			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Cognitive impairment is just a fancy way of saying that your thought processes and ability to dissimilate information is hampered in some way. People with multiple sclerosis (MS) sometimes suffer from some type of cognitive impairment. Cognition incorporates everything from remembering information to solving math problems to paying attention to details to even using the spoken word.</p>
<p>MS occurs when the nerve sheath called myelin becomes damaged and forms lesions. These lesions hamper the normal nerve impulses from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of your body. As many people know, the brain is just one big mess of electrical nerve impulses sending signals throughout the body. Accidents, Alzheimer&#039;s disease and stroke can all impair cognitive abilities and MS is right there along with them.</p>
<p>Cognitive Impairments Commonplace?</p>
<p>About half of the people with MS have some sort of cognitive issue; however, many times it is mild such as not being able to concentrate on every day tasks in distracting situations or forgetting what to buy at the store. Luckily there are easy tips to handle these mini brain fogs and compensate. There are some MS patients who have sufficient cognitive impairment to have to stop driving or quit work.</p>
<p>MRI scans can show where lesions are in the brain which could give you a clue as to why you might experience some cognitive impairment with MS. These MRI scans also indicate that the location of lesions in certain parts of the brain could be also be a factor in cognitive issues. There are neuropsychological examinations which can definitively measure the level of cognitive impairment.</p>
<p>These cognitive issues are not always a forgone conclusion in MS sufferers. Not everyone will experience debilitating impairment. Plus, the level of physical MS symptoms is not indicative of cognitive problems either. Someone with MS who is physically impaired may be free of any debilitating cognitive impairment while seemingly normal looking MS patients with no untoward physical symptoms may have definite cognitive impairment. There is really no rhyme or reason to it all.</p>
<p>Tools to Help</p>
<p>Those with some impairment cognitively speaking do cope with a number of different tips and tools to see them through these particular times. For example, a digital recorder might be helpful for recording thoughts and reminders as they come to you for later reference. PDAs, calendars, to-do lists, and even post-it notes are all tools that are often used to compensate. Programming your computer or cell phone to pop up reminders is another excellent way to stay on top of things.</p>
<p>Exercising your brain is also helpful to keep that gray matter limber as well as firing new neural pathways as well. Playing cards, doing crossword puzzles or Sudoku and reading are other great pastimes that can keep your mind sharp as possible.</p>
<p>While there is no medication directed specifically at cognitive impairment for MS patients, there are several promising clinical trials that hold out hope for the future. In addition, the medications like interferon therapy that are used to slow the progress of the disease also helps slow down the progress of debilitating cognitive impairment.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The old playground adage that you do not hit a child with glasses has somehow trickled down into the parenting philosophy of many a couple who have a child with a birth defect. Quite obviously there will have to be different benchmarks set when thinking of disciplining a child with an organic or external birth defect, especially if this condition in any way affects the emotional, psychological, cognitive or physical maturity of the child. This calls for an extra dose of tolerance, good humor, willingness to work around limitations, and a flexibility that may not be found in families of children who do not deal with the effects of physical abnormalities.</p>
<p>On the other side of the coin is the lack of attention that is paid to this most basic childhood requirement: the need for healthy boundaries that are consistently and lovingly enforced. Disciplining a child with birth defects is just as important as enforcing the set limits and standards with a healthy child. Where parents routinely err is the failure to adjust the limits and boundaries instead of the discipline that is meted out.</p>
<p>The goal of normalcy is expressed in the home and treating a child with birth defects differently by allowing her or him to not experience consequences of her or his actions is contrary to good and common sense. There will be times that your child will exhibit behavior that is unacceptable and cannot be excused or traced back to the birth defect. A child with club foot, for example, may not be able to respond to your instructions as quickly as a more able bodied child and thus should not be warned about tardiness, but by the same token she or he should be sternly warned against hitting or acting out physically against another sibling. This behavior is not acceptable and is most certainly not caused by the birth defect.</p>
<p>Psychologists have traced back parental unwillingness to discipline a child with birth defects to underlying feelings of guilt, especially if the birth defect may be attributed to external sources such as parental behavior or environmental factors. By the same token, parents of children with abnormalities will seek to instinctually want to protect their little ones from any and all adversity, rationalizing that the harshness of every day life will be something their child will have to deal with sooner rather than later as it is. Yet by failing to help the child discern acceptable from unacceptable behavior and thus not enabling the child to practice fitting into the society of which she or he will become a part sooner or later, the very harshness they are seeking to prevent will undoubtedly strike the child harder than necessary. A child with a birth defect will need to cope with rude children, inept teachers, and rude adults, but a child with a birth defect and bad manners or aggressive behavior, a potty mouth, or a volatile temper will find that children as well as adults will be less likely to invite her or him into their circle and permit the child to assimilate into the group.</p>

