Here’s how it happened

I woke up one morning to check my statistics… WHAT? I got 3000 visitors in one day? Cool!

I then hurriedly scanned my analytics to find out what was causing the huge spike in traffic.

I  discovered that a twitter power user, Jon Winokur @AdvicetoWriters, tweeted my blog post called 9 Confusing Confusions in English Grammar, which I published back in November 2010.

Here’s the tweet

When Jon tweeted my blog post, the snowball effect happened. His followers saw his tweet and retweeted it, and their followers saw their retweets and retweeted too; ultimately his tweet reached his followers’ followers’ followers. Get it?

I checked my stats again to analyze the visitors three days since the tweet.

I checked how long these visitors spent on my page. Wow, the average time they spent reading my post was about 7:00 minutes! Not bad!

What we can learn from this

i. Targeted content

Now, it wasn’t just some power user who tweeted that post. It was a power user who solely focuses on writing advice—Jon (@AdvicetoWriters).

ii. Real followers

Jon has more than 60,000 followers (and has been listed over 4,000 times), and he is only following about 800 people!—which means his followers don’t auto-reciprocate or something, but they genuinely follow him because he gives top-notch advice for writers.

Maybe that’s why his tweets get a lot of attention and he is very influential.

iii. Some numbers

Seeing the stats of his bit.ly link, Jon’s link was retweeted 68 times, and it received 3,154 clicks! That means that tweet to his 60,000 followers resulted in about 3,000 clicks, about 5%.

That’s not bad actually. Not everyone who has 100,000’s of followers can achieve that! One time a person with more than 100,000 followers tweeted a good post of one of my friends, but he told me nothing much happened.

iv. Quality content

That post I wrote about confusions in English grammar was not easy to write.

It took me like a whole week to write, revise, proofread, and repeat. And 3 months to learn about grammar in school. But ultimately, quality content brings a lot of benefit to your blog, so it’s worth the hard work writing it.

And THAT’s how much a tweet from a power user is worth! It’s always nice to occasionally get a spike in traffic (thanks a lot, Jon @AdvicetoWriters; I appreciate it!).

Just like many other bloggers out there, I’ve often asked myself the question “how often should I post to keep my readers satisfied?”.

While I haven’t found a definitive answer to it yet, and honestly I don’t believe I ever will – blogging is dynamic, it requires adjustment all the time – I’ve sure learned quite a few important things about posting rhythm in the meanwhile.

No Definitive Rules

There are no clear cut rules regarding posting frequency. While many successful bloggers post every day, some even multiple times, others post less frequently – one or two times per week. It all depends on the type of blog you’re running, on your time, and of course, on your personal style.

The all important point here is to understand yourself and the scope of your blog and to find the posting rhythm that works best for you. Because doing so is not necessarily easy, I’m going to talk about some things you should look at.

Finding Your Pace

Many inexperienced bloggers think that if they fail to post every day they have no aptitude for blogging whatsoever.

This is not true. I’ve been through it myself, and I know really well how demoralizing it can be to fail to meet the posting goals you’ve set yourself. Fortunately, there simply isn’t any posting limit that guarantees your success – it’s all about testing and experimenting.

Consider carefully these factors when deciding how often you make updates:

• The popularity of your niche. The more activity there is on rival blogs the more posts you have to make.
• The average length of your posts.
• Your readership’s expectations.
• Your aspirations. If you plan to keep your blog personal and be the only one updating it you shouldn’t set a too ambitious posting limit you won’t be able to keep up with.

It’s Better to Start Slow

I remember when I started my diet blog of Medifast coupons and Diet to Go discounts, I determined I will post 3 times a week.

By setting an easily achievable posting norm in the beginning you’ll be able to reach your goals and, more importantly, you’ll avoid that which might kill your blogging aspirations altogether: failure to update your content frequently.

