Dove Hunting in Mexico

The White-wing dove shooting here is nothing short of spectacular.  Thousands of acres of corn and sorghum fields are close to the lodge.  Extensive pre-hunt scouting keeps driving times to the shooting areas to a minimum.

• Dove hunting seasons: White-winged Dove: Early August through late of October | Mourning Dove: Early August through late February
• On the dove field, there will be two bird boys waiting for you with a nice chair and a cooler full of soft drinks and beer.
• Your shotgun and shells will be handed by the van driver.
• After the morning hunt there are two options:
  1. They will set up a nice table, chairs and a nice umbrella so you can sit back and relax with a drink of your preference in your hand, talking with your hunting companions about that afternoon hunt.
  2. Come back to the lodge for lunch. There will be plenty of time for you to have a drink by the pool or a Mexican siesta if needed.
• After that, he head out to the afternoon hunt for another exciting hunt.

Duck Hunting in Mexico

The Hacienda also offers spectacular duck hunting on Lake Guerrero for over 11 different species including: all 3 teals, pintails, widgeons, gadwalls, ringnecks, bluebills, shovelers, mottled ducks, redheads, canvasbacks, black bellied whistling tree ducks, and more…All of them usually in their full plumage.

• Waterfowl season is Early November through late February.
• Early in the morning your guides will drive to a big pong/small lake or to Lake Guerrero.
• Two hunters per blind and a guide who will assist you with the decoys, calling and picking up the dead birds.
• If available you can also hunt geese. They get Specks, Snows, Blues and Ross goose. We hunt over cut sorghum and corn fields. We use layout blinds, around 600-900 decoys and electronic calls.

Wild Bobwhite Quail Hunting in Mexico

The Wide Open Outfitters Hacienda conducts traditional walk-up quail hunts behind pointers on fence rows, tree and brush lines and in grain fields.  One sportswriter called them, “the wildest, fastest quail he had ever seen.”

Wolf Hunting Gear and Clothing Packing List

This wolf hunting gear list is intended to give you a general idea of what you’re going to need. The clothing and footwear you wear, and even some of the gear you’ll bring on your wolf hunt depends totally on the time of year. When choosing your gear, just use common sense and adjust accordingly.

Clothing and Apparel Recommendations for a Wolf Hunt

Boots

• Good quality hunting boots are absolutely essential. Base the boots you choose on the time of year you are hunting. Our team has had good luck with Kenetrek and Hoffman boots.
• Suggested Qty: 1 pair

Top Base Layer

• Merino wool is the ideal base layer for extended hunts as it resists odor-causing bacteria and will keep you warmer than synthetics when it becomes damp.
• We also suggest a mid-weight long sleeved t-shirt style, quick-drying stretch fleece base layer with a zippered neck.
• Suggested Qty: 2 each

Hoody

• You can probably plan on wearing a hoody all day. A good hoody is a great piece of apparel that slides right into your layering system. Use it as a lightweight outer layer on mild days or a mid-layer on cooler ones.

Bottom Base Layer

• Merino wool is the ideal base layer for extended hunts as it resists odor-causing bacteria and will keep you warmer than synthetics when it becomes damp.

• A vest that is impervious to moisture and continues to retain heat is a good addition to your insulation layer, or a core outer piece on cold days.
• Check your regulations to see if the state you are hunting requires hunter orange. If orange is required, we like King’s Blaze Soft Shell Vest.

Top Insulation

• Bring a good insulation layer that is lightweight, weatherproof, packable and high on warmth. The SITKA Kelvin Lite Down Jacket is a good choice.

Pants

• A good pair of pants with reinforced waterproof knees and seat will keep you comfortable and dry. Adjust according to season.
• If you’re hunting in the late season, insulated pants are a good option for cold temperatures.

• Use your best judgment when it comes to choosing your rain gear.

