Beauty School And Becoming A Better Individual

I have an niece who is very keen on presenting herself in the best possible light, she understands the power of beauty and the power of a smile. She is at the moment studying at beauty school (and for those of you who think that is a bit of a no brainer course, be surprised)! Beauty school is not just about how to apply make-up or do your nails. There is work involved, work that is personally fulfilling to the individual.

My niece often expounds the value of looking good and feeling beautiful. It is to her a philosophy - or a way of life. She often tells me it is not so much about being naturally stunning it is about using your natural attributes to not only look good but feel good. At beauty school she is not just learning about the usual things that you may think about such as 'What colour tones to use when applying make-up', but also many of the basic or fundamental ideas that help you lead a better life.

She is encouraged to explore her own individuality while appreciating and respecting others own individuality and since she has started beauty school her self esteem has risen. She smiles much more now and the smile is genuinely happy. As an educational program I would say it is a winner for not only is she being taught practical skills that will serve her well but she is also being taught the core values of how to be a kind and decent human being...and her smile..It's powerful.

The Problem With People

The problem with people is that everybody thinks they are always so, so friggin' right - on any combination of ideas, ideals or facts. Even when facts don't always add up they have to twist them so that square pegs will fit into round holes because everyone is always so right.

                                         In fact sometimes bloody messily.

The Twelfth has for the last few years been called 'Orangefest' and this year for the first time there was Sunday opening in Belfast to entice the tourists to come along to enjoy the day. Here however the more things change the more they stay the same

This morning at my local coffee shop a Spaniard who did not speak very good English managed to make his thoughts clear to me. He said "People here have no respect, no love, drink too much and there is not enough sun".

I suppose all the pomp and splendor of the day is nothing if that is how we are perceived around the world. I think we need to do more than just change the name. A change in attitudes will probably take generations but maybe someday we can learn to live and respect one another's traditions - no matter how archaic they are.

Sometimes life is such that you feel like crying...for some people there is an understandable reason, life is a bitch, it is random and callous; fairness and justice are, after all, just human concepts so to believe that life should be kinder is a bit of misconception. Life just is. That old saying is true about 'shit happens' and it is also true that we all fall in shit and some of us (a few) come up smelling of roses. I cannot say that I am one of those few.

On Sunday I took a break from the callous turn of events that I have felt my own life taking over the past couple of years. I did a sponsored walk for the Alzheimer's Society. Walking from Seapark recreational Park to Bangor Marina along the coastal route. It is a beautiful nine mile walk and one that anyone who feels moderately healthy could do easily enough. All you need is to give your time.

To an extent I felt myself 'badgered' into it by family, because I did not feel I had the time. Sometimes your sense of responsibility leaves you feeling torn between things you would like to do and things you feel you must do and Sunday was one of those days. I am glad I did it though made me feel good to think I may be helping others.

I agreed by the Friday evening to do the walk and I reluctantly sent a text out to about ten or eleven people (that is another thing about doing sponsored anythings - I find it hard to ask people for money, although not asking kinda defeats the purpose).

The response, almost immediate proved to me that although life can be shit I am truly blessed. For at such short notice not one of my friends...Not even the odd one or two who can really only be perceived as acquaintances now since I hear from them so rarely let me down. Everyone of them pledged something and some even offered advice (jokingly) "Don't forget"

I had estimated that I would raise around £50.00 or maybe a little more and I thought considering that I didn't go around asking lots of people and it was short notice that would not be too bad. As far as I was concerned every little helps (right)? So far those few people have raised £72.00 and it is not quite over yet.

The event and my friends response has left me in mawkish mood and a little tearful. There is nothing like a demonstration of sheer good nature and human kindness to remind you no matter how difficult life is we have all things to be grateful for.

I have the best friends in the world and I want to thank you all for supporting me. You are all Simply the best!

