LOOK-BACK Second Annual Clearfork Music Festival

We live in funkytown, y’all, and we have the fests to prove it. Clearfork 2014, summed up in a word: funky.

Transplanted to Panther Island Pavilion this year, Clearfork 2014 welcomed the crowd with yet another beautiful backdrop of the city with three stages throughout the wide, hilly space. It was hot, and I mean hot, but between constant movement between the sets, a massive blue tent and cool-off tent in the center, nothing we all couldn’t handle.

The first set we got the chance to check out was Andy Frasco and his horde of feature artists getting the feet moving from the start. Frasco brought with him a classic drumline, Superman shredding on the guitar, saxophones, keyboards, the full monty, transporting the crowd back in time with a modern funky twist.

Over on the solar powered stage (“fuck you, sun!” the guys at Son of Stan graciously shouted later in the day), a smorgasbord of artists delighted people of all ages and walks of life. Jetta in the Ghost Tree gave us that old school, Queens of the Stone Age-esque groove with a delicious kick of keyboard flowing throughout the set. Johnny Cooper Trio lifted everyone’s spirits with three wonderfully talented funk artists giving the genre a punky spin and loving the heck out of every moment they spent together on stage.

GoodBAMMSho veterans We’rewolves returned for Clearfork this year and although we’ve seen them at least six times in the last year, they proved yet again why they’re one of the city’s best new artists. Honestly, I still have “Kindly Left Behind” in my head and I’m not quite sure it’s left sine we caught them at the Double Wide in January.

Hometown loves Animal Spirit drew probably the most dedicated crowd straight up to the front, including the saxophonists from The Effinays and the dudes from We’rewolves (diggin’ the local love which was ultra present that day). Son of Stan brought the party back and left everyone clearly in awe of the detail that goes into mega hits like “Noxeema” and “Corsica” which fit in perfectly with the end of summer and back-to-school.

Speaking of which, curse the TCU opening game for likely contributing for the lacking crowd numbers. At least we won.

The Main Stage gave us the folk with Lincoln Durham kicking up the attitude, all while working around a broken guitar string and improvising quite while, if you ask us. Wild Child fulfilled every modern hippy’s desires with a set that made you want to kick of your shoes and dance with a loved one, or even a stranger. Even on the KTL Stage, Holy Moly left everyone laughing and kicking back with a wonderfully personal set.

And yet again The Effinays brought back that same energy from last year’s Clearfork to this year’s, tossing frisbies around and amping up the crowd interaction with a dance party and members running around frantically, breaking out the harmonica and serving up some excellent solos.

Kitten Interview with Chloe Chaidez

Last week we sat down with Chloe Chaidez of LA based rock band Kitten to talk tour, critics and the bands first self titled full album...

GBS:
So this is your first show at Dada?

Chaidez:
It's our second actually. Last time with Charli XCX on tour, probably our fourth time in Dallas.

GBS:
You've been touring since 2010 - what do you think of Dallas?

Chaidez:
I love it. The more I come the more I know it. It's like, "This is the strip, I know this!"

GBS:
We're glad to have you back. We read that the LA Times called your music "surprisingly ageless." Do you think your mix of influences in your sound would give them that impression?

Chaidez:
I think our music is just based on, it's really song-based and, you know, I work really hard on just I guess the songwriting aspect regardless, so that the different elements surrounding - most of the music is played on guitar but still translates, but I think that may be where that comes from.

GBS:
How do you think your music has grown or expanded since your first EP Sunday School?

Chaidez:
So extremely. Yeah, I think Sunday School I was really just discovering what I wanted to do musically. I knew I liked to sing and certain things, but I think what I was going for the EP was a more band oriented sound. All of that. And then with Cut It Out my brother taught me, got me more into electronic sounds and different things, and at the same time heavier new wave, bands like Tears for Fears, that's how I got deeper into that.

GBS:
Just to say we asked, what key is your song G# actually in?

Chaidez:
In G#. That's why it's called that - I wish there was a cooler story for that.

GBS:
You just wrapped up a tour with The Neighborhood. How was the experience of sharing the road with those guys?

Chaidez:
Awesome. Really cool. They're great - Jesse [Rutherford] is such a force, they have such a vision, and their fans are unbelievable and so very incredible.

GBS:
I see your fans all out here with kitten ears.

Chaidez:
Yeah. They're really cool.

GBS:
After your show in Dallas tonight you have four more dates scheduled for this tour. Do you have more live dates in the works after a quick break?

Chaidez:
We're either going to Europe to do some festivals or maybe another run in the U.S. Some of these cities have been awesome, like D.C. and Austin, so going out again to those places. We've only done one European tour - definitely the drives are much shorter so that's super cool, but seeing the countrysides, a huge place, and the different kinds of people country people, city people, that's always cool.

When the headlining band doesn’t come on until after eleven thirty, you know it’s going to be a great night. No sarcasm—I mean it. Titus Andronicus, the punk band that constitutes the one and only reason why I am proud to be from Jersey, made the hours in close quarters well worth the wait.

Lost Boy ?, a self-described psychedelic punk ensemble currently based in Brooklyn, kicked off the performances around eight with songs off their new EP, Wasted, released May 27th of this past year. They also have a full-length album worth a listen—jangly melodies and twitchy synth beats lend USA USA the pedigree to represent its post-grunge roots. The real question, however, is always whether or not the band in question can pull it off live: lost boy ? certainly gave a good showing, and should be on your ‘to watch’ list for the next few months. So, go do that social media thing, and check them out.

Bluesy grunge rockers Slothrust amped up the ambiance, showering the cloud of concert-goers straggling around the stage with an insane rendition of their killer single Crockpot, along with some decidedly snarky commentary, courtesy of singer and lead guitarist Leah Wellbaum. 7:30 am, a track off their second album, Of Course You Do, opened up the dance floor (read: mosh pit) for a much-welcomed reprieve from standing in place and bobbing one’s head awkwardly. In case you missed their Brooklyn showing, check out their next two tour dates—in Boston on the 17th, at TT the Bear’s, and then the 19th at the 1.21 Gigawatts Festival in New York. For further updates, take a look at some variegated media outlets.

Philadelphia trio Beach Slang followed, with songs off their inaugural EP, Who Would Want Anything So Broken?—just released this past April—and threw in some self-deprecating charm and experimental material to boot. With soft, easy vocals over decidedly heavy bass riffs and lead guitar, the most promising rookies on the block have definitely got the potential for future heft. In case you missed Beach Slang in Brooklyn last Friday, be sure to save a day in September, when they go on tour with the infamous indie rockers, Modern Baseball. That way, you can say you saw them live ‘before they were cool’, while snapping your organic gum and wearing your second-hand Chucks.

Last—but most certainly not least—Jersey-birthed punk kids and current hot topic Titus Andronicus took the stage. As every chronic concert-goer discovers eventually, there are bands that sound like a leaking garbage truck live, and there are bands that sound like a celestial chorus.

Luckily, Titus fell into the latter group—as expected, of course.

Brand new self titled debut LP released last month. LA based band Kitten is four cities shy of wrapping up what we assume will be the first leg of the summer tour. We will find out the answer tomorrow night when we sit down with Chloe Chaidez and crew at Club Dada just before the music starts.