Making up your mind to post every day is not going to work if you’re not used to it. Not only will there be moments when you’ll struggle to write your posts, but also, in the instances when you manage to pull it off, the quality of your content will suffer. And quality content is the backbone of every successful blog

So start slow and gradually increase your posting frequency. Three posts per week is usually good to start with.

Be Constant and Pay Attention to Your Readers’ Response

When increasing or decreasing your posting frequency monitor your readers’ response. I’ve noticed that readers are particularly paying attention when there is an abundance of material.

However, if they find that the content they have to digest is becoming more than they can handle, then some will get a bit annoyed. Refrain from abruptly modifying your posting rhythm or you might lose a couple of readers.

Be constant when it comes to adding material to your blog and make sure you let your audience know when you’re making considerable modifications in this regard. They’ll appreciate it.

Determine What Is Affecting Your Posting Rate & Address It

Have you ever scrutinized your posting process to determine where blockages occur? If you haven’t then you definitely should. It will help you tremendously to increase your posting proficiency.

If coming up with ideas gives you the most trouble, then try to address this by assigning some time every week for brainstorming, and by getting into the habit of thinking about ideas way before deadlines.

Planning in advance will prevent pressure from building up, which always takes its toll on your efficiency.

On the other hand, if generating ideas is your strong point, but you find difficult finishing the articles you’ve started, then try to change the way you work, shifting the focus from quantity to quality.

Obstructions in the writing process can appear almost anywhere. It’s important to identify them and to come up with solutions.

When You Don’t Have Anything Good to Post Don’t Post

If you’re ever in doubt whether to post or not a modest piece it’s almost always safer not to. From what I’ve seen, the reaction of readers is worse when they read something second rate than when they have to wait a day or two more for new content.

If a post doesn’t provide information, inspiration, or entertainment for your reader, then think twice about submitting it.

Efficiency Improves With Time – Be Patient

With time it becomes easier to keep your blog updated, but you don’t need someone else to tell you this. Think of any activity you’ve been doing for a long time. Don’t you carry it out now much better than you did in the beginning? The same applies to blogging. The more effort you invest into posting and the more time you set aside for it the better you’ll become.

Remember that you must find your own posting rhythm, and don’t be easily discouraged when you’re not as productive as you would like. Just keep at it. Results will come.

Google XML Sitemaps makes it easy for the search engine crawlers to look at your site. It pings Google, Bing, Yahoo and Ask.com with any changes that you have made to your blog. Tweak your plugins, customize your parameters and priorities.

6. Akismet

Akismet is essential to preventing spam comments from your blog.

It will hold those posts for moderation to let you determine whether you have received a visit from the spam bots.

It is activated by using your Akismet API Key. There is a counter which will tell you how much spam Akismet has captured.

Interlink your posts and make your blog rise in the page rankings on Google.

This plugin works automatically to connect phrases, tags, categories and pages within your blog. You can set the links themselves to open in new windows for those who want to stay on your blog.

8. LinkWithin

If you want to help your users find other posts on your blog that are related to the one they’re reading, then this plugin is a great way to show related posts.

First of all, I would like to wish you a happy and prosperous 2011!

2010 has been a great year for me and I hope it was a great year for you too

I was going to post this earlier, but I’ve been really, really busy since it’s been the first weeks of secondary school.

Here are 6 events in 2010 that are very special to me.

1. I was the first runner-up in the Blog4FT contest.
2. I wrote my 1Malaysia song.
3. I became a host for TV2’s program Kembara@Kids on 2. (Watch me! – RTM TV2, each Saturday, shown during cartoon breaks every half hour from 7:30am – 10:00am [i.e. 7:30, 8:00, 8,30 ... 10:00])
4. I got 5A’s in the UPSR exam!
5. My second poetry book, Creative Row Your Boats, was appreciated and ordered by the National Libraries of Malaysia.
6. I made my first short film!

