The word “Zoot” is jazz slang meaning extravagant style to which this guitar encapsulates. At first, you might think that this a clever paint job. Wrong! No paint on this guitar my friend…

The brand new body is built with multiple birch wood laminate, each laminate piece is dyed with a different color then compressed and bonded together to form one solid block of wood. Two coats of satin lacquer are then applied to provide a smooth finish and also help protect the body from any damage.

’50s Rounded Neck Profile
No guitar neck profiles are more distinguishable than the neck profiles employed on the Gibson models of today. The more traditional ’50s neck profile–found on the Les Paul Studio–is the thicker, rounder profile, emulating the neck shapes of the iconic 1958 and 1959 Les Paul Standards. The neck is machined in Gibson’s rough mill using wood shapers to make the initial cuts. But once the fingerboard gets glued on, the rest–including the final sanding–is done by hand. That means there are no two necks with the exact same dimensions. So while it still has the basic characteristics of its respective profile, each neck will be slightly different, with a distinct but traditional feel.

Gibson’s 490R and 498T Pickups
The mid to late 1960s saw the emergence of a very different type of music coming from the clubs of England. It was an interpretation of the blues that hadn’t been heard before, and it was much harder, more rocking, and definitely louder than anything else before it. As such, this new genre’s players were demanding more powerful amplifiers with increased volume outputs to satisfy their sonic explorations. This led to a call for a more versatile pickup to split coils through a push/pull knob, and prevent the microphonic feedback that occurs when the volume is turned up to maximum levels. Gibson answered this call with the introduction of the revolutionary 490T and 490R pickups (T for treble, and R for rhythm), which has the traditional characteristics of the original “Patent Applied For” pickups, but with two key modifications.

First, a four-conductor wiring scheme allows the 490s to be connected to any push/pull knob, which lets players split the coils and increase versatility. Gibson also introduced wax potting, which does away with any air space inside the pickup – thus lessening the chances of microphonic feedback. The result is a humbucker with the tonal characteristics of an original PAF, with a slight increase in upper mid-range response. The Gibson 498T bridge pickup is the 490’s ideal complement.

Taking the 490 one step further, the 498 swaps the Alnico II magnet to an Alnico V, thus making it slightly hotter with emphasis on mid-ranges and highs. The pole pieces on the 498T are also aligned a little further apart to accommodate the spacing of the strings at the bridge, which is different than the spacing of the strings at the neck.

22-Fret Rosewood Fingerboard
Both rosewood and ebony have always graced the fingerboards of the world’s finest stringed instruments, including many of today’s Gibsons. The fingerboards on Gibson’s Les Paul Studios are constructed from the highest grade rosewood and ebony on the planet. Both are personally inspected and qualified by Gibson’s team of skilled wood experts before they enter the factories to be fitted onto the neck of the Les Paul Studio. The resilience of these dense and durable woods makes these fingerboards extremely balanced and stable, and gives each chord and note unparalleled clarity and bite. The 12-inch radius of the fingerboard provides smooth note bending capabilities and eliminates “dead” or “choked out” notes, common occurrences on fingerboards with lesser radiuses. The ebony fingerboard is only available on the Les Paul Studios in Classic White or Alpine White. The Rosewood fingerboard is only available on the Studios in Ebony, Wine Red, and Fireburst.

Mahogany Back and Maple Top
There isn’t anything more critical than the marriage of the Les Paul’s mahogany back with a maple cap, as well as the regimen involved in selecting the right wood and the formula to dry it out. First, the wood is personally inspected and qualified by Gibson’s team of skilled wood experts before it enters the Gibson factories. These onsite inspectors also ensure that the plain maple comes from corporations adhering to the forest-saving standards of the Rainforest Alliance, of which Gibson is a proud member and sponsor.

Inside the Gibson factories, humidity is maintained at 45 percent, and the temperature at 70 degrees. This ensures all woods are dried to a level of equilibrium, where the moisture content does not change during the manufacturing process. This guarantees tight-fitting joints and no expansion, and controls the shrinkage and warping of the woods, in addition to reducing the weight. It also improves the woods’ machinability and finishing properties, and adherence to glue. Consistent moisture content means that a Gibson guitar will respond evenly to temperature and humidity changes long after it leaves the factory.

