Greenpeace podcast: Bill McKibben on Obama, 350 and Copenhagen

With December's crucial Copenhagen climate change summit fast approaching, we talk to 350.org founder Bill McKibben about the politics of climate change in the US, the challenges of building a successful mass movement, and how we set about not only restricting the amount of new CO2 we're pumping into the atmosphere, but reducing the levels that are already there.

350 is the number that leading scientists say is the safe upper limit
for carbon dioxide in our atmosphere - it's measured in "Parts Per Million".
So below 350 ppm is where we need to be to avoid runaway climate change. Currently the figure is around 390 and rising.

350.org will coordinate an international day of action on October 24 at hundreds of iconic places around the world - from the Taj Mahal to the Great Barrier Reef - with the aim of sparking a global movement to unite the public, media, and our political leaders behind the 350 goal.

In this edition of our podcast we talk to award-winning film maker Nick Broomfield about his latest project. 'A Time Comes' is an 18 minute documentary about our very own Kingsnorth Six, who were arrested for shutting down a coal-fired power station but found 'not guilty' at the subsequent trial.

But first let's head down to the Airplot to meet veteran comedian and star of fabled 1970s tv series 'The Good Life', Richard Briers. Richard turned up at our plot of land on the site of the proposed new runway at Heathrow to help us dig for victory in the campaign by starting an allotment – Christian Hunt grabbed a spade and went along to meet him.

Greenpeace podcast: how we campaign

In this episode of our podcast we're trying something new - James hosts a round-table discussion with solutions adviser Nathan, coal campaigner Emma and new web editor Christian about what Greenpeace stands for, and (in the run up to the UN Climate Change conference in Copenhagen this December) whether we're going the right way about tackling the greatest challenge we've ever faced - minimising the effects of climate change.

Are we spending too much time lobbying national politicians directly, and not taking enough action at a local level? Do we talk too much about problems and not enough about the solutions?

The aim is to give you a bit more insight into the sort of discussions that go on between campaigners when they're planning a campaign, the various tools and techniques at our disposal, and the ways in which they can be combined to address the massive environmental threats we all face.

Greenpeace podcast: Airplot and a week of Heathrow drama

The latest episode of our podcast is all about Heathrow and the plan to build a third runway. James visited the plot of land we've bought on the proposed site of the new runway, while Joss went to find out why organisations from the National Trust to the RSPB are also opposed to the idea. Meanwhile, Christian went to see what happened at the latest Climate Rush event down at Heathrow's Terminal 1.

Greenpeace podcast: A tale of two ships

Our podcast has skipped a month, but then with the Rainbow Warrior gracing our shores things have been a tad busy around here of late. As you may know, she was here in October as part of the international Quit Coal tour, and we went to meet some of the Greenpeace supporters who came to have a look round during the open boat days.

Also on our radar was the recent Indonesia tour undertaken by that other Greenpeace ship, the Esperanza. I was lucky enough to be there and while the crew were busy painting and blockading palm oil tankers in Sumatra, I was able to talk to them about what it's like being in the middle of a major piece of direct action.

And you'll have to excuse my froggy throat in the introduction, there's a cold going around the office.

Greenpeace podcast: another nuclear consultation was fixed

In this edition of our podcast we bring you far-flung forest news from Indonesia, where Jamie reports from the Esperanza on the 'Forests for Climate' tour, plus another Amazon update from James. But first, closer to home, nuclear campaigner Nathan Argent gives Greenpeace's reaction to the news that the government tried to fix another public consultation on new nuclear power, and ponders the implications for UK energy policy.

Greenpeace podcast: behind the scenes at the Kingsnorth Trial

In this special edition of our podcast, we take a behind the scenes look at the
extraordinary events that have already gone down in legend here at the
Greenpeace office. This month, six Greenpeace activists were acquitted of causing criminal damage to
Kingsnorth coal-fired power station, because they were acting to
prevent greater damage caused by climate change. The verdict has been hailed by some of the world's more hysterical media pundits as the official start of a state of anarchy in the UK.

I spent ten days with the defendants, finding out what was really happening, and how they were coping with the emotion, stress and drama of being at the centre of it all.

Greenpeace podcast: Coal gets the boot at Climate Camp

Slightly later than planned (blame summer holidays and technical snaffus) but in the latest edition of our podcast we take a trip to the recent Climate Camp. Somewhere in the region of two thousand people pitched up for ten days in the shadow of Kingsnorth power station in Kent, where plans to build a new coal-fired plant are afoot - with climate change in mind, this is probably not the wisest thing to do.

In between helping with activities like shifting hay bales and washing up, we talked to some of the other people from all over the country to find out what brought them to the camp. We also caught up with Dave Douglas of the National Union of Mineworkers who was there with Arthur Scargill to get involved in the debate, plus we hear from Jim Footner, one of our campaigners working on the issue, to find out why a coal-powered future is unrealistic.

In this edition, Greenpeace goes to a North London pub. For a change. But this time we're there to talk to the pub's owner about her pioneering sustainable seafood menus and how restaurants can influence their suppliers. We also head down to the Greenpeace field at Glastonbury festival to meet the designer of Eco Hab, a new kind of energy efficient home.

In this edition, we about the Indonesian end of our palm oil campaign from Hapsoro, one of our campaigners in Jakarta, and why getting Unilever on our side is a good start but not the whole answer. We also take a trip to the wilds of Middlesex where opposition to Heathrow's third runway is turned into a celebration with bands, costumes and performers to send a resounding 'No' to the government. And we hear from Bruce Nilles of the Sierra Club in the US about how potential changes on the political scene could nip the resurgance of coal in the bud.
