I remember watching Revenge of The Creature on TV’s Creature Features back in the 60s and 70s with my kid brothers and sisters. It’s the second film in the three-part Creature From the Black Lagoon series.

Although not as good as 1954′s Creature From the Black Lagoon, this 1955 sequel is still a solid horror classic. I’m surprised there haven’t been any remakes, yet…. More on that in a minute.

Revenge of The Creature focuses on a second scientific expedition to the Amazon in search of the “Gill Man,” who was leading a pretty happy aquatic existence until civilization visits his neck of the swamps.

Being scientific types, the expedition’s team uses a highly-technical, scientific-type method to capture the hapless Creature. They throw sticks of dynamite into the lagoon, killing God-knows-how-many fish and knocking out the Gill Man.

He’s transported to a Florida Oceanographic Institute and when he wakes up, he’s understandably pissed off and goes on a killing rampage.

The Creature is eventually subdued, chained, trained, falls in love, gets jealous, escapes, kidnaps a girl, kills some more people, gets cornered, shot, and … well, you’ll see .

Revenge of The Creature stars popular actors John Agar (Tarantula, The Mole People, The Brain from Planet Arous, Flesh and the Spur, Hand of Death, Sands of Iwo Jima, and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon) and Lori Nelson.

If you look quickly – and I mean quickly, you’ll catch a very young Clint Eastwood. (Hint, Clint’s the guy with the rodent in his pocket.)

The only version of Revenge of the Creature I could find online is from a 1997 episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 – a great show, but the movie deserves a little better.

REMAKE IN  THE WORKS: Good news and bad news here.

Two “remakes” of The Creature From the Black Lagoon are supposedly in the works.

First the bad news: Universal Studios is remaking The Creature From the Black Lagoon as a MUSICAL in July of 2009!

Now the good news: Another remake of the movie is going through rewrites and pre-production.

Holy Wienerschnitzel! A Florida church is in hot water over a how-to-have-great-sex seminar it’s conducting while the clothing-conscious Swiss are trying to prevent happy German tourists hiking in the buff.

According to Florida Today, The New Hope Church in Melbourne is holding an ongoing seminar called ”Great Sex for You.”

Over 20,000 fliers were mailed to local households, asking “Is Your Sex Life A Bore?” and inviting them to  ”learn how to have the Great Sex that God created you to enjoy!”

So what’s the big deal?

Well, it seems the church is holding the sex seminars in an elementary school auditorium and the school board is pissed, calling the whole thing “obnoxious.”

“We believe the type of advertising used is not appropriate for students to read in any elementary school,” says Mark Langdorf, the school district’s director of risk management. “If it is inappropriate for the students, then it should not be used to advertise any event held at an elementary school in Brevard County.”

Hold on there, says the church’s Pastor, Bruce Cadle:

“Sex between married believers is a holy activity. It’s not a dirty activity. It’s not a shameful activity,” Cadle preached. “It’s a holy activity. And the Bible is so clear about this. But it’s still hard for us to get it.”

The school board is reviewing the church’s lease.

Meanwhile, the Swiss have their knickers in a twist about German tourists strolling around the countryside without their lederhosen.

Known to the Swiss as “boot-only hikers,” scores of naked naturalists have been hiking their heinies off up and down the Alps because there was no law against it.

One Germany-based website says,  ”abandoning unpractical clothes enables a direct contact with the wind, sun and temperature.”

Umm.. OK.

Finally fed up with encountering free-roaming winkies, one Swiss hamlet has taken matters in hand, so to speak, voting last Sunday to ban naked hiking.

From now on, anyone caught hiking au natural will be fined 200 francs (about $160) for baring their bratwurst in public.

After being chased by a bear and hit by a car, a  pregnant Colorado woman  said she would honor the euthanized animal by giving her baby the middle name “Bear.”

Ashley Swendsen, 26,  Swendsen said she first spotted the bear as it was coming out of a creek.

“I didn’t know what to do, so I just kept walking,” she said. She started running when the bear moved toward her. As she ran, she thought, “If it was going to hurt me, it already would have.”

Swendsen climbed up an embankment and was crossing the street when she was hit by a car. She wasn’t seriously injured, but authorities took her to a hospital as a precaution because she was pregnant.

Local police are looking for the car that hit Swendsen. The driver stopped, talked to her and took off.

The bear was caught, tranquilized and killed. Swendsen said she was sad to hear about the bear’s death, saying it had “spared me, and then it had to die.”

So what does this have to do with an atheist????

Ms. Swendsen’s belief that the bear “spared” her reminds me of a joke I heard recently:

An atheist was walking in the woods one day marveling at the wonders of evolution. Suddenly, a bear appeared and ran at him.

The man turned to run, but the bear leapt upon him and lifted its paw to strike.

“Oh god! Help!” screamed the atheist.

Time stopped. The bear’s paw froze in midair.

God’s voice asked, “What is it you’d like me to do for you?”

“I must be dreaming,” said the astonished atheist.

“No, this is real,” God said. “I’m God. I’m here to help.”

“I’m sorry,” replied the atheist, “but I’m never going to believe in you. But if you really are God, could you turn this bear into a Christian?”

“That’s all?”

“That’s all.”

Time returned to normal.

The bear slowly lowered its paw and said:

“Father, thank you for this meal that I am about to receive. Amen”

• Pissed Off Payoff & Dirty Money Laundering

Is it better to be pissed off than to be pissed on? Ask this Oregon man who paid a $206 traffic ticket by sending a plastic bag filled with coins and urine to the courts.

Speaking of dirty money, the Associated Press reports that another Oregon man, described as “foul smelling” was arrested for money laundering.

It seems this guy who smells like cow manure goes into a bank. A teller throws up and customers complain.

The cops show up and investigate.

Winds up this stinker is involved with high-quality marijuana and hallucinogenic mushroom distribution

Next thing you know, the IRS gets involved and Smello the clown gets busted for money laundering to the tune of a half a million bucks!

Oh, the drug charges were dropped.

• A Pregnant Woman, Two Bears & an Atheist

I’m going up to White Plains with some friends in a week and we were trying to decide where to eat. After doing a local search for Westchester County restaurants, I came across this video for The Melting Pot in W.P.  Looks inviting. Has anyone been there? Any comments on the dining experience? IS THE FOOD ANY GOOD?

Speaking of restaurants, the New York Times did a recent write up on a Persian restaurant called  Shiraz in Elmsford. Nice little town, but not exactly the place I’d expect to find a fine dining establishment – particulary Middle Eastern. I have a feeling it’ll be a nice little treat; the Times gave it a Very Good rating – whatever that means.

Here’s a clunker of a film that definitely deserves the current honor of being the 4th worst movie ever made.

Holy Catfish!

Made in 1975, Blood Waters of Dr. Z, aka ZAAT,  tells the weird tale of Kurt Leopold, a disgruntled former Nazi scientist who’s spent the last 20 years devising a plot to avenge himself against everyone who has ever mocked his work. Dr Z’s final solution? He turns himself into a giant walking catfish of all things.

Once his bizarre transformation is complete, our friendly neighborhood amphibi-man sets his scaly plan in motion: killing his detractors, terrorizing townsfolk, kidnapping pretty girls, and creating a legion of finned followers – pretty standard for a mutant Nazi catfish.

Trivia

With the exception of one actor, no one associated with Blood Waters of Dr. Z ever made a movie again – not even the director.

Why Is This Fishy Film Here?

The only saving grace of Blood Waters of Dr. Z is that it was featured in a 1999 episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000, an American cult television comedy series that ran on the Comedy Channel (Comedy Central) from 1988 to 1999.
