This Earth Day we had a good reason to celebrate the high bar the auto industry has set for meeting today’s urgent climate challenges. The fuel efficient cars and trucks rolling off the assembly line today and in the future are proof of how working together, we can meet the nation’s economic and environmental challenges. What else can we aspire to accomplish when we address these two challenges together?

We’re better off today because workers, companies, environmental groups and the government came together around effective, forward-looking fuel economy standards and reinvestment in American manufacturing. We have the leadership of the UAW and the industry to thank for the most fuel efficient vehicles ever. Whether it’s state-of-the-art internal combustion engines and transmissions or next generation technologies like electric vehicles, the industry is proving today’s cars and trucks can successfully prevent carbon emissions while bringing jobs back to the auto sector and boosting economic growth.

The new generations of vehicles are delivering big results. Doubling fuel economy by 2025 is the biggest single step ever taken in the U.S. to cut greenhouse gas emissions and one of the largest worldwide—reducing annual emissions equal to about 10 percent of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions today when fully implemented.

In addition to taking a major step forward to address climate change, the 2012-2025 light-duty vehicle standards in combination with existing standards for medium and heavy duty trucks will save the U.S. three million barrels a of oil a day in 2025. That’s more than a quarter of transportation fuel and more than the U.S. imported from all OPEC countries 2014. The fuel savings from these new, efficient vehicles will also save consumers over $1.7 trillion at the pump.

Building the next generation of vehicles in America means investment, innovation and jobs in a new generation of manufacturing facilities. Autoworkers building new fuel efficient pickup truck engines and transmissions, electric motors for the Spark EV and over one million fuel efficient Chevy Cruze vehicles aren’t just building cutting edge technology, they’re doing it in facilities that are pushing the envelope on clean energy generation and waste reduction. It also means investment and jobs in the hundreds of companies across the country that build components for these vehicles.

So where does the momentum created by the auto industry take us? It helps give us a model that can keep on delivering in the auto industry, in manufacturing, and in other industries altogether.

The domestic auto industry is more competitive than ever, sales are up and consumers are saving money at the pump. As a result, the cars and trucks that are rolling off assembly lines today stand as an example of how significant cuts in greenhouse gas emissions can rebuild the economy and continue to support the high environmental standards to which we aspire. Those are results that can be replicated in other industries as we modernize infrastructure, energy systems and more. It’s exactly the kind of good for the environment, good for the economy investments we are working everyday to recreate.

On Earth Day of all days, it’s important to remind ourselves of how far this kind of work can reach into the future.

How do companies with ambitious global growth strategies secure the water they need to fuel business growth in a world where simply paying more for water will not work?

The answer resides in why and how companies align their water stewardship strategies to support their business growth strategies. This alignment is built upon two key actions. First, companies that synchronize water stewardship strategy with growth strategy can benefit from considering and quantifying water’s full business value, moving beyond the price of water to take into account water’s various impacts on operations, value chain, brand, and growth prospects. Second, companies that depend on water would also benefit from proactively leading collective action initiatives with stakeholders across their value chain within the watersheds in which they operate. Actions in these two areas go well beyond most companies’ current thinking on water management, which focuses primarily on water efficiency and reuse and recycling within their operations.

A “license-to-grow” model

Considering water as a scarce resource necessary for growth brings into sharp focus the particular issues organizations must face when operational or economic logic is insufficient to support business growth. Where water scarcity is concerned, we have observed that firms generally follow the trajectory described by the maturity model.

Managing water scarcity and driving growth: What are the critical business decisions?

Companies whose operations and growth depend on water should also be aware of where they fall along the stages of maturity outlined above. Understanding where a company sits on the maturity model can help frame the steps needed to address water risk and to align its water strategy with its business growth strategy.

For companies looking to leverage their water strategy to drive business growth, I recommend asking the following questions as they relate to the value chain:

What or who do water prices depend upon?

How likely are prices to fluctuate and why?

