If there is one movie that I am most curious about this summer, it’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. I’ll admit, I never read the book and was a little naïve about it. At first I honestly thought the story was going to be in the vein of Zombieland and a little tongue in cheek. Then I saw the trailer and was a little shocked at how serious it took itself. But I’m intrigued by it and now a little bit more so with this just released red band trailer. It’s a bloody good time.

Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach have created some unforgettable movies (The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Fantastic Mr. Fox) together and will do so again for Squirrels to The Nuts, which reunites long-time Anderson film players as well. More on that in a minute. However, this time Anderson and Baumbach will produce this comedy for writer/director Peter Bogdanovich, which added some top tier talent led by two of the three train-traveling brothers from The Darjeeling Limited

Ten years ago Sony Pictures had a broken franchise on their hands. Sure they probably eked out a small profit on that sequel, but the backlash from critics and audiences had told them that Men in Black was just a one trick pony. The funny thing about time, though, is that it clouds our memories. So some rising star in the Sony universe must have noticed all the re-booting that every studio was giving to their own tent-pole franchises and thought it might be a great idea for this one too. I bet they also asked for a huge promotion, the corner office, and a hot secretary. So off they went into the company vault and pulled out the dust collecting creation. Of course, this particular franchise had a few faces that needed to sign up otherwise, after all, what would Men in Black 3 be without Will Smith’s Agent J and Tommy Lee Jones’ Agent K?

The funny thing is getting those two back seemed to have been the easy part. There was the issue with a script that no one could agree on. It was reported that filming began with a bare minimum of screenplay and production was shut down for a while until someone could make sense of the storyline. With so much riding on this film, it’s no wonder that Sony didn’t employ a team of witch-doctors to fix it. Instead they hired Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder) to serve as the proverbial script-doctor. After seeing the film I would say that he succeeded in keeping the story true to the franchise and outside some sappiness at the end, stuck to the same winning formula of the first film.

This is the weekend where the reigning champion will finally be dethroned by a campy second sequel. Last week was the last time The Avengers placed first as it will be slightly pushed back to second place when MIB3 is released to the world. Honestly, who asked for a sequel to MIB and who wanted MIB2 and MIB3? I’m aware that Will Smith asked for them but c’mon, this has become a long running joke. Well, the man does make studios money as one of the most profitable stars in Hollywood.

After writing three or four posts about what Hellboy and Pan's Labryinth director Guillermo del Toro plans to do sometime in the future, I finally get to talk about something that we know for sure will be happening. Del Toro's next film is Pacific Rim, and we've known next to nothing about until a plot synopsis was released today, via Slashfilm. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn't what we're getting.

Let me start by saying my man crush on Gary Oldman knows no bounds. He's awesome and has held too many memorable roles to count. I can't wait to see his latest turn in The Dark Knight Rises, though even more exciting than his return as Batman's amigo Jim Gordon was word last night that he'll join the RoboCop remake. But he's not joining the film to play the main villain Clarence Boddicker which is such a downer given his acting prowess.

July 20th so close yet so far away! You probably know I'm talking about when The Dark Knight Rises finally comes to theaters likely shattering box-office opening weekend records similar to what The Avengers just did. Those numbers will benefit from the recent flurry of awesome promos (posters, pics & trailers) that have left a mostly positive impression on moviegoers like me.

Sony Grabs Ethan Hawke Time-Travel Thriller ‘Predestination’

To many people, the Cannes Film Festival is nothing more than an international party of celebrities flaunting their tans, films, yachts, etc. Yes, they watch movies and judge movies, but the names of which usually evaporate from the public’s minds fairly quickly as they’re more intrigued by the newest summer blockbuster to be released in the next few days. Speaking of potential blockbusters, Variety reported today that Sony Pictures just acquired the rights to Predestination. A futuristic time travel thriller starring Ethan Hawke.

'G.I.Joe: Retaliation' Release Bumped to 2013 by 3D

No retaliation for the Joes this year...

Sad news in movie world today, or a blessing in disguise to Paramount. Deadline reports G.I. Joe Retaliation has been removed from the summer movie schedule (June 29) and bumped to March, 2013. Why you ask? So the studio can post-convert the sequel to 3D, which will take nine months (just like making a baby) providing them with a larger box-office return. Makes sense, though I'm a little bummed as I kind of wanted to see The Rock, Bruce Willis and Snake Eyes team up to pound some Cobra in a new and improved G.I. Joe movie.

I remember walking into The Proposition, John Hillcoat’s first collaboration with screenwriter/impossibly awesome musician Nick Cave, and thinking that I was just going to see a movie that soon after, I would instantly forget about. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Why did I think that? Nick Cave was the wild card. As much as I love his music, I was skeptical about his screenwriting abilities. But now, I will go to anything his name is attached to. Which leads us to these two clips from Lawless, or the Tom Hardy is a badass showcase.