Current tour mates and LA gang Dear Boy will be out in support. Having released their namesake debut EP back in September.

Local favorite Jessie Frye will also be out to open for Kitten with her own electronic influenced waves of love. No secret around these parts at all that her latest album Obsidian has been received well in North Texas. Jessie's latest video release for "Shape Of A Boy" caused quite a media stir and probably some relationship problems for guys who might have been caught watching her video one too many times!

Take a few hours away from the weekly grind tomorrow night and come join us for a mix of ambiance, shoegaze, indie pop and more in Deep Ellum.

GBS:
How was the race?

Conner:
Awesome, a lot of fun!

Chase:
I won!

Jonas:
I have to admit I kinda saw it coming!

GBS:
What were the official standings one thru three?

Conner:
Chase took home first prize! I was second place and Jonas was third.

Jonas:
Our lives!

GBS:
Let’s talk about the upcoming second album for a minute. Self titled or EPONYMOUS release on July, 29th. You guys recorded all of it at Ferralog Studios?

Yes!

GBS:
Was this your first time working with or being produced by Nathan Adamson & Jonathan Jackson in the studio?

Conner:
It's our first time in that role but we've been friends with them for awhile. Played in other bands with him and been around the studio for ages. We decided to go ahead and pull the trigger on the whole album thing.

Chase:
JJ (Johathan) was the producer of the first album. So we had worked with him before and he was more after the fact. After we had everything recorded. He came and kinda helped us narrow it all down to how we wanted the album to sound.

GBS:
Your first album Smoke from the Sails was recorded live in one day if my facts straight? How did recording this album with multi-tracking vs live feel to you? More creative, less or no different?

Jonas:
One day! One very long day! We were able to spend a little more time obviously. I remember I had to leave to play a gig half way through the day and then come back to help finish it.

Chase:
This one we did a lot of the basic instruments like drums, rhythm guitar and bass. We did a lot of that live but to be able to go in and take time on those overdubs like lead guitar and vocals. Especially background vocals to be able to take our time and we could write more parts to it. I thought that was a lot of fun!

Conner:
You can musically express yourself a little more clearly. Have the time to look at things, change things and explore ideas.

Chase:
It's almost like the first album was how the songs were, like how we played them live. This album we were actually able to kinda expand the songs a little and kinda find some new parts.

Conner:
In the same vein we recorded this album all on tape, one inch tape. So we had to work out in the studio the way we wanted it. You can't just do a million takes on tape. You have more time to do stuff but the stakes were a little higher.

GBS:
What about an official date for the Goodnight Ned Live Release Show? Can we reveal it?

Yes! July 24th.

Chase:

Conner:

GBS:
So “Father Ned Misty” (Goodnight Ned), “Androgynous” (Dead Flowers) & “Jank City Jacket” (Somebody’s Darling) that had to be a fun show a few weeks back at Gas Monkey?

Jonas:
To see two of our favorite bands to be able to pull off some really cool bands and ourselves trying to struggle through it. Father John Misty is one of our favorite songwriters!

Conner:
It was an unexpected blessing for us too. The fact that we took on this project and worked really hard to make it come together.

GBS:
Where can I get a Goodnight Ned Koozie and how much? Best looking Koozie’s I’ve seen in a while, no b.s.!

GBS:
You guys did Red Bull Sound Select back in May with Quaker City
Nighthawks and Somebody’s Darling. That basically placed you into the Red Bull Sound Select family with a ton of other extremely talented bands across the country. Any moment that stood out about that particular show?

Conner:
The whole thing was just an honor to be apart of it.

Jonas:
An arm wrestling competition... that was one of the most interesting things other than playing the show!

Conner:
Those are a couple of our favorite local bands. Quaker City
Nighthawks and Somebody's Darling. It was a cool night! The first I think all local Red Bull Sound Select. It was just a good vibe from start to end. Turned out to be above and beyond expected.

Chase:
We had the same line up at Granada a year ago and to be able to do that again with the same two bands was so much fun!

GBS:
Do you guys have more live dates or a summer tour planned for after the live release show coming up?

Chase:
We're working on that right now. Kinda getting the details of it worked out. Right now we're just focused on this one mainly.

Death From Above 1979 Announce 'The Physical World'

Dance-punk golden boys Death From Above 1979 announced a second album on Tuesday, complete with track listings, international tour dates, and a tentative reunion. Best of all, they dropped a new single off The Physical World: ‘Trainwreck 1979’, ripe for the drooling over.

Hey, it took them a decade, but they’re back—after the international tour following DFA 1979’s first album, You’re A Woman, I’m A Machine, the eccentric duo announced a split. Jesse F. Keeler, the band’s bassist, synthesist, and provider of backing vocals, posted the update to the group’s official forum, citing differences in musical style, creative goals, and personal reasons. This was August 2009. By February 2011, the two had reunited; cut to 2012-2013, and the band was already doing informal live shows with experimental material, in order to ‘share…and work out the kinks,’ according to lead vocalist and drummer Sebastien Granger.

Another two years later, and here we are—sitting pretty with their new single, a complete track listing for The Physical World, and a revamped sound. It’s still immediately recognizable as DFA, but the vibe they have going on is much more raw—stripped down and bass-drum heavy, a veritable electropunk powerhouse. Vocal innovations similar to the a capella opening of ‘Dead Womb’—the heavy breathing in the beginning of ‘Trainwreck’ comes immediately to mind—and Granger’s falsetto riffs are on point, lending the new track a rhythmically eerie undertone. While it’s not as ‘traditionally punk’ as older creations, ‘Trainwreck 1979’ and The Physical World show incredible potential, along with some well-earned artistic growth.

The Physical World, produced by Dave Sardy of RHCP fame, is due out 9 September 2014. DFA’s international tour kicks off a few days before, with two consecutive shows at Riot Fest Toronto (Sept. 6-7), before jetting over to Koln, Germany. The North American leg of the tour starts up again 31 October in New Orleans. Merch and album pre-orders? Right here. There’s even a vinyl, for all you aural purists out there.

Indie Rockers Incoming: Titus Andronicus Takes Brooklyn, Breaks Big News

No, no—not Shakespeare’s homicidal military man. We meant the band. If you haven’t heard Titus Andronicus’ witty lyricisms by now, you should probably make a point of it. As a ragtag bunch of indie kids, they’ve certainly made the news, what with so many upcoming projects: just this past Wednesday, a new single was announced, as was the schedule for a series of vinyl releases. ‘Stranded’ (On My Own)’, is already up on the band’s site, and is just waiting for some eager little ears. Hop to, music junkies—the general has spoken.

On July 7th, the band started releasing comportments of what they’re calling the ‘7-Inch’ series. Confirmed tracks on the 7-Inch series—#SEVENSEVENINCHES, if you want to tweet about it—encompass a pretty wide variety of sound so far. Some will feature re-releases of earlier material: think 2008’s The Airing of Grievances and other youngling LP material; the rest will showcase newer sounds. The July 7th cut will feature the aforementioned new single, ‘Stranded (On My Own)’, with The Wicked Kind’s ‘Sport’ as the B-side. Be excited. Be very, very excited.