What are the water scarcity risks common to all users?

What water scarcity-related risks are particular to one’s own company?

How severe are these risks to the way the company does business today?

How severe are these risks to prospects for future growth?

What is the value of water to the company’s business and growth strategy?

Where will engagement with stakeholders increase the overall value of this resource to the firm (including increases in value driven by risk and cost reductions)?

You can’t always buy what you need, but with an understanding of the business value of water and an enterprise-wide strategy to engage with stakeholders, you may be able to secure a long-term supply of the water you need to support business growth.

Forty-five years ago today, 20 million Americans gathered in parks, auditoriums and college campuses across the country to demonstrate support for environmental protection and reform.

Many consider that spring day in 1970 as the birth of the environmental movement, the first in a series of events that eventually led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts.

Today Earth Day is celebrated in more than 192 countries.

How can you make a difference on Earth Day? Small steps by individuals can add up to be as powerful as the changes a large organization can make.

Skip the Drive-Thru

Instead of waiting in the drive-thru line for your morning coffee, find a parking spot and order inside. Idling for 15 minutes burns through an average of a quarter of a gallon, adding another $1 to the cost of your latte.

Another alternative is to opt for a vehicle equipped with technology that conserves fuel lost during idling. Stop-start technology, standard on the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu and Impala, helps customers conserve fuel by automatically shutting off the engine when the vehicle comes to a complete stop, such as at a stop light or drive-thru.

Be More Energy Efficient

Energy efficiency helps consumers and the environment. Saving energy reduces utility costs and greenhouse gas emissions. It’s a win-win.

There are a number of strategies and tactics for reducing energy use at home. Some require little to no investment, such as replacing incandescent lightbulbs with energy efficient LED light bulbs or turning the lights off when you leave a room.

When you’re shopping for anything from a TV to a washing machine, look for the ENERGY STAR® label—it’ll help save your pocketbook and the environment. GM is an ENERGY STAR partner for doing many of the same things you can do in your home, but on a grander scale.

Go Electric

While the current cost of fuel may be low, purchasing an electric vehicle has long term benefits – for consumers and the environment. There are a number of plug-in based vehicles on the market today that can save green, like the all-electric Spark EV and extended range electric Chevrolet Volt .

Since the Chevrolet Volt debuted five years ago, Volt owners have saved over 35 million gallons of gas by driving almost 700 million electric miles. That’s equivalent to more than 28,000 trips around the Earth.

Current generation Volt owners go an average of 900 miles between fill ups, and the 2016 Volt will average more than 1,000 miles between trips to the pump. Those savings add up, which benefits you and the environment in the long run.

Reduce, Recycle and Reuse

From recycling paper and glass bottles to switching to reusable shopping bags and food containers, there are countless ways to reduce waste – and reduce your environmental footprint in the process.

With a little ingenuity, you can even turn trash into treasure by finding a secondary use for waste materials. Have assorted plastics and scrap paper lying around? Turn it into an arts and crafts project. Coffee grounds and food scraps make for great composting. Why not reuse that discarded organic material to grow a vegetable garden at home?

Take Your Car to a Professional Car Wash

On average, professional car washes use 8-20 gallons of water to wash a single vehicle, while people washing their rides at home will use anywhere from 20-100 gallons of water per vehicle .

Most professional car washes use computer-controlled systems and high-pressure pumps that allow them to clean your car thoroughly while conserving water. Many have also adopted water reclamation technology, which captures and treats water from previous wash cycles so it can be recycled for future use. We use a similar technology to recycle water used in weatherproof testing on the 2016 Buick Cascada.

Just as residential and commercial paint manufacturers are thinking more about environmental impact, GM is reimagining its paint shops to reduce its carbon footprint and increase customer satisfaction with the looks of their new ride.

First, a primer in paint.

