Followup to Episode 126. Now we know what Second Life is, what is it you do there? Just about anything and everything, I suppose. Second Life as Social Media. Second Life as a virtual world and "actual" place, where you don't spend time killing people or critters for gold. Mostly.

Oh, it turns out Chris Kirby has a brand new album, "Wonderizer." I just got my MP3 copy from Amazon (and then Chris wanted to send me one, oh well...) and I look forward to listening to it. Might be getting a signed CD for a later giveaway, we're talkin'. ;)

Episode 126 -- Second Life : This Is Not Your Life

Leo LaPorte said on "This Week in Tech" that he abandoned Second Life because "it's all about sex." Made my jaw drop to the floor. After I picked it up, this is what I wanted to tell you about Second Life, what it's not "all about," and what it is, at least from my viewpoint.

Used a tune called "Day Job" from Chris Kirby's album "Vampire Hotel" on the show. Back when I interviewed him on The IDSL he said I could use his music on my show. He may even vaguely remember who I am. I encourage you to buy and check out the rest of the album, too -- I think the title tune from "Vampire Hotel" reminds me of almost all the clubs in Second Life where I've DJed late into the night. Except of course we take vampires a lot more seriously in Second Life. ;-)

Yes, this is my 125 episode, and as of tomorrow it'll be four years since I started. Yay. :)

I got a call for a short Temp assignment, which happens to be working for a temp agency that's working for another company that's working for our Public Radio folks. Only three degrees of separation. Wow. Sure will be nice to be working again.

Oh, and I found my lanyard for my glasses. And you should care because.... ?

Started recording from practice scripts I found at the Edge Studios website. Recorded 35, and put a couple in this podcast. What do you think? Talked about doing a demo disk, if I can make up my mind what should be on there. Eventually I'll get it.

Many different online services I'm on. Not sure why. Twitter make sense. Facebook I'm tired of, and seems pointless (especially Gangster Wars or whatever) but everyone is on Facebook, so I need to be. Friendfeed, but I'm not really there. My podcatcher (MediaMonkey), but I tend to let a lot of podcasts "age out" and I don't hear all of them. How many people are like me, downloading but not actually listening? "Long tail" downloads -- I get a lot of those. Annoying whining about Libsyn 3, and why they didn't just make it simple, if they could. "Criminalization" of cigarette smoking. The War on Drugs -- AKA the Federal Price Support Program for Illicit Pharmaceuticals.

As I may have mentioned, I'm currently in the Media Studies and Production course at Lake Superior college since August. I just today completed my second project for Video Graphics class. Came out kinda cool.

Since I can, and since I haven't done a podcast in a long while, I decided to put that video out on the feed here. Dunno if anyone will see it go by. UPDATE: I finally decided running my voice audio through Levelator wasn't cheating. I'd do it for work, why not do it for school? Glad I did. Made a real improvement, I think.

Found this on the website of someone I like and admire a lot, author Spider Robinson. Jeanne's his wife, and they're having some tough times.

Back on July 30, I ended up doing an extra-long show on BTR, because I wanted to fiddle with VAC, Virtual Audio Cable, a utility for manipulating audio inside my computer rather than using a mixer. It didn't work well enough for my purposes, but that might have been my own limited understanding.

As a result, I ended up with a bit over an hour of fairly interesting talk and pleasant music. Waste not, want not.

Had a nice long chat with Kali (aka YourGirlKali) from the "Flaws and All" show on BlogTalkRadio, and Rhonda Carpenter of the Podioracket podcast and author of "The Mark of a Druid," about podcasting, promoting podcasts, and related self-promotion.

Brief call-in from "CRC the reliever" who also has a show on BTR.

Discussed recording and swapping promos with others, leaving voice comments and blog comments. Suggested K7.net, Snapvine, or Google Voice for a voice comment line. I mentioned I'd recorded a comment line reminder for the Dawn & Drew Show which has worked out for me. Noted that podcasters are generally happy to play your promo, if you're willing to promote theirs, and happy to play any voice comments (including mention of your website) that are meaningful about their content. Mentioned producing some content for the Bloodthirsty Vegetarians podcast, with the similar results.