The Jersey-based rockers may not have been making as much noise as usual since their 2012 album, Local Business, but they’ve definitely had something in the works: September has a thirty-song rock opera, with accompanying videos, slated for reveal as well. Rock operas have always had mixed reception—the discrepancy between high art and low art, and all of those solipsistic shenanigans—but we can only expect the best from our Jersey boys.

From what we were able to glean from several interviews, the band has thrown out a loose outline of the rock opera—a young man struggling with self-actualization, and trudging through a quest for self-identity. Overdone? Not necessarily—the key to any good narrative is how the story is told, not the content of it. Seeing what Titus Andronicus comes out with this fall should be interesting, to say the least. They certainly have the musical chops to do so, not to mention catchy, biting lyrics to go along with it.

Lastly: If you’re a tri-state local, be sure to get to the Brooklyn Night Bazaar on July 11th: Titus Andronicus is playing live for free (yes, we said free), supported by the Buzzcocks. Other New England locales to be graced with the band’s presence throughout August include Hamden (CT), Pawtucket (RI), Portland (ME), Portsmouth (NH), Burlington (VT), Albany (NY), Easthampton (MA) and Cambridge (MA), ending in New York City proper. Phantogram + Bad Things Light Up Nashville

Phantogram not only put on a visually stunning show last night at Marathon Music Works but they drew out an enormous crowd, packing the venue with a wide-ranging audience. So much so, that should you leave your coveted spot, you’d be lucky to even get back to it.

The opening act for Phantogram was Bad Things, largely known as “Shaun White’s band,” however, the group proved themselves as musicians as well. The crowd danced and swayed with the music regardless of having any previous knowledge of the ensemble. Their songs were catchy and eclectic which made the already energized audience primed for Phantogram to take the stage. This was Bad Things last night touring with the band and Davis LeDuke, lead singer, made it memorably so, closing out their set by jumping down from the stage and body surfing into the crowd.

There was a stirring feeling in the air as the electronic duo took the stage and the throng of people applauded. With a name like Phantogram it’s clear that visuals are important in more ways than one for the band.

We were met with a striking display of multi-colored strobes and lights, the synchronization of which coordinated with the high-energy put out by the group and illuminated the music, matching the mood of each song and putting the audience in a trance. Sarah Barthel (vocals and keyboard) and Josh Carter (vocals and guitar) provided boundless chemistry on stage.

They not only complemented one another vocally but by matching their animated presence as well. Barthel’s unique voice gives the band its original and unparalleled sound not only in recordings but live too.

Their set list ranged in the new and old, performing songs not only from their newest album, Voices, released earlier this year, but fan favorites from Eyelid Movies. Just like the band themselves the crowd was lively, dancing and singing along with a lingering buzz as the show ended.

7th Annual Dia De Los Toadies in September

Panther Island Pavilion seems to be quite the hotspot in the last few years, and the annual Dia De Los Toadies event will reinforce that while bringing some Texas favorites alongside our punk pride and joy.

The lineup was just announced in full Tuesday for the two-day event's seventh year September 12 through 13. One thing's for sure - you're going to get your fair share of Texas music here, but in all different forms.

Naturally the festival will feature sweet local food trucks Bellatrino, So-Cal Tacos, Gypsy Scoops and more. Hopefully the weather will still be kind to us come September, because between the huge fields and river, there's plenty of outdoor adventures to be havin'.

Oh hell yes, it's going down at K1 Speed in Arlington next Monday!

July, 7th at 6:30pm to be exact! Everyone should come out and watch/race with our GoodBAMMSho crew as we smoke the Goodnight Ned guys in a "Top Electric" 60mph corner drifting kart race of EPIC PROPORTIONS!

After the race we will be interviewing the guys to find out details about their upcoming self titled Second Album which drops on July, 29th! We're also going to find out about the album launch party happening soon and get you all the info.

Reel Big Fish & Ska at Trees last Friday

Everybody's doing the fish. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

At least that's what the hundreds of people at Deep Ellum's Trees were doing at Friday night's Reel Big Fish show.

But it's not always the case that the opening act is a member of the headlining act. But at Trees Friday night, Ryland Steen, the drummer for Reel Big Fish, opened up with an acoustic set.

Next openers Survay Says kicked it up a notch, got the crowd dancing to their high-energy, punk-ska sound we all know and love. They definitely got the crowd primed and ready for the feature performers.

After much anticipation, Reel Big Fish took the stage as excitement filled the venue. By they time they got to the chorus of "I Want Your Girlfriend To Be My Girlfriend, Too," ska-lovers were jumping and moving with the band onstage.

In fact, the whole set was laden with all the hits a die-hard fan would want them to play, but also easily accessible songs for new ears. Even the occasional circle pit formed in the center as the horn line blared on and played with genres.

But the set ended and very soon afterward, an encore blasted through the venue not heard before. It was the World Cup soccer chant that helped transition the band into the encore, bursting onstage playing back what the crowd shouted at them.

By the end of the night, Reel Big Fish had done their fair share of covers and an encore, and left the crowd wanting more.

If only all Friday the 13th weekends could be like this one!

Elm Street in Dallas is doing the weekend up in style with the Music & Tattoo Festival and bringing out a wide array of bands with it. We're gearing up to head over to Club Dada to check out Ishi, Painted Palms, Blackstone Rangers and Def Rain Thursday night.

A refreshing group of psych-pop loving cousins, Painted Palms kicked off their summer tour June 6 and is making Texas one of the first stops. The group's most recently released album, Forever, is a perfect blend of bright pop hooks and simple harmonies over looping electro-acoustic beats that'll transport you back to the 60s.

The band's pretty much been on tour non-stop since the beginning of the year and has been releasing wonderful treats in the meantime - the music video for their title track features light painting, kaleidoscopes and several moments where you'll think 'what the heck did I just watch?' but press forward with morbid curiosity.

Pitchfork calls them Beach Boys-meets-Panda Bear and it's that wonderful oxymoron that is surely at work behind their touring success. Think Dada will let us bring our beach towels?

Either way, make sure you set Club Dada high on your radar for Thursday at 8 p.m. to see these guys in action. We'll definitely be there.

Last Sunday we sat down with brothers Django Stewart & Samuel Stewart of Nightmare and the Cat just before their debut Dallas performance at the House of Blues.

From recently playing Letterman to their latest single "Undercover" and touring with Neon Trees on the Pop Psychology Tour we covered a lot with this duo originally from London!

Looks like this is your first time to play Dallas?

Samuel:
I've been here before but not with Nightmare and the Cat.

GBS:
So Neon Trees, Pop Psychology Tour that must not suck to be apart of right now?

Samuel:
Yeah it's been awesome!

Django:
Yeah it's amazing! The stage production is really mind blowing kind of a dream to work toward I think.

Samuel:
The crew has been super helpful and nice. They have gone above and beyond what they need to, to help us out.

GBS:
Have you guys been on the tour since it started in Nashville back on the 12th of May?

Django:
It was three weeks ago yesterday.

GBS:
Congrats on getting to play Letterman a little over two weeks ago! Any big surprises you weren't expecting from Dave or the show?

Django:
The actual show itself was a big surprise because we had been driving and trying to stay awake in our van for four days near the beginning of the tour. We had no idea that we would be playing
Letterman and we had a day off planned like the day of Letterman. We were really excited to get a full nights sleep. We weren't expecting it and I remember just coming out of the shower and
Sam's face looked like he had just seen a ghost and he goes "we are driving overnight to Letterman from Pittsburgh.