Did you know that nearly 70 percent of the energy required to put a car together in a plant is in the paint process? Why? A car has three layers of paint – the base coat, the color and metallic coat, and the clear coat. It typically takes up to 2.5 megawatt hours of energy to paint a vehicle. To put that into perspective, that’s enough electricity to power a U.S. home for nine weeks.

We focus quite a bit of attention on paint shops to reduce this energy, lessen the carbon load and provide a high-quality vehicle.

Starting in 2011, Orion Assembly, home of the Buick Verano, pioneered the use of a water-based “three-wet” paint process in the United States in a new paint shop. This process eliminated the need for a primer bake oven, normally used between the primer and color-coating layers. The result: three layers of paint applied — primer, color and clear coat one after another while still wet — before the vehicle takes a single trip through the oven. This plant now only uses about 1 megawatt hours of energy to paint each vehicle, less than half the energy used in the system that it replaced.

We’re optimizing every aspect of the paint process to use less electrical and thermal energy. We’re maximizing process control and stability. The outcome of our efforts is a shiny and durable finish with less environmental impact.

Appearance and durability

So how does this translate into value for the new Buick customer? The surface texture of the car will be high-gloss and un-textured due to three layers of wet paint going on in sequence before being baked. You should be able to see your reflection in it.

Our clear coat also enhances overall durability. Everyday nuisances like tree sap, bird droppings and water spots can leave a mark on any clear coat, but a vehicle like the Verano is more resistant to such factors because of the paint process. The stronger chemical bond of our two-component clear coat makes the surface harder to chip, scratch or damage – good news when you’re driving down the highway during pothole season.

Less environmental impact

We’ve been using the three-wet process for the last four years, and continue to roll it out at other facilities. In fact, we’re installing new three-wet paint shops at our Fairfax, Kansas and Flint, Michigan plants in the U.S., as well as two assembly facilities in China—SGM Wuhan and SGM Norsom.

One unconventional way we tackle further energy reductions is by participating in the Environmental Defense Fund’s Climate Corp program.

Jon Beck, our EDF Climate Corps Fellow from 2013, helped us save $1 million per year through various energy-saving project ideas. Some of his recommendations continue to be implemented, including adjustments to paint shop ventilation systems and reductions in pumping power.

At Orion Assembly, an addition of 12 variable-speed drives on pumps that optimize the flow of fluids during various steps of the painting process helped reduce electricity use by 148 megawatt hours per year. This smart investment will reduce operating costs by $118,000 annually while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

But, back to our customer. Whenever we can reduce energy costs in the manufacturing process, it lowers the cost of the vehicle for our customers, or enables us to add in more features.

The big picture

Energy reductions continue to occur at Orion Assembly as we optimize our manufacturing processes throughout the building. The site earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR(R) Challenge for Industry and is designated a Clean Corporate Citizen by the State of Michigan. It also got off of coal entirely three years ago. Two thirds of the plant’s energy consumption is renewable energy generated through landfill gas, and a 350-kilowatt solar array on its grounds generates electricity that powers the grid.

A circular economy is one that is restorative by design, and which aims to keep products, components and materials at their highest utility and value, at all times. It sounds great on paper, but how does it work in reality, and who’s doing the work to get us there? Is it just the latest business buzzword, as Google Trends looks to indicate, or is this just the beginning of a new economic revolution?

Companies like General Motors and Nike would argue for the latter, and they’re leading a pilot project in the United States aimed at kicking material reuse into high gear, like a 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. The basic idea is to set up a cloud-based landing zone for companies to post details about their material flows so that they can identify collaborative reuse possibilities. The U.S. Business Council for Sustainable Development will use its 20-plus years of experience and online materials marketplace software to gather materials data, help identify possible synergies and share them with the participating companies.

Participants thus far include an array of global companies from textile, consumer products, metals, mining, logistics and chemicals industries. Each company has dozens of US operations and manufacturing sites that would be involved. The Corporate Eco Forum and World Business Council for Sustainable Development are co-collaborators in this scale-up project, scheduled to launch in May 2015.