Gloves, Beanie and Cap

• We would suggest you bring both lightweight and mid-weight gloves for any hunt.
• If you’re hunting in the winter, a heavy, insulated glove will be needed as well.
• A good beanie based on the time of year is critical. The SITKA Beanie provides lightweight, low-profile warmth for those brisk early-season days and easily stuffs into your pocket when the temperature picks up.
• We highly recommend having a ball cap.

Misc. Clothing

• Neck Gaiter – Great for keeping your neck warm on snowmobile rides. If you’ve never worn a neck gaiter while hunting, once you wear one, you’ll never go back.
• Gaiters – A waterproof gaiter will keep water, snow, and debris out of your boot and extend the life of your pants by reducing lower leg wear-and-tear.

Wolf Hunting Gear Recommendations

Backpack

• A good backpack is critical for keeping your wolf hunting gear organized. We recommend using EXO Mountain Gear backpacks.
• A rainfly isn’t a requirement but is great for keeping your pack dry.
• Suggested Qty: 1

Binoculars

• Depending on the wolf hunt, a good set of binoculars can be essential or just a convenience. While not a requirement on some hunts, good optics are HIGHLY recommended.
• We also recommend that you bring a binocular harness with you.
• Lens cleaner and an anti-fog kit are something you’re going to want to have in your pack.
• Suggested Qty: 1

Calls

• Distress Calls – With the right sounding call, a good coyote hunter can call in a wolf, but a wolf’s territory is five times bigger than a coyote’s, which means the biggest problem in calling them is the time you have to put in to locate the roaming pack. Any good predator call that you use for coyote hunting will work. If the state you’re hunting allows you to use an electronic predator call, then you should go that route.
• Wolf Howler – Many hunters can howl with their voice, but there are a few good howlers on the market. We’ve used the Rocky Mountain Alpha Wolf Howler with some success.

Misc. Items

• Rifle Sling – Not required, but great when hiking.
• Boot Wax
• GPS – We like the Garmin inReach.
• Trekking Poles – These are a great tool when hiking the steep terrain.
• Headlamp – Having a good headlamp are a must-have on your wolf hunt, and we recommend having two (with extra batteries).
• Hunting Knife – While there are lots of good knives out there to choose from, we use the Havalon EXP for our every day carry, and the Havalon Piranta-EDGE is essential in every pack. Another good choice would be the Outdoor EDGE Razor-LITE.
• First Aid Kit – We recommend always having a compact medical kit in the pack.
• Patching Tape – Not a Requirement but great to have any time for quick repairs if needed. We like to use Tenacious Tape.
• Baby Wipes
• Mole Skin – In addition to Mole Skin, you should have some GlacierGel in your pack. It’s the next generation in blister dressing.
• Paracord – Not a requirement, but about 30 feet of Paracord or rope is great to have any time.

A few key things to remember in addition to your wolf hunting gear:

• Consider purchasing Hunt Insurance.
• If you are hunting with an outfitter, Please let them know your travel plans one month in advance of your hunt. Whether you are driving or flying they would like to know so they can accommodate airport pickup and parking if needed.
• Also, remember to bring all hunting licenses and tags you will need for the hunt.
• Please bring all medication you will need and let your outfitter and guide know of any medical issues or conditions prior to the start of the hunt.
• Check the regulations on hunter orange requirements.
• Remember to bring tips for your guide, cooks, and packers. The standard tip for a guide is 15% to 20% of your hunt cost.
• Also, remember to train for your hunt as this will make the trip more enjoyable.

Advanced Archery Elk Hunting Tactics

• 

  Get away from people.