Samuel:
Yeah get this we woke up after 5am that morning in Chicago. Drove to Pittsburgh did sound check found out we were going to play Letterman. So Chicago to Pittsburgh, played a show then
drove up to New York did Letterman all in 24 hours.

Django:
We sound checked at like 4 in the morning at Letterman. It was amazing! One of those stories you'll have always.

GBS:
Undercover seems to be doing really well for you guys right now. I really dig the song, not just interview talk! I've got to ask, what the heck is Samuel using to bang on his guitar strings with during the Letterman performance?

Samuel:
Seems like it's getting there ya know. A slow climb on the radio. At least stations are starting to pick it up which is really great for us!

Django:
Thanks so much! It's kinda hard to tell when you're in the touring bubble.

Samuel:
Just a pen. I just went into Walgreens or something and bought a pack of like 40 pens for $3. I'm almost out think I've got one left. It's just what works the best. When I originally wrote the part I
think I was using a fork or something but that gave it too much of a metallic sound. Bic! I need to get a Bic endorsement.

GBS:
Django let's talk about your mistake in gender by a couple of ladies you mentioned on twitter and I quote... "Since my Letterman performance two lesbians have confused me for a 'hot lesbian
girl'. @mention BoyGeorge - #delicateboy". What gives on that bro?

Django:
Why do you think that was me? That wasn't me, nah I'm just kidding. I'm not very good at twitter but I was happy with that one. I did do that. I post in instagram alot. I feel like a lot of people boast on twitter.

GBS:
That's what it's for..!

Django:
But for that I was definitely down to post about!

Samuel:
It was funny I went into... the day after our Letterman I went into a coffee shop with a friend he was like to the barista that he's friendly with "this guy was on Letterman last night" just trying to embarrass me. She was like "oh yeah what do you play?" Guitar. "oh do you have a girl in your band? And you've got a really hot lesbian singer!" No, you might be thinking of a different band.
She then describe Clair [background vocals, guitar, drums] and then she said "and your singers a chick too right?" I said actually no that's my brother.

Django:
But I'm a really big fan of front men that are androgynous!

Samuel:
He was flattered!

GBS:
You guys played the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville not long ago. Pretty epic bucket list of a venue for just about any artist to play. The room and the acoustics were amazing right?

Samuel:
That for me was a little tricky because and probably for everyone because that was the first time ever playing with in-ears and I just kinda freaked out. Just tore mine out so I unfortunately didn't notice how amazing the acoustics were.

Django:
It's just amazing! So cool to play and for the first show it was historical!

GBS:
Last question! Considering we are at the House of Blues tonight... what's your favorite blues song of all time from any era?

Samuel:
My favorite blues song Hard Time Killing Floor Blues. I have to admit the first time I heard it was in the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou. King that is playing it as the character loosely based on
Robert Johnson. Since then I've heard the Skip James version and I'm not sure who does it originally I think it might be Skip James but I just love it.

Django:
I'm scared that I'm going to get confused and name a soul song but I'd Rather Go Blind by Etta James or Born By the River by Sam Cooke.

Samuel:
That song is called A Change Is Gonna Come.

Django:

Neon Trees bring Pop Psychology to House of Blues Dallas

This past Sunday we spent the evening at the House of Blues in Dallas with some serious pop artists known to stay in heavy rotation with most top 40 stations and one band that will no doubt be doing the same soon!

Nightmare and the Cat opened up the night with a very respectable crowd that had already filled in past the main music room's side bar closest to the stage. Having just wrapped up our interview with brothers, Django and Samuel Stewart, it was cool to watch them do their thing live for the first time in our experience. >>Read the full interview here<<

Although not a long set Django and the band no doubt kept the crowd into the moment with their clever melodies and great on stage energy by the front man.

Next up brought a band we had just caught live a few weeks prior at Suburbia Music Festival, Smallpools. Maybe it's my imagination but it seems like these guys play the Dallas area more than some local bands!

I know for a fact this made the third or fourth time our photographer Eric Boff aka: Oh Jee Nam had shot them in less than two months in DFW. Great shots at that! Much respect Rhombi Survivor Photo Safaris!

Despite the frequent visits Smallpools didn't seem to mind and brought some of the best crowd interaction and without question highest quality cover song of the night which the title now slips my mind and I'll update later.

We also had music lifestyle blog Sound Conviction with us to take in the night. Big thanks to Dale for hanging out with us and catching the show!

Headliners Neon Trees took the stage after a few extra minutes of stage prep. and right away killed it with the amount of color and sonic overload! Great stage design for this tour, top notch sound and very talented musicians and singers all around.

I almost shot myself in the foot by calling out one of the members of the band, drummer Elaine Bradley, on twitter by accident.

Innocently enough I grabbed a quick mobile phone picture of the band live and decided to post it on the GoodBAMM instagram account. I also told instagram to post to twitter. No secret that instagram and twitter don't always get along so well and I noticed my @official_neontrees (the bands instagram acct.) had been turned into @elanietrees over on my twitter post. So I didn't bother to see who the @elanietrees acct. belongs to on twitter and instead posted "Who the hell is @elainetrees #instagram? @neontrees" to which you can see Mrs. Bradley's reply below...

Yea, I'm cool like that! At least she was able to smile and wink about it.

Wrapping up the night we caught the hits and no doubt felt the love of what must have been a sold out crowd that had us pushing back toward the back bar before leaving.

Pop fan or not it was a great live show in Dallas for a Sunday night and I would happily catch them live again!

TEAM* the #FWMF Interview

Fans of Forever the Sickest Kids are no doubt familiar with Caleb Turman and Rico Garcia who are now dedicating all their time to the band they call TEAM*.

I sat down with the guys not long after their live set at Fort Worth Music Festival to talk about their new EP, their producer Will Pugh, touring with Third Eye Blind and one limited edition Darth Vader doll that had been doll-napped by an unlikely individual of a certain well known band!

The interview you are about to read is rather lengthy with a lot of banter but worth it! Trust us!

Welcome to Fort Worth guys! Kind of a joke but still welcome!

GBS:
Good Morning Bad Day just released last week. Congrats on the new EP! Very solid release and I'm pretty sure my favorite track is "All The Time".Considering you guys worked with Will Pugh (Pew) on this EP and the TEAM* EP do they both feel like connected releases or completely separate?

Caleb:
I think they're separate and we've grown alot as a team. Since we started recording the first EP we've been progressing the entire time. At the end of this record we felt we had come so far and we feel like this is a big move and we're all very proud of it.

Rico:
Let me reiterate on that and say that whatever we did on the first EP with Will it was literally a week after our first show. Will just saw us and said we should record. He had an idea but I think you can tell with the second record he grew with us and knew exactly what Caleb was writing and where he was going and knew exactly, like a puzzle piece to fill in those gaps. It was great to see the progression!

The other one was done so quickly which we are very proud of it but since there was a good gap that Will was very involved and played with us as a team and really nailed these vocals and melodies.

Caleb:
No pun intended... lol

Rico:
It was cool that Will was acting almost as a silent member.

GBS:
That is cool for a producer because you get some guys that have been around for awhile that like to try and direct vs produce.