Chambered Body
There’s something about playing a guitar with perfect tone, balance, and weight. One of the ways the expert craftsmen at Gibson USA achieve this equilibrium is by carving carefully mapped-out chambers in the Les Paul’s solid mahogany back using a Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) router before the maple top is glued on. The positioning of the routes was established after careful examination of the resonant characteristics of the Les Paul. Gibson approached this process with the awareness that every change to the formula would have repercussions on the instrument’s sound. So, in addition to relieving the stress on a player’s back and shoulder, these lighter Gibson guitars also enhance the tone palette in a manner unique only to these guitars. The results are comfortable, lightweight guitars that are acoustically louder, with increased sustain and resonance.

Starting at the neck, the Les Paul Standard now features an enlarged neck tenon for maximum wood contact, and a new asymmetrical neck profile that makes it one of the most comfortable and playable necks ever offered. Locking Grover Rotomatic tuners with an improved gear ratio of 18:1 are also a first for the Les Paul Standard. A new level of sonic clarity is achieved by new, cusom-made, gold-plated potentiometers made by Bourns. The guitar boasts a great lineup of other features, including a carved AA figured maple bound top, Burstbucker Pro pickups and five great sunburst finishes.

If you can handle everything about the Gibson except the price, check this out. Engineers designed this modern classic with the arched top and fast neck of the best Les Pauls. It has an arched, figured curly Maple, carved top in faded sunburst finishes for that great LP look. And like all Les Pauls, features a solid glued neck joint for great sustain and stability. These guitars are built to 100% Gibson specifications.

It’s also one of the first Gibson USA models to utilize the revolutionary Plek system, a computer-controlled setup that carefully measures and dresses each fret, accurately measuring the height between the fingerboard and each string, virtually eliminating string buzz and providing unbeatable playability. A set of Gibson’s Burstbucker Pro humbuckers deliver the powerful punch expected from a Les Paul, faithfully capturing the magic of Gibson’s legendary PAF pickups of the 1950’s. A chambered mahogany body gives the 2008 Standard enhanced resonance, and a plain maple top pays homage to the iconic Les Pauls of the late 1950’s. Other new features include TonePros’ locking Nashville Tune-o-matic and stopbar tailpiece, strap lock buttons, and each one comes with Gibson USA’s standard black snakeskin case.

The quality of the Vintage Gibson guitars is well known and if they are in first class, original condition they are increasing in value year by year.

Gibson guitars have long been the favourite of Rock legends and regarded as the Rolls Royce of the guitar world. Today Vintage Gibson guitars are sought after not only by musicians and also by investors. The quality of the Vintage Gibson guitars is well known and if they are in first class, original condition they are increasing in value year by year.

What is not always recognized is that not all Vintage Gibsons are as valuable as people think. Your Gibson guitar may have been built between 1930 and 1970 but its condition, its history and the market that will determine the value and the price.

With that in mind I have prepared a short list of some of the more sought after models. This is by no means an extensive list but it will give you an idea in which direction to look if you are a collector of Vintage Gibson guitars.

Perhaps the most famous of all is the Gibson Les Paul and the Les Paul series of guitars.

Les Paul (standard) Model Electric Solidbody 1957-1958 Goldtop and the 1958-1960 Sunburst with Humbucking pickups.

Flying V Electric Solidbody from 1958 to 1963,

Explorer Electric Solidbody from 1958 to 1963

Gibson Thinline Semi-Hollow Electric Archtops, ES-335, ES-345, ES-355 from 1958-1960

Vintage Electric Archtop Gibson ES-150 and ES-250 from 1938 to 1940

L-00 Flattop from 1932 to 1945

L-5, L-5P, L-5C Acoustic Archtop from1922 to 1970 Cutaway models are more valuable than the Non-cutaway models.

The most collectible Gibson Archtops are the larger models made from the early 1930’s to 1959.