• At the end of the day the wind is key to everything “elk”. Control your scent and learn how to use thermals.
• Mature bulls bugle regularly all day. Remember that, and practice with your elk calls during the off season.
• Know your hunting area intimately.
• Some hunters feel that bedding area is sacred and not to be messed with. Bold hunters will get on the same elevation and sneak in on a bull in his bed if the wind is right.
• Chasing a bull is a waste of time. Be patient, they aren’t going anywhere…. unless you are hunting agricultural area or there is a lot of pressure.
• Every bull will come in screaming if you hit him at the right time.
• Use your nose. When you smell a bull, get your bird dog on and use the wind.
• Be ready for any and every opportunity.
• Be set up prior to any calling settings. Check lanes so you don’t get caught with your pants down.
• Bugle to find bulls as opposed to cow calling.
• Match your bugle to the class of bull you are targeting.
• Listen to podcasts to learn archery elk hunting tactics from seasoned hunters.
• When you get close, use the “far away bugle”.
• Stop calling once they get so close that you’re going to get caught (if you are solo hunting).
• Learn how to ambush elk.
• Having the right elk hunting gear is important, but nothing will replace time in the field.
• There are some very affordable, high success guided archery elk hunts out there.
• Hopefully, now you’ll need to learn patience so that you can wait on your taxidermist.

Bowhunting Gear

Tuning a bow isn’t has hard as it sounds.

I recently purchased a new bow and have been going through the set up and tune. What a pain this is; tying in nocks, peeps, drop away rests, sighting in, setting Center Shot, Axle To Axle, Brace Height, and Cam Timing. Good grief, I should just take it to the bow shop! Nope too stubborn and broke now that I have a new bow.

Here are few things to check and keep checking throughout the season:

Things to Look For when Tuning a Bow

• Check idler. Look for damage on the string channel etc.
• Check idler alignment.
• Check QCC (quick clip connectors) for cracks, alignment, and damage.
• Check idler axle for smooth operation etc.
• Check String, even one damaged strand can lead to disaster, replace it! The string should be replaced every year or two max.
• Check cam. Look for damage on the string channel etc.
• Check cam timing.
• Check Cables and yoke ends.
• Check serving anywhere you have serving. Fix or replace.
• Check all bolts. Quiver, sights, rest, stabilizers.
• Check limbs. Look for any damage to ends, axle points, cups.
• Check cable guides, roller or slider for damage or wear.

Examine Your Release Aid

Primarily just make sure the strap and buckle or velcro on your archery release is in good condition and the jaws and trigger are in proper working order. I happen to have a spare.

Check all the arrows in your possession.

If you shoot carbon make very certain they are not cracked, shows signs of stress, or are damaged anywhere and that nocks are in good or new condition. Nocks are cheap. I had a arrow blow up on a shot at the largest muley I have had a chance at. It was 10F, the arrow exploded due to a crack I had not noticed. It could have been a disaster if that broken arrow decided to penetrate my arm vs scattering in front of me.

Bad nocks can cause a dry fire situation and that will most likely wind up destroying your bow. I happen to have hunting arrows and practice arrows. Make certain you have the correct spine for your set up. I have seen a lot of problems associated with incorrect spine.

Tuning a Bow

If all is in good condition, simply shoot your bow. I suggest shooting the broadheads to see how and where they fly. A properly tuned bow and arrow combo will almost always result in broadheads and field points having the same point of impact (POI). If you are having broadhead flight issues now is the time to figure out what the problem is instead of a few days before the hunt.

HINT: bow shops are slammed from mid August to October here in the west. If you need to start from scratch try paper tuning first, then walk back method, then broadhead tuning, and broadhead walk back.

Now you need to shoot. Shoot a lot!

If you start shooting now your form and muscle memory will be ready for archery season. It seems like I shoot well right off the bat but then I tend to get out of whack before coming back to shooting well again. So for me, I need to shoot enough to NOT THINK the shot. That usually means several hundred rounds in a few weeks in the 50-60 yard range. Generally, if I shoot tight consistent groups without worrying about “what if I miss” thinking I am good to go.

Shop Archery Gear

Your shooting ability should be based on your worst groups on your worst day.

In other words if you ever put an arrow outside a 4 inch circle at any distance you should not consider that your maximum bow range. This may seem harsh but most bowhunters skills are drastically reduced in real hunting conditions.

Are you as good on game as you are on paper?

Do you practice in awkward positions with your hunting clothes on? What about shooting your bow with an elevated heart rate? Your 4 inch groups will probably be more like 8 inches in the field!

Tips to help you extend your maximum bow range.