Rico:
Right. He's been on both sides of the table.

Caleb:
He is a team member. We respect each other so much!

GBS:
Kings of A&R called you guys one of their favorites and you're playing select dates with both Third Eye Blind and of course Jimmy Eat World who are here tonight. Have you had a chance to hang out with any of the guys from either band?

Rico:
We did the full tour with Third Eye Blind in the fall and they asked us to come back. We actually have a really good relationship with Third Eye Blind. They gave us a chance to go out on a legitimate tour and we're grateful for that. We definitely have a good relationship with them! As for Jimmy Eat World I'd love to hang out and have a beer with Jim Adkins so if you're interviewing him later if you could tell him that?

GBS:
I'm not but I'll throw that out there and see if he bites! lol

Caleb:
I've been contemplating walking on his bus all day long.

Rico:
If we act like we're suppose to be there maybe they won't question it?

GBS:
It's the same as anything else. As the bus door opens just go right behind him!

Rico:
Go straight to the bunks and lay down! If he gets out from his bunk. He's been sleeping all day!

GBS:
How's touring with Third Eye been so far? Do they treat you like an "opening act"?

Rico:
Not at all they treat us like family. They've been really supportive! Some of the first people to buy our first record were guys from Third Eye Blind! We're like what the heck? Alex LeCavalier just
bought the record. They've been really cool and supportive and whenever they knew they were doing a couple of one off's they called us and said hey are you guys free? I was like why? Do you want to do some shows? We were like YES! They took us in.

Caleb:
And I have to say I've been touring for a long time and I feel closer to Third Eye Blind than I probably ever felt to any other band. It's really insane!

GBS:
That's cool for a band that's been around that long and that big to have that type of relationship with them.

Rico:
Actually Stephan and Caleb when this is all done they are suppose to split an apartment together in San Francisco! They want to have a farm and Stephan wants to be by the beach! lol

GBS:
Did you guys catch them at Suburbia? Aside from being awesome and the front man of the band he does a great Mick Jagger!

Rico:
Dude he's in amazing shape!

Caleb:
His pecks!

Do you have a personal relationship with his pecks?

Caleb:
You could say that!

Rico:
If his pecks would call him back!

Caleb:
We've shaken hands a couple of times!

GBS:
You're both doing a lot of time splitting between TEAM, Forever the Sickest and running Field Day Records. What's the balance like trying to make it all happen in a cohesive manner?

Caleb:
No, we're full time TEAM*. Rico and I knew whenever we made the transition. We were pretty quiet about it. There was a short period of time where we were doing some one offs but writing and recording with our new band. It's all TEAM* now, we've decided this is what we wanted to do and this is the direction.

Rico:
Everything happen really unforced too. It was a very organic transition. FOREVER kinda started doing a little less and we started doing a little more. It was never any hard feelings or anything that's just kinda what happen.

GBS:
Sure, it's just change that's all!

GBS:
As far as your label, Field Day Records, you guys are killing it as artists but is there more coming? Are you looking to aggressively go after more bands?

Rico:
I plead the 5th.

Caleb:
We have some things coming up. Rico has been on his computer 24/7 looking at new artists. I think we have some people we're interested in but that's something we'll talk about later!

Rico:
And off the record half the time I'm looking at porn!

Caleb:
Half the time I'm watching him look at porn!

GBS:
That's a visual! At least you have a backup plan in case the label doesn't quite expand as quick as you might have hoped. You could try porn!

Caleb:
He's in no big rush I promise you. We're alright!

GBS:
You recorded part of or most of the new EP in Nashville right? Was that your first time tracking there?

Caleb:
All of it!

Rico:
We did drums and stuff in Dallas. Well started in Dallas but then got to Nashville and this guy [Caleb] went to work.

Caleb:
There was a lot of pre production involved. Will started coming over to our house putting a mic in the middle of the room and create songs together. Do all that bullshit before we ever set foot in
the studio. So when it was go time it was go time!

Rico:
We were probably in Nashville for less than two weeks. It was like 10 days, we did the whole record in 10 days.

Caleb:
His drums took literally a half a day. He knew what the fuck he was doing and has a real natural sense of time.

Rico:
They didn't give us much time. So what I did is I hit it and they like put it together in post I didn't even show up.

GBS:
You mailed it in!

Caleb:
He emailed his drums!

GBS:
You guys should have went to London. They would have gave you three weeks on drum sounds!

Caleb:
No way!

GBS:
Yeah, all those British guys they take like three weeks on drums.

Rico:
Can you just imagine that process?

GBS:
For Phil Collins, yeah! But for just any drummer, no.

Caleb:
Can I just say I'm not too impressed!

Rico:
You don't like that? Phil Collins snare drum!? What was really fun about the whole record is it was very uh.... Caleb has done a lot of records and I have done a lot of records that weren't legit let's be honest. We hadn't done anything I'm too proud of! The way we recorded it, it reminded me of stuff when I was 14 it was like very do it yourself and low budget but very real and I was very happy with how it came out. There were a couple of guys in a 10 x 10 room that gave a shit!

Caleb:
That's just it, we gave a shit! The whole way through we were like this may not be perfect but we give a fuck so let's keep trying until we got it.

Rico:
There was no fancy studio. It was in Will's town home in his little 8 x 8 studio.

GBS:
So you guys were literally doing the bedroom sessions?

Rico:
We recorded this record with less than I did in high school! It was very very grassroots.

GBS:
That makes the EP that more impressive. I know the technology is there but the talent has to be too so that's awesome.

Rico:
Smoke and mirrors on my end it was all this guy!

Caleb:
A lot of smoke, not too many mirrors!

GBS:
Best argument you have ever had with one another that resulted in something positive?

Rico:
I'm sorry, what? We live together and that's been a fun thing! You know we've toured for a long time together and you're always like in fun mode. When you get home it's a little different!

Caleb:
A couple of weeks ago we were like hey man, you know what? You brush your teeth too loud! It's kinda funny actually but that's the worst argument.

Rico:
I'm learning so much about myself when he points out things. I realize oh my god I do that! That is annoying! And I don't even realize it so I almost feel like I'm in a marriage where I'm learning and he points it out and I'm like shit I need to work on that.

Caleb:
Also I just got back from Portland, my girlfriends parents live up there, her brother will be doing drum beats and she's like John shut the fuck up! Then he's like oh I'm so sorry. They know each other. When you get close to somebody you have to actually come to that point to this is what's happening. I'm confident in our future because we are at the point where it's no more bullshit let's
talk about it. I'm ready to do 10 more records.

Rico:
Over 80 years!

Caleb:
We'll be 97 touring.

Rico:
We'll be the Rolling Stones! There will be a hologram of us and us! We've been talking about it but we don't have the cash.

GBS:
Give it 20 years and holographic stuff will be really cheap.

Rico:
I know they're trying to figure out who to do it next with and I'm voting for Freddie Mercury honestly!

GBS:
I'm amazed that they haven't tried Elvis yet. It would bomb horribly but...

Caleb:
What version of Elvis would it be?

GBS:
Would you waste the money to do the fat Elvis? I don't think so! lol

Caleb:
Maybe he just ages 50 years...

GBS:
Or maybe he's still alive and he just shows up?