GM and Nike are long-time leaders in designing cross-industry material reuse. Both have helped overhaul supply chains to convert traditional waste streams into products like car parts or clothing. Other companies involved are equally innovative, making this a first-ever circular US marketplace at the national level. This effort will require working with material collection companies and processors, and engaging with company designers to establish and expand cost-effective reuse markets.

One core goal is to keep the materials circulating here in the U.S. rather than going overseas or into landfills. Designers, asset managers and procurement teams will explore and identify ways of replacing virgin materials with reused streams in product offerings. GM has long been actively pursuing this approach and, in the process, has established new layers of economic growth and jobs based on creative material reuse.

Another goal is linking with the growing demand in the U.S. for more effective post-consumer recycling plans, which are being championed by consumer-facing companies like PepsiCo, Alcoa and Walmart. The average recycling rate across the country is below 20 percent. Finding ways to connect post-consumer and industrial material flows to achieve critical mass, infrastructure investment and new markets offers another breakthrough opportunity for the project.

This is a scalable circular economy initiative being led by U.S. companies. All of the participants want to establish an effective, safe and productive online marketplace that allows companies, city departments and other organizations to take our underutilized materials, partially used transportation systems, and off-gases for what they really are – valuable assets that have gone undiscovered. We look forward to reporting on this exciting initiative later this summer.

Nestled in the basement of one of downtown Detroit’s reinvigorated office buildings, is a quirky, vibrant place that’s bursting with creativity. Visitors are greeted by a buzzing neon sign and an un-manned astronaut spacesuit as they enter dPoP! inside Bedrock’s 23-story Chrysler House. The ‘out of this world’ design mecca (where designers, artists and others plan the creation of amazing, functional spaces) is a study in the use of reclaimed materials. Old bank vaults are transformed into some of the coolest conference rooms you’ve ever seen, book shelves are made from black iron pipes and salvaged wood from demolished Detroit homes, and there’s a wall filled with remnants – from a vintage fan to an ornate globe to found fixtures and signs – which is truly one-of-a-kind.

“When we start designing a building, we immediately look for things we can repurpose,” explains dPoP! CEO Melissa Price. “We’ve used elevator doors, floor tiles, reclaimed wood and even an old piano. Past generations entered the workforce to replace what came before, but this generation is more concerned with improving what’s already in place. Reclaimed objects appeal to that millennial need for sustainability. And it just looks better. You can’t find these things in a shop!”

Over the last several years, dPoP! has helped Bedrock and the Quicken Loans Family of Companies revitalize dozens of historic buildings and office spaces in downtown Detroit – and we are just getting started. Since 2011, Bedrock and its affiliates have invested $1.7 billion in more than 70 properties in the city’s urban core. We take previously abandoned, world class, turn of the century architecture and infuse it with energy-saving LED lighting, HVAC controls, hands free low-flow faucets and many other new fixtures and materials that allow for greater energy conservation and less waste. Groups like EcoWorks and Reclaim Detroit partner with our construction team to salvage and recycle building materials, fixtures and artifacts.

Our property management team, comprised of millennials and Gen Xers, collaborates and brings experience and innovation together to create amazingly SMART buildings. We also install amenities geared toward the mobile millennial, such as Zagster bikes, Zip Cars and car charging stations, and we even use green cleaning supplies. This year, we introduced compactor sharing amongst buildings in smaller areas to reduce clutter in alleys. Our properties recycle paper, light bulbs, batteries and more.

Our efforts have not only created award-winning Class A office spaces, they continue to attract Fortune 500 companies like Fifth Third Bank and Ally Financial, high-tech entrepreneurial startups like Quikly and Detroit Labs, restaurants including Wright & Co., Dime Store, 7 Greens, Punch Bowl Social and Freshii, retail shops like the new John Varvatos store, Moosejaw and Nojo Kicks, and everything in between. And millennials. Lots of them. Young people are flocking to Detroit for opportunities, both personally and professionally, and the chance to help bring positive change.