1. Properly tune your bow. This is critical, especially when you are shooting broadheads.
2. Practice most of the time at ranges well beyond your comfort zone. If most of the time you practice at 60 yards, your 40 yard shot will feel like a chip shot.
3. Practice in hunting clothes, gloves, hats and face masks from awkward positions. Positions used in the field.
4. Focus on the alignment of your bow and watch the bubble level on the sight. Proper alignment is crucial for distance shooting.
5. Follow through. At short distance you can get away with bad habits but at long distances, form is crucial. Relax your grip and try to remain motionless until the arrow hits the target.

Alaska brown bear hunts on the Alaska Peninsula in Unit 9

This is one of the best areas in the world for hunting brown bear. We have plenty of big bears but you still have to be ready to go and get them.

One of our best brown bear hunts on the Alaskan peninsula alternate between fall and spring yearly. On even years they are spring hunts, and they are during the fall on odd years. Choose between a tent camp in an exclusive guide us area, or a hunt out of town where you will be staying in a Bed and Breakfast. Both of these hunts are good ones, but the tent hunt is better as far as trophy quality.

Spring Hunts

The Alaska Peninsula near Cold Bay, Alaska is one of our premier brown bear hunting areas. It is only hunted on even numbered years during the spring, and is hands down the best location for trophy sized brown bears in Alaska. This region is good, if not better than Kodiak Island for huge coastal brown bears.

• May 10-31 (only on even numbered years)
• Units 9E and D *more SCI record bears have come from these two units than any other in Alaska
• Most bears will square over 10′! *our largest came from this unit in 2016 and squared 11′ 2″ with a 30.6″ skull
• Hunting is from spike camps accessed by a Super Cub with large tundra tires. You will be hunting near the Bering Sea where bears will be searching for carcasses as they emerge from their dens.

Fall Hunts

If you would prefer to hunt in the fall, and are truly after a 10′ brown bear, you want to consider this hunt in GMU 9E out of Pt Heiden, Alaska. You will be spot-and-stalk or stand hunting primarily in the low country along the salmon streams and rivers which will be full of returning sockeye and silver salmon. The bears will be fishing to gain weight needed for hibernation.

• October 1-21 (only on odd numbered years)
• Unit 9E
• The goal on this hunt is a bear over 9′, but they can get up to and over 10’5″ if you get lucky. *each year we take at least one bear from this area that will qualify for SCI and B&C.

In the Fall, we also offer a lodge-based brown bear hunt

If you want to hunt out of a Historic Alaska Lodge and have the opportunity at a ten footer, then this is the hunt for you!

*This is a lodge-based hunt 90% of the time. We’ve had elderly gentlemen come back to the lodge after a day in the field and shoot their bear from the deck. Although this is not standard, it has happened. This is a good hunt for hunters with physical limitations, such as wheelchair or mobility issues.

• October 1-21 (only on odd numbered years)
• Unit 9E
• The goal on this hunt is a bear over 9′, but they can get up to and over 10’5″ if you get lucky. *each year we take at least one bear from this area that will qualify for SCI and B&C.

But for those of you who have even been thinking about going on an archery elk hunt in the rut you better watch out! Once you are exposed to Archery Elk Flu you will find yourself experiencing nasty symptoms.

Symptoms of Archery Elk Flu

• Panoramic Myopia – which consists of experiencing such incredible and breathtaking views of wild and high places that you are literally blinded to the world around you. You may find upon return to civilization that colors don’t seem as vivid and the noise of society is near deafening.
• Screaming Bull Fever – which consists of waterfalls of sweat pouring from the palms of your hands; tornado-like breathing and near loss of control of basic motor skills.
• Full Draw Blues – which has been found to induce extreme muscle burn; the shakes; and bouts of intent prayer, followed by cursing; the what-ifs; and even maniacal laughter.
• No Hunting Nausea – quite often triggered by state draw results, or the closing of a season.

This sickness is not to be trifled with.