Secondary School

So yeah, I’ve turned 13 years old on January 3rd, 2011, so I’m no longer 12 years old. *sighs* Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

(Hahaha. Get it? “Fruit flies” *like* a banana. )

So now, I’m in Victoria Institution (aka V.I.) secondary school. I’m really thankful I got into this school, because it is one of the oldest schools in Kuala Lumpur.

The first weeks of school has been great for me. I made a lot of new friends.

I stay in a hostel, and I can only get to go back home approximately once a week, so I couldn’t go online frequently, at the moment.

Short Film: The Highest Skyscraper on Earth

My first short film, is called The Highest Skyscraper on Earth, based on my poem. I finished it during the last week of December 2009. It is something that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time.

Plans for Gloson Blog

Even though I live in a hostel, I’ll do my best to find a way to manage my blog as well.

And maybe, since I’ve done the making-of for my short film, I think I’ll consider vlogging (or video-blogging) because you can be more creative with it and your readers will get to know you on a more personal level. Vlogging is a thing that complements your blogging!

Also, I’ve got a blog post by a guest blogger coming up on the 31st of January. More interesting posts are on the way too, so stay tuned my dear readers!

Some English grammar can be really confusing.

So, I decided to write this article to point out some grammar mistakes that cause much confusion, and also how to get them right.

I’ve made all of these grammar mistakes before, which is how I got to write this post, anyway .

And now, I present to you,

9 Most Confusing Confusions in English Grammar!

1. Subject pronouns and object pronouns

Wrong: He sat between you and I.
Correct: He sat between you and me.

I now fully understand this rule once I took an English lesson about subject and object pronouns.

The subject is the one that does things. (He sees me)

The object is the one who has the thing done to him. (He sees me)

Another type of object is the prepositional object and it is the one which the preposition is directed at. (He sees it with me)

So, here is a table of subject and object pronouns.

So, if you are using a pronoun as a subject, use a subject pronoun. Same thing on the objects.

It’s “between you and me” because “you and me” is the object of the preposition between.

It’s “I know him” because “him” is the object of the verb “know”.

It’s “William and he read” because “William and he” is the subject.

2. Who or whom?

Here’s a tricky one: “Who/whom did he see at the party?”

Here’s what you need to know:

Who = subject pronoun
Whom = object pronoun

So, to get the answer, change the question to a statement: “He did see whom at the party.”

Whom is an object, so that is the answer .

Question: “Who/whom ate all the cookies?” Statement: “Who ate all the cookies.”

Hope I’ve made it clear =) .

3. “Than me” or “Than I”?

Wrong: He runs faster than me.
Correct: He runs faster than I.

Ahh, this is one of the mistakes that I have been frequently making last time .

“Than” is a conjunction, which introduces a subordinate clause, so the subjective pronoun “I” is used. See usage note.

The easiest way to make sure this is right is to make the sentence “long”.

“He runs faster than I” becomes “He runs faster than I run”.

“I run slower than he” becomes “I run slower than he runs”.

However, there is an exception in which you have to use the object form of the pronoun. Here’s an example:

“Jon gave Dan more apples than he gave me” –> “Jon gave Dan more apples than me”.

4. “It is me” or “It is I”?

Wrong: It is me, the great tyrant Tyrannosaurus!
Correct: It is I, the great tyrant Tyrannosaurus!

It is important to note that “is” is a linking verb, meaning it renames the subject with a subject predicate.

Now, normal transitive verbs have an object. (He sees me) Me = object.

Linking verbs have subject predicates instead. (That guy was I) I = subject predicate.

Here’s another example. – “A dog is a great pet.”

A dog = subject
a great pet = subject predicate

You can see that “subject = subject predicate”. A dog = a great pet. That’s why they are called linking verbs; because they link two subjects.

And since linking verbs link to subjects, subject pronouns must be used. So that’s why it is “It is I” and not “It is me”.

I hope you get what I’m saying. Unfortunately, I think Mario will never get it.

5. i.e. and e.g.