Our millennials steer our ship. We let them guide us on what matters and what needs to be implemented to impact the mission. This includes community outreach efforts like blight clean up, and support for organizations like the Detroit 300 Conservancy, which restores and activates major parks like Campus Martius, attracting artists and musicians. Our millennial team members volunteered more than 75,000 hours in community service last year alone (22,000 of which supported neighborhood development initiatives in Detroit). Many of our volunteers are college-aged interns. Our Family of Companies employs more than 1,000 interns from across the country each summer.

This year, we will expand the residential market to create many more opportunities for millennials to live in the city – where high speed internet is currently being installed and the state-of-the-art M-1 Rail line construction is underway. There is much more to come as we continue to build our high tech corridor – the future has never looked brighter.

Want to experience the impact for yourself? Come visit us in downtown Detroit. We’ll be happy to arrange a tour!

To hear key stakeholders in the auto industry say “the car is not a finished product” may be somewhat alarming. However, these executives were talking specifically about the connected car, and how much potential remains for innovation.

While the industry has made great strides in developing connected vehicles, it’s widely acknowledged there is unfulfilled customer demand and still a long way to go.

After hearing the conversations coming out of the TechWeek Detroit conference, it’s clear many of those changes will be imagined, developed, tested and implemented in the Motor City.

Greg Ross, Business Development and Alliances director for GM’s Global Connected Customer Experience, participated in a panel at TechWeek Detroit along with Tome Software founder and CEO Jake Sigal (founder and former CEO of Livio), Pandora Automotive Partnerships VP George Lynch, and Paula Sorrell, Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Venture Capital VP for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

The panel, moderated by senior TechCrunch editor Matt Burns, generated an interesting discussion about how the climate for automotive innovation has changed greatly during the past few years.

Lynch – who originally helped launch satellite radio in vehicles – mentioned how radio units in the vehicle used to only be updated every five-to-ten years, and now, we’re in a position where these are being updated every few years. Ross added the goal is actually to provide updates to these units every few months, in order to stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and customer expectations established by the consumer electronics industry.

The connectivity that’s being put in place today in vehicles will pave the way for more personalization and advancement in the near future.

Ross discussed the launch of OnStar with 4G LTE last summer and how it serves as a platform for innovation.

Today, owners of most 2015 and newer Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles can enjoy a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot that allows passengers to connect up to seven mobile devices. Later this year, that same embedded connection will enable new services like Smart Driver Assessment, which could result in insurance discounts, and Proactive Alerts, which can notify an owner of a potential issue with their vehicle before it takes place, giving drivers added peace of mind as vehicles age.

In the more distant future, it will be an enabler for autonomous driving services, as it will allow cars to communicate with each other and infrastructure.

All the panelists noted how safety and customer understanding are priorities for automakers when implementing new services. Sigal advised this should always be taken into consideration when smaller companies or entrepreneurs are looking to work with automakers.

“You need to ask OEMs ‘What problems do you have?’ and ‘How we can help solve it?’” said Sigal.

Not only is the approach towards automotive technology changing, but so is the climate for innovation.

While Silicon Valley may be known as the epicenter for technology development, Detroit and the state of Michigan are quickly gaining ground.

Sorrell shed light on how more and more, hungry, tech-focused entrepreneurs have been coming to and staying in Michigan.

Ten years ago, there were about 50 start-up companies in the state of Michigan and today there are approximately 3,000. In addition to start-ups, experienced CEOs and Venture Capitalists (VCs) are also migrating to the Mitten State, according to Sorrell.

“Today the attitude has changed significantly,” said Sigal. ”New ideas are welcomed, failure is welcomed. With programs like Techstars Mobility, with what MEDC has been supporting, TechTown Detroit, AnnArbor SPARK, Automation Alley, all of the VCs, it’s a significantly different time for innovation and economic growth in metro Detroit.”