<p>At birth baby teeth are already forming under the gums. It is important to keep your baby&#039;s mouth clean even before that first tooth erupts. Clean your baby&#039;s gums with a soft cloth and clean water, twice a day. You should see that first tooth by 6 months of age. Do not let your baby go to bed with a bottle, if you absolutely must give your baby a bedtime bottle use only water. If you breastfeed, afterwards use a damp cloth to wipe your baby&#039;s gums.</p>
<p>7 - 12 months</p>
<p>Around 7 to 9 months the incisors are already breaking through the gums and your baby&#039;s permanent teeth are starting to form under the gum.</p>
<p>13 : 24 months</p>
<p>At this time you can schedule your baby&#039;s first dental visit. The visit will basically be to allow your baby to get familiar with the environment, for the dentist to look inside your baby&#039;s mouth to be sure all is normal and for you to be able to ask any questions you may have about your baby&#039;s dental health. Around this time is when most start to brush their baby&#039;s first teeth. You can use a soft nylon toothbrush; some stores even sell toothbrushes made especially for babies. Use fluoridated toothpaste, but just a dab (no bigger than a piece of rice or one small pea). Brush them at least twice a day. Replace the toothbrush once every 3 months or when it looks worn or frayed looking. It is not a good idea to sweeten a pacifier with honey or sugar. Offer healthy snacks instead of sugary snacks.</p>
<p>2 : 5 years</p>
<p>At this age your child is ready to start brushing his teeth, but you still need to do some of the brushing for him to be sure that all of the teeth are being brushed. It is still a good idea to use a toothbrush with soft nylon bristles and a dab of fluoridated toothpaste. You should floss your child&#039;s teeth where any two of them touch. It is important to be setting a good example in front of your child, by brushing and flossing regularly and seeing a dentist twice a year. Encourage your child to eat healthy snacks instead of sugary ones. Make an appointment for cleanings and exams with the child&#039;s dentist every 6 months. By age 5 your child&#039;s front primary teeth roots will start to dissolve and then they will soon loose their first tooth. The baby (primary) teeth fall out to make room for the permanent teeth.</p>
<p>6 : 7 years</p>
<p>The first permanent teeth will erupt around age 6. The first to erupt are either the front lower teeth or the 6 year molars. Around this time your child will want to start brushing his teeth by himself. This is fine as long as you remind him to brush the back teeth and the back of his teeth. You can make a game of checking his teeth afterwards for hidden pieces of dinner or something silly like that. Make sure you are brushing your child&#039;s tongue lightly to remove any bacteria. Continue to set a good example for your child regarding good dental hygiene habits. Make sure to provide healthy snacks.</p>

<p>Your child will be able to floss his own teeth by age 9, just be sure to monitor the brushing and flossing just to keep him on his toes about proper technique. Keep up your good examples and remember to provide healthy snacks.</p>
<p>11 : 12 years</p>
<p>Talk with your child about the consequences of poor dental hygiene. Encourage your child to eat healthy snacks. Remember to make cleaning and exam appointments every 6 months for yourself and your child. The last of the primary teeth will fall out and your child will soon have all of his permanent teeth.</p>
<p>13 : 15 years</p>
<p>Remind your teen of the reasons for good dental health habits. Discuss with your teen the dangers of smoking and non-smoke products that leave stains. Discuss the dangers of tobacco products and oral cancer. Permanent teeth are almost finished moving into their final positions and the wisdom teeth will be erupting soon. Sometimes there is not enough room for the wisdom teeth and they will remain under the gums. Ask your dentist for information about wisdom teeth. Don&#039;t buy junk food. Keep healthy fruits and vegetables around for you and your teen. Buy plenty of oral health care supplies and keep them handy for the teen to grab and use.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Meditation has been practiced for centuries. In the years that followed, various movements have evolved and one of them is called transcendental meditation.</p>
<p>Transcendental meditation was a movement founded in 1957 by a Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Today, it has over 6 million followers and some of them include Hollywood celebrities and singers.</p>
<p>The organization that practices Transcendental Meditation is better known as the Spiritual Regeneration Movement. What makes this form of meditation different from the others is the fact that you don&#039;t just learn everything there is to know by reading a book but by learning from a transcendental meditation expert.</p>
<p>The ultimate goal of Transcendental Meditation is to make each member achieve pure consciousness. By doing so, the individual will be able to find peace with him or herself and also with the rest of the world.</p>
<p>The practice of transcendental meditation takes about 15 to 20 minutes each day. In order to be part of this organization, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi created a seven step process which everyone must go through that also includes two lectures, a personal interview with a trained instructor and four days of practice. Apart from that, you are required to pay a signup fee that is almost $2,500.</p>
<p>More than 500 clinical studies have been done on Transcendental Meditation. One study shows that members who are in their 50&#039;s feel much younger. Another study shows that it improves your academic achievement, creativity and intelligence.</p>