Oh, and I won a book on Podioracket earlier, by Brian Rathbone, called "The Dawning of Power." Another on-topic example, since the book giveaway was a promotional effort for Brian's book. (I look forward to reading that. And I like winning stuff. Thanks, Brian!)

Brought up blogging about others' podcasts with the same idea in mind.

Talked about the usefulness of Google Alerts for keeping track of what people are saying about you, good or bad. (Yahoo Alerts can serve a similar purpose.)

Discussed recording audiobooks for Podiobooks.com, and how doing those had helped promote my podcasts, and vice versa. (I have five on there now, and I'm working on my sixth.)

Is there such a thing as Too Much Promotion? Our take was that the key is to produce valuable content, make useful comments, add value to the podcasts you're appearing on or mentioned on, and that indirectly promotes your show(s) without getting too annoying. (In my humble opinion.) And if other podcasters do the same for you, they promote themselves without annoying your audience.

Rhonda presented author Seth Harwood's appearance on PodioRacket as an example on how to promote without being "excessively annoying" (Fidonet folks will recognize that phrase). I brought up singer/songwriter Natalie Brown's appearance on my show as a similar example. I also discussed playing LeVar Thomas' and City Haze's music on my show while commenting on that on Twitter.

Rhonda suggested using Ping.fm for making one post to multiple sites/accounts/outlets. That can be important when you're doing a lot of shows -- as I am, for example. And of course, producing a lot of content can help promotion in itself.

While I took a break, I played a tune from City Haze called "On My Way," featuring LeVar Thomas. (See the promotion-related tie-in, right?)

Since I use Skype for my BTR shows, I can also use a utility called Callburner to do separate mono recordings of each side of the Skype call, making it easy to edit, especially to add better-quality music to the shows. We also discussed editing for podcasting, and what Rhonda and I both use for that (as lots of podcasters do), Audacity -- free and effective for podcasting. You can spend more, if you like, of course. We're both happy with the latest Beta, 1.3.8, though technically 1.2.6 is the latest Stable version.

I suggested voice acting as another option, though that's certainly not for everybody. (There's a Yahoo Group for voice actors, by the way.)

I complained about the audio quality on BTR's archive recordings for music (though they're fine for talk, I suppose). I suggested getting a better mike. Rhonda's suggestion was a phone headset for BTR shows. I was thinking more of an inexpensive mike, and Rhonda's suggestion there was a Snowball USB mike, which can be gotten fairly cheaply.

Leo LaPorte's TWiT podcasts, since Kali lives fairly near there, and some of the local podcasting groups in the area, including the one Matthew Wayne Selznick is in.

We talked video streaming, including what Phil Rossi did for the release of his novel, "Crescent."

We also discussed recording old Public Domain books as I do, and what an all-around outstanding fellow I am at doing that. I agreed humbly. :) But I gave much of the credit to my Samson Zoom H2 Handy Recorder, which is wonderful for a guy with a bassy voice like mine, and worth every penny my sister spent for my Christmas present.

From my live BTR discussion with Martin Waxman of Palette PR and the "Inside PR" podcast. We focused on how PR techniques can be useful for Regular Folks, not just big companies, major celebrities, politicians and religious leaders; some are, for example, useful in job hunting (which I'm trying to do), and promoting podcasts (which you may have noticed I'm also trying to accomplish).

Bottom line it's about (1) building relationships with the media, and (2) your story -- determining what it is, how best to explain it to reporters et. al., and why it's news. Martin seemed to think my show having listeners in 80 countries or so (assuming I'm understanding Google Analytics) is news. He gave me some pointers for dealing with local newspaper reporters, and possibly radio. And I made some excellent points about web page SEO, newspaper writing, and press releases, doncha think?

Shel Holtz' recent helpful blogpost on that topic;
Todd Defren's design of the format;
Canada Newswire and PR Newswire, that distribute them;
being patient with reporters, especially about deadlines;
and the importance of research, followups and thinking long-term.

Part 2 of 2 of the 06/14/09 Live show.

Finally got connected to Shawno ("Hypernonsense," "Shawnogram") on Skype -- which is when all that technology when to hell... There's a whole lotta cussin' edited out of this version, believe me. And I got stuck with the BTR recording for this part, which is lower-quality than my Callburner recording had been. Sorry about that; replaced all the music with originals, though, so that sounds better.