Advanced Jumbo Flattop from 1935 to 1940

L-5CES (cutaway) Electric Archtop from 1950’s

Gibson guitars are truly handcrafted works of art made from the finest materials as well as being marvelous instruments which are sought after the world over. The rarer models are not always the most valuable. It is condition, history and actual demand that will govern their worth.

If you are looking for a Vintage Gibson guitar, try an auction.
10 random guitar tips that will save you time and make you laugh!

1) When changing a set of strings do them one at a time. This way you will prevent taking all the tension of the neck and avoid possible warping.

2) Never practice at high volume when your mother has a screaming headache. It might result in a brief career.

3) Practicing scales will improve speed. E seems to be the easiest.

4) Take it slow; if you don’t start off slow you might get off on the wrong foot. In the long run it helps make your performance cleaner and a lot less embarrasing.

5) Follow your guitar idol never become your guitar idol. Instead of that surpass them, try to be better then them. It sounds rude and disrespectful but without progress the guitar would would cease as we know it.

6) If your a looking for a guitar but can’t play well enough to figure out which one to get, ask a friend that can play or ask the dealer if he/she can test it out for you. Ask questions, lots of questions.

7) Never ever put duct tape on your guitar. Doing so will result in at least an hour of scraping off all that goo!

Live to play together. Get yourself aqquinted with other guitarist, it doens’t matter if you aren’t very good yet just ask to jam. Stop being so shy and get yourself in front of people.

9) God put a pinky and a thumb on you for a reason and no it’s not for sucking. Using to use both will help you to reach across the fretboard for easier access. The pink can help by extending chords (Dsus4 for ex.) and your thumb can add bass lines to the chord, a la Jimi Hendrix Chords. To master your pinky practice on A minor pentatonic (You can find one, actually a couple, in August 2004 GW featuring Randy Rhoads). Remember to practice slowly.

10) Attending a concert no matter what genre or size of stadium is highly recommended. You haven’t lived if you haven’t been to a concert. Pay close attention to the guitarist, see what he/she is doing. You can be like, “Oh, I’ve never seen anything like that.” and then try to figure out how they did it.

The Vintage Original Spec series embody all the classical attributes of the Gibson guitars. The quality and craftsmanship shine out from every guitar that leaves the Gibson Custom Shop.

Vintage Original Spec series have been built for over 20 years by the dedicated and talented people in the Gibson custom workshop. Their skill and love of their work is evident in the ultimate playability and feel of what is the most cherished guitar of all time across the globe.

Gibson guitars are all about quality and attention to detail from the choicest bookmatched maple and solid mahogany to the hand linished finish. Gibson’s combine superb craftsmanship with modern technology producing fantastic looks by matching precisely the 17 original designs such as the legendary Sunburst of 1958, ‘59 and 1960, the Les Paul Standard.

Take a quick tour of the Custom Shop and see what they do…

These handcrafted guitars offer unsurpassed comfort of playing with their hand rolled binding that extends out further for increased comfort and maximum playing surface. The beautifully curved heads are set atop the long tenon necks that extend deep into the body where they are seated neatly beneath the neck pickup cavity. These long neck tenons increase the strength and in turn, the durability of Gibson guitars.

The precise fretwork and perfectly cut nuts on every guitar ensure that maximum playability is a given. Fitted with bumble bee capacitors where appropriate, correct body routing, holly head stock veneers rather than synthetic or plastic fibre, (tordis ?)dot markers on side of the neck, ABR1 bridge, light aluminium tail piece, another Gibson first.

The heart and soul of these guitars is in the tone. It all begins and ends with tone. From the growl of a single coil P90 to the rock and roll roar of the humbuckers, another Gibson innovation.

All these elements are built into every custom Vintage Original Spec guitar. They combine to make this Gibson series the most lusted afterg guitars with the most respected tone in the world.

In 1960 the Les Paul Standard still had the flame maple top, sunburst finish, and “Patent Applied For” pickups of its predecessors, but a slim taper neck was added for a decidedly different feel. These final adjustments failed to save the Standard, however, and after 1960 the single cutaway Les Paul was replaced by the thin bodied, double cutaway SG.

The Greatest Vintage Guitars Ever Made… Today

Orville Gibson made mandolins and guitars to the highest standards and the reputation he built is as good today as ever. Never one to rest on his laurels Gibson brought in many innovations during his career not least of which was the "humbucker pickup".

