TOKYO — Toyota’s Prius was the top selling car in Japan during August for the 16th straight month, as incentives for green vehicles continued to boost sales of the hybrid.

The Prius, Toyota Motor Corp.’s best-selling gasoline-gas hybrid, sold 22,263 of the cars during the month, enough to secure the top spot ahead of Honda’s Fit compact at 17,258 vehicles, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said Monday.

But it was the lowest monthly total so far this year for the hybrid, sales of which may fade once government-backed tax breaks and incentives run out at the end of this month in Japan.

The Prius went on sale for the first time in 1997, beating rivals as the first mass-produced commercially available hybrid. Toyota’s hybrids currently span minivans, sport utility vehicles and luxury models.

The car has remained a best seller despite massive global recalls by Toyota of various models for issues including faulty floor mats and defective gas pedals.

Other hybrid offerings haven’t fared as well. Honda’s lower-priced Insight hybrid was 15th during August.

The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) and the other members of the Alternative Fuel Trade Alliance continue their nationwide training program on alternative fuel at a workshop for fleet managers today in Casa Grande, Ariz.

This free workshop is the fifth in a series of 14 training seminars across the country made possible by a .6 million grant from the Energy Department. The workshops cover alternative fuel quality, infrastructure, available vehicles, safety, environmental impacts, and latest technologies.

Each workshop culminates with a ride-and-drive event that gives fleet managers a chance to get behind the wheel of vehicles that run on alternative fuels. A Roush-equipped propane-fueled Ford F-250 truck owned by Ferrellgas will be available for test-driving at the Casa Grande event.

“These workshops bring together four alternative fuel industries to train fleet managers on the choices and options available for fleet vehicles,” said Brian Feehan, vice president of PERC. “By encouraging wider use of propane and other alternative fuel vehicles, we significantly increase our nation’s environmental and energy security goals.”

The Alternative Fuel Trade Alliance consists of PERC, the Renewable Fuels Association, the National Biodiesel Board, and the Clean Vehicle Education Foundation. Fuels represented include propane, ethanol, biodiesel, and compressed natural gas.

Each of the full-day collaborative workshops scheduled over the next two years will involve a site in the Energy Department’s Clean Cities program, which uses local coalitions to promote the use of alternative fuels such as propane. The Tucson Regional Clean Cities Coalition will host the Casa Grande workshop. A future workshop is scheduled for September 9 in Denver, with more dates and locations to be announced soon.

1. Caulk: it’s not just for the bathroom
Caulk is an excellent and inexpensive way to seal air leaks around your home. It can be used in the attic, around non-moving window panes (particularly between the window frame and the wall), in cracks in your home’s siding, around door jambs (where they meet the wall), and even at the base of the siding where it meets the foundation.

2. Install a programmable thermostat
This is a simple way to ensure that your furnace will not be working to heat your home when you don’t need it. It also covers for you in case you leave the house or go to bed and forget to turn down the thermostat.

3. Get your furnace serviced
Keeping your furnace in top working order is important for energy saving. Make sure it is running properly before winter begins to avoid repairs in the winter, when going without central heat while awaiting repairs can be uncomfortable or even dangerous.

4. Put a hat on your home
Insulating your attic is like putting a winter hat on your house. It keeps heat from escaping through the roof – remember, heat rises. While you are focusing on the top of your house, check your gutters and see that they are clean and free of debris, and check your chimney for air leaks. Such leaks can be sealed easily with caulk.

5. Consider storm windows
Interior storm windows are an inexpensive way to keep heat from escaping, and they can be taken down when winter is over. They even come in plastic sheets which are the least expensive option.

6. Insulate your water pipes
One of the concerns with turning the thermostat down is freezing pipes. Pipe insulation, though, is a relatively easy way to ensure against this occurring. Pipe sleeves or tubes made of foam can be purchased at most hardware stores, and are cut so that they fit right over the pipes.

7. Apply weather stripping to doors and windows
Weather stripping is inexpensive and easy to apply – it should be put along the edges of windows and doors, including basement and attic windows and the garage.

8. Weather-proof the front door
You may want to replace your existing front door with a more energy-efficient one, or add a storm door to your current one. The most important thing is to be sure the edges of the door are tightly sealed and square, which may mean a new door and frame are necessary.
