If you are in Memphis this Saturday, the 26th, please come out from 6am - 1pm and shop for a cause. We're hosting a yard sale with all proceeds going to Operation Feed - a workplace food drive benefitting the Memphis Food Bank.

We've got everything from vintage clothes to cool books to a dog mullet - and you can pay in non-perishable canned goods!

Also, our neighbors World's Apart and Central BBQ have generously donated a portion of Saturday's sales to help feed the need - so visit them as well.

We had an incredible time at ACM this year. We met some fabulous people, heard some great speakers, and thoroughly enjoyed St. Paul. Afterwards, we took a trip to Brookings, SD to see the progress on the Children's Museum of South Dakota which is coming along wonderfully! Looks like the museum will open in August - can't wait!

Lots of updates...

We just finished the exhibit model of the Children's Museum of Alamance County and we don't want to brag (too much), but it is fabulous! It was truly a studio effort with everyone pitching in as we built all of the museum's exhibits to a 1/4" scale. Fortunately, we remain in tact - with all of our fingers and toes - but there were a few close calls.

Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center on the cover of Shutterbug

Congratulations to Jeffrey Jacobs and the Shutterbug article on him and his craft. For the Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center in Fort Smith, Jacobs focused on the texture of the building as well as its setting. He used more than 1oo lights to highlight the stone facade and surrounding trees. He makes our work look good!

Jamie's 4th daughter, Eliot, will be born on Friday (if not sooner)... To celebrate, we enjoyed some King Cake and did a little creative muscle flexing - personalizing onesies for our newest studio member. We are so happy for Jamie, Andrea, and the rest of the Stempel family. Welcome, Baby Eliot!

We are very excited with the progress of the Glazer Children's Museum! The exterior is almost complete - all of the metal panels are up and the bright colors are making a big splash. While there are still some exterior details to finish, the majority of the construction has turned to the interior. Framing's going up for the walls and ceiling - really giving the space some shape.

Now, it's not every August morning that you will be greeted at the door with hot chocolate and fresh Christmas cookies or come into an auditorium and hear carolers singing Christmas songs, but that is exactly what occurred last week. Christmas in August? Well, sort of. In case you didn't see the press conference, Starry Nights is back in Memphis! Starry Nights after a much too long hiatus is returning to Shelby Farms Park this year. For those of you new to Memphis, Starry Nights is an exciting event full of over a million Christmas lights making up dozens of lighted displays. The show has a variety of seasonal displays as well as environmental and nature displays for the whole family to enjoy. Starry Nights 2009 will feature more than a million environmentally friendly LED lights illuminating dozens of all-new displays along with some of your old favorites . We here at Haizlip Studio are very excited to be the designers for this fantastic show. We have a little experience at this as well since our principal Reb Haizlip was the original designer for the original Starry Nights.

The press conference, on Monday August 3rd, which included such special guests as Shelby County Mayor A.C. Wharton and Memphis Mayor pro tem Lowery, but it was our very special guest that got to announce the news, that's right Santa Claus himself. The event will open November 27, 2009 and run through January 2, 2010. The press conference was capped off with the unveiling and lighting up of this years’ first Starry night's exhibit piece, a Signage piece that will be located along Walnut Grove at the entry to the park.

Glazer Children’s Museum: Construction Progress!

The Glazer Children’s museum has truly progressed since we last updated everyone. The main building structure is all up and the slabs are poured. And now, The metal panels for the exterior “skin” of the building are going up around the building. The exterior is a mostly a pure white “box” with splashes of colors. It is really exciting to see the building really start to come together.

A BIG WEEK for Haizlip Studio

We've got a big week ahead as TWO of our local projects have their official grand openings! As museum planners and designers, most of our work is in other cities across the country. We don't get to do a whole lot locally, but we always love it when we do. Especially when the projects are as unique and rewarding as these were.

First up, L'Ecole Culinaire, a new culinary school for St. Louis based Vaterott Educational Centers Inc. Haizlip Studio is proud to be a part of this new branch campus in the Memphis area. The new 30,000 square foot facility includes: (9) hands-on professional kitchen labs, accompanying classroom space, a student operated restaurant, library/resource room, computer labs, a student retail space, and student lounge space. We're thrilled with how this space turned out, and believe it will be an important addition to the myriad of educational and training options available in Memphis.

The official Grand Opening celebration will be held this Friday and the Neelys (of Memphis's own Neely's Barbeque and Food Network's Down Home with the Neelys) are scheduled to appear!! (Sorry, it's invitation only!) Also opening this week is the new two and a half acre children's garden, My Big Backyard, at Memphis Botanic Garden. Our principal and lead designer, Reb Haizlip, did the original planning and architecture for MBG, so we were very excited to get to work on this garden. We worked closely with the landscape architect, Terra Design, to develop a fun and educational outdoor space that includes (to name just a few) a treehouse, a maze, an elevated walkway through the trees, and tons of learning opportunities exploring the plants and animal habitats all around. The theme of the garden is reintroducing good old-fashioned fun children. The garden aims to provide examples of the possibilities for parents and children to recreate the magic at home.