Caleb:
My mind just exploded!

GBS:
Coolest thing a fan has ever said, did or given you?

Rico:
He gets a lot of stuff so this is a question for him.

Caleb:
I'm a huge Star Wars fan and a lot of my fans bring me Darth Vader dolls and light sabers and what not. I think the coolest thing would be that. The weirdest thing would be locks of hair and like things like that.

Rico:
A stack this thick of love letters they wrote everyday for a year.

GBS:
They waited to give them to you?

Caleb:
I don't want to put this person on blast just because I know she's going to read this but I've gotten some interesting things.

Rico:
And for the record as for Star Wars somebody in Oklahoma brought him a limited edition Darth Vader and Kryz from Third Eye Blind stole it so you DICK! GIVE IT BACK!

Caleb:
Dude where is that!?

Rico:
Dude they've been posting pictures like on the bus with the band!

Caleb:
How come you didn't tell me that shit!?

Rico:
I thought you saw it!

Caleb:
NOOOO!

GBS:
He didn't even know it was missing!

Rico:
They did this whole pic-stitch of Third Eye Blind because you know their bus is black!

Caleb:
That's messed up!

GBS:
It's on the bus, you know that right?

Rico:
Third Eye Blind is touring with a black bus and it's their mascot. HIS Darth Vader Doll, give it back.

Caleb:
GIVE IT BACK!

GBS:
He's riding on the dash up front with the driver!

Rico:
He's probably in Stephen's bunk!

GBS:
There's going to be some social media talk about this and Third Eye Blind stealing figurines!

Caleb:
I hope so!

Rico:
They've got sticky fingers!

Caleb:
So sticky!

Rico:
Not only is it on their bus but they went to the merch table and just took it!

Caleb:
The last time I saw that Darth Vader it was kinda tucked away. So I'm assuming someone from my crew...

GBS:
No, you know your guys wouldn't do that to ya. But your other guys will!

Caleb:
It's actually one guy! Prankster! It's Kryz but I'll take it out on Stephen.

GBS:
Rico! Favorite drum break on any song ever?

Rico:
Oh geez, you [Caleb] just gave me like a Risky Business [lowered sunglasses]

Caleb:
I can't speak for you. Drum break? What is that like a fill? I'm not a drummer this is off Revolver. Ah yah yah, relax your mind.... [Caleb beatboxes a drum fill].

Rico:
That's not really a drum break.

GBS:
Cool, that's more of a cadence but I feel ya. It's a great part!

Rico:
We've got a drummer on board!

Caleb:
Gosh, you just denounced my statement!

Rico:
Ok you know one of my favorite drum breaks that I've been hearing alot is actually not recorded but it's a thing that's live. Does that count?

GBS:
That's fine!

Rico:
On Never Let You Go by Third Eye Blind right before the bridge it goes [Rico beatboxing] dude Brad just goes off!

GBS:
Yeah I actually saw him at Suburbia!

Rico:
He does like four bars and just seeing that every night I'm like [hand moving off head mind blown]. Dude doesn't play to a click, he's a human metronome! The last run we did he was giving me lessons he's incredible. I love watching him. For awhile that's been my favorite but seeing him every night because he never plays it the same! He's actually a drummer!

GBS:
Caleb! Favorite guitar riff or solo on any song ever?

Caleb:
Corrina from Bob Dylan there's a little guitar riff if you've never heard of it look it up! It's not nearly as cool as your response but it means something to me!

Rico:
His is better because it's actually recorded and you can't look mine up!

GBS:
Either one of you finish this sentence with the first thing that comes to mind ......... you're so 80's if.............?

Caleb:
If you don't shave your pubes!

Rico:
I'm sorry your so 80's if....

Caleb:
Yeah, you wish you had MINE!

Rico:
Whatever I say is going to be just terrible! You are so 80's if you think... VHS really is better than DVD! Because I literally had a guy that was like VHS is so much better! No, it actually isn't!

Caleb:
It isn't vinyl!

GBS:
Insane technology that was horrible! Awesome, thank you both!

Trinity Backstroke Review of Fort Worth Music Festival

Sweet country evenings and electro pop/rock nights is one way to describe the two day music festival's return to Panther Island Pavilion.

Two Friday evenings ago Fort Worth had a very charming look to itself peering down on the banks of the Trinity River as if the skyline had it's own front row seat to this dual stage event.

We arrived just in time to catch arguably the city's favorite Southern Rock/Americana locals - Quaker City Nighthawks over on the Shiner Bock Stage.

One thing that we noticed immediately different walking in this year was stage locations. The smaller hilltop stage from last year had been replaced by a second mainstage size Shiner Bock stage that faced off at least a 100 yards from the equally large Rahr Brewing stage to the NW.

Other than a little bit of soundcheck bleed from one stage to another the dual facing layout didn't seem to cause any negative "feedback" either day.

After cooling down with an ice cold mega snow cone from vendor row it was time to catch the "Snake Farm" country blues from a serious Texas favorite Mr. Ray Wiley Hubbard.

Donning his tex/mex inspired sunshade/hat Mr. Hubbard was the first to noticeably begin to fill the front stage area in over at the Rahr Brewing stage.

Although we missed most of Justin Townes Earle's live set back over on the Shiner Bock stage, due to the need to feed, it was near impossible to miss hearing really bad tuning on the part of his steel guitar and lead guitar players. Everyone has a bad night from time to time but there is no excuse for being out of tune for an entire live set!

Haw, haw, haw we managed to catch up with Mr. Billy F. Gibbons of ZZ Top right before he took the Rahr Brewing stage.

Backed by a multi Grammy winning band of legendary studio/live musicians, Billy fretted out some rockin' Texas swing match with blues standards that had the crowd begging for more! It only took about a half a bar of the opening riff to "Sharp Dressed Man" to make the crowd loose their effin' minds for the first time Friday night. So Billy put the crowd to work for him and made all the chorus hook lines their job to sing. Trust me when I say it's a surreal experience to watch a 19-20 year old know and sing the lyrics to a ZZ Top song right next to the people who grew up with their music!

Mr. Gibbons final song started out with legendary drummer, Kenny Aronoff, clicking his sticks together in a very familiar pattern. Billy says over the mic to the crowd, "you hear that? Do you know what that is? He [Kenny] knows what that is!" Then comes one of the most recognizable guitar licks of the 20th century as Billy starts to speak the open lines to La Grange with some added and over embellished "haw, haw, haw's" thrown in for fun. Drum fill please, nailed it! Rancho Texicano in da house Fort Worth!

Friday night's headliner was the legendary Lucinda Williams who the crowd equally adored! Sad to say we missed most of her show but we did manage to catch a couple great photos that night before leaving!

DAY TWO:
Time to switch the format way the hell up for Saturday! Dallas locals, The Fox and the Bird, brought some modern folk to Rahr stage early that day who we caught snaps with not long after their live set.

Oil Boom laid it down solid like they always do in DFW. Something tells me that bright orange Gibson Tennessean with the massive f-holes or sound holes is becoming a signature look for the band. I vote that lead singer Ryan Taylor should make a facebook page for her [the guitar]!

TEAM* caught us off guard a little bit even though we had just listened to their EP, "Good Morning Bad Day", all the way through for the first time before heading to the fest on Saturday.