The founder of Gibson guitars, was born 1856 in Chateaugay, New York. His reputation grew from building mandolins to the legendary world famous company of today. Gibson led the way in innovations that are copied by many but surpassed by nobody.

The Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Mfg. Co, Ltd manufactured Gibson instruments to his own design. in Kalamazoo, Michigan until he hired Lloyd Loar in 1919 to bring in newer models. Still in production today, with modifications is the Gibson L5 guitar. The choice of bluegrass players, the Gibson F5 mandolin was introduced in 1922 and soon after Gibson gained the reputation for archtop guitars, particularly with that L-5 model.

The electric guitar came along during the 1930’s and the ES-150, the “Electric Spanish” model, was Gibson’s first offering. Wartime brought manufacturing to a standstill and it was not until 1949 that the ES-175 was introduced which is still in production today. 1951 saw the introduction of the L5CES which is both an acoustic and electric guitar.

Humbucking pickups are probably the most widely recognized innovation of Gibson’s career. Humbucker, so called because they “buck the hum” often experienced with single coil pickups, were first fitted to the reworked Gibson L5CES.

The “Les Paul” series of guitars followed during the 1050’s. The solid body design pioneered by Fender Telecaster, was made into several Les Paul models most notably perhaps the Les Paul Special. The “Byrdland” Thinline series, built for Billy Byrd and Hank Garland, gave rise to the popular ES-350T and ES-225T models then the ES-335 series.

The futuristic Explorer and Flying V came along in 1958 but were a little before their time for many musicians. It was not until the 1960’s that the likes of Eric Clapton popularized them. Meanwhile the double-cutaway body solid guitar, the Gibson’s SG, was in demand.

Since then many greats of rock have enhanced the reputations of both the Les Paul and the SGs, among them Slash, Jimmy Page and Pete Townshend to name just three. Many of these models are now sought after by discerning players and collectors alike and many increase in value year on year but if you hunt around you can still find bargains.

Gibson Flying V 1968 High Gloss Electric Guitar; Long live the V! In 1958, Gibson put forth new design ideas and the V has since been a mainstay for the company because it is loved by guitarists everywhere. Deemed futuristic when it first hit the market, this guitar has been revered in the hands of many legendary players. The guitar here is a slightly more modern take on the classic V design, but it still keeps the vintage vibe alive in the hearts of its players.

All Historic Collection Les Pauls feature a Holly Head Veneer, Long Neck Tenon and Non-Weight Relieved Bodies! Sounds awesome and plays even better. It also has a thicker neck than most but really feels right!

The SG Custom replaced the single cutaway Les Paul Custom in 1961. With three “Patent Applied For” humbuckers, gold hardware, multiple binding, and an ebony fretboard to go along with the new thinline body, the SG Custom maintained the standard of elegance set by the original Les Paul Custom.

Now part of Gibson’s proprietary new Vintage Original Spec series — the next step in their journey toward perfection.

If you occasionally hang out with your guitar then the price and weight of the Les Paul may not appeal to you. On the other hand, if you are seriously into your music and want your notes to sustain, on an instrument crafted for comfort and playability, then this is the guitar you want. An investment quality axe that you’ll love to play.

You still get the dynamic, slim mahogany body and hair-trigger quick neck that have made the SG legendary, but without all the non-essentials. The ultra-affordable price tag on this guitar is owed to fewer coats of finish than can be found on the traditional SG Standard and SG Special. This stripped-down finishing process means that not only will you enjoy more resonance but you’ll be the proud owner of an SG that looks straight out of the ’60s. The SG Special Faded is uncivilized. It’s fierce. And it’s got to

Some of the other folk I briefly rubbed shoulders with in various guises adored these too. Sadly, astonishingly, famously (and better yet infamously) glamorously and whacko-fantasaticallly, Pete Townshend smashed a few of these beauties in his time.

If you are looking for a used SG Special, they may be a little hard to find but if you ask around or try an auction even a garage sale. With luck you could pick up one of these demon machines at a reasonable price.