Bike Fest..Injury Claims...No Stress

I hadn’t been on a motorbike for a long time so a few years ago when a friend invited me to a bike fest (apparently not just any bike fest…But one of the biggest ones in the country…so I have been told)! I jumped at the chance, well wouldn’t you?

Off we set on a bright summer morning on a Kawasaki Z1000 all red and silver, a monstrous hooligan of a bike …Perched on the back I felt pretty cool imagining I looked the part as a bike chick (albeit a bit of an aged one). I felt super as we flew down the motor way.

I don’t know what happened, I can’t remember that much about it but I imagine that it all looked pretty dramatic. There was an accident and yes we were in the middle of it, so we didn’t make the bike fest. The upside was that we were lucky to be alive.

My friend looked after the injury claims, being a biker for years he knew lots about Motorbike Injury compensation and knew the company that he trusted were this sort of thing. All I had to worry about was getting me well again. I had none of the stress associated with accidents.

He used Claimant Law, he had used them before so felt that they were a reliable firm. Not that my friend has many accidents but he does know what is involved in motorbike injury claims because if I am a slightly aged bike chick he is a slightly (very slightly) aged biker. So he has a bit of experience as well as a beer gut under his belt.

Whoop dee doo! At last those men in Westminster have made up their minds! There is finally a Government I'll love to hate. I can stop being distracted by the latest updates and get down to the important things in life- web browsing and shopping. One of my favourite sites is ShopWiki.

In ShopWiki (UK) I was distracted by the pets section, looking at things from dog carriers, to toys. A bicycle carrier caught my eye..cute. Another cute thing was the front pack carrier and the back pack carriers - I preferred the front pack carriers myself. I used a similar thing when my daughter was a baby, that was an age ago.

I was actually there to look at household items and check out the prices of a few things, which I did get around to doing, eventually! After all the election being sorted out I am no longer being distracted. I am getting back to what is important.

My friend in Amsterdam also loves browsing ShopWiki She was checking out the prices of bicycles and bicycle accessories. I checked out the Netherlands site (being fond of my own bike, I thought I may find a few things I may like). ShopWiki offers a choice and range and gives you the chance to compare prices - it can become pretty compulsive browsing.

Politics And Politicians all Very Distasteful

I am finding it very hard to get away from all the Westminster drama, every time I turn on the t.v there is a political commentator spouting out his latest view or telling of the latest developments. Like a lot of people I am concerned that the Tories won the majority of seats but watching the shenanigans of Nick Clegg has made me even more concerned.

No-one is certain if he is trying to make the best deal for his party or for his Country. As usual, politicians all look very distasteful. I think one of the reasons there was not a clear winner is because the dishonesty and double dealings of politicians has become too apparent. People are disillusioned with all the parties.

One thing that strikes me is that although the Tories came in first they did not receive a mandate from the UK as a whole - so I'm not certain that they do have a moral right to run the Country. Another thing that strikes me is that a PR system if it is brought in will mean smaller parties will be in a position to hold the more popular parties to ransom - is that a good thing?

On the 9th August 2008 I was standing on the deck of a boat, well to be more specific- a yacht. I was doing a days introductory sailing trip; no experience necessary, we sailed up and down the Belfast Lough from Carrickfergus down towards Donaghadee and up to Whitehead then back around.

The day had started out wet, breezy, miserable and cool and I suspected that things were going to degenerate, that the trip would be canceled and the day would be a bit of a wash-out. Power for the course for my ideas.

As it turned out the day picked up and it turned out not so bad after all for myself and my two companions. Even though the skipper decided it was probably best not to venture too far. We returned from the day with the healthy glow of the sun on our face enthusing about other things that we would like to do.

I wanted to join up for the Jubilee Sailing Trust a holiday for able bodied and disabled people aboard a tall ship. Imagine a holiday to foreign places from the perspective of the sea. Not a cruise mind you - a holiday where you fully participate in the sailing; and if you had to climb up to the crows nest you' really feel the wind in your hair. Sounded good to me - still sounds good.

