I've been slacking lately bringing you deals from around the city, enjoying the summer, not enough time in front of the laptop. But here is a site to check-out to fill the void. LivingSocial Deals brings a new NYC deal each day. For example, today's deal is for European cafe, Brio. For $20 you will get a gift certificate for $50...not bad. The real power of the site is it's use of social networking. If you get three of your friends to purchase the deal, through facebook, twitter, etc. you get the deal for free. It is a new site, but if it gets popular you could really start racking up the free deals.

Check out the site, and let us know if you buy any of the deals.

Afternoon at High Line

Central Park may get most of the attention, but this city has a ton of great parks to take advantage of. And you can't beat the price! Recently, I decided to spend some time in the much hyped, newly opened, High Line park on the West Side of Manhattan.

In the 1930's an elevated train platform was put into use on the West Side to keep dangerous freight trains from travelling around the city at street level. The High Line train line was used all the way until 1980 when it was finally decommissioned. There was much debate on what to do with the structure, with many wishing to tear it down. A group of train enthusiasts worked to preserve the structure and finally saw the payoff this summer with the opening of the first piece of the new High Line park.

The park currently runs from West 20th down to Gansevoort St. I took the stairway at West 20th up to the elevated platform, probably about 20 feet above street level. To the North you can see the future of the project, another 14 blocks still being worked on and closed to the public. To the South the path begins, winding around, and even through buildings of Chelsea and the Meatpacking District. As I walk to the south my eye jumps around to all there is to take in. The path is surrounded by plant life, making it feel more like a nature trail then a stroll through a city. The plants chosen are the plants that grew naturally on the High Line when it was no longer in use. Adding the natural setting, to the right I have the Hudson River with a slight breeze blowing off of it. To the left, I'm brought back to city life, taking in the architecture of the neighborhood.

Macy's Fireworks 2009

joce01_y on flickr

While most of you will be taking in the various July 4th drink specials around the city, don't forget to step out of the dark bar into the streets around dusk to take in the Macy's fireworks spectacular. Pay close attention though, if you have a go-to viewing location chances are you are going to have to switch it up this year. Brooklyn and Queens get the shaft this year as the fireworks move to the Hudson River for the first time in 33 years. I guess it is to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Henry's discovery, I'm just pissed Jersey is looking at my fireworks display.

40,000 shells will be blasted from 6 barges from between 24th and 50th Streets. You will need to be on 12th Ave. to get a good view of the show...Or somewhere across the river in NJ. Take a look at this link from Macy's for a list of all the NYC access points, and more importantly where you will not be able to see the fireworks from.

Once the show is over get back to your bender weekend.

Here is the first of many drink specials I am going to bring you for the upcoming holiday weekend.

We all have our patriotic duties, and Whistlin's Dixie's is honoring
theirs by offering great drink specials on their birthday (7/2),
America's birthday (must I tell you?!?), and that lonely day in
between (7/3). Details of all the specials are attached, including
free drinks and appetizers to those who RSVP (please RSVP to
KATIEJ@GMAIL.COM ). Happy Birthday Whistlin' Dixie, America, and
everyone elses' who's falls on this 3 day weekend. Actually, in case
I miss it, happy birthday to all!!!

Whistlin' Dixie's Texas Tavern
714 West 11th Ave
New York, NY 10019 (map)
212-349-4370

And if you feel like dropping some cash, the Chelsea Brewing Company has another option (including an open bar)

Public Works - Miro

I like to approach Joan Miro’s Moonbird from the direction of Sixth Avenue to the west, because when you do so, it becomes possible to imagine that the sculpture is gazing up in awe at the terrific view laid out before it. Facing the southern half of Grand Army Plaza, home to the tree-lined Pulitzer Memorial Fountain, it looks directly into the large well created by five buildings: the late medieval French baroque of the Bergdorf Goodman department store on the south side, the Art Deco of Bergdorf’s other building right across Fifth, the sterile International modernism of the GM building to the east, more Art Deco with the Sherry Netherland to the northeast, and more late medieval French baroque with the Plaza on the west, still an impressive and beautiful building despite all the internal meddling. This is undoubtedly one of my favorite public spaces, standing, along with the rest of the plaza to the north, as a kind of stately foyer to the open spaces of Central Park.

Magic Hat Tasting

Just got this in my email and being a big Magic Hat fan myself I thought I would share...

On Thursday, June 25, Dive 75 will host a Magic Hat tasting at 7pm.

We've featured these beers at all of our locations through- out the past few months, but we know how much our Dive 75 taps miss this brand so we've brought it back.

The Dive Bars have been big supporters of this fantastic New England brewery and in turn Magic Hat has supported us with their participation in our Connect Four Challenge. In case you missed it, it was a great event that helped raise money for charity.

This Thursday we feature flights of six different Magic Hat beers, which include the newest flavors, Wacko, Odd Notion Amber Rice Lager and the Odd Notion Belgian Style beer, along with complimentary cheese pairings. Our reps will be there to share with you the Magnificent Crapperator. Sounds intriguing, doesn't it? For those of you who need to know what you're getting into ahead of time, this is a game similar to Plinko. So, if you were a child of The Price is Right, you know what I'm talking about. Ping Pong balls will get dropped down something similar to the Plinko board and will land in cups of beer. The prize you get depends on which beer the ping pong ball lands in. Leave it to Magic Hat to come up with this game. This tasting is also going to kick off our "Follow the Hat" game. Every week a different Magic Hat beer will be featured at Dive 75, Dive Bar, Broadway Dive or Amsterdam 106. Once you have ordered the featured beer from that location you will get a raffle ticket, which will give you the chance to win great Magic Hat prizes. The only way you will know where to go or what to drink is by reading the newsletters so make sure you don't miss them! Let's start the game off right.

Anyone drinking Magic Hat Wacko this week at Dive 75 will get a raffle ticket. Good luck and Good drinking.

Generation Records on Thompson Street isn’t strictly a punk rock store, but…well, think of it like this: whereas in the old days, your standard record store carried all of the expected corporate rock with some underground stuff spattered here and there, Generation is like the inverse image of that. They have a fair share of mainstream stuff, but there’s no doubt – from the stacks to the ‘zines to the stuff that they usually play over the loudspeakers – which genre rules the roost. And why the hell not? The Village is one of the places punk was born in this country, so it seems only natural.

Billy's Bakery will open their new Tribeca location this Saturday, June 20th, and to celebrate they will be hooking you up with free samples. A little hung over from your Friday night? You'll get a free small coffee with every purchase from 7AM to 10AM. All day coupons for free cupcakes will be given out to customers while suplies last...But even if you miss out on the cupcakes they say they will be providing free samples of all of their products.

Want to try out your pastry chef skills? Billy's will also be running a contest all day. You bring in your creation and if it is deemed worthy your treat will be on sale for a week in July at one of their locations.

I've never tried Billy's, but a quick scan of their yelp reviews seem pretty promising...

Public Works - Botero

At the northwest corner of East 79th Street and Park Avenue stands the 900 Park building (map), a modernist, roughly thirty-floor structure. Should you approach it going south on the avenue, you will be able to get a good look at its spacious lobby, somewhat reminiscent of an airport lounge, through large windows on that side of the ground floor. But the object of our interest is around the corner, within the small island created by the building's rainbow-shaped driveway. There stands sentry Fernando Botero's Cat (possibly one of a litter; there is definitely another cat in Barcelona and one article I perused made reference to "similar works" in Chicago, Los Angeles, Madrid and Tokyo).