<p>Those who have been practicing it claim that it reduces problems such as anxiety, insomnia and stress. Even those who have had addictions with alcohol or drugs in the past say that this has helped them kick the habit.</p>
<p>In short, Transcendental Meditation is able to improve your physical health. Probably the biggest surprise is that one study showed that members of this movement have had fewer medical problems than those who are not.</p>
<p>Given the benefits it can do to those who practice it, this is probably the reason why some companies in the US offer this program to their employees. This is because management knows that stress costs them more than 200 billion dollars annually which means a decrease in the worker&#039;s productivity.</p>
<p>One example of such a company that offers this to their employees is General Motors. This car company has been practicing Transcendental Meditation for several years and results from a study showed that this increased the productivity in the workplace, improved morale and had a good impact on the physical health of their workers.</p>
<p>There are even some who have mistaken Transcendental Meditation and the organization itself to be part of the religious cult. This is because another name by which it is known is the &#034;Science of Creative Intelligence&#034; which in fact is a degree that you can get after you graduate at the Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa.</p>
<p>It should also be pointed out that Transcendental Meditation is scientific so you don&#039;t have to abandon your current religion. In fact, it can be done with little effort so it is possible for you to achieve pure consciousness regardless of your age, gender, educational background, culture or religion.</p>
<p>Transcendental Meditation makes you look inward so you are able to turn those dormant potentials into realities. Of course, this can only happen over time and with practice so you will soon be able to experience an endless world of possibilities.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Do you ever feel like just shutting a door on a messy bedroom, walking out of a cluttered living room, or tempted to hide in your room?  Most parents have dealt with those feelings many times while raising children. You can find some creative ways to help your child learn to put toys away when done playing.</p>
<p>Have you heard the little song about cleaning up?  My grandchildren immediately go into &#034;clean-up&#034; mode when I ask them to pick up their toys. Singing with them and even helping pick up a few toys has been helpful in getting toys picked up before they go home. They know where their shoes and coats belong when they visit and are easy to find when it is time to leave.</p>
<p>With older children you may have to be a little more innovative to get their cooperation in keeping clutter out of your living space. Your child may come in from school, take off their backpack, drop it in the hall, take their shoes off at the door of the living room, and put their school papers on the kitchen table. You can ask them to pick up their belongings and put them away but many times your child or teen is so engrossed in what they are doing now it doesn&#039;t get done. They may make promises to pick up belongings when a commercial comes on or when they reach a place in their game they can pause it.<br />
Are threats and repeated requests not working?  Let an innovative mother&#039;s solution help you with your clutter!</p>
<p>Asking repeatedly for her children to pick up their belongings didn&#039;t work, threatening didn&#039;t work either, in fact, and nothing seemed to work for this mother. One evening after her children went to bed she looked at the clutter on the family room floor and hit on a brilliant idea. She picked up all the belongings and put them in a big box, which she then placed in her own room. The next morning everyone began looking for his or her backpacks, homework, and shoes. Handing each of her three children a list she explained to them the items were in the &#034;impound&#034; box and could be redeemed by doing household chores, or paying a small fine to get their items back. Of course, redeeming their possessions hit them where it hurt!  This mother found a unique way to keep her home free of clutter!</p>
<p>There are other ways of keeping your home clutter free when you have children. Provide a basket to put shoes in when they come into the house. Place a coatrack or hooks where your child can hang their coats and backpacks when they come home from school. You will want to be sure the hooks are low enough for your youngest child to reach. If you make a practice of hanging up coats, putting shoes in a basket, or putting backpacks in a special place you will find clutter reduced!</p>
<p>In parenting, you need to learn to adapt as your children grow. When your child becomes a teenager you may want to choose which battles to fight. You will find that a teenager will want to do battle over small items. Don&#039;t win the battle but lose the war. Pick which problem you want to stick to your guns on and let little things go. You may want to compromise with your teen, ask them to keep their clutter confined to their room and just shut the door!  It worked for me!</p>

When you eat during meals the food does not stay on your teeth as long as when you eat in between meals. So if you have to have a sweet, it is better to have it with your meal than in between meals. Most people brush only after meals. Since it only takes about 20 minutes for plague to start forming on your teeth and to begin to damage enamel if you eat between meals and do not brush until after the next meal a lot of time will have passed from the time you eat your snack to the time you next brush your teeth.</p>
<p>All carbohydrates break down into simple sugars and the process starts in your mouth. Bacteria on your teeth that live in your mouth use the sugars from these foods to produce acids. It is these acids that can cause tooth decay. The longer the food remains on the teeth, the more acid is produced. Removing the food particles takes the simple sugars out of the acid equation. People who drink sweetened coffee or other sugary beverages throughout the day keep a steady supply of sugar on their teeth for the bacteria to cling to.</p>