This is a true pandemic that sweeps the western half of our nation every fall. And the symptoms I discussed above barely even  scratch the surface. The nastiness that archery elk hunting can cause on the unsuspecting hunter is quite terrifying. In a matter of minutes it can put you on the lowest of lows or the highest of highs. That is both the worst, and best thing about Archery Elk Flu.

We suggest that you wear a camo face mask…even face pain has strangely been found to work quite well. But even with precautions, it is a fickle condition and overall has been found to be highly contagious. Even addictive.

Our Most Affordable Archery Elk Hunts:

Archery elk hunts tend to be more affordable than rifle hunts, and some of them are in are in areas that are covered up in elk.

Wyoming Elk Hunts

Wyoming has great trophy quality. Any mature six point is a good bull in most units, but our bowhunters take bulls over 320 inches in Wyoming almost every year.

• You have to apply for a tag in for Wyoming (some areas have 90% draw odds with no points).
• The elk population in Wyoming is very strong and in high density.

Idaho Public Land Hunts

The outfitters that we work with in Idaho have some really good, affordable archery elk hunts. We consider any mature Idaho bull a great trophy, but our hunters often get chances at bulls over 300 inches on these hunts. These are typically pack-in, horseback hunts with wall tent accommodations. You’ll be deep enough into the backcountry that you shouldn’t have to worry about running into many other hunters.

• Idaho elk tags are available over the counter.
• Depending on the unit and/or outfitter, you can also add a mule deer.
• These hunts are more affordable if they’re guided 2-on-1, so bring a buddy.

New Mexico Private Land with Landowner Vouchers Included

This hunt has two different kinds of ranches. One (almost 60,000 acres), is very easy flat to rolling terrain with TONS of elk. When I say TONS, that is exactly what I mean. When we scouted this ranch late season, this year, our guys saw over 300 elk in 5 days. This is a drive around, bugle from the truck and work in on bulls that respond, type hunt. Most of the bulls will be 5×5 and 6×6 with a reasonable chance at a 300 inch bull. There are water hole opportunities for those that can’t cover country at all. This is a very high success hunt with easy hunting conditions on good but not great bulls. This outfitter went 100% success with his archery clients last year.

The other ranch is very high altitude (9,000 ft) and classic rugged elk terrain. The ranch is 8,000 acres and backs up to a very landlocked wilderness area that makes for more ground than anyone, on one hunt, can cover. You will need to be physically fit on this hunt and this ranch has high success (for physically fit hunters) on bulls over 300″. This ranch is not well-roaded and clients will need good gear and be ready for a lot of hiking for the big boys.

Colorado Public Land

This hunt will be another wilderness pack-in horseback hunt. You will be hunting in very steep terrain and at high altitude (9,000-12,000 ft). There are a TON of bulls on this hunt as well. Every client we placed last year had shot opportunities on bulls and raved about the outfitter and his area.

If you want a classic Rocky Mountain elk hunt in Colorado, deep in, and all alone, this is the one. The trophy quality on the elk here are 5×5 and 6×6 bulls with chances at bulls in the low 300’s. The key to success, and enjoyment on this hunt is being in shape. If you are in shape this is truly an epic adventure at a hell of a good price. This hunt is cheap and guided 2 on 1 for a 5 day hunt.

You’ll see terrain variations from open prairies to dense aspen canyons.  Game density in GMU 52 is good and quality of bulls is typically in the 280-310” range, with something in the 320”+ considered a trophy.   Early season archery hunts can be warm and pre season scouting can be extremely helpful as you’ll want to have water sources found as bulls will be frequently looking for water in early season.  As the rut picks ups bulls will be rounding up cows and locating bulls with bugles can be an extremely fun and effective way to hunt.

Unit Boundary Description

New Mexico’s Unit 52 begins at the intersection of US 64 and the east boundary of the Tierra Amarilla grant and running north along the eastern boundary of the grant to the Colorado-New Mexico state line, then east along the state line to its intersection with US 285, then south along US 285 to its junction with US 64 at Tres Piedras, then west along US 64 to its intersection with the east boundary of the Tierra Amarilla grant.