Got very depressed with the tech failures. But part of the problem was my misunderstanding what BTR does and doesn't do. I could have fixed the call as easily as I broke it. It wasn't as broken as I thought it was.

Talked to Shawno about doing live shows on UStream, commiserating about my troubles that day. Talked about Livestream.com, which is newer with more features. Dr. Normal and Cami Kaos use that for "StrangeLove Live."

I am a very lucky guy.

I get to interview Natalie Brown, on my live show on BlogTalk Radio. The interview is supposed to be this Sunday at Noon Central. And I admit, I'm really nervous about it. This is a Big Deal.

According to Wikipedia, "Natalie Brown is a Canadian-born, contemporary R&B, pop and Blue-eyed soul singer-songwriter," active in the industry since about 2000. She's got her second album, "Random Thoughts," out now. I'm listening to her music while I type this, and she's amazing.

Watched an interview with Tina Louise, and she said "Natalie Brown is awesome!" Tina Louise! I mean, c'mon!

Now I gotta think up questions and whatnot, like interviewers do.

Remarkable, the things I do these days... ;-)

I just started a daily music show on BlogTalk Radio called "The IDSL."

For those of you who have listened to the Grizzly's Growls podcasts for a while, you'll be familiar with my "It Doesn't Suck List," which I use to pick music to play at the end of the show. What with all the fiddling I've been doing with live shows on BTR, I have not been keeping up on the IDSL, and I wanted to catch up. And then I thought, "Well, I could certainly set up a daily show on BTR to play those... hey, wait a minute!"

So I'm doing that daily show, with five selections for each show, and me trying to sound like a DJ -- doing rather well at that, actually.

Since I'm already producing the show and playing the music, and since Callburner has been behaving a bit better when I jump through enough hoops, I decided to take the Callburner audio, and modify that appropriately, replacing the BTR copies of the songs with fresh audio from the original MP3s. So I get the feel of the 30-minute live show, and any call-ins (if I get any), and the audio quality is high enough to post as a new show in the Feeds. Even created an IDSL feed on Feedburner. But...

I'm currently out of space at Libsyn! With all the new shows, I just don't have room for another show yet. After the 18th, my oldest non-archived file gets archived, and I'll start having space again. But I'm getting really impatient... maybe I can squeeze just one more in?

If y'all wanted to help out there, donations would go to (1) paying the existing Libsyn bill, (2) possibly expanding my space on Libsyn, and (3) beer, cigarettes and wild women! Probably in that order.

Probably. I am supposed to be a Minor, Local Celebrity, after all, and one must keep up appearances.

Episode 107 -- Live 06/14/09 Part 1 of 2

Part one, the first hour of last Sunday's live show. I had some technical difficulties after the first hour, but this part came out really clear, with Callburner doing the recording, and a whole bunch of editing.

Talked for a while about the swell deal I got at a nearby Rummage Sale: a Kodak Easy Share CX6200 and the original Kodak Easy Share printer dock, both in a box for $10. Cool, huh?

Music: Levar Thomas - "Ain't All Bad" and "Ain't All Bad Radio Mix." Really like this tune, and it's got a really positive message. I liked the way the two versions worked together, so I ended up editing them into one, long piece. Hope he doesn't mind. Thanks, Levar!

Tried to talk to Jen from "Inside My Head" on the show, but couldn't get the audio on her end to work correctly.

This whole process, not Jen's fault, was what produced the escalating chaos later in the show. Sometimes I think doing a call-in show is a mistake, once I got good on the regular podcast. But if you don't challenge yourself, you never learn anything.

Announced the last episode of "Flatland" is up on Podiobooks.com -- and it's also out there at the end of the Hiber-Nation feed, too, awaiting you.

Finally got connected with Jen (aka "Queen of Haiku" on Twitter). She had some nice things to say about Levar's music (and I kept obsessing about the technical stuff). Got to play with my new Rejoiner for the show, too. (Still having problems understanding her on the Click to Talk connection; had a horrible AC hum, which I edited out For Your Listening Pleasure.)

Talked a bit about Jen & Shawno having their experimented with live shows for their "Hypernonsense" podcast, the one they do together.

Discussed the upcoming interview with Natalie Brown this coming Sunday.

I've come to the conclusion I start having problems when I start getting call-ins. Which is a bad sign for doing a call-in show, now ain't it?