On the yacht my companions myself and the other people who signed up for the day were the 'crew' under the skipper's excellent and confident guidance. He tried to teach us different things that are important to know if you are sailing. All of which I have forgotten! As I recall I quickly found my niche - staying out of the way and I don't think anyone minded that one bit. I did what I usually do when I feel like a bit of an extra limb... stayed out of the way and day dreamed.

Dusty Bluebells and an Ash Coated Dome

While walking in the countryside today the silence was broken by the sound of a plane overhead. How things have changed in the world since last weekend. I looked down at my feet and saw a sprinkling of blue headed flowers and my mind went back to a street game I used to play as a child. It was one of those circle games where we sang the following song and one kid weaved in and out of the circle and at the end tapped on someone's shoulder and then it would start all over again until a snake of kids was weaving in and out of the ever decreasing circle: It is a very old game and dates back to the 19th century ...It's doubtful if anyone plays it now kids don't seem to go out the way we did.

My mind returned to the present and the plane over my head, a plane that must have flown through the dust and ash from Eyjafjallajokull.

Returning to the city I noticed the glass dome of the Victoria Centre as it caught the bright spring sunshine. To my surprise I observed two men walking on the top with what looked like brooms in their hands. Never one to miss a photographic opportunity I decided to park and take a snap or two. Apparently they were washing the ash and dust away that had fallen over the last week or so. I imagine it’s everywhere it our countryside, in our cities and in our lungs.

Well, according to the BBC News the dust started off as being really fine and an immediate danger to airplanes. As the week has progressed the hysteria has started to die down and reports have went from 'people should wear masks to protect their lungs to 'it is invisible and harmless' in certain parts of Scotland it is not invisible but very much in evidence that's according to one BBC News report that I watched. Whether it is harmless or not I couldn't really say but I must say I am glad I am not planning on flying anytime soon.

The imagery of the street song The Dusty Bluebell to my mind was always of a friendly choo choo train and also of fields all higgledy-piggledy with those popular flowers bluebells.

And I imagine our spring flowers all covered with an invisible dust because just because you cannot see something doesn't mean it is not there.

The Volcano The Planes And The Politicians

I can''t think off the top of my head - or on my feet! I mean I am not 'quick off the mark'. Lately my brain has been seeping out of my ears. Not literally - that would be messy. April has been a glorious month weather wise and it's not as though the news has been dull; between volcanoes, earthquakes, grounded planes and the UK general election there has been plenty to fascinate and to inspire. Lately though, my brain feels as grounded as the planes 'parked' in airports all over Ireland the UK and Europe.
All this fascinating stuff has just encouraged me to go off on one of my reveries. Imagine if Mother Nature dealt a death blow to flying. Imagine a world where we had to start traveling the old fashioned way. For a start it would be quieter for anyone living close to an airport, traveling to places like Europe or the U.S.A. would be a much more gentile affair and probably once more limited to the few who could really afford it. Regardless of the fact that you can have conference calls on the internet, this human world would have to slow down. Perhaps it is the unusual quietness of the skies and the unusually great weather (for this time of year) but it is all starting to sound rather idyllic. I have started imagining train travel once more becoming a major form of travel and even canal boats meandering up our canals! Talk about a daydream - Traveling for the sake of the journey rather than the destination may very well become fashionable. I for one find airports extremely stressful places at the best of times. If I had been caught up in this latest crisis I'd be one of those people you'd see on your tv in bits. (I always run out of money when I am away anywhere). Off course the drawbacks of losing flight are immense...people who need urgent medical attention in centers far from their home would be in a devastating and perilous position and when countries that have natural disasters need aid fast they'd be totally fecked. So it is just a bit of a daydream to pass the time to allay the boredom.

Sussing Out The Internet Links - Banners and Buttons!