My Big Backyard officially opens to the public this Saturday (August 1st) at 11 AM. Here's just one little sneak peek of one little portion of the fun:

Building Maintenance

The work of artist Jan Vormann caught our attention in a chance glimpse across Good Magazine. Vormann created a public art series in Tel Aviv and Yaffo, Israel where he sought to repair an age old crumbling wall with an infill of . . . . LEGOS! Everyone in the office can attest to still having their Lego collections from childhood (and with some prodding, we'll reveal that we still play with them). As a nod to Mr. Vormann and an opportunity to patch a chipped corner on our building, we decided to make use of some toys lying around the office!

Harry's Big Adventure: My Bug World

Haizlip Studio, in partnership with Archer Malmo and Audubon Nature Institute, are working on a traveling exhibit for Terminix called “Harry’s Big Adventure: My Bug World”. The exhibit features nine interactive exhibit modules with 20 hands-on activities, safely supervised “touch encounters” for live insect interaction, and live entertainment like: cricket spitting area and live roach racing. The exhibit modules include five different bug habitats: Forest, Water, Crop, Meadow, and Your House. Each of which provide an immersive educational experience to learn about different bugs in their own habitat. The House habitat focuses on pests and offers solutions to keep bugs out of your house. The exhibit mascot, Harry the Chinese Praying Mantis, is featured throughout the exhibit and joined by all of his bug character friends. The University of Tennessee at Martin - Brehm Building Addition

Construction is wrapping up for the new 10,000 s.f. addition to Brehm Hall at UT Martin. The two story addition features new classroom space, faculty offices, faculty and student lounges, and a two-story concourse. The addition is set to open in August and will accommodate the Agricultural Science department at UTM.

German Suburb Does Away with the Car [see link]

A hopeful article about a suburb in Germany that has restricted vehicular use to the periphery. While this community was planned from scratch, it seems to suggest a just model for considering new and vital redevelopment of aging urban centers with flagging vitality. Pockets of Memphis are infused with a mix of housing and commercial districts that were designed with vehicular travel in mind. The space and infrastructure of these areas are a good base layer for a more sophisticated pedestrian-powered infrastructure. Haizlip Studio is located on the edge of a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood, Cooper Young (more can be learned about the neighborhood here, www.cooperyoung.org/). The success of the CY neighborhood revitalization over the last two decades has lead to a larger vision that seeks to tie adjoining areas into the fabric. Currently underway are plans for improving the bicycle infrastructure in this neighborhood- the organizers assembled are merely asking for one overburdened arterial corridor, Cooper Street, to be laid out with consideration for a single bicycle lane. It hurts our heads and gladdens our hearts to imagine an entire suburb that ascribes to the principles of pedestrian safety, healthy lifestyles, and a minimized ecological footprint.

Onward! Onward does the march for advocating for better urban places and communities go. We are proud to be a part of this urban fabric and gladly lend a hand and our expertise whenever the need arises.

Back from ACM's Interactivity!!

We came, we exhibited, we left. Unfortunately, we didn't have much time to explore the amazing city of Philadelphia, but what we did see was really, really nice. Mary, one of our project managers, had been there before so she was kind enough to tell me just how much I was missing.

But InterActivity went well, we met lots of great people, and enjoyed the chance to proudly show off our work.

The evening event at Please Touch was incredible! They went all out to make us feel welcome, including a Mummers Parade that greeted us when we arrived! It was so fun!

This amazing scupture by local artist Leo Sewell was absolutely breathtaking. It's made entirely out of recycled toys and playthings. Wow.

Reconstructive Surgery

Needing surgery is never fun, especially when you’re a model. One of our exhibit models, needed a little “reconstructive surgery” after a bit of a rough shipment. A majority of the model made it through the shipment without any damage, but the climber was not so lucky. The exhibit model is one of several models we intend to display at ACM (Association of Children’s Museums) annual conference. But fear not, a few hours later the “patient” (model) turned out good as new. Now off to hopefully deliver some WOW with the model at ACM!

Haizlip Studio has a new neighbor: Midtown Nursery. The nursery has moved into the lot, previously occupied by Love’s Feed, at the corner of Central and Cooper right across the street from Haizlip Studio. They are a much welcomed addition to the neighborhood. Their beautiful flowers and plants have done wonders in enriching the beauty of our neighborhood. So, Welcome neighbor!
