protesters in Moscow's Bolotnaya Square had an unexpected participant in their demonstrations on Saturday when a UFO was spotted hovering above the crowd.

Several demonstrators in the crowd espied the hovering object, with reflecting blue and red lights. Descriptions of the object--which observers say was definitely not a helicopter--included "five extended tendrils or pylons emanating from the body of the vehicle."

But just because it was a UFO, doesn't mean it was extraterrestrial.

The UFO was in sight long enough for some protesters to climb trees for a closer look. Russian news site RT.com's Vitaliy Matveev disputes the UFO theory, saying the object was at worst, a Russian government spy drone or simply a news media camera filming the protests:

Correcting earlier rumors that each PlayStation Vita unit is tied to a single PSN account, Sony associate brand marketing manager Crystal MacKenzie explained that the PSN account is in fact tied to PS Vita’s memory card and not to the handheld itself.

In other words, PS Vita owners are allowed to switch accounts by switching the system’s over-priced memory cards.

It is also possible to change the PSN account attached to a given memory card by doing a factory reset, MacKenzie noted.

A single PSN account can be tied to several memory cards, however.

Apple’s Anti-Leaking Policy Leaked

Apple is known to go to great lengths to protect their secrets and prevent leaks about their products before official launch, and that’s why it is ironic that their anti-leaks policy document got leaked.

The document was leaked by 9to5Mac website and – surprisingly enough – it is not as over the top as one would expect given Apple’s reputation.

The policy states mainly that Apple employees “may not disclose Apple confidential information to an outside party unless a written agreement or license has been previously signed and approved by the division vice president.”

Additionally, the policy directs the employees not to use their @apple.com email addresses for non-business-related matters, with alternative @me.com email addresses given for use in personal communications.

The policy allows Apple employees to have their own blogs and websites as long as they don’t discuss anything about the company or its products. As for social networks such as Facebook, Apple employees are required to “be thoughtful about how you present yourself in online social networks. The lines between public and private, and personal and professional are blurred in online social networks.”

Mimicking a similar move that was done by Sony not so long ago, Microsoft has amended the Xbox 360 terms of service to prevent U.S. customers from taking the participating in class action lawsuits against it.

“If you live in the United States,” the new TOS reads. “You and Microsoft agree that if you and Microsoft do not resolve any dispute by informal negotiation ... any effort to resolve the dispute will be conducted exclusively by binding arbitration in accordance with the arbitration procedures in Section 18.1.7.”

“You understand and acknowledge that by agreeing to binding arbitration, you are giving up the right to litigate (or participate as a party or class member) all disputes in court before a judge or jury.”

“Instead, you understand and agree that all disputes will be resolved before a neutral arbitrator, whose award (Decision) will be binding and final, except for a limited right of appeal under the federal arbitration act.”

Facebook Bug - Zuckerberg’s Private Photos Exposed

It is no secret that Facebook has a lot of privacy protection issues, and now the latest one of them has hit the site’s creator Mark Zuckerberg himself.

The new flaw was discovered by members of a body building forum and it was used successfully to access people’s private photos until Facebook plugged the hole.

The flaw took advantage of a feature in the “Report Abuse” tool. When a Facebook user reports a picture for “nudity or pornography,” the tool presented him with a list of other photos from the same user so that he can report them as well. Problem is, this list ignored the user’s privacy settings.

Facebook disabled the “Report Abuse” tool temporary until the issue is fixed, but not before private photos of Mark Zuckerberg made their way to the internet.

Piracy Is Not Harmful - Swiss Government Says

A new official report from the Swiss government concluded that the country’s lenient anti-piracy laws are more than enough since piracy is not as harmful as the entertainment industry would have us believe.

The report conceded that more than one third of Swiss over 15 pirate music, movies and games regularly; however, it noted that most of them don’t realize they are doing something illegal despite widespread media coverage on the subject.

More importantly, the report noted that no matter the size of piracy going on, the total amount spent on entertainment doesn’t really change. In other words, money saved by piracy is spent on other forms of entertainment anyway.

In the end, content creators end up recouping their piracy losses through concerts, cinemas and merchandising as those give user an experience that cannot be downloaded.

So what about studios and record labels who make their livelihood off of content? Tough luck, the report says. They have to “adapt to the changing consumer behavior” or die.