OMG! I have done it - at last A little success..........For so long now I have been trying to work out how to put a banner on the side linking to another blog if you don't have a code.(I didn't want to ask anyone I wanted to work it out for myself-for once). A few weeks ago I bought three books about computers, one was called '10 Minute Guide To HTML' .Needless to say ten minutes have come and gone and I am still no wiser about some of the mysteries of blogging and using the internet.

Today I was just futtering about as I have a tendency to do, grumbling to myself that I should be 'writing and being creative de bla de bla de bla' INSTEAD OF TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO PLACE LINKS WITH PHOTOS ON MY SIDE BAR!

It's so obvious - when you go into your layout and click on add gadget there is a 'picture' gadget and upload your banner...add a link and hey presto!

Only took me over a year to figure that one out...If I had brains I'd be dangerous!

Nettle Stew And Family Yarns

My Great aunt used to go up the fields and pick the nettles; she put them in her soups and stews and swore by their medicinal attributes. They were good for your blood and your joints. She picked the nettles in the springtime when they were young. Sometimes we went along to help her, not that she ever needed much help. We really just larked around, one year I fell into a nettle patch and stung my bum. Aunt just picked extra docket leaves and told me to stop my gurning’ threatening that ‘if I didn’t stop gurning my face would stick like that and that’ll teach me to be a wee bit more careful in future’. She probably sounds harsh but she wasn’t, not really. Aunt Sarah was born in the late 1880’s. When I was a kid she already seemed ancient, she must have been at least one hundred when she died for she died in the late 1980’s when my daughter was about three.
For the last few years of her life she had stopped going out for her walks to collect nettles and over to the chapel and her weekly trips to the bingo she had become practicably housebound because she was going blind. The day she died was still a sad day. She was my mum’s last link to a past that was long gone the last of her fathers family so it wasn’t just the sadness of losing a loved one but the sense that an era in our family’s history was over.