Wrong: Please volunteer to bring some food for the party, i.e., fries, nuggets, and chips.
Correct: Please volunteer to bring some food for the party. e.g., fries, nuggets, and chips

Believe it or not, last time, I thought i.e. and e.g. can be used interchangeably! But I was wrong. i.e. and e.g. have different meanings.

e.g. = For example
i.e. = That is/In other words (for clarifying stuff)

Here are some examples.

To stay healthy, eat vegetables, e.g., spinach. <— Here I used an example of a vegetable.

I love to eat the vegetable that I like the most (i.e., carrots). <— Here I used i.e. because it clarifies the “vegetable that I like the most”. I cannot use e.g. because there is no vegetable other than that.

6. Lightening

This is perhaps the most common spelling mistake ever.

Wrong: Being struck by lightening is a shocking experience!

Correct: Being struck by lightning is a shocking experience!

Lightening
The present participle of lighten.

e.g. I was lightening the load on my camel because it was exhausted.

Lightning
A streak of static electricity through the sky, usually accompanied by thunder.

e.g. You got struck by lightning? That must have been a shocking experience!

Lighting
The arrangement of light, especially in photography.

e.g. The photo was dull because the lighting wasn’t good enough.

7. “If I was” or “If I were”?

Wrong: If I was an elephant, I would give you a ride.
Correct: If I were an elephant, I would give you a ride.

Wrong: If I were rude, I apologize.
Correct: If I was rude, I apologize.

“If I were” is more for situations when you are imagining things, usually followed by a sentence on what you would do in that situation.

If I were you, I would read more books about animals.
If he were an animal, he would be a parrot!

“If I was” is more for things that could have happened in the past or now.

If he was singing that well, he should become a singer. (This is an answer to a girl who told me that when her friend sang just now, her heart melted)

If she really was kind to animals, I respect her. (This is a thought after reading news about a girl saving a cat from drowning, but you are not really sure whether it’s true)

Here is an example of the differences between “If I were” and “If I was”.

If she was hardworking, she would be a famous singer by now. <– I’ve only met her once and all I know is she wants to be a famous singer.

If she were hardworking, she would be a famous singer by now. <– I know her very well; she wants to be a famous singer but she’s very lazy.

Conclusion: “If I were” is for imagination. “If I was” is for things that could have happened.

8. Lie down, don’t lie to me, and birds lay eggs

Oh dear. These 3 words are perhaps the most confusing as some parts of the three words are parts of each other.

Lie has two completely different meanings. The first meaning is to rest in a horizontal position. The second is to bear false witness.

Lay means to put into a position of rest or bring forth eggs.

Here are the tenses of the words:

Lie down – lie, lay, lain.
Don’t lie to me – Lie, lied, lied.
Lay eggs – lay, laid, laid.

That’s why they are confusing! They sound similar and you can easily have them mixed up!

Here are some examples of common mistakes when using those words.

Wrong: I have lied on the grass all morning.
Correct: I have lain on the grass all morning.

Wrong: I laid on the couch.
Correct: I lay on the couch.

So, here’s three things to remember when you’re not sure how to use those words:

Remember that lie (don’t lie) and lay are regular verbs, which mean they add the usual suffix “-d” to form the past tense (lied, laid). Their past participles (have lied, have laid) are the same.

Remember that the word lie (lie down) is the most complicated; an irregular verb; doesn’t use “-d”; past tense is lay, and past participle is lain.

Remember that the word lay is the only transitive verb – You can’t “lay” on the bed; you must lay something. You can lay yourself on the bed, though.

9. Take and bring

This is probably one of the most confusing confusions in grammar!

Whether to use bring or take all depends on the perspective. You use take when the item is going away from the perspective and bring when the item is coming to the perspective.

For example, you and your friend are going to a place. You might ask your friend, “Are you going to bring your cell phone?”

If you’re not going but your friend is, you might ask your friend, “Are you going to take your cell phone?”

But still, it can be confusing. So, use substitutes instead.

“Are you going to carry your cell phone with you?”

Problem solved .