Discussed Jen's experiences (she's a teacher) with Swine Flu, or not Swine Flu. I get all Scientific-sounding. Talked about "ReGenesis," this show I watch(ed) on Hulu. Wonder if it's still being produced? And did they jump the shark? And talked about "Castle," with Nathan Fillion starring. Looking forward to that being on Hulu, too!

AND THEN I foolishly took a moment to play some music & get more coffee, and broke stuff again...

Discussed Eareverence's upcoming show on BTR

Meredith from Braindouche! finally got to call in, and we talked briefly, but then we ran out of Streaming time. We talked a bit more in the After Hours segment you'll hear on Friday.

I've come to the conclusion I don't do well with too many people on the show at once. I think a new rule will be only one caller on live at a time, unless there's a compelling reason to talk to a particular group all together. The big PR show was an example of a "compelling reason." They were all invited guests, and all PR podcasters, talking about PR and podcasting.

Naturally, if I have an Invited Guest, that means one Caller at a time with a question for the Guest. Or maybe none, if that's what's comfortable for me.

Make sense?

For you longtime listeners to the regular show, I hope at least the new format hasn't been too disruptive for you. I hope I'm learning and getting better at doing a live show. And you're welcome to call in on Sunday and become part of the show yourself.

I like to watch NASCAR racing, but I only understand parts of it. Up till the late 1990's, NASCAR had a rule, when there was an accident and the yellow flag went out, crashed cars on the track, busted tires & car parts & smoke & flames everywhere, the cars were supposed to "race to the line," dodging alla that junk on the track, to have a good position when the race restarted.

A few years back, they made a new rule. The officials would decide in what order people would line up under the yellow, and no one would race to the line. But one guy would get moved up to the very tail end of the lead lap. "The Lucky Dog."

I started listening to podcasts in 2006. I listened to practically every podcast I could find. I started thinking, "I could do that!" So I started my own podcast, in February 2007.

Joe Murphy died of leiomyosarcoma on April 1st, 2007. I honestly don't know if I ever heard the podcasts Joe was on, but I have this vague memory I just might have. I listened to lots of podcasts. Or, honestly, I might not. I didn't get the chance to meet him.

But the folks who went ahead of me, folks I've come to like, admire, and trust, liked, admired, and trusted Joe. He's one of those who made this community what it is. He's worth remembering.

Podcasting isn't about the microphones, the computers, the software, the talk, the music, the time, or the money. It's about the people. And a whole lot of people took a chance on trying this new podcasting stuff, and even regular guys like Joe got a chance to speak. Even a regular guy like me.

I got to tag along on the tail end of the lead lap. I'm the Lucky Dog.

So yeah, I remember Joe. Even so.

But listen to them other folks. They tell it better.

Just thought I'd let you know, at the end of the month, my reading of "Wild Animals I Have Known" by Ernest Thompson Seton will be available on Podiobooks.com. Yes, I know, I'm jumping the gun a bit. But (a) I'm proud of how the audiobook turned out, and (b) I'm rather proud of how the promo turned out, too. So I wanted to share that with you now.

The official release date on Podiobooks.com will be 3/31/2009 -- which happens to be my Mom's birthday. Being unemployed (along with the rest of the world), I'll be hard put to buy anything for her, but this, I can do. Heck, she likes audio books. "Look Mommie, I made it myself -- and didn't use any macaroni or glue!"

Forgot to mention, I now have "A Handy Guide for Beggars," by Vachel Lindsay, available on Podiobooks.com. I went back through all those files I'd recorded for Hiber-Nation, and did the necessary editing to fit them to the Podiobooks standards. So no, they don't sound any better than they did, but you can use the Personalized Feed mechanism to get the book sent episode-by-episode from beginning to end.

So if you liked the book, you could recommend the Podiobooks feed to your friends. For example. I'm just sayin'.

Episode 86 -- Duluth! Revisited! Again!

Back in Episode 56, I did that J Proctor Knott speech that in 1871 made Duluth one of the best-known cities in the country -- for a little while, anyway. I really liked the way the speech turned out, mostly.