At GM, we’re continually looking for ways to make transportation more efficient – from connected vehicle technology that alleviates congestion to a growing portfolio of electrified vehicles.

As we innovate new advanced technologies to make autos greener, we’re also looking at alternative solutions to today’s mobility challenges.

Case in point: the bike share program we introduced at our Warren Technical Center in August.

We partnered with Zagster to give our 19,000 employees who work there new options for getting to and from the 61 buildings covering the 330-acre campus.

The program was the first of its kind from any U.S. automaker and an instant success. So much so, we’re expanding the program to meet growing demand from our Tech Center workforce. Twenty new bikes and seven docking stations will be added, bringing the total number of bikes to 70 at 14 stations.

The popularity of the bike share was one reason for the expansion. How popular, you ask? Zagster estimates Tech Center employees pedaled some 2,800 miles during the first five months of the program, more than the driving distance from New York City to Los Angeles.

The bike share has increased worker productivity, too. Employees using the service save between 10 to 30 minutes a day commuting across campus on two wheels.

“The Zagster program is a triple play for GM, as it increases productivity, makes our employees happy, and helps us continue to make progress on our sustainability goals,” said GM Director of Sustainability David Tulauskas. “Additionally, the program is providing key data we can use as we reimagine mobility on campus settings and in densely populated areas.”

Biking to meetings is a convenient, practical, healthy and emissions-free way to commute. It’s just one example of how we’re transforming transportation.

A Haiku is a lot like a Chevrolet Cruze, and in honor of National Haiku day we tried to explain how with one of the three lined poems:

Timeless and graceful
Haiku’s like a simile
For Chevrolet Cruze

Literary geeks rejoice: That’s a simile in a haiku. April is National Poetry Month and Haiku Day is celebrated on the 17th – due to the amount of syllables found in a haiku. Sure, Hai-Cruze sounds like just a convenient pun, but both the car and the poem pack a lot into a small package.

But don’t let us try to convince you. Chevrolet took the opportunity to team up with the Japanese American Citizens League in the Pacific Southwest region and challenged members to write haiku about the Chevrolet Cruze.

Here are the best submissions:

What could be more fun
Than Chevy Cruze on the run
Catch one to see why

-Kevin Tamaki, Valencia, Calif.

Singing in my Cruze
Sunny day, wind in my face
Smiling in my Cruze

-Randy Okamura, San Diego, Calif.

“We’re just having fun encouraging people to express themselves,” said Steve Majoros, Chevrolet Cruze marketing manager.

So, don’t let the day go to waste. Now that you know it’s National Haiku Day, put your poetry hat on and try writing your own. Post your best Hai-Cruze in the comment section below.

How does Buick ensure the 2016 Cascada convertible will stay dry when April showers come calling? By making it rain on the assembly line, assuring cloudbursts will be no match for Cascada when it hits dealerships in early 2016.

“Convertibles are best enjoyed when it’s warm and sunny, but Cascada has been designed and engineered to be used year-round, regardless of the weather,” said John Dolch, program quality manager for Cascada. “Not only is Cascada’s top engineered to be weatherproof in extreme conditions, but each and every Cascada built will also be put through a rigorous water test.”

Specialized water test booths, located at the end of Cascada’s assembly line, will allow freshly built cars to roll off the line and into testing. Each booth has no fewer than 124 individual nozzles, which will quickly immerse the Cascada in a miniature rainstorm for 10 minutes.

Each nozzle emits 1.9 gallons of water every minute. Cascada’s test is designed to produce nearly the equivalent of 1.23 inches of rain in a minute, which matches a world record set in Unionville, Md. in 1956.

Additionally, two Cascadas will be randomly selected daily to undergo another water test, known as the “deluge.” While this test is designed to last only eight minutes, each nozzle blasts roughly three gallons of water each minute.