I come from a family of tall tale tellers. I remember when I was very young there was a photo of John F Kennedy and Cardinal Newman in our living room. I asked my mum who the young handsome man was. “He’s the president …and your cousin’s cousin love” I believed for years that the President of the United States of America was one of my distant American cousins. As a matter of fact members of our family turned up at so many historic and famous events as far as I knew, and the Mc Alisters , O’Hara’s and Mc Caffrey’s where all over the world. When my dad told me about stories of the second world war and what had happened he told me them through the eyes of ‘uncle Shamus’ who’s life was never the same after guarding the terrible war criminals at Nuremburg. I think he fought the second world war practicably single handed because he was at so many battles! We also had a relative at the battle of Islandlwana between the Zula’s and the British in 1878 (on the Zula side). Our family build bridges and railways and give advice to the rich and famous. I believed it all for so long even though I never actually met ‘uncles Shamus’ or cousins’ Pat and Terrence and then there was great great aunt Peggy Daniels who was famous for her poteen in Ireland and helped Jim Beam invent his famous bourbon when she emigrated to America. I believed it all, I believed my family helped to save the world, build the world and quench its thirst. Obviously I grew up with a notion that we were pretty special.
At the wake there were five generations of our family in the small parlour mostly women, the men were either in the yard smoking and talking or some of them had snuck of to the pub for a pint. This was a dry wake. Tea and sandwiches and cakes Sarah had been teetotal all her life. My family was typical half of them were altar eating Catholics the other half were drinking, fighting scallywags.
Mary, Sarah’s eldest daughter who was in her seventies and a formidable woman was having a bit of an argument with my mum about Sarah’s recipes. “It wasn’t turnip it was parsnip” she was saying loudly her voice was shrill. This was a woman who was sure of her facts. My daughter was tucked up beside me with Sooty the cat on her lap, three years of age and all ears. Her wee head high and imperious, last week I had brought her up to Donegal town and give her a tour of the O’Donnell’s castle. I had told her she was a Donegal princess on her father’s side because her great grandmother was one of the O’Donnell’s from Donegal. She off course believed it and so identified totally with her favourite Disney heroine of the moment Snow White. She was a nosy child and was sitting listening to the two old women intently.
“Mary your bums a plum” My mum said “It was turnip! Your mammy’s stew was nettles, turnip, an onion and a leek with a bit of shin if there was any.”
“Not anytime I got it it wasn’t” Mary argued back. Both women agreed Sarah used a lot of nettles and dandelions. “Do you remember that terrible dandelion tea that she made us drink when we were sick?” said Sadie who was trying to get them away from the turnip/parsnip debacle.
“Uggh” they both said together. Then everyone agreed although it was awful it did seem to help what ever she put in it. My mum adding “Well if it wasn’t going to kill us maybe it was going to cure us.” Then they started to reminisce about where she got her nettles and remembered going nettle picking with her. Down the glen was the most memorable place for all of them because it was so spooky and scary and there was that old fairy thorn that always looked eerie. My daughters face was growing quizzical and concerned, she looked at Sooty the cat and a thought most have crossed her mind. She threw him down of her knee.
She looked up at me and whispered. “Was Auntie Sarah a witch”? Her wee face looked frightened. I started to laugh. When I was a kid walloping about the fields with Auntie Sarah trying to pick out the nicest looking nettles and seeing who liked butter with the buttercups it never occurred to me that this might be a bit ‘odd’. It seemed a perfectly normal thing to do. The fact that neither my mum nor any of my other aunts picked nettles (and dandelions) didn’t occur to me. This was just something that we did with great aunt in the springtime. Becca hadn’t ever had that experience, Aunt Sarah was too old by the time she had started to toddle.
The older women started to laugh to; I think they were tempted to spin a yarn about her being a refugee from the Salem witch trials. Mary said “Becca we are talking about your aunties famine recipes. Her mammy and daddy were alive when there was a terrible famine in Ireland and everyone was hungry because there was no food.
It had never occurred to me that a member of my family would have such a close insight into something that happened so long ago (1845-52)Mary was telling Becca that Sarah’s mammy had told her about being so hungry that she had eaten grass and that they made a soup with nettles and onions if they could find one. Whether Sarah had known hunger that bad I don’t know, but the stories must have stayed with her because she still gathered nettles and dandelions and added them to soups and stews to make them go further. That day, history came off the page for me, I understood my Aunt Mary’s bitterness towards the British and her willingness to blame just about everything on them. (even bad weather). She must have been raised on the stories of her Grandmother and grandfather. The real stories not the silly ones my family told me. Sarah’s mother’s family was practicably wiped out by the famine and they lost what little they had that any of them survived was probably a miracle but in all disasters there are always survivors and people do carry on.
That day five generations of my family sat in a little parlour to say their final farewell to its oldest member and I thought five strong healthy generations. My generation, never give much of a thought to the fact that we are here at all but that day I couldn’t help thinking I am here because a little girl and boy survived on grass and nettles, for Sarah’s mammy and daddy must have been very young and born maybe right in the middle of the famine so that they lived at all is miraculous.

What's More Likely A Daff Tree Or an Honest Politician?

This is the view from the Cavehill: It provides stunning views down over Belfast on a clear day — and even on a not so clear day. From the Cavehill you can see up towards Carrickfergus and over towards the Isle of Man … You can see a lot from the Cavehill and the views can be stunning! Almost as stunning as a politician’s promise. Actually I should not say that because Cavehill has a timelessness and unchanging quality about it. I know, nature is ever changing but Cavehill has substance it can deliver a stunning view which is more than can be said for our politicians. What, if anything have they delivered other than disappointment?

Below is the view from the vantage point of the sheep’s path (or pad) looking over towards the caves. The sheep’s path is known to be at times at bit dangerous and can be as slippery as a politician looking for re-election. I suppose I shouldn’t have said that either! Looks like I am hell bent on insulting the Cavehill today. Although I must insist … I am very fond of the Cavehill, there’s nothing quite like sitting at the top of the Cavehill eating a hard boiled egg and feeling as though the wind is going to blow your head off.