Stage presence and the super relaxed chat with the audience was the biggest surprise from lead singer Caleb Turman. Fun to watch and great live sound is the best first impression I have for this band called TEAM* - asterisk included!

Even the paparazzi got in on the action during TEAM*'s live set. Make no mistake about it people these guys come in all shapes and sizes so watch out! Seriously, is this little guy not just awesome or what? All photographers or anyone with a soft spot have to love this kid!

So back over to the media tent area behind Rahr stage. We ran into Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. and had a few beers while we waited on our scheduled time to interview TEAM*. Super nice dudes and very laid back for sure!

Back to the Shiner, Air Review worked up some synth heavy harmonies and serious groove flow based jams for the crowd. Oddly enough all their laptops had black electrical tape covering the Apple logos on Saturday. Not going to speculate other than "no free ad space" for Air Review?

Aaron Behrens and the Midnight Stroll gave us a first live look at the Ghostland Observatory front man's solo project.

Another cool surprise on our second day at #FWMF was catching The Airborne Toxic Event live for the first time. Not only a great live sound but extremely talented, multi-instrumental, guys and gal!

Not summer just yet but hot enough that if you had one too many Shiners you might just find yourself out for the count next to the largest Shiner bottle on festival grounds. Shine easy folks!

One last trip back over to the Rahr stage for it's final show of the festival. Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. were refreshed and amped to pump some electro/telephone goodness into the Fort Worth atmosphere!

Cue Mr. Schectman from 102.1 The Edge to called out the all day awaited headliners:

Lead man, Jim Adkins, brought the guys out in full force with pop/rock infused amplification that brought easily the largest crowd of the entire festival to the Shiner stage. The boys from AZ worked their way through new songs and old hits ramping up to the one song that had been quoted, hummed and sang aloud all weekend leading up to their appearance.

And with that, EVERYTHING EVERYTHING - was alright!

Safe to say most bands from "suburban" cities like Plano never get a chance to play a big music festival in their hometown.

Exactly one half of alt. rock band VERIDIA got to do just that a little over three weeks ago. We sat down with the band at Suburbia Music Festival to talk about Plano, Nashville their record label and Sir Mix-A-Lot!

GBS:
It has to be cool playing a festival this big almost literally in your backyard?

VERIDIA:
We feel so honored!
Just to be apart of this and be able to witness something of this caliber while being in Plano. I think it's a great idea which has never happen!

GBS:
Deena you went to Canyon Creek Christian right? And Brandon you were at Plano East?

VERIDIA:
Yes, Yes!

GBS:
Now the band actually formed in Nashville last year right? That's awesome considering Nashville is my hometown yet I'm talking to you guys in your hometown that I happen to live near nowadays.

VERIDIA:
Yes, we did!

GBS:
So how did you all end up in Nashville and meet?

VERIDIA:
[Deena] Me and Brandon played together for several years and just decided we wanted to take an adventure and see what Nashville had to offer. It was an awesome place to just connect with a bunch of musicians and writers. It's a great place to write and start fresh and that's where it kinda all happen. We ended up meeting these guys through mutual friends, got together and we've been together for a year and a half now.

[Trevor] I came to Nashville in 2008 and went to college at Belmont. I graduated there in 2012 and we started playing together right then.

GBS:
Have you had a chance to explore Nashville much yet? Any favorite local bands you've latched on to?

VERIDIA:
We haven't had a chance to go to a lot of clubs. We went and saw the Time Jumpers! Lots of old school kinda Americana Bluegrass band. We also saw a band called Modoc. I actually worked with the guitar player at Guitar Center in Fort Wayne Indiana. I've had a chance to see Hannah Blaylock who is a country artist and Emily West who has the biggest voice next to Barbra Streisand oh my gosh so intense! [her voice] Still has a modern vibe to it.

GBS:
How soon after did the band sign with Word?

VERIDIA:
We had written nearly 40 or 50 songs before we actually signed to Word.

GBS:
You guys have Gulfport Music Festival coming up next week. The lineup is pretty awesome you guys included. Do you plan to try and catch any of the other acts live?

VERIDIA:
Sir Mixalot! I wanna see Kid Rock for sure who should put on a great show!

Quick Peek at Fort Worth Music Festival this Weekend!

Retro cool is no doubt the theme for this years Fort Worth Music Festival at Panther Island Pavilion.

Every piece of artwork or graphic related to the festival we've seen so far has that aged 70's vibe going on that could easily pass for a vintage t-shirt print or bumper sticker from that era.

The new/old vibe is very fitting considering the lineup this year! True music legends like Lucinda Williams headlining Friday night's (5/16) Shiner Bock Stage & Billy F Gibbons of ZZ Top no doubt will bring a massive crowd to the Rahr Brewing Stage beforehand.

Justin Townes Earle will also be on hand Friday night as well to give Fort Worth another dose of his adored folk heritage that people couldn't seem to get enough of at Paste Untapped Fort Worth last year.

Popular Austin band Uncle Lucius take the Rahr stage around 5pm plus some great local support from bands like Quaker City Nighthawks, Patriot and Ronnie Fauss will be live on Friday.

Suburbia, day two - it was muy caliente, muy dusty, and muy musical, starting right off with our first set checking out The Unlikely Candidates.

We'rewolves with the good ol' fashion rock with a modern, soulful twist. Plus, I truly appreciate anyone who can run energetically around stage in an all-black ensemble in Texas heat - these guys definitely got the crowd going to start out the day.

We caught up with Larry g(EE) after quite a walk and saw that he and his full band were up to their lively selves as usual. Larry g(EE) sets are never short of fun and classic, soulful jams appreciated by all generations, and what truly made this set great was hearing the reactions of crowd goers around me who hadn't heard his stuff before, many making notes in their phones to check out more of his work after the evening was over.

Over at the main stage later in the day, Smallpools entertained us all with the spirited, happy tunes we have come to know and love and some fantastic covers of 90s songs, to boot. The talent we hear from these guys over the radio waves directly translates to their talent on stage - you're only going to get better quality each time.

Rapper Sol delighted audiences with some honest rhymes about topics like love, work and weed - instant attention-grabbers. And we could feel, er, smell, the love going on at the set and hear it from the screams of young girls melting for his smooth charms.

Radio breakouts Blue October drew in a huge crowd trying to get the best spot possible to witness their truly quirky set. The band had an interesting way of connecting with the audience by zoning out and into what could have been a transcendental environment only accessed by giving in to their catchy, honest tunes.

J Cole brought probably the most entertaining set of the day and certainly the most straightforwardness ("I'm just gonna be real with y'all, I had some Hennessy earlier.") But it was totally fine because it brought us even more happiness to witness his spitfire lyrics on top of a fully orchestrated rock and synth band behind him. A few tumbles around stage and great choreography from his backup dancers only increased the likeability.

Twin sister duo Tegan and Sara reminded us of their impressive vocal and instrumental talents that have lasted through many years. It's hard to find a more relatable and likeable group of people around, easily witnessed by the reaction they got any time one of them spoke a word. Tracks dealing with universal issues like problems with relationships, or lack thereof, were a definitive way to immediately connect to the heart, and the girls stayed in those hearts each time a key was pressed or a lyric belted.

