Doeloe Lounge Chair and Pretzel Bench – Abie Abdillah

Indonesian designer abie abdillah has just presented his latest works, the ‘doeloe lounge chair’ and ‘pretzel bench’. For both furniture pieces, the young craftsman utilized rattan, a highly sustainable material with over 600 different species in existence.

Living in a city that’s already crowded and hectic, makes me often suprised seeing new buildings, apartments, and malls were still built rapidly these days in Jakarta. This condition makes me wonder how it felt to live in Jakarta in the 1970′s, when there are still many green places spread along the city.

From an eager to live on a time that I never felt, I want to create a furniture that took a piece of shape that could resemble that time. And this is why “doeloe lounge chair” was created.

Doeloe (read: dulu) means a time that has passed. Inspired by a design of “Oplet” (modified from Morris or Austin van designs), public transportation vehicles that used in Jakarta on 1930′s to 1979. Using rattan materials, which are consider as a classic material, “doeloe” was mean’t to represent my feelings to live on a time that I wish I could had.

Cancun Underwater Museum

If scuba diving in the World’s deepest swimming pool did not inspire you, maybe entertaining yourself and appreciating art while diving in Cancun’s Carribean Sea will!

Cancun authorities decided to build there World’s largest underwater museum at the National Park West Coast of Isla Mujeres. All the sculptures have been created with PH neutral concrete that will allow algae and small invertebrates to flourish, boosting the local ecosystem changing the appearance of the sculptures over time as the coral reefs and marine life grow.

How many times did you find yourself hunting for the right box to ups or mail a gift? How many times you ended up buying a new one, finding out it was too big, and freaking out searching for old papers to fill it up and hold the gift in place? Upack seems to be the perfect idea to solve all this troubles.

The idea by Japanese Patrick Sung is very simple but functional. Playing with thousands possible folding lines he turned a cardboard sheet into something resembling aluminum foil (the one used for food!). According to the same principle his Upack (Universal Pack) embraces and protects objects of every kind of shape properly!

Drawing inspiration from World War II bomber planes, this chair’s aerodynamic curves are hugged in riveted aluminum sheets, while the seat and back are swathed in ribbed whiskey leather with the busted-down softness of a vintage bomber jacket. We love the extreme contrast of the materials and the fascinating design that makes it extremely unique yet very versatile.

Ben van Berkel with Arjan Dingsté, Marianthi Tatari and Collette Parras of UNStudio are the minds behind the project of this amazing working/living space located in Greenwich Village in Manhattan. A jaw dropping loft. Certainly the most articulated yet harmonious combination of working and living space we have ever seen.

Cardboard seems to be more and more an inspiring medium in the contemporary art world. After covering Anastassia Elias’ and her World inside toilet papers rolls and the amazing sculptures of Chris Gilmour, we felt like we shouldn’t have left this go unnoticed.

American artist Kiel Johnson made this wonderful collection of cardboard cameras that includes SLRs, Polaroids, point and shoot, twin lens cameras and the retro 8mm!