But I didn't like the way that show turned out. Didn't like the music,didn't like the audio quality, the flaws kept picking at me. So tonight I opened up Episode 56, re-edited it and cleaned it up a bit. And here it is. I liked it enough that I thought it worthwhile to get it as good as possible.

Still not perfect, but a lot better, I think. If you missed it the first time, or even if not, I hope you like this version.

Thanks for your patience with my perfectionism.

When I uploaded Episode 69 this morning, I used the wrong filename, and managed to overwrite Epsode 68. And of course, I'd neglected to archive a copy of that episode on my laptop here, so I have nothing from which to recover it.

Anybody still got a copy of grizz068.mp3, the last show from September? The file on the website right now is the one overwritten by grizz069.mp3. If you've got a copy, I'd appreciate getting it back.

By the way, if you're a Garageband artist that's going to be on an upcoming show, it wouldn't be impossible to set up a live show on Stickam, and do an on-the-fly (more or less) interview regarding your music. But maybe that's just me; I gather publicity is a good thing.

If you want more people to know about you and your music, make sure I know that, and I'll set up a feed, assuming I can figure out all the different software I have to use. Hey, I'm a stranger here myself!

A PSA from Nobilis, about feedback on podcasts. A little pathetic whining by me in agreement. Seth Harwood's visit. Mentioned the "Aspie Quiz," which come to think of it, I -didn't- mention on the last show.

Part 2 -- Amazing Times

Talk about many, many downloads (194 so far!!), and hitting the top of Society podcasts at Podcast Pickle -- which lasted a day.

Turns out the NPR Show, "Talk of the Nation," the only more popular show in the genre, is a two hour show. And they podcast the first and second hours as separate episodes. So they get twice as many downloads per actual show they do. Hard to compete on the math alone.

I just found out there's a way to have two separate feeds without creating a whole 'nother feed via a separate blog. Turns out I was already creating a separate feed, I just didn't know it. It's a Libsyn feature. Go figure.

So, I changed the Feedburner feed around a bit. The usual, http://feeds.feedburner.com/grizzlysgrowls has the usual feed except for the story episodes. http://feeds.feedburner.com/grizzlysgrowlsstory (note the double S) has only those story episodes.

All posts in both categories will show up on the Website as usual.

So, as it turns out, I will not be using Changeling Turkey for stories. For what, I dunno, but not for that.

Hope this doesn't confuse things even further....

I ran into someone at the Androy the other day who'd apparently heard the last story, and thought "You'd be great with kids." I think I'd be terrible with kids, not that I wouldn't try hard. I'm much more comfortable with microphones & computers & such.

Because at the end of the show, I explained the answers to every question you have ever asked or will ever ask, but now you missed it, so you're doomed to live in a miasma of confusion and self-doubt.

Okay, here's the deal. Did this show with my friend, Boo, a young lady I've mentioned previously. Three things to note:

We spent some time discussing Curse Words, in detail and specifically. If you're offended by "foul language," you might want to skip this one.

You'll note that I was rambling and incoherent. Probably a Stress thing, possibly an Asperger thing, perhaps an Us thing, but definitely a Me thing. Doing new stuff kinda removed the comfort level I've
achieved with the show. Perhaps that's also a Good thing.

Third thing. I wanted to show her what I do, and what it's like. I think she enjoyed herself. What's next for me and for us? Well, she said she may do it again sometime. We'll see. She may also start her own, and if she wants to (you listening, Boo?) I'll help her out. She can obviously speak for herself. We didn't and don't always agree on what's appropriate. But it was still kinda cool. Anyway, comments are encouraged. Thanks for listening.

IT'S A SNOW DAY! YAY! NOT MUCH OF A SNOW DAY, GRANTED, SINCE IT'S SUNDAY AND NOT A SCHOOL DAY. BUT IT'LL JUST HAVE TO DO. AS A KID, I USED TO LOVE SNOW DAYS. LISTENING TO KDAL ON THE AM RADIO IN THE MORNING WITH THE LATEST WEATHER FORECASTS AND SCHOOL CLOSINGS, HOPING MINE WAS NEXT ON THE LIST. STAYING HOME, CAN'T GO TO SCHOOL BECAUSE THE SCHOOL BUSES AREN'T RUNNING. AND IF WE GOT TO SCHOOL, WE MIGHT NOT MAKE IT HOME. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY, RIGHT MOM?