Wrapping up the night was Mr. David Guetta bringing his high energy French brand of EDM to the mainstage as the final nights headliner. Although we did not catch all of his live performance we did manage to grab a couple of solid shots including a true blast of purple EDM greatness!

Complex Magazine named Meg Myers as one of “10 Sexy IndieArtists You Should Know” in 2012. Born in Nashville and having made her way around the country at an early age Meg landed in Los Angeles just shy of her 20^th birthday.

Her debut EP “Daughter In The Choir” caught critical success comparing Meg to artists like Alanis Morissette, Fiona Apple and Sinead O’Connor.

"Make A Shadow" is Meg's most recent EP with current single "Desire" being called 'the answer song to Nine Inch Nail's - Closer' by MTV Buzzworthy.

Is this your first time to play in the Dallas area?

Myers:

Yeah. I was in for South By but yeah.

GBS:

I was surprised to learn that you and I have more than your average amount of things in common. I was born in Nashville and my dad is from East Tennessee/Smokey Mountain area. What's your best memory as a child from living in that area?

Myers:

Cool. So did my dad! He's actually there right now.

GBS:

Sevierville, do you remember that area?

Myers:

Yeah my brother Travis lives there. I feel like I have alot of memories from when I was really little. I feel like all the times I would visit because I lived in Ohio with my mom most of the time but it was just paradise to me. It still is every time I go, this is what I love and this is where I want to be. I just love it.

GBS:

So a lot of people are making the comparison to artists like Fiona Apple, Alanis, Sinead O'Connor. You however list Tracy Chapman, Joan Osborne and Ann Wilson from Heart as your musical inspirations. Trent Reznor I know is also a big one for you. Put all those acts into a proverbial blender do you think that would equal the sound and style your developing for yourself as an artist or are you not trying to be that scientific with it?

Myers:

Yeah I would say that I'm not. I just want to write what I feel and get inspired by different things. Generally it's older stuff like classic rock that I grew up listening to and that was always my go to and a lot of classical music. I feel like when I write it never has been [planned] I just want to express myself and I'm inspired by things but I want to have this thing that is my own and in order to do that I have to go within and pull from that. Whatever comes out, that's it. Working with my producer Andy has been really cool because we both come from totally different musical backgrounds and working together has made what I have. I have this very 90's thing going and he comes from the producer world with a more modern sound. It's cool that we have blended the two.

GBS:

It seems like the chemistry between yourself and your producer Andy Rosen is great! Was it instant or did you have to woodshed it until it started clicking?

Myers:

It was instant! We've known each other for three years so it took a little while to really find what we have now.

GBS:

So did "Guitarist Mike" manage to drive all 12 hours as declared a few days ago? Did anyone make any serious cash off the bets around it?

Myers:

He did! lol He hasn't really wanted to drive now since. Somebody bet on twitter but what are you going to do? Send it over! lol -read the actual bet from Meg’s twitter page

GBS:

How has touring with the Broods been for you?

Myers:

It's been awesome! We're going back to Boston tomorrow and then we're doing a Canada tour with them and then a west coast tour. So far it's been so fun!

GBS:

Have they kinda taken you under their wing and treating you like a sister?

Myers:

Yeah!

GBS:

You've got Lollapalooza coming up in August. Crazy good lineup, yourself included! Any particular artist you are stoked to see live?

Myers:

I haven't thought about it. I never really know how much time I'll have at any specific place.

Suburbia Music Festival – Day 1 First Look

The drive from Arlington to Plano isn’t that bad I kept telling myself on Saturday morning while getting ready to head out for the day. Basically once you have conquered I-30 East and make the transition to 75 North you should have it beat right? Turns out you have another 20 miles to go before the Spring Creek exit. No worries, it’s all apart of the adventure!

Adventure indeed! Driving down Spring Creek Pkwy I couldn’t help but notice the old fashion multi-colored pennant string flags lining both sides of the road as I roll closer to Oak Point Park. Seconds later I ended up behind a convoy of school buses. My first thought was there must be some type of school sports thing happening but then I suddenly remembered Suburbia was offering “shuttle” service from lots A & B. Jackpot! I get to ride a Yellow Bus to Suburbia Fest!

Walking in you couldn’t help but notice it was a bit of a hike. The park is beautiful with an on site pond and amphitheater not to mention rolling hills with an intertwining walk/bike path all throughout! As I kept walking I realized this was no small festival in layout! Main Entrance you are greeted by standard but good security with a bag check and pretty standard do’s and don’ts while on festival grounds.

After making my way past a few of the exhibitor tents and checking out some of the freebies I caught a first glimpse of the Meadow (Main) Stage just before the first live band, The Rocketboys, were to inaugurate the hell out of it!

What seemed like many miles over hills and valleys, YungNation had already began to bring their Hip Hop flavor to the Cedar Room Stage which would end up being a mixed stage of hip hop, R&B and EDM.

Not far from Cedar you could find the Prairie Stage with local alt country, Americana duo The O’s gearing up for the first Prairie set of the festival. Like the other stages it would end up with a mixed group of acts for the weekend.

The second set at Meadow Stage for the day would be Austin, TX hard rockers UME! Pronounced "Oooo-May" are by no means your typical hard rock band as you will find out in our upcoming interview! Fronted by a blond haired guitar slinging rock star in her own right, Lauren Larson will immediately convince you she and the band are no gimmick. She is a seriously talented musician and singer with a raw energy lacking from many bands today.

Meg Myers would be the third live act to perform on the Prairie Stage Saturday which we had been anticipating! A sultry mix 90’s rock and modern sounds filled the space around Prairie with Meg’s edgy and sometimes explicit lyrics of angst. The guys in the crowd seem to instantly gravitate toward Meg’s stage presence which also attracted the women with her strong posturing bass guitar stance and vocal delivery.

Back on the main stage NEEDTOBREATHE brought the first BIG dose of dirty delta folk rock to Plano. Not to mention this was the first time I noticed the crowd starting to get huge out front well past the two story VIP balcony area. Girl Name Tennessee was only one of the great Americana Alt Rock songs the boys of North Carolina laid down for the Suburban crowd this day. A limited but great live set by the guys all around.

Why Third Eye Blind wasn’t the headliner on Saturday night was a question asked in the media area more than once. Front man, Stephen Jenkins, no doubt had “moves like Jagger” Saturday that made the crowd insane along with the extremely memorable 90’s hits they played which are so damn hard to not sing along with and have stuck in your head for the rest of the weekend.

Livetronica anyone? Why yes, we will. Big Gigantic brought a seriously bright and trippy live show to the Cedar Room as the sun began to fade. Massive screens surround the duo as they pumped out the hip hop/jazz influenced beats mixed with high quality electronic sounds. This live set no doubt gave the crowd a preview of what Mr. Guetta would bring on Sunday night!

Day 1’s headliner the Alabama Shakes kicked off right on time back down at the main stage. Lead singer Brittany Howard gave a full throttle vocal performance for the Plano crowd complete with tasty guitar riffs and a solid rhythm and lead band. Hold On, Always Alright and You Ain’t Alone were all apart of the 50+ minute set that wrapped the first night up in soulful style.

First day complete without any major issues other than the heat and a personal sunburn that felt much more 3^rd degree than reality. Thumbs up on a successful first day for the inaugural music festival!