Much like actual rain clouds, Cascada’s water testing booths are also part of a water cycle. While nearly 132,000 gallons of water – or nearly 5,500 full bathtubs – will be used daily, only 1.5 percent of that volume is lost to evaporation. The other 98.5 percent of the water used will be collected, filtered and recycled for use in later tests.

These tests may seem extreme, but they’re especially important given April showers are more than an old proverb. As winter gives way to spring, rain showers are bound to splash cities across the U.S. with more than a little precipitation.

“Typically, April sees weather patterns bring in more moisture from the Gulf, especially in the eastern half of the United States,” said Jim Piro and Allan Reppert, AccuWeather climatology supervisor and meteorologist, respectively. “Rainfall for the spring looks to be wet along much of the East Coast, from New York south into northern Florida, and stretching along the Gulf Coast into eastern Texas.”

Some spring showers may take drivers by surprise on an otherwise sunny day, but Cascada engineers came prepared. Its power-folding top will be fully deployed in as little as 17 seconds, and at speeds up to 31 mph.

Beginning in early 2016, Cascada owners in arid corners of the U.S. may not have to worry about facing those showers, but they may still appreciate the result of these tests.

“Chances are good you’ll still clean the car with a pressure washer, or run it through an automated car wash,” Dolch said. “The same watertight concerns will still apply, even under clear blue skies.”

Launched last fall, the Reuse Opportunity Collaboratory Detroit (ROC Detroit) is comprised of a diverse group of companies, academic institutions, non-profits and government agencies with a strong common interest in creating environmental, beneficial societal and economic opportunities from Detroit’s underutilized materials. The collaboration is breathing new (second) life into old byproducts.

ROC Detroit held its second meeting last week, bringing together familiar faces from the fall gathering and brand new faces.

Jeff Hohlfeldt, business development and engineering manager at Northern Industrial Manufacturing, attended the first ROC Detroit event. Jeff was looking to find someone who could reuse two of the company’s waste streams – grinding sludge used to cut down metal parts and crushed corn cob used to dull the edges of the cut material. “The corn cob is a big waste stream for us – something like 60 or 70 thousand pounds a year,” he said. “I mean come on, it’s corn. We have to be able to find a reuse for that.”

One person Jeff approached at the event as a possible reuse partner was Pashon Murray, founder of composting company Detroit Dirt. Pashon collects food scraps from various Detroit businesses to create nutrient rich compost that feeds urban gardens across the city. GM and Pashon have partnered on a number of facility composting initiatives that have fed projects in Southwest Detroit. Currently, Pashon collects food prep scraps from our landfill-free global headquarters and then uses that compost to fuel our rooftop garden on an adjacent parking garage.

This waste innovation and collaboration is happening across the country, not just in Detroit. The U.S. Business Council for Sustainable Development, which helped start ROC Detroit, has also helped launch and/or manage waste synergy projects in a number of cities across eight states. The nonprofit business association is rolling out a new online tool called the Materials Marketplace that enables participants to easily post available or desired waste materials, identify reuse opportunities, and exchange underutilized materials.

The Materials Marketplace is proving to be a “resourceful” tool to many groups in Texas. In fact, our call center in Austin recently joined in on the trash-to-treasure hunt taking place in the Lone Star State. We were able to supply more than 75 cubic yards of waste – everything from old TV and computers monitors to unused tables and chairs – to a local office product and supply company, which netted them an estimated resale value of $3,000 and saved the call center around $600 in recycling costs. Just as important, the transaction diverted this waste from ending up in landfill.

Another collaboration is underway in Spring Hill, Tennessee, home to the assembly plant where we build the Chevrolet Equinox. We initiated the first Suppliers’ Partnership for the Environment Southern Network forum there in 2013, a forum that brought together fellow automakers, their suppliers, recycling partners and government officials to discuss waste-reduction challenges, recycling opportunities and capabilities.