<p>Certain foods help to increase the amount of saliva in your mouth and saliva helps to wash away bacteria. Some food like aged cheese helps to buffer the acid and this helps to prevent cavities if eaten at the end of a meal. Your mouth depends on good nutrition to stay healthy.</p>
<p>For overall good health for your body and your mouth it is important to follow the guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services, which basically says:</p>
<p>Eat whole grains daily, such as brown rice, oatmeal and whole wheat bread instead of refined grains, such as white bread and white rice.</p>
<p>Eat healthier vegetables, including dark green and orange vegetables.</p>
<p>Eat a variety of fruits.</p>
<p>Choose a diet with plenty of grain products, fruits and vegetables.</p>
<p>Choose fish, beans, nuts and seeds for some of your protein needs.</p>
<p>Choose beverages and foods to moderate your intake of sugars.</p>
<p>Choose and prepare foods with less salt.</p>
<p>If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation.</p>
<p>Aim for a healthy weight and be physically active each day.</p>
<p>There is a new interactive guide that the USDA has devised to help people understand these guidelines that can be found at www.mypyramid.gov.</p>
<p>These guidelines when followed will keep your body healthy which in turn helps to keep your mouth healthy. It is important to remember these guidelines and to choose your food carefully. Watch out for eating between meals and if you do so, please remember to chew sugarless gum or to rinse your mouth with water to help remove some of the food particles and sugar. The connection between the food that you eat and the health of your teeth and gums is amazingly close. You need healthy teeth to enjoy food and you need healthy food choices to protect your teeth.</p>

<p>* Do not practice adventure sports when you are going for a holiday during your pregnancy. Avoid scuba diving at any cost. Spend your hoi day time resting peacefully, lying back. Enjoy the nature&#039;s beauty and get indulged much more in yourself and your baby than the outside world.</p>
<p>Traveling should be avoided for the first three months of pregnancy as this is a very delicate period. The risk of miscarriage is higher during this time. Traveling by air also poses some risks due to the changes in the air pressure, resulting into the damage of the uterus membranes. Before traveling by air, the expected mother must dress up comfortably; carry the required medicines and food needed during the travel.</p>
<p>Similarly, traveling by car is also not harmful, but must be avoided for the first three months. As the lady is not used to pregnancy, and so she gets fatigue and tired easily. For long journey, take frequent intervals and wear the safety belts for your safety. Carry the required snacks for preventing the feelings of nausea and also a pillow for relaxing comfortably.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As if it were not hard enough to deal with the reality of a child affected by birth defects, if you have other children, you will need to spend some time coming to grips with their feelings and needs as well. No matter how severe the birth defect, or whether it is a systemic abnormality affecting the organs or a clearly visible deformity, the odds are high that the other children in the family will need to learn to deal with it to some extent. While you may be tempted to let others deal with the healthy siblings or perhaps feel that they need to learn to deal with their problems relating to the health issues of their sibling, do not give in to this way of thinking!</p>
<p>Instead, remember that birth defects and the healthy sibling will be largely responsible for the way your affected child learns to deal with the reality of the abnormality. In some cases you could even say that a child affected with a birth defect learns to see her- or himself and self worth through the eyes of the siblings in the household. Here are some points to consider:</p>
<p>* Children deal with problematic situations differently. One of your children may be verbal, while another may choose to express fears and frustrations via drawings or even music. Relate to each of your child on their individual level and do not expect or require a common form of communication when it comes to their innermost thoughts.</p>
<p>* In some cases the healthy siblings may experience guilt over the other child&#039;s birth defect, especially if at some point during your pregnancy they were less than enthusiastic about welcoming a little brother or sister into their home. The healthy siblings may experience misplaced feelings of being responsible for the child&#039;s birth defect and may actually believe that it could have been avoided had they had a better way of thinking. If not dealt with immediately, concisely, and definitively, your healthy sibling may try to run away, hurt her- or himself, or do something else equally drastic to even the scales - in their minds.</p>
<p>* When older siblings experience the cruelty of other children directed at their affected brother or sister, it is time to teach them about the emotional and behavioral smallness of some people and how to best deal with it. This may also open the door for the admission of some personal smallness on their parts which can further a good discussion on how to deal with their sibling&#039;s birth defect.</p>
<p>* If the birth defect is so severe that death is a possibility, it is wise to prepare the healthy siblings in advance. Never guarantee death, but also do not guarantee healing. There is nothing wrong with saying that you do not know what will happen, that you hope and pray for the best, but that if worse comes to worst, there is an explanation about what will happen. Reassure the healthy siblings and be prepared to deal with their fears and thoughts about death.</p>