John Bradburn, GM’s global manager for waste reduction/resident MacGyver, said connecting these various partnerships is key to overcoming tough waste challenges.

“Groups such as Suppliers Partnership and the U.S. BCSD are now joining forces to best manage their materials systematically. That may not have happened years ago. There may have been a little anxiety with doing such a thing. But now they’re saying ‘you know what, we’re going to be stronger and accomplish more by working together, so let’s join forces here.’”

From Detroit to Tennessee to Austin and beyond, these collaborations are helping ensure industrial waste doesn’t go to waste.

If you have been keeping up on our series of posts for new car buyers, you have learned about choosing the type of vehicle that best fits your life and how to narrow down your choices. Now, you’re ready to locate your ideal vehicle, kick some tires and take it for a spin!

There are quite a few websites you can utilize to find your specific vehicle of interest. Your first stop should be the manufacturer’s – or a specific local dealer’s – website.

In addition to these common contact methods, some automaker and dealership websites now have a Live Chat feature. You can see some of these services in real-time if you are considering a Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, or Cadillac vehicle. Below is an example of a real chat interaction with an interested customer, which will give you an idea of how easy it is to get your questions answered.

Some other popular web options include Edmunds.com, KBB.com, Cars.com and AutoTrader.com. When you search for your vehicle on sites like these, they typically bring up general vehicle information, highlighted options, VIN, MSRP, and the name and address of a dealership with the vehicle in stock.

There’s always a chance someone else might be looking at the same vehicle as you. So, it’s always a good idea to call or email the dealership to confirm your specific model is still in stock and unsold.

Once you know your vehicle is available, the dealership will invite you to come down and see it for yourself, get behind the wheel, and take it for a test drive. This visit is a great time to ask questions about the vehicle. There are some questions you may not think to ask prior to seeing the vehicle:

When you first visit the dealership, it’s important you know there is no pressure to purchase or sign anything right away. Simply make your intentions clear when you set the appointment, and then again when you arrive. Don’t be afraid to confirm the vehicle they show you is the exact same one you saw online by checking the VIN.

THE FINER DETAILS

Everyone thinks a test drive is easy; you just show up, drive the car around, and that’s it. There’s much more to it than that. When you’re out for a test drive, here are some things to take into consideration:

Do you have ample space for your kids or other regular passengers? Consider backseat space if you’ll be using child safety seats, and think about cargo and trunk space if you regularly haul sports equipment.

What’s it like driving the vehicle at night? With the added importance of seeing your surroundings at night, this could be a big factor most drivers don’t think about – the shape and manner in which headlights project on the road.

How does the vehicle handle on the highway? Does it have the power you need for merging into traffic? How does it handle getting on and off the freeway?

Finally, what about parking your car in a garage or designated space where you live or work? Will this vehicle fit comfortably in those spaces? Will the mirrors stick out just a little bit too wide? Sometimes it helps to actually park the car in the exact space you use daily, provided it’s close enough to the dealership and the dealer allows it. Or, you can measure your home parking space prior to the visit, and then compare it to the width or length of the vehicle when you see it at the dealer. Remember, there are no bad questions when making an investment in a new vehicle!

The final objective to consider upon visiting a dealership is to ask them about final pricing and if they are offering any incentives for your vehicle of interest. “MSRP” means Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price. However, often times the final sale price can be lower than this posted price, or the price you may have seen online! Once you arrive at an agreed-upon price, make sure the price includes all tax, title, license and destination freight charges, so you will know exactly how much you will need to finance. We will touch more on this topic in our final post.

Overall, don’t be afraid to weigh all your options and go with your gut! Visit multiple dealerships in your search, and once you find the dealership whose service and personality falls in line with yours, then you can prepare yourself for the imminent purchase. It’s time to get excited, as the finish line is near.

Stay tuned for our final story in the series, which will put the finishing touches on your adventure. We’ll cover final preparations for financing, insurance, and best of all, taking delivery. See you then!
